Frankincense has been used in medicinal and sacred rituals for over 5,000 years:
It is mentioned 15 times in the Old Testament, and two times in the New Testament. Most famously, frankincense was offered by the wise men from the East as a gift to baby Jesus.
The Egyptians used frankincense for ceremonial purposes, wound care, and mummification, viewing it as a sacred part of the embalming process.
Prominent ancient writers, Herodotus (of the Persian Empire) and Pliny the Elder (of the early Roman Empire), documented the medicinal applications of frankincense in their works. More specifically, it was used as an antidote to hemlock poisoning.
In Eastern medicine, it is used for arthritis, inflammation, and bronchial support. It was considered sacred in the ancient world and is still revered today.
In Ayurvedic medicine, Frankincense is highly valued as a rasayana (rejuvenative) substance. Historically, it has been used for the treatment of coughs and asthma, as well as the management of inflammation and pain.
Frankincense contains the phytochemical (natural compound) boswellic acid, which targets enzymes that trigger inflammation, such as 5-Loxin.
One study from 2019 detailed the outcomes of multiple human clinical trials in which boswellic acid had been implicated in various phases. They found boswellic acid may have an important role to play in the treatment of chronic diseases.1,2
There are five species of Boswellia trees, most of which are found in Somalia, Oman, Ethiopia, and Sudan. One species in particular, the Boswellia serrata, comes from the dry soils of India.
Acetyl-11-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) is found in the resin of Boswellia serrata trees. AKBA can block the enzymes that trigger joint inflammation, inhibiting leukotriene biosynthesis (the body’s way of setting off alarm bells when detecting allergens and irritants) and reducing pain.4
When using frankincense for supplementation purposes, companies will often implement one of these common forms into their formulas:
Powdered boswellia: This form does not dissolve well in water and is broken down quickly in the body. Because of these factors, the AKBA in powdered boswellia never reaches the blood stream, and, therefore, offers very low bioavailability.
Standardized boswellia extracts: These concentrated forms ensure consistent doses. Despite the high dosages, AKBA concentrations vary with regular extracts, as each milligram of AKBA is poorly absorbed.
The patented extract, AprèsFlex®: This highly bioavailable extract delivers a consistent high dose of AKBA (20%) and is absorbed significantly better than standard boswellia extracts. Quercetin, a powerful bioflavonoid frequently found in equine and canine supplements, is often used to target respiration, allergies, and recovery. It can be helpful in managing airway inflammation, reducing allergic reactions, and improving post-exercise recuperation.
Over the years, customers have told me they have tried giving quercetin to their horse or dog but failed to see the results they hoped for. There is often a very good reason for this: low bioavailability.
Bioavailability is the measurement of how much product is absorbed by the body and reaches the systemic circulation. There can be no efficacy without bioavailability.
Quercetin is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water and doesn’t dissolve in or mix with it. It is also sensitive to stomach acids, breaking down rapidly. The kidneys are notorious for excreting quercetin.
Because of this factor, the quercetin powder (listed on a label as just “quercetin”) that many other supplement companies use is actually the least bioavailable out of all of its forms. One study showed an estimated 3%-17% absorption rate of quercetin, the low numbers being a marker of low bioavailability.1

Bioavailability can be improved when ingesting quercetin in its whole food form from:
These foods are high in quercetin and are complexed with sugar molecules; therefore, the quercetin water solubility is increased, absorption is remarkably improved, and the bioavailability is much higher than the standard powder versions.
Unfortunately, if a horse or large dog were to get an adequate amount of quercetin via whole foods, they would have to eat a LOT of apples or kale or berries or spinach.
Luckily, other forms of quercetin with higher bioavailability do exist!
Quercetin phytosome: This quercetin is bound to phospholipids (such as sunflower lecithin), allowing quercetin to withstand digestive degradation and cross cell membranes more efficiently. This means the maximum amount of quercetin absorption into the blood stream is possible, and, therefore, the bioavailability is very high.2
In fact, quercetin phytosome has been shown to achieve a 20 times greater bioavailability over quercetin powder.3
Because, dosage becomes critical when aiming for achieved health benefits from quercetin. The lower the bioavailability of quercetin, the higher the dose needs to be. In other words, multiple grams of quercetin powder in equine supplements are required in order to achieve maximum efficacy.
If you are unsure about how much quercetin you should be giving your horse or dog, check the label; it will state the number of grams of quercetin powder the supplement contains.

]]>It is essential for producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of cells.
Chemical structure of CoQ10
In human nutrition, supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been used for decades, targeting:

If the mitochondria fail to produce sufficient ATP for cells to properly function, muscles, organs, brain, nerves, the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and metabolism functions are greatly affected.
This lack of the necessary CoQ10 and ATP is called mitochondrial dysfunction.
Mitochondrial dysfunction particularly affects the GI tract (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease) and triggers significant changes in the gut microbiome. The gut is the seat of health, with variances in the gut microbiota colonies affecting neurotransmitters, the immune system, and overall wellbeing.
Like the gut-brain axis, the bidirectional communication between brain and gut, the gut microbiota and the cellular mitochondria communicate with each other. Some researchers have labeled this “cross talk.”
Mitochondrial dysfunction not only affects bidirectional communication; it also affects the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are crucial for fiber fermentation in the equine hindgut.
Additionally, mitochondrial dysfunction can drive microbiota dysbiosis, impacting digestion and the immune system. The negative effects of this include an increase in gut inflammation, intestinal barrier permeability (leaky gut), and conditions that enable pathogenic bacteria to thrive.1
Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) causes damage to nerve cells leading to what researchers call “starved cells.” How does this happen?
EPM causes inflammation and oxidative stress.
This inflammation and oxidative stress disrupts cellular energy production (via mitochondria).
The lack of cellular energy production leads to fatigue and neurological symptoms.
Lyme disease, on the other hand, can cause damage to mitochondrial membranes. The chronic inflammation caused by Lyme disease can impair cellular energy production.
After a horse ingests the EPM-causing parasite, Sarcocystis neurona, the protozoa cause inflammation and breach the intestinal wall. This infection can then trigger inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in neurological symptoms.
The gut is affected due to the subsequent mitochondrial dysfunction reducing SCFA production in the hind gut and enabling pathogenic bacteria to thrive.

In Lyme disease, the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi can disrupt the GI tract by altering the microbiome, leading to higher colonies of pathogenic bacteria. When specific antibiotics are used to combat Lyme, those antibiotics can also affect mitochondrial stability.

CoQ10’s ability to restore mitochondrial function by enhancing ATP production, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, and regenerating vitamin E make it an important part of supportive therapy for horses with EPM and Lyme disease.
Blood thinners (warfarin) that are sometimes used off-label to treat chronic laminitis can have interactions with CoQ10, making the blood thinners less effective.
CoQ10 also has interactions with blood pressure meds, statins and beta blockers.
There are two forms of CoQ10: Ubiquinol and Ubiquinone.
Ubiquinol is the most bioavailable form of CoQ10, providing faster absorption. It is the only form that can recycle vitamins E and C.
Due to its high bioavailability, Ubiquinol dosage is less than that of Ubiquinone. However, some companies still choose to use Ubiquinone, as it is less expensive than Ubiquinol.

Canine memories are strong for a shorter period of time and are centered around scent-based recognition.
Horses have two blind spots: directly behind the tail and directly in front of the head.
Their depth perception is less than human’s, with much of their visual field coming from one eye; only seventy percent of the horse’s overall vision utilizes both eyes.3
Dogs have a narrower, 240-degree field of vision.
Both species have dichromatic vision, meaning they are red-green colorblind.

Horses can hear frequencies from 55 Hz to 33,000 Hz, which is much broader than the human hearing range of 20-20,000 Hz.

]]>Showing is often stressful for both rider and horse, whether competing at Training level or jumping the Grand Prix. Elite athletes in other sports, like track and field, swimming, and gymnastics, experience stress too, but these other sports don’t include an animal.
Riders get tense, and horses get tense as well. None of us are robots. Of course, there can be miscommunications and misunderstandings between horse and rider. Horses get frustrated sometimes, as do riders. But most of us seek harmony with our horses, alongside a level of understanding and respect.
Harmony of horse and rider is the foundation for every equestrian activity. Whether it be jumping, endurance, trail riding, barrel racing, eventing, or dressage.
Many years ago, legendary German equestrian Reiner Klimke was judging a dressage show at Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, Virginia. When asked about American dressage, his response was, “I don’t think your horses look like very happy dance partners.”
So, what does makes a happy equine [dance] partner?
A happy competition horse is in harmony with the rider, and the rider is in harmony with the horse:
The back is soft, and the horse is willing — maybe even eager.
The horse looks like he/she is enjoying itself.
The horse may give the impression of “I’ve got this.”
The spectators watching the horse may get the feeling of “I’d love to sit on that horse.”
In recognition and honor of horse-and-rider harmony, BioStar presents the Happy Horse Awards. The award winners are chosen by the judges based on the horse. Through these awards, we aim to help the support a more positive framework of acknowledging and honoring the horses and riders who are able to maintain harmony, even at the highest level of the sport.
An award recipient could be the winning horse with the highest score, OR it may be a horse that places below the winning ride. It may have made a few mistakes in the ring or not been quite as brilliant as the winning horse, but it still best promoted horse welfare and exemplified those happy, harmonious qualities we’re looking for.

]]>Among all of these memories, I can’t recall a single instance in which our riding habits led to a damaged suspensory ligament or tendon. In fact, the first bowed tendon I ever saw as a kid was a trainer’s riding prospect that obtained the injury while at the track.
These days, competition horses go from one carefully manicured arena at home to another carefully manicured surface at shows. Each one is often sand mixed with synthetic materials or wax-coated footing.

Unfortunately, these modern, “perfect” surfaces aren’t always what our horses’ connective tissues need and rarely provide benefits.

…competitive dressage rings were “made of” grass. Many of the courses designed for the hunter and jumper disciplines were also on grass (and featured more big, galloping, forward tracks than what we see today).
Some smaller shows had a dirt arena that frequently featured large, rain-made puddles.
Horses that could be described as “mudders” saw the puddles at ‘X’ or in the corner as no big deal. However, the horses that didn’t like water generally jumped, did impromptu leg yields, or dramatically spooked away from those same puddles.
The few sand arenas seen during that time tended to be shallow and/or deep in different spots, especially after a number of horses had gone around. These surfaces, in many ways, were far from ideal or “perfect.”
Connective tissues need varying surfaces for added strength and resilience. A conditioning routine that implements a rotation of differing footing also benefits:
The core
Joints
Proprioception (awareness of individual limb and whole body placement)
Balance
The nervous system
The respiratory system
All of these things put together can help build a horse’s overall confidence.
Walking horses on different ground surfaces (some soft, some hard) gives connective tissue the opportunity to build strength and resilience. Walking up and down hills and trotting over uneven ground allows connective tissues and joints to adjust.
Important note: soft ground does not mean deep. Footing experts say six inches or deeper actually increases the risk of tendon and ligament injury.
Think of proprioception as a constant feedback loop operating between the nervous system, brain, and body. It is responsible for coordinated movements of the body, balance, spatial awareness, and avoiding injury.
One of the extra benefits of conditioning horses on different surfaces is that it does increase proprioception.
An old horseman’s adage: a tincture of time.
Connective tissue strength can’t and doesn’t improve all at once, or even in one week. A suspensory injury isn’t going to heal in just a few weeks. Ligaments and tendons take time.
After six to eight weeks, your horse’s connective tissues and joints will have adjusted to these new surfaces, allowing you to…
…add longer walks, trot sets, or easy stretches at the canter.
And along the way, your horse will also be developing better balance and coordination.
Horses don’t have to condition on varied surfaces like 5* eventing horses (and you don’t have to let your inner cowgirl/cowboy out) in order to reap the benefits of training on different grounds.
Walking on varied surfaces is the best way to start.
If you have hills, use them!
Once you and your horse are more accustomed to less-than-perfect footing, try a short trot set in the grass…
…then a twenty-meter circle at the canter.
Pull the cavaletti out of the ring, and let your horse trot through it on a different surface.
As an added bonus, getting out of the arena helps the horse’s mind and confidence.
Back when I was living and training in Holland, it was common to take the horses for a ¼-mile to ½-mile, under saddle walk on the asphalt to cool out and relax after a training session. Some days we worked in the corn field, just cantering around, doing flying changes, and then hacking in the woods. It was not at all unusual to see multiple horses in quarter sheets trotting down the narrow asphalt lanes in Holland, coupled with the quintessential clip-clop, clip-clop sounds.
Collagen is an important component for improving the ligament’s structural integrity. Adding a bioavailable collagen, such as BioStar’s Ligatend

For the same reasons as horses (connective tissues, joints, and proprioception) giving our dogs varied surfaces to walk and run on is important.
Dogs that spend their lives walking on sidewalks need periods of soft terrain, uneven ground, slippery mud, and dirt.
Dogs that spend their lives on farms or are taken on frequent hikes are already accustomed to changes in surfaces. These dogs can benefit from obstacle enrichment – not as in jumping the obstacles, but by moving around them. Some examples of incorporated obstacles include:
Planks (even an old fence board without nails!)
Doggie cavalettis (which can be easily fashioned from muck rakes, leaf rakes, and upside down shovels)
You may be surprised at how your farm dog navigates something new.
Equestrians are often used to riding in a confined area, and dog owners tend to go on walks in the same neighborhood regularly. Sometimes fear creeps in when facing new environments, whether it’s being weary of the horse spooking or the dog becoming reactive.

If you are fearful, take baby steps! Have a friend ride with you if you are afraid of riding out of the arena, or keep your rides closer to the barn to start. After practicing for a couple of days, try to take the same route twice and gradually increase your laps.
With dogs, make sure you aren’t putting a lot of tension on the leash. Let your dog sniff around the new location, and reward them often!
As we overcome our fears, our horses and dogs become more confident too.
My horse, Lionheart, could be a very spooky horse on occasion. At first, riding him down the Dutch lane was spook central. He reacted to everything; the cows in the neighboring field, passing cars (even though drivers in Holland tend to be very respectful of horses and riders), or even a shadow across the road would cause him to spin and try to head back to the barn. Our solution? I started to sing to him on our walks, which made both of us relax.
Our horses and dogs benefit in mind and body when we expose them to varied terrain, and provide specific nutritional support when needed.

A single tap on our screens can quickly order food, pay bills, and buy almost anything on Amazon. We can learn how to fix something, try a new recipe, take on a new hobby, and search Google for answers to virtually any question that comes to mind.
Because of these benefits, we are attached to our cell phones as if they are another appendage.
This is the twenty-first century human.
I walked in for my appointment and noticed five women and one man sat in the waiting area, heads bowed, reading the screens on their phones. Another woman came in after me, sat down, took out her phone, and began to type. None of them looked up, looked around, met my gaze, smiled, laughed, or even frowned.
I had a sudden overwhelming urge to be rebellious and not take my phone out.
I overheard bits of a conversation between two employees at the counter describing a difficult customer. I watched clients with newly refreshed hairdos walk alongside their stylists towards the counter to pay. I also looked at people’s shoes (I am a bit of a shoe fanatic, even though most of the shoes I wear these days are in the ‘supportive’ category).
For whatever reason, at that hair salon, a realization hit me. I was suddenly remembering all the times I’ve…
Been in barns where people are constantly scrolling, texting, or checking social media
Witnessed riders (can’t count the number of times) fiddling with their phones while in the saddle or hand grazing their horses
Heard a panicked voice say (or said it myself), “I can’t find my cell phone!”
Look, I am on my phone just as much as everyone else. No matter what business or industry you are in, cell phones are a necessity. Even managing families, kids, and lives necessitates the use of a cell phone.
The near instant feedback we get from posting, texting, and scrolling hooks us onto the desire to constantly engage.
However, the more connected we are to our phones, the less connected we are to our horses, cats, and dogs.
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are not reserved for just cell phones; EMFs are emitted through…
Garage door openers
Cell phone towers
Computers
Power lines
Radio and television signals
Cordless telephones
Smart watches
Smart meters on electric and gas homes
Essentially anything that uses electricity in our homes can generate EMFs.
So, I can’t help but wonder what the daily EMF assault is doing to us and our animals.
Before diving into this topic, I thought about my friends who have sensitivities to EMFs. I don’t think I’m particularly sensitive, but maybe time will tell.
As far as understanding animal sensitivity to EMFs – I wasn’t sure. The not knowing is what got me thinking, researching, starting to pay more attention, and taking stock of my property’s exposure.
I started by adding up the EMF exposure in my house: two wi-fi routers (always running), a handful of appliances, one computer, two televisions, an iPad, and two portable HEPA air purifying machines. While I don’t own a microwave, I do have two ovens.
The horses take shelter in run-in sheds – without wi-fi. I rarely have my cell phone on me when I am out with the horses. When I do take my cell phone, I put it in the back pocket of my jeans (which I have since discovered is a big no-no). I have also been known to stick my phone in the front pocket of my jeans, speaker facing out (another big no-no), while simultaneously conducting a phone call and making meals for the dogs, taking laundry out of the dryer, filling bird feeders, and/or taking the trash out.
Something else I noted: my farm is located several miles away from the nearest cell tower.
I came across some research outlining the effects EMFs have on the environment. The study, published in May 2021, concluded, “Broad wildlife effects have been seen on orientation and migration, food finding, reproduction, mating, nest and den building, territorial maintenance and defense, and longevity and survivorship” (Levitt et al., p. 81).1
In July 2021, a subsequent study was released. It noted, “Many species of flora and fauna, because of unique physiologies and habitats, are sensitive to exogenous EMF in ways that surpass human reactivity” (Levitt et al., p. 327).2
In other words: some plants and animals are more sensitive to EMFs than we are.
The study highlighted specific mammals – bats, deer, whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and walruses – that demonstrated effects from low-level anthropogenic EMFs. The study also noted that effects have been observed in birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, microbes, and many species of flora.
Electromagnetic wave
Most current EMF-related studies focus on rats and mice.
Of which, increased oxidative stress was shown to be influenced by EMFs.3
EMFs have also been observed inducing stress and anxiety in rats.4
Other research on rats and mice have pointed to brain cancer, DNA damage, immune dysfunction, damaging impacts on reproduction, sleep changes, hyperactivity, and memory damage.
The first recommendation I encountered was to simply turn off the cellphone. I thought to myself, “That isn’t going to happen.”
The next suggestion was to forward all cell calls to a land line… I literally laughed out loud.
There had to be more practical and realistic approaches.
Use airplane mode; it turns off most transmitting antennas.
Turn off mobile data when not using the internet, and turn bluetooth off when not in use. Otherwise, all the antennas are transmitting all the time.
Set up a low-EMF sleep sanctuary in the bedroom: use a battery powered alarm clock, and don’t charge a cell phone near your bed.
Do not rest laptops or tablets on your lap; they emit the same radio frequency as cell phones.
Turn off wi-fi routers at night, or get a timer that automatically turns it off and turns on at specified times.
The addiction to cell phones – and the instant feedback/gratification – doesn’t allow us to immerse ourselves in the reality we live in. When we are sucked into our cell phones, we miss out on the rhythms and life forces of the plants and animals we share space with.
Unlike humans, animals always live in a present state of consciousness, focusing solely on the now. Their ability to live every minute in the moment is one of the greatest lessons they teach us. Every second we spend with them, they are showing us what it means to be present.

I’ve started giving myself ‘timeouts:’ no devices, just being present with the horses and dogs, and taking a walk in the field to clear my mind. Nothing exists except for the ground under my feet, the environment my eyes see, the scents I smell, and the feelings in my heart.
When I give myself a ‘timeout,’ I notice little things I’ve been missing while being preoccupied on my devices. I’m suddenly aware of the wild milkweed and calendula, the berries on the cedars, and the occasional raccoon scat. I hear the blue jays ratting out my presence on the edge of the woods. I breathe in the smell of fescue, oak bark, sycamores, and a wild patch of pennyroyal.
And you know what? I feel better after I’ve had a ‘timeout.’
It is incredibly challenging to be present in our uber technological, always multi-tasking, instantly communicating world. Distractions happen simultaneously: a new email, incoming texts, the ring of a phone call, someone commenting on our social media post…
Our daily calendars are full of appointments, lessons, and meetings. Our lives revolve around dealing with problems and finding solutions: the tractor tire needs replacing, the barn hose is leaking, shavings are running low, the vet is running late, show entries need organizing, appeasing upset clients, figuring out what to eat for dinner, making space for a friend having a rough time, trying to make time to vacuum the house tomorrow…
There is no doubt in my mind that horses, dogs, and cats appreciate when we are present with them, especially when we aren’t distracted and they can acknowledge our gratitude for their beingness.
Maybe animal welfare begins with us being present and making the most of the quiet times with our animals, sans cell phone. We can be with them, holding appreciation and respect and amazement, as they tolerate our twenty-first century distortions.

]]>In most cases, the owners tried to upgrade their dog’s diet to include fresh food or a new supplement, and the dog just didn’t go for it. Sometimes dogs truly are getting too many supplements, which can also contribute to dogs becoming picky.
Adding a supplement to an already picky dog’s bowl might cause them to hesitate, resulting in the dog digging in his heels and declining dinner altogether. Whether your dog is sensitive to change or has a palate firmly hooked on ultra-processed feed, this process can be stressful.
BUT, it doesn’t have to be! Understanding your dog’s preferences and incorporating compassionate strategies at mealtime can help even the fussiest of dogs enjoy their food.

Rotating proteins has always worked for these two, along with incorporating a variety of textures in their meals and treats (such as freeze-dried food and Carna4’s tasty baked nuggets).
Still, they’re quirky.
Bravo won’t eat a meal with any type of supplement mixed in without gradual exposure. He needs to start with a sprinkle of something new as an invitation to smell and taste something. If he doesn’t want to eat it, and it is not absolutely necessary that he eats it, I accept his “No!” It is a constant process to check in with Bravo. This process has created less of a preferential eater over time and a dog who now trusts what is in his bowl.
Making meatballs containing the absolute minimum of additions and fed away from mealtime also works when incorporating new products into Bravo’s feeding routine. He watches me make them, sniffing each ingredient, and eats them willingly. These ingredients end up in the bowl once he’s accepted them.
For Chewie, my younger Aussie, eating in new environments is so exciting! Eating does not get top priority when he is stressed. Changes in routine or changes of feeding location have also deterred him from eating. With careful confidence building, he can now adjust to new places and routines and eat in a relaxed state.
Both of my dogs (and myself) are social eaters. They love watching me prepare their meals and being included in the kitchen. Both prefer to eat if I am relaxed and nearby. Sometimes it is as simple as hanging out in a neutral state without making a big deal of it.
Their preferences do not make them picky.
Bravo went through a long phase of not eating breakfast. When fed at lunch or dinner time, he ate normally. It ended up being a multi-faceted issue.
His eating pattern was partially related to weak digestion. With diet changes, acupressure, and Chinese herbs, Bravo (and his appetite) recovered from this brilliantly!
The other issue was more subtle; it seemed that it was related to the posture of eating from floor-level. Though there was nothing obvious, he hesitated when he lowered his head all the way down. It was worse in the morning and after rest. Why was Bravo feeling less limber? We did rule out lameness, and several vets had not found any issue.
Despite his digestive system being in better shape and him regaining regular morning-time hunger, Bravo still didn’t want breakfast. I had a feeling to elevate his bowl with a cardboard box atop a yoga mat. Lo and behold: Bravo ate breakfast without issue and so willingly! Mid-foreleg height seemed to bring him the most comfort.
This prompted me to whisk him off to a more savvy vet — with a better eye and better hands — to evaluate him. Soft tissue pain around his elbows was one issue. Diagnostics, specialists, a vet chiropractor, and acupuncture were the answers to help ease his discomfort.
Healthy dogs may skip a meal or two. Assuming they’re hydrated, that’s usually okay! However, it may be time to check with your vet if…
They skip multiple meals.
They’re showing signs of stress.
You’re feeling uneasy about their eating patterns.
Above all else, chronically picky or newly picky dogs need a vet check.
Knowing what triggers your dog’s pickiness can help determine whether your dog is uncomfortable and/or just has preferences when eating.
A bowl sliding or making noise on a hard floor can be bothersome for sensitive dogs, as well as paws sliding on slick floors. Eating in a corner can amplify sounds, and not being able to see all around them can create stress.*
As it was with Bravo, subtle pain may not be obvious, and it can cause some issues with getting into a comfortable posture to eat. Elevating the food to mid-foreleg length will give you a clue; eating better at this height means off to the vet to see what hurts.

A chronically low morning-time appetite may indicate weak digestive fire, or “agni,” in Ayurvedic terms. Optimal digestive power is strongest past the morning hours, which is why the heaviest meals are traditionally eaten mid-day. Without adequate energy or fire in the stomach, food is not digested optimally. It might stagnate in the stomach, taking longer than normal to be digested.
These factors can lead to other issues down the line. They might also cause a dog to feel slightly uncomfortable after eating, therefore creating a negative association with what’s in the bowl.
Experiment with feeding late in the morning or around lunchtime. If your dog then gobbles his food eagerly at those times, you’re onto something!
Warm food creates enticing odors and may be easier to digest, as the body does not need to warm it. This is an efficient way to assist the digestive process in older dogs and dogs with weak digestion.
Texture preferences are also a consideration, given the attractive crunch of kibble. Soupy food turns off some dogs. I’ve found that most dogs like their food made to a texture similar to thick oatmeal.

Dogs can smell one teaspoon of sugar dissolved in a water body the size of two Olympic-sized swimming pools. Food supplements medications one bowl a carnival of tastes. For some dogs, it is sensory overload; for others, it’s no big deal.
Do I want all of my daily supplements mixed into my delicious dinner? No thanks!
Mix must-have supplements into a tasty tidbit, like a meatball or pill hider (check out The Forever Dog Life Book for recipes!). This is an appetizer, not to be served with the main course. Sardines, mackerel, or salmon in water are all good mixers.
Free the meal from “supplement pollution,” and keep the meal just food, nothing extra.
There are dogs who take longer to eat something new. Start with just a “titch” (a smidge, a pinch) of the new supplement, gradually increasing to the full suggested amount and giving your dog time to acclimate to the smell and taste.

When serving a meal, it is vital to feel confident about what you have chosen to feed your dog. If you feel hesitant while serving a supplement or new food, stop! Feeding the dog something you are not sure about may contribute to your dog’s gastronomic experience (as well as your own stress).
When choosing things to add to your dog’s bowl, add each item one at a time and see how your dog responds. Does this feel right for your dog? If not, it might mean more information is needed or, simply, your intention for feeding it needs reconsidering. It could also mean that it is not a good fit for your dog at this time. It may have nothing to do with the quality of the food or supplement. Rather, it is about other factors. This is your intuition talking; it’s a source of communication between you and your dog.
