The summer holidays can feel long if you’re trying to budget and keep the kids entertained. We’ve pulled together a list of the top things to do in Bedfordshire either for free or for a low cost.

  1. Bedfordshire has some amazing free entry museums. In Bedford there’s three The Higgins, Bedford, The John Bunyan Museum and The Panacea Museum. In Luton there’s Stockwood Discovery Centre and Wardown House, plus Moot Hall in Elstow and Ridgemont Station Heritage Centre are always worth a visit! Many of these museums do free activities, trails and crafts for kids, so it’s worth joining their mailing lists to keep up to date for rainy day (or very sunny day!) activities.
  2. Discover the Woodland Fairy Trail at Bromham Mill, and the Ben and Bella Story Trails in Bedford Park, Russell Park and Mowsbury Park. For under a tenner, you can download a Treasure Trail for a few different areas of Bedfordshire, or find one at your holiday destination. Older kids will love the Talking Statues Tour or enjoy Geocaching too.
  3. There are free Splash Parks in Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard to cool down on hot summer days.
  4. Bedford Borough Council and Central Bedfordshire Council have some amazing Family Hubs offering activities and welcoming spaces for young people of all ages. Bedford Borough and Central Bedford Libraries are also a great way to spend the day and host regular and one-off activities throughout the holidays.
  5. If that doesn’t fill up your summer, Hoo Hill Maze in Shefford offers an amazing real maze at a low entry price , with a lovely picnic site too. Full House Theatre are hosting free outdoor shows in Ampthill and Houghton Regis over the holidays, and The Longholme Café have half price groupon vouchers for their Dragon boat hire and Landmark Golf in Russell Park.
  6. BCU members can access extra discounts and vouchers with OnePerks. Current offers include Sea Life, Legoland, Haven Holiday and National Trust.

And remember, Central Bedfordshire Council offer a Young Person’s bus card so kids can travel for just £1. And there’s plenty of places where kids eat for free or just £1, including Brewpoint, who are offering two free kids meals per adult meal purchased over the holidays.

Follow BCU on Facebook or Instagram for weekly updates on free things to do in Bedfordshire every weekend! Updates come out on a Thursday giving you plenty of time to plan.

Bedford Credit Union is excited to announce its transition to become Bedfordshire Credit Union is complete.

Bedfordshire Credit Union is a not-for-profit community bank owned by its members offering simple, straightforward banking services. After expanding its area of common bond last year to reach new audiences across Bedfordshire, it has taken the next steps to reflect this growth with a new, more inclusive and clearer name that preserves the core purpose and values of the credit union.

The change includes a new website, with a new logo and colour scheme that brings Bedfordshire Credit Union into the 21st century. The organisation has also recently launched a new app, making banking, saving and borrowing for the Bedfordshire community easier in the digital age, with help and support sessions scheduled for those who need help downloading and using the software, so that no one is left behind.

The new logo retains the much loved “nest-egg” emblem of the former branding, multiplied to represent not only the growth members can achieve with a credit union, but also the four important factors of BCU;

  • Pink represents community, inclusivity and the diversity of Bedfordshire
  • Green represents money, financial inclusion and BCU’s Saving and Loan products and services
  • Blue represents trust and the responsibility BCU has to its members and a commitment to ethical banking
  • Orange represents its hard-working volunteers, BCU’s not-for-profit status as well as its warm, welcome-to-all policy.

Bedfordshire Credit Union Community Engagement Officer Katrina says: “Over the past 18 months BCU has reflected on its space in the Bedfordshire community and is working hard to maintain relevance in the modern world. This rebrand helps us to communicate our reach throughout Bedfordshire, but also, with our new website and app, helps those facing digital and financial exclusion to access secure savings and affordable credit in an increasingly digital world.”

Anyone who lives or works in Bedfordshire can become a member and start saving for just £5 a year. Members enjoy access to fair, affordable credit, free Young Savers account, a PrizeSaver account and exclusive discounts and offers on a number of national brands such as Legoland, Thorpe Park and Alton Towers, and a variety of shops such as Asda, Tesco and Morrisons. Members are also eligible for half-price membership to the Share Bedford Library of Things.

For many, it feels like being trapped in a nightmare with no way out.

The post Guest Blog post: Stop Loan Sharks support is always on your terms appeared first on Bedfordshire Credit Union.

]]>
Vulnerable borrowers, who may already be struggling, can find themselves spiralling deeper – borrowing more to stay afloat and sinking further under the control of the loan shark exploiting them.

One borrower summed this up in heartbreaking terms, when asked by a support worker where he saw himself on the path to recovery. The support worker said: “I once put to him ‘if you are in a hole and I’ve got a ladder and you had to climb out, where would you see yourself on that ladder?’  His comment was ‘I can’t even see the ladder’.”

This level of hopelessness is not uncommon among borrowers who have been targeted by loan sharks. Illegal lenders thrive on fear and silence.

They don’t just lend money – they trap people in a cycle of intimidation and psychological control, leaving victims too afraid or ashamed to ask for help.

But help is out there.

When someone first hears about Stop Loan Sharks – whether through a poster, a conversation with a support worker, or word of mouth – it can feel like a glimmer of light.

And yet, taking that first step toward getting support can still feel overwhelming. Borrowers may fear the consequences or blame themselves for getting into this situation. They may worry they won’t be believed, or that things will only get worse if they speak up.

The Stop Loan Sharks team members understand this, and they want to make sure people realise they are not alone and there is a way out.

Why reaching out matters

The latest figures from Stop Loan Sharks show that it can take someone up to four years to seek help.

In 2024, nearly half (49%) of people who reached out also reported mental health struggles – the highest level recorded to date. That indicates the emotional damage caused by illegal money lending.

Taking that first step might be scary, but it can also be the turning point. It’s the start of a journey back to freedom – financially, emotionally, and mentally – and the sooner that step is taken, the better.

What happens when you contact Stop Loan Sharks?

Stop Loan Sharks officers are a team of professionals, trained to offer confidential, compassionate support tailored to the differing needs of borrowers. They also have the powers to investigate and ultimately prosecute loan sharks.

When someone calls the 24/7 helpline (0300 555 2222), a real person will answer the phone. You won’t find a call centre or a recorded message, just someone ready to listen and help in any way they can.

  • You may decide you’re not ready to act yet and that’s fine. You can call for advice, think things over, and reach out again when you’re ready. You can talk to us anonymously if you prefer. We understand you may be worried or scared.
  • You may prefer to use Live Chat or WhatsApp messaging rather than speak on the phone and that’s also fine, those options are available. You can also email or text. Stop Loan Sharks officers are also happy to meet and chat in person about your options and the support available.
  • You may want to report a loan shark, but you’re worried about what will happen. The Stop Loan Sharks officer will simply take as much detail as you can give and begin a discreet investigation. Your call will always be treated in complete confidence.
  • You may need more immediate support with debt or another issue. The officer can connect you with the right organisations that specialise in financial advice and emotional support. You are then free to contact Stop Loan Sharks again when you feel ready to take the next step.

There’s never any pressure or judgement. Just support delivered at your pace.

You’re not alone – We’re here whenever you’re ready

Living under the control of a loan shark is not your only option. There is a way out, and it starts with reaching out.

These are real words from borrowers who took that brave first step and contacted Stop Loan Sharks for help:

  • “It feels like a massive weight has been lifted.”
  • “You just understand and haven’t been judgemental.”
  • “After reporting you came back really quickly which put my mind at rest.”
  • “The person on the hotline created an immediate bond with me. I feel so much better.”

If you’re not sure that your lender is a loan shark, there are a few red flags to look out for.

  • They may not give you any paperwork or agreement about the loan
  • They may keep items until the debt is paid such as your bank card or passport
  • They are likely to add interest or charges so the amount you owe never seems to decrease
  • They may use intimidation or violence if you don’t pay

If you or someone you know is affected by illegal money lending, please don’t wait. Contact Stop Loan Sharks today.

We’re here, whenever you’re ready.

Bedford Credit Union are here with some tips to help you get started.

  • Consolidate your debt. If you have debt over multiple cards and companies, consolidating into one monthly payment may make repaying your debt easier to manage. Check our online Loan calculator to see if our interest rates can help you manage your debt.
  • Check your overdraft. With banks charging as much as 40% for planned and unplanned overdraft fees, taking a loan out with BCU may mean you pay less in interest each month than in fees, which can help you clear your overdraft. Check what you’re paying and compare it with our interest rates to see if we can help.
  • Open your bank statements. You may think you know your outgoings like the back of your hand, but many people fall into the auto-renewal trap and end up paying for subscriptions they don’t need. If you take a free trial, set your calendar to remind you to cancel in time, and regularly review your payments to make sure you’re not spending unnecessarily.
  • Budget your spending. Use an online tool to work out your monthly spending and check and update it regularly. Try Money Helpers free budget planner
  • Join Bedford Credit Union. For simple and straightforward savings and loans, with no clutter or upselling. Check your savings balance or loan repayments any time via our online portal or app or call to make an appointment to speak to a real person at our Bedford office.

For the month of January, make a commitment to buy nothing new, other than essentials like food and medicines.

The post Buy Nothing New Month 2026 appeared first on Bedfordshire Credit Union.

    ]]>
Here at Bedford Credit Union, we are all onboard for saving money where we can, so we’ve put together some top tips to help buy nothing new this month.

    1. If you need a tent for a holiday, a pet carrier for the trip to the vets or a popcorn maker for a party, join your local Library of Things to borrow items for a small fee. Share Bedford and Share: Flitwick and Ampthill are two local organisations, plus Bedford Credit Union members can get half-price membership with Share Bedford!
    2. If you have a broken appliance, a knackered toy, or need a hole repairing in a pair of jeans, take our item along to a Repair Cafe to be fixed. Bedford Repair CafeLeighton Buzzard Repair CafeShare:Flitwick and Ampthill run events across the county.
    3. We’re not suggesting you don’t buy any new food during January, but it’s a good time to check your food waste and see if you can make improvements. As well as apps such as Olio and Too Good to Go, you can donate food or pick up free or cheap food that’s being diverted from landfill from local organisations Impakt FoodSurplus Supplies and Flitwick Community Fridge.
    4. If you miss the buzz of a new outfit, check out your local press for Swishing events in your area, or organise one yourself with your friends and family.
    5. Reward yourself each time you actively make a decision not to purchase something new by stashing what you don’t spend in your Bedford Credit Union savings account. You can watch your savings build in our app, and don’t forget to save up to £200 in a PrizeSaver account for the chance to win £5000 every month!
