I started all three cards the same way. I stamped the Heirloom Mum right onto the scripty patterned paper, then added ink blending around the edges to age it and pull in more of those warm fall colors. A little gold watercolor splatter finished off each panel. From there, I changed up the layout for each card.
Distress Ink Colors: Aged Mahogany | Wild Honey | Walnut Stain
For this one, I cut the mum panel with a Deckle & Stitches die and stamped the sentiment in the corner. Then I used the Edge Appeal dies to cut 2.75 x 5.5 inch strips from the Autumn Archives papers and layered them at an angle. I love these straight-edge dies because they add a fun edge and coordinate with so many of Unity’s nesting dies. I popped up the mum panel, added a string bow, and called it done. Those layered fall patterns are my favorite part.
For this one, I wanted a peek of those fall papers to show, so I cut two extra Deckle & Stitches rectangles and stacked everything together. I love how the pretty patterns peek out around the mum. It gives the whole card a deeper, warmer feel.
I popped up the mum panel, wrapped and tied some string into a bow, then added the stamped and die cut sentiment. This one feels a little more layered and cozy to me. It all comes together with the ink blending that pulls those colors into the center panel.
For this last panel, I wanted to do something a little different, so I partially fussy cut around the mum. I love how that cutaway edge brings a little drama to the card and gives you a peek at the pretty paper underneath.
I popped the panel up over two layers of patterned paper, then added the stamped and die cut sentiment with a string bow. The warm colors keep everything soft and comforting, which compliments the sentiment perfectly.
I love how different these three cards feel even though they all started with the same stamp and papers. The layered backgrounds, stacked edges, and that dramatic cutaway each gave the Heirloom Mum a totally different look. This is exactly why I love stretching one stamp set into more than one card.

I love using a large background stamp as the main focus of a card. I stamped and heat embossed Acorn Almanac in white, then blended those rich fall colors right over the top. Watching the leaves and acorns appear through the ink is one of my favorite parts of emboss resist, and I really liked how those deeper colors felt for a sympathy card.
Distress Ink Colors: Pine Needles | Wild Honey | Seedless Preserves
I die cut the embossed panel and added the sympathy sentiment in the same color as I used in the blend. I love how the simple layout lets those rich colors pop against the white background. A few gold watercolor splatters added just enough shimmer and adds to the rich autumn feel.
This one uses the same techniques, but I changed the placement of the stamp and sentiment color for a slightly different look. I like that the cards share the same idea without feeling exactly alike. Making both at once was easy and now I have some sympathy cards ready for when I need one.
Emboss Resist Tips for Better Results
- Prep the cardstock first: An anti-static powder tool helps keep stray embossing powder from sticking where you do not want it.
- Give the stamp good coverage: With a large background stamp, make sure the embossing ink reaches the entire design before adding the powder.
- Heat until the powder turns smooth: Move the heat tool around the panel instead of holding it in one spot too long. Once the powder melts and looks smooth, move on.
- Blend right over the embossing: Once everything is cool, add ink directly over the embossed design. The white embossing resists the ink and lets the stamped design show through.
- Wipe away leftover ink: After blending, lightly wipe over the embossed areas with a dry soft cloth or paper towel. It cleans off any ink sitting on top and brightens the white embossing again.
I really love how these turned out, especially with those rich fall colors against the white embossing. Emboss resist is such a simple technique with beautiful results. Is emboss resist one you use often, or one you need to pull out again?

]]>The post Wicked Good Halloween Cards + A New Color Inspo appeared first on dahlhouse designs.
]]>Then there were the cardstock colors in the kit. Purple, coral, and bright green are definitely not where I usually go for Halloween. But that is exactly why I liked them. And now that I look at them, they have the movie Wicked vibes too. This combo became my new Wicked Pop Color Inspo Swatch and gave me the starting point for two very different Halloween cards.
I have a fresh Color Inspo Swatch for you today with wicked tones that pop! You’re welcome to give it a whirl in your own cards.
These kits have been so popular each month that they tend to sell out quickly. Due to their popularity, Hero Arts now has a WAITLIST option to Save Your Spot for when these sell out. It is your best chance at getting dibs on next month’s kit. All the details can be found on the kit links.

The cauldron and witch hand are where this card started. I loved the idea of our spooky witch brewing up something wicked and dropping a few questionable ingredients into the pot.
Then I had to figure out the background. My first thought was having the orchid rectangle layered over a mulberry background, but nope. That was way too matchy-matchy. I switched to a black card base and added the ink blended glow behind the cauldron. That was it. The whole card suddenly had the moody, mysterious feel I wanted.
I love how the dark hand and cauldron look against that glow. The purple, coral and green bubbles are especially fun because they are so unexpected for Halloween. And those tiny spiders being dropped into the brew make me ridiculously happy.
Everything on this card is die cut, even the sentiment. Isn’t that fun?
I knew I had to use the adorable little frog in this kit. I just had no idea what to do with him. I thought about dropping him into the cauldron, but I couldn’t do that to the little guy. He looked much more like a sidekick than an ingredient.
So meet Jinx. He’s hanging out under the witch’s hat and keeping it safe while she’s busy stirring things up.
Once I tucked Jinx under that hat, I really didn’t want the card to need much else. I kept the rest clean and simple with the BOO! sentiment and a few magical black dots around him. Carly Tee’s style inspired me to try drawing the dots with a Micron pen in different sizes to give them a splattered look. I’m definitely more comfortable with splatting paint and this is going to take more practice to get that random sparse look. I feel like I added too many this time but it could have been worse if I kept going!
I love that the same color palette took me in two completely different directions. The cauldron got all the moody Halloween drama, while Jinx was perfectly happy keeping things simple.
Are you a Halloween person, or do you mostly skip it?
We live right on the edge of a big neighborhood and somehow only get about ten doorbell rings. Meanwhile, the other streets are packed with kids. Apparently our little street is just too scary. It may be just Jinx and me hanging out together that night.

The little mouse from Mice & Cozy was too cute not to use for a sweet hello card. I stamped him on cardstock and watercolored him with Distress Watercolor Pencils. If cardstock makes you nervous with watercolor, just switch to watercolor paper. There really are no rules here.
Distress Pencil Colors: Iced Spruce | Saltwater Taffy | Evergreen Bough | Pine Needles | Rusty Hinge | Wild Honey | Lumberjack Plaid | Tumbled Glass
That soft peachy pink patterned paper felt a little unexpected for fall, which is exactly why I liked it. It still has that changing season feel. Plus, it makes his tiny teal sweater pop. I embossed it with a leafy embossing folder and lightly sanded the raised areas. It brought out the texture and gave the background a subtle distressed look.
I finished the card with a few opal iridescent sequins for a little movement and shine. They were the perfect tiny detail. The whole card still feels sweet, dainty, and cozy.
I really love how sweet this one turned out. That soft peachy pink was such a fun change for fall. The little bit of sanded texture gave the background just enough interest too. Sometimes it’s nice to keep things simple and let one little stamp steal your heart.

I loved the idea of this little reindeer driving around in his reindeer car with a pile of presents behind him. I started with one of my favorite non-traditional holiday color combos, teal, pink, and red, then pulled in a few more bright colors for the gifts. It gave this tiny card exactly the playful Christmas feel I wanted.
The shaped card base is surprisingly easy. I folded white cardstock in half, then positioned the car die with the left edge hanging slightly past the fold so that part wouldn’t cut. That leaves the fold intact and turns the die cut into an actual card base. Once all the colorful car pieces are layered over the front, you don’t even notice where that fold is hiding.
Colorwheel Cardstock Colors: Teal Topaz | Anchor | Classic White | Raven | Breeze | Pomegranate | Fawn | Truffle | Blush | Tutu | Dahlia | Peridot
One of my favorite little details is that MERRY license plate. I colored behind each letter with markers before adding the white plate over the top, so each letter has its own pop of color. It is such a small detail, but on a card this size those little touches are extra fun.
Copic Colors: BG15 | YG03 | Y02 | RV23 | R35
Inside, I ink blended a little blue on the back window before popping it in place. Then added the reindeer and presents, which brings the design to the inside. Since the window detaches from the die cut, having the presents and reindeer glued to it will hold it in place. I love that you still get a cute little scene when the card opens, plus a sentiment tucked underneath.
There isn’t room for a long message, but that is exactly why I like it for a gift. Add a little note, tie it onto the package, and the card becomes part of the wrapping.
I love how this tiny card turned out, and now I’m looking at my larger dies a little differently. Shaped cards are such a fun way to stretch what you already have, especially when you need a little something to add to a gift.

I went with bright Halloween colors for this one, and the purple and teal almost remind me of Mardi Gras. Somehow that just feels right for him. I can imagine Sir Skeleton from New Orleans for some reason. I used the Color Block Accent Rectangles to frame him and kept the rest of the layers simple.
Colorwheel Cardstock Colors: Blue Spruce | Violet | Raven | Peridot
I kept his head and body separate so only the lower half moves. His head is popped up with foam tape, which leaves enough room underneath for his body to swing. The small spinner fits perfectly at the top of the body, and that little side-to-side movement is exactly what I wanted.
I also needed the sentiment to be much smaller for this layout, so I partially die cut the “BOO” from the sentiment die. Then I used the smallest tab die from the Color Block Accent Rectangles set to cut it into a tiny rectangle. This is a great way to stretch your sentiment dies when they are too long to fit your space.
This little guy makes me laugh every time I see him move. The spinner gave me exactly the little side-to-side BOO-gie I pictured when I first saw him, and those bright purple and teal layers just fit him. Honestly, I think he turned out even more fun than I imagined.

There is also a quick video so you can watch it all come together.

The patterned paper really set the tone for this card. I pulled the corals, blues, and soft green into the Copic coloring, which helps it blend well with the colors of the background. This little guy didn’t take much for coloring either. It came together really quickly.
Copic Colors:
Covering the entire card with patterned paper made the snail feel too small, so creating the smaller background gave him more room to stand out.
I used the new Scallops & Ovals die to create the hill, then trimmed it with the postage die so it fit the card better. That simple change made the whole scene work, and it is an easy way to stretch dies beyond their original shape. The die-cut sentiment and tiny clay hearts finished everything off without slowing down this already-late birthday card.
I used a little bit of the scraps from the die-cut layers to decorate the inside with the ‘Happy Birthday’ from Gotta Love Sentiments. You’ll have to check out the video for a peek at that!
This card came together quickly, but the mix of patterned paper, die-cut shapes, and those tiny hearts still gave it plenty of personality. Perfect for those last-minute got to get it in the mail now kind of cards.

I mean, a tiny row of colorful books on a little shelf? How cute are they? I kept this first card very clean and simple so those books could be the focus. I almost made the shelf white, but the pink gave it a little more pop and added just the right amount of sweetness. The tiny heart and sentiment underneath finished it off without making the card feel too busy. It would be fun to do this one again in a completely different color palette in moody colors for those that like murder mysteries.
For the second card, I stepped things up with a little masking and covered the background with overlapping library checkout cards. Stamping them in rainbow color made that pile so much more fun. Since the background already had plenty going on, I kept the sentiment simple and added only the tiny heart and paperclip. That little paperclip might be one of my favorite details. I kinda want a whole care of them now.
The third card has the most going on, mostly because there was a whole lot of die cutting and layering involved. The row of colorful bookmarks along the bottom was such a fun place to start, and then I layered the flowers over top. I love that you can still see all those little bookmark shapes peeking out underneath. It turned into such a sweet, dreamy birthday card for someone who loves a good page turner.
It was so much fun playing with this kit. Each card is using some of my favorite little things in a fun and easy way. Which idea would you be most likely to try, a clean little shelf, a stamped background, or a layered scene?

The tree layers were all cut from watercolor paper first, which helped me plan the color placement and keep a defined edge around each layer once the water was added. I used a mix of ink blending and direct-to-paper color so each layer stayed bright and defined, but still blended into the next. That balance kept the forest from turning into one solid block of color.
Distress Ink Colors:
The water is what gave everything that loose faux watercolor look. A little ink block stamping added the darker pooled areas and those uneven edges that make the color feel less controlled in the best way. This is such a fun way to get a painted look without needing to paint each layer by hand.
The sun sitting partly outside the circle was the little design choice that made the card feel finished. It adds something unexpected on that side and balances the hello sentiment below. The white paint splatters were the final touch, adding just enough texture across all those bold layers without covering up the color.
I love how all that bright ink and water gave these layers a watercolor look without any actual painting. The color stayed bold, the tree layers kept their definition, and that little sun outside the circle was just the right finishing touch.
Which part is your favorite, the sunset colors or all that inky texture?
