From Attock, Punjab, a Pakistani software engineer is working on something that would be ambitious anywhere in the world i.e. building his own computer operating system.

Aamir Shahzad, also known online as ASAKPKE, is the founder of RoshanTech and the developer behind RoshanOS, a Linux-based operating system that aims to offer users a fast, secure, and powerful alternative to the platforms they commonly use.

What makes the story particularly interesting is not simply the technology itself, but where it is being developed and the ambition behind it. A project emerging from a city such as Attock is seeking a place within the much larger global open-source community.

In an interview, Shahzad spoke about RoshanOS, his experience in software development, the challenges of introducing Linux to users familiar with Windows, and his belief in open-source technology. His journey offers an encouraging example of how Pakistani developers can move beyond providing technology services and begin building products of their own.

Shahzad’s Inspiration to Build an Operating System

Shahzad’s journey into technology began with software development. A graduate of COMSATS University, Wah, he started his professional career as a web developer in Islamabad before establishing RoshanTech in 2011.

The company has worked in areas including web development, web applications, and open-source software development. RoshanOS represents a more ambitious step: developing a technology product rather than simply delivering software services to individual clients.

Building an operating system is no small undertaking. It requires technical development, testing, compatibility, security, user experience, documentation, and continued maintenance. It also requires convincing users to try something unfamiliar when established alternatives already dominate the market.

For Shahzad, however, the project grew from a simple idea: to develop his own computer operating system.

Creating an Alternative to Windows

Most personal computer users are familiar with Windows, while relatively few have experience with Linux-based operating systems. Shahzad identified this lack of awareness as one of the major challenges facing projects such as RoshanOS.

He noted that even some IT professionals continue to associate Linux primarily with terminal-based computing. Modern Linux distributions, however, can provide full graphical desktop environments and support many of the activities users expect from a conventional operating system.

RoshanOS seeks to make Linux more accessible while offering additional functionality. According to Shahzad, the project aims to provide support for both Windows and Android applications, combining the flexibility of Linux with features intended for everyday users.

The broader philosophy behind the project is equally important. Shahzad views Linux and open-source software through the principles of sharing, security, and developing powerful technological solutions.

This approach places RoshanOS within a much larger global open-source movement, while giving it a distinctly Pakistani point of origin.

From an Idea to a Product

Shahzad’s approach to entrepreneurship is relatively straightforward: understand a problem carefully, identify the gap, develop an initial solution or minimum viable product, take it to the market, and then continue improving it while delivering more value to customers.

That process is particularly relevant to technology entrepreneurs because developing a product is only the beginning. A successful product must also find users, communicate its value, respond to feedback, and develop a sustainable business model.

RoshanOS is therefore being developed not simply as a technical experiment but as a product with a market in mind. The project has a free core while also offering a professional version, giving it a commercial dimension alongside its open-source foundations.

Shahzad also plans to promote RoshanOS through social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, in an effort to introduce the operating system to a wider audience.

A Pakistani Project Enters the Global Linux Community

One of the most notable milestones in the RoshanOS journey has been its listing on DistroWatch, a well-known website followed by the Linux and open-source community.

For a project developed by a Pakistani entrepreneur, this represents more than a technical achievement. It provides international visibility and places RoshanOS within a global ecosystem of Linux distributions.

The significance of this milestone lies partly in its origin. A software project does not have to emerge from a major international technology centre to participate in a global technological community. A developer working from Attock can build a product, make it publicly available, and seek recognition within an international ecosystem.

Why Product Development Matters for Pakistan

Pakistan has developed a substantial pool of software engineers, developers, freelancers, and IT professionals. Much of the country’s international technology presence, however, has traditionally been associated with software development and services for clients elsewhere.

Those activities remain valuable. Yet building original products represents another form of technological participation.

A company that develops a product of its own is not simply selling technical expertise. It is attempting to create intellectual property, establish a user base, develop a brand, and compete within a global market.

RoshanOS is one example of that transition.

The project also illustrates why Pakistan’s technological potential should not be viewed only through the country’s largest cities. Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad understandably receive much of the attention, but technological experimentation can emerge from smaller urban centres as well.

Perhaps the most encouraging part of Shahzad’s story is the combination of local roots and global ambition. RoshanOS is being developed in Attock, but its intended audience extends far beyond Pakistan. Its presence on DistroWatch also places the project within a global open-source community.

The journey ahead will not be easy. RoshanOS must compete with established operating systems, build a wider user community, and demonstrate its value to people who are already comfortable with Windows and other familiar platforms.

Yet the project represents something worth recognizing. From Attock, a Pakistani developer is not simply working for the global technology industry. He is attempting to build a product for it.

Indigenous EO-3 Satellite and Pakistan’s First-Ever Astronaut Mission in 2026

Pakistan has reached a defining moment in its scientific journey. With the successful launch of EO-3, the nation’s third consecutive indigenous Electro-Optical satellite, and the selection of Khurram Daud and Muhammad Zeeshan Ali as Pakistan’s first official astronauts, the country has simultaneously mastered Earth observation from orbit and committed to placing its own citizens among the stars. These twin achievements, born from decades of quiet perseverance and a landmark partnership with China’s Manned Space Agency (CMSA), signal that Pakistan is no longer a spectator in the global space arena.

The EO-3 Milestone: 3rd Pakistani Indigenous Satellite

The EO-3 satellite represents the maturation of Pakistan’s indigenous satellite manufacturing capabilities. As the third consecutive Electro-Optical platform developed and launched by SUPARCO, it builds upon the foundations laid by its predecessors while delivering significantly enhanced resolution, wider spectral coverage, and faster data turnaround. Where earlier missions proved Pakistan could design, assemble, and operate satellites, EO-3 demonstrates that the nation can do so repeatedly and reliably — a threshold that separates experimental programs from sustainable space infrastructure.

The practical implications are immediate and far-reaching. EO-3’s high-resolution imagery will sharpen agricultural monitoring across Pakistan’s diverse cropping zones, enable faster response to natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes, support urban planners managing rapid city expansion, and bolster national security through independent Earth observation. In a region where satellite data access has often depended on foreign providers, an indigenous eye in the sky is both a strategic asset and an economic enabler. It places Pakistan among a select group of nations, fewer than twenty worldwide, that can claim end-to-end satellite ownership, from design to operational deployment.

Khurram Daud & Muhammad Zeeshan Ali: Pakistan’s First Star Voyagers

While EO-3 extends Pakistan’s reach into orbit, Khurram Daud and Muhammad Zeeshan Ali are preparing to carry the nation into human spaceflight. Selected through a rigorous process that evaluated physical endurance, technical acumen, and psychological resilience, these two officers represent the culmination of a dream that has animated Pakistan’s scientific community for generations. Their training with CMSA will encompass spacecraft systems operation, extravehicular activity protocols, long-duration mission psychology, and Mandarin language proficiency — a comprehensive preparation for life aboard the Tiangong Space Station.

What distinguishes this mission beyond its technical dimensions is its symbolic weight. Daud and Ali do not train merely as individuals; they carry the aspirations of over 240 million Pakistanis. For a nation with one of the world’s youngest populations, the sight of Pakistani astronauts in space offers a powerful counter-narrative to stories of limitation and dependency. Their journey to Tiangong, facilitated by the deepening space cooperation between SUPARCO and CMSA, also represents a new model of international partnership — one built not on aid but on mutual capability and shared ambition.

What This Means for Pakistan’s Future ?

These milestones are not endpoints but launchpads. The EO-3 program establishes a replicable foundation for future satellites, weather platforms, communication relays, and eventually navigation capabilities, while generating high-skill employment in aerospace engineering, precision manufacturing, and data analytics. Simultaneously, the astronaut program creates institutional knowledge in human spaceflight operations that no textbook or consultancy can provide. Together, they position Pakistan to participate meaningfully in the rapidly commercializing global space economy, estimated to exceed one trillion dollars by 2040.

More profoundly, this dual achievement reshapes national identity. A country that can place its own satellites in orbit and train its own citizens for space station missions is a country that has crossed a threshold of scientific self-confidence. For students in Lahore laboratories, engineers in Karachi workshops, and researchers in Islamabad institutes, the message is unambiguous: the tools of space exploration are no longer beyond reach. The stars, once distant, now feel like the next frontier, and Pakistan is finally on its way to meet them.

On February 12, 2026, a Smart Dragon-3 rocket lifted off from the waters off China’s Yangjiang coast, carrying more than just another payload into orbit. Among seven satellites aboard was PRSC-EO2, Pakistan’s second fully indigenous Earth observation satellite, marking a watershed moment in the nation’s space capabilities and technological self-reliance.

Pakistan now joins an exclusive club of nations capable of designing, building, and operating sophisticated Earth observation satellites, a capability possessed by fewer than 15 countries globally. More importantly, it demonstrates that developing nations can achieve space technology sovereignty through focused investment in human capital and strategic international partnerships that emphasize knowledge transfer over dependency. Pakistan’s eyes in the sky became truly its own, designed by Pakistani minds, built by Pakistani hands, serving Pakistani needs.

From Concept to Orbit: A Homegrown Achievement

Unlike Pakistan’s earlier remote sensing satellites that were manufactured abroad, EO-2 represents something fundamentally different. It was conceived, engineered, and integrated entirely within Pakistan at SUPARCO’s Satellite Research and Development Centre (SRDC) in Lahore. Every circuit board, every line of code, every subsystem integration decision emerged from Pakistani laboratories and cleanrooms, a testament to years of focused investment in space engineering talent and infrastructure.

This achievement didn’t happen in isolation. Just thirteen months earlier, in January 2025, Pakistan had launched its first indigenous electro-optical satellite, EO-1, from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre. The remarkably short interval between these two sophisticated satellite developments signals a maturing space industrial base, one transitioning from experimental prototypes to operational satellite production.

Why Two Satellites? The Power of Constellation

EO-2 isn’t merely a duplicate of its predecessor. The satellite was specifically designed to operate in coordination with EO-1, creating Pakistan’s first indigenous Earth observation constellation. By observing the same locations under different illumination conditions, morning versus afternoon sun angles, the paired satellites dramatically improve:

  • Surface feature interpretation accuracy
  • Reliability of change detection (critical for monitoring deforestation, urban sprawl, or disaster impacts)
  • Imaging continuity regardless of cloud cover on a single pass
  • Overall analytical precision for national applications

This constellation approach transforms occasional snapshots into a continuous monitoring capability, essential for a nation facing climate vulnerabilities, rapid urbanization, and agricultural challenges.

Capabilities That Serve the Nation

Equipped with high-resolution electro-optical payloads, EO-2 delivers imagery that directly supports critical national priorities:

  • Climate Resilience: Monitoring glacial melt in northern regions, tracking monsoon patterns, and observing coastal erosion along Pakistan’s 1,000-kilometer coastline
  • Agricultural Security: Providing data for crop health assessment, irrigation planning, and yield forecasting across the Indus Basin, the agricultural heartland feeding 220 million people
  • Disaster Response: Enabling rapid damage assessment after floods, earthquakes, or landslides when ground access is impossible
  • Urban Intelligence: Supporting evidence-based planning for cities experiencing some of South Asia’s fastest growth rates
  • Resource Management: Monitoring water bodies, forests, and mineral resources with unprecedented frequency and detail

All this happens without dependency on foreign satellite tasking priorities or commercial data purchases, a strategic advantage for national security and sovereign decision-making.

The Human Infrastructure Behind the Hardware

Behind EO-2 stands a generation of Pakistani scientists, engineers, and technicians who have mastered the full satellite development lifecycle: systems engineering, payload integration, thermal-vacuum testing, vibration analysis, and mission operations. This human capital, trained through hands-on development rather than theoretical study alone, forms Pakistan’s most valuable space asset. Each satellite launch represents not just hardware in orbit, but dozens of engineers who now carry irreplaceable experience into future missions.

Looking Ahead

With two operational indigenous satellites now in sun-synchronous orbit, Pakistan’s Earth observation capabilities have fundamentally transformed. The data continuity, coverage improvement, and analytical precision promised by the EO-1/EO-2 constellation will gradually permeate national planning, from provincial agriculture departments to federal disaster management authorities. Future milestones already on the horizon include additional indigenous satellites and continued expansion of ground station infrastructure. But February 12, 2026, will be remembered not for political statements or ceremonial photo opportunities, but for what quietly happened in orbit. Pakistan’s eyes in the sky became truly its own, designed by Pakistani minds, built by Pakistani hands, serving Pakistani needs. That is the quiet revolution of EO-2.

Lahore, the historic capital of Punjab province in Pakistan, grapples with a significant environmental challenge – smog. This thick layer of air pollution, a combination of fog and smoke, blankets the city during winter months, posing severe health risks for residents. The provincial government, determined to tackle this issue, has recently announced a multi-pronged approach, which includes a potential collaboration with neighboring India.

Crossing Borders for Cleaner Air

The news of a possible cross-border agreement between Punjab and India to combat smog has sparked both interest and curiosity. While the specifics of the agreement haven’t been finalized, the idea signifies a willingness to explore joint solutions. Such collaboration could involve:

  • Sharing best practices: Both countries have experiences and policies to address air pollution. Sharing knowledge on effective measures, like pollution control technologies or emissions regulations, can benefit both sides.
  • Joint monitoring: Air pollution often transcends borders. By establishing a collaborative monitoring system, Punjab and India can gain a clearer understanding of regional pollution patterns and sources. This can lead to more targeted control measures.
  • Cross-border pollution control: Industrial facilities located near the border can significantly impact air quality on both sides. A joint agreement could ensure stricter regulations and enforcement mechanisms for these facilities.

While the potential benefits are evident, there are also challenges to consider. Political tensions between the two nations and logistical hurdles in implementing a cross-border agreement can’t be ignored. However, the urgency of addressing the smog crisis necessitates exploring avenues for cooperation.

Punjab’s Domestic Initiatives

The Punjab government is not solely relying on international collaboration. It has announced a series of domestic initiatives aimed at curbing air pollution within the province. Here’s a closer look at these measures:

Scrutinizing Polluting Factories

Industrial facilities are a major source of air pollution. The government plans to increase inspections and enforce stricter emission standards for factories. This can significantly reduce industrial pollutants like particulate matter and harmful gases.

Emission Control Systems in Industrial Zones

The government is mandating the installation of emission control systems in designated industrial zones. These systems capture and filter out pollutants before they are released into the atmosphere. This can lead to a substantial reduction in overall air pollution levels.

Promoting Mechanised Crop Harvesting

The traditional practice of crop burning after harvest is a significant contributor to smog. The government is encouraging farmers to adopt mechanized harvesting techniques. This eliminates the need for burning and reduces air pollution caused by agricultural practices.

Public Awareness Campaign

Spreading awareness about the causes and health impacts of smog is crucial for long-term solutions. The government’s plan to develop a mobile app for this purpose is a positive step. This app can inform citizens about air quality levels, preventive measures, and government initiatives.

Potential Benefits and Challenges

The success of these initiatives hinges on effective implementation and long-term commitment. If implemented successfully, these measures have the potential to significantly improve air quality in Punjab. Here’s a glimpse into the potential benefits:

  • Improved Public Health: Smog can cause respiratory problems, heart disease, and other health complications. By reducing air pollution, these initiatives can lead to a healthier population.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Combating smog contributes to a more sustainable environment. Cleaner air benefits not just human health but also the ecological balance of the region.
  • Economic Advantages: Improved air quality can attract tourism and investment, leading to economic growth for the province.

However, challenges also need to be addressed:

  • Enforcement: Effective implementation of stricter regulations and pollution control measures is crucial. A robust enforcement mechanism is necessary to ensure compliance from industries and individuals.
  • Funding: The implementation of these initiatives requires significant financial resources. The government will need to secure funding for new technologies, infrastructure upgrades, and public awareness campaigns.
  • Long-Term Commitment: Combating smog is a long-term battle. Sustained efforts and unwavering commitment from the government and the public are essential for lasting change.

Conclusion: A Collective Effort for Cleaner Air

The Punjab government’s multi-pronged approach, including the potential collaboration with India, demonstrates a proactive stance on tackling smog. The success of these initiatives relies on effective implementation, securing funding, and fostering long-term commitment. Public participation is also crucial. By adopting practices that reduce air pollution and supporting government initiatives, citizens can play a vital role in creating a cleaner and healthier environment for themselves and future generations. The battle against smog requires a collective effort, and with a combination of innovative solutions and unwavering commitment, Punjab can breathe easier.
