I like monoprinting because you only get one print (and maybe a ghost print with the remainder of the paint or ink on the gel plate. I also like the unpredictability of what you will get when you print. You can pick up remnants of other paints and prints that might still be on the plate — and this gives the print an otherworldly look that is always surprising. Also, if you don’t like your first or second or even third layer of paint or ink you can change it and sometimes the 4th or 5th layer will be your favourite.
Today it is bucketing down rain and I cannot go out as I am recovering from a bad cold that I caught at a wargaming event. I decided to get out my 5 inch by 7 inch gel plate and do some printing.
I’ve used acrylic paints (several different brands from cheap craft acrylics to more expensive heavy body acrylics), alcohol inks on a few of the backgrounds and a white gel pen and blue Sharpie to highlight certain areas. I also used metalic gold acrylic paint to highlight stripes, but sadly they don’t show up in all their beauty on the photographs. Plus, I am a terrible photographer. When I feel better I may try with my lightbox.
I enjoyed trying these techniques and I will be using them on cards, bookmarks, artist trading cards and in my art journal. As I make things with them I will post my creations here.
Even this ghost image is lovely. I was using some cool colours and autumnal colours because that’s the vibe I’m feeling right now. 
I love the last image in yellow and red. It’s a ghost image and is stunning. It looks like a faded medieval wall painting you might find in a church.
Doing the gel printing today was helpful as I didn’t feel well and needed to bring some colour in my life.

My first impressions on this little book are positive. They were relatively inexpensive and I’ve done my first piece in one.
This piece was done with an acrylic background, with flowers drawn with a Sharpie and coloured with Tombow Markers and an acrylic paint pen.
The pages held up well, and I am looking forward to seeing what else I can throw at it to see how the paper performs.
]]>Now that I have been doing it for several months I am going to keep at it for my regular artistic practice.
I painted the background with Distress Paints. I love the colours and how they are reactive to water, but also when they dry they are permanent. They are amongst my favourite paints. I layered up the background. I used an old text rubber stamps and Tim Holtz stencils in the background to add interest and texture.
The flowers were then drawn in, and painted with gesso. After that dried I coloured them with Distress Crayons by smearing them with my fingers and blending the colours with more gesso. It added a nice subtle dream like quality to the colour of the crayons. Distress Crayons are creamy like lipstick, and also water reactive. I love them.
I outlined the flowers in highlighted them in acrylic paint pens. I also drew the spiral border with them.
Last I printed out a quote on the computer, coloured with with Distress Crayons and adhered it to the page with Modge Podge. “Love is like wildflowers, it’s often found in the most unlikely places.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
This was a very relaxing make and it was very therapeutic.
