The annual competitions in the Midlands and in Cornwall follow the same pattern- teams of 4 pushers propel a large bale of straw (the big round ones) around a set course and the fastest team to reach the finishing line win the contest; two pushers roll the bale, while their colleagues at each end steer it. Apparently a large bale weighs around 200 kilos so it’s quite a challenge, especially when needing to turn corners! The Crantock event has been a fixture for well over quarter of a century while Ashby is a relative newcomer on the scene; both events attract plenty of contestants and onlookers, and I’m guessing that the Ashby event was inspired by Crantock’s example as there are so many similarities. Large sums are raised for local charities at each gathering. Currently, the Crantock event attracts over 100 team entries, while Ashby is just over half the size but it may well catch up as it becomes established over time. The Crantock route is on tarmac between the village’s two pubs, beginning with a shorter course for children, divided into different age groups, and for ladies, followed by the full quarter-mile course for the Open competition. Ashby is on the Avenue Field near the Manor House, beginning with a shorter course for Legends, whose joint age must add up to at least 160 years, and for Ladies, and a longer route for their Open competition in which any age may participate. Times are recorded on a scoreboard, and prizes are awarded for the fastest teams in each category, and for the best dressed competitors. Expect plenty of groan-inducing puns for the team names, for example convicts “on bale”. At Crantock a giant Bale Man is erected to advertise the return of the competition, while at Ashby an enormous Bale Bear is constructed called, appropriately enough, Ashby the Bear. Both events have an abundance of live music and entertainments on offer as well as food and drink. The competitions usually take place on consecutive weeks in early September, following the cereal harvest when plenty of straw is available.

In 2026 it cost £40 per team to enter; spectators may attend free of charge but donations are welcome at the entrance. Plentiful free parking is signposted from the Main Street in the village. History buffs will be interested that the Manor House was home to the Catesby Family, and the Gunpowder Plot plans were discussed in the half-timbered chamber above the gatehouse, where nobody could easily eavesdrop.

The pot leek has been grown and shown competitively for many years, with a stronghold amongst the mining communities of North East England, giving the pitmen some fresh air outdoors in their hard-earned leisure hours. Though some have disappeared from the calendar over the years there are still plenty of them around in which competitors strive to grow the biggest and heaviest examples, often centred around Leek Clubs and Working Men’s Clubs, where members can share tips on the cultivation and care of the vegetables as well as an opportunity to socialise. Rivalry can be intense, partly because the prizes on offer historically were very generous, adding spice to the contest; hopeful horticulturalists have been known to sleep at their allotment or in the garden as show dates approach in order to prevent sabotage by their adversaries. Growers present a stand of two or three of their best specimens, and uniformity and quality as well as size are judged. Most of the shows are held from late August through September, and there are many examples throughout Northumberland and Durham so I’ve given details of my local show here as there are too many to list them all. The Ovington Leek Show is usually held on the first Friday of September (or the last in August) at Ovington Social Club and, though small and relatively low-key, is well over a century old. The leeks are displayed during the evening along with the silverware; the winners are announced and prizes & trophies given out on the night, then the leeks are also exhibited and often auctioned at the Village Show the following day. Notable immense leeks will also be on display at the Malvern Autumn Show which hosts the UK Giant Vegetables Championship (see separate article for more), and at horticultural shows around the country.

There are other leek shows around the country- just do an internet search for “pot leek show” to find more. If you just search for “leek show” you’ll get references to the Leek & District Agricultural Show in Staffordshire, which includes leeks (and much more, including animals, flowers and crafts) but isn’t a dedicated event to the versatile vegetable.

The Greasy Pole is a long-established and well known concept but surprisingly few competitions take place nowadays, with two well-loved contests held as part of the Regatta in each of the two towns of Whitby and Blakeney. The competitions were once common at seaside centres around the British coast but are now scarce, though still a very popular attraction for contestants and spectators alike. The rules are simple: hopeful contestants must proceed along a slim horizontal wooden beam which is covered in a slippery substance (traditionally lard), with the aim of retrieving a flag at the end. The difficult part is avoiding sliding off into the waters beneath, and most competitors end up taking a dip into the depths below, to the delight of the assembled crowd. The Whitby event was a staple in the calendar for many years, though it stopped in 2015 and was newly revived in 2026, while Blakeney’s event has been a fixture annually for well over a hundred years (barring pestilence and warfare). The 30-foot-long Blakeney pole is suspended from the side of a barge, while at Whitby the 37-foot pole is set up at the Fish Pier and in both cases the challenge takes place at High Tide so that while the contestants will get a drenching in the water when they almost inevitably plunge into the drink, happily they should survive the experience. Potential pole-walkers should bear in mind that their attire will suffer from wet and mud as well as the sticky lubricant on the pole!

Anyone can have a try, and there are prizes for successful pole-walkers. Both events take place as integral parts of their respective Regattas, which each have a range of other maritime themed attractions and sailing competitions. Admission is free.

In medieval times, an integral part of the elaborate pageants held in the city of Norwich was Snap, an appropriately named dragon with hinged jaws associated with the Guild of St George. Snap appeared in civic processions and on St George’s Day from the fourteenth century onwards, and today a modern equivalent performs the same function to the delight of the crowd. He can be found with his attendant Whifflers, Dick Fool and Standard Bearers at a number of events around the year; he always appears on St George’s Day, when Snap battles with and is defeated by a Bishop, and he can be found at the head of the enormous Lord Mayor’s Procession in July. Snap is often foiled making attempts to enter the Cathedral (he is associated with the Devil and thus barred from holy places) and may sneakily remove hats from heads, causing fun and mayhem wherever he goes.

Two events you can count on finding Snap attending are St George’s Day (23rd April) and at the Lord Mayor’s Weekend in the procession on a Saturday in July, as well as events like the Royal Norfolk Show.

Gatherings don’t only happen in the Highlands, and the event at Annan is a good example of a lowland version, with a Parade of the local Clans with their flags, pipes and drums, historical re-enactments and living history from a variety of historical eras, music and a variety of entertainments and sports. As a relatively small-scale new event in the calendar, it’s likely to evolve over time and has moved location a couple of times but now seems settled on the school playing fields, which provide a good venue for the arena events while close to convenient parking and transport facilities. It’s the centre of the Annan History Town’s Summer Festival and it takes place annually at the end of August. There are arts, crafts and food stalls, displays such as falconry, terrier racing and extreme cycling, story-telling, bouncy castles and more to keep the whole family entertained for the afternoon.

Brixham in Devon is the site of King William III’s unopposed landing on English soil with his Dutch army in the Glorious Revolution of 1688; William of Orange and his wife Mary deposed Mary’s Catholic father James II, ensuring that the Crown remained a Protestant monarchy. A statue of William marks the spot, and today a parade and special service take place on a Saturday near to the anniversary on 5th November, organised by the Plymouth District Loyal (Orange) Lodge who have commemorated the event for a century. The ceremony took its current form around 25 years ago; Remembrance wreaths are laid at the Cenotaph and on the plinth of the statue and the procession of Orangemen is accompanied by flag-bearers and musicians including a flute band, after which there is a religious service at the Statue.

In 1536 on 19th of May, Queen Anne Boleyn was executed at the Tower of London, the first Queen of England to be beheaded. A French executioner struck off her head with a sword, on the orders of Henry VIII after a trial in which she was convicted of high treason, with charges including adultery and incest. She’s long been a character of great fascination and is the subject of numerous books, films, tv shows and plays and she’s remembered on the anniversary at both her place of execution and at Blickling Hall in Norfolk, which was one of the residences of the Boleyn family and is believed to the Anne’s birthplace. Roses are delivered annually to the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula inside the Tower, where her corpse was summarily laid to rest, and are also laid outside on the monument that marks the spot where the beheadings of Anne and some other high status prisoners took place in the comparative privacy of the Tower grounds. For a long time, the source of the Chapel posy was cloaked in mystery but apparently it’s been solved as it’s distant relatives who arrange their delivery. Blickling Hall, now a National Trust property, has a costumed procession along the drive, performed by the Living History team and of course featuring Anne herself and others in Tudor attire.

Saint Margaret of Scotland was the Queen of Malcolm III; she’s known as the Patroness or Pearl of Scotland, and is the only female Scottish saint. Born into the English Anglo-Saxon royal family, the House of Wessex, in circa 1045, she influenced her husband to reform the church in Scotland, established the religious house at Dunfermline, performed numerous charitable works and established a boat service over the Fourth of Forth to assist pilgrims (the settlements she founded are still named North and South Queensferry in her honour). St Margaret’s Cave is where she withdrew to pray privately, and now visitors may descend steps into the hillside from a small building in the Glen Bridge carpark to the little cavern with a statue of the saint at prayer. Margaret was buried at Dunfermline in 1093. In recognition of her important role, charitable works and piety, she was canonised in 1250 and her feast day is celebrated on 10th June each year; Pilgrimages began in the same year , when Margaret’s sacred remains were translated to their new resting place in the Abbey Church at Dunfermline. Today, the Pilgrimage begins with the Angelus at St Margaret’s Cave and continues with Prayers at her tomb at the Abbey and a procession to the St Margaret Memorial church, followed by Mass with the Archbishop and priests of the Diocese. The procession includes dignitaries, clergy and pupils from the local schools as well as the Saint’s relics ( a shoulder bone housed in an elaborate reliquary which normally resides in the Memorial Church, and is processed under a protective pallium) and is led by a pipe band.
