Club Kultur Bestand Aufnahme

on the Object Stage

23 Jul – 9 Nov 2026

Discussion October 8, 2026: Art historian Lukas Fuchsgruber, cultural anthropologist Bianca Ludewig and Rosa Räthel of former Mensch Meier discuss methods and critical potentials of researching and preserving subcultural networks and communities, on archiving communities.

Clubs are cultural venues, subcultural habitats, and safe havens. Clubs are temporary autonomous zones and sites of escapism. They can break open social norms; they are fleeting, physical, and communal. In clubs, people form relationships with one another and negotiate rules. In clubs, people work. Clubs are both a heterotopia and an economic factor.

In recent years, the awareness of club culture has shifted — not least due to the growing threat facing many clubs. Berlin’s techno culture has been recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage, club culture is now the subject of academic research, and digital archives are emerging. This is where the presentation Club Kultur Bestand Aufnahme takes its starting point.

The Berlin club Mensch Meier serves as an example and source of material here. After its closure, Mensch Meier handed over a collection of materials to the Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge for inclusion in its holdings. The resulting presentation shows various approaches to preserving club culture. At the same time, it understands itself as an attempt to bring club culture into the museum space.

At the heart of Club Kultur Bestand Aufnahme is the question: can club culture be collected, documented, and exhibited? And if so, how?

Shortly after the closure of the Berlin club Mensch Meier, I offered the collective a day to interview people from the former team, employees & co-creators from Mensch Meier in order to preserve their still vivid memories. These interviews can be listened to in a listening station in the Museum der Dinge as part of the Club Kultur Bestandsaufnahme.

May 11th 2026 – hybrid book launch event: Cambridge Companion to Electronic Dance Music https://bl.wiseup.de/cambridge-companion-electronic/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/cambridge-companion-electronic/?lang=en#respond Thu, 16 Apr 2026 20:09:33 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=4977 Read the full article...]]> On 5th of March The Cambridge Companion to Electronic Dance Music was finally published.

It was edited by Hillegonda Rietveld – Professor Emerita at London South Bank University. She has published extensively on electronic dance music cultures, and Toby Young – Professor of Composition at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Research Lead in Digital Performance.

Contributors:
Beate Peter, Catharine Rossi, Caspar Melville, Kai Fikentscher, Bianca Ludewig, Stefanie Alisch, Matthew Ming-Tak Chew, Tobias C. van Veen, Bernardo Attias, Chris Christodoulou, Rupert Till, Botond Vitos, Maria Perevedentseva, Nicolas Bougaïeff, Robert Fink, Tami Gadir, Samantha Parsley, Edward Katrak Spencer, Alice O’Grady, Alinka Greasely.
My chapter deals with “Party as protest: Free Party, teknivals, early rave scenes and Berlin’s hardcore techno”.

On 11th of May there will be a hybrid launch event, held in London at Guildhall and online, 5-6pm (BST).

Here are the details if you want to join:

And here is the publishers blurb:

“Electronic dance music is increasingly the focus of a multitude of academic research projects around the world but has been drastically under-represented in accessible core published material. This innovative scholarly collection provides an important ‘first stop’ for researchers and students wishing to work in this area. It examines the key features of numerous electronic dance music scenes and (sub)genres alongside discussions of the musical, social and aesthetic experiences of participants to consider how these musical practices create purpose and cultural significance for millions around the world. At the same time, it introduces diverse theoretical approaches to the understanding of electronic dance music cultures and addresses the issues and debates in electronic dance music culture studies. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach drawn from both music and cultural studies – including music aesthetics, technologies, venues, and performativity – from a broad geographical perspective, the volume sheds fresh light on electronic dance music cultures.”

– Provides a thorough overview of the rich variety of cultural, social, spatial and technological contexts of electronic dance music

– Considers how the musical, cultural and spatial practices of EDM create purpose and cultural significance for millions around the world

– The first scholarly collection to offer an introduction to diverse approaches in the understanding of electronic dance music cultures

Excerpt from preface by Hillegonda Rietveld:
“Though associated with nighttime dance parties and clubs, electronic dance music has saturated many aspects of contemporary culture. We hear it in adverts and shops. Even some restaurants employ a DJ to play dance music, although people are seated to eat and are unlikely to get up for a boogie. According to Google’s Ngram viewer, the term ‘electronic dance music’ has been used historically since the 1980s and gained popularity during the 1990s as an umbrella term for dance genres such as house music, techno, trance, gabber, hardcore rave, jungle/drum and bass, and UK garage, each in some rhizomic manner indebted to 1970s disco music and mixed on the way with other influences, from reggae to rock and much in between. Then, just after the year 2000, as forms of electronic dance music and associated venues, festivals and internet sites proliferated around the world, the term rapidly took on its own momentum both in the English language and globally, including in Chinese and Spanish. Not surprisingly, both journalistic and academic publications on the subject have appeared from the mid-1990s onwards, while open access journal Dancecult has dedicated itself since 2009 to the study of electronic dance music cultures. Along the way, electronic dance music seems to have become a catch-all for a range of disparate forms of dance music, held together by their electronic sonic palette and shared histories of genre cross-fertilisation across localities.

Close to 2010, there was an American music industry effort to reimagine rave cultures for marketing purposes. The aim was to remove negative connotations generated during earlier moral panics around the intensity of rave dance parties that solidly focussed on electronic dance music. They used the abbreviation e.d.m. to promote dance festivals with a pop-flavoured form of electronic dance music, which has since become known as ‘edm’. As this subgenre became popular amongst American teenagers, some confusion emerged with those for whom electronic dance music had long been understood as an umbrella term. The dual meaning of edm is where Toby Young and I, as editors, found ourselves when we started to compile our Cambridge Companion to Electronic Dance Music. Our decision was to offer a broad set of perspectives that cross disciplines and geographical places, with the understanding that there is no stable point of origin, nor a single cultural meaning to electronic dance music. We thereby wanted to avoid encyclopaedic narratives that repeat the marketing myths of individual careers. Instead, our Cambridge Companion offers a broad scope on the subject, from raves, sound systems and club design to issues in production techniques and DJing. In doing so, the collection presents a spread of local positions, not only from the US, UK, and Germany (as per usual) but also from countries like Italy, China, and Angola, as well as approaches that address identity politics in the studio and on the dancefloor. In all, an enticing compilation for you to want to find out more.”

The upcoming year is going to be a challenge for many initiatives!
Currently, St.Marx is up against a mega event hall by Eventim. There should be a focus on small and regional reciprocity instead of the hypercapitalist „make it mega“ approach. Let’s claim a city for and of commons – a city for all! https://stmarx.wien/

The city is spending millions of Euros on projects that endanger our livelyhood and now wants small initiatives e.g. like the Amerlinghaus “in times of budgetary constraints” to work not badly paid but better for free. The Amerlinghaus does important work and hosts many initatives like 4lthangrund and the city asks them “to also establish a stable economic foundation.“ Hahaha. Welcome to the neoliberal city.
https://amerlinghaus.at/

Similarly affected by the current budget cuts is Radio Orange. The self-organized city radio, where several groups of the culture center also run radio shows is suffering severe budget cuts of 60% and will be further cut by 2027. Independent Radios and initiatives that foster media literacy are more needed than ever to strengthen the multiplicity of voices and togetherness in solidarity.
https://o94.at/

Add the loss of additional „geringfügiges Einkommen“ while unemployed, cuts in the social sector, and many more capitalist, patriarchal, and racist bullshit society has to offer – happy new crisis.

Come by 4lthangrund to collectively start this new year with a blast 🚀

For a city for all!

★ Dana Schechter & Paul Wallfisch

Even if you’re unfamiliar with the names Paul Wallfisch and Dana Schechter there’s a very good chance you’ve heard their work over the last few decades. The former lives in New York, and the latter resides in Berlin, and they’ve both spent time touring and recording with SWANS, but each artist has pursued wildly diverse careers, toggling between sounds of ferocious brutality and tones of meditative serenity. Wallfisch has played in bands like Firewater and Little Annie, while Schechter has logged time with American Music Club, Angels of Light and her own Insect Ark, among others. They’ve been friends since meeting in New York in the 1990s. Years later they forged a stronger connection as bandmates in Botanica. Over the years Paul Wallfisch has been a prolific composer for film and TV, including Dummy, with Adrien Brody and Milla Jovovich (which the musician also appeared in). After spending years splitting her time between New York and Berlin, Dana Schechter settled in Berlin in 2020 and is currently a fix member of Swans. They renewed their artistic partnership in 2021, when Paul invited Dana to Vienna to help him develop the music for a multimedia theatrical spectacle called Die Politiker written by Kleist prize winner Wolfram Lotz. The music from the production provides the foundation for the duo’s first album, The Heart of A Whale.

Across its six intense tracks one can detect a subtle homage to storied Berlin musical traditions, as the pair puts a raw, often brutal veneer on songs steeped in Weimar cabaret (a la Tom Waits) but updated with a visceral mixture of noise, post-punk, and industrial elements. Performed on a panoply of instruments from bass, organ and lap steel to SOMA Synths, Guitaret, a variety of electronics and a grand piano hammered with a shoe, the music reflects the New York-Berlin nexus they’ve both been part of for decades. Echoes of Swans, Einstürzende Neubauten and The Birthday Party, but also hints of Throbbing Gristle, Eno and even William Basinski and Michael Gordon. The music can’t be contained by any single tradition, with a decidedly experimental bent that ruptures the fixed rhythm of rock for something more theatrical and emotionally harrowing.

“These 2 beautiful exiles travel limbic landscapes and underwater dreams with a map that disintegrates instantly when viewed. Their fractured sounds dissolve and reconfigure endlessly in our cochlea and infest our imaginations with spiked armies of ultra-vivid, sentient and carnivorous coral predators, atavistically intent on devouring the sweet meat hiding deep in the center of the amygdala.” ~ Michael Gira (SWANS)
“Multi-colored prisms of mysterious tones bask in an Americana sunspot storm.” ~ Larry Mullins (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds)

★ Silvervest : Zombik & Caloia

Silvervest is the duo project of Nicolas Caloia and Kim Zombik that plays in the field of improv, storytelling, soundscapes, and jazz. Intimacy is at the heart of Silvervest’s vibrant and melodic music, toggling between swagger and sweetness, caressing and careening. Their music remains unset and generous. The duo intuitively explore the nuts and bolts of humanity’s mortal coil while remaining open to all possibilities.

“In terms of inventive new concepts with historical roots, Montreal’s Silvervest – being the duo that is poetess Kim Zombik and bassist Nicolas Caloia – cooks up a sound that is savory,
witty and flecked with surprising twists, with hints of Abbey Lincoln, Billie Holiday and hip-hopping post-beat poetry. Stir and enjoy.” ~ Josef Woodard – Downbeat, May 9, 2024

★ Sebastian Bauer : Past/Fear

The Vienna based sound designer and composer for dance and performance pieces conceived a new form of musical approach.
The simple gear (a mixing console and a digital effects processor) is turned into an instrument as such through performative action. Left unused for several years they collected dust which enables them to live a life on their own. Like outdated ideas for todays challenges come crashing in our present time the background noise of the console works its way through the hall unit like through a megaphone. Going into overdrive and feedback until the digital effect processor is overloaded and it begins to simulate the remoteness of war or the brutal intensity of torrential rain.

It took more than a decade to realise the project, from the initial idea to publication.

Blurb:
This book illustrates and conceptualises a new festival format – transmedia festivals. These have become increasingly established in major European cities since the 2000s and present works by an artistic avant-garde that have emerged from both art music and experiments in pop and club culture, at the intersection of art, music and technology. This volume highlights the fascination of these hybrid art forms and impressively analyses the multifaceted challenges and efforts of their protagonists in an increasingly economised cultural sector. The result is a multifaceted portrait of art and cultural work and its interweaving with the transformation processes of the present.

Museums are social spaces. The way they stage, position, and communicate history and heritage is inherently political – and often contested. In recent decades, critical voices have increasingly called for reflection on provenance, power structures, and representation. But how does the power of museums shift when they intersect with digital information systems and the internet? How do strategies of knowledge dissemination, historical interpretation, inclusion and exclusion, and the (in)visibility of social structures transform in the context of digitization? Lukas Fuchsgruber’s new book explores these questions and links the discourse on museums as societal spaces with the politics of data. The book emerged from the collaborative project Museums and Society – Mapping the Social (2020–2024), funded by the Berlin University Alliance.

About the author:
Lukas Fuchsgruber is an art historian. He worked as a research associate at the Technische Universität Berlin and held positions at museums in Nuremberg and Berlin. His research focuses on digitization in museums, photo archives, and the economics of art. He has contributed to several open source software projects for digital archives (cooArchi, Art Doc Archive). Since 2025, he has been part of the Open Cultural Data team at Wikimedia Deutschland.

The presentation by Lukas Fuchsgruber will be followed by a panel discussion with Anna Schäffler, Yann LeGall and the author, which I will moderate. This is wonderful as they all do very crucial research!

September 13th 2025 – OFF THE RADAR Festival Hamburg w/ Jukebox Utopia https://bl.wiseup.de/festival-hamburg-jukebox/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/festival-hamburg-jukebox/?lang=en#respond Tue, 09 Sep 2025 13:53:46 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=4783 Read the full article...]]> The OFF THE RADAR Festival, organised by Hamburg’s Hafenklang collective and their fellows, will this time take place as a decentralised event at various subcultural venues across Hamburg. It’s the perfect opportunity to get to know the city and its musical subculture, as well as to experience a number of international acts over four days – from 11th to 14th of September 2025.

You can find the lineup and more infos here:

https://radar.offtheradar.net/de/attendees/events

“Since the first OFF THE RADAR saw the light of day in New Zealand, we have not only significantly reduced our ecological footprint; by not organising any events for years, we have now almost offset the climate damage we caused back then. Nevertheless, the world around us is getting worse and worse. So it’s time for new formats. Space for new festivals. Ears for new sounds. We want to network, meet on equal terms and stand together against the general horror, oppose it, perhaps shake things up a bit. And still celebrate through the table. In (almost) the whole city, in many stable venues. With new friends and old companions. A cleansing storm, so to speak. A sustainable storm surge. A beginning. We have a lot planned: first, a decentralised city festival. Let’s go.

“It’s not enough for us to put on concerts and set off rave grenades; after all, OFF THE RADAR has never been a simple music festival. We draw lavishly from all genres of melodious sounds and noise surprise bags, from avant-garde, punk, up-tempo and down-tempo, live and sampling, robotics and theatre, performance and art. In public spaces. In the shadows. In the light. With brutal words and musical noise. Spoken, sung, slurred, whispered. With delicate force and powerful delicacy. On well-known stages in this city and in holes from which the pestilential breath of the past still emanates – but which will shine. In September.” (offtheradar.net)

I have my slot on 13 September at 1.30am at Golder Salon and there will be a bit of hip hop, a bit of metal, and of course hardcore/gabber. Come one, come all, sheep and shepherds, to this great festivity, let’s light up the dance floor on September 13th at Hafenklang!

Again it launches its dark, unpredictable, and concatenating deprogramming program, with several days of concerts, lectures, video/film screenings, performances, exhibitions, installations, workshops, discussions, DJ sets, and unpredictable fallouts implying ad hoc improvisations and fast acting.

In this ambitous program of the mille plateaux residency at Forum Stadtpark I play at the Gabber Wednesday at Forum alongside Katana and mille plateaux artist Ibrahim Alfa Jr. I will also show photos, flyers and video footage from my Gabber + Breakcore research, published as “Utopie und Apokalypse in der Popmusik”, talk about motivations and conclusions. Come along!

Gabber Wednesday: Lecture & Rave

Bianca Ludewig: “Utopia and Apocalypse in Pop Music” (lecture)

The study provides a vivid picture of the gabber and breakcore scenes in Berlin in the 2010s and attempts to place their sound and sonic qualities at the center of a cultural studies investigation. The music is analyzed as a sonic event and in its social context. From this sonic level, further fields of negotiation around the city and space are explored.

A free conference featuring paper presentations and panel discussions.

This Friday I am joining the Danceuclt Conference in Berlin. Dancecult is an academic open-access e-journal for the study of electronic dance music culture. I will have a 15min presentation at 14.30h about Challenges of Documentation and Platform Technologies for Festivals and later at 17.30h joining a panel with art historian Lukas and Noja Noja and Rosa of former Mensch Meier Club to discuss possibilities for documenting defunct Clubs and its communities.

24 January (Friday), 14:30–14:50 (Room H3001): Transmedia Festivals. Challenges of Documentation and Platform Technologies

The big enterprises of the concert industry have become completely disconnected from the music, and the care for music. Simultaneously the loss of control over our own data, the loss of privacy when we promote, stream, and share music, buy tracks or concert tickets, has quietly become the norm. Long-established social values that promote an open society are endangered in the online world. The context of my presentation is my long-term ethnographic study on festivals of experimental and electronic music in Europe. Digital technologies made it easier for festivals to manage and organize tasks and promote content, though this also results in new commitments and dependencies. The necessity of using digital infrastructures and platforms has increased dramatically for events and artists alike during the research period. These economization processes produce contradictions to the festivals philosophies of experimentation and improvisation in relation to their use of digital infrastructures and platforms.

24 January (Friday), 16:45–18:00 (Room H3002): New approaches to the documentation of cultural history with the example of the now defunct Berlin Club Mensch Meier by Noja Noja, Bianca Ludewig, Lukas Fuchsgruber, Mc Mate, and Rrrrr (moderation)

Conversations about the documentation, preservation, and archiving of electronic music and dance cultures—from their global evolution to the challenges of keeping their cultural heritage alive. Topics include DJing, club culture, festivals, and the untold stories of marginalized voices in these vibrant communities. All sessions will be streamed live.

Dayrave fundraiser for AwA*

You already have the impression that you’re in good hands, together with those known and unknown. You arrive at the door, you know you’re in the right place, you’re told that you can get support at any time if something doesn’t fit and it’s clear where and how. It is a space where you also feel that you can address things yourself and where you are accepted. Where you can be yourself. You follow the sound that is already ringing out to you, the pounding rhythmic tones. You stand in front of the speakers and can be, dance and lose yourself in the music. This dance floor is yours!

This is now solved but there is still a financial gap to fill. Through the party you directly support those affected by this decision, so let’s keep dancing for a change!

Now. Sonic quantums for a post-democracy

Julia Just has been exploring, generating and manipulating electronic frequency spectra for some time now, but she has only been performing live under this name at local and national experimental events for around three years. Her long overdue debut “Analogy of the Unspoken” (TM014/WSMTML67) is therefore razor sharp. It radiates with finesse like a brand new set of Damascus knives. Just resynthesizes everyday noises into soundscapes that hypnotize our auditory canals with precise urgency, vibrating and reverberating. In doing so, they set the unspeakable to music, such as the unease of a present that is getting out of hand.

★ HYLUT is a solo project by Lithuanian artist and composer Marija Jociūtė. In her sound work she uses pre-existing content, such as scientific data as part of her material. Through processes of deconstruction, manipulation, and recontextualization, she plays with the potential of auditory and narrative story telling. Hylut weaves together sounds of synthesizers, pulses of rhythm machines, digital elements as well as her own voice to create organically morphing sound compositions, which explore new correlations between tangible and ephemeral truths of our collective perception.

★ PΞB crawled out of a defunct furnace somewhere in Berlin. Industrialized Progcrustination. Harsh soundscapes cut into pieces, like a cake made from mud and your hard-boiled psyche. The road kill drum patterns and Vorpommern Chainsaw Massacre vocals, kidnaps the listeners into a soulless hole from where they might come back a little injured. Phantom ear bleeding is a common side effect lingering long past the journey. A souvenir, a Stockholm syndrome of sorts. This inconspicuous duo left their marks in various cellar holes and captured their tantrum so far in a cassette tape, called IAMCHAINSAW, released on Edelfaul Records.

★ JUKEBOX UTOPIA collects records, produces radioshows, journalistic texts, dj-sets, mixes and academic research about music. She dives deep into all kinds of musical genres, but when she is djing live in clubs dancing is the aim and purpose: oldschool hiphop merges with contemporary bass musics, or gabber and other sportive highspeed hardcore styles are fused, preferably in vinyl sets. In 2018 her book “Utopie und Apokalypse in der Pop Musik. Gabber und Breakcore in Berlin” was published via the University of Vienna. http://

November 01.-03. 2024 / Leipzig

BALANCE is back with its sixth edition!

The Balance Club / Culture Festival is coming back to Leipzig after a year’s break. Once again, the interdisciplinary club culture festival will take place in various locations in Leipzig, combining music, discourse and art. For the sixth time, the festival will bring an incomparable curation of internationality, musical finesse and innovation to Saxony.

In the discourse program of the festival I will present an input on 2.11. at 2pm in the Garage Ost on the topic

“Rooms for Resistance: An (incomplete) history of counterculture in the club scene”

In this presentation, selected historical examples will be presented in which emancipatory and resistant practices were tested in the context of techno rave and club culture. Historically, the emergence of countercultures is a consequence and expression of social upheaval, first seen in the context of the US protest movements of the 1960s. The idea of criticism, rejection and the questioning of established values were central to the concept of countercultures, which often went hand in hand with forms of self-organization and alternative structures. The beginnings of disco and house in the USA were already characterized by queer and migrant influences; clubs such as The Loft or Paradise Garage were intended to enable those who were otherwise discriminated against to party safely. And Detroit techno was also about utopias beyond racism and discrimination.

More recently, since the 1990s, the Free Party Movement emerged in England from the activism of squatters, travelers and sound systems as a counter-movement to neoliberal Thatcherism, which is closely linked to the emergence of Free Tekno and Teknivals, which were also tested in Germany. In the same way, anti-parades and demo raves were likewise popular formats of club scenes to engage against neoliberalism, gentrification, patriarchy or right-wing ideologies. What can we learn from the emancipatory and countercultural practices of the past in order to develop sustainable strategies for the present?

Balance remains resistant

The progressive cultural approach has been at the forefront of the festival since its inception. The Balance Festival started in 2018 as a platform for progressive club culture and transformative politics to strengthen marginalized, queer and feminist voices in club culture – especially in East Germany. The interdisciplinary club culture festival last took place in 2022 with over 50 international and local artists and speakers from the fields of music, art and discourse. This edition was characterized by questions of post-pandemic cultural creation.
In 2024, the Balance Festival is going on the offensive in times of economic and political tensions and a socio-political situation that increasingly threatens such progressive ideas: this year’s festival motto “Tensions” asks about tensions – but also about possibilities for encounters and moving on. Balance is convinced that club culture has often emerged from such tensions and has always been a place of refuge, a place where we can encounter a different reality, away from everyday dystopias. As an event collective, we believe that it is now more important than ever to reclaim clubs as places of counterculture for queer, feminist, anti-capitalist and decolonial utopias, untouched by the commercialization of nightlife. This is another reason why admission prices remain low and the discourse program free of charge.

She is known for her noise music performances and experiments with self-made gadgets and instruments. It is already late at night on this first night of donaufestival, and a few months ahead of Victoria’s performance at a Ventil Record’s Night at Unsafe+Sounds Festival in Vienna.

This will be awesome in this weather, folks, you’ll get a real-life check!! Maximum mild 3-hour shifts. Did you know that they are only allowed to take a break after 6 hours? They usually use their own smartphone and bicycle, and you have to pay for repairs yourself. Oh, this brave new world of work.

A series of the Institute for Sound Research at the HFG Offenbach, curated by Partrick Raddatz. As the name suggests, the event will take place at the Robert Johnson Club in Offenbach near Frankfurt:

Nordring 131
63067 Offenbach on the Main

https://robert-johnson.de/

Abstract/ invitation text:

Cities like London and Berlin market themselves prominently through their club culture. In both cities, however, the increasing neoliberalization and commercialization of music and culture has also fuelled forms of protest and resistant practices. Hardcore techno (gabber, breakcore, speedcore, etc.) and hard techno (tekkno) have rarely been featured in the narratives of electronic music and club culture or in research on the subject. Yet they are an important aspect when it comes to developing alternative visions beyond a hypercapitalistic economized society.
I will use video and audio examples to illustrate what defines hardcore techno genres such as gabber, breakcore or speedcore, and use two examples from soundsystem culture – the Berlin Fuckparade and the Free Tekkno/Teknival movement – to show what significance rave culture can have in the struggle for free spaces and for non-commercial ways of partying.

WO THE FUCK IS FUCKHEAD???

“In 2013 one of the most important musical institutions of the domestic underground celebrated its 25th anniversary. The Upper Austrian formation Fuckhead whose provocative-actionistic approach often polarizes and divides opinions, has long been recognized beyond Austrian borders as a pioneer of the extreme performance art and has always managed to reinvent itself over the years. (…) Didi Bruckmayr, Siegmar Aigner, Didi Kern and Michael Strohmann celebrate the conscious and excessive violation of tastefulness, as well as the excessive and controversial play with all sorts of machoid masculinity stereotypes. People are supposed to be offended and confronted with things that are not often seen and experienced in this heavily exaggerated form.” (https://www.musicexport.at/artist/fuckhead/)

For many years, websites and social media feeds have been a central form of publication of artists and cultural professionals’ own work. Self-representation on the web since the 1990s represents an important untapped archive of Berlin scenes, documenting works, spaces, events, and exhibitions. However, these important sources of Berlin’s recent history are mostly precarious and in danger of disappearing due to the lack of long-term strategies to secure them. For this often publicly funded cultural heritage, practicable structures for sustainable archiving have been lacking until now.

“Art Doc Archive” consists of open-source prototypes for archiving and visualizing websites and socia media feeds, which was developed community-based in the first phase with a small data sample of Berlin artists and cultural workers. In addition to facilitating resources, tools and research, the aim is also to raise awareness of the need to free one’s own documentation from the data silos of social media: “Reclaim your archive!” is the motto of the “Art Doc Archive” blog, which also publishes the thoughts of numerous experts on the surrent situation of digital data and the potentials of such a public platform.

With a great team, in which I had the pleasure to supervise the blog and text contributions, this prototype was developed, which is primarily intended to create awareness of the fact that most archives in which we document our artistic or creative work are NOT secure. Project and text contributions also want to highlight pending issues in the context of web archiving and digital data, in order to create more sensitivity for the handling of digital media and data.

3 Recent Films About Feminism: Brainwashed, Women Talking, Feminism WTF https://bl.wiseup.de/feminism-brainwashed-talking/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/feminism-brainwashed-talking/?lang=en#respond Sat, 08 Apr 2023 16:00:46 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=4382 Read the full article...]]> 2022/2023 I saw these movies & documentaries all dealing with feminism and patriarchy in differnt ways.. I enjoyed all them and thus like to recommend them!!

Check out the trailers and basic infos:

Trailer Feminism WTF (Katharina Mückstein, AT 2023)

The women’s movement is the most successful social movement of the 20th century and has affected all levels of society. Its achievements have not only fought for better living conditions for women*, but have radically changed our ways of life and our ideas of living together. And although feminist debates like #metoo have reached the center of society, the term “feminist” still has a negative undertone.

The documentary FEMINISM WTF (What the Fuck) breaks down a variety of topics that are negotiated under the term feminism in 2023. Experts from political and social sciences, masculinity studies, gender, queer and trans studies explore the question of how we can all contribute to breaking down power and dependency relationships in order to be a society of the many in solidarity. This involves many current debates: Why do we always talk about only two genders? Why do women* have to do most of the unpaid housework and child-care? Why are capitalism and feminism a contradiction? What does European colonialism have to do with today’s ideas of sexual freedom and racist stereotypes? Why do we need feminism to save the climate? And why are so few men actually engaged in feminism? In FEMINISM WTF, director Katharina Mückstein places the experts in a cinematic dialogue with music video sequences set to the electronic soundtrack of Tony Renaissance: the aestheticized dance and performance motifs break with common notions of pop feminism and create fun, new images of bodies and gender.

Trailer Brainwashed. Sex-Camera-Power (Nina Menkes, US 2022)

“ … a fierce and focused polemic reviving the subject of the “male gaze” for the #MeToo era…. Menkes shows us that the way the camera looks at women, and everything else, is not a transparent, value-free business. On the contrary: with men so overwhelmingly in charge, it is an activity of coercion and imposition, determined by gender politics. And sexuality as it appears on screen is not the natural, unmediated free expression of equal pleasure, but deeply embedded in male power relations……‘Brainwashed’ is a bracing blast of critical rigour.” [Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian Oct 15, 2022 via ninamenkes.com]

Trailer Women Talking (Sarah Polley, US 2022)

“A decade ago, a conspiracy involving sexual abuse within a Mennonite community was uncovered. Seven men had been raping more than a hundred women, using powerful drugs to put them to sleep and blaming the acts on supernatural incidents. Miriam Toews, a woman raised in a community just like this one, wrote a novel about the case, but from a different, provocative angle. Instead of writing about the crimes themselves, she imagined their consequences. WOMEN TALKING mostly takes place in a barn and deals with eight women discussing what happened and trying to decide what to do about it. (…) With a great cast and a compelling “case”, this film could be seen in stylistic terms as a female version of the classic TWELVE ANGRY MEN, although the characters here are risking their own lives with the decision they take. This is a story about a crime, but it’s also about centuries of injustice. (Chaiya Thongthang)” [https://www.viennale.at/en/film/women-talking]

Unsafe+Sounds Festival Vienna: Politics of Immediacy, September 23rd-October 1st 2022 https://bl.wiseup.de/unsafesounds-festival-zacherlfabrik/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/unsafesounds-festival-zacherlfabrik/?lang=en#respond Tue, 20 Sep 2022 22:38:07 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=4292 Read the full article...]]> UNSAFE+SOUNDS IS PUSHING BACK AGAINST THE VIRAL FEELING OF INSECURITY AND FOCUSES ON ARTISTIC POSITIONS THAT CONFRONT OUR REALITY. WE WANT TO ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL CHANGES IN OUR ENVIRONMENT, AND SEARCH FOR AGENCY, FOR APPROPRIATE SOUNDS FOR OUR TAINTED FUTURE AND OUR BEWILDERING EXISTENCE.

TAINTED FUTURES – AGENCY OF IMMEDIACY

Every day, the outrageous seems to become more and more commonplace: war, natural disasters, climate crises, energy crises, banking crises, epidemics and pandemics, right-wing pressure, surveillance, information overflow, excess of data, exploitation, synchronization, powerlessness, depression. Smart powers rule, so it is easy to misunderstand domination as freedom and digital communication as community. Surveillance creeps into everyday life as a convenience, and freedom is exploited. Dataism does not envision a different future. The ‘like’, Byung-Chul Han believes, is excluding the revolution. Today, there is only a perspective of crisis when we think about the future. Farewell to utopia, now for real.

The immediacy of the here and now, living in the moment is attainable. Our bodies, we still have. And sound. The birth of alternative realities is not yet in sight – the critical mass remains invisible – yet in ecstatic states, in stepping out of oneself, different worlds of perception are offered. We build ourselves an idealized subjective reality, an emotional retreat, a cocooning, yes, but nonetheless still the search for a different kind of presence in the here and now is continuing. We seek a practice of (un)learning, of feeling the real of the moment, the immediacy of sound – the urgency of volume or silence, the hypnotic speed or slowness of rhythm, seeking and finding an elimination of pain, a temporary autonomous zone, a Utopia of Sound. The reconquest of euphoria, jouissance and ecstasy, shared intense experiences by means of sonic fictions and mutations. Sonic sensuality – being immediate. At least temporarily, for a few days, locating vehemence in the ephemerality of the moment.

CREATING SITUATIONS

Entering its 8th edition in 2022, Unsafe+Sounds Festival will once again focus on the connection between social issues and contemporary aesthetics in music. The festival presents musical positions of a contemporary culture, which try to reflect and, with partly radical results, to depict the reality surrounding us. What unites the participating musicians are emancipatory approaches that form an aesthetic for our present moment; socialization through DJ and sampling culture. The aim is to show some of the many intersections of experimental underground, contemporary club culture and academic avant-garde, and ultimately to repurpose the potential found in the immediacy and urgency of music. After all, the capacity for imagination begins with the music-listening subject, with what gives us pleasure.

POLITICS OF THE DANCEFLOOR

For the first time, there will be a discourse program in 2022, covering the politics of the body in search of audio-social potentials. Bodies will be back! According to Kodwo Eshun, music is often about unlearning the laws internalized by the body. For him, that’s exactly what politics is: “It’s about re-enchanting the idea of the body, and there’s a lot of music that does just that. But it’s not big-P politics, it’s not marching-and-demonstrating politics, it’s sensual/sensory politics.” Dancing and listening are important audio-social practices for us, they don’t establish revolution or utopia, but they exercise presence and express agency. The discourse program investigates the unwritten politics of the dance floor and what remains when the music is over.

The techno-rave can be interpreted as the last great utopia in pop. Many saw considerable sociopolitical or countercultural potential not only in the novel sounds but also in the club as a social site, but it was never fully formulated, and ultimately hardly realized. This is why Simon Reynolds wrote in 1997 that rave culture has turned from living dream to living death. Many thought that if class, race or gender could be overcome on the dancefloor, then the pending problems could be solved overall. But back in everyday life, most of the problems remained. The club or rave itself was rarely explicitly directed against discrimination or disadvantages – one was not against it, but one was for overcoming it. Nevertheless, numerous ravers, musicians, and researchers ascribe countercultural potential to the club and the dancefloor. The question of why is explored in four thematic blocks.

#1 How does music change in the globalized (platform) capitalism of the present? (DeForrest Brown Jr., Mattin)
#2 Off the Radar: What is happening beyond the attention machine? Experimental music and noise from regions of the so-called ‘global south’ (Cedrik Fermont)
#3 Enjoyment, pleasure, intensity, intimacy & communality in the context of sound experiences and alternative sound cultures (Wolfgang Sterneck, Eugenia Seriakov); door and gatekeeping policies, curated diversity in clubs (Luis Manuel Garcia); situating the dancefloor (Ana Threat & No Bra)
#4 Local history and status quo – discussions with witnesses and activists: the beginnings of techno in Vienna (Pure, Tina 303, Pulsinger, Tunakan, DJ Glow) and collectively-managed music spaces in Austria (p.m.k., Einbaumöbel, KAPU, Lames, Arena Squatting 1976). Which spaces for thinking, listening, and playing have opened or closed in 30 years of club culture and what do we need for the future?

SHILLA STRELKA (Artistic Director) & BIANCA LUDEWIG (Discourse Programme Director)

The Zacherlfabrik will host the opening as well as the discourse program, concerts and the exhibition on Transmedia Festivals ( Martina Moro/ Parmon/ Bianca Ludewig).

Review 25 Years of Fuckparade – Berlin September 3rd 2022 https://bl.wiseup.de/rueckblick-fuckparade-berlin/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/rueckblick-fuckparade-berlin/?lang=en#respond Tue, 06 Sep 2022 23:50:01 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=4262 Read the full article...]]> Fuckparade – 25 years protest from below

Against displacement, commercialization and senseless highway construction!

Against the commercialization of techno
Against the closing of clubs, bars and neighborhood shops
Against the sellout of the city
Against Nazis

On September 3rd 2022 the 25th Fuckparade took place in Berlin. Meeting point was at 14Uhr near subway Alt-Tempelhof.

“We are back. Fuckparade. Platform for the subcultures of the city” can be read on the back of the flyer. “Because what goes wrong in Berlin,” it continues. This year, the focus was on the following Berlin geographies:

A100:
An anachronistic asphalt and concrete road that, despite protests and proven climate damage, is nevertheless to be built further by hook or by crook. Absolutely unacceptable. Let’s shut down the avalanche of metal with our protest and turn the asphalt into a dance floor!

Hermannstraße:
A classic of Berlin urban development. Unbridled car traffic, although one floor below a well-developed subway can transport people in an environmentally friendly way. Needless to say, bike lanes are not really available.

Reuterkiez:
Here, monthly rents of 25 €/m² are readily paid. No limits for real estate speculation. The lobby has filed lawsuits to overturn the rent cap and the right of first refusal. Rents that continue to rise displace even long-time residents of the neighborhood. At the same time, Vonovia reports the highest profit in its history and announces further rent increases.

Treptower Park:
The current A100 construction section leads to Treptower Park, the end point of the Fuckparade. Each meter of this highway currently costs 203,125 euros. If the construction section continues towards the east, clubs like ://about blank, ELSE, Renate, Club OST, Kili, Kosmonaut and many more will be irretrievably destroyed.

A Parade Flashback:

The starting point was unusual, because it did not start – as almost always – at Friedrichstrasse/ Reinhardtstr. in Mitte, at the former BUNKER, but in Alt-Tempelhof, why I do not know. One reason was probably the nearby A-100 (see flyer text above), where the route started and which we crossed (see flyer route below) and the end point is near the upcoming expansion of the A-100. The starting point was pleasant, because next to the street was a small and beautiful park, where you could wait relaxed until it – as always a little later – started.

I did not hear the speeches for the most part. They were only heard near the first float and further back nothing arrived. Moog-T, who has just become a new dad and came with baby, read out the requirements, which included that there should be no dancing on the trucks and the music should not be louder than 90db.

Especially the latter was completely absurd and super annoying, constantly there were measuring points and policemen running around with volume meters. During measurements, the music was tactically drastically quieter or turned off completely, which extremely disturbed the flow, but ensured that we were allowed to continue. Even if it was sometimes briefly over 90db, being a musician was disappointing to sad…90db is barely louder than a truck. But the mood on site, was still great.

For 25 years of Fupa, Martin Kliehm/ Traum XP, one of the founders, also arrived from Frankfurt and made the first speech, the last one was made by a woman in a wheelchair who complained that there was no affordable barrier-free housing for people like her, that there was hardly any affordable housing left in Berlin at all, and that this made her angry and that’s why we want to be loud today. She shouted the last, which caused applause and affirmative counter-shouts. Then it took a while until we started moving.

The police and the 90db rule annoyed massively, in between there were always “louder” chants from the crowd. When the music went off again for a longer time period, I once lost my temper and yelled at a six-pack of policemen that I demonstrate to be heard and not to sneak unnoticed through the city. The police also set the pace and pushed us along unexpectedly fast. I didn’t know most of the streets along the route after 10 years in Berlin, let alone ever danced on them. I really like this, similar to critical mass, exploring the city together.

This creates a good mood to the sad gentrification game. In most years the route passed more directly along the night life and cultural venues that were just closed or will soon be evicted. Driven by the tempo of police forces we reached the end point, the Treptower Park, 1.5 hours earlier. After 20min everybody let go of the inhibitions and 90db rule. The FuPa Crowd flooded the car road that leads through the park and turned it into a dance floor, the masses spread out on all the surrounding meadows and the Spätis at the S-Bahn station.

Lineup Subland Truck:

Gretchen Bazooka (16:00)
Acriter (16:45)
Neurocortex (17:30)
Joe ET (18:15)
Waynette (19:00)
Dolphin (19:45)
Li-Z (20:30)
Kat (21:15)

At the Subland/ A-Sound truck Dolphin then suddenly played earlier, in front of Waynette, and for an hour you could feel the energy crackle in the air, so charged was everything by the euphoria of the dancing people, everyone was grinning and happy that the music can finally be so loud that it can unfold its sonic power and ultimately be danced to. Unfortunately, the wonderful moment was short-lived.

Sadly, the two DJs Waynette and Kat, who were among the few women who DJed, did not get to play at all. Planned was until 22 clock, but at 20.30 it was all over. That was painful, and even decision of the Fuckparade organizers. I did not think that was a good decision, but for those who organize a lot at FuPa it is always a huge effort and they were probably exhausted and glad that it ended an hour earlier.

As there were also two afterparties – some years there were none at all – where many from the FuPa Orga either played or helped out. The Subland afterparty was at Kili Club near Ostkreuz and another open air at H13, Juliusturm near Spandau… Oh, it was nice! Hopefully next year again :)

This is a 39min video von KIEKE MA – jannz Berlin is eene Performance. Sadly only documenting the first half…

We are more than thrilled to welcome NYC based rhythmanalyst, writer, and representative of the Make Techno Black Again campaign DeForrest Brown Jr. to Vienna, who will give a talk on his recently published, long awaited book “Assembling A Black Counter-Culture” (PrimaryInformation) that is repositioning the Techno genre as a unique form of Black musical and cultural production. The presentation is followed by a musical performance under his moniker Speaker Music (Planet Mu). Additionally we have Memphis’ Blaq Hammer over (thanks much for connecting Ant Car) who is drawing from punk, techno, rap, and industrial styles, aiming to break down the false narratives that work in favor of the destruction of the so called lower classes and marginalized people. Last years KISMIF (Keep it Simple – Make it Fast) conference, annually held in Porto, Portugal, was a bit disappointing, with everything closing at 22pm due to the Corona pandemic and almost none of the scheduled concert program of the conference could happen. But the city of Porto and the Atlantic were definately worth the visit. Only a few people were participating live in Porto (even most of the people from Portugal participated only online). We were only a handful of people switiching between numerous empty seminar rooms, attended only by the technicians or hosts watching the screens. Most of the video/ audio quality was poor and it was hard to follow the inputs.

That is why I am very happy that the publication is out now and available for everybody to read and enjoy!

It also enables fair and equal pricing, adjusted to one’s individual resources, and empowers all participants. The prix libre allows the organizers to create a festival without being profitable, without imposing pricing views on participants, and to distance themselves from the value society imposes on human labour.

Audio social communities and affect engineering

In my research on transmedia festivals, I approach different urban scenes that come together through electronic music and experimental sound practices as audio social communities. I want to outline how affect is linked to contemporary community building, forms of communality, and what role affect has in sound and the sonic experience within certain genres and events. The aim of communities led by sonic affect is, for example, to combat fear as a postmodern phenomenon in capitalism, through rhythm, resonance, speed, vibrations, volume, or atmospheres.

Bianca Ludewig is a cultural anthropologist; studies in philosophy, ethnology and European ethnology in Hamburg and Berlin. PhD research project on “Transmedia Festivals. Audiosoziale Gemeinschaften zwischen Experiment und Ökonomisierung”. She was a university assistant at the University of Vienna where her book “Utopie und Apokalypse in der Popmusik. Gabber und Breakcore in Berlin” was published in 2019. Ludewig has been producing texts and radio broadcasts for many years.

Lecture/ Talk 9th of April – ‘Affective Communities’ at Korzo Club.

“In my research I approach different urban scenes that come together through music as audio social communities. Audio social communities are in most cases affective communities. This is true for most of the scenes linked to electronic music, club culture or experimental sound practices. I want to present some of my findings that show how affect is linked to contemporary forms of communality, and what role sound and the sonic experience have within certain genres, and events. The aim of such affective communities in music is, for example, to combat fear as a postmodern phenomenon, through rhythm, resonance, speed, vibrations, volume, or atmospheres”.

“Meshing hard techno and gabber beats with pan-African drum rhythms and pairing IDM electronics with juke house, Nkisi is a truly unique talent defying genre classification. We catch up with the London-based, Congolese-Belgian DJ, producer and activist to discuss her forthcoming album on Lee Gamble’s UIQ, her collective, NON Worldwide, and the influence of African cosmology on her work…”. (DJ Mag 2019)

“Theorist Bianca Ludewig will join Nkisi on Sunday 10 April for a conversation on the educational and healing properties in vibrations, in connection with the sonic ancestral research that feeds into Nkisi’s new project with The Secret Institute titled Invisible Gestures – the first encounter of this project will be shared Saturday night at Paard”. “In theatre studies, the research field of “festivals studies” is constantly developing. The contributors to this volume focus for the first time on the work of festivals and discuss them in terms of their performative potential in practice-oriented conversations, essays and papers. 28 June 2021

BIANCA LUDEWIG has been researching club culture as a cultural anthropologist for years. She talks to Stefan Niederwieser about utopias, a communal love of music, stories that are missing and hard work at female:pressure to fight misconceptions.

Heart of Noise 2014 / Lumisokea (c) Bianca Ludewig

Is club culture best described as a counterculture, a subculture, a milieu, a scene?

Bianca Ludewig: Many still speak of countercultures and subcultures. From a scientific point of view, this is no longer tenable. Our present is very different from the 1960s, 70s or 80s. Many academics have therefore introduced the term “scene”. This term is difficult to use on its own. You need other terms or aspects such as genres for music scenes. But the term works because these lifestyle communities are characteristic of our present, which we easily get into and quickly get out of. We are often part of several scenes or lifestyle communities. They usually also provide economic opportunities and drive their own gentrification, while subcultures are less fluid and have rather tried to act critically towards mainstream society and to shape alternatives to it.

So “scene” after all?

Bianca Ludewig: Yes and no. The term scene is imprecise. In the case of music, I therefore speak of “audio-social communities”. This makes it clear that it is about music, that sound is in the foreground, and is the reason why these people come together. The idea of the audio-social was phrased by Steve Goodman or Kode9 in a text about “Speed Tribes”. As a label operator and music producer, however, he did not continue to investigate on the “audio-social”. John Cage has previously coined the term “Scenius”, a portmanteau of scene and genius. It describes the fact that no great idea in music history comes from one persona alone, but that there are always many people involved to make it happen. But not only people. Places and technologies are also very important for music communities. This is what the concept of “audio-social communities” tries to include. It brings us together with non-human actors in the love of music.

“I believe that the club has a justification as an utopian space.”

Is the club a myth as an utopian place?

Bianca Ludewig: I believe that the club has a justification as an utopian space. And that it some possibilities in rudimentary forms. It’s just that many of the actors in recent years have been too little politicised, too naïve and careless. If we take Freetek or its criminalisation in England into account, then these spaces have definitely been utopian places within a capitalistic economy; and have been criminalized because of this. There is already a catalogue of demands implicitly made by club culture over decades. But they were never written down or did not become part of an agenda. And accordingly, only the parts that were easy going with a capitalistic economy were implemented and all the others were not.

For example?

Bianca Ludewig: Ultimately, these are very often economic issues. In Berlin, the incomes of many people in the creative sector are very low. And it is very expensive to go to the club, the entrance fee, the drinks or other things to be able to stay awake or strong for a long time. This is not affortable to everyone and often they are not inclusive but exclusive. Clubbing became to many a consuming and networking event. There is often a lack of understanding of how important these spaces are, and many have been lost in the past years due to gentrification processes. But we need them! In late capitalism, it works too well that creatives help to bring value to these properties and their neighbourhoods but as soon as they have gained value they and many others have to leave these neighbourhoods. Yet these music spaces are insanely important – not just for partying. But for social activities and artistic developments in general. And also in an affective, immersive, emotional and physical way. We all have a lot of pressure in everyday life. The club helps us to deal with this. The current debates about and increasing incidents of domestic violence also show that this is important.

The 2021 edition takes place in hybrid format – online as well as on site.

I present an excerpt from my phd with the title: The Sonic Experience of Experimental Electronics (abstract below)

Over the past couple of decades, urban transmedia festivals have gained a distinct presence in the European cultural landscape and beyond, constituting an alternative to other, more dominant, conceptions of music festivals. I situate these festivals within scenes and communities of experimental music. Most of the presented music is subsumed under wide ranging umbrella-categories like experimental or electronic music. While many of those festivals are not DIY festivals – though some started out as such – parts of the audience and attendees are part of DIY experimental music scenes. Many festivals changed their subtitles throughout the years from electronic music to “adventurous music”, to emphasize experiments and transgressions of genres limits. There is still very little research on this type of music. Based on multi-year field research, I will present some of my findings. Most research in this area is focusing on noise music so far. Yet there is a huge set of genres and practitioners that do not define their approach as noise music, but as sound art, improv, fringe music, post club – or as subgenres of techno, bass music etc. with the prefix experimental. I want to present conceptualizations of experimental electronic music styles and modes of sound art on the edge of music. I my Ph.D. I worked with genre-concepts and ideas of anti-genre to explain better the manyfold expressions and origins of experimental music.

It documents seven years of Viennese subculture at the AU Vienna, a club located at Brunnenmarkt in the 16th district, which was something like a living room for me in my early days in Vienna. It was also there that I organised the event Subcultures Under Pr€$$ur€ together with my comrades-in-arms, and the panel discussion that opened the evening. The topic of the panel was “strategies and possibilities for more diversity in booking”, which I transcribed for the AUzine. A special feature of the AUzine is that it is available in three languages: English, German and Serbo-Croatian. It comprises about 530 pages.

The following is an excerpt from Music Austria’s press report on AuZine:

“Anyone who lives in Vienna and is involved with DIY culture, underground, experimental art […] knows the AU: an open space, gallery and club where, until its closure from 2012 to 2019, there were over 2000 concerts, exhibitions, readings, performances, workshops, lectures, discussions and much more, without any significant funding and most of the time without admission. The AUZINE documents not only the seven years at the AU, but also the many multi- and subcultural facets of the Viennese scene and what it actually means to dedicate one’s life and work to the underground in this city. It is a collection, documentation, memento, snapshot and long-term study. […] Michael Podgorac spent two years on this project. 87 photographers, 28 illustrators, comic artists and other visual artists have provided their work, 30 authors have written texts and articles, and 18 translators have taken care of the trilingual publication – most of them free of charge or for a symbolic contribution. Ivan Antunović is responsible for the design of this tome. In cooperation with Vinylograph and Transformer, a special compilation of AUZINE tapes and vinyl EPs will be published in addition to the book. […] The AUZINE itself features articles on Vienna’s club history, various event series, their specific strategies and concepts, portraits of artists, labels and locations, interviews and stories from the fringe, as well as a listing of the entire line up from 20 September 2012 to 18 September 2019.”

And here is the teaser text for the panel discussion:

It was a hot Viennese summer 2017, real dog days and completely unclear whether anyone would even come to the AU for our event Subcultures Under Pr€$ur€. Especially so early in the evening and for a discussion. I had been in Vienna for a year now and had enjoyed insights into the local nightlife and hoped to meet other members of female:pressure (f:p) in the Viennese nightlife. Before that I had been involved in the second Perspectives Festival of f:p in Berlin and thought I would find an active f:p group in Vienna. Susanne Kirchmayr (Electric Indigo) is from Vienna and had brought f:p to life. But in fact everyone was quite busy, as it is in big cities. And there is always a lot of work and little money in the cultural field. But I had met a lot of committed women who weren’t with f:p and so I wanted to organise a party where people could exchange ideas and make music together. My comrades-in-arms were Ruth Weismann, Michi Kisling and Mojca Obradović. Without them, the evening could not have taken place! Susi Rogenhofer, Mike Giebl and the AU crew supported us. The whole event was well attended and the music programme was wonderful. This is above all thanks to all those involved. Those involved in the discussion were: Aiko Okamoto, Susanne Kirchmayr/ Electric Indigo, Marlene Engel/ Bliss & Hyperreality, Hannah Christ/ Femdex, Hicran Ergen, Susi Rogenhofer, Ruth Weismann and Dafina / Femme DMC and the artists Kisling, Unprofessional, Antonia, Femme DMC, Mila Chiral and Missus from Vienna and Berlin.”

Conference “Breaking Rules – European Hip Hop Meeting”, 11th-12th of September Rotterdam (NL) https://bl.wiseup.de/conference-september-rotterdam/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/conference-september-rotterdam/?lang=en#respond Mon, 07 Sep 2020 19:07:52 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3977 Read the full article...]]>

On September 11th and 12th, 2020 the third edition of the European Hip Hop Studies Network Meeting will take place – live and online – in the Netherlands for the first time. And hip hop city Rotterdam will be hosting it.

I am happy that I will be part of this exciting conference. Though it is a shame I can’t be there live, just being one of those who participate online. As for those interested in hardcore Rotterdam is a sort of Mekka, a holy place one has to visit at least once in a lifetime. In my mind I was already emersing myself in interviews, buying records and attending small hardcore parties in Rotterdam… And of course enjoying every bit of this conference. But I guess it must happen another time. Nonetheless this conference is something I have dreamed of: we are invited to break the rules, including those of academia!

I prepared a podcast for the conference which you can listen to here:

Here is the Abstract: Academic literature and theory on hip-hop played a crucial part in different aspects of my ethnography and analysis on hardcore techno. This podcast will outline the role of hip-hop in hardcore techno. And it will enable you to listen to the music at stake. You will be guided by The DJ Producer (Luke McMillan), a pioneer of the hip-hop influenced side of the genre. He will talk about 30 years of experience in hardcore permeated and spiced up through hip-hop elements and techniques. Techno and hip-hop crossed paths as some individuals started to use hip-hop samples and turntablism techniques in gabber and hardcore. This is due to the musical background of some producers and DJs who were socialized with hip-hop as teenagers. As a consequence, they integrated their musical knowledge and techniques into hardcore. This even became a subgenre called UK hardcore with labels like Deathchant, Rebelscum, or Audio Damage who made this style popular. On Saturday 14pm there will be a Q&A session about the podcast, related research and open questions at

But the whole conference is extremly interesting. You can find the complete program and line-up here

The line-up will be a mix of international hip hop scholars, hip hop artists, graffiti specialists and urban culture experts. Such as: Ian Solomon-Kawall, Gregor Bulc and Dieuwertje Heuvelings. There will be Artist Talks – by bboy break dancer Redo, rapper Akwasi, and street soccer specialist Rocky – on the impact of hip hop on their lives and how they use this impact to inspire youth. These sessions will be live streamed online.

In addition, there will be sessions on hip hop studies, online and offline. For instance: get to know 12 young Dutch hip hop scholars who are grounded in the hip hop and academic community, experience a somethin’-out-of-nothin’ session or an in the moment analysis of hip hop tracks, get involved in discussion on feminism in hip hop or share your thoughts on issues of belonging and non-belonging in hip hop.

In short: a wide array of lively interactive sessions in which the audience’s participation and knowledge is indispensable. Feel free to join, feel free to share your thoughts, so that research on hip hop and its real life practice can reinforce each other.

This network meeting is organized by LKCA in cooperation with EHHSN and will take place during the Rotterdam Street Culture Weekend. The main language used in the meeting will be English.

Check out the complete all speakers, artists and topics for discussion.

So ask your friends who work or study at universities to get it/ download from the library. Of course the content is worth the effort. You can find an overview of the chapters and abstracts here at Springer

My article on “The Berlin Techno Myth and Issues of Diversity” can be downloaded below and raises themes that I noticed within club culture that seem crucial to me. I don’t post the cover here as it is obviously a standardised cover picture for the series “Music Business Research“. And it shows part of a violine and some notation /musical score. That is evidently very confusing for a book about electronic music. And for music business investigation maybe as well. The whole scenario overall does not look very appealing to me. If I would pay 88€ for a book it should also look kool, thats for sure. There is a whole art about how to print, design, make books. But I am drifting off topic…Here is the publishers teaser:

“This book offers a comprehensive overview of electronic dance music (EDM) and club culture. To do so, it interlinks a broad range of disciplines, revealing their (at times vastly) differing standpoints on the same subject. Scholars from such diverse fields as cultural studies, economics, linguistics, media studies, musicology, philosophy, and sociology share their perspectives. In addition, the book features articles by practitioners who have been active on the EDM scene for many years and discuss issues like gender and diversity problems in general, and the effects of gentrification on club culture in Berlin. Although the book’s main focus is on Berlin, one of the key centers of EDM and club culture, its findings can also be applied to other hotspots. Though primarily intended for researchers and students, the book will benefit all readers interested in obtaining an interdisciplinary overview of research on electronic dance music.”

Politics of Contemporary Techno & Club Culture in Vienna
A Panel Discussion hosted by LoopLab

Techno and club culture create spaces for the satisfaction of various desires as well as for escapism. It can be experienced as a state of the body, of the mind, as an attitude, a philosophy or a community. No matter the angle, it always has political implications. Or, has it? How political is techno today? And has techno – like art & music in general – an obligation to be (explicitly) political? And if so, how so?

Techno functioned as an important social movement since its inception. At the same time the commercialization of techno as a big business is still ongoing. And it is thereby (whether on purpose or not) consuming/replacing more and more less profitable/underground structures (which are struggling with displacement, repression or simply ignorance yet again).
Furthermore, all of us, as the individuals and social networks producing and/or consuming these culture/s are (more or less) a reflection of society’s current state. That fundamentally includes mechanisms of power and hierarchy. As a rule women*, queers, people of color (as well as other minorities) still have to struggle for safer spaces and equality within music scenes – techno is not an exception.

To talk about some of these issues we invited different artists, protagonists and researchers of the local techno landscape. Together we will discuss not only their motives, experiences and struggles, but also more general questions like:
What makes the scene in Vienna special or unique compared to scenes in other countries? What does political and social thinking or action mean in the context of techno, club culture or their collectives? What are the benefits of creating a certain community, underground or subculture? Who is in charge anyway? And is there such a thing as a political sound to begin with?

A panel discussion with:
Biance Ludewig (reseacher on music and subcultures, journalist)
– Gerald VDH / (DJ, producer, Meat Market)
– hausgemacht (Frederika “Fredi” Ferková (Orga-Team Zusammen Kommen); Sandro Nicolussi aka BYDL (DJ, journalist, Tongræber – Verein elektronischer Klangkunst))

CTM and transmediale 2020, 28 january -2 february, Berlin@HKW, Bethanien, Berghain and other venues https://bl.wiseup.de/festival-transmediale-bethanien/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/festival-transmediale-bethanien/?lang=en#respond Tue, 28 Jan 2020 00:09:11 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3863 Read the full article...]]> Another year went by too quick and again it is time for CTM festival and transmediale. Whereas transmediale is much older, and CTM was an attempt to strengthen the music as media art within transmediale, CTM became an independent festival and some people consider it one of the best festival for experimental music and club culture. Today CTM and transmediale share only a few events like the club/ concert night, or the press conference. Both festivals offer interesting discourse/ conference programs.

And after transmediale has finished for the day, one can experience CTM concerts and club events every night at differnet venues in Berlin. So you don’t need to sleep. The transmediale seems to try a new concept, maybe because of this years topic, which is “End to End”. That makes me nostalgic as I organisated with others three end2end-festivals in hamburg, those were dedicated mostly to graffiti films and urban arts exhibitions. And I always loved the name “End2End” I came up with as it not only stands for end2end bruners (traingraffiti, whole train), but also for end2end network communication (coding, encryption). Transmediale hits at the later meaning and beyond.

Tranmediale is located for the exhibition, film programm, and opening as usual in the HKW near the parliament and is then changing to the Volxbühne for a 2 day symposium, which seems to be a new stratregy, and the symposium is already sold out. But also the film programm at HKW is sold out. It seems they started some degrowth, as it seems less tickets are being sold. Or many more people than the last years go to transmediale this year… I think the network topic is interesting and important, needed! I research about networks myself, but: no tickets :( At least that way I dont need to decide where to go, which makes ctm-transmediale always stressful… So here is their curatorial statement:

transmediale 2020 End to End reevaluates the role of networks as technological, social, and artistic infrastructure and their limits: it will outline potential futures of the network society and beyond.

“Networks are everywhere, whether personal or organizational, for social or business life, centralized or decentralized: node-based communication and information exchange has arguably become the defining technological, economic, and cultural form of globalization and the digital society. A certain network idealism permeates the globe, resulting in all forms of networks and networking practices being mainly defined through the techno-bureaucratic master form of the Internet. Already in 1967 the artists Robert Filliou and George Brecht wrote that “The Network is Everlasting”. The line is taken from a pre-Internet culture poem celebrating the interconnectedness of everyday-life actions across an emerging global world. This poetic imagining of an “eternal network” is a reminder that network cultures exist beyond the technical reality of the “actually existing” network culture as we now know it.

Inspired by this pre-Internet idea of networks, transmediale 2020 – End to End focuses on both forgotten and potential futures with and without networks. Leaving behind a decade marked by a backlash against the Internet and the network society, transmediale aims at a comprehensive re-evaluation of networks and their limits. The history of European Critical Internet Cultures that emerged in the 1990s serves as a starting point: Together with a series of other global experiments in autonomous networking they consistently provided alternatives to the technological solutionist thinking and centralized business models of Silicon Valley. By drawing on the legacies of critical and autonomous network cultures transmediale 2020 not only wants to make the limits of Internet-based networks visible but also highlight alternatives to bring about sustainable social change. Is there a conceivable counter-power to networks? Which alternative technological models and cultural narratives are needed to construct the principles of end-to-end communication anew? In the upcoming festival edition these questions will be explored through a month-long group exhibition which will present new artistic works that both refute and reform networks, and an opening week full of talks, workshops, screenings, and performances.”

Also differnt this time is the curation. Naturally it should be comprised by a network itself; and the artistic director Kristoffer Gansing got support and advice from Clemens Apprich, Daphne Dragona, Geert Lovink, and Florian Wüst, all of whom are responsible for different program items.

Since the exhibition is (beside the opening) the only event left to visit if you are not holding a pass, here is the statement for the exhibition.

The Eternal Network, 28 Jan – 01 Mar 2020 HKW, Berlin

“The Eternal Network is a group exhibition about the persistence of networks, with a focus on their potentials and limits in response to current social and technological changes. The exhibition is curated by Kristoffer Gansing. The network has become an ever-present technical, social, and organizational form. In the mid-1960s, Fluxus artist Robert Filliou coined the term “The Eternal Network,” referring to social interactions taking place through mail art and other emerging means of global communication. This idealistic notion of the network can be contrasted with the many limitations of networks that have become tangible today. With this shift in mind, the exhibition presents twenty recent artworks that re-engage or move beyond the role of the internet and the network imaginary in today’s critical entanglements of humans, environments, and technologies.
Read the curatorial statement.

In Contrast the theme of CTM is this year “liminal”. This is somehow funny as the word “liminal” has been creeping allover ctm-texts already the last decades. So one could say it comes natural. And considering recent climate change debates, one hopes that the state is liminal; and not final.

CTM always last longer than transmediale and CTM started last week on the 24th of January. Here is the curatorial statement: “Liminal phenomena and liminoid states are transitional phases in which a familiar order sees its values and symbols destabilised; norms are suspended or turned on their heads. They thrust us into the grey zone between the two sides of a supposedly clear demarcation. We find ourselves in ambiguous spaces, somewhere between a past that is no longer valid and an ever-becoming future. Liminality characterises spiritual practices and social rituals as well as aesthetic, psychedelic, and other transformative experiences. It marks technological upheaval and social, cultural, and political change. In music, boundary-disturbing experiences and acts of transgression are perpetually negotiated and re-negotiated, be it through the lifestyles and identities associated with music cultures, in practices of intoxication and of altered states closely associated with music, its transcultural hybridity and digital fluidity, or in the multisensory experience of sound itself.

Such liminal spaces are zones whose limits and scope remain unknown. The liminal is the fundamental challenging of norms and identities. At the same time it is a place of heightened sensitivity, of undirected experimentation, and of new potential communities. As such, it is a contact zone with the “other,” the unconscious, and altered forms of being, which can trigger regenerative or transformative effects. In this respect, one can try to avoid them or actively seek them out and engage with them. In times of crisis, we are inevitably thrust into them. It isn’t difficult to identify the liminal nature of our present time, which is challenged on almost all fronts and scales by far-reaching processes of transformation such as climate change, post-democracy, re-nationalisation, globalisation, migration, hybridisation, or digitisation. All currently pressing conflicts demand a (re)negotiation of borders and demarcations, always confirming that the old is no longer possible and the new is not yet imaginable. The well-known and familiar no longer promise stability or certainty, but the solutions for an encouraging future often remain out of sight, or are only hinted towards on the horizon.

We are in between. Amidst ambivalence and perpetual shift, we drift without assurance nor certainty. How and in what form will we emerge? What will we encounter along the way? Is there anything beyond this liminal zone? As open as liminoid experiences can appear, and as unrestricted as liminal spaces may seem, they always remain tied to the notion of boundaries. Preoccupations with the liminal inevitably are entangled with borders—with the existence, perception, transgression, invalidation, and creation of demarcations of all kinds. And they prompt urgent questions about their political utilisation and economic exploitation. The celebration of liminality, hybridisation, and transgression is not enough in and of itself. Rather, praise should be supplemented with critical evaluation of potentials, ambivalences, trajectories, and exclusions. How do such experiences and practises affect political and cultural dichotomies? When do they merely serve to reinforce known power structures and when might they actually allow for gains in cultural freedom and permeability? Can transformative potential and the emergence of new ideas arise through liminal experiences, and if so, can they resist co-optation by market forces and political agendas? Can they aid nuanced self-awareness, reveal scope for action, or enable empathetic experiences? Is it enough to practice forms of experimental politics in a liminal space that has to make do without tangible utopias?”

You can find the details about the myriad day/ night program here

CTM also has some final events and concerts on sunday 2nd of february.

3hd Festival – Fluid Worlds, Berlin 22nd-27th of October 2019 https://bl.wiseup.de/festival-worlds-oktober/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/festival-worlds-oktober/?lang=en#respond Sat, 19 Oct 2019 10:06:38 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3719 Read the full article...]]> This year Berlins 3hd Festival is celebrating it’s 5th anniversary! 3hd Festival is organized by Berlin-based the interdisciplinary platform Creamcake since 2015.

I will join a panel talk at the festival on thursday 24th with the topic E-scape. Breaking the Trance at Postscheckamt (Hallesches Ufer 40–60). More details here

Here is the festivals announcement text of the crew:

“In celebrating its fifth anniversary and contemplating its own legacy as a scene-defining cross-disciplinary festival, this year’s “Fluid Wor(l)ds” examines the social and cultural narratives shaping its own identity, and that of its audience and participants. Running October 22 to 27, the program differentiates itself from mainstream institutions with an alternative canon. It’s one where fluency, imagination and adaptability is valued above the impossible desire for the constant, the rational, the rigid.

In this raw, liquid state, 3hd moves fluidly between spaces to generate and distribute its hybrid histories across digital networks, and through music, performance and visual art. Surfacing at HAU Hebbel am Ufer’s theater, Trauma Bar and Kino nightclub and cinema, and Postscheckamt’s postal bank tower-come-temporary exhibition, as well as online, invited artists focus on the potential for positive social change, transformation and communication at the point where sound, text and the image intersect. These are new worlds built with novel words.

By offering a multifocal view of these myriad world-making practices, 3hd invites us to engage with these stories by staking a claim within (its changing relationship to the) world. The only question is, which one?

The “Fluid Wor(l)ds” program builds on 3hd and organizers Creamcake’s role in redefining community and shaping queer history by highlighting the fresh perspectives of its favourite online-adjacent artists. The series of concerts, club nights and performances; readings, installations, a film program and an exhibition runs over six days, along with the “Embedded Narratives” online anthology. The latter cross-platform project marks five years of 3hd Festival, allowing the URL and IRL to spill out across disciplines, spaces, media and time, by resurrecting past commissions and connecting them with new ones.”

Earth Strike – There is no Planet B, 27th September 2019 Wien https://bl.wiseup.de/earth-strike-planet/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/earth-strike-planet/?lang=en#respond Fri, 27 Sep 2019 18:59:29 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3648 Read the full article...]]> Today a star march took place in Vienna from 3 points (Praterstern, Westbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof) to Karlsplatz. The demos passed symbolic places for politics (Ministry of Transport), economy (Chamber of Commerce) and science (House of the Sea). I joined one of the demonstration flows at Margaretenstraße. Surrounded by many U20 people, who chanted well-known chants (Antifaschista/ Anticapitalista) up to new songs and slogans, especially adapted to the climate topic, a very energetic stream of people moves on to Karlsplatz, where the demos meet for a rally with speeches and music. After about 40 minutes everyone moves in the direction of Heldenplatz. Various posters and demands are performed.

The police counted 30.000 participants, the organizers 80.000. Also in Innsbruck, Salzburg and Graz there were big demos and protests – as well as in other places throughout Austria.

It was the biggest demonstration for climate issues so far in the history of Austria.

Here some quotes from the organizers Earth Strike/ klimaprotest.at:

“We, the people of this earth, strike to save the planet and our future.

Whether young or old, studying or working, in college or retirement: on this day the world rises together to fight against the ongoing destruction of our planet.

 • We will no longer watch as the Earth’s natural resources are exploited for the profits of corporations.
 • We will no longer allow the burning of coal, oil and gas to further exacerbate the climate and environmental crisis.
 • We will no longer look away when the consequences of global warming hit the weakest members of our world community first!”

“We now say: STOP – There is NO Planet B. It is time to pause, interrupt everyday life and take to the streets! Put down the textbooks and the work. Turn off the machines. Lock down your companies and firms. Invite everyone to participate. Because if we continue business as usual, life on earth will have no future.

With this strike of the generations we loudly demand a turnaround in climate and environmental policy towards a sustainable and ecological society for all of us. All forces from civil society, politics, business and science must now be brought together to create the life-saving transformation!

Let us spark a new era and let the Earth Strike become even bigger, more colourful and louder than everything we’ve seen before.”

In September the dance piece Futurecore 2000 by the Viennese choreographer Gloria Höckner, who lives in Hamburg, can be seen at Kraftwerk Bille. On Friday we will talk about our perspectives on Hardcore Techno. Dates, see below. Here some excerpts of the info text:

“Inspired by the practice of rave, which appropriates abandoned places of the past like old factory halls and utopically charges them with music, the dance performance “Futurecore 2000 – All Beats Are Beautiful” transforms the 1,955 m² boiler hall of the disused “Kraftwerk Bille” into a place of post-humanist fictions. The piece is a choreographic examination of apocalyptic and utopian visions of the future within technoid music cultures and the posthumanistic perspectives on the body contained therein. The performers Marc Carrera, Gloria Höckner and Su Jin Kim as well as the sound artist Zoë McPherson enter the acoustic worlds of hardcore techno. In “Futurecore 2000 – All Beats Are Beautiful” they become laboratories for new sensory spaces. In the huge boiler hall of the old power plant, the audience wanders through scenarios in which human and non-human elements merge into ever new forms, creating fictitious worlds or their apocalyptic ends. We regard the currently reviving genre of hardcore techno as a musically embodied apocalyptic motif and search for new ways of relating to utopian sonifications of the body.”

AE is “one of the world’s largest stages for media art, a festival for digital music, a playground for the next generation, a showcase for creativity and innovation – Ars Electronica is a unique festival for art, technology and society”.

“In 2019, the festival turns 40 and celebrates its anniversary with the most extensive program in its history. “Out of the Box – The Midlife Crisis of the Digital Revolution” is the title of this year’s Ars Electronica, gathering the pioneers and groundbreakers of four decades of digital revolution as well as award-winning artists, leading scientists and influential contemporary developers in Linz. Together they trace the lines of digital development, identify where we stand today and outline how things will continue. The pulsating and inspiring center of this reflection and speculation with the means of art and science is for one last time POSTCITY. With its very special atmosphere, the huge and spectacular industrial architecture of this former postal distribution centre will once again shape the atmosphere and character of the festival. Further hotspots will be the recently completely redesigned Ars Electronica Center with its focus on Artificial Intelligence and the St. Florian Monastery, whose impressive architecture provides the perfect setting for the first ever “AI x Music Festival“ organized jointly with the European Commission.”

Review ChaosCommunicationCamp 08/2019 @Ziegeleipark, Germany, Earth, Milky Way https://bl.wiseup.de/rueckblick-ziegeleipark-mildenberg/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/rueckblick-ziegeleipark-mildenberg/?lang=en#respond Mon, 02 Sep 2019 01:27:46 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3531 Read the full article...]]> The CCCamp2019 takes place every four years and was materialized in August in Brandenburg. As a lecture on “20 Years of Camp” (subtitles available) clearly showed, the CCCamp is a fusion of “open air and hacker culture”, if not rave and hack.

One of the active members of the Chaos Computer Club Hamburg, Tim, was present in the 1990s music scene in Berlin, where club events started professionalizing, and the first big raves got organized by Hamburgers and Berliners. So he got to know the Pyons. Tim then started the first camp together with the Pyons – Andre and Markus – in 1999. In the video/ lecture they “look back on the history of the camp and the special challenges in the planning and logistics of the event. The first camp on a horse meadow in Altlandsberg was a feat of strength for the CCC. Based on the 1993 (Hacking at the End of the Universe, HEU) and 1997 (Hacking In Progress, HIP) Dutch camps, an attempt was made to create an event that combined the spirit of the hacker club and tek with the strong influence of the techno open-air scene of the time. Encouraged by the successful move of the Chaos Communication Congress to Berlin at the end of 1998, the club accepted the challenges and developed a fruitful cooperation with the Pyonen, in which each group could play to its strengths. (…) In the end, the first camp succeeded in laying the foundation for the event it is today: a place of freedom and creativity that offers the necessary space for fun with the equipment, aesthetics and communication” (video info text).

For Markus, the camp and C3 have become more and more political in recent years and this was symbolized for him by the Anti-Fa flag on the chimney of the camp (and elsewhere on the area). Because Mildenberg is Brandenburg, where the AFD is prominent and is already mobilizing for the upcoming elections. Tim mentions that the club has always been political but that it realized that today it is more important to communicate this to the outside world. It was also due to the fact that Camp and Congress had succeeded in networking with and towards other cultural areas. The camp is now more colourful not only because of the colourful light, but also because it no longer only consists of the local branches of the association, but also has international guests, as well as people from theatre, art, culture and activism.

For more details on the history of the camp check out the Video.

Among these people from art, culture and activism were some from our village cluster 1Komona; already at the C3s in Leipzig Reclaim Club Culture was part of the new assembly. Unfortunately, most Komona members are not yet so familiar with their group, and with the procedures of the C3 events as Komona is still young. That’s probably one of the reasons why there were hardly any people on site on Tuesday and not much set up yet. The Komona motto “If You Are Komona You Can Make It Work” hasn’t completely translated into the identities of the participants yet, but the Villages have tried to fulfill their roles and tasks appropriately. Thus, while the official camp program was already starting, our village and a social structure consisting of many small groups was stil in the making. These were:

The game consulting, the anarchists, Mobile Info Tent, Heart of Code, IT Kollektiv, SSB, NixOS, Postapokalyptik Schrott Workshop, no name group, AFRA Hacker Space Berlin, Queer Feminist Geeks, Hispagatos, Chateons (miau!), Librehosters, Röschens Räterepublik, Reclaim Club Culture as well as other groups that came later or were forgotten now.

Why, who becomes part of Komona is not completely transparent, but obviously because you are not part of any existing club/assembly/village. Thus the status of the Komona cluster in the camp as a whole is that of Newbees, and that also became obvious by the camp site that was assigned to us. There were hardly any trees and a lot of heat from early morning on that made it hard to get a decent amount of sleep. The toilets had no water in the beginning and later it was only installed for the toilets, hands/washing had to be done somewhere else. Sounds not like a big deal, but it was a serious restriction, if one wanted to fulfill the hygiene rules to some extent, also because some Komona members had been to a festival before, where this had not worked out and therefore it had been stopped due to health danger. Also dust was a constant companion.

At the camp there were two lecture tents where the lectures and talks were recorded and streamed, this main program had a separate Schedule. The Village 3 Headed Monkeys also had a stage and filmed/ streamed, curated an independent programme. As well as all other Villages, which announce their events as Self Organized Sessions, which can be called up separately or in a einem Complete Calendar abrufen.

1Komana offered the following sessions:

AfD-Plakate entsorgen!, Anarchist Networking Party w/ Las Vegas Lady and Planète Concrète, Anti Capitalist CTF, Arranged Marriage, CCClasse – bezahlen für Arbeit? / CCClass – to pay for work?, Camp Pride Orga Meeting, 1st (open for all), Cryptpad, DIY reading session / DIY lese session, Ethical hosting: where are your data?, Hosting for non-geeks: communication needs, How to collaborate better, How to talk to the badge – a (micro-)python introduction for BEGINNERS!, Introduction to infoshop, Lh lightning talks, Meet librehosters, Mental Training Against Sexual Harassment, Movie screening „weird Germany series“ – day 2 : Kasper Hauser goes techno, Movies screening „weird Germany series“ – day 2 : The old Kasper Hauser, Networking Basics on the Command Line, Patterns for Decentralization, Postapokalyptic jewellery, Run your own Matrix server, Sticker Exchange Party, TechCoop Meetup, Terraform and Docker to selfhost, Trickmisch – Trickfilme erstellen, YunoHost workshop: install your own!

And others like Club culture against the monopoly of Facebook, Digital Activism Training – Infrastructuring for the upcoming rave protests for climate by RCC . The probably greatest session of our Village, if not the camp, the Chaos Ballet, initiated by lone fighters of the groups Reclaim Club Culture und Extinction Rebellion , was offered at the sportive time 5am, but also spontaneous performances were possible. The participative and performative nature of this session aimed to feel arguments rather than reproduce felt arguments. Other important keywords were: Ballet, Revolution, Emma Goldmann, Trampoline, Chaos, Arguments, Feelings, Feminism, Gravity, Drahti (the name of the trampoline).

The decentralized RCC office was open in the afternoons, if not in use anyway. The second, decentralized information board of Komona and the existential sign painting station was next to the RCC office. In our deliberately decentralized village lots of activities developed and it wasn’t a suprise as separatist currents built up with the days. In the night from Friday to Saturday “Upper” and “Lower” Komona had been divided by a border.

One can imagine that when Komona already had such an oversupply of activities and dynamics, what was going on at the camp in general. There were also several lakes in the area, a small marina and you could rent boats. Of course music was also part of the camp, although not enough and too monothematic – officially on two floors (which was actually only one because when the Rockmore Booth stopped, the Chemistry Lounge started), these had their own timetable, the Abfahrplan

Sadly any unofficial music program – that was once characteristic of the C3s – was stopped due to loudness problems, camp rules and lack of emathy, which was regrettable and would need be solved differently in the future. 1Komona had an Anarchist Networking Party on Friday evening and the dance party/ DJ program had to be carried out as a Silent Disko after midnight. To the complete disillusionment of the DJs (including myself). Over the days, however, listening to music via headphones became a habit, if not a luxurious trademark of Komona.

Or you did it like the Social Distortion Protocol Village – early in the evening organized 2 hours of dancing. Or you took a walk with the sound system robot. Fortunately, at least at Milliway‘s there were concerts and DJs who were well equipped. Even more exaggerated in terms of entertainment, but effective and still late at night there was a bar & club tent from the self-proclaimed Bavarian Amts-Königreich. But also the illegal and clever Micro-Berghain offered an alternative to late hours. It was located next to an uninhabited non-place, which is why there were no complaints from the friendly but resolute CrewCrew (the all female camp security). Or they failed because of the tough bouncers…

Because so much was going on and the time so short I didnt attend most of the streamed talks and presentations. To check it out later, which never works, because there are always too many videos worth seeing. Here is a selection of what I did see and recommend:

Hambacher Forst #hambibleibt resistance against opencast mining in Germany – the climate catastrophe and life in a forest occupation

#Fusionbleibt How the Fusion Festival was able to successfully defend itself against police presence

How to act against digital sexist violence “Not to be assigned to the phenomenon of cybercrime” (Response of the Federal Government)

Exposing Systems of Power and Injustice 5 Years of Disruption Network Lab

Robotron a tech opera – computers & the GDR

Privacy: An Unequally Distributed Resource A Study of Privacy as Privilege in Our World

Social-ecologic dimensions of digitalization

There was also a lot of excitement about the Card10, which had been preordered and paid by enough participants, so that after a few days everyone could still get one. The camp participants increasingly shared this wrist feature. Or you could see participants working on the gadget with their computer. This measuring device will keep some camp visitors busy, as the beautiful toy has to be understood halfway at first. That’s probably why there were some sessions, workstations and main talks dealing with the Card10:

card10 assembly in 4min

card10 Badge „the 2019 camp badge, bio monitor, wrist worn POV device, and everything else your imagination comes up with. This year’s 0b10nd edition of the camp badge is card10. It comes packed with biosensors and can talk to many devices with BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). As usual it comes with some space to extend it with further electronics and this time a programming interface that is even easier to use, so you can individualize your card10 and pick up some new skills on the way“.

There were also contributions to the hyped topic AI, where the money is currently flowing, and our neighbors from Artes Mobiles made their artistic contribution: „A spherical object serves as a volumetric display to visualize speculative artificial intelligence in the form of sound-image associations. The object consists of a seemingly chaotic heap of led stripes in which three-dimensional shapes, patterns and structures of light appear. The visual structures are produced by the neural network through the association with sounds“.

In addition to the tech workshops and talks that were to be expected, you could go to naked tea session, walks or baths with other campers, etch stainless steel (dressed!), take part in the Gameboy Music Contest, solder synthesizers, build keyboards, write letters to activists in jail, shop SIM cards and Card10 spare parts or chant that Pluto is indeed a Planet. Even soft ice cream with chocolate sauce and whipped cream was on sale…

The Salzamt was responsible for complaints of all kinds, which had to be submitted in written form in accordance with tradition (Austria rules!). This was because the Salt Office/ Salzamt was a customary authority in the Middle Ages that supervised salt mining and the trade in salt. The salt trade was an important monopoly in the Habsburg Empire. The salt offices were an authority directly subordinated to the ruling dynasty. The word “Salzamt” lives on in Austria as an expression of a non-existent authority. If there is no legal recourse against an official decision, one can “complain to the salt office”. In case of emergencies outside the opening hours one could call “SALZ (DECT, 7259)”. Those who didn’t get rid of everything here could go even deeper. And exchange their anger. For the mental hygiene and bad feelings despite optimal conditions there was then h Angerbooth/ Anger Exchange Point of the Haecksen – with a solemn reading of the remaining anger on the last day (very sad I missed that opportunity, I am willing to admit I had some complaints, and would have loved to exchange them).

Yo and when our village was finally finished, the last signs hung up and kitchen shifts provided, it was already time for de-asembling again. That was also the hottest day, and those who hadn’t understood the full range of the ice machine’s effects an necessity and why it was so well signposted, understood it now. Have you ever seen such a great ice-machine in your life?

In this unkown future of 1Komona this new and cute assembly will need more people and cyborgs to set up and dismantle. Ice cubes will be provided. Build it up, tear it down and drink it cool(ed)!

Without heaven and angels nothing moves at the camp, that’s why we were reminded to thank angels! Thank you!

Who was clever enough send a postcard home via the only true and beautiful postal office: Greetings from 1Komona, C3 Universe!

After a felt eternity, countless appearances, several mixtapes and digital releases, the debut album “Tschuschistan” (Springstoff) by ESRAP was released on 28 June 2019. The siblings ESRA and ENES ÖZMEN break as a duo not only with gender stereotypes, because she raps and he sings. At the same time they also create realworld utopias such as Tschuschistan, a place where everyone is welcome. The release concert took place at Yppenplatz in Ottakring, a district of Vienna with a high proportion of immigrant residents and revealed a Tschuschistan that builds on the lived experience of diverse groups of Vienna citizens coming together and it celebrated exactly this circumstance. It was probably the concert with the most diverse audience Vienna has seen for a while. The duo explained in a conversation with Bianca Ludewig how this came about.

Using tracks and videos, the emergence of these styles will be sketched and their references to the sound system culture or gender aspects highlighted.

I will present mainly take-outs of the last lectures what didn’t happen due to lack of time. And just on request, the topics mentioned above, if there is still time ;-) It overlaps anyway. I would like to do without long introductions, what hardcore techno is. I’d rather talk about the art projects relating to hardcore e.g. of Henrike Naumann or Merle Vorwald, or about hardcore in Vienna. I will present photos, videos and tracks for collective listening. Those present are encouraged to talk about their perspective or their experiences. Questions, additions, anecdotes are welcome! Takeover Street Art & Skateboarding @ Wien Museum July 5th-September 1st 2019 https://bl.wiseup.de/takeover-street-skateboarding/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/takeover-street-skateboarding/?lang=en#respond Fri, 05 Jul 2019 15:35:19 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3437 Read the full article...]]> The exhibition “Takeover” on skateboarding and street art opened yesterday with the vernissage at the “old” Wien Museum on Vienna’s Karlsplatz. The exhibition is a kind of temporary use before the Wien Museum is rebuilt and enlarged. The exhibition on “Red Vienna” and staff have already moved to Felderstraße 6-8 in the 1st district. Yesterday there was a colorful and mixed audience at the opening, one that is rather unusual for the Wien Museum. It can also be assumed that it was seldom so crowded at the opening of the museum. The visitors were scattered all over Karlsplatz as an inspection of the interiors was quickly done, unless one wanted to skate at the installed skate area inside. Also it was crowed inside with newly arriving visitors until the end.

Since I have lived in Berlin for a long time and have reported about graffiti (for example Backjumps, City of Names, Jazzstyle Corner) and have curated exhibitions/ festivals on the topic in Hamburg myself, the “Street Art” part of the exhibition disappointing. Graffiti (and to a lesser extent skateboarding) in the interior is always problematic and a challenge, because here comes together what does not belong together. Nevertheless, there are best practice examples, solutions that are less problematic than others. These practices seem largly unknown in Vienna, which has never been an important place or reference for the international scene so far. And this becomes also obvious through the (setup of the) exhibition. However, due to the temporary use, it was at least possible to apply works directly to the walls. Two works were attached to the outer façade.

Nonetheless “Takeover” is something special for Vienna, because graffiti or skateboarding (to my knowledge) have not yet been exhibited in the Wien Museum as city culture or folk art and have therefore been recognized or valued. Of course, there are also very distinctive characters moving in these scenes and it is certainly not easy to reconcile all the actors and to overcome the usual institutional hurdles according to their needs. This exhibition shows the Wien Museum and other museums that want to master such a task and still have a lot to learn. But it is a beginning.

Much more sophisticated and successful than the “Street Art” part was the skateboarding area. This may also have something to do with the fact that fewer protagonists*were involved here, or that some people had thought up a concept on everyones behalf and had apparently already realized a photo book “Freizeit Baustelle” and transferred parts of it to the exhibition space.

Also the video documentation – that is essential for both scenes – had been considered by the skaters, and was absent at the graffiti area. Unfortunately, also in the skate area a wild confusion of wall paintings was applied, eventhough this is also the case outdoors on illegal spots, where nobody curates either, but such an exhibition is an opportunity to discuss and realize conceptual approaches together, as it sometimes happens with legal walls, halls of fame or gallaries. I was told there had been problems with the ventilation and the painting of the skate park could not be fully realized as planned.

Also the first event of the supporting programme, a discussion on the faszination of (illigal) street art “the myth of graffiti” showed that Graffiti is more or less an unkown territory in Vienna. One finds amazing walls near Donau and Donaukanal, also trains and walls near the tracks are frequently painted, but one can assume that a lot of it is done by visiting graffiti writers from other countries. This is also how the first graffiti appeared on a train in Vienna in the 1990s as the discussion revealed. Oldschool rapper and graffitiwriter Skero recounted that he was one of the first writers back then and one of the few who would travel abroad to get information about graffiti and brought this knowledge back to Austria. A pressumption is that the Vienna Graffiti scene never made proper use of the incredible international network that existed within Graffiti since its inception or better after spreading beyond the borders of New York and US in the late 1980s. Maybe this was due to the temptation of the comfort zone or to the Austrian/ Vienna condition mentioned by some people I know or have interviewed that Vienna was grey and dull in the 1980s until the mid-1990s and there was no information on things that were of interest in other European cities already (like Graffiti or Techno). Further film screenings or discussions will happen within the next weeks and might shed more light on Skateboarding and Streetart in Vienna.

Rahmenprogramm

Text of Wien Museum:

“Vandalism or art? Street art and skateboarding polarize. They are at once creative and destructive, art and irritation, sport and lifestyle. As late as the 2000s, they were mainly considered a nuisance; today, they have the status of pop cultural phenomena. Street art and skateboarding are seen as invigorating elements of urban life, even motors for tourism and economic development.

We invite prominent protagonists to transform the museum, allowing everyone the opportunity to discover the scenes in entirely new ways. The building is split into two zones: on the ground floor, it’s DIY; on the first floor, there’s a “Hall of Fame.” Vienna is the focus. More than 30 artists – all stalwarts of Vienna’s street art scene – take possession of the museum’s walls. Old exhibition furniture is turned into a skate park using concrete. There is much to discover and much to do – from skateboarding courses to workshops on various street art techniques. Please, join us!” (Homepage Wien Museum)

Rediscovered: Documentary “The Empty Citycenter”, Hito Steyerl (1998) https://bl.wiseup.de/wiederentdeckt-steyerls-dokumentation/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/wiederentdeckt-steyerls-dokumentation/?lang=en#respond Mon, 20 May 2019 21:38:57 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3327 Read the full article...]]> At university we watched Hito Steyerl’s documentary “Die Leere Mitte” in a seminar, for the work on an article I wanted to quote now some passages from the film and watched it again. 2010 it was already a document of contemporary history, to see it eight years later was just as affective as the first time, that’s why I wanted to write a review about it this time. So then – here we go!

Hito Steyerl is filmmaker, artist and theorist. She deals with questions of postcolonial criticism, representation and feminist perspectives. Usually in the form of essayistic documentaries, media-installations, texts and other artistic forms. The art magazine “ArtReview” lists Steyerl 2017 on the annual “Power100” list as one of the most influential female artist in the international art scene. This was not the case in 1998 when she made this documentary, but the documentary is surley a reason why she made it that far.

It is an important analytic contribution about contemporary Berlin and the question of how cities exclude and whom – is Steyerl’s “Die Leere Mitte”, whose starting point is the construction site at Potsdamer Platz at the end of the 1990s, which was the biggist construction side of Europe at that time, where the death strip used to be located. A central theme of the documentation is that where borders are torn down, new ones immediately emerge. The focus is also on the connections between political power and architecture, as well as issues of exclusion. Using the history of the construction site as a narrative, where until the end of the Second World War the centre of ‘German’ power was located and afterwards the nothingness of the inner-German border as a manifestation of the Cold War, the documentary illustrates how new manifestations of power arise. And thus also new forms of exclusion, which seem to repeat history in a kind of variation. The film unmasks the mythology that the fall of the Berlin Wall brought “freedom” for the citizens of Berlin or Germany.

At the Potsdamer Platz construction site, Dong Yang, a Berlin student of Asian origin who had been beaten by rights, is interviewed by the filmmaker. He says: “After the fall of the Berlin Wall the Germans were very excited, I have the feeling that they have forgotten what they are. It would be better for the foreigners if the wall would still be here”.

The documentation is blending historical retrospects with present events related to the construction site.

A narrator reports that after the fall of the wall, the empty strip between the walls was sold to investors. After two months life returns to the empty center. Protesters came with tents occupying the death strip, because – as one of them explains “Daimler-Benz got the site for nothing and we want to protest against this situation that only the richest of the rich get again these historical places in the city’s center. There won’t be any more room for people with different attitudes and life-styles, it’s all about money”.

Towards the end the occupiers of the Death Strip are asked what they want to achieve? They answer that they want to have a say in what is being built here in the center of their city. A few scenes later a young Chinese woman says that the wall has now gone, but that the purpose of this wall was to regulate territorial relations between people and in that way it is still existing. The voiceover is reporting that while Germany is reuniting and the former nomansland is being opened for market opportunities, that the borders elsewhere are consolidated: several hundred people die on the borders of Europe. They drown, suffocate, freeze to death or die of thirst. And also within Germany national liberated zones are being put up. Historically the construction of borders can be interpreted as a tradition in this area around Potsdamer Platz. Fortunately we a left with a quotation by Kracauer and a few humorous moments in the credits, so that one is not left completely disillusioned.

Strongly recommend!

If we don’t get resonance, we don’t get opportunities.
Then we do not exist.

“Christiana Perschon’s documentary SHE IS THE OTHER GAZE presents a series of interviews with five female visual artists: Renate Bertlmann, Linda Christanell, Lore Heuermann, Karin Mack, Margot Pilz. Most of these artists started their careers in the 1970s, in Vienna, and the film explores the relation between their practice and feminism. As we see them working and performing in front of the camera or commenting on some of their pieces, they recall the difficulties, constraints and resistances encountered at the beginning of their paths.

Filmgarten pressphoto

SHE IS THE OTHER GAZE has a unified tone (minimalist, drenched in white, without music), while building each segment as a particular collaboration between the artist and the filmmaker, in an intergenerational dialogue whose traces are visible on screen. Equally, each one of the artists featured has a unique approach, a specific artistic vision, but their trajectories have all been informed, in one way or another, by women’s issues: the fight against patriarchal structures, the lack of visibility, an intimate relation to the objects of everyday domesticity, the difficulties in negotiating family life and artistic ambitions”. donaufestival – New Society 26th of April to 5th of May in Krems (AT) https://bl.wiseup.de/donaufestival-society-april/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/donaufestival-society-april/?lang=en#respond Thu, 25 Apr 2019 22:01:30 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3294 Read the full article...]]> When it is spring time in Vienna people who are into performance and edgy music take a trip to Krems an hour away from Vienna to attend the annual donaufestival. The festival frames its linup by a theme which is this year “new society”. This seems a bit overexcited at first glance, or is it an ironic take?

The artistic director Thomas Edlinger explains: “Do vegans and fraternity boys, super rich and refugees even live in the same society? A nexus of the generally binding – core culture and mainstream society aside – is not easy to find anymore”. The faults of society stand in marked contrast to the promises of equality, which have fallen by the wayside in favour of the liberalisation of capital, consumerism, and morals. The media says it everyday: Here, the high flyers – there, the sinking ships. Here, those from here – there, those from somewhere else. Here, toxic masculinity – there, the non-binary avant-garde.”

He believes that “resistance is forming against this disintegration, building upon community instead of society.” And draws upon the conflicts between leftist who promote an educative turn through establishing safe zones while populists advertise that they can just stay how they are, fighting feminist or postcolonialist attitudes.

“Both progressive and reactionary we-formations and exclusions take place in a networked world with no outside”, and connects this to our mediated data world and that “the absolutism of data has its own plans”. And what makes the contemporary a new society is that we are increasingly communicating with machines.

“How this all ends? Perhaps a ‘we’ of tomorrow will be more about collective activities than collective identities.”

The conclusion seems somewhat modest. Does he talk about the presented art works and that they adress or perform those “collective activities”? Because attending the festival can be of course a collective activity but within a very limited part of society.

The day tickets are 35€ which is a lot of money (for some 35% of the Austrians who have no savings and running short on money to cover their daily costs as was just recently reported in the news) also adding the costs to come, stay and go there – as the smallest group of attendees are coming from Krems. Also the taste, mix of music and performance, is more burgeois societies taste, than mainstream. Though some of the presented music is sipping more and more from niche into mainstream culture.

But nonetheless for a small community of music and performance nerds it’s definatly worth the money and effort to come to Krems and discuss the latest ideas and projects that have been curated along this line of “new society”. And I guess I must be one of them.

Musicians include: Holly Herndon, Giant Swan, Gudrun Gut, Katharina Ernst, Arabrot, Khalab, AAA or PlanningtoRock on the first weekend. The second weekend presents works by Lucrecia Dalt, Ark Noir, Godflesh, Eartheater, Fatima Al Qadiri, Kate Tempest and Apparat.

The performance programme offers Stefan Kaegi & Rimini Protokoll, Ligia Lewis or Karin Pauer & Aldo Giannotti. The programme is completed by artworks/ installations and a small theory & film section.

This book documents the former arts and music space mo.ë in Vienna and discusses issues related to gentrification and urban planning. It reflects on the invasive displacement of functioning arts spaces that are put up by the unpaid work of dedicated artists and activists which eventually leads to a valorization of the property and their seemingly inevitable eviction. This is how urban planning works today.

The publication gives witness to these processes directly from the field – refelected and documented by those who are affected by these unregulated neoliberal dynamics. The documentation is complemented by scientific texts that contextualize the phenomenon in a wider perspective.

I have written a text for this publication which deals with the relevance of music and art spaces for the city.

Sound system culture is used by the project to describe the historical and contemporary cultural currents that give shape to the grass-roots dance music scenes that also function as social movements. These socially engaged movements are important because they are very often the motors of information exchange, skill sharing, community building, democratic reform, innovation and creativity.

After a year of research and organizing the final event of the project will happen under the titel “Radical Roots of Rave” celebrating a night of diversity, multiple music genres, photo-exhibitions, live-performances, workshops, talks and beautiful sounds.

For the second year we joined forces with Reclaim Club Culture (RCC) at the congress which was again an exceptional experience!

For those who don’t know: This Hacker Meeting is organized by the Chaos Computer Club which was founded in 1981. The annual congress was launched in 1984. In the past 8 years the Hacker Meeting has grown rapidly to host in 2018 about 17.000 attendees in the Leipzig congress centre.

At the congress very diverse people come together and work collectively. The reason why it is constantly growing is the fact that computers and the internet become more and more omnipresent, but also because there is a growing conscience that change is only possible if we bring our knowledge together. Technology can only be improved if it is analyzed in its social and political context. The driving force at the congress is the believe that sharing knowledge is crucial today and that the purpose of technologies like the internet can bring people closer together as Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Chaos macht Schule) explains: “We need to restructure the internet and how the world is organized. If we ask for less we can’t accomplish anything”. Also Nexus (Falk Garbsch, spokesperson ccc) stresses that they want to reinvent the internet: “We need to discuss what the internet of the future should be like and how it can remain a free and open space where society can evolve. How it can become an added value for society – a space of meaning with benefits for everybody.”

A huge difference to other similar events or conferences is that the congress is organized and only possible due to an ingenious volunteer systems (heaven/ angels). Unlike other festivals/ events/ conferences where volunteering becomes more and more a norm and a habit (often due to limited funding and finances) only few people are volunteering compared to paid speakers and artists or paying visitors, at the congress most participants pay and volunteer. In this sense it is a true DIY event which happens on a very professional level. This makes the congress also independent of state funding and sponsoring. In its clever and elaborated structure, logistics and organization the congress remains a work of art in itself.

The main structure of the congress is made up by its assemblies, these are local hacker clubs and groups who design and organize an individual space where activities like workshops, talks or presentations happen. Activities are linked to issues like technology, society, arts or to food and drink (inofficial program). This is framed by a main lineup of talks, presentations, performances (official program). This is accompanied by a kids space, an arts space and a music program. That the majority of the attendees contribute to the program or the organizational structure creates an event that is based on contribution rather than consumption and this makes the vibe of the congress so special.

This year there was a second assembly-hall opened and two new stages were established as a part of the main program, which means that the presentations are filmed and archived at media.ccc. Also a new clubbing area Discodrama was build. New was also a wine-bar at the CCL, which was great as before only beer and cocktails at selected places where at offer. The Chaos Film Society screened almost all day and night its programm. The cinema and surrounding area was again designed excellently by the Kollektiv Artes Mobiles. The Komona assembly had also many new features like its own silent radio – all.fm, where djs were playing on air and you could get headphones and take thwe musik with you. A sauna was build in the parking lot.

Reclaim Club Culture was again part of the new assemby Komona and offered this year once more a series of workshops where club culture was connected with critical discourse and activism (touching issues like transnational activism, funding activism, producing demo-raves, agency of collectivity). Our contribution was a workshop on “subcultures and urban transformation: data, archive, research, hacking”. RCC also made it into the main programm with Rosa Rave and a talk about “protest, club culture and antifaschist resistance“.

Find Rosa Rave and other video links at the end.

I hardly made it this year to any talks or workshops. Nonetheless I want to mention some highlights like the screening of “All Creatures Welcome” of filmmaker Sandra Trostel. The documentary “sketches a utopian image of society in the digital era. Accompanied by the appeal to ‘use hacking as a mindset,’ the viewers immerse themselves, together with the filmmaker, in a documentary adventure game and explore the world of digital communities at the events held by the Chaos Computer Club” (infotext at media ccc). This marks the official open source release of the movie which was shown the months before at some film festivals around Europe and is now available at media.ccc. Also a remix project accompanies the release where the complete footage can be remixed and alternate versions created.

The musical highlight at Discodrama was a set of the dutch producer Joeri Jungschlager (also known as the Breakcore Panda) and his project RK9 where he presents a hybrid of liquid drum & bass, crossbreed and breakcore. He is also a developer working on OpenDJ, a project that aims to build a opensource tabletop mediaplayer allowing djs to do more with their equipment than just dj. And providing a building block for smart clubs. Another heyday was the hooligan/ techno/ rave dj set of Oliotronix at Compeiler which incoroporates gameboy DMG and various electronic noise machines. She delivered an eclectic set with a compelling stage performance. Unfortunately there have still been very few female* artists playing, especially on the Discodrama main floor. Apart of that it can be concluded that the crowd at the congress is very diverse and I noticed especially an increase of queer and transgender people attending the congress.

Hopefully next year I will be able to attend some of the congresses classics like the crypto party, the lockpicking workshop, a DIY electronics jewlery workshop, solder my own synth, get me a Chaospate/ mentor (someone who shows new people whats going on), attend the Haecksen happy hour, visit the diaspora* assembly, write a chaos post to the c-base assembly or enter the race track with one of the wonderful DIY vehicles.

The Heroines of Sound Festival has set itself the task of (re)discovering female protagonists in music and increasing the public presence of their music. The goal of all Heroines events is to make the works of women pioneers of electronic music accessible to a wider public. Thus, audiences have the opportunity to discover connections between early heroines and women composers active today in contemporary music and electronic performance.

By making the often forgotten and underappreciated quality and diversity of female artists in the field of electronic music more visible and audible, the Heroines of Sound Festival opens up new perspectives for an analysis of historical and current strategies of female musical practice.

Reaching far beyond contemporary music circles, the Heroines of Sound Festival has attracted broad interest and brings a young audience in contact with cutting-edge musical perspectives.

With a long-term goal of strengthening the proportion of woman artists in the music branch both nationally and internationally, since 2014, together with Heroines Editions, the festival has presented over 80 woman artists from 20 different countries, including events in Aarhus, Den Haag and Istanbul.

Heroines of Sound aims for sustainability. Beyond the ongoing festival activity, the format is networked with a wide array of players and active in initiating events and discussions. Going beyond the standard festival circuit, the festival is linked with many partners, establishing new events and sparking debate. Since 2014 Heroines of Sound collaborated with the internationally active network/portal female:pressure, Ableton Loop (Berlin),the University of the Arts Graz (AT), the IMA Institute for Media Archeology (AT), Freiburg Music Academy (DE), Academy for Music and Theatre Leipzig (DE), Borusan Music House (TR), GMEM Marseille (FR), TodayArt Festival (NL). In 2015 the Festival was awarded a two-year supporting grant from the Berlin Senate.

ABOUT FEMALE:PRESSURE

female pressure is an international network of female, transgender and non-binary artists in the fields of electronic music and digital arts founded by Electric Indigo: from musicians, composers and DJs to visual artists, cultural workers and researchers. A worldwide resource of talent that can be searched after criteria like location, profession, style or name. “Why are there so few women active in the electronic music scene?” – each one of us has heard this question a thousand times… Here is the answer: It’s not our number, it’s about how and if we are recognized!

female:pressure intends to strengthen networking, communication and representation – a standard instrument to obtain information about artists, contact them, and find out about other, maybe less known women in electronic music all around the globe. Every artist listed in this database is able to keep her personal entry up-to-date. The network comprises over 2250 members from 75 countries as at August 2018.

If you want to be part of female:pressure don’t hesitate to send an e-mail to: infoATfemalepressureDOTnet.

FOR THE STUDY OF POPULAR MUSIC (IASPM D-A-CH)

University of Bern & Bern University of the Arts
Partner: Norient – Network for Local and Global Sounds and Media

We will do a panel at the conference: Club Cultures between difference, representation and cosmopolitism (Club Cultures zwischen Differenz, Repräsentation und Kosmopolitismus)

Stefanie Alisch (Berlin): Kuduro, Tarraxo, Afrohouse – Postcolonial Schizophonia in Luanda, Lissabon and the world?

Bianca Ludewig (Vienna): Experimental electronic music festivals in Europe: Discourse and conflicts on representation and power relations

Dahlia Borsche (Berlin): National identities in EDM. A comparison of Mexico and South Africa

General Info: With the topic of this conference, we aim to focus popular music studies on global interrelations and power dynamics inherent in the making, performance, distribution, and (re-)presentation of all forms of popular music. The papers promise to give important insights on various aspects of this crucial field of research. We are convinced that by tackling these issues in more detail, and by paying more attention to extant imbalances and inequalities, we can contribute to a better understanding of popular music-making and listening in our globally connected, but still very much neocolonial world.

Keynote: Dr Jenny Fatou Mbaye (City University London)

It was very important to us to widen our focus beyond the borders of academia and beyond our European viewpoint. In collaboration with Norient we therefore invited two artists who experience and engage with the aforementioned matters directly in their music. We are delighted to welcome Umlilo from South Africa
and Ali Gul Pir from Pakistan at our conference. They will be present throughout the conference and will also offer a short artistic intervention in response to the conference topic (Umlilo on Friday and Ali Gul Pir on Saturday).

Norient will create conference report in the format of a podcast.

More about the theme/ issues:

In Nigeria, the high pressure to follow the copyright rules of the globalized pop music market restrains the use of samples in hip hop culture. In Egypt, young musicians have no credit cards, leaving them without access to the online music market. In Europe, second and third generation migrants discuss their non-European backgrounds and European identities in songs and tracks. And U.S.-produced Korean pop music (K-Pop) increasingly rivals Korean-produced K-Pop in its concern for authentic presentation.

Issues of power, position, access, and representation have shaped the production, distribution, and reception of popular music and continue to do so today. The three-day interdisciplinary conference Pop – Power – Positions highlights popular music’s embeddedness in a global world. It seeks to uncover and scrutinize the risks, challenges, and potentials of power structures, positioning, and (re)presentations in popular music. The analysis of global, postcolonial structures plays a central role in this endeavour. To date, however, music – and popular music in particular – has only rarely been studied using postcolonial perspectives.

Postcolonialism refers not only to the historical fact of colonialism and its political, geographical, cultural, and economic impact on the countries and regions involved. Rather, postcolonial studies deal with all aspects of cultural diversity, ethnic and cultural difference, and their related power structures. Colonialism as well as postcolonialism refer to hierarchies that are enacted and produced through the construction of the Other and bring about and enforce debateable concepts of representation such as gender, race, ethnic group, nation, class, and culture. In this regard, the effects of (post)colonialism can be detected not only in former colonialized and colonising countries and regions, but also in those which at first sight do not have a colonial heritage, for example Switzerland. From its beginnings, popular music has been produced and performed in and within (post)colonial (power) structures. Postcolonial traces are, according to Johannes Ismaiel-Wendt, inherent in any popular music (2011). Current productions of popular music in different countries show that (post)colonial conditions live on in popular music, especially in a globalised world, and that musicians as well as recipients react in various ways to this situation.

The conference focuses on (global) power relations and representations of race, cultural difference, ethnicity, gender, class, and nation, including the changes and subversive strategies these may involve.

Festival for Adventurous Electronic Music + Arts

Unsafe+Sounds wants to investigate the interrelatedness of the fundamental changes in our environment and aesthetics, and look for apt noises for our disturbed existence. Under the banner of “Brutal Times”, we gather workers from the musical frontiers to find some medication for this pathological time. We believe these are to be found in the poetics of catharsis and physical affection; in neurotic, transgressive, tender, psychoacoustic, and obscure approaches.

50 artists can be seen in 7 days spread over 10 days in different venues in Vienna. About the book/ from book back cover:

-1818 First edition of Mary Shelley’s classic: Frankenstein

– 2018 Frankenstein gone mad: the many horrifying uses of technology, such as Web 2.0 that encourages you to give your time and personal information up to faceless IT companies or worse…
This book is a mashup of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, videogames and Internet culture, of chiptune music, galvinism, taffelmuzik, real life accounts of ’90s gabber rave parties in Italy and a celebration of Bologna’s finest weirdo label SONIC BELLIGERANZA, whose 17 years of existence (2000-2017) this volume celebrates with 17 texts.

The author, having whistled countless 8-bit versions of famous pop songs and delighted his ears with chip-tune covers of black metal songs and classical music, now extends micro-music aesthetics to literature with this remix of Mary Shelley’s classic.

The presentation will be followed by a low-resolution séance through which will be evoked the spirit of corpse reviver Giovanni Aldini (1762-1834), credited with having inspired The Modern Prometheus. Aldini will tell a compressed version of the original Frankenstein story, exposing its language to retro-gaming jargon and simplifying the plot as if it were an arcade game. The aforementioned 18th-century electrifier was the nephew of eminent scientist Luigi Galvani, who lived in MIDIevil Bologna just like the author of this new classic..

Experimental music festivals in Austria – Part I: DONAUFESTIVAL , Krems 27.4.- 6.5.2018 https://bl.wiseup.de/experimental-festivals-donaufestival/?lang=en https://bl.wiseup.de/experimental-festivals-donaufestival/?lang=en#respond Mon, 16 Jul 2018 12:21:18 +0000 http://bl.wiseup.de/?p=3003 Read the full article...]]> In Austria there are plenty of festivals that showcase experimental and (post-)club music. Plus something else. In the following series I will discuss three of them. They happen in springtime: donaufestival, hyperreality and the heart of noise festival.

This will happen at different platforms. Part I is published on the blog of the shituationist institute:

https://si-blog.net/

https://si-blog.net/2018/07/16/experimental-music-festivals-in-austria-part-i-donaufestival/

Here is a teaser:

If you like cutting edge electronic and experimental music mixed with art or performance Austria is the place you should visit for festivals that offer an intense program of trans-artforms and in-betweens. The Viennese Pop connoisseurs who prefer some experimental, electronic and non-electronic avant-garde sounds come in numbers on two weekends at the end of April and beginning of May to the donaufestival in Krems, Austria. It is about an hour train or car ride from Vienna. They say with the donaufestival the summer starts in Vienna. And the weather was warm and sunny. Last year temperatures at night were around zero, but this year camping was no problem. Usually you need to camp, because Krems is small and there is at the same time an annual biker meeting going on and some other spring events so hotels need to be booked in advance. If you prefer to decide on the spur of the moment to attend the festival you will need to camp or take one of buses the festival provides back to Vienna.

You might wonder what the donaufestival is anyways, as it is not too established outside of Austria. It is a festival for music and performance art and tends to showcase avant-garde rock, noise and electronica artists. It exits since the late 1980s but took a new direction in 2005 with curator Tomas Zierhofer-Kin, who reinvented the festival into what it is known for today. It is well funded by the region and people expect quality. Zierhofer-Kin was followed by Thomas Edlinger two editions ago, who is well known in Austria because of his progressive radio show Im Sumpf which he is doing since almost two decades. We will hear more about Zierhofer-Kin again later, since he took over the Wiener Festwochen in 2017. Edlinger hasn’t changed much of the well running concept Zierhofer-Kin established. Which is a program comprised of performances, some media art and concerts in different venues around town. One innovation is the format Stockholm Syndrome, where it is not known in advance what will happen, if it will be music, performance or both. I couldn’t find out too much about it because you have to reserve the tickets in the morning online or by phone, after 30min the tickets are out, since Stockholm Syndrome happens in small venues and I am usually still sleeping then and I only made it to one edition, which was a concert last year. This should be organized differently so more people get the chance to see those events.
