A 26-year-old inmate has been sentenced to an additional 18 months in prison after escaping from lawful custody at Hurungwe Prison.

Patrick Chiziri, of Muzari Farm in Mutorashanga, was serving a 12-month jail term for unlawful entry when he escaped on October 11, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said.

Chiziri had been assigned to work at Langham cattle kraal when he fled the area.

“He was deployed to work at Langham cattle kraal. While at the kraal, he escaped and fled the area,” the NPAZ said.

The authority said prison officials received a tip-off from an anonymous caller at around 8am that an inmate had been spotted in the Karuru area.

A search team was subsequently dispatched from Hurungwe Prison at around 9am to track him down.

Chiziri was recaptured at approximately 1pm on the same day along the Harare–Chirundu Road, near Moy Farm in Karoi.

He was later brought before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court where he was convicted of escaping from lawful custody and sentenced to an additional 18 months in prison.

The fraud trial of Westridge Primary School headmaster Thakorbhai Kanjee and his wife, Jaya, has been postponed to November 9 for a ruling on their application for discharge.

Harare magistrate Artwell Sanyatwe postponed the matter to 2:15pm saying the court needed ample time to consider the application.

Kanjee (73) and his wife, Jaya (71) are accused of fraudulently increasing their shareholding in family-owned property company T and J Investments (Pvt) Ltd without the knowledge or consent of fellow director Neeshta Urmila Patel.

The couple is seeking discharge, a legal application asking the court to acquit them without requiring them to present a defence.

The State, represented by Lawrence Gangarahwe alleges that the accused acted in common purpose to defraud Patel and prejudice the proper administration of the company.

During the trial, Patel told the court that she inherited her late father’s 20-share stake in the company in 2015.

She testified that in August 2024, her uncle and aunt approached her with a proposal to redistribute the company’s shares equally, but she refused to sign the resolution.

Patel said she later discovered that a Return of Allotments, known as a CR 11 form, had been filed with the Registrar of Companies, indicating that the accused had each allotted themselves an additional 10 shares.

The State alleges that on August 16, 2024, the couple submitted a forged resolution to the Registrar, falsely claiming that all directors had approved changes to the company’s shareholding structure.

The alleged misrepresentation resulted in the Registrar processing the changes, granting each accused an additional 10 shares without Patel’s knowledge or consent.

Patel further told the court that she was denied access to company records at the Registrar’s office, prompting her to report the matter to the police.

The complaint led to the couple’s arrest in July.

The court is expected to deliver its ruling on the application for discharge on November 9.

An Epworth woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for murdering her partner by strangling him with his jacket hood during a domestic dispute over food.

Charlotte Choto (39) was convicted of murder with constructive intent in aggravating circumstances by High Court judge Justice Catherine Bachi Mzawazi who dismissed her claim that she had acted in self-defence.

The court heard that the incident occurred on December 27 last year when Choto’s partner, Jehu Rubaba returned home drunk and demanded to be served sadza after finding his family eating rice and chicken.

The demand sparked an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation in the couple’s bedroom.

Choto strangled Rubaba using the hood of his jacket and continued assaulting him after he had collapsed, the court heard.

In passing sentence, Justice Mzawazi said the continued strangulation and further attacks on a helpless victim aggravated the offence.

The judge acknowledged that Choto was a first-time offender and had expressed remorse but said the seriousness of the crime warranted a lengthy prison term.

Choto will now serve 20 years behind bars for the killing.

A Harare man has appeared in court facing fraud allegations after allegedly duping a South African-registered company of US$5 700 in a botched foreign currency exchange deal.

Anwell Mhashu of Westgate, Harare allegedly misrepresented that he had a consignment he wanted to pay for in South Africa before asking the company to make a payment on his behalf.

According to court papers, the complainant, Vanisco Investments, represented by its director Darrel Tapiwanashe Kabade, was approached by Mhashu on October 8, 2026.

The court heard that Mhashu allegedly asked the company to deposit R93 800 into an ABSA Bank account, promising to give it the equivalent amount in United States dollars.

Believing that Mhashu was a genuine businessman, the company agreed to facilitate the transaction.

On October 9, 2026, at around 10.15am Vanisco Investments transferred R93 800 from its First National Bank account into the specified ABSA Bank account.

However, Mhashu allegedly failed to pay the promised United States dollars and instead began giving excuses when the complainant sought to recover its money.

Further inquiries reportedly revealed that Mhashu did not have the consignment he had claimed to be paying for in South Africa and allegedly did not have the equivalent amount in United States dollars.

The company subsequently reported the matter to the police.

The alleged offence resulted in a prejudice of R93 800 equivalent to approximately US$5 700 with nothing recovered.

Mhashu was granted US$100 bail and ordered to reside at his given address.

He was also ordered to report once a week, every Friday, at Harare Central Police Station’s Commercial Crime Department as part of his bail conditions.

A 31-year-old man from Seke, Chitungwiza, has been sentenced to an effective four years in prison for stealing a Toyota Vanguard valued at US$10,000 in Harare.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said Nyasha Maruva was convicted by the Harare Magistrates’ Court for stealing a motor vehicle belonging to Michael Nyarugwe.

According to the NPAZ, the incident occurred after Nyarugwe left his vehicle in the custody of his mechanic at a garage in Marlborough, Harare, in July 2026.

“The offender befriended the garage’s security guard and stole the keys to the pearl Toyota Vanguard, registration number AEL 4057,” said NPAZ.

On August 24, 2026, at around 5.20am, Maruva allegedly returned to the garage and stole the vehicle.

“The victim was later informed by his mechanic that the vehicle was missing, prompting him to report the matter to the police,” said NPAZ.

The authority said detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad Harare Crack Team received information on October 14, 2026, that Maruva was allegedly attempting to sell the stolen vehicle.

“ The detectives posed as potential buyers, lured the offender into a meeting and arrested him,” the NPAZ said.

The vehicle was recovered, although its registration plates, ZINARA disc, radio licence disc and insurance disc were missing.

The stolen property was valued at US$10,000, with property worth US$9,300 recovered.

Maruva was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

Eight months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, while a further four months were suspended on condition that he restitutes US$700 to the victim by October 30, 2026, bringing his effective sentence to four years.

Another police officer stationed at Borrowdale Police Station has appeared in court facing robbery and criminal abuse of duty charges over allegations that he and other officers forced a Chinese businessman to pay money following a failed chrome deal.

Yesterday acting officer in charge at the station Farai Gwamure (51) appeared at the court facing charges of extortion, criminal abuse of duty as a public officer and defeating or obstructing the course of justice

Phibion Musadha(45) is accused of acting alongside other police officers and a woman identified as Nina Zheng, who is still at large, to obtain money from Feng Lin (38) following a dispute over a chrome transportation deal.

According to the State, Lin had entered into an agreement with Zheng to transport chrome from Zimbabwe to Mozambique, but the deal collapsed after the chrome was offloaded in Mutare instead of Mozambique.

The court heard that Zheng subsequently demanded a refund of US$13 050 from Lin and allegedly enlisted Musadha and other police officers to force him to pay.

On October 13, the group allegedly went to Lin’s home in Borrowdale armed with a Mossberg rifle and demanded immediate payment, threatening him when he failed to open the gate.

The State alleges that Lin initially arranged for his driver to deliver US$3 000 to Zheng at a service station in Pomona.

He later transferred another US$7 500 into Zheng’s bank account, bringing the total paid to US$10 500.

Despite the payments, Musadha and two alleged accomplices, Palmer Hotera and Takuranashe Magomba, allegedly jumped over the property’s precast wall while armed with the rifle.

They are accused of assaulting the gardener, forcing their way into the house and finding Lin in his bedroom, where they allegedly handcuffed and assaulted him while demanding the outstanding US$2 500.

The court further heard that the group allegedly demanded an additional US$1 000 from Lin, threatening to hand him over to immigration authorities for deportation if he failed to pay.

Lin reportedly showed the group the US$1 000 he had remaining, which was allegedly taken by Hotera before the group left.

The State alleges that the accused acted in common purpose with Zheng and others to unlawfully obtain money from the complainant.

According to court papers, the value of the property allegedly stolen was put at US$11 500 while US$1 000 was recovered.

The matter was scheduled stood down for November 4.

A 23-year-old man has appeared before a Harare magistrate facing hacking charges after allegedly gaining unauthorised access to MultiChoice DStv Zimbabwe channels and selling access codes for US$20 each.

Boston Meldric Mushonga, who is employed as the chief operations officer at Fabsa Bee (Pvt) Ltd, is accused of unlawfully accessing DStv channels through the ElephTV website and application between June 2026 and October 20, 2026.

According to court papers, Mushonga allegedly obtained access codes that enabled users to watch more than 400 DStv channels, which he then offered for sale to other people.

The court heard that a MultiChoice DStv Zimbabwe representative, posing as an interested customer, obtained Mushonga’s mobile number and requested an access code.

The State alleges that Mushonga supplied the code after receiving a US$20 payment through his EcoCash number.

Detectives later traced Mushonga to Gweru’s central business district, where he was arrested.

A Zimbabwe Republic Police inspector has been arraigned before the Harare Magistrates court accused of obstructing an investigation into an alleged armed robbery involving a Chinese businessman and attempting to prevent him from pursuing his complaint.

Farai Gwamure (51) who is identified in court papers as the acting officer in charge of Borrowdale Police Station in Harare, was arrested on October 19

He faces charges of extortion, criminal abuse of duty as a public officer and defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

The allegations stem from a business dispute involving Feng Lin, a 38-year-old Chinese national living in Borrowdale West who had reportedly entered into an agreement with Nina Zheng to transport chrome from Zimbabwe to Mozambique.

The arrangement allegedly collapsed after Zheng offloaded the chrome in Mutare instead of Mozambique and demanded a refund of US$13 050.

Court papers allege that on 13 October, Zheng and Gwamure’s alleged accomplices went to Lin’s home armed with a Mossberg shotgun and demanded money.

They allegedly threatened and assaulted Lin, handcuffed him and searched his home before forcing him to transfer US$13 050 into Zheng’s bank account.

After the incident, Lin reportedly lodged a complaint at Borrowdale Police Station where the case was assigned for investigation.

However, prosecutors allege that Gwamure attempted to prevent the complaint from being formally recorded and investigated.

Court papers state that the inspector initially turned Lin away promising to contact him later before summoning him to his office and handing him US$1 000 after taking US$900 from his pocket.

The court papers further allege that after the complaint was eventually recorded on 15 October, Gwamure conspired with another accused person to falsify an entry in the station’s Reports Received Book to conceal evidence relating to the case.

Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa granted Gwamure US$200 bail and will return to court on November 4 pending finalisation of the investigations.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested two suspected robbers following a shootout in Bulawayo that left their alleged accomplice dead.

Austin Nkomazana (23) and Nkosikhona Ndlovu (23) were arrested during the operation in Norwood while their alleged accomplice, Average Ndlovu also 23 known as SaAaron, died after being shot, police said.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects were being investigated in connection with five robbery cases reported in Umguza on 18 and 19 October.

In one of the incidents, which allegedly occurred at about 03:45 on 19 October, the suspects attacked a woman and her three children at their home while armed with machetes, axes and knives.

“They allegedly stole US$2,000 in cash and valuables worth US$2,460,” Nyathi said.

In a separate incident at about 01:44 on the same day, the suspects allegedly broke into a man’s house and stole US$300 and other valuables before fleeing in his Honda Fit vehicle.

“The vehicle was later abandoned after being involved in a road accident,” Nyathi said.

Police officers, assisted by a canine unit, later tracked the suspects to a bushy area near Plot 30 in Norwood.

Nyathi said the suspects allegedly attempted to attack and disarm the officers during the operation.

“The officers fired warning shots, but the suspects continued advancing towards them, prompting the police to open fire,” he said.

Average Ndlovu sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead on admission.

The other two suspects were subsequently arrested.

Police warned criminal gangs and individuals involved in violent offences that attacks on officers carrying out their duties would not be tolerated.

“Any attempt to attack police officers will be met with a lawful and proportionate response in accordance with the law,” Nyathi said.
