Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation Welcomes New Ambassadors from the Association of Junior Leagues International
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In celebration of Women’s Equality Day during the milestone 250th anniversary year for the United States, the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation today announced new Ambassadors from its official partner, the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI).
AJLI’s connection to the historic women’s suffrage movement spans back over a century, tracing directly to local chapters like the Junior League of St. Louis, which grew out of the Junior Equal Suffrage League to actively champion the 19th Amendment. Today, AJLI’s newly named Ambassadors join the Foundation to ensure our foremothers take their rightful place in the nation’s capital.
Three AJLI leaders have been appointed to the Foundation’s Council of Ambassadors:
• Melanie Schild — Chief Executive Officer, AJLI
• Diane Flanagan — Board President, AJLI
• Alice Glenn — Immediate Past Board President, AJLI
“American suffragists championed women’s full participation in our democracy, and scores of Junior League members organized, advocated, and marched in pursuit of the passage of the 19th Amendment.” said Anna Laymon, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation. “Bringing Melanie Schild, Diane Flanagan, and Alice Glenn onto our Council of Ambassadors bridges a century of women’s leadership with our mission to weave the story of the suffragists into the landscape of the National Mall.”

Commemorating the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment, Women’s Equality Day pays tribute to the generations of suffragists who organized, marched, and persevered to expand democracy.

Indianapolis, IN – May 14, 2026 – The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) proudly recognized Jennifer Ludwick of the Junior League of Birmingham, AL as the recipient of the 2026 Rising Star Award during the Annual Conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Rising Star Award honors new Active members whose early Junior League involvement exemplifies extraordinary promise and leadership in service to their communities.
Since joining the Junior League of Birmingham, AL in 2024, Jennifer has quickly emerged as a passionate advocate for vulnerable populations. As Chair of the AntiHuman Trafficking Committee, she has strengthened partnerships with organizations such as the Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force, expanded survivor-centered programming, and launched educational initiatives that connect League Members and community leaders with experts in prevention, advocacy, and support services.
A Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and human rights advocate with dual Master’s degrees in Public Administration and Public Health, Jennifer is committed to addressing both immediate community needs and long-term systemic challenges. Her research and policy work on juvenile justice reform reflects her dedication to creating meaningful, lasting change.
What truly distinguishes Jennifer is her belief that effective civic leadership begins with listening, building trust, and leading with compassion and accountability. In her short time with the Junior League of Birmingham, she has already created a lasting impact and established a strong foundation for future success.

Indianapolis, IN – May 14, 2026 – The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) proudly recognized Sue Mecklenburg of the Junior League of Seattle as the recipient of the 2026 Mary Harriman Community Leadership Award during the Annual Conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Established in 1990, the Mary Harriman Community Leadership Award honors Junior League Members whose leadership, service, and commitment to community impact embody the legacy of Junior League founder Mary Harriman. The award recognizes individuals who have created meaningful and lasting change through civic leadership, volunteerism, and advocacy.
A member of the Junior League of Seattle since 1979, Sue Mecklenburg has dedicated her life and career to improving communities through innovation, collaboration, and purpose-driven leadership. As Starbucks’ first Director of Environmental Affairs, she pioneered the company’s Social Impact and Sustainability efforts and helped establish The Starbucks Foundation. Most notably, she led the development of Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices, a groundbreaking model that transformed coffee sourcing worldwide and improved opportunities for millions of farmers and their families.
Sue’s impact extends far beyond the corporate sector. Throughout her career, she has championed initiatives that strengthen support for children and families, advance healthcare advocacy for youth, and foster community-driven solutions to complex social challenges. In 2026, The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) proudly celebrates the 125th Anniversary of the Junior League Movement, marking more than a century of women coming together to lead, serve, and create meaningful change in communities around the world.
Founded in 1901 by visionary philanthropist Mary Harriman in New York City, The Junior League began as a bold idea to mobilize women as trained volunteers addressing critical community needs. At a time when opportunities for women’s leadership were limited, Harriman believed women could be powerful agents of social change when equipped with education, structure, and collective purpose. Her vision sparked a Movement that has grown into a global network of nearly 300 Junior Leagues and more than 110,000 women dedicated to advancing women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training.

New initiative calls attention to women’s mental overload and sparks a conversation for change
The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) announces the launch of Every Woman. All Things., a groundbreaking initiative to raise awareness about the mental overload women face and to start a much-needed global conversation about its
causes and impact. The launch coincides with World Mental Health Day, underscoring the urgency of addressing women’s well-being in today’s world.
For generations, women have carried an invisible weight: managing households, caring for families, excelling in careers, and meeting the constant expectation to “do it all.” The result is often burnout, role conflict, and exhaustion. Every Woman. All Things. is not about providing quick fixes—it is about naming the problem, creating space for dialogue, and challenging the systems and expectations that fuel mental overload.
“This is the first step toward change,” said Melanie Schild. “We know the pressures women face every day are real, and we believe that by starting the conversation, we can begin to reimagine a future where women’s lives are more balanced, sustainable, and supported.”
The initiative will focus on sparking dialogue around key drivers of mental overload, including:
• Caregiving Systems: Strengthening support for both formal and informal caregivers
across all stages of life.
• Financial Insecurity: Addressing the labor gap and driving meaningful change in
workplaces.
• Shared Responsibilities & Mental Load: Redefining care by acknowledging the imbalance
and promoting shared accountability.
• Women and Aging: Championing dignity, value, and mental well-being throughout every
stage of a woman’s life.
As part of the launch, AJLI is calling on communities and individuals to amplify the message on social media using #EveryWomanAllThings. By sharing stories, reflections, and supportive messages, participants can help build momentum and raise awareness of the invisible load women carry.
“Change starts with conversation,” said Melanie Shield, CEO. “When we talk openly about what contributes to women’s mental overload, we begin to dismantle the barriers that hold women back from thriving. Together, we can create a culture that values balance, well-being, and shared responsibility.”

NEW YORK, New York – September 1, 2025
The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), a global women’s organization dedicated to advancing women’s leadership for meaningful community impact, is proud to celebrate “International Find the Good Day” on September 18, 2025. This special day of unity and compassion inspires individuals and communities around the world to spread kindness, uplift others, and create positive change.
“Find the Good Day” is an opportunity for individuals, families, and organizations to come together as changemakers and create a ripple effect of positivity across communities. It is a day to reflect on the goodness within ourselves and find inspiration in the acts of kindness we’ve witnessed and participated in throughout the year.
AJLI invites its network of more than 110,000 women across nearly 300 communities, as well as supporters around the globe, to join in this celebration. Whether through volunteer service, community initiatives, or simple acts of kindness, every contribution has the power to make a lasting impact.
“As we approach ‘Find the Good Day,’ we are reminded of the extraordinary impact we can have when we come together with purpose, hope, and optimism,” said Melanie Schild, Chief Executive Officer of The Association of Junior Leagues International. “Through collective action and a shared commitment to service, we can create stronger, more connected communities – one act of goodness at a time.”

The Junior League Launches "Jump In & Join" Campaign for National Volunteer Month
NEW YORK, New York – March 31, 2025
A Nationwide Effort to Build Connections, Foster Purpose and Empower Individuals to Drive Meaningful Change
The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), launches the “Jump In & Join” campaign, a movement designed to cultivate a sense of belonging and elevate the power of volunteerism and service. Coinciding with National Volunteer Month in April, Junior Leagues throughout the country encourage people to join volunteer and service groups, for the betterment of our county and ourselves.
As US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy wrote in his January 2025 My Parting Prescription for America, “community is a powerful source of life satisfaction and life expectancy, where we know each other and find purpose in contributing to other’s lives.”
“The decline of civic institutions has made knowing where to go for community harder,” wrote Dr. Murthy. “At a time when so many people feel like they don’t matter, service also reminds us we have value we bring to the world.”
The Junior League calls on people to consider joining service-based organizations to help fill that gap, to bring a sense of fulfilment in addition to improving the communities around them.
“Through Jump In & Join, we invite individuals to witness firsthand the transformative effect that volunteering has on both personal and professional growth,” said Melanie Schild, CEO of AJLI. “Research, including a recent study from the Mayo Clinic, shows that volunteering can elevate your overall well-being by improving mental and physical health.”
The “Jump In & Join” campaign harnesses the power of collective service to strengthen social bonds, enhance well-being and inspire civic engagement. Junior League invites other service membership organizations to participate in Jump In & Join, for the greater good.
“Volunteering is more than giving back to the community. It’s an investment in yourself and the community. Together, we can strengthen communities while finding new ways to turn passion into action and make an impact,” Schild adds.

]]>The purpose of the AJLI Award for Community Impact (formerly known as Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Community Impact Award) is to recognize League projects that concretely illustrate the Junior League tradition of achieving significant community impact through collaboration. Successful community impact is rooted in a League’s ability to respond creatively to needs in a community that are unmet or underserved through the inspired efforts of Junior League members as powerful leaders for community change. The program must achieve long-lasting measurable results that are significantly the result of the skilled work of trained volunteers working in partnership with community agencies.
