What to know about size, layout, and location before you build

In the last step in your building planning process, it’s time to focus on the fun part, what your building will actually look like. Whether you’re planning for a garage, workshop, commercial building, or barndominium, the features and accessories you choose should be based on how the building will be used. For example, not every building needs overhangs, insulation, electricity, or even windows. Because no two builds are going to be used in the same way, every Cleary building is designed to be customized around your goals rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Popular Exterior and Interior Design Features

Exterior building accessories are more than just doors and windows. Adding features like porches, dormers, eyebrows and even stone or brick accents allow you to create a building that complements your property while meeting your practical needs. Ventilation systems can also play an important role in regulating airflow and helping protect the contents of your building.

Moving inside, there are several finishes and design options that can increase comfort and usability. Insulation and steel liner for the walls and ceiling can help create a more comfortable environment year-round while providing a clean, durable finish. Additional features such as interior deck construction, High Clearance Truss systems, and vaulted ceilings can help maximize space and accommodate larger equipment, vehicles, or storage needs.

The best building designs balance appearance, functionality, and future flexibility, ensuring your investment continues to meet your needs for years to come.

Visualize Your Building with DreamMaker

One of the most exciting parts of the design process is seeing your ideas come to life before construction begins. Cleary’s DreamMaker software allows customers to work alongside a Building Specialist to create and refine their building design in real time.

DreamMaker provides visually stunning interior, exterior, above-ground, and below-ground views, helping you better understand how your finished building will look and function. Verona, WI –Cleary Building Corp., an industry leader in post-frame construction, partnered with Fabral to introduce a new G100 premium steel. G100 galvanized steel features a thicker zinc coating that provides enhanced protection against rust and corrosion. This results in a stronger, longer-lasting panel system built to withstand the demanding environments commonly experienced by pole buildings.

Cleary Building Corp. is committed to offering building materials that provide lasting value and dependable performance for our clients. The development of G100 premium steel strengthens that commitment by providing greater corrosion protection and helping extend the service life of our buildings.

The main features of this new G100 premium steel option:

  • Bare Steel: Fabral uses only 29 gauge, 100,000 PSI nominal tensile strength base structural steel with a minimum .015 thickness before paint to assure you of the thickest, strongest panel in the industry.  UP TO 2.5X STRONGER THAN SOME COMPETITORS 26 GAUGE, COMMERCIAL STEEL AT 40,000 PSI.
  • Galvanization (2 layers): Grandrib 3 plus G100 has up to 1.1 oz of zinc protection as compared to competitors G60 products, resulting in up to 83% more corrosion protection.
  •  G100 contains more zinc (1.1 oz total per square foot) compared to G60 (0.6 oz), which directly correlates to longer, more robust rust resistance in aggressive environments.
  • Zinc Pre-Treatment (2 layers): Prepares the surface for paint while adding additional corrosion resistance.  Many other panels skip this step.
  • Longer Service Life: The thicker zinc layer allows the panel to withstand exposure for a longer duration, reducing maintenance and increasing the lifespan of the steel.
  • Increased Sacrificial Protection: Because zinc acts as a sacrificial anode, a thicker coating (G100) provides more material to protect exposed cut edges and scratches, delaying the onset of red rust better than thinner coatings.

Welcome to the G100 Experience

Quality has many layers, and we are proud our finishing touch is WeatherXL SMP Paint. With this coating your project is built to look sharp on day one—and stay that way for years to come.
G100 zinc coating is the hidden layer that helps your project last. Our premium zinc coating adds a critical layer of corrosion protection to survive the harshest of climates.

What to know about size, layout, and location before you build

When planning a new building, the first step is understanding how it will be used, not just today, but for years to come. Most successful projects start with a clear understanding of purpose. Equally important is defining your budget early in the process. Establishing a general price range helps guide design decisions and ensures your priorities align with what’s realistic. From there, think ahead to future needs. Considering future growth—whether that’s additional equipment, workspace, or storage—can help prevent limitations later on. From there, you can focus on what matters most and begin shaping a building that fits both your needs and your investment.

Evaluate Building Space and Needs

Once you’ve defined how the building will be used, the next step is determining how much space you need and where the building should be located on your property.

Building Size

Start by calculating the space required for the items you plan to store or use inside. Use actual dimensions whenever possible, and don’t forget to account for future additions. A helpful guideline is to total the required floor space and multiply it by 1.15. This provides additional room for clearance and accessibility, giving you a realistic starting point for sizing your building. Height and clearance matter just as much, be sure to account for lighting, heating, and any future interior additions that may take up overhead space.

Keep in mind that storage alone isn’t enough, you also need room to move equipment, vehicles, or materials in and out efficiently. Consider which items will need to be accessed on a regular basis and which ones will be stored for longer periods of time. Our Digital Floor Planner allows you to design your space and provide you with an approximate idea of the building size you might need.

Building Location

The location of your building plays a big role in how functional it will be. Consider how often you’ll use the space and how close it should be to other buildings or work areas on your property.

Accessibility is another key factor. Make sure there is adequate space for:

  • Driveway access
  • Parking
  • Walkways

You’ll also want to evaluate site conditions such as drainage, property layout, and access to utilities. Proper site drainage should direct water away from your building to help prevent standing water. Without proper drainage, even a well-built structure can run into long-term issues.  Taking these factors into account early can help avoid unexpected challenges during construction and protect your investment for years to come.

Finally, leave room for future expansion. A well-placed building should allow for growth without limiting your options later.

Choose a Layout That Fits Your Needs

With size and location established, you can begin planning the layout of your building.

Start by thinking about how the interior space will function. Will an open layout work best, or do you need designated areas for different uses? The goal is to create a layout that supports efficiency and makes everyday tasks easier. Beyond the layout, think about how the building will feel and perform over time. There are a variety of interior finishes options to support your needs including insulation and steel liner packages. Whether you need a heated, well-lit workshop or simple machinery storage, a building that is designed with efficiency and maintenance in mind can save time and costs down the road.

Door and window placement should also be considered early in the design process. Proper placement improves access, natural light, and overall usability. If you’re exploring options, check out our guide on types of doors for farm machine sheds and shops to better understand what might work best for your setup.

Bring it All Together

Once you’ve worked through how the building will be used, where it will go, and how it should function, you’re in a strong position to move forward with design. Now it’s time to add the finishing touches—refining the details, selecting features, and finalizing a plan that brings everything together.

Taking the time to plan upfront ensures your building works for you not just today, but well into the future.

Cleary Building Corp. 2026  and Boys & Girls Club of Dane County Host Steel Wood Univerisyt Construction Camp

Cleary Building Corp. is proud to partner with the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County to host the Steel Wood University Construction Camp.  This 3-day camp gives youth a hands-on introduction to careers in construction. The experience begins at Cleary Building Corp’s headquarters in Verona, WI, where participants learn about the operations, explore career pathways, and tour both the facility and a local job site.

Students with the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County learned about post frame construction and toured a local Cleary Building job site with Field Superintendent Eugene Forseth. Students with the Boys & Girls Club of Dane show off their completed game controller stand.

The camp then moves to the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, where participants completed a small building project. With guidance from staff, participants learn tool use, safety practices, and shop expectations while constructing a game controller stand. After cutting the rough lumber they assembled the project and applied paint. It was an honor to help host such a wonderful group of hardworking individuals.

Key Considerations for Planning a Horse Barn

Planning an equine building involves more than meets the eye. Between choosing the right spot on your property, proper ventilation, and designing your building, a few key details play a major role in creating a space that’s practical, efficient, and comfortable for your horses all year-round.

Determining How Your Equine Building Will be Used

The first step in creating an efficient and comfortable space for your horses is to determine what you will primarily use the building for. Each building use has a different building style that best suits them. Figuring out the exterior style of your building such as a standard gable stall barn, free standing lean, clear span, or elite (monitor) will help you determine the interior layout.

Choosing the Right Location

A key factor in selecting where your building will be built is the natural grading on your property. Placing your new building on a higher spot ensures water drains off and away from your barn and will keep the inside dry and comfortable.

It’s also important to think about the location of your new building relative to all the other buildings on your property. A good question to ask yourself when planning where your building will go is, how will traffic flow from each building to the next? It’s important to think about how far you want your horses to be away from areas like the pasture, round pens, delivery drop offs, and manure areas. This will ensure your existing and new buildings continue to be practical for your day-to-day activities.

Horse Barn Ventilation Considerations

The single most important thing to think about when designing your horse barn, aside from anything that can actually injure the horse, is ventilation. The goal is to provide fresh air into the desired space without making the space drafty. This includes the removal of hot stale air in the summer and moisture, odor, ammonia, and pathogens (dust/mold) in the winter.

A horse is most comfortable between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. In the winter a horse stall should be about the same temperature as outside yet dry with no condensation dripping from the ceiling. In the summer the stall should be the same temperature as outside but feel cooler because it’s shaded from the sun. Utilizing accessories such as eave extensions, eave openings, peak ventilation, louvers, doors and windows will help to ensure adequate ventilation in all climates.

Designing the Interior of Your Horse Barn

The interior of your barn is where your horses will spend a majority of their time, so the design matters. This is the final step to creating a space that’s practical, efficient, and comfortable for your horses. Between your personal knowledge of the day-to-day routine and your Building Specialist’s insight, the completed horse barn will be designed to function exactly how you need it to.

The table below outlines additional design considerations to help shape the interior of your equine building.
