Humanity itself is creating wars. In fact, we are feeding the mechanism that leads to war, constantly.

This mechanism is very simple.

Any time you say; I am Russian or, I am American, I am Chinese,  I am Christian, I am Muslim, or I am this or I am that and so on…the root cause of war is manifest.

It starts right there.  In you.

With a thought.

With a thought that you take very seriously.

That you believe.

You really believe that there are others, who can be or are your opponents, or enemy.

You believe you must defend yourself against them.

You believe that “they” must be defeated.

It is these thoughts and beliefs that cause war.

Nothing else.

Instead?

You could recognize that you are human

That this beautiful planet is (y)our home

That Love is (y)our true longing, though you know not what it is

That Love can only fully flourish when all labels, all names, all beliefs are dropped

In every moment, not just once

The end of “other”

All as is, fully alive and present!

Do you see?

Words reveal how we think. We seem to constantly forget that words are just labels, which only suggest they point to something “real”.

Take “success” or “happiness” or “acknowledgement”, things which most people want to attain, but can you actually “get” them?

Language is very useful when you want to ask someone to buy apples at the grocery store, but just like any tool, it has severe limitations.

Ultimately words point to nothing “attainable” at all. When you deeply look into this, you will see how our use of language actually creates and maintains all kinds of illusions.

At the basis of our language is the first person perspective, the “I” who is going to “get” certain “things”.

Billions of people speak from this perspective every day, every hour or every minute.

What will they attain and when?

The reason we never feel fullfilled, is that this seeking is based on a dream, on an illusion.

Seeking feels exciting, but only arises from the assumption of separation. Ultimately it is painful.

The end of this dream could be called awakening.

Awakening is never attained by anyone, because it is the very seeing itself that there is nothing to attain, no “me” who has anything or is going to get anything.

Which could be called complete freedom.

No seeking or effort can bring about awakening, because awakening is the end of all your effort and seeking.

All personal or spiritual or religious effort to get something or get somewhere, falling away.

What remains is the happening of Life!

Paradoxically then, everything that we humans long for is recognized as already present.

Shining as everything, as everyone, as all.

As the tiny ant crawling over a leaf or as the majestic play of sky in shapes of blue and white.

As the nagging toothache or the pleasant taste of tea

As the song of the blackbird or the noise of heavy traffic.

As everything and nothing.

No need to get this.

Simply be.

As Love.

Now.

It can be used as a pointer to the wholeness of everything, all that already is, before our thinking starts to introduce difference and division.

Our mind (whatever that is) and our language are by definition duality based. When we introduce the word “me” then automatically an opposite seems to arise, which we call “not-me”, or “you” or “them”.

When we introduce the word “friend”, likewise it introduces an opposite; “not-friend” or “enemy”.

The problem is that we mistake words for being true whereas they are just labels.

When I call you my friend but someone else calls you their enemy, then what are you?

Words introduce the illusion that we “know” something and that what we know is “real”. All of that is very dangerous when words are taken for being truth.

In the daily news we are constantly informed via written and spoken words about what happens in the world. In the country we call the USA for instance, there are two opposing political parties and they seem to be very different. Apparently when you belong to one of them, you automatically shouldn’t accept the points of view of the other. But even when you belong to one of them, you will have factions within that party who seem to be more in the “centre” or more in the “extreme”.  When you look at any of those factions you will find people that disagree because they are white or black, or man or woman, or religious or non-religious. Then when religious their specific beliefs may be different again, and so on and so on. It is endless.

There is no end to division, because our thinking will always create new words, new labels, new differences. The belief in them being “true” is the mechanism that ultimately leads to conflict and war. The ones who think they are “right” feel they must defeat the ones who they deem to be “wrong”.

These labels, these words, these differences, these conflicts, ALL exist nowhere but in our mind, in our thinking. This is the grand illusion!

Actually and fully and deeply seeing this illusion is the beginning of awakening.

It is also the falling in Love again with all that is, with Life itself…

Isn’t it so that we tend to assume that our thoughts are essential to what we are or we consider them to be our innermost and precious “core”?  The language we use however already indicates a distinction when we say; “my thoughts”. Who is this “me” who says these thoughts are “mine”?

It is quite obvious that we are not actually our thoughts, since thoughts come and go and we do not experience that we “disappear” when that happens.  When you sit quietly for a few minutes with the strong intention to “not think”, you will see that you can’t even control your thoughts. At one point they appear anyway and then disappear. So what are you then?

In some traditions the word “witness consciousness” was introduced, which suggests that you are the witness to everything you think, feel or experience. This does however introduce a duality of the awareness and the object it is aware of.

One of the problems of language is that it introduces frames or boxes into which we try to squeeze reality and through which we look at reality or analyse reality. One of the limitations our language and our thinking introduces is the “noun”. A noun suggests an entity, a something or what we usually call; an object. This is how we humans tend to interpret the world; subject versus object. We assume that the subject is a something (me) and the object is another something (that).

What if our language and thinking in terms of “nouns” is misguided?

What if a “verb” is a much more accurate form to express what we are?

So instead of a “something” (witness consciousness) being aware of another “something”  (a thought, a feeling, etc.), there is no such thing, but rather what really is happening, is “being”, “experiencing”, “feeling”, itself?

For ages we have assumed that there must be something at the center of this activity, a “something”, a subject, which we call “me”, but when you look carefully into this, the latest insights from Neuroscience as well as your experience in fact, will show otherwise.

Isn’t it wonderful that what we are is not any “something”, but rather what we are is feeling, thinking, experiencing itself? In that the distinction between the experience and the experiencer falls away, it is one and the same. (“no-thing”)

This is what “non-duality” points to. To our human mind, which thinks in terms of separation and division between subjects/objects this is a complete paradox and can’t be understood.

For the “awaring” or the “being” that we are, it is completely natural.

Somehow when this is seen all of life becomes very simple and very profound at the same time. All of our humanness, our whole human experience is included in it…

Isn’t that a way to describe Love?

How wonderful!

The history of mankind is full of stories and describes the consequences and impact of what happened when people acted according to the stories they believed in.

So, what is a story?  Without taking any specific example from our history (there are many) the following may help to understand how stories came to be…

~

Imagine primitive men from a small tribe living in a cave 5000 years ago, experiencing a huge thunderstorm in the middle of the night. Then a sudden explosion of a lightning bolt near the entrance of the cave, setting a tree on fire! The group is scared and doesn’t know what to do to make this go away…it is a terrible night and no one can sleep.

The shaman of the group explains the next day, that the fire from the heavens was a sign from the gods that they were displeased with the tribe and that something very special should be done in order to restore the balance or else things will go very badly for the tribe.

The people listen to his story (a big impressive man with fiery eyes) and feel that since “he knows” what the gods want, his word is truth. The shaman explains that because of the severity of this situation one of the children must be chosen to be sacrificed, and so it happens…

Many years later the tribe while sitting in their cave recalls this event and all present nod and confirm how this sacrifice has stopped the anger of the gods because since then this terrible event has never taken place again. This strengthens their belief that gods exist and special rituals are necessary to please them.

In the meantime, this story has reached other tribes who are very impressed by it, they believe it is also a way to prevent bad things from happening, so they start making special sacrifices every year to please the gods. A new religion is born…

~

Okay, this may sound like a particularly gruesome and extreme example, but is it? Isn’t a similar (primitive) mechanism still playing out today when thousands of young “freedom fighters” go to war and are sacrificed for the sake of their tribe, their nation, their story? Perhaps instead of trying to please many gods, there now is one god to be pleased, or one leader, or one country.

Okay, you may say that some of these stories and beliefs really matter, because there are millions of people believing in their importance. So they must have (some) truth to them. But is that so? We create stories in our head every day which we you may call “small” stories, but they can have big consequences. You may for instance meet someone who has another “religious/political/racial/national” story than you do,  who acts in a way you don’t like. Anger builds in you and you now become suspicious of people who you deem to be part of that tribe.

We may think we are rational reasonable people, but these primitive tendencies are still very strong in us. We so easily believe “stories”. Time and time again we fall for them, which is the reason that autocrats and tyrants come to power, by exploiting this mechanism.

We mankind live in something we call “Reality” but it seems many of us prefer to spend our entire life within the walls built by our story, our particular beliefs. We often fear to look outside these walls. Looking at the state of the world; perhaps it’s time we do. A story is not Reality itself. It only offers a particular interpretation. It provide answers, meaning and thereby a sense of security. That’s all. No need to take them so seriously, perhaps even better to question them instead! (if you have the courage)

You may for instance believe something about yourself; that you are a good person, or that you have negative qualities. You may believe that you belong to a certain nation, to a certain religion. You may believe that in the future things will be better, or worse.

What actually IS a belief?

Simply said; a belief is a thought. It resides/arises in your mind, not anywhere else. The essential difference with practical thoughts like “Let’s not forget to do shopping today”, is that a belief-thought is taken very seriously and always is “personal”, it refers back to “me” and “mine”. “I believe in this or that”…

Any statement like; “I am a republican/democrat” or “I am an American/Asian/European” are examples of such thoughts. Nobody knows exactly what it means to be an “European” or an “Asian”, yet these words are used everyday, as if they are important and meaningful, as if they point to something which is “real”. Something like “Asia” does not exist in reality. It is just a type of labeling that we have applied when we drew a map of the world. We have drawn some imaginary lines on a piece of paper. That’s all.

When belief-thoughts are repeated, often and by many people, those thoughts are taken even more seriously by even more people. This is true for all political, religious and other belief systems. A person who strongly believes in a certain thought, like “I am a proud Republican/Democrat” will often repeat this thought and will want this belief to be confirmed. Actually no one knows exactly what it means to be a proud “this or that”, but by making such statements, we feel that we belong, that we have a position, that we know something!

The consequence however of any position, any belief, is that it excludes or opposes other belief-thoughts. When someone identifies with being “pro-Brexit” and believes that a “Brexit” will solve their problems, information which apparently contradicts their conclusion, is now no longer welcome or interesting. We want our beliefs to be confirmed, not challenged.

The core of this article is not that any particular belief is better or worse than another. That’s not the point. The point is seeing the mechanism underneath.

Unless we begin to see the belief mechanism for what it is (just thoughts) we will take beliefs very seriously and always be ready to fight, hurt and kill others.

We fight, hurt and kill others, just on the basis of assumptions, beliefs, myths. That’s a significant part of human history isn’t it?

So the question that remains then is; are YOU willing to see the illusion of this?

Besides his work at university and various clinics, he has been actively involved in eduction, workshops and trainings regarding Mindfulness meditation for many years. In 2018 he published a paper on the “healing power of awareness”. In October this year we met and spoke about awareness, the role of the thinking mind and how transformation can come about through awareness.

When we struggle with something in life we often try to “think ourselves out of the problem”, which may result only in a greater sense of dilemma, limitation and suffering. A deeper awareness of what it is we seem to struggle with, can however be the greatest agent for change and transformation. In his paper, Willem Fonteijn writes:

“In psychotherapy, awareness is the major ingredient for sustainable and beneficial change. Clients are trained to become aware of their feelings and (hidden) thoughts. By doing so clients learn how to make better decisions and to cope with dysfunctional beliefs and emotions.

For all of this awareness is the key ingredient. The conditioned mind is not able to observe anything other than its own routine and habits. If a problem is raised the mind wants to solve it in a routine way. We need awareness to step out of the routine of the mind.

By observing what is happening from moment to moment in a neutral way, we open up to new aspects of our environment and ourselves. Awareness is the key ingredient in psychotherapy. For instance, psychoanalysis explores unconscious conflicts and brings them to awareness. {…} In the daily practice of psychotherapy, awareness is of ultimate importance.”

Seeking more knowledge and developing new technology clearly has many practical advantages, logical thinking has proven to be a very useful tool. Now in the 21st century, we live in the age of science, reason and rationality. Some scientists even think that ultimately everything (about reality) can and will be known, which suggests that knowledge seems to be the ultimate means we have to evolve as human beings.

The question this article poses: does the knowing-of-things have limitations?

One aspect is the fact that we are not infinitely smart and therefore at some point we’ll stumble on the limits of the human brain. This already seems to be so for quantum mechanics since nobody understands what the Schrödinger equation and wavefunction actually “is”, although the models and formulae work fine. That’s not the point though.

A more interesting question is: what does it mean when we say that we know something?

When you look deeper you will notice that knowledge always introduces a subject who knows something about an object. This implies that our thought-processes are inherently dualistic (subject-object) and only offer models and ideas about something.

The dangerous aspect of “knowing-things” is we start to believe that we know what something actually “is” and that is the great illusion!

When you for instance read the daily news about all that happens in the world, in a way you are made to believe that many of the reports describe situations/things which are real and actually exist.

The daily information we are bombarded with suggests that there really is something like the USA, and there really are democrats and republicans, there really are countries or groups of people who are the enemy, there really are conflicts between people of different religions, and so on and so forth… It’s absolutely endless and this process of “news” has been going on for thousands of years.

When you actually look deeper, you may wake up to seeing that all of these statements  are only based on thoughts about apparent people, things, objects etc. They are just stating concepts and labels.

Have you however ever seen “Europe” or “Asia”?  Have you ever met a “Chinese”? Do you really think that some people are your political opponents? Sorry folks, it is all one grand illusion, none of it is real, even though many people take these labels very seriously and this kind of information constantly seems to affirm that we are talking about “reality”. It’s not hard to see how such thinking leads to division, conflict and misery. When you are convinced there are real “enemies” out there, you are willing to wage war upon them, aren’t you? Could it be, that an “enemy” is nothing but a label you created in your head? Have you realized that some people may believe that you are their “enemy”?

You might ask; what happens when you truly wake up and see the illusion of this? It means you can’t take it seriously anymore, nor can you live and act like it’s real, right?

So what remains then?

The simple answer is; Life remains, Existence or Being, whatever you like to call it. Now you see “it all” without the labeling, all the ideas, without all the “knowing-about”. One could call that living as “not-knowing”, but language actually can’t capture it.

There is beauty in that, there is great freedom and love in that…always fresh and never known. What an amazing discovery and so simple really… So that’s the invitation. To dare and look into this…

Whether this psychological process of individuation is useful or not, positive or negative is not the point of this article. It happens. Apparently in all humans. But is individuation the end point? Many seem to assume so. Most likely however, individuation is not the end point. The psychological evolution of mankind has not ended, but has only just begun. Simply read the history books…

Suddenly there is pain! Eyes are hurting! The strange taste of seawater mixed with sand and blood. There is toppling over, the whole world is turning! Confusion! Strange noises and sound! Crying! Intense pain! Panic!

>> the Contraction

Standing up. Still crying. The body is shaking with anger and fear. Primordial feelings arise: “Life is not safe! Life and people can hurt me. I must defend myself or fight”. I grab the scoop and hit back. It is beginning to get clear now. There is me and there is other!

Very important day today. Must make a good impression on the boss. This must work out. No, just relax. Don’t worry. It will go fine. I am sitting here, waiting for the door to open, but soon he will ask me to come and enter his office. I wonder why he asked me to talk to him today? I hope he won’t give me a hard time, like last year. What shall I do, if that happens again? Maybe I should just let him talk and ignore it. Oh no, wait. That did not work out well for me last time. I looked like a fool. I must take my stand and show him that I am the best one for this job. It’s simple. I actually should be promoted to a better position. Really. My colleagues are not up to it. Though I must say that Mary Jane really is smart. Damn, what if she has already talked to him, before I did! I’m a fool, I should have asked for promotion last month! O my god, what will happen if I don’t get this job! Damn, I’m screwed if this does not work out! I am really in a tough situation! My heart is beating fast now. The door opens. There is my boss… I hope it goes well this time…

>> the Old man

My life did not work out as I wanted. I should have made better decisions.  Darn, I feel so unhappy and powerless. I can’t change the past but at the same time I can’t stop thinking about it. Maybe actually it was not my fault! I am not to blame really.  But here I am. I did not get what I wanted to get in my life. It’s OK to feel a bit depressed. Many people in my situation would feel that. Of course I feel bad. I wonder still though what would have happened if…

Becoming an individual (person) and finding our own way in life is perhaps a necessary step in our psychological development, but we are mistaken when we think that it is the last step and the only way to live… There are people who awaken out of this dream that there is a “me entity” who has a real past and a real future, has real problems to solve and is going to get and achieve things. (whether that is money, things, relationships or spiritual goals)

Could the next step in human psychological evolution be the letting go of this belief in “me” as a central “entity”?

Only a few hundred years ago the commonly held belief in religion (and science) was that the entire universe including the sun revolved around the Earth and was specially created for certain humans who belonged to a specific religious group. In those times, to doubt or criticize this, meant punishment, prison or death. Now in the 21st century it is seen how ridiculous and limited that point of view was.

Perhaps in similar fashion, it can be seen how ridiculous and limited the idea (belief) is that life revolves an actual “me” at its centre. The seeing of this illusion does not mean that life ends however. One can safely say that in a way, it is a whole new beginning, but not of anything or for anyone. The mind cannot grasp this. That is why it is Freedom and love.

A man once said: “Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away!”. (Philip K. Dick) The truth is that whatever you think or believe, reality will stay as it is. You may believe as hard as you can that the earth is flat, but your beliefs won’t change reality. You may believe that a “personal” God exists or does not exist, but it will not change reality… So in fact you can relax, nothing that you believe, will change reality.

So why create all these beliefs? We hold on to beliefs such as in our nationality, our religion, all the images we have of ourselves and others, in order to feel safe.

In order to feel safe, we are willing to manipulate, reject and even kill. If my belief system doesn’t match yours, then to me you are a stranger or perhaps even the enemy. Your existence may threaten the very basis of my life, which is based on my beliefs, my world view, my assumptions. This article poses that ultimately mankinds real “challenge” is actually not located anywhere outside of us (like climate crisis, famine or war) but lies within, in our beliefs systems! When you deeply feel into beliefs, you will see that in most cases, fear is what drives them…

The real challenge is to come to the point where you see through your own beliefs and how the false sense of security they provide, is a dream. It takes courage to face this.

Is it possible to wake up from this dream? To wake up from this dream means facing the nature of thought. However clever, complex and useful thinking is, it is still limited. Whatever we think or hope or believe regarding life, death, the universe and so on; reality does not care. It is what it is.

What would happen when you would no longer live life through the filter of your beliefs?

Could it be that when you would no longer take your beliefs seriously, you actually start to wake up to reality/life as it is? An always fresh discovery of all the infinite forms in which life expresses itself in every moment?

This seems like a wild proposition, but really it is not. It is simply the statement that we have the potential to move beyond all the old beliefs, all the old stories which we keep repeating.

To make it more personal; YOU have that very potential. Or better: you ARE that very potential. Can you see it?
