Ulrike Seeger was born in Stuttgart, where she spent most of her life and professional career as an art historian. After studying in Stuttgart, Florence, and Erlangen-Nuremberg, she focused on medieval and early modern architecture, including her habilitation on the Viennese residences of Prince Eugene of Savoy. She held academic and curatorial positions at several institutions, including Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg, and from 2012 she taught at the University of Stuttgart. Since 2016, she was closely involved with the Corpus der barocken Deckenmalerei in Deutschland, contributing numerous entries and scholarly insights.
She is author of several books and over sixty articles. Her publications include extensive monographs on the Viennese palaces of Prince Eugene of Savoy (Stadtpalais und Belvedere des Prinzen Eugen: Entstehung, Gestalt, Funktion und Bedeutung, 2004), and on the chateau of the Dukes of Württemberg in Ludwigsburg (Schloss Ludwigsburg und die Formierung eines reichsfürstlichen Gestaltungsanspruchs, 2020). Her work combined architectural, ceremonial, decorative, and iconographic analysis with great intellectual precision.
And it is through her writings that Ulrike Seeger will remain with us. Her name will continue to be associated not only with meticulously crafted, deeply knowledgeable art historical interpretations of numerous monuments, but also with the warmth, generosity, and kindness she extended to her colleagues – always ready to offer help, whether professional or personal.
We are grateful to have shared many beautiful moments with her and like to imagine her now among the painted heavens she so lovingly studied.

This year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724–1796), one of the most original artists and fresco painters of the second half of the 18th century in Central Europe.
On this occasion, the Olomouc Museum of Art has prepared an exhibition of Maulbertsch’s works from collections in the Czech Republic, alongside with those of his collaborators and fellow painters. Attention is also paid to Maulbertsch’s friend and colleague Felix Ivo Leicher (1726-1812) and Maulbertsch’s pupil and follower Josef Winterhalder Jr. (1743–1807). The exhibition is held in the premises of the castle in Kroměříž and also includes the Feudal / Liege Hall, where Maulbertsch created one of his chef-d’oeuvres, the Apotheosis of the Bishop of Olomouc, Leopold Friedrich of Egkh, in 1759.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue, which was prepared by the Olomouc Museum of Art in cooperation with the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno. The publication includes not only information about the exhibited objects, but also more extensive essays focusing on to the individual stages of Maulbertsch’s work in Moravia and Bohemia, which summarise and often significantly expand the knowledge of the painter’s work in the Czech lands and the existing understanding of the functioning of his workshop. By the end of 2024, the publication should also be available in English as an e-book.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition for the public and the presentation of the catalogue with the participation of its authors will take place on Friday 28 June 2024 at the castle in Kroměříž. The exhibition will be open until 29 September 2024.

Sofia Braga, Cyrillo Volkmar Machado (1748–1823). Um percurso artístico singular [Cyrillo Volkmar Machado (1748–1823). A unique artistic career], Lisboa (Caleidoscópio) 2023
Cyrillo Volkmar Machado (1748–1823) was one of the unique artistic personalities of the Portuguese 18th century. As well as being a painter, theoretician and art historian, his entrepreneurial nature led him to set up the first Academy of Drawing in Lisbon with a nude study, influencing all the artistic academies that followed, namely the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1836.
His main activity was painting ceilings and walls, and he stood out from other contemporary artists. He produced several cycles with allegorical themes for the wealthy bourgeoisie of Lisbon, for the House of the Great and for the Portuguese Royal House, showing that he was keeping up to date with the plastic languages in vogue and that were already taking place on the European scene.
This book aims to show the life and work of Cyrillo Volkmar Machado, focusing on ceiling and wall painting, painting on canvas and his involvement in ephemeral art projects. One of Cyrillo’s facets was his dedication to architecture, which is why his contribution to the cycle of artists’ conferences at the Ajuda Palace was also discussed.

This year’s meeting of the Research Group for Baroque Ceiling Painting in Central Europe (BCPCE) took place on 13–15 October 2023 in Bratislava. Our kind hostess was Mgr. & Mgr. Art. Barbara Hodásová, Ph.D., Head of the Institute of Art History, Art Research Centre od the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and deserves the warm thanks of all the participating colleagues for the excellently organized meeting.

On the first day of the meeting, a tour of ceiling paintings in Bratislava was on the programme. We had a unique opportunity to visit the representative premises of the President of the Slovak Republic, the Government of the Slovak Republic and the National Council of the Slovak Republic, which are not open to the public. We saw the Presidential Palace (former Grassalkovich’s Palace) and the Government Office of the Slovak Republic (former so-called Summer Archbishop’s Palace). The ceiling paintings in the chapels are preserved in these buildings. Especially the paintings in the chapel of the Archbishop’s Palace are an excellent example of the quadrature painting by Antonio Galli-Bibiena (1740, together with Josef Bernhard Krinner).

The highlight of the first day was undoubtedly the tour of the Renaissance loggia, preserved in the premises of Bratislava Castle. This unique monument is now the subject of research by Slovak colleagues. Their project At the castle and underneath was presented by Barbara Hodásová the following day at a meeting of the group held at the castle in Smolenice.

In Smolenice presented their current research projects also Martin Mádl together with Michaela Šeferisová Loudová (Baroque Ceiling Painting: Between Theory and Praxis) and Berthold Kreβ (Iconobase – a new concept for the iconographic cataloguing of ceiling paintings).

The afternoon program of the second day included a visit to the Červený Kamen Castle, where we saw the murals of Carpoforo Tencalla created in 1655. The paintings in the sala terrene, the chapel and the rooms of the piano nobile are probably the very first surviving individual works by this northern Italian painter. Tencalla, originally from Bissone, was recommended to the commissioner Nicholas IV. Pálffy, probably by the architect Filiberto Luchese, who was carrying out the conversion of the medieval fortress of Červený Kameň into a representative residence (villa in fortezza).

The last stop was the pilgrimage church in Šaštín. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, under the patronage of Archbishop Imrich Esterházy of Esztergom, was one of the most important pilgrimage places of the Habsburg Monarchy. Thanks to his care, between 1755 and 1757 the church was decorated with top-quality paintings, most notably the ceiling paintings of Jean Joseph Chamant, a continuation of the “Bibiena” style of quadratura painting, who was assisted by other important mid-18th century painters, Johann Lucas Kracker and Josef Ignaz Mildorfer.

We thank all the members and partners of the BCPCE group for their participation in the meeting, discussions and comments about the frescoes and under the frescoes and we look forward to other similar events.

The recent book by Pietro Delpero aims to reconstruct the biography and the professional activity of the painter Francesco Marchetti (1641–1698), born of a noble family in Trentino. He was a painter at the court of Prince-Bishop Sigismondo Alfonso Thun, but broadly appreciated by the nobility in Trentino, Veneto, Austria and Bohemia, in addition to being the portraitist of Papal Legates and Teutonic Knights.
Starting in Trentino, this book will retrace the roads that led the painter to pursue his artistic fortune in different regions of Central Europe, including the historic Tyrol, the Republic of Venice, the Church’s territories, Bavaria and the German Empire countries, from Austria and Silesia to Bohemia. Here, Count Wenzel Adalbert of Sternberk commissioned him to paint the ceilings of many rooms in the Troja Palace, an imposing structure north of Prague. As evidence of Marchetti’s success with his contemporaries, the book’s painting catalog presents 54 works painted in Italy and 45 in Bohemia, as well as previously unpublished frescoes and paintings on canvas, from which one gleans his background and training in the Venetian tradition.

The documentary appendix, which concludes the book, reports the close correspondence between the painter and his patrons. This presents two salient features of his personality: first, his awareness of exercising a decent and esteemed profession despite his noble origins and, second, his pride of representing Italian painting in the German lands.

Tales in Heaven: Ceiling painting in Lisbon’s palace architecture (18th and 19th centuries) is a work in progress. This aims to study the painted ceilings of Lisbon’s palace architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, a heritage of great artistic significance both from an aesthetic and from a conceptual perspective. The resulting body of knowledge will enable the identification of the most popular aesthetic trends and the artists who contributed to them, as well as the social, economic and political codes inherent to this art form. This project is being developed in the group “Lisbon Studies” of the Institute of Art History, School of Social Sciences and Humanities.
The latest research has brought new contributions to the study of ceiling painting, confirming the need for its valorization. However, the impact of these studies has yet to be felt within the scientific community and the social groups that experience this unique heritage. And this may be put down to an insufficient appreciation of this art form in Portugal and to the lack of comprehensive historical and artistic research aimed at promoting and publicizing its exceptional nature. What is worse, the absence of efficient preservation policies has led to a gradual disappearance of painted ceilings, due to abandonment and degradation, but also to their disfigurement – largely because of a real estate market that is often predatory.

The research on ceiling painting adopts a transdisciplinary perspective that involves architecture, decorative arts and different modes of life. Accordingly, an important means of promoting this research is the collaboration with the open-access project ‘Manor Houses in Portugal, Brazil and Goa’, which has become a prominent vehicle for the dissemination of knowledge about Portugal’s and the world’s cultural heritage. One of the present project’s main ambitions is to contribute to the internationalization of Portuguese ceiling painting and alert national scientific communities to the historical importance of this art, while raising awareness to the need to safeguard the unique artistic legacy still found in the city of Lisbon.

Until now, it has been possible to survey some cycles of ceiling painting in Lisbon`s palace architecture, Mafra included, named: Quintela and Cound of Farrobo Palace (paintings dated from 1786-87); Pombeiro Palace (paintings dated from 1788-89); Palace of Dukes of Lafões (paintings dated from 1791); Porto Covo Palace (paintings dated from 1793-1794), and National Palace of Mafra (paintings dated from 1796-1807). All the mentioned cycle of paintings were executed by Cyrillo Volkmar Machado (1748-1823).

Two important works of the Baroque painting in Moravia located in Mikulov (Nikolsburg) and in Kroměříž (Kremsier) are under restoration. The ceiling paintings depicting scenes from the St John the Baptist legend in the church of the Piarists in Mikulov were created by Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724–1796) around 1757.
These frescoes belong to the Maulbertsch´s oeuvre of the late 50s that is characterised by richness of colours, intense light effects and shape expressionism. The Birth of St John the Baptist over the music tribune and the next two painted fields on the vault of church nave are completely restored.

The team of restorers (Peter Stirber, Romana Balcarová, Markéta Pavlíková, Lenka Helfertová, Radomír Surma) works currently on the central scene presenting the Most Holy Trinity. This painting demonstrates the technique of ceiling painting called “Kalkmalerei in Fresco” in the sources of the period which uses strong lime layers providing a very special light effect for the final painting.

Due to the destruction of the secco parts of painting the expression of figures (especially in the centre of the scene – Jesus, the God Father) disappeared, and now the way of how to do final retouches is discussed; these demanding task will be carried out during May 2022.

In the chateaux Kroměříž, former residence of the bishop of Olomouc, painting decoration in the Assembly Hall (dining room) is conserved. The author of three monumental oil paintings on canvas fixed on the vault was Franz Adolph of Freenthal (1721–1771). They were executed in 1769–1772 for the Olomouc´ bishop Maximilian of Hamilton. Paintings were damaged by humidity, on several places the oil layer of paintings became loose. The restorer Monika Wolfová (Pastiglia – Renovation and Restoration of Monuments) works on the first painting made from 12 canvas pieces presenting the Wedding of Thetis and Three Graces. Freenthal´s paintings represent the alternative way how to decorate rooms and halls of aristocratic residences (named by a term “Quadro riportato”), because of their dimensions they have no known parallels in the Central European painting of 18th century.

Both trips took place within the frame of the project Ceiling Painting between Theory and Praxis (The Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno and the Studio of Wall Painting Restoration of the Faculty of Restoration, University of Pardubice), the second one was linked to lectures about the early modern painting and culture on the Department of Art History at the Masaryk University in Brno. During the guide through the Bishop´s residence in Kroměříž students could visit all spaces of the chateaux decorated with ceiling paintings (sala terrena – Paolo Pagani, libraries and chapel – Josef Stern, the Hall of Vassals – Franz Anton Maulbertsch), debated their themes and stylistic aspects and the historical context of their origin as well; in conclusion the general iconological concept of the representative halls of the chateaux was discussed.

The Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno and the Studio of Wall Painting Restoration of the Faculty of Restoration, University of Pardubice, are preparing an international scientific Conference devoted to the problems of art theory and practice in the field of wall and ceiling painting of the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. The Conference is organized within the frame of the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Research Group for Baroque Ceiling Painting in Central Europe (BCPCE), with the support of the Czech Academy of Sciences, program Strategy AV21: Cultural Heritage as Part of European and Global Discourse.
I Baroque Ceiling Painting Gets Social and Cultural | social status of the artist, functioning of a workshop, artistic apprenticeship, artist & client, reception of ceiling paintings
II Materiality of the Image | historical materials, techniques and technologies in early modern treatises and monumental paintings
III Norm & Form | formal aspects of ceiling paintings in context of the artistic practice, designs, process, perspective, decoration, projection, colorit, anatomy, models, compositions, etc.
The Conference is opened to art historians, restorers and historians of techniques focused on history of early modern monumental paintings. The proposals of the papers including the title, a short abstract (up to one page), and a short biogram of the author are welcome until April 31, 2022, to: loudova@phil.muni.cz, & madl@udu.cas.cz

This publication consists of essays by art historians from the Czech Republic and other countries (four contributors are members of the BCPCE). The volume is thematically focused on connoisseurship, collecting and iconography of early modern art. Chapters of the book are characterized by new findings and by innovative applications of novel methodological approaches resulting into innovative interpretations. The intention of the book is to honour 70th anniversary of professor Lubomír Slavíček, who as one of the leading Czech art historians, specializes – although by no means exclusively – on early modern art.
The book launches a newly established book series Maturandum, named after one of Alciati’s emblems expressing the advice that one should hurry in moderation – not too fast and not too slow. The idea it thus visualized as a flying arrow that is slowed down by an attached shell. This visualization serves as pictorial motto of the series. The main goals of the book series are to open an international platform for peer-reviewed monographs in English focused on early modern art in Central Europe. Maturandum is currently negotiating with Brepols publishing.

Maturandum book series is directed by the Centre for Early Modern Studies, one of the research centres of Department of Art History in Brno (Masaryk university). The Centre aims to create an environment that supports art historians focusing on early modern art as well as scholars from other related research areas and provide them with opportunities to meet and interact at various events organized by the Centre. The website of the Centre for Early Modern Studies regularly informs about important and interesting events and activities related to Renaissance and Baroque art and culture. Reports on current, as well as upcoming exhibitions and conferences, new books, interviews with acclaimed scholars and various other news related to art history present the most interesting events related to research of art and culture in the 16th, 17th and 18th century. Relevant specialists working on early modern studies are warmly welcome to participate in conferences, which are held biannually at the Department of Art History in Brno.
