It’s official, the Switch 2’s delayed edition of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is inbound for the console this September.

Welcome to the Switch 2, Dark Knight

Released just last month, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has gotten a huge amount of praise. It’s easy to see why, especially for those who might be Batman super-fans. The game features a massive open-world Gotham City to play in, plus sports some sharp graphics.

Then there’s the premise, which more or less takes into account the entire multimedia history of the superhero. Not only that, but it actually attempts to mash all of those disparate elements up, and make them work together. That’s no mean feat, considering the tonal shifts between eras

But while the game is out now for all of the major platforms, that first release didn’t include the Switch 2. Switch 2 players shouldn’t fret though, as they’ll be able to hit the road with the Batman this fall.

Don’t forget the loaded Deluxe Edition

While it’s not exactly around the corner, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will be heading towards a September release on Switch 2. Fans will be able to look for it to hit the console on the 18th of that month. Along with the base version too, the Deluxe Edition is coming as well.

And just for the Switch 2 version of that, there’ll be what looks like an exclusive and physical bonus. As for what that’ll be, well, it’ll be a LEGO Batman mini-figure. Yawn? Well hang on, because this won’t be just any old Batman mini-figure. Nope, we’re talking about a “LEGO Retro Video Game Batman”.

If you’re wondering what’s so great about that, it’s that it’ll be modeled to look like the iconic purple-hued Batman from the classic NES game. It even looks like it comes complete with a blue face and pixely printing. Ah the memories.

There is one caveat to this bonus however, and that’s that it’ll be included only “while supplies last”. So just be aware of that, if you’re planning to pick up a copy. And if you’d like to see the full list of what you can expect from the Switch 2’s Deluxe Edition of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, scroll down.

  • Free LEGO Retro Video Game Batman™ Minifigure (*available with physical edition only & while supplies last)
  • Access to the Legacy Collection DLC, incl. new suits, vehicles, and Batcave items inspired by the Batman: Arkham videogame series, Batman Beyond television series, and a party music themed pack
  • Access to the Mayhem Collection DLC, incl. the new Mayhem Mode with The Joker and Harley Quinn as playable characters, a new story mission, and the Sinister Pack, consisting of seven (7) new suits (one [1] for each of the main game playable characters), five (5) new Batcave items, and a new Batmobile to traverse the open world

One of the greatest point-and-click adventure games of all time is back courtesy of Limited Run games. Grab Maniac Mansion this month.

Watch that microwave

If you were playing video games back in the NES era, and you love classily-styled adventure games, then you likely remember Maniac Mansion fondly. The Lucasarts title was a gem, sending a group of teens into a mansion filled with lunatics and creeps, plus a rogue tentacle or two.

But while that might sound like a scarefest, Maniac Mansion was actually a comical adventure. The game’s quest was more along the lines of The Addams Family than a slasher flick. And now it’s back.

Just to be clear, this isn’t a remake that we’re talking about (though…), but a re-release. And it comes courtesy of Limited Run Games, a company that’s made a name for itself with presenting titles that are out of print, or never got physical copies to begin with.

LRG will be stocking both the NES and PC versions of the classic title, with all the bells and whistles that you’d want.

    null
  • NES fans looking to boost their collection can check out the Premium Edition. This version of Maniac Mansion includes the Standard Edition goods and more, like a retro cart keychain and an additional double-sided poster. This Edition arrives in an embossed outer box that matches Limited Run’s previous Lucasfilm Games retro releases to give your collection that polished look.
  • The PC Collector’s Edition of Maniac Mansion is catered perfectly to point-and-click collectors. Like Limited Run’s recent releases of LoomSam & Max Hit the Road, and Day of the Tentacle Remastered, this edition is lovingly crafted to mimic the original PC release. Inside are even more premium retro goodies, like the Nuke’m Alarms Owner’s Disarmament Guide, a reproduction of the original MSDOS manual, and a themed USB stick that contains a copy of the game.

Limited Run Games press release

Basic and Premium Editions will be on sale for the NES, plus a Collector’s Edition for the PC, and all will officially hit on February 17th. Don’t worry though, this isn’t your typical Limited Run sale. You won’t have to be there day one and rush to buy any of these editions, as pre-orders will be open until April 2nd.

Nintendo is finally adding a few more titles to the Switch’s online subscription service, and they include the series capping DKC 3.

Dixie’s time to shine

I remember the first Donkey Kong Country for the SNES extremely well. It was a revelation, with its rendered looks, and also brought the big title ape back into the spotlight. The two sequels though, didn’t catch my eye for some reason.

But that’s me, and there are more than a few fans of the whole series. It’s understandable, since all of them were extremely well made adventures, and offered the addictive but tough-as-nails platforming action that only Nintendo could deliver.

And now, if you’re a subscriber to the Nintendo Switch’s online service, you can finally play all three of these gems in one place. Yep, Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble is set to hit the service this week, and it’s not alone. A total of 5 new games will be arriving, with 4 SNES titles and 1 NES entry.

They include:

Super NES

  • Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble! – Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong have gone missing. As Dixie Kong checks in with the rest of the family, she gets stuck with babysitting duties! But that won’t stop her from going on her next adventure. Play as Dixie Kong or Kiddy Kong solo, against a friend or with a friend. Take advantage of their abilities as they throw each other into action in over 40 levels.
  • The Ignition Factor – Intense firefighting action puts you in the heat of the moment. Take control of a brave firefighter as he battles to save people from towering infernos and flame-filled factories. Keep your cool to rescue all the victims. Get them out of the fire and back to safety!
  • Super Valis IV – A reddish moon calls forth evil, and the bells toll for battle. Take on the role of Lena, the only warrior able enough to wield the Valis sword against the forces of evil in this action platformer. The longer you take clearing a stage, the stronger the boss at its end will get. Dash, jump and use the items you collect along the way to traverse all seven stages.
  • Tuff E Nuff – Four champions seek to challenge the great tower! In this action game, your special attacks level up each time you defeat a certain number of enemies, making your hero grow even more powerful. Make good use of your guard, and carefully time your special attacks against all the tough guys you face on your way to Jade, the self-proclaimed Fighting King. With the instant-replay feature, you can have fun watching the last moments of a fight play out!

NES

  • Nightshade – Sutekh has blanketed Metro City under a shroud of crime and corruption. The big crime bosses now answer only to him. To avenge his fallen idol, Mark Gray dons the guise of Nightshade, the last person standing between Sutekh and total control of Metro City. Using a combo of point-and-click and action gameplay styles, stalk the streets of Metro City in search of vengeance.

All of the above will be landing on the Switch on December the 18th, this Friday. Again though, this is for subscribers only.

Ready for another round of SNES (and NES) titles on the Switch’s subscriber service? A true classic is coming up with the original Donkey Kong Country.

Going to the country

There are quite a few Super Nintendo games that have stood the test of time. The best of these showcase the pinnacle of the 16bit era’s graphics, and exceptional play control. That being something of a specialty for Nintendo, they do tend to be first-party games.

Each one of those points gets hit by a game that’s on the way for Switch online subscribers this month, since we’re getting Donkey Kong Country. The first of three games, the original DKC is a true classic, and it has basically been that since it was released.

Not that it’s alone this month though. The service is also getting Natsume Championship Wrestling. Definitely one of the lesser knowns 16bit grapplers, NCW does sound interesting nonetheless. In particular, that the game offers a massive amount of moves per wrestler.

So that’s what’s coming up for the SNES side of things, but Nintendo is very much still supporting their ‘virtual’ NES as well. This month brings The Immortal for that.

All of the above lands on July 15th. Scroll down for the official rundown.

Super NES

  • Donkey Kong Country – Armed with chest-pounding muscle, mighty barrel rolls and awesome vine-swinging skills, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong set out to face their adversaries, K. Rool and his reptilian crew of Kremlings. Play solo, compete with a friend or play cooperatively in over 100 levels filled with collectibles and hidden bonus levels.
  • Natsume Championship Wrestling– Choose from 12 outrageous wrestlers and bring the pain! With a robust grappling system and over 50 moves to master, experience the most realistic wrestling action of the 16-bit era. Test your might against the AI, or up to two players can compete in exhibition, tag team and round robin matches.

NES

  • The Immortal – Grab your Wizard’s Pack and let your quest unfold as you explore the Labyrinth of Eternity. Delve into the dungeon’s depths to uncover the mysteries of the ancient ruins. Your teacher Mordamir awaits below!

A Nintendo Switch Online membership offers access to growing libraries of classic Super NES and NES games, such as The Legend of Zelda™: A Link to the Past™, Super Metroid™and Super Mario Bros.™ 3.

The paid online service is also a great way to connect and play compatible games online with friends and family around the world. Pay a visit to a friend’s island who also owns the Animal Crossing™: New Horizons game or invite them back to your island and show off all your quirky neighbors and the cool upgrades you’ve made to your home. With online play in compatible games like Pokémon™ SwordPokémon™ ShieldSuper Smash Bros.™ UltimateMario Kart™ 8 DeluxeTetris 99® and many others, a Nintendo Switch Online membership can help you experience everything Nintendo Switch has to offer.

A quartet of new games are making their way to the Nintendo Switch’s subscriber-exclusive NES and SNES this month.

Expanding the library

The Switch’s online service isn’t too bad honestly. For one thing, it’s cheap. But past that, it’s a decent service (voice-support notwithstanding) and it offers some free classic games to play.

These aren’t exactly the same caliber of stuff that you can find for “free” on the Xbox and PlayStation, but they come with the sub, and really who’s gonna argue? Some of them are legit classics too, like SMB3 and Zelda II.

This month’s selection… well it’s not what I’d call jam-packed with icons. In fact, all four of the games hitting the service are pretty niche.

Super NES

  • Pop’n TwinBee – The sixth game in the TwinBee series, this vertically scrolling shooter takes place in a cute, poppy setting. TwinBee and WinBee hear that the great Dr. Murdock has lost his wits, so they set off to return him to his normal self. This game was originally released in Japan and Europe in 1993, but this will be its first release in the U.S.
  • Smash Tennis – In Smash Tennis, the controls may be simple, but there’s plenty of room for skill! With strong shots, weak shots, lobs and eight different court types, you can develop all sorts of approaches, unlocking the deep strategies of tennis. This game was originally released in Japan in 1993 and Europe in 1994, but this will be its first release in the U.S.

NES

  • Shadow of the Ninja – In the midst of disorder and oppression, two shadow warriors rise to the people’s cry for help. Choose to play as one of two ninja masters from the Iga clan as they infiltrate enemy front lines. Master tactics of stealth as you acquire additional weapons and power-ups in order to overthrow an evil emperor and destroy his wicked empire, solo or with a friend.
  • Eliminator Boat Duel – In this powerboat racing game, get behind the wheel of one of the fastest machines on the water to earn boatloads of in-game cash. Drivers earn thousands of dollars for competing, and you’ll use your winnings to repair and upgrade your boat to push your competitive edge to its maximum. A little aggression goes a long way – just try not to get sunk yourself, or you’ll be swimming back to dry land.

Yeah, not the biggest of names. One kind of cool thing though, is that the two SNES games have never seen a western release. During their original launches, both were limited to the Japanese market. So it’s neat that they’re finally getting out there to the rest of the globe.

If you’d like to play ’em, or the two NES games, then February 19th is the magical day. All four will arrive and be playable for subscribers then.

It’s holiday time, and there are few little gems to pick from if you’re a Nintendo gamer. Mostly those include Virtual Console titles.

Now you’re playing with power

The Switch lacks the Virtual Console of the Wii or Wii U, it’s true, but it’s slowly building its own little retro library. That has arrived in the form of the virtual NES and SNES that are available exclusively to the Switch’s online service subscribers.

While the frequency of game drops has lessened from the monthly system that Nintendo had set up before the SNES titles arrived, there’s still some quality stuff hitting. This month’s arrivals include a bevy of classics for both iconic consoles. And those include the formerly SNES Classic-exclusive Star Fox 2.

Beyond those there isn’t a ton of stuff, though there is a notable mobile port. Yes, I typed those words. Warhammer Quest II lands on the console this week, and it’s a very solid turn-based title. It might not be everyone’s cup of grog, but if you’re a Warhammer fan I definitely recommend at least taking a peek.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online*

  • Star Fox 2 – This 3D rail-shooter and second installment of the Star Foxseries was first designed for the Super NES system, but went unreleased until it appeared on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system in 2017. This time, Emperor Andross is on a crusade to conquer the Lylat system and the Star Fox team itself. After a long wait, Star Fox is back in action.
  • Super Punch-Out!! – Featuring the tight gameplay and humor the series is known for, this sequel to the NES classic sees Little Mac return to the ring with the World Video Boxing Association belt once again at stake.
  • Kirby Super Star – That awful King Dedede is at it again – he’s stolen all the food in Dream Land. It’s up to Kirby to get it back and ultimately save Popstar from being taken over. There’s never a dull moment as Kirby dashes, flies and fights!
  • Breath of Fire II – Set 500 years after the original, take on the role of Ryu, the last member of the Dragon Clan. A cast of unusual and exciting companions join you in your adventures across a wondrous land full of magic and mystery.
  • Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online*
    • Crystalis – An epic story for action-RPG fans is ready to unfold. Set in a world where civilization lies in ruins, the young protagonist awakes from cryogenic sleep and the adventure begins. Collect the Sword of Wind and venture into the unknown.
    • Journey to Silius – Join Jay on his run-and-gun mission to take down the mechanical army responsible for his father’s death. Defeat endless waves of attack robots and fulfill his father’s dream of developing a space colony in the Silius Solar System.

DLC:

  • Team up for Screams When New DLC** Haunts Luigi’s Mansion 3 – The Luigi’s Mansion 3 Multiplayer Pack can now be pre-purchased for $9.99 in Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch system, and it features waves of new themed ghosts for ScareScraper mode and new mini-games for ScreamPark mode. The Luigi’s Mansion 3Multiplayer Pack includes both Part 1 and Part 2, which will not be available for individual purchase, with Part 1 arriving by April 30, 2020. Part 1 includes three new mini-games for the multiplayer ScreamPark mode. It also introduces three new outfits for Luigi with matching floor themes and new themed ghosts in the cooperative ScareScraper mode. As a special bonus for those who purchase the DLC, players will receive an in-game Polterpup light called the Flashlight Type-P, which can be used during ScareScraper or Story Mode. Steel your spine, Luigi, and seek out those specters!
  • Free Winter Wonderland Update Brings Festive Cheer to Overcooked! 2 – Winter Wonderland is a celebration of the 2019 DLC** for Overcooked! 2, and includes new seasonally dressed kitchens inspired by the DLC packs Campfire Cook Off, Night of the Hangry Horde and Carnival of Chaos. Nintendo expands the Switch online service’s NES console yet again. This time with 2 lesser known classics- Kung-Fu Heroes and Vice: Project Doom.

Kung-Fu Doom

I have to admit, I’ve only ever heard of both of these games in passing. And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. But when you think about it, that’s actually pretty great.

Nintendo has a whole mess of huge titles already added to the subscriber-only NES on the Switch. So plussing in a few games that are less known, and maybe less fans have played? That’s pretty nice.

Speaking of, here’s what’s available as of August 21st:

  • Kung-Fu Heroes – Monsters have taken Princess Min-Min and the 10 treasures of the land, and the people have fallen into sorrow. Only Kung-Fu Masters Jacky and Lee can save the princess and retrieve the treasures! Their journey will take them to eight different castles filled with hosts of traps and obstacles. Use punches and the Miracle Kick to defeat the enemies. You will need quick wits and lightning reflexes to make it to the last castle!
  • Vice: Project Doom – There exists a group of undercover detectives who dare stand up to the evil in the world… They are known as Vice. Officer Quinn Hart, a member of Vice, is on the case and after the truth. High-speed car chases, action-packed battles employing three types of weapons and a mode with three 3D rail-shooting stages all bring this cyberpunk world to life.

July’s NES games have been revealed for the Nintendo Switch Online exclusive virtual console. But more exciting might be the rewind feature.

Retro rewind

Before we get to the actual games, let’s talk about the rewind. Nintendo has revealed that the virtual NES will be getting a rewind feature, p[utting it in line with other retro consoles out there.

Exactly what it sounds like, the rewind ability will allow Switch Online subscribers to rewind their virtual console NES titles. This is done by simply pressing ZL and ZR, and holding them down. That’s it.

Retro mini consoles and game collections tend to offer something like this, so it’s cool to see it here as well. And honestly, any new features added to the virtual NES is worth talking about.

As for the actual free games this month, they’re kinda… meh.

  • Wrecking Crew – In the days before Mario and Luigi became sports stars in their downtime from saving the princess, they tried their hands as one-man wrecking crews. With a hammer as their only tool, take control of the brothers and set out to destroy ladders, rip out pipes, knock out walls and detonate explosive devices. But make sure to plan your path of destruction carefully, as each building is designed as its own clever puzzle.
  • Donkey Kong 3 – Based on the third game in the enormously popular arcade series, Donkey Kong 3 introduces an exterminator named Stanley as he desperately tries to protect the flowers in his greenhouse from Donkey Kong. Armed only with a can of bug spray, Stanley must force Donkey Kong higher and higher into the greenhouse rafters until Donkey Kong is off the screen and the next stage is reached.

All of the above lands on July 17th.

Nintendo Switch’s subscriber-exclusive virtual NES is getting two more classics. Both Kid Icarus and StarTropics are landing on the service.

Growing library

I think we’re well past the point where gamers could look at Nintendo’s virtual NES with a critical eye. The free platform (for online service subscribers) started off well and has been supported steadily ever since.

We’ve seen no shortage of classic games, with them hitting in pairs (at least) once a month. March sees just that, with 2 more games arriving. They’re real classics too, with both Kid Icarus and StarTropics posting.

Both games will be available as of March 13th.

  • Kid Icarus – The evil goddess Medusa has stolen the Three Sacred Treasures and imprisoned the goddess of light, Palutena, in her evil plot to control all. Play as Pit, a young angel who has been entrusted with a magical bow and arrow. Fight against hordes of enemies that swoop from above and below. Secure the Three Sacred Treasures from their evil guardians, equip them and face Medusa in the final battle.
  • StarTropics – Step into the shoes of Mike Jones, a teenage star pitcher from Seattle, who has come to the tropics to visit his famous archaeologist uncle, Dr. Jones. After being told that his uncle has been abducted, Mike begins a perilous quest in order to rescue him and figure out the mysterious plot behind his disappearance. Luckily for Mike, he meets helpful villagers and finds more powerful weapons as he explores numerous locations and island hops using his uncle’s submarine.

Following on the heels of yesterday’s Direct, Nintendo has a surprise big week in the eShop. A Yoshi demo, Final Fantasy IX, Tetris 99 and more are available now.

Power up

Now this is more like it. Nintendo shocked fans with a huge Nintendo Direct yesterday, and has followed that up with an excellent set of postings for this coming week.

How’s Olli Olli, Final Fantasy IX, the demo for Yoshi’s Crafted World, Kirby’s Adventure, Super Mario Bros 2, and Tetris 99 sound? All of those are either up right now or coming this week.

Of course, all the biggest stuff is accompanied by the usual assortment of secondary offerings. There’s not too much that stands out on that list, but then again noting really has to.

Anyway you look at it, it’s a great week for Switch gamers. Oh, and if you missed the Direct, check out our summary here.
