ED’S PICK: March ‘18

birminghamreview — Sun, 04 Mar 2018 07:05:45 +0000

Words by Ed King **Due to the severe weather conditions, some March editorial may be delayed. It has nothing to do with 1) hangovers, 2) gigs on a Sunday that cause hangovers, 3) each episode of The Deuce being 1hr long. It’s the snow… it’s all about the snow** The BIG NEWS this month is that Rews …

ED’S PICK: Festivals… July – Sept ‘16

birminghamreview — Tue, 05 Jul 2016 18:37:28 +0000

Words by Ed King & Ceri Black / Lead pic of The Flyover Show – by Rob Gilbert “…I was thinking, Michael. If you got some speakers and a little wooden stage, we could really make this a party. And if it goes well we could always do it again next year. Maybe even charge.” With …

RELEASE: “Heroes” (David Bowie) by SHATTER EFFECT

birminghamreview — Mon, 18 Jan 2016 18:46:15 +0000

Words by Ed King Following the announcement of David Bowie’s death (on Monday 11th January for those of you living in a shoe box) the UK… nay world, has been gripped in a seemingly unstoppable explosion of nostalgia and celebration. Major radio stations have pulled out every piece of interview they can, the national tour operators are hastily pitching …

ED’S PICK: Moseley Folk Festival ’15 @ Moseley Park 04-6.09.15

birminghamreview — Wed, 02 Sep 2015 08:34:56 +0000

Words by Ed King / Pics courtesy of Moseley Folk Festival As the Great British Summer splutters another late April shower or two, and secondary school looms for Sebastian and Miranda, the B13 Birkenstocks and picnic blankets dust themselves off for another Moseley Folk Festival (middle class + weather x outdoor music event = funny). …

OPINION: A thorn by any other name…

birminghamreview — Mon, 29 Sep 2014 13:43:43 +0000

Words by Ed King I move around a lot, for work. The polite term is peripatetic. And for the first time since 2008 I find myself in Birmingham during the Conservative Party conference, with all the fervor and false promise such a political bandwagon contains – whatever its colour scheme. But this isn’t a party …

Ed’s… Highlights, Nov ‘12

birminghamreview — Thu, 01 Nov 2012 19:17:09 +0000

Ahhh November, the dwindling year’s last chance salon for self centred retail. From Hindu to Methodist, no one here gets out alive – fiscally speaking; from now until the end of the year, your God wants you to spend, spend, spend. But the sugar coating comes in musical form this winter, with a bevy of …

Ed’s… Highlights, Oct ’12

birminghamreview — Tue, 02 Oct 2012 13:06:23 +0000

Blah, blah, blah, October. Loose segue, leaves falling. Harvest reference. Bountiful, thankful, yada yada yada; a cornucopia of concerts. Starting with you-can-take-the-girl-out-of-Wolves, Carina Round (H&H, 3rd); touring her new album ‘Tigermending’. Then the slightly sharper tongued Azealia Banks (HMV Institute, 5th) raps one end of the rainbow, whilst Vatican wet dream – The Vienna …

Ed’s… Highlights, Sept ’12

birminghamreview — Sun, 02 Sep 2012 11:30:17 +0000

September comes but once a year; bringing Indian summers, a new school term and offensively early rhetoric about ‘…shopping days left’. But it’s also the start of another seasonal tour circuit, where labels and lucky independents try and get you to spend, spend, spend – encouraging the smashing of piggy banks as the C Word …

Ed’s… (end of festivals) Highlights, Aug ’12

birminghamreview — Wed, 01 Aug 2012 18:52:41 +0000

August, the most musically moribund month of the year. The last ‘summer’ month of festival bills, every artist worth a cover charge is holed up in a camper van green room or VIP marquee (a beer tent with chairs, to the lay person). Seriously, check the listings. Who? Huh? Why? I thought they were dead..? …

Ed’s… Highlights, July ‘12

birminghamreview — Tue, 03 Jul 2012 09:56:43 +0000

The next few months are festival fever, i.e. spending HUGE sums of cash. So to save money, words and comedic tautology (there’s only so many jokes you can make about Group 4 and mud), I’ll be giving you a shortened gigs highlight, followed by some cherry picked festies. On stage; July pickings in the city …
