October 29, 2025

Three of Chicago’s leading innovation accelerators – 1871, Current, and the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (IHCC) – today announced the relocation of their offices to a newly dedicated space, provided by and next door to Edelman’s Chicago headquarters. This group reflects a shared vision to create a collaborative hub for innovation, economic growth, and cross-sector partnership across the city and state.

This move reflects a broader shift in how organizations are boldly adapting to change in a post-pandemic world. As cities navigate new workplace norms and downtowns evolve, this relocation represents a forward-looking approach — one rooted in resilience, reinvention, and a shared commitment to building stronger, more connected communities.

“This move is about far more than changing our address – it’s about creating a new model for how cities respond to change,” said Betsy Ziegler, CEO of 1871. “We’re building a space where entrepreneurs, nonprofits, businesses, and civic leaders can co-create solutions that reflect the diversity and ingenuity of Chicago — because when entrepreneurs thrive, cities do too.”

By sharing space with one another – and with Edelman, a global communications firm deeply rooted in Chicago – the three organizations aim to create a civic platform that fosters proximity, innovation, and inclusive entrepreneurship.

“Chicago has always been home for Edelman, and this initiative reflects our commitment to giving back to the city that’s shaped us,” said Amanda Edelman, General Manager of Edelman Chicago. “At Edelman, we believe that creativity and agility are increasingly important in a changing world. This partnership is about thinking differently to catalyze innovation, and helping to bring to life a more interconnected, dynamic future.”

Joining the coalition are:

  • Current, an independent nonprofit innovation hub focused on solving critical water challenges;
  • IHCC, the largest Hispanic business organization in Illinois, dedicated to advancing Hispanic-owned enterprises;
  • 1871, the city’s premier center for digital entrepreneurship and technology.

“As a growing regional ecosystem builder, this opportunity to anchor a new collaborative innovation space comes at a pivotal moment for Current,” said Alaina Harkness, CEO of Current. “Our new home in Chicago will give us a strong foundation as we scale our organization to advance our mission: growing a circular water economy across the Great Lakes region.”

“At IHCC, we truly believe the future of Latino businesses and, really, all businesses, is in technology,” said Jaime di Paulo, President & CEO of IHCC. “That’s why we’re so excited to keep building on our partnership with one of the world’s top tech incubators, 1871. We’re thankful to Edelman, because this partnership doesn’t just benefit us, it strengthens the entire tech ecosystem across Chicagoland and beyond.”

Chicago has long led the way in civic reinvention. By transforming office space into a vibrant innovation engine, this collaboration marks a new chapter – one where government, business, nonprofit, and innovation sectors work together under one roof to solve real-world challenges and provide benefit to all.

For the 18th year, 1871 presented the annual Momentum Awards, a ceremony that recognizes and honors the innovators and companies propelling Chicago’s tech impact forward. The 2025 event took place on September 25, at Morgan Manufacturing in Chicago’s West Loop, and welcomed over 450 attendees, encompassing the city’s top founders, investors, civic leaders, and tech enthusiasts.

From the pre-ceremony cocktail hour to the lively after party that closed the night, the 18th annual Momentum Awards captured the spirit of Chicago’s innovation community and demonstrated how Chicago-based ventures are marking their territory on the global stage.

The evening kicked off in the exclusive VIP lounge, sponsored by FEW Spirits. Before doors opened to the public, the 2025 Momentum finalists, 1871 Board members, C-suite executives, media personalities, and other influential figures gathered upstairs. Guests mingled over a speciality FEW Spirits New York Sour, hors d’oeuvres, and music.

As doors opened to the public, the space filled with energy. Attendees mingled with their fellow tech founders, leaders, and investors, sipping the pre-show specialty drink — an espresso martini sponsored by U3 Coffee — and stepping into the VRAR augmented reality video game. With lounge beats by DJ Tess playing in the background, the crowd eventually settled in their seats, eagerly awaiting the winner announcements.

1871 CEO Betsy Ziegler opened the awards ceremony with an impactful speech on the necessity of Chicago’s innovation community. “It is critical that you keep building,” she said. “Because everything is the way it is today only because people like you had the courage to change the way it was.”

Ziegler also expressed gratitude to the organizations, community members, and friends that offered support after 1871 exited the Merchandise Mart in May. 2025 was a year of massive change for the innovation hub, and the way in which Chicago’s innovation community rallied behind the organization demonstrates the resilience so integral to the city.

The themes of community and character carried throughout the ceremony as 2025 winners were announced and celebrated.

2025 Winners:

Corporate Champion Award: Edelman

Chicagoness Award: Chris Gladwin

Outstanding Tech CEO Award: Felipe Capella

Industry Disrupter Award: PherDal

Social Impact award: Evergreen Inno

Rising Star Award: Pie

Momentum Award winner: ReloShare

CityLIGHTS Award winner: Project44

In addition to honoring this year’s champions, the ceremony created a space to acknowledge 1871’s impact, which has grown to $6.2 billion in capital raised, 2,100 active alumni companies, and 18,700 jobs created. These powerful statistics quantify the importance of the Momentum Awards, which garner both financial and civic support for Chicago’s rapidly growing entrepreneurial community.

What’s a tech celebration without a little fun? Nathan Chester, finalist from Season 25 of NBC’s The Voice, took the stage to perform a special set list and keep the energy high during the awards show. And to close off the evening, attendees enjoyed an after party, featuring dancing, drinks, and dessert.

The 2025 Momentum Awards highlighted the unmatched spirit of innovation in Chicago and celebrated the ventures putting the city on the global stage and driving economic growth.

1871 is thrilled to announce the 2025 award winners of the 18th Annual Momentum Awards — an event that honors and celebrates the best in Chicago tech.

The award ceremony and fundraiser was held at Morgan Manufacturing on September 25, 2025, bringing together hundreds of the city’s most influential founders, investors, and leaders to champion the future of technological innovation.

This year’s eight award winners represent the brightest leaders and companies in Chicago’s tech industry across industries spanning health tech, climate tech, logistics, and social tech.

“The Momentum Awards are about more than recognition — they’re about community,” said Larry Eppley, 1871 Board Chairman and founding managing partner of Sheppard Mullin Chicago. These winners embody the spirit of Chicago: bold, collaborative, and committed to lifting others as they rise. Their success strengthens not only our tech ecosystem, but also the economic fabric of our region.”

“At 1871, we exist to increase the probability of success for founders,” said Betsy Ziegler, CEO of 1871. “The Momentum Awards are a reflection of that mission — celebrating the people who turn sparks into companies, and companies into impact that touches every corner of our community.”

In addition to the award ceremony, the evening included a cocktail reception, dinner, special guest performance from The Voice finalist Nathan Chester, silent auction and raffle, and after party featuring live music.

The energy in the room proved the unmatched spirit of innovation in Chicago. In celebration of the people and companies who are creating a brighter future, the 2025 Momentum Awards was a night to remember.

The 2025 Winners

The first award of the evening is the Corporate Champion Award, presented to a corporation that has made a significant impact in Chicago and across Illinois. Edelman, global public relations and marketing consultancy firm, was honored as the 2025 winner, recognized for their impact both on 1871’s community and the greater Chicago community.

For decades, Edelman has helped tell Chicago’s story to the world — amplifying the voices of entrepreneurs, civic leaders, and organizations that are shaping the city’s future. Additionally, since 1871’s exit from the Merchandise Mart, Edelman has hosted many events for 1871 and other organizations.

Their commitment to community proves the power of a corporation to strengthen the fabric of an entire city.

Chicagoness Award winner: Chris Gladwin

The Chicagoness Award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the values of the Chicago entrepreneurial community and empowers future innovators through civic leadership, mentorship, and the investment of intellectual, financial, and social capital.

The 2025 Chicagoness Award was presented to Chris Gladwin, founder of Cleversafe, which was acquired by IBM in one of the largest deals in Chicago tech history, and leader of Ocient, a hyperscale data analytics company powering the next generation of insights. Beyond his entrepreneurial ventures, Gladwin invests deeply in the future of Chicago’s innovation community, through co-founding p33 to working with organizations like Illinois Tech.

Outstanding Tech CEO Award winner: Felipe Capella

The 2025 Outstanding Tech CEO Award was presented to Felipe Capella, CEO and  co-founder of Loadsmart. This award recognizes a CEO who has successfully scaled their company through outstanding leadership, the ability to attract and retain talented resources, dedication to diversity and inclusion, and the implementation of strategic growth opportunities.

Loadsmart is a logistics company that offers solutions that lower costs, increase efficiency, and digitize transportation. Under Capella’s leadership, Loadsmart has grown to a valuation of $1.3 billion and has garnered the support of major investors around the country. Loadsmart took home the CityLIGHTS Award at the 2024 Momentum Awards.

Industry Disrupter Award winner: PherDal

The Industry Disrupter Award recognizes a company that has developed and introduced a non-traditional, innovative product or service that has significantly disrupted its industry. This year’s award was presented to PherDal, creator of the only FDA-cleared, sterile medical device for at-home insemination.

In 2017, Dr. Jennifer Hintzsche was diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Instead of succumbing to a system of expensive, invasive treatments, she put her experience as a PhD cancer research scientist and biologist into practice. Dr. Hintzsche created the first PherDal kit, and two months later, her daughter was conceived.

PherDal is now helping millions through their safe and successful at-home insemination kits. In 2024, the kit was recognized by Time magazine as one of the best inventions of 2024.

Social Impact award winner: Evergreen Innovations

The Social Impact Award is presented to the technology company that demonstrates a dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion and positively impacts their community on a large scale. Evergreen Inno took home the award this year, recognized for their commitment to supporting startups and entrepreneurs that are creating revolutionary climate technologies.

Structured as a nonprofit, Evergreen Inno pioneered a novel approach to venture capital that aligns philanthropic and corporate contributions to deliver environmental, social, and economic impact. The organization’s portfolio of companies encompasses $500 million raised in funding for solutions in the climate tech innovation space.

Rising Star Award winner: Pie

The 2025 Rising Start Award went to Pie, a social app that makes it easy for friends to connect in real life. Founded by Andy Dunn, Founding CEO of Bonobos, Pie aims to tackle the loneliness epidemic.

By making it easy to discover and RSVP to events, the company’s impact is rooted in its ability to foster real-world connections, build a sense of community, and encourage users to engage with their surroundings beyond a screen.

Momentum Award winner: ReloShare

ReloShare took home the 2025 Momentum Award which recognizes a growth-stage company with the strongest potential to emerge as a market leader. The winner of last year’s Social Impact Award, ReloShare is a software that helps social service agencies secure safe housing for people in need.

Through their hotel booking platform, Safe Stays, agencies can book emergency stays for survivors of domestic abuse, human trafficking, and other vulnerable populations.

CityLIGHTS Award winner: Project44

The CityLIGHTS Award is the final award of the ceremony. It is presented to a late-stage company that has become a category leader through innovation and growth. This year, Project44 took home the award.

Founded in 2014, Project44 provides real-time digital connectivity and data exchange between shippers, carriers, and logistics providers.  The company is now valued at over $2.7 billion and has made a significant impact on the logistics industry by building more resilient supply chains.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Chicago, IL- September 23, 2025

1871, Chicago’s hub for tech innovation, is thrilled to announce that Chris Gladwin, Founder & Executive Chairman of Ocient, Founding CEO of Cleversafe, Chairman of The Forge, and of P33, will be honored with this year’s Chicagoness Award at the 2025 Momentum Awards. The Momentum Awards is 1871’s annual fundraiser that celebrates the innovators driving Chicago’s tech community forward and raises essential funds to support the growth of the city’s entrepreneurial community.

The Chicagoness Award is presented annually to an individual who exemplifies the core values of the Chicago entrepreneurial community — civic leadership, mentorship, and innovative contributions that uplift and strengthen the city’s economy and community. Chris embodies these values through his decades of leading transformative companies, championing civic engagement, and visionary work that has helped build Chicago into a leading global technology city.

Chris’s track record of building infrastructure-defining companies in Chicago is best captured by the founding of Cleversafe, the leading object storage platform for enterprises. The acquisition of Cleversafe by IBM marked the exit of Chicago’s first unicorn core software company. The success of Cleversafe then led to the founding of Ocient, a leading data analytics software solutions company for large data and AI workloads, where Chris holds roles as Founder and Executive Chairman. Beyond creating industry-disrupting organizations, Chris has been a committed civic leader, creating the Chicago non-profit P33, whose mission is to transform Chicago into a tier one technology and innovation hub. His civic commitments also extend to investments in education and talent building, including at The Forge, The Wilder World Trust, Illinois Tech and other organizations that are focused on developing tech talent and providing a great environment for the Chicago-area tech community.

In short, Chris’s impact is woven into the very DNA of Chicago’s innovation community: connecting leaders, mentoring entrepreneurs, and fostering a thriving city for the next generation.

“At 1871, we celebrate the leaders who choose to invest in Chicago’s future again and again,” said Larry Eppley, Chairman of the 1871 Board. “Chris is a visionary builder, civic leader, and community champion who has reshaped the trajectory of our city’s tech community. The magic lies in the way he brings people together, sparks bold ideas, and turns vision into reality—he truly embodies the essence of Chicagoness.”

“Chris’s story is Chicago’s story,” said Betsy Ziegler, CEO of 1871. “He has built transformative companies, co-founded P33, and poured his time and talent into education and civic leadership, but what makes Chris truly special is the force he brings to everything he touches. His energy, imagination, and generosity ripple through this community, and it is a privilege to honor him with our highest individual award.”

“Chicago has always been a city of bold ideas and determined people. That spirit is core to our identity and our future,” said Chris Gladwin, Founder and Executive Chairman of Ocient. “I’m honored to receive this award, and I’m excited to continue working with entrepreneurs and civic leaders to make this city a globally recognized hub of innovation, opportunity, and excellence.”

Chris will accept his award at the 18th Annual Momentum Awards on September 25, 2025, where we will also honor our members who are disrupting their industries, building up their communities, and shaping the future. Stay tuned for more information on our award finalists and be sure to reserve your ticket to join us in celebration.

By Shashank Mahajan, MBA Student at Kellogg School of Management

The pace of technological progress has always been astounding, but this year, it’s been utterly humbling, especially for anyone trying to keep up with AI. The signal-to-noise ratio around AI is not only overwhelming but often biased toward the ‘deep research’ headlines from labs like Anthropic, whose recent work on mapping the “mind” of language models is reshaping our understanding of how these systems internalize concepts [1]. Apple recently published in its research how the reasoning models are bounded by their nature as token predictors – which places an upper limit on how much reasoning they can truly achieve [2]. Other Big Tech are  rolling out ever more advanced models and features — many of which are still months away from real-world use. It’s easy to overlook the quieter, more immediate revolution: how AI is actually being applied across industries today.

While this article does not attempt to uncover every possible AI adoption trend, it focuses on some of the most compelling, high-impact ways AI is being put to work — especially in spaces where operational efficiency, agility, and strategic automation are quickly turning into competitive advantages.

You know it’s the Middle Market when you see the highest AI growth trends

With AI growing exponentially, interesting patterns are emerging specifically in the middle market space. As tech giants rapidly invest in AI, businesses in the middle markets that are utilizing AI for productivity gains are reaping the advantages. These businesses are not just experimenting with AI anymore, they are investing substantially, thus reflecting the belief they have put in the future of AI. The rapid decision making associated with these companies gives us a reason to believe that efficiency in capital deployment stands in stark contrast to the massive, often bureaucratically encumbered technology investments made by larger organizations. With AI democratization, Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are not limited to high quality talent and, instead, can utilize platforms such as Cohere to customize AI for niche use cases, from optimizing supply chains to generating hyper-localized marketing content while maintaining compliance. Research indicates such implementations drive between 27% and 133% of productivity gains in SMEs, particularly in service sectors where streamlined workflows directly enhance competitiveness [3]

Operational improvement is underrated

Flashy robot demos and Sora’s lifelike videos might grab headlines, but AI’s biggest ROI is still in the back office. The AI democratization aligns with broader trends: 60% of SMEs plan to boost AI spending in 2025 and prioritize targeted applications that yield rapid ROI. AI driven service desks, cash flow predictions, and inventory management for carry cost reduction might not sound as sexy, but are helping organizations achieve unprecedented efficiency, accuracy, and cost savings. For instance, on the supply‑chain side, Bendi.ai’s Prism platform pre‑fills vendor questionnaires and flags sourcing hotspots in minutes, collapsing weeks of manual due‑diligence into a dashboard. These frontiers are paving the way for cost centers to transform into strategic assets, with AI orchestrating the emergence of “services as software” in the race to automate administrative workflows [4]. Security is another back‑office cost center quietly evolving into a critical driver of business value. Montréal‑based CyberDefense.ai runs an autonomous, AI‑driven firewall that blocks 98% of common exploits in real time and auto‑generates compliance evidence to eliminate hours of manual rule‑writing and audit prep. Conversations with CEOs on the Industrials side demonstrate a growing interest in employing machine learning for their back-office, day-to-day tasks, which might be as simple as automated invoice generation, or as typical as coming up with pricing strategies for products.

Agentic AI is taking the world by a storm

AI’s edge lies in its ability to not only recommend actions, but also autonomously execute them, transforming decision-making processes across industries. While Large Language Models have been trending since 2022, Agentic AI is having its own moment, especially in 2025. Have you ever wondered what all the Twitter buzz about Model Context Protocol (MCP) has been? Anthropic’s release of MCP [5] marked a defining moment for inter-agent interactions, specifically for tools that, on top of providing recommendations, can now also take actions. Have you ever considered the possibility of outsourcing the task of creating a cart on Instacart [6] based on an ingredient list from ChatGPT? This is where the MCP architecture comes into play, with Agents (like OpenAI’s Operator) orchestrating decision-making to action-taking work so that you can get that extra 10 minutes at the gym (you can only flex until humanoids steal that spotlight).

Startups such as Levee and Oraczen are translating agentic architecture from consumer chatbots to gritty, day‑to‑day operations. Agentic patterns aren’t just for e‑commerce carts as demonstrated by Levee which is innovating hotel operations through data capture using video and audio. Levee’s AI agents augment housekeeping staff by monitoring every guest room during their visits, helping to prioritize issues and take action — whether by reprioritizing housekeeping routes or opening work orders — without needing a manager’s involvement.

What VCs are looking for

With VCs growing wary of startups exaggerating the use of AI to attract funding, Builder.AI being a recent example [7], one space that does get VCs interested may be plain old operational efficiency improvements. Google Cloud posits that leading VCs want AI “integrated into core business functions, automating repetitive tasks to improve operational efficiencies and enhancing decision-making among knowledge workers”. Startups must integrate AI into their core offerings to aid decision-making, extend their runway, and reduce burn rates in uncertain market conditions. AI-powered tools are enabling startups to optimize resource allocation, streamline supply chains, and enhance customer experiences, ultimately boosting profitability and operational scalability. These trends underscore investors’ growing emphasis on startups’ capital management to keep up with the current funding environment [8] [9]

You heard that right! Traditional industries are back

AI is now reshaping industries that may previously have been considered resistant to technological disruption, with Agriculture, Manufacturing and Hard Tech gaining traction. Reactive and preventative maintenance are losing their vigor to predictive maintenance – the new kid in town. The real-time insights from predictive maintenance allow for a far superior maintenance cycle, putting an end to cost inefficiencies and resource wastage while maximizing equipment lifetime [10]. Concepts such as Digital Twins, that primarily found their use case in Aerospace, are further disrupting the Manufacturing industry by analyzing real-time data to perform predictive maintenance, monitor product lifecycle, and identify bottlenecks. 1871’s portfolio startup CropMind is bringing predictive‑maintenance logic to orchards, using AI‑driven computer‑vision twins of each tree to forecast yield, detect disease and guide interventions in real time, saving growers both chemicals and labor. Additionally, platforms such as MetAI are giving a glimpse of AI-powered technology frameworks that use synthetic data to enhance the accuracy of digital twins while allowing manufacturers to fine-tune processes. CEOs in traditional industries have all the right to be wary about AI disruption — they not only need to prepare their teams for widespread adoption, but must become comfortable using AI themselves.

AI in preventative medicine is not losing steam either

For the past few years, classification has been a frontier where healthcare has been adopting machine-learning and AI capabilities for making effective X-rays and ultrasound diagnosis [11]. Much like predictive maintenance for manufacturing, AI is now entering a new territory of prediction in healthcare — a foray into proactive and preventive care [12]. Multiple data sources, including your genetic data, wearable device data and lifestyle data, can be efficiently analyzed by predictive models to make more accurate forecasts about future health outcomes. From prescribing personalized treatment plans for cancer patients, to creating 3D models of a patient’s coronary arteries to identify blockages, startups in healthtech are embracing AI to predict health events before they occur, thus optimizing chronic disease management and reducing healthcare costs.

AI has now invaded every link of the value chain, from the back‑office inbox you dread opening, to housekeeping tasks for hotels. Data‑infrastructure, physical ops, and even deep‑tech R&D are now getting their own purposeful AI layer. AI is transitioning from a fringe innovation to a practical tool increasingly embedded in the core of business operations. The winners will be the leaders who can spot these vertical needles in the AI haystack, deploy them early, and let the flywheel of data‑driven improvement do the rest.

It’s no secret that the logistics and construction industries have changed drastically during the age of Artificial Intelligence. From increased visibility and transparency, to real-time data tracking, to hazard and risk detection, emerging technologies play a major role in how supply chains and buildings are manufactured today. At 1871’s BuildTech Innovation Summit, innovators, industry leaders, and investors from both industries came together to examine developing trends, demonstrate budding technologies, and create impactful connections that will influence the future.

At Accenture Tower in downtown Chicago, this two-day Summit featured keynote conversations and panels, immersive breakout sessions, a pitch showcase, and startup exposition, all designed to spark inspiration and encourage innovation. “That’s what it’s all about, shining a light on the builders and bold thinkers tackling these challenges,” said 1871 CEO Betsy Ziegler during her opening remarks.

Adaptability is Everything

Day one was all about embracing new technology to create stronger systems. Susana Castella, Supply Chain and IX US Products Lead at Accenture, kicked the experience off with a conversation on building resilient supply chains. “Technology can help us understand in real time how the supply chain, or extended supply chain, is performing,” she said. “It used to be a dream, but now it’s actually possible.” She explained that the three largest barriers to a successful supply chain are an inability to scale, a shaky data foundation, and a poor relationship with machines. Continuing this momentum, attendees sat in on two breakout sessions: Agentic AI in the Supply Chain, hosted by GS1, and Learning from Industry: Mapping the Innovation Landscape.

The main takeaway? Survive and adapt. Don’t be afraid to embrace emerging technologies.

Leading, Mentoring, and Funding the Future

The second day of the BuildTech Innovation Summit commenced with a conversation led by D.G. Macpherson, Chairman and CEO of Grainger. He discussed his journey at Grainger, from running the US supply chain to leading the company. “The biggest surprise for me as the CEO has been how much I’ve had to get involved and learn about the technology world,” he said. Macpherson also emphasized the importance of Chicago, which serves not only as a vibrant backdrop for the company, but as an important representation of the strengths and weaknesses of the supply chain industry.

Another highlight was hearing from Brad Feld, co-founder of Techstars, partner at Foundry, and author of multiple books on entrepreneurship. He led a candid conversation about his “Give First” philosophy, centered around the idea of engaging with people and systems non-transactionally. “A startup community has one purpose and one purpose only: to help founders succeed,” said Feld.  He encouraged every attendee to think of one way in which they could help a peer before the Summit’s end. Additionally, he presented signed copies of his newest book, Give First: The Power of Mentorship

The experience concluded with 1871’s Startup Alley where founders exhibited their solutions and potential investors, partners, and customers had the opportunity to learn about the next wave of innovators. Plus, two startups took home an award from the Pitch Showcase, where they pitched their companies to a live audience and panel of judges. Congratulations to this Summit’s winners!

Written by Jack K. Dunn

What are intelligent jobsites and why are they no longer optional for construction companies looking to compete in the modern construction market? Intelligent jobsites are those that leverage real time data, digital twins, and AI/ML to close the gap between the front office and the operation. According to McKinsey, construction productivity improved by only 10% between 2000-2022, vs. a 50% productivity improvement of the total economy and 90% productivity improvement for the manufacturing sector for the same period”. This lack of progress highlights an available opportunity and demonstrates why intelligent jobsites are not optional, but instead, foundational to measuring what have traditionally been lagging indicators, such as jobsite productivity, jobsite costs, project progress, and overall profitability. To be positioned to win in construction, one must understand the reality of how non-tech enabled jobsites are managed, how technology can transform the jobsite, the barriers companies face in adopting this new technology, and finally, what is coming next. Ultimately, whoever solves the disconnected jobsite and closes the gap between the front office and the operation through real time data, AI/ML powered analytics, and digital twins, will win

Non-tech enabled jobsites are plagued by inefficiencies, disconnected data points, miscommunication, and wasted spend. A typical non-tech enabled jobsite functions as follows: project managers estimate budgets and timelines with spreadsheets and phone calls, jobsite superintendents assign work in morning huddles through paper logs or whiteboards, materials and equipment are moved and ordered reactively as they are needed by the superintendent or procurement teams, supervisors track project progress manually with walkthroughs, and lastly, leadership teams in the front office receive weekly or even monthly reports to track jobsites costs, jobsite productivity, project progress, and overall profitability. It is not uncommon for the leadership team in the front office to not even know whether they are making money or losing money throughout the duration of the project.

There is a tremendous opportunity for companies to level up their operation by creating intelligent jobsites, but what does this actually look like? The first gap to be closed to enable an intelligent jobsite is real time data. Real time data is exactly what it sounds like; information that was previously recorded manually, such as project progress, jobsite productivity, material management, and profitability, is tracked continuously. Real time data is exactly what it sounds like; information that was previously recorded manually, such as project progress,  jobsite productivity,  material management, and profitability, is tracked continuously.

This ultimately gives management visibility into key insights and enables course corrections before it’s too late. However, this real time data is only made available through technological advancements, IoT sensors, and OEM integration. The second gap to be closed, once data is being tracked, is making that data visible. Digital twins solve this by transforming real-time data into a live virtual representation of the jobsite. They close the visibility gap by bringing the front office directly to the jobsite, enabling management teams to actively monitor progress, people, and assets in real time5. The third gap to be closed is the synthesis of real-time data and digital twins into actionable insights. This is where AI/ML becomes essential. The massive amounts of data collected from jobsites are not useful unless managers understand what the data means and what actions they should take based on it. AI/ML plays a critical role by identifying patterns, predicting outcomes, and making recommendations that enable management teams to make informed decisions before issues escalate or opportunities are missed.

Real-time data, digital twins, and the use of AI/ML for analysis all help close the gap between the front office and the jobsite, but what barriers are preventing construction companies from executing on their intelligent jobsite dreams, and are there any companies successfully doing it? Pre-existing barriers have made it difficult for many firms to adopt this technology. Most notably, construction jobsites are notoriously fragmented: they almost always involve a mixed fleet of OEM equipment, multiple software platforms, each providing different data points, and several contractors working on the same site.

This variability makes it extremely challenging for one solution to aggregate everything into a single, unified platform. However, several startups have made meaningful progress, and some have gained legitimate traction. One notable example is Virtual Superintendent, a startup based in New Zealand. Acquired by John Deere in 2024 for an undisclosed amount, Virtual Superintendent has gained traction by “using geospatial and satellite data, intelligent machine tracking technology, and cost and production data feeds” to deliver “a clear picture of what’s happening on your site in real time.6” Virtual Superintendent still aims to serve all customers outside of Deere but it has currently only broken into its native New Zealand and Australian markets.

Lastly, what’s next for the intelligent jobsite? As more startups work to solve the challenges of the disconnected jobsite and as construction companies adopt it as part of their long-term vision, it will be critical for firms to invest in platforms like Virtual Superintendent to integrate and unify their data. Beyond investing in tools, companies must also commit to building a data-driven culture, one in which supervisors and employees understand the value of real-time information and actively engage with the systems to unlock their full potential.

In conclusion, intelligent jobsites are no longer optional for construction companies that want to remain competitive in today’s market. To succeed, firms must embrace real-time data, digital twins, and AI/ML to close the gap between the front office and the jobsite. Startups like Virtual Superintendent are helping lead this transformation and companies that want to win must not only adopt these technologies, but actively invest in them as strategic infrastructure.
