Stephanie came to Bellingham at 18 years old to attend Western, and after working for the Bellingham Herald post-graduation, she joined the Bells in 2013 as their Marketing Director. Not too long after, she moved into the General Manager role in 2016 before additionally taking on her role as President in 2024, making this year her 13th with the Bells. In this episode, Stephanie talks to us about the importance of keeping it local at Joe Martin stadium, what the economic ins and outs of running a collegiate-based team look like, as well as what the experience of hitting a moving target that is running a sports organization in an arts-focused community. Plus, we hear a little insight into how they curate an electric experience for everyone who comes to the ballpark and not just die hard sports fans, and Leo takes a swing at seeing how he can be Dinger for a game.

Executive Director Alice Clark and Program Director Lindsey Payne Johnstone joined us to tell about the role DBP plays in keeping our downtown core vibrant and thriving. The Downtown Bellingham Partnership (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit) is famous for is events - First Fridays, Wine Walk, and especially the iconic Downtown Sounds, a free-admission outdoor concert series which draws thousands of people and closes three city blocks over five Wednesdays in the summer.

But the DBP crew is responsible for so much more: administrating micro grants for storefront improvements, public art efforts, graffiti cleanup, spring floral baskets, and safety patrols. Over the past three years, they've also seen their role expand further into business development support and advocacy, including networking with other downtown organizations down the I-5 corridor. We talked about the fentanyl crisis, how the empty office buildings mean less breakfast & lunchtime foot traffic for small businesses, and the emotional work of advocating for their constituents.

Brothers Chay Tan and Lee Tan purchased Coconut Kenny's back in 2004. Chay tells the stories of the early days - purchasing on an owner contract, slinging real estate to pay the bills, and stretching every marketing dollar. Now, the family-owned chain has 7 stores in 3 counties and has opened up co-ownership opportunities to their employees and managers. In 2018, Chay partnered with a former employee to create Downtime Taps, which was the first self-serve tap room in Washington State.

Ben Kinney is a giant in the real estate industry, the owner of the Bellingham-based sales team that consistently is one of the top teams in the Keller Williams' US brokerages. Ben himself owns multiple brokerage franchises in the US and London, along with BRIVITY, BKCO Mortage, Place Inc and other companies ancillary to the real estate world.

But Ben's story didn't start easily. Like in the game Monopoly, for Ben it started with one deed and then one green house. Ben was working as a cable guy for Comcast, and chatting with a customer one day:

"I grew up super poor…. Home ownership was nothing I had never considered for myself.

She said "I own a duplex", and I said "why didn't you just buy a house?"

She said, "I own both sides… the neighbors next door? Their rent pays my mortgage.""

I looked at her and I said, "You live for free?!""

So sit back and listen to the story of this regular guy and phenomenal business owner who lives right here in Whatcom County. Ben also talks about the importance of giving, of focusing on what you can control, and the impromptu cross-country road trip that changed both his business and his relationship to work. Wes goes deep into what it takes to make a business work. In the early days, Wes could be found changing the oil in someone's car, with a phone to his ear talking over the next Woods expansion.

There's more - analyzing new markets, taking on opportunities others would deem too risky, expanding to 19 locations, and taking Woods from a small business to a big one.

Ray's story stretches from being a camp counsellor to moving across the country, to managing a Special Projects team at a tech company, to starting Skookum Kids as a side project and eventually becoming the full-time director.

Skookum Kids was built around a single idea. It's an organization whose mission statement says it all "if we take great care of people, the mission will take care of itself. So we work really hard to make this a delightful place to volunteer and to be a foster parent. We believe in health for all, meaning that no person should ever have to sacrifice their own health to serve kids….Healthy, happy well-supported people get more done."

Today, Ziad is working with cutting-edge legal technology that could cut down attorney time (and thus billable hours), making justice more accessible to everyone, and is also spearheading the #InclusionDeed initiative, an idea he had while walking on a treadmill just a couple weeks ago.

Ziad's success has been through service, and also through raising these leaders. He believes that the top leader of an organization or company needs to step back from the business itself, and interact with the broader community. To look out for the larger trends, changes, and issues. To use a ship metaphor, he's not the captain or the crew - that's what his leaders are responsible for: "I tell people now that my staff is directing the ship - I'm directing the waves."
