The three biggest ACC football questions of the week. Here we go for Week 2
Will Pittsburgh’s season take off with a win over UCF?
Miami, Louisville, SMU, and Virginia are getting all the discussion as the ACC’s top teams, but teams like Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech are waiting in the wings. Beat UCF and the Panthers should be able to get 4-0 before facing Virginia Tech. Mason Heintschel threw for over 450 yards against Miami (Ohio). UCF is an upgrade in competition, and a victory sets up a chance for Pitt to reel off some wins and get into the top 25.
What if Georgia Tech loses to Tennessee and falls to 0-2?
2 games in, and Georgia Tech’s season may be on the brink if they lose to Tennessee. Just to make a bowl, Georgia Tech will have to go 6-4, and that includes games with Georgia and Louisville. They would be losers of 6 of their last 7 games, and 3 straight home games. Georgia Tech may be able to recover from another loss, but I’d put the chances at less than 20%. I do think they will play better against Tennessee than Colorado; I’m not sure it will matter. We will see.
Will Syracuse or Duke become a darkhorse ACC contender this weekend?
If you are looking for a dark horse in the ACC. It could come out of a 2-0 start from Syracuse or Duke. Syracuse, coming off a 3-win season, could get to 2 – 0 with a win over a Cal team that collapsed late against UCLA. With Steve Angeli back and healthy at QB, the Orange could start to become a team to watch in the ACC. I like them against Cal. Duke has been exceeding expectations for years, and I wouldn’t bet against them under Manny Diaz, but Illinois on the road might be too tall a task.

Georgia Tech offensively looked as bad as they ever have in the Brent Key era against Colorado. With Tennessee next, 0-2 is staring Georgia Tech right in the face.

Wake Forest is favored at Purdue. If the Deacs win, they might be in for another suprise season.

Can Syracuse get 2-0 with a win over Cal?

Duke can catch folks’ attention if they can win at Illinois.

Why shouldn’t UNC be this high? They have the ACC’s best current win. They should get to 2-0 with ETSU this week.
6. Virginia Tech (1-0, 0-0)
Last Week: 7
Old Dominion has caused Virginia Tech problems in the past. I think this year will be different.
5. Pitt (1-0, 0-0)
Last Week: 6
Big chance for Pitt to get a P4 win over UCF this weekend.

Last Week: 4
It took a last-second FG by Ole Miss to beat Louisville as the Cardinals matched the Rebels point for point. Villanova should get Louisville in the win column.
3. SMU (1-0, 1-0)
Last Week: 3
SMU played sloppily at FSU, and still left with a win. UC-Davis shouldn’t be a problem.
2. Virginia (1-0, 1-0)
Last Week: 2
Virginia should easily move to 2-0 against Norfolk State.

Last Week: 1
Miami looked the part of a national title contender at Stanford. Florida A&M will allow about 100 Miami players to get in the game

The ACC’s P4 OOC results have been a total train wreck. Georgia Tech faceplanted in front of a sellout home crowd as a favorite to Colorado. Boston College was well Boston College against Cincinnati. Clemson looked massively overmatched in getting humiliated by LSU.
Louisville was the last ACC program that had the opportunity to salvage something OOC in week 1. They couldn’t pull the trick, but as opposed to the others, you didn’t leave with the feeling they were in trouble the way the others were.
The Cardinals stood toe to toe with an Ole Miss team that was a CFP semi-finalist and started possibly the best quarterback in college, Trinidad Chambliss. Ole Miss came into the game ranked in the top 10 and eyeing another playoff spot.
Where so many other ACC teams wilted at the line of scrimmage, Louisville did not. They had 162 yard on the ground, and while the defense gave up some big plays did come up 2 turnovers and held Ole Miss to 6 of 16 on third down. Look, Chambliss is going to carve up any defense in college football, and I think the Cards had a credible effort.
QB Lincoln Keinholz started a bit shaky, but he proved to be a true gamer and someone Louisville can win a lot of games with. Down 14 in the 4th quarter, he led Louisville back to even things up at 38. He threw for over 300 yards, and and nearly 70 yards on the ground.
The win would have been nice to have, but the rest of the schedule sets up very well for Louisville. SMU is at Louisville, but other than that isn’t another game Louisville won’t be favored in. A game at Kentucky provides another SMU chance. There isn’t any reason why Louisville shouldn’t be able to go 10-2 or 11-1 and have a shot at reaching the ACC Title game.
Losses are never good, and I’m sure Jeff Brohm doesn’t want to hear about moral victories, but the Cards proved something Sunday night. I think they’ll be in the thick of the ACC title chase all year.

While in some circles Saturday’s LSU 51-10 thrashing of Clemson was noteworthy, the reality is it shouldn’t be. I’m not taking anything away from LSU. It was a wonderful performance, and they dominated from start to finish. This is more about Clemson. They are just another program. This was a 7 – 6 team that finished 7th in the ACC. Most pre-season predictions didn’t have them among the top 4 ACC teams.
Clemson is a middle of the road at best team in the ACC. If LSU had done this to Boston College, would it have barely been news? Clemson is a brand name, but so is Nebraska. If Ohio State beats Nebraska this year, is anyone going to notice?
At some point, you are who you are, and Clemson is just there. Games at Death Valley don’t strike fear anymore. The personnel has talent here and there, but nobody really worries about it. Everything Dabo Swinney used to touch would turn to gold, but now he’s just a coach who talks about the good ole days.
For years, Clemson seemed to be just a move or two away from returning to some semblance of their former glory. Foundationally, things are so far gone; Clemson isn’t a coaching change, recruit, or portal pickup from success. It’s 2008 when Tommy Bowden was fired, possibly 1998 when Clemson went 3-9. At the very least, it’s 2010 when Dabo Swinney overhauled the program.
Clemson is in a spot where so many things need to be fixed that you don’t even know where to begin, and I think Dabo Swinney doesn’t know either.
When our ACC Power Rankings come out this week, there will be at least a dozen ACC teams above Clemson, maybe more. At the moment, this isn’t even an upper-half ACC team, much less anything resembling championship caliber.

This is normally an ACC blog, but something happened today in Ann Arbor, Michigan, so disgusting, so wrong that it can’t be justified. Western Michigan had a win over Michigan stolen from them – absolutly stolen. College Football already has rules that can’t be enforced. Violations run rampant. Nobody can stop it. Congress can’t fix it. Rivalries and conferences die for the sake of money, but the game itself is what we had.
I don’t think we have that anymore. Western Michigan beat Michigan 12-7. The clock read 0, but officials put another second on the clock, and Michigan won with a Hail Mary pass. That’s not a great moment. At best it’s gross mismanagement of a game; at worst it’s corruption at the highest level. Whatever it is, when you can’t trust the win-loss records of the teams, you don’t have a sport. You have a game show.
The Western Michigan football program deserves better.
It wasn’t particularly close. The ball was still in the air when the clock hit 0:00.

Crazy, huh? North Carolina gets a decent win over TCU – and can’t stay out of the press. From WRAL:
University of North Carolina football general manager Michael Lombardi, the highest-paid general manager in college football, resigned Thursday after a tumultuous tenure in Chapel Hill working alongside Bill Belichick, the university said.
But the investigation is still ongoing, and lawyers hired by the university are now focused on behaviors by defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, people familiar with the investigation tell WRAL.

Lawyers hired to conduct the investigation are also questioning people about whether defensive coordinator Steve Belichick used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player — and, separately, about whether a member of UNC’s recruiting staff had a sexual relationship with a player, people familiar with the investigation told WRAL. The lawyers also asked about possible sexual relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff, the people said.

Let’s get right to it – this was a bad loss by Boston College to Cincinnati.
I do not expect Boston College to get to a bowl game this year – and it’s quite possible that Boston College can be a deplorable anchor weighing down any Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football or men’s basketball team – who wants to get to the post season. As an ACC team, if you’re on the fence in getting to the national college football playoff – or the men’s NCAA division 1 basketball tournament – you can’t be risk of playing Boston College and having them drag your computer numbers down.
I can see other ACC teams ask for Boston College not to be on their schedule – if they think they have a chance for the college football playoff or the ncaa tournament.
There might be a point where the ACC needs to step in – and force Boston College to spend more money on athletics – convince them that they can’t be a weight on the league.
