“Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.” — Paul Boese
So – I come to you with my head hanging a bit lower than usual. I found out just a couple of days ago that my website has not been sending me ANY inquiries for YEARS – 5 YEARS to be exact. There are 366 people who reached out to me for help and I didn’t know about them until a couple of days ago. Imagine my horror. Imagine my shock. And yes, imagine my anger. Thankfully, I realized pretty quickly that there was nothing I could do about it other than say “OMG, OMG, OMG” over and over again until the reality set in. There were so many messages from so many different wonderful sounding people. If you are reading this now and are one of the people who never heard back from me, please accept my sincerest apologies. I felt this was a good first step in amending the situation. I’m sorry that I wasn’t there in your time of need but I hope you are doing better now and your needs have been met. IF you still need some help, please reach out to me directly at cindy@aim4order.com. My website IS working now so the old way will also work.
And now, on to this month’s topic – FORGIVENESS!
May 2026
Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda!
One of my father’s favorite expressions was “Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda” which was his reply when we would explain how we wished a situation would have been handled differently. Others say ‘Best Laid Plans” – a whole host of replies when things don’t go our way.
Decluttering and Downsizing and even Organizing fit right into the Shoulda/Coulda/Woulda category when we don’t reach our lofty goals in a timely manner.
Many berate themselves, say unkind things about themselves, sink into a remorseful spiral and lose all motivation to pick themselves up and get going.
That’s why this month’s topic is FORGIVENESS. I am practicing forgiveness with my website snafu (actually more than a snafu but does it really matter?). Here are some forgiveness quotes and see if any speak to you:
“Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know before you learned it.” — Maya Angelou
“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” — Albert Einstein
“Anger makes you smaller, while forgiveness forces you to grow.” — Cherie Carter-Scott
“Forgiving [others] allows you to forgive yourself too.” — Jane Fonda
“I’m learning that how fast I forgive myself for making the wrong decision will determine how quickly I’m able to get out and correct it.” –Bozoma Saint John
“Let go of the idea that things could have happened differently, as if this life is a Choose Your Own Adventure book and you simply turned to the wrong page. You did the best you could with what you knew—and felt—at the time. Now do better, knowing more.” — Maggie Smith
“Why should we shy away with shame from having made a mistake? No human being is all wise; no human being always lives up to the best that he is capable of. Failure comes to everyone, except when one does nothing at all, which in itself is a failure. All we can do is to be honest with ourselves, be humble and try, as we gain wisdom, to rectify our mistakes and possibly to avoid some of them.” — Eleanor Roosevelt
Do you identify with any of these quotes? Is there ONE thing you can do right now to continue on your decluttering and organizing journey? Has anyone ever regretted getting stuff done?? When all else fails, grab a pencil/pen cup and get rid of the ones that don’t write, get rid of dried up sharpies, get rid of address labels that have your name misspelled, get rid of expired insurance policies or expired meds or coupons. You can do this.
And if you feel you are numb with overwhelm, get in touch. We stand ready to dive in and help clear away the clutter.

Parting with your Stuff Can be a Good Thing!
Parting with the things that clutter our lives can feel like an overwhelming task, akin to trying to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions—frustrating and confusing! At Aim 4 Order, we understand the emotional weight that comes with letting go. Imagine transforming your home into a more serene place where (almost) every item serves a purpose and brings you joy! By releasing unnecessary belongings, you’re not just cleaning up; you’re creating space for peace and clarity in your life. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to say goodbye to that collection of mismatched socks and the collection of expired coupons that could rival a novel? Our past clients have shared heartwarming stories of how decluttering has not only lightened their physical space but has also uplifted their spirits—like finding a long-lost friend! So, think about taking that first step toward a more organized and harmonious living environment. Set a small goal for yourself – even 10-15 minutes a day of decluttering and donating the items that haven’t seen the light of day in many years. If that feels too hard, then contact us and we can embark on this decluttering journey together!

As you may have heard before, the definition of Clutter is Delayed Decision Making. Once you make your decision about letting go, you will feel lighter – it’s basically a guarantee. Try letting go of ONE hard to decide item today and see how it feels. You will not regret it. And you may even realize that the release you feel will motivate you to do it again the next day.

Going Through Family Members’ Remaining Items
It’s been a rough few months for our family. We’ve lost both of my parents and my dad’s twin sister – the last of our treasured ‘elders’ who never seemed elderly to us. I have experienced firsthand what many of you have already experienced. I am blessed that all three were in their 90’s but the loss is immense.
When a loved one passes away, the process of sorting through their belongings can feel overwhelming and deeply emotional. Yet, while it may be painful, this act holds significant emotional, practical, and even healing value.
First, going through a deceased family member’s items helps preserve memories. Each object — a photograph, a letter, a piece of clothing — tells part of their story and connects you to moments you shared. Deciding which items to keep allows you to curate a meaningful collection of memories, transforming grief into remembrance.
Second, this process offers closure. Handling your loved one’s possessions helps make their absence real, guiding you gently through the acceptance of loss. It provides a tangible way to honor their life while moving forward.
Finally, it serves a practical purpose. Sorting items ensures that valuable documents, heirlooms, or sentimental treasures are not lost, and that their home or estate can be properly settled. It can also bring families together — sharing memories, dividing keepsakes, and celebrating the person’s legacy.
Though difficult, going through a loved one’s belongings is not merely a task — it’s an act of love, reflection, and healing. In the end, it helps transform grief into gratitude for a life well lived.
If you are overwhelmed by family member’s items yet to be figured out, we can help. The Aim 4 Order family of organizers is extremely compassionate in these situations and can gently guide you through this process. Reread this article until you find the courage to get started.

Take the End of Year Clutter Quiz!
Who doesn’t love a quick quiz to see how you rate in whatever category of life catches your attention? Why not do a clutter assessment – just between you and me (and technically, it can be just between you and you!).
Here goes:
Do you have one or more rooms in your home that have the door closed so no one can look inside?
Do you have enough spare plastic bags to distribute to the entire neighborhood?
Do you have enough empty boxes to pack up a warehouse?
Do you have decorations stored that haven’t seen the light of day in decades?
Do you have every address label that you ever received from a charity? Notepads? Doctors Without Borders maps?
Do you have so many sizes of clothes that you could makeover your home to look like a department store?
Are you saving special toys and games because your children and grandchildren might use them but now the youngest grandchild is too old to want them?
Do you still have sheets of school photographs of your children in varying poses throughout their school years?
MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION – Did you accomplish what you wanted to accomplish in 2024 regarding your home organizational goals?
If you answered YES to even one of these questions, think about getting some help. If you have a trusted and patient person in your life who is reliable, give it a try. If you need a gentle but firm person who will get the job done without torturing you, consider contacting us. Aim 4 Order is fully staffed and ready to help you and your family and friends. Our team of organizers is amazing – patient, kind, fun, energetic (without being annoying) and they know how to expertly guide you through the process. You will be amazed at the progress you can make in just one session.

This is probably one of the most common responses I have when someone asks me if they should keep an item. If you are asking, it means you probably don’t need it. Keep the things that one could not ‘pry out of your hands’ due to sentimentality or current usefulness but consider letting go of the things that don’t have a strong pull on you or your emotions.

“Riches do not consist in the possession of treasures, but in the use made of them.”
Napoleon Bonaparte
It is a common occurrence for people to find items of value as they downsize and declutter. Hidden treasures, right under your nose. Read ahead to find out how to uncover treasures.
Fall 2024
A (Treasure) Hunting We Will Go!
One of the highlights of working with clients over these past 20+ years, is the delightful discovery of valuable items, long forgotten.
In an effort to motivate you to do some decluttering on your own, here’s a list of some of the items we have found while digging through papers, piles, closets, floors and other nooks and crannies of your homes!
$60,000 in savings bonds (6 – $10,000 bonds that were in a file from a home that was sold many years prior).
$4000 in saving bonds (found in a shoe box in the basement with other old papers)
$70,000 in cash (found in a shoe box at the bottom of a closet filled with shoes and clothes.
Wedding band (found under the bed when the bed was being moved out).
Stack of checks (found in an envelope from someone’s milestone occasion and the checks were never cashed).
Beloved heirloom jewelry (in trunks, old gift boxes in attic, anywhere and everywhere you can imagine)
Gift cards, gift certificates and cash in old purses, drawers, files, cards, desks…..
So – even though you doubt that any such riches are in YOUR home, I invite you to do your own treasure hunt. Pick the most remote place in your home where the light of day hasn’t been seen in awhile. And as you’re hunting for treasure, bring a trash bag and recycle bag and see what you can get rid of. I promise that you won’t regret it.
And even if you don’t find an actual treasure (but I’m guessing you will find SOMETHING that you will be happy to have discovered), you will feel OH SO PROUD of yourself for the gift of additional space you will have as a result of your efforts. Remember my favorite motto – a little bit of decluttering is better than no bit. You’ve got this!!
And keep in mind the eloquent words of Napoleon Bonaparte above – or as I say, “Use or lose it.” Happy Hunting!

Value – the million dollar question and the one sticking point that can cause delays in downsizing and decluttering.
Summer 2024
I am a long time member of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO). Recently, there was an active discussion on Garage Sales. I am regularly asked about Garage Sales and I’m not a big fan. Having attended my fair share and participated in Flea Markets dating back to the 1980’s, I see that most items go for very little. However, I recall fondly the time we participated in the Flea Market on Route 40 and earned enough money to pay for our wedding bands (when the price of gold was waaaaay less). But I digress (again)……
Putting my own biases to the side, I thought it might be helpful to share the tips that organizers shared from around the world regarding “Best Practices” for Garage Sales.
Here goes – and I repeat – these are not my tips – they are from organizers from all over the world.
Garage sale best practices – general
Advertise what is in the sale and include photos via local FB groups, NextDoor, etc…The goal is to lure all types of buyers to the sale. Include “no early sales”…so people don’t come 30 minutes before the time stated the sale begins.
Decide if you only want cash or will you take a check or Venmo. If it’s cash only, you should include that in the ad.
Presentation matters, too- if things are laid out and displayed nicely,
Make sure you have bags and packing material at the check out.
Enlist help from family/friends/local teenagers. This can also help make sure people don’t steal stuff – this happens!
Have a plan for the leftovers – do not put back in circulation!
Check the value of valuables (gold and silver jewelry, etc.); can go to an appraiser. People always undersell valuables at garage sales.
If it is more than 50 decent household items (including tools), then you might want to consider doing an online auction like MaxSold. Competitive bidding usually yields better prices.
Garage sale best practices – pricing
Price everything.
Items like books and clothing don’t have to be individually priced…e.g., “Hardcover books $2 /paperback $1” is good.
You can do a $1 table where all the items cost a dollar.
You can price everything a little high and then offer people a deal if interested.
eBay is a good tool to gauge interest and what an item sold for under “completed sales,” but it may not be realistic for a garage sale.
For speed of setup and to make it easier to reduce prices in the last hour or so, I suggest a colored sticker system of pricing. Each color is a price point, e.g. yellow $1 (or put a yellow tablecloth under that whole table!), red $2, green $5, purple $10, white $20 (you get the gist), then have a board with the key to all the prices. Later slash the prices on the board, as appropriate, depending how motivated she is to clear items, maybe 50% off. Items over $20, get individual price stickers.
There were several warnings about theft at garage sales – from items being stolen to a professional couple using a distraction method that resulted in them walking off with all the cash. (I hated to include this tip but felt it was prudent to do so).
My favorite suggestion is the pricing tables with the colored tablecloths.
Bottom line – if you have the time and energy, why not give it a try? However, if you are faint of heart and sensitive, you may be very hurt/insulted when people offer pennies for your cherished possessions. Sometimes giving to a local charity is a much easier and ‘feel good’ method. Whatever you do, it’s never too late to part with the items you have that are not being treasured/used/appreciated.

I regularly hear people tell me about “Snow Day” projects that are waiting for them when they’re stranded at home. Now that it’s topping 100 degrees in the coming days, this is a GREAT time to do some in-home projects that involve letting go of accumulated ‘stuff.” I would NOT venture into the attic right now, but I would venture into the basement and closets and drawers throughout your home.
After speaking to a group at the Myerberg Senior Center yesterday, I found myself suddenly motivated to tackle my accumulation of stuff. I tore apart my closet and found the willingness to get rid of a lot of sweaters (it’s always easier to get rid of sweaters in the heat, I find) and I rearranged my shirts, shoes and pants so that the summer items are now easier to reach and the winter items are pushed to the deeper part of my tiny closet. I don’t have the luxury of a walk in closet which has its good and bad points.
It’s especially easy when I find things I forgot all about it and am able to reason with myself that I will not miss it, especially if I didn’t remember having it. This happened with a couple of purses I found hiding in my closet).
This morning, I dove into my cabinets in my office where there are a lot of “OH, I MIGHT NEED THIS ONE DAY” items and finally found the courage to recycle wads of paper with ‘valuable’ information that I can live without. Yes, I took a bunch of classes and courses over the years, but do I really need the souvenirs of stacks of information that I haven’t looked at in far too long? The answer (this time) was a resounding NO!
There have been times in the past when I wasn’t willing to get rid of certain things. BUT – the motivation of visiting children is a wonderful incentive to getting rid of more. Among the items found this morning was a stack of photos from a trip we took with my parents and in-laws in 1992 and am delighting in showing them to my children and parents this weekend. Once I show them again tonight, I am seriously considering tossing them because I believe they are duplicates and my husband has the photo album among his stuff (which is a whole other story!).
As promised, here is a list of “Beat the Heat” Activities for you:
Go through water bottles and thermal cups and let go of as many as you can. Sentimental ones can go up high or low or to a special friend or family member.
Go through your closet and rearrange your clothes by season. Bonus points for sorting clothes by type and color (sleeveless, short sleeve, mid sleeve, long sleeve…then jackets)
Go through your T-shirts and decide the ones you will never wear again and say, bye bye or turn them into a memory quilt by cutting out the logos and sewing them together.
Go through your desk and home office and take your old electronics to Staples or the dump for e-cycling.
Start a bin for shredding and either call a shred company who will come to your house (email me if you need a referral) or take it to Staples or Fed Ex. You can also search for “Free Shredding Events Near Me.” You don’t need old statements, especially when you have online accounts.
Try on a few pairs of pants and get rid of the ones that don’t feel comfortable.
Try on a few pairs of shoes and get rid of the ones that hurt.
Go through your pens and donate the overflow in a large zip lock bag. Many non profits use pens at their events and would love to discover a nice bagful at a local thrift shop.
Dump some old cosmetics and toiletries that are past their prime, especially if they are open. Unopened items in good condition make a nice donation to shelters.
On the night before trash day, go through your fridge, freezer and pantry closets to toss expired items.
Would I dare suggest that you do this whole list today or this weekend? NO WAY! Would I dare suggest that you take 10-15 minutes per day and work your way through your stuff gently with music in the background and plenty of water to drink? YOU BET!
Happy DeCluttering and Organizing and I promise you will feel much cooler and lighter when the first 10-15 minute spurt occurs! (And in case you don’t, consider giving us a call – we love bringing joy to our clients).

April 2024
“A stitch in time saves nine.”
This old proverb means that if you sort out a problem immediately it may save a lot of extra work later.
I’m thinking about short cuts and hacks to getting organized and decluttered. If we can prevent clutter from starting, that sounds like a really great short cut – right?
Here are some ideas to get your decluttering enzymes going:
When you are tempted to buy the latest hot selling book, first go to Libby and order a digital sample OR go to Amazon and order a FREE SAMPLE to see if you even like what you are reading. And – there’s a chance that you may not even have time to read the sample which will save you time, money and space.
Consider going on line with your investment company(s). Monthly investment statements, proxy voting paperwork, investment brochures can really cause a lot of accumulated paperwork. Some express concerns about the safety of online accounts, but with all the horror stories about missing mail, it may be safer to stick to online accounts. If you can’t make the change, at least consider shredding decades of old statements that may be filling up your filing cabinets, drawers, floors and closets.
Load up your car OR have a hauler come and take away all your old electronics (printers, computers, cell phones). Why wait until it’s time to sell your house and pay thousands of dollars in hauling costs? If you are worried about hard drives of old computers, go to Staples and ask them to destroy what needs to be destroyed – you may have to pay for that service but the actual recycling is free.
If you have old cans of food and other expired food, load it up the night before trash night and get it out now. Why wait until it’s rotted or decomposed – do it this week and gift yourself new space in your cupboards or pantry.
Gather up some broken jewelry – gold and sterling silver – and go to 2-3 local jewelers to see who will offer you the best deal. Cash back on the spot – that’s a shortcut that can pay off well!
Give yourself a treat and pick one item and see how you do this week. You will not regret it!
Happy Decluttering to all!

Just thinking about this extra day, February 29th, and how it can be best celebrated. Would you, could you consider it as “Free Time?”
February 2024
Many of us yearn for ‘free time’ and many of us feel like that is an impossible feat. Clutter and disorganization can rob us of free time and that is not fun!
Here are few quick tips to manage your own expectations of how you can make time for Organizing:
Remember that small doses of organizing and decluttering can go a long way. Commit to 15 minutes for one day and see how it feels. Guessing you’ll have energy left to do it again soon and not feel burned out or frustrated. Remember – always start with the easy stuff first.
Sign up for a donation pick up or locate a donation drop off point BEFORE you get started. It is super helpful to identify who gets your stuff when you make the cut. If you need ideas, you can use Google to search opportunities in your area. There really is a limitless supply of people and places in need.
Every time you do your 15 minutes, treat yourself to 15 minutes (at least) of something you genuinely enjoy. It could be a walk, a home movie or old photo albums, a bath, a phone call, a nap, garden…and please note I didn’t mention any activities that introduce more stuff into your home.
When you feel stuck or frustrated, pivot to something easier – for example, mounds of address labels, pen and pencil holders, sock drawer, belts, rusty or damaged kitchen tools.
When it feels too overwhelming, think of ONE thing you can do – the next step – and don’t overthink beyond that.
Easy does it wins the declutter game and I hope you will continue to play.
Happy Decluttering to all!
