Live at Lucille’s: Season 2
Kenny Banks Jr Trio

I love music.  Good music.  Music of almost any genre.  There’s something especially exciting about jazz music.

I love directing TV.  Live TV.  TV programs of entertainment or sporting events.  There’s nothing like the challenge of live TV, where anything can happen.

On a rainy night in late January, “two great tastes that taste great together” joined forces in the local East Tennessee PBS studio to revive an old Knoxville jazz tradition.  Lucille’s.

Whenever improvisational music is performed on camera, the TV director has to immerse him/herself into the performance and become “the fifth Beatle.”  I’m constantly looking for the nuances – a look, nod, wink or chromatic bend in a chord – that signal to the band-mates “hey, we’re about to go to the ‘B Section‘ here.”

Usually, TV productions isolate various camera angles and insert those golden moments in the editing process.  Sometimes, we capture them live as they happen.

The way we record Live at Lucille’s is completely extemporaneous.  No rehearsals.  No music scores.  No script.  Just feel the music and take the shot as it happens.  It’s a fun craft to show the audience a live performance in the moment.

It’s like being in a band again.

National Clean Out Your Inbox Week is always observed the last full work-week of January.

It’s a time for all of us to handle the clutter in our email account that puts a drain on our mental capacity and causes serious IT issues for our computers.

(Ask your computer repair person about excessive emails and corrupt PST files. Their solution is to clean out your inbox.)

Clean Out Your Inbox Week began on Monday in the Be Media Savvy office by deleting more than 7000 emails…and unsubscribing from a dozen email lists to help cut down on unnecessary email in the future.

Email marketing is one of the many services we provide for small business owners, so we paid very close attention to why we opted out of those lists.

Do you want your marketing emails to survive the great purge of Clean Out Your Inbox Week?  They will, if you practiced good email hygiene last year.  If you see an uptick in unsubscribes or opt-outs this week, pay attention to these five factors in your email marketing this year.

Write better headlines

An inbox with a lot of emails in bold font, because they are still unopened, screams “delete” and  “unimportant.”

Email marketing can only be effective when it’s opened and read.  Strong headlines improve open rates.

“When you confuse, you lose.”  Email headlines must be digestible and actionable, because your reader will give you a fraction of a second of consideration before deciding to read or trash.

Headlines are not the place to be too clever for your own good.  Be as plainspoken and un-mysterious as you can.  No one likes unpleasant surprises, and clickbait (clever or misleading) headlines always deliver surprises – often unpleasant ones.

And don’t forget to write a pre-header message, too, if your email service provider’s templates allow you to do that.

Do you know the feeling of empowerment you get when caller ID tells you who’s on the phone?  A well-crafted headline and pre-header sentence do that for your reader.  They break down the resistance to opening your emails by addressing the fear of the unknown.

Get Permission

Always make sure you get permission from a contact before adding them to your mailing list.  This is not only courteous and ethical, it’s a legal requirement by Congress – CAN-SPAM Act of 2017 – because early email marketers were not acting courteously or ethically.  (THAT’s why we can’t have nice things!)

No business card-munching or harvesting addresses from CC distribution lists, event attendee lists, or email addresses published on the internet.  Just because the information is available to you does not mean you have cart blanche to send promotional emails.  Instead, email them once from your personal email account and ask them to opt-in to receive marketing emails from your business.

Imagine someone who’s cleaning out their inbox comes across a half-dozen emails from you and wonders, “How did this business get my email address?”  If none of your emails remind them why or how they gave you their email address – the least damaging thing they can do is unsubscribe.

The most damaging thing that can happen to you for spamming someone’s inbox without permission is a hefty fine of $16,000 per email message.  If you think CAN-SPAM is rigorous, you should look at the European Union’s GDPR Act of 2018!

Always gain permission, and always honor opt-out requests.

Segment Your List

Does everyone in your contacts list get the same email message every time you send a newsletter?  That’s another mistake that prompts people to unsubscribe.

Instead, you should be segmenting your list – grouping names by interests – so that you can send a message that is relevant to its recipients.

For instance, let’s pretend you’re an attorney who practices family law.  You don’t want to send your adopting parents newsletters about divorce, and your divorcing couples may not need to know about adoption issues at this time (although step-parent adoptions may come into play down the road).

Visit your ESP’s (email service provider) Help section for instructions on how to segment your list.

Send Quality Content

Ask yourself, “Does my email marketing bring value to my customer’s day?”

“Value” is the big qualitative factor that drives the decision whether to remain on your email list or not.  As long as your email messages offer one of the 3 E’s of value – education, entertainment, or endearment – your chances of retaining a reader during National Clean Out Your Inbox Week remain strong.

“How do I write quality content?” you may ask.

Begin by understanding your customer.  Marketing that is customer-centric will resonate with your readers.  Write to your customer about their current problem, need or desire.  Stay away from talking about yourself too much.  They don’t care about you right now, other than to evaluate if you have a solution to their problem.

Coming soon: Be Media Savvy will offer a short seminar on Branding and Messaging to Influence Your Customer.  We’ll talk more in-depth about how to communicate with customers and prospects in a way that brings value to their day – and to your revenue.

Monitor Frequency

Little Red Riding Hood chose Baby Bear’s bed because it was “just right.”  The same goes for your contacts this week as they’re cleaning out their inbox.

Did you send far too many emails too frequently?  Opt-out.

Did you send emails so infrequently that they forgot you between newsletters?  Unsubscribe.

What’s the secret formula for how many and how often?  There isn’t a pat answer to that question.

The best I can offer is to tell you to send as many emails for as often as necessary to claim your spot in your customer’s awareness.  If you have nothing valuable to add this week, skip the newsletter and send a short note.  You might get away with skipping a week, but you’ll be hard-pressed to make up ground after skipping a month without emailing your customers and prospects.

If you’re not sending emails because you’re afraid people will unsubscribe for sending them too many – you have effectively opted out of email marketing for them.  They can’t read what you don’t send!

Conclusion

Send emails with valuable content frequently enough for people to remember who you are and to anticipate receiving something of benefit. That’s the basics of surviving National Clean Out Your Inbox Week.

Ultimately, sales will grow as your contacts read your emails, remember your brand, and respond to your marketing.

As you greet a new year, it’s a natural time to set goals for what you will achieve in the upcoming 12 months and to reflect on your accomplishments of the past.

How did you do last year?  The bottom line doesn’t lie.  In fact, bank statements are so honest that some people will ignore getting to the bottom line for weeks or months.  They’re afraid of bad news.

Have you, or someone you know, ever waited with baited breath for an accountant to declare if the company is still afloat as they hand over the tax filings?  Yes?  No?  Am I the only one?

Maybe the bottom line doesn’t tell the entire story for small business owners.  While dollars and cents are the lifeblood of your business, you can also celebrate intangible victories, whether your bottom line is printed in black or red ink.

Did you learn a new skill or master a technique?  How many new friendships did you forge through networking, collaborating, volunteering and prospecting?  Is your home or office more welcoming because you finally eliminated clutter last year?  Were you free to spend more time with family or pursuing personal goals?

There’s more to life than keeping your nose to the grindstone…but the more that stone grinds, the more it supports the lifestyle of its owner!

So, let’s turn the page and look forward.  How big are your goals for 2019?  How much growth do you project to create in the next 12 months?

And most importantly:  Does that number scare you just a little bit?

If it doesn’t, keep putting zeroes on the end of it until you get a lump in your throat!

We threw a number on the wall last week in a planning conversation.  I began to sweat a little bit, because I realized it meant I’d have to work 1000 more hours next year.

There are other means to reaching our financial goals besides forfeiting sleep, weekends, vacations and holidays…but my first thought was “how am I going to manage this myself?”

big goals

If our goals were a tree trunk, they had officially grown too thick to wrap our arms around and touch fingers. And that’s when it hit me.  I needed to put this in my plan; a comprehensive plan that creates more desire in the marketplace and outlines new delivery systems for fulfilling customer demand.

Rather than shrink the tree, we’re defining new ways to increase our reach.

We hope your tree is too fat to hug, too!  Let your dreams direct your goals, and your goals drive your actions.

We were awakened before the dawn by a familiar cry.  “Granna!”

Our four-year-old granddaughter, who had spent the night at our house, was up and looking for company.

“Come in,” my wife said.

No movement on the doorknob.  Just continued wailing outside our bedroom door.

“Come on in, baby,” she extended her invitation again.

“I can’t. There’s too much stuff in my hands!”

She had traveled the hallway to our bedroom door laden with a blanket, a plush teddy bear, a Minnie Mouse, a Cinderella doll, an orange Beanie Baby, and a 3-foot stuffed rattlesnake.  Her little hands were full, and she couldn’t grasp the doorknob.

If she helped herself through the door, it meant she risked dropping one of her comfort items.

All she could do was hang onto the baggage she’d brought along and hope someone else would open the door.

Doesn’t that sound like some entrepreneurs?

We have a door we want opened, or a plateau we want to rise above, but we’re so busy hanging onto the comfortable and familiar that we fail to see how to get what we want.

If only we were willing to let go of something.

Maybe it’s your penchant for doing everything yourself.

“No one else can do it to my standards.”  In reality, you’ll do it if you ever get around to it…but it’s been four weeks and you still haven’t gotten to it, yet.

Maybe it’s your favorite distraction that allows you to procrastinate rather than tackle the challenge ahead of you.  Leveled up on Sugar Smash again?  Great!  Try taking that to the bank or offering it to your vendors in lieu of pay.

Andy Stanley has a book, The Principle of the Path, that calls us into action to make our intentions become reality.  We are good at defining our goal. Do we set out on a path that leads to the goal?

When you choose your actions, you set a course.  When you set a course, you have already determined your destination and consequences.

What are you carrying today that hinders your progress or veers you off course?

Put it down.  Quit playing it safe.

Create the capacity or bandwidth to handle what you need to pick up in order to travel down the path to your new, desired state.

“One Mississippi. Two Mississippi.”

If you’re a kid who grew up in the South, you probably know what comes next.

These were the rules for backyard football in my neighborhood:
► Two-hand touch,
► First team to 100 wins (unless the streetlights came on or somebody’s Momma called them to dinner first),
► Defensive linemen had to count to “Three Mississippi” before they could rush the passer.

Small business owner, did you know there is a similar marketing rule that hits you right in your pocket?

“Three Mississippi” is, in my humble opinion, a most-important rule.

You have three seconds to make me care about your brand. If you can’t, I’ll give “0” (zero – zilch – nada) clicks on your Call to Action.

Do you wonder why your Facebook ads don’t convert?  Are you scratching your head over why nobody grabs your free download?  Are your video views averaging 10 seconds or less?

It’s probably a sign you’re not passing the 3 Second Test.

Are you beginning to wonder if anyone really notices you…and then doubt starts creeping in?

“Maybe I’m not cut out for this.”
“Nobody wants to buy my product.”
“I should just give up and go back to my old job.”

What if the problem isn’t you, your business, or your product?

What if it’s all in how you begin, whenever you start talking to your customer?

People buy outcomes

In the first three seconds, your customer doesn’t care about your product, yet.  They’re still focused on their problem and finding someone they can trust to deliver an outcome.

In your marketing, advertising, videos, and elevator speeches…lead with the outcome your brand delivers for your customers.  When you make a connection with your prospect on their level of interest, they’ll stick around to discover more about your product, process, or pixie dust that creates the magic.

When you lead with anything other than your customer’s desired outcome, your marketing conversations tend to sound like this…

(1 Mississippi)  “Hi, my name is…”
(2 Mississippi)  “I’m the founder and owner of…”
(3 Mississippi)  “We’ve been in business for XX years…”

Then, the rush is on.  But instead of heading toward you, they’re running for the door.

Here’s how it looks to begin all of your marketing with a customer-centric, outcome-focused message…

(1 Mississippi)  “Small business owners always seem to be experimenting with their marketing and getting poor results.”
(2 Mississippi)  “Most of them don’t know that a few changes to what they say, and how they share their message, can grow their sales 50% faster.”
(3 Mississippi)  “I love showing small business owners how to make those changes.”

Which way are you leaning now?

Want to know how to add captions to your Facebook video without losing sleep, hair or your cool, in general?

Studies show 85% of videos on Facebook are watched with the sound off.  That means captions are vitally important if you want people to watch your small business marketing videos on Facebook.

You may have researched “how to create a SRT file” – thinking that was the only way to add captions to your videos.  It’s not.

Facebook has voice recognition software that generates captions for the videos you upload directly to their social media site (aka: native videos).

In my experience, VR-generated text is a good start.  I always have to edit the captions to correct for grammar, punctuation and “misheard lyrics.”

This video walks you through the clicks that auto-generate closed captions in the Facebook video editor tool.

This process works the same for native videos you’ve uploaded to Facebook as well as recordings from your previous Facebook Live broadcasts.

Poor timing between bank notes due and Facebook’s algorithm cutting organic reach by 75% has crippled revenue for Little Things, forcing the digital marketing site to shut down.

In the wake of Facebook’s huge black eye over offshore advertisers swaying American voters in the 2016 Presidential Election, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced an overhaul in the social media site’s algorithm, stating:

“…expect to see more from your friends, family and groups…less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media. And the public content you see…should encourage meaningful interactions between people.”
~ Mark Zuckerberg, January 11, 2018

Check out this moment of “meaningful interactions” – exactly what Zuckerberg desires – from a recent Facebook Live broadcast by Little Things.

Refresh_Hospice FB comment and reaction from Maia McCann on Vimeo.

Business Insider columnist Mike Shields has a great article that explains the financial pressure that was building at Little Things…and how Facebook changes were the nail in the coffin.

Whenever regulations tinker with the marketplace, unanticipated results are bound to happen.  Maybe Facebook’s new algorithm will curb “fake news” from Russian propagandists showing up in your news feed, but it has also silenced a beloved source for positive information and entertainment.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

South Florida School Shooting

School shootings, like the Valentine’s Day incident in Florida, seem to be occurring more frequently.

It’s a disturbing trend, and all agree the deaths are tragic. That’s where political opinions in the U.S. begin diverging.  It’s tragic, yes…but what are we, as a government run by the people, to do about it?There is no one singular answer that solves every facet of why someone turns into a mass murderer.  I believe a holistic approach should be sought.  Unfortunately, we typically start seeking answers after it’s too late.

Since this is a media blog, and not a political one, I offer my opinion via Facebook Live.

  • American Psychiatric Association study claims the average American youth witnesses 200,000 violent acts in media by their 18th birthday
  • I believe that number is now low due to the surge in First Person Shooter (FPS) games that has occurred since the study was published
  • Parents must protect their children’s minds by monitoring their media consumption when it comes to violent movies/TV/gaming
  • The Brady Center reports 2 out of 3 school shooters used their parents’ or other close relatives’ weapon to commit a crime
  • Parents must protect their children’s lives (and those around them) by teaching gun safety and value for human life

Journalists are doing their job to report this news incident.  This is a time to be media savvy.  If you have children at home, what are you doing to guide your son or daughter through the fear they may have regarding current events?  Moreover, what are you doing to guide your son or daughter to separate fantasy or fictional violence from criminal acts with very real consequences?

I believe one part of the equation that solves this national dilemma is this:  Parents, let’s stop training our children to be desensitized to killing by allowing them to play FPS video games.  That doesn’t require an Act of Congress, and it’s something we can do until DC gets its act in gear.

What are your thoughts?  Share them here on the blog…or in the comments on my Facebook post below.
