]]>With COVID forcing our shops to open later this year, like many restaurants and small businesses, we looked for ways to innovate and survive. We’ve always wanted to create a Pint Club, and in the age of social distancing, it felt like a natural next step for Black Dog Gelato.
Pint Club is also our way of doing something fun for our loyal customers who enjoy our freshly made gelato and our unique and sometimes unconventional flavors. We wanted to give year-round access without the high overhead of keeping three shops open over the winter when fewer people venture outdoors.
For $35/month, members of Black Dog Gelato Pint Club receive three pints of freshly churned gelato in either our signature, dairy-free, or featured flavors. The featured flavors rotate monthly. Members also receive many great benefits, such as discounts on in-shop purchases and loyalty points, monthly promotions, early access to limited-edition menus, and more.
The bright pink box comes filled with three pints of gelato, free samples/gifts, and recipes from Jess.

In November, as part of our launch, we announced three new flavor collaborations with well-known Chicago brands: Portillo’s Chocolate Cake, Chai Love using Tiesta Tea, and our annual Prop Day flavor with Goose Island, Bourbon County Stout. All three flavors are initially only available through Pint Club.
And if you thought November was sweet, wait until you see what flavors we have planned for December.

]]>The “Pasta Yiayia” features garlic, brown butter, cinnamon, and feta cheese over bucatini. YUM! While our gelato doesn’t have any garlic, our Lula is a creamy base of cinnamon, brown butter, and feta cheese.
Lula will be in our shops for the entire month of July. Make it a theme night. Stop by Lula Cafe for takeaway and then head over to our Logan Square scoop shop for some Lula gelato.

]]>The post What’s the difference between gelato and ice cream? appeared first on Black Dog Gelato Chicago.
]]>Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream but the two do have some differences. Gelato and ice cream are similar in that they both are made with cream, milk, sugar, and eggs (our gelato is made with eggs, not all gelato is). However, gelato uses more milk and less cream than ice cream.
Gelato is creamier, smoother, and silkier, as well as denser and more elastic than ice cream. In the gelato making process, less air is incorporated while churning, which is how gelato achieves its creamy texture with less fat than traditional American style ice cream.
Another difference is the serving temperature. Gelato is served warmer than ice cream, around 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit warmer, which leaves your mouth less numb so you are better able to taste the intense flavors. This is important to us because we create modern and intriguing gelato flavors and want you to really taste them.
We create our gelato using a Northern-style base which is known for being creamy, rich, and tasty. All of our flavors begin with our custom base which is flavored and matured for 24 hours. The liquid bases are then delivered to our two gelato shops, West Loop and Ukrainian Village, for spinning. Once spun, our gelato and sorbets are placed in gelato pans and put in our case ready to be served and eaten!
And just in case you were wondering what sorbet is…
Sorbet, also know as sorbetto in Italian is a dairy and egg-free frozen dessert. When making sorbet, very little air is incorporated during the churning process. Traditionally, sorbets are made with fruits, juices, sugar, and wine or other alcohols. At Black Dog Gelato, we even make a Chocolate Sorbet for anyone who is vegan or who wants to enjoy classic chocolate gelato dairy-free.
