The second and final Free Comic Book Day freebie from Dark Horse Comics boasts Legend of Korra and Nintendo’s ARMS.

Silver

We outlined the Gold offering from Dark Horse a few days ago, and now their Silver book has been officially unveiled. It’s a pretty good one too. Actually, depending on your interests, this might be better.

Legend of Korra is a spinoff of Avatar, and has a massive audience. So that’s a marquee inclusion right there. Then there’s ARMS, which is Nintendo’s latest IP. It’s a fighting game that features characters with spring-like arms. Hence the name. And, since it’s Nintendo, I’m sure you could have guessed that it’s already got a great following too.

Here’s the rundown:

First, Avatar Korra pairs up with an unlikely sidekick for a super-important, top-secret mission to track down a pack of lost pets in a story written by The Legend of Korra co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino with art by Jayd Aït-Kaci and Vivian Ng.

In a story based on Nintendo’s exclusive fighting game ARMS, a young fighter trains tirelessly to reach the top in the ARMS League Grand Prix—but first, he must defeat 599 other contenders! ARMS is written by Ian Flynn (Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man) with art by Joe Ng (Street Fighter, Overwatch: Binary).

And to wrap things up, our FCBD all-ages issue features an equally beautiful and fun The Legend of Korracover by Jayd Aït-Kaci and Vivian Ng!

Free Comic Book Day is May 5th, 2018.

No, not art books, Dark Horse is going all in on Nintendo’s ARMS with a series of upcoming graphic novels.

Wait, does ARMS even have a story?

So, I was under the impression that ARMS didn’t even really have a story behind it. I don’t think that’s a reach really either. The colorful fighter hit earlier this year for the Switch, and we liked it just fine. Thing is though, it really didn’t offer much of a background for its fast and fun fighting.

Maybe that’s the point here though, as Dark Horse could easily fill in a few of those blanks. Aside from publishing some excellent art tomes in partnership with Nintendo, the company is -primarily- a comic book maker after all. And that means that they know full well how to tell a quality story.

And before you say something about these being art books, please understand that Dark Horse went out of their way to call them “graphic novels”. So they’re apparently quite serious about making a narrative for ARMS here. Just don’t go looking for hints to what the might be right now, as it seems to be pretty tightly under wraps.

There’s a good reason for that too, since the ARMS titles are about a year out. Dark Horse says fans should expect them to start hitting shelves in the fall of 2018.

We’re a little late in posting this, but the game of the month for June 2017 was indeed chosen by the BG staff. And yes, it’s Crash.

Crash, bang, boom

Have to say, I’m pretty pleased with this one on a personal level. As a big Crash Bandicoot fan from the PSOne days, I was really looking forward to this re-birth for the character. And as I basically said in my review, the game is GREAT. Always a nice surprise.

Crash Bandicoot: The N.Sane Trilogy is one of those moments in gaming that everything comes together in a near-perfect way. Excellent graphics and sound are layered on a trilogy of games that already played beautifully and offered a terrific experience. If you’re a platformer fan, a Crash fan, or just like good video games, you should probably check this one out.
Final Score: 90%

With beefed up graphics and that same old Crash personality and gameplay (more or less), it’s a winner. In fact, the N.Sane Trilogy easily took our GotM for June, besting titles like Tekken 7. Not that it was unanimous mind you.

June saw a few other games release, that are actually pretty high profile.

Landing in a distant second place was ARMS from Nintendo. The first original fighting game to hit the freshman Switch console, ARMS offers a unique take on the genre that includes spring-arms that you launch at your opponent.

The roster of fighters isn’t that large and there’s no “story” to speak of, but it’s still an awfully attractive game. Why? Aside from the solid gameplay, for that patented Nintendo charm of course.

Arms

From our review:

Arms is a fantastically unique fighting game, without the pieces that make fighting games unapproachable for new players. A colorful style and wicked character designs push the wacky ideas to their limits, and all of it comes together for a proper package.
Final Score: 92%

And lastly, we have another collected edition for the PS4. This one snagged just a single vote (sorry Mike), but contains a trio of titles. They all look great too. I’m talking about the WipEout Omega Collection.

WIPEOUT™ OMEGA COLLECTION

If you don’t remember, WipEout was a series made famous by the PSOne. Not that it didn’t appear on other consoles as well, but the original PlayStation is where it’s best known. Picture Nintendo’s seemingly forgotten F-Zero series, but with a little less personality and whole lot zippier sense of speed, and you have an idea of what this one’s all about.

A worthy notable for June? Definitely; and probably worth a look too if you’re in the market for some futuristic racing action.

The Fighting Game genre has been distilled successfully into a fast, intelligent game in Arms for the Nintendo Switch.

Arms may not be immediately related to its fighting game staple cousins, and while its just as easy to suggest that it eschews tenants of the genre that have become fundamental, and is only better for it, its hard to deny that it is, at the end of the day, one of them: a competitive face-off that tests skill and tenacity in equal measure.

Arms features a cast of characters whose arms are stretchy for different reasons- coiled springs, ribbons, bandages, and hair among them. And each is designed with a level of personality that is hard to ignore.

The aesthetic of the game as a whole is inspired, yet unique. It’s not just the likes of fighters like Min-min, who sports ramen hair and arms under an over-turned bowl beanie, but the fans that surround the stages as well, wearing paraphernalia related to their favorite contestants, who give life to the world and the sport around which its built.  Everything from the interface to the rinks is clean and colorful, and easy to understand at a glance.

Fun at First Look

Arms

One of Arms greatest strengths is its simplicity, and it’s also one of the things that separates it from the competitive fighters that bring millions of views in during events like Evo.

There are no combo strings or complicated inputs. From character to character, and even arm to arm, the controls don’t change. It should be mentioned that they do however, if you change your controller. Arms supports everything from a single-joycon to a pro-controller.

With motion controls, you punch to punch, point your arms inwards to block, and move by tilting the joycons where you want to go. Without even hitting a button, you can avoid punches, block barrages, and dish out a beat-down.

Including grabs, the motion elements aren’t just simple to execute- they match intuitively what’s happening on the screen. The behind the back perspective and matching right and left hands leave no room for confusion.

While punching with both hands may not seem a sensible input for a game like Street Fighter, in Arms, a grab is literally both arms darting forward, with a green net between them. Without knowing the command, you can guess based on visual cues.

Jumping, dodging, and supers are put onto buttons, but even then your options are limited (by virtue of the thumbs up pose) and new players won’t be fumbling with face buttons. Pass out the joycons, and by the end of the first match, everyone will understand the basics.

A Colorful Onion

Arms

Basics are easily understandable in most games, of course. What makes Arms unique is that even the advanced mechanics are simple.  Every character has one or two understandable flairs that set them apart.

The aforementioned Min-min, for example, can execute a midair kick to knock back attacks, giving her a window to counter-attack. She also can power up one of her noodle arms into a dragon. That greatly increases its offensive presence until she’s knocked down.

Spring Man, meanwhile, can knock away attacks when charging. And when he reaches low health, all of his attacks are charged automatically. It only takes a little bit to set each fighter drastically apart. While proper counters will surely grow more obvious with time, in my time with the game, no match up seemed handicapped.

Customizable arms further let players adapt and adjust until their play-style is well-matched.

Heavier, slow moving arms are both offensively immovable and defensively effective. But their slow movement can be a hindrance against mobile opponents. Homing arms can be helpful, but the loss of precise control makes you more predictable. Some arms can curve around obstacles. Some hit wider areas of affect, vertically or horizontally. They run the gamut from offensive to defensive, and everything in between and on the outside.

Bringing the right arms for each situation (you can pick from a set of three for every match, but you’re limited to only those three for each set), and learning how to utilize their and your character’s unique traits will set you apart from the players who are just starting.

Arms does not have a low skill ceiling, no matter what its simplicity might suggest. At the end of the day, players are still using the same tool-set, just as they do in more traditional fighting games. Its just that the tool-set is simple, understandable.

The ability to control spacing, to read your opponent’s every action, to balance defense and offense, to bob and weave are all vital to competing against the best (ie, players who’ve passed the prerequisite to ranked play).

It takes just as much dedication to be the best. It just takes a lot less time to feel like it.

And Eat It, Too

Arms

Arms isn’t just a competitive sport.  It’s a party, too, with modes to match. Typical one versus one matches are the highlight, but Arms lobbies also consist of V-ball (a mode wherein players keep a bomb off their side of the net), Basketball (where only grabs give players points, and grabs are turned into dunks), Skill Shot (where players face off with point-giving clusters of targets between them), two versus two (players are frustratingly tethered together, limiting movement and options, but opening up different kinds of strategies), Free for all (where the player who keeps himself out of sight and out of mind will find victory most often), and even a co-operative 3v1 fight against Headlock, the game’s final boss.

In online lobbies, players can be thrown into any and all of the aforementioned modes. You can even bring a local buddy too. One minute, you might be teamed up with another player in a tense two versus two, and the next you’ll find yourself dueling to the death in a one versus one.

Even if you want to continue to face-off against that player, you may find yourself moved next into a cooperative bossfight with three other players. Meanwhile, your new rival is placed into a V-ball match with some newcomers. It has its advantages- creating a party-like atmosphere where anything can happen, and always will- and disadvantages (some of the other modes do lose their luster).

Stock Modes

Arms

Playing against bots is an option, offline. Grand Prix, whether as a single-player or with a local partner, is a quick barrage of ten bouts, most simple fights, some V-Ball or Skill Shot.  Difficulty can be set, and more money can be earned by higher numbers.

Perfects give players extra cash (which can be spent on new Arms- all characters are unlocked from the top). So sometimes the easier route can be more lucrative.  The biggest reward, early on, is beating the Grand Prix on a difficulty of 4 or above. That gives players access to Ranked Battles.

You’ll have to understand the mechanics of the game before doing so, but the ability to try a battle as many times as you want without penalty (and even stop and save in the middle of a Grand Prix) make it a surmountable task. That’s true even for less experienced players. Tenacity and miracles can always trump AI, after all. Rank 4 or above Grand Prix also end with a battle against Headlock, which rewards a hearty chunk of change.

When playing offline with friends, players can select their map of choice. They can also select their mode, select their round count, and change the usual settings. Four players can crowd around a single Switch, or players can play multiple Switches against each other wirelessly.

A practice mode is included as well, as this is a fighting game. Players can pick what skillset they want to practice, and fight against AI opponents with a focus. It’s not a bad place to practice your basics, if Grand Prix’s fourth difficulty or the human players online are constantly getting the better of you.

One-Two Punch

Arms is a complete fighting game. Even so though, the developers are releasing free content (starting with Max Brass, a new playable character who already shows up in Grand Prix) for players to enjoy in the future, to ensure the knockout. If the quality and timing are as spot on as Splatoon’s season, then players will be on Arms for some time to come.

Final Verdict

Whether you’re hoping for a party brawl or an intense face-down, Arms has got you covered with its gamut of modes and ways to play.  The motion inputs amplify player control. And like Splatoon before it, players who opt for a traditional set-up will be doing themselves a disservice.

That is, so long as they can get used to moving their wrists in sometimes uncomfortable ways. Arms maintains a moment-to-moment intensity where players on their back foot can always come back if they play a smarter, better game than their opponent. And that’s what will give it staying power. Simplicity, intensity: Arms has it all.

Yes Nintendo Switch gamers, it’s ARMS time. Nintendo’s latest original IP hits their latest console, along with a few other offerings.

A spring-loaded good time

ARMS is the main event this week, there’s little doubt of that. Being a new IP is one thing, but being a new Nintendo IP for a Nintendo console that has little in the way of a library is another. Basically, I think it’d be foolish to think that ARMS will do anything but sell extremely well.

And it actually looks like a fun time too. I’ve heard the criticisms that the game has too few characters, and no story mode, but honestly – who cares? This is Nintendo we’re talking about here. Fans don’t really care if a game is lacking in some areas as long as it plays great. I doubt Nintendo would drop ARMS out there as a launch window title if it didn’t.

If you’re not sold however, hang on for a bit and check out our review, which’ll more than likely be along next week.

As for the rest of the Download this week, it’s about what you’d expect, with a twist. The twist being that there are actually some more Switch games to talk about. Both Cave Story+ and Mighty Gunvolt Burst arrive this week, along with the signature Neo Geo offering.

One thing I was sure we’d be talking about as well, post E3, was the Virtual Console on the Switch. And yet, here we are and there isn’t one. Still waiting Nintendo…

Here’s the full rundown on what’s available this week:

Nintendo held their digital spotlight on Monday morning, and despite a few blockbuster announcements, we are still missing keys to the Switch’s future like the Virtual Console.

Totally new announcements:

The digital spotlight had a fair few totally new announcements to make.

Kirby, set for release in 2018, was shown. It appears as though Kirby can capture different enemies and have them fight alongside him (her? it?). Otherwise, this looks like a Kirby game. Its whimsical, cute and has familiar faces.

Check out the trailer below:

Nintendo also announced a new Yoshi game coming to the Switch in 2018. The art is akin to yarn yoshi, but there is no indication of that in the title. Catch the trailer below:

The biggest bombshell, in my opinion, from the digital spotlight was the announcement that Matroid Prime 4 is indeed in development for the Switch. We don’t have any information about what that really means, though. It wasn’t given a prospective release date or even range.

That doesn’t matter though, because Metroid. I wish it were a classic 2D style, but I will take whatever I can get.

Here is the trailer, showing a lot of nothing:

Pokemon Company also announced that a “core” Pokemon game is in development for the Switch. It will likely not release in the next year, however.

Some stuff we were expecting:

It is with a heavy heart that I report that there was no new F-Zero, Animal Crossing or Smash Deluxe announced. I’m not too broken up about that though. We got new trailers for a bunch of previously announced games.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was shown. Going in a bit of a new direction, the game seems to be a bit more cartoonish than the first and second games were, but I’m not too broken up about that.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is coming out “Holiday 2017,” and is one of my most anticipated games of the year. Check out the trailer:

We also received a new trailer for Fire Emblem Warriors. This is the Dynasty Warriors type game focused on combatting tons and tons of enemies.  Here is the trailer:

And finally, Nintendo showed off Mario Odyssey. While I could sit here and try to explain to you readers everything the trailer shows, I would fail. Mario is going to be going around diverse and incredible worlds collecting coins and moons, spending the coins and performing platforming exploits that would make Nathan Drake proud.

Mario also has a neat little hat that allows him to “Cap-ture” enemies and control them. Again, super cool and I can’t wait to get my hands on it October 27, later this year.

Here is the trailer:

The add-ons and the little things:

The downloadable expansions for Breath of the Wild were shown and teased. The first expansion, The Master Trials, includes the Trial of the Sword, Hero’s Path, new armor and a “master mode.” The second expansion, which is coming Fall 2017, is called The Champions’ Ballad. We don’t have much more than that though.

Here is the trailer:

At the beginning of the presentation, Nintendo had a brief montage of games coming to the Switch. Rocket League will be coming to the console later this year with exclusive gear and cars. Psyonix also confirmed that cross-network play will be possible, allowing Switch players to play with players on other platforms.

And one more thing:

After the presenation, Nintendo dropped another bomb.

Metroid: Samus Returns will be debuting on the 3DS in September of this year. I can’t believe we are receiving a new 2D Metroid, as you will have noticed in my comments on Prime 4, but I am excited.

Here is that trailer:

June isn’t the most traditionally busy month for new games. This year though, there are a few nice highlights.

The King of Iron Bandicoot ARMS

Three big releases hit for the month of June with Tekken 7, ARMS, and Crash Bandicoot. And Tekken 7 is right around the corner.

The title lands at retail this Friday, June 2nd, bringing the familiar cast of characters back for another round. This time too, you can look forward to a Street Fighter crossover as Akuma is set to play a part in this Mishima saga capper.

Moving over to console exclusives, both Crash Bandicoot’s remade trilogy and Nintendo’s new IP ARMS arrive. With Crash, you more or less know what you’re getting. And by that, I mean fantastic platforming gameplay and a shiny new coat of PS4-paint. With ARMS, well it’s a little less certain.

What’s important to keep in mind though, is that ARMS is a Nintendo IP, and the company rarely makes missteps with its own properties. We actually took a look at the ‘global test-punch’ for the game too, and were pretty happy with it.

So all in all, not a bad month. And it’s a sight better than what’s on the way in July. ‘Cause that’s looking like the wasteland that we’re all used to.

While a learning curve separates motion controls from mobile play, everything is in its place for the Arms Global Testpunch.

Arms is the latest in stylish new IP from Nintendo, a brawler that simplifies fighting mechanics, in a nutshell, to three attacking options (right punch, left punch, and grab) and a handful of defensive options (blocks, jumps, and dashes).  Spacing, timing, and momentum are key, as they are in the much more complicated genre staples.  But there’s no complicated combo-strings or button combinations.  Punch right, punch left, or punch both- that’s your bread and butter.

Plenty of Character

Global TestpunchThings become more interesting when you add in the number of characters and their vastly different abilities (Ninjara’s ability to disappear when dodging makes him great at countering, and while Master Mummy’s sheer size is not ideal in FFAs, his ability to heal while blocking can be invaluable when the attention is off of you).  Countless selections of “arms” helps, too.  Think of each as a super-powered boxing glove.  A rare few even look like boxing gloves, like the Sparky, which can shock opponents and leave them open to attack.  Some are less straightforward.  The Dragon doesn’t spring out all the way at your foes, instead firing a delayed beam that’s especially useful when set up by space-controlling arms like the Ramram.  The Global Testpunch features a standard three arms per character, but still gives you an idea of the variety and effectiveness of each.

While the three characters announced with the latest Nintendo Direct aren’t available for hands on, the seven available give you more than enough to play around with.  My personal favorites were Minmin, whose back-flipping kick ability was useful for opening up counter opportunities, and Master Mummy, whose sheer weight made me feel like I had the best of every situation (even when I didn’t).

Motion Controls- A Learning Curve

Global TestpunchI played using the motion controls during my hour of play, holding one Joycon in each hand (I recommend the wrist-strap add-on, not because you’ll necessarily be chucking your controllers, but because the added form makes for a more comfortable grip).  I didn’t have any detection issues- if I punched with my right arm, my character would punch with his right arm.  For better or worse, the arm’s curve matched my own.  In the first few matches of play, I would often inadvertently send a heavy arm slowly (and safely- for my opponent) in the wrong direction.  By the end of the hour, though, my fists were flying where I meant them to (again, for better or worse).

That hour of play, however, showed me my failings with the motion control.  Moving forwards and back requires tilting the wrists forward or back, which is a stretch at best (mildly uncomfortable at worst).  You’ll be doing a lot of moving forwards and back, and side to side.  There seemed to be a definite difference in the sheer actions per minute and smoothness of maneuverability between players on controllers and players using motion controls.  It’s why I ended up sticking with Master Mummy in the first place- a walking tank doesn’t need to move much.

Sometimes, when players moved laterally at great speeds, it felt like every punch I threw was off the mark, no matter how much I curved it.  Characters have to turn to face their foe before punching, especially after having been knocked down.  Sometimes, it doesn’t seem fast enough- leading to several matches where I couldn’t even position myself to properly face my opponent and took a hard chunk of damage for what seemed to be out of my control.

Many Ways to Play

Global Testpunch

The Global Global Testpunch had several modes on offering.  Once you enter a public room, you and nine other consoles are put into random bouts together.  I enjoyed the lobbies, and the ability to see how many coins people had stacked up (three per win, two per draw, and one per loss) over their time in the room.  Often I used that to indicate who I would target in a three-player free for all.

Which is just one of the battle-types that you could end up in.  The standard one versus one fights are excellent, forcing you to show your superiority in spacing, maneuverability, offense, and defense.  Three player Free for Alls were a blast as well, and made positioning a priority (you don’t want to get stuck between two opponents). Two versus two matches were probably my favorite.  Players were tied together, meaning if you threw one opponent, you’d send both flying. The best teams I found combined a Master Mummy or Helix with a quicker player, like Ninjara or Ribbon Girl, for a balance of offense and defense.  Players have to be mindful of their teammates as well, because friendly fire can stop your ally’s attacks and leave him open to a flurry of fists.  Lastly, one versus one or two versus two V-Ball mixes things up, having players punch a bomb back and forth over a net until it explodes.  These matches rarely went on for more than four to six points due to the match timer, so don’t expect a full-set with epic comebacks.

Hit the Global Testpunch Yourself

Global Testpunch

Next week, V-Ball will be replaced with Hoops, which will see players dunking each other in a basket-ball game.  We’ll let you know how that goes, or you can be sure to hop on yourself.  The Global Testpunch is a free download.  Next weekend’s start times (each lasting for about an hour) are the following:

6/2 Friday (NA only) 5:00 PM PST

6/3 Saturday 5:00 AM PST; 11:00 AM PST; 5:00 PM PST

6/4 Sunday 5:00 AM PST; 11:00AM PST

Overall, I really enjoyed my first weekend with the Global Testpunch.  While I’m tempted to put more time in on a controller, I’ll probably end up sticking with the motion controls.  Hopefully I can adjust to the awkward movement and master a more mobile fighting style so that I can get the most out of the other characters.  Otherwise, I’ll master Master Mummy and the defensive, slow advance (I find being grabbed helps close distance) that worked so well for me this weekend.

If you aren’t able to join the Global Testpunch this coming weekend, you can rest assured the wait won’t be long.  Arms launches on June 16, 2017.

Another Nintendo Direct has come and gone, and the gaming company has talked up a whole mess of upcoming stuff for the Switch like Splatoon, Mario Kart 8 and more.

Switching it up

Probably first on the mind of any Nintendo fan tuning into this last Direct, the Nintendo Switch’s library needed a nice update. For the most part, that’s just what it got, though some of the stuff talked about was honestly a little iffy.

Nintendo ran through the Switch titles that you already knew about like Arms, Mario Kart 8, and Splatoon 2. All of the above liked great, so those are some major plusses. They also showed off a load more though, like a definitive edition of Rayman Legends, Disgaea 5, both Sonic titles, and a big surprise with Payday 2. Yes, Payday 2. Yes, that came out on consoles in 2013. No, I don’t know either.

Anyway, there was a lot of good stuff is what I’m getting at. So go ahead and scroll down and have a peek at what’s officially coming to the Switch in 2017, and then check out the presentation in its entirety right here.

  • ARMS: One of the biggest features in the upcoming fighting game is the ability to equip two types of customizable ARMS per fighter. These ARMS range from standard gloved ARMS to curved weapons like boomerangs. Each ARM has a special attribute like fire, ice or electricity that activates when delivering a charge punch. As players fight through the game, they will earn in-game currency that can be used to play the ARM Getter, a fun mode in which they can get new ARMS for their fighters. The fast-paced game can be played in 1-v-1 matches or even 2-v-2* for more entertainingly chaotic battles. During the Nintendo Direct presentation, a new character was also revealed: the super-fast, ramen-armed Min Min. ARMSlaunches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on June 16. In addition, special Neon Yellow Joy-Con controllers and Joy-Con Straps will be released separately on the same day alongside a Joy-Con AA Battery Pack accessory.
  • Splatoon 2: Salmon Run, a new four-player co-op mode*, is coming to the Splatoon 2 game. By teaming up with friends, players can take a part-time job battling the new Salmonid species, which the Squid Research Lab reports might even be more lethal than the Octarians! When players fall in co-op mode, teammates can revive them by inking them on the battlefield. Splatoon 2 launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on July 21. In addition, three freshly designed individual amiibo figures for the game – a new Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy and Inkling Squid – will launch on the same day and grant special limited gear in game. By tapping these amiibo (as well as previously released Splatoon series amiibo), the figure’s character will appear in the game and befriend players. Befriend an amiibo character and it will remember favorite weapons, gear, outfits and option settings. This comes in handy when waging Turf War at a friend’s house.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: When the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game launches on April 28, it will do so with more characters, karts and tracks unlocked from the start than any other game in Mario Kart history. Both traditional racing and the newly redesigned battle modes can be played in Local Wireless mode with up to eight players, and in Online** or LAN mode with up to 12 players***. For fans who want to show off their driving skills, Nintendo will be hosting two Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online tournaments in game. More details about these tournaments will be revealed in the future.
  • Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers: Fans waiting to play this enhanced version of one of the most celebrated fighting games of all time won’t have to wait much longer! The Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers game launches for Nintendo Switch on May 26 and includes all of the classic characters and two new fighters: Evil Ryu and Violent Ken. Additionally, a “Way of the Hado” mode lets players throw HADOKENS with first-person motion controls, while an exciting two-player co-op mode* gives players and a friend one health bar for intense two player vs. CPU matches.
  • Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition: One of the most popular creation games of all time is coming to the Nintendo Switch console. The fan-favorite Super Mario Mash-Up pack along with new multiplayer play and control options will be included in Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition when it launches in Nintendo eShop on May 11 and in stores at a later date.
  • Two Sonics, Two Styles: Nintendo Switch is getting two new Sonic games in 2017. Sonic Forces is a modern 3D take on Sonic games and follows the blue hedgehog hero as he uses his stylish high-speed moves to bring down the nefarious Eggman. Sonic and a mysterious new ally will rise up when Sonic Forces launches for Nintendo Switch this winter. Sonic Mania launches this summer and features retro 2D graphics and a host of new stages, as well as some classic stages from previous games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
  • Project Mekuru (name not final): Players that like multiplayer action games are in for a treat when Project Mekuru launches exclusively in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch this summer. The frantic and fun game finds up to four players battling locally* or online** to flip panels and blow up opponents.
  • Disgaea 5 Complete: This tactical RPG franchise is beloved by many, and the definitive version of the fifth game, Disgaea 5 Complete, is coming to Nintendo Switch on May 23. Perfect for portable play, this epic RPG will launch with both standard and limited-edition versions. A free demo for the game will launch in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch soon.
  • NEOGEO Masterpieces: Starting April 13, more NEOGEO classic games like Samurai Showdown IV will be available to purchase in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch. Some future NEOGEO games coming to the system include Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters ’99.
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris: Two classic puzzle games face off in Puyo Puyo Tetris. The four-player* puzzle mashup game is only a little more than a week away, launching on Nintendo Switch on April 25. For people who want to try before they buy, a free demo for the game is now available.
  • Monopoly for Nintendo Switch: One of the most famous board games ever is coming to Nintendo Switch. Up to six players can experience the classic game with HD Rumble features and optional shorter sessions when Monopoly for Nintendo Switch launches this fall.
  • Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition: The gorgeous, award-winning platformer is coming to Nintendo Switch later this year. On Nintendo Switch, an exclusive Kung Foot experience offers a Solo Mode and tournaments for up to eight players*.
  • THQ Nordic Games: The diesel-punk shoot-’em-up game Sine Mora EX, co-developed by acclaimed studio Grasshopper Manufacture, launches on Nintendo Switch this summer with local co-op and versus* modes. Also coming to Nintendo Switch from THQ Nordic Games is Battle Chasers: Nightwar, an RPG inspired by console classics and based on the Battle Chasers comic book series. Battle Chasers: Nightwarlaunches with timed exclusivity on Nintendo Switch in late summer.
  • PAYDAY 2: In this four-player co-op game*, players band together to rise to the top of the criminal world for bigger jobs and better paydays. PAYDAY 2 launches for Nintendo Switch this winter.
  • NAMCO MUSEUM: Some of the most popular games of all time are coming to Nintendo Switch as part of the NAMCO MUSEUM package. Classic games, including PAC-MAN, GALAGA and SPLATTERHOUSE, as well as multiplayer gems like ROLLING THUNDER, SKYKID and TANK FORCE, can now be played at home or on the go. Players can stop and resume gameplay at any time, and Special Challenge Modes offer ways to test players’ skills. NAMCO MUSEUM launches for Nintendo Switch this summer.
  • Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star: Featuring playable characters from multiple Fate productions across three distinct narrative perspectives, Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star delivers the series’ most legendary showdown yet. The Nintendo Switch version will come loaded with 35 previously released paid DLC costumes, along with an exclusive new Unshackled Bride outfit. The high-octane action game will launch for Nintendo Switch in North America on July 25.
  • Nintendo Switch Standalone Dock: The Nintendo Switch standalone dock accessory will be available for purchase starting on May 19. Additional docks are perfect for traveling without having to unplug the main Nintendo Switch setup, as well as switching between TVs in the same house without transporting cords.

Want to hear about more games for your Nintendo Switch? Of course you do. Well the gaming giant has you covered with a Direct set for this Wednesday.

All about the games

Two of the biggest upcoming releases for the Switch will be the topic for this week’s Nintendo Direct. Set for March the 12th, the presentation will focus on both Splatoon 2 and Arms, two of the biggest titles coming to the platform in 2017.

Splatoon 2, of course, is a follow up to the original from the Wii U. An online, multiplayer affair mainly, Splatoon 2 is set to carry over the arena-shooter gameplay of the original, while tossing in a bunch of new hotness. As for Arms, it’s a boxing/fighting game really, but one that features an interesting mechanic.

The game’s characters have arms that are basically springs that you can ‘shoot’ out to tag the other player. It’s bright, colorful, and has the Nintendo feel in spades. It’s also another new IP for the company, much like Splatoon, and that’s a very good thing since it points to Nintendo not being content to simply recycle old properties for another generation.

So if you’re  Nintendo fan, then you’re going to want to tune in for this one, come this Wednesday. You can catch it right here, at 6pm eastern time.
