Robyn, I did not know about Jeff, I’m so sorry. Thank you for sharing how the bike connecgted you both, as well as your own return to riding.

Almost 2 weeks ago, I rode our local BikeMS. The short route, but still the whole ride, despite getting a flat 3 miles out. I rode it on the bicycle that Jeff gave me for BikeMS back in 2008, as a ‘Let’s go steady and ride nice bikes together’ present [yes at 49 and 55, ‘go steady’ was the phrase he used]. I only cried on and off this year. We started riding a tandem in 2009, and did BikeMS every year on our tandem, even getting married during BikeMS 2013, at the century rest stop. Anyway. This was our thing, riding together. Until the fall of 2023, when he got too sick with the leukemia. We stopped riding together, and i barely rode to work because I was on call. He wasted away over the next 18 months, and i could not ride. I’d get on the bike and cry, or i’d end up walking it, in the throes of panic attacks. It has been almost 2 years since Jeff died, and i started riding again, on the bicycle he gave me. It is a sweet, fast, featherweight road bike. It has taken almost two years to be able to ride, and enjoy it, at least a bit. Our tandems gather dust in the bikeshop living room. His racing bikes gather dust. I suppose at some point I’ll sell them, they deserve to be ridden. It is a long, slow process, the recovering of self, and allowing yourself to feel pleasure alone in something that was shared. Two miles forward, one mile back, i guess.
