On Thursday, September 10, the San Francisco Symphony hosted an evening of live music accompaniment of the 1983 movie Star Wars: Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi. Part of the organization’s Film With Live Orchestra series, this is the second of such concerts in the movie’s franchise since the first one in May, 2024, for Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. A second concert of the same program would take place two days later on September 12.
To many Star Wars fans, The Return Of The Jedi is the least favored entry within the three Trilogies partially for the awkwardness in changing the fundamental relationship between the protagonist Luke Skywalker and heroin Princess Leia, on top of the manner in which the family tie is revealed. There is also the alteration of the original script in making the three-foot, cuddly Ewoks serve as the fierce ally of the Rebellion in lieu of the seven-foot Wookies. All this are completely defensible.
For instance, the movie’s title indicates that the hero is to be triumphant over Vader and his Emperor. To make Skywalker confront his father, the dreaded Darth Vader, the filmmakers had to come up with a reason that would incite our hero to do the unthinkable. Making Leia his newly discovered twin sister and having their father planning to turn her to the dark side serves as the legitimate motive for Luke to fight Vader; and he fought his father not because he hated his deeds and politics, but the dark fate their father intended for his sister. This script also solves the potentially troublesome love triangle between Luke, Han Solo, and the Princess. As for the Ewoks, the Lucasfilm special effects powerhouse Industrial Light & Magic had not yet developed the technologies to put armies of Wookies in a forest war circa 1983. It was much easier to dress up dwarf actors to fight physically. And arguably the special effects of the entire film that continue to impress to this day is the Force Lightning that Emperor Palpatine shot out, especially the bolts that hit Vader’s helmet. These are some of the most un-animation-looking animation. Also curiously, though, even the latter, 1999 re-imaged edition did not properly age Anakin Skywalker to the age of death as he emerged from the netherworld and joined Yoda and Obiwan Kenobi in the post-war celebration. Lucasfilm may yet correct that in another edition.
Despite all that, ROTJ is the concluding chapter in the SW Saga, and composer John Williams was at the heights-of-power age of 51 when he composed 117 minutes’ worth of musical accompaniment for the 135-minute film, versus 103 minutes in TESB of 1980, and 94 minutes in the 1977 Star Wars. George Lucas hired Williams per recommendation of Steven Spielberg on the success of his 1976 Jaws, the first summer blockbuster in cinema history, and the composer’s Shostakovich-ish grandeur sans the politically tramatized tinge allowed the music to take center stage, often played to equal measure in volume and energy of the actions on screen. The 1980 Irvin Kershner-directed The Empire Strikes Back managed to retain a good degree of the Lucas vision in music centricity, but Richard Marquand’s ROTJ was more traditional in his methods and often moderated the music into backgrounds in favor of more prominent special effects sounds. In a way, that makes this concert experience the more unforgettable.
And what a beautiful sound it was. To account for the viewability of images projected onto the vast silver screen, lighting over the orchestra was dimmed, leaving the musicians with the reading lamps atop the score stands, and much of the audience’s attention was drawn onto the movie. But as a lifelong SW/Williams fan and an audiophile, I listened to differing editions of the franchise’s soundtracks on their own and in high volume throughout the years and what a treat it was in that evening to be able to immerse myself into the full glory of the Williams composition.
For instance, Williams made repeating use of all legacy SW themes for the movie from the previous two Episodes, such as the Force Theme, “Princess Leia’s Theme”, “Han Solo and The Princess”, “Yoda’s Theme”, and of course, the “Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)”. The new themes of note created for ROJ are “Luke and Leia”, “Parade of the Ewoks”, and of course, “The Emperor’s Theme”! This is the movie where the Sith Emperor took center stage, and his theme is heard throughout the film. In fact, the forebodingness of the theme deepens as we delve deeper into the movie, climaxing in the aforementioned Force Lightning sequence. The full brasses’ consonances from the SFS have always been memorable in classical concerts, and it was here that we get to hear it live and unimpeded for once.
A fully amalgamated suite of themes from Episode IV – A New Hope satiated from the very start as Skywalker and crew’s rescue of Han from the mighty Sarlacc was underway. Again, we don’t get it hear it as clearly in cinemas per the movie director’s vision, but what a performance that was. Even the musicians onstage had to be impressed. And the music kicked into high gear moments after the halfway intermission as the Rebel Fleet was about to come out of lightspeed just as Han planted the explosives inside the shield generator bunker. A disaster for the Rebel Alliance was about to unfold as they fell into the Emperor’s trap, thus ensued “Into The Trap”, one of Williams’ most exhilaratingly urgent and cautionary compositions. In the 1983 original CD release, the piece was a standalone four-minute work, but the 2004 DSD-remastered two-disc compilation with the track titled, “The Battle of Endor I” positioned the composition at the beginning, then leading with no pause right into the next motif, all in the same track. In addition, three additional tracks, namely, “The Lightsaber/The Ewok Battle”, “The Battle of Endor II”, and “The Battle of Endor III” were arranged to follow seamlessly. We got to hear all four tracks live that evening! Never mind the projection overhead, the music was of such ferocity and energy as to qualify as a true classical concert experience and then some.
Williams would go on to compose such swashbuckling music for films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman, E.T. the Extra-terrestrial, Jurassic Park and most importantly all three films of the Prequel Trilogy. Wagner would be envious.
If you had to ask, of course I wished for more. For instance, “Lapti Nek”, the original canteen music performed inside the court of Jabba the Hutt was replaced by “Jedi Rock’ in the latter edition so as to create a sequence that emphasized the presence of the character Bobba Fett. But Williams composed “Lapti Nek” in 1983 and it was the disco era, and it was performed considerably faster on film than the one on soundtrack release, and truly more festive. But the sequence was not performed by the SFS and we were relegated to hearing the original film from speakers instead. I had hoped a singer would come on stage to perform one of them live; wouldn’t that be a real blast!
The conductor Anthony Parnther lent interesting, new perspectives on some of the music by emphasizing the tympani and cymbal in some passages, and fleshed out the horn in others. There were also a few instances where he was two seconds too slow after a scene, although he may only be partially responsible as he was led by a prompting screen. After the intermission, to enthusiastic applause, he conducted the Symphony to play a short but sweeping excerpt from TESB before the evening resumed. And he lifted his head not once to look at the movie the whole time. Talk about discipline and professionalism.
All said, anytime a live orchestra performs the 20th Century Fox fanfare that leads into the Star Wars Main Theme is an occasion not to be missed.

Introduction
I attended the Rocky Mountain Auudiofest every year for many years. It was for me an opportunity to renew acquaintances, preview new products and meet manufacturers. My first exposure to the “Meitner Mafia” (Amadeus, Susan and Ed) was at RMAF. If I remember correctly, EMM was showcasing their digital front end and their brand new MTRX amps. Ed and Susan were sequestered in an adjoining room, which is to say it was not obvious that they were attending. My friend Jim and I were much taken with the amps and the sound of the system. At some point, we were asked if we would like to meet the designer. That began a long relationship with Ed and eventually Amadeus. Several things were immediately clear, that Amadeus was protective of his father, that Ed was brutally honest and that he did not suffer fools lightly. Fortunately, he made an exception in my case.
If there is one thing that is predictable with Ed Meitner, it is that he is never satisfied with any of his designs. I am quite sure that this occasionally drives his son crazy. Often what he learns in working on one product can be applied to other products. In practice, this means that products are in a continuous state of flux. When enough changes accumulate or there is a breakthrough, a new model is introduced. This has been particularly true over the last two years which have been a particularly productive period culminating in the introduction of new products designated by an “i” at the end of their name; hence the PREi preamp.

Listening

Maurice Ravel, Complete Works for Solo Piano. Bertrand Chamayou, Erato, digital
‘Oiseaux tristes’ from Ravel’s “Miroirs” for piano was playing when I walked into the room. I had left the volume at a moderate level when I left the room earlier. Bertrand Chamayou was the pianist, on Erato, a very recent recording (also issued on LP).
I was immediately taken by the soft, gentle waves of the piano, and stopped, and shortly sat down. What startled me was that the source was not being played through my Audio Note M10 Signature pre-amp, with all its trusty and most musical vacuum tubes – my (apparent) guarantee of musicality. No, instead, this was being played via the EMM solid state preamp and monoblock combination.
The piano sound was gentle, as it should be, but is not necessarily the case with most solid-state electronics. The attacks felt real, the detail extraordinary. While the Audio Note cannot be beat for mid-range warmth, the PREi captured some edges of color and tonality that seemed beyond the Audio Note, particularly in the deep bass, and with the softest notes, enough to cause me to stop and listen. Which it continued to do for another 20 minutes before finally tearing myself away to deal with whatever quotidian task had brought me into the music room.

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Acoustic Sounds (corrected speed), 180 grams
Later the same day in the first real evaluative listening session, we decided to play the relatively new Acoustic Sounds reissue of Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue with side 1 reproduced at the correct speed. Since – presumably – the change in speed would have caused certain changes in the sound, small though they may have been, we approached this as an opportunity to rediscover the tunes on this side.
With the EMM, the soundstage was very clear. Mostly, the instruments were placed on each side, as was common with early stereo, but in ‘So What’, Miles’ horn came out from the right toward the center, with a remarkably three-dimensional effect. The result was spellbinding, as that solo can be. ‘Freddy Freeloader’ sounded as if it had been recorded with a different mic set up. It was still left-right, but the horns seemed more up front, with more space around them, and with a bit more warmth. The detail, again, was superb, but in the service of the music. Miles’ occasional hesitancies in his attacks, his sudden volume changes, and his other somewhat unusual expressive devices, were as – or more – clean and clear than I’ve ever heard.

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Acoustic Sounds UHQR
As a control we decided to listen to the same cuts on the Acoustic Sounds UHQR which is recorded at 45 rpm. There was more detail, the soundstage was more forward and full sounding. Miles’ trumpet was more full sounding, much more authentic and musical. The same was true of Coltrane and Bill Evans’s piano. In fact, after this, I would say that the corrected version is a real disappointment.

Q: Please tell the readership your background, how you came about the name Ancient Audio, and one or two of the most pivotal moments in the history of Ancient Audio.
A: I was returning home from high school one day and I stopped by a second hand /pawn/ luxury goods shop. Poland was a communist country back then. Wrangler jeans costh $12, LP $9, CD $12. Monthly salary was 10-12 $. These visits were pure platonic, just window shopping, the merchandises were out of range of the average Pole. Goods from another planet. But that day was special. I had seen a Transcriptor Hydraulic Reference turntable. I was shot. I was watching it like the Garfield cat was watching a full, open refrigerator. Or like truck driver, watching Dolly Parton in bath. I had seen an unity of fine arts, utility arts and audio device. It was Hi-End. By the way, this turntable was famous, presented in the movie Clock Work Orange . The only way to touch this desired player was to make replica by myself. The sound of the replica was horrible, but the look was quite nice.
So, my music and electronics passion was given wind on sails.
After graduation, I became a tutor at the University. I had the luck of working in two of the best teams. In 1987, we made the first fibre optics Ethernet network in the communist block. In 1993, we made digital fibre optics link for broadcast TV, the third company to do so worldwide. (Poland became a democracy around 1990. -Pub.) The speed of this link was 300 Mbit/s. A CD data stream is just 1.4 Mbit/s. So, you can imagine how advanced a system it already was. It accorded me excellent understanding about digital audio and high speed optical data transmission.
I grew up in a science/art family. My father was professor of computer methods in mechanics, mother was historian of art. She was the director of Orient Art on Royal Wawel Castle museum. I frequently visited her at the castle. It was a natural education of art. Once, in secret I went into the chamber to sit on the polish king’s throne. Just 10 seconds, I felt like King of Poland. Of course, it was absolutely forbidden.
All the art and history has made me appreciate roots of western civilization, and I was fascinated about Ancient Greece to this day. So, on one hand I was involved in the most advanced technologies, on the other a deep appreciation of the old school heritage. Working at university enabled me to develop my audio passion with advanced electronics knowledge. Like many audiophiles of ’90, I then became fascinated by vacuum tubes. I made hybrid, tube-transistor amplifier, as my first serial product. Both technology and look were of the old school type and gave rise to the name of company: Ancient Audio .
Having a solid digital and optics electronics foundation, I focused on CD and players. I had only one problem…how to match this contemporary technology with old school look? The classic vinyl or even shellac turntable was the missing link. So, my CD players has open CD architecture during play. It reminds one of a classic turntable.
The first Lektor CD player had glass doors, to cover the CD. Lektor II, made on stable, granite base, was introduced in 2002, with totally open CD compartment. It was a similar solution to famous 47 Labs players from Japan.
In 2005, I introduced the Lektor Grand, the world’s first 3-piece CD player comprising a transport and two mono DAC’s. With vacuum tube output, it was called analog-sounding, and was named one of four best players on the market. Together with the Silver Grand Mono amplifiers, also called the best sounding amp to this day, these devices established the company’s reputation.
Q: Most other manufacturers utilize only one ESS chip for both channels. What prompted you to use two chips, what are the difficulties involved in using two?
A: The ES9038Pro has 8 D/A converters inside, which can be set in many modes. For example, it can operate in 7.1 multi-channel , where each D/A converter is feeding one channel.
In stereo mode, there are two groups, by 4 D/A converters, connected parallelly. Most manufactures uses it, and I also use this mode in my more affordable players like the Lektor Fun, Lektor Step, Lektor 30 Anniversary. Connecting two converters in parallel decreases the noise level by 3 dB. Connecting four, 6 dB.
Lektor Joy is the flagship player. I use two chips in it, each in mono mode, where all 8 D/A converters are connected parallelly. That decreases the noise floor by a whopping 9 dB. Additionally, the power supply and ground are complete separated for the left and right channels. This arrangement gives improving sound quality of player. By the way, same solution as well as the same CD-Pro8 drive are in the Gryphon Ethos, direct competitor of Lektor Joy, however two times more expensive.
The dual chips has its own issues. First, there are the most expensive chips on market. Also, it needs another control software. It was easy for me, because all software for Lektor Joy was custom created to control the CD drive, display and D/A chips. It was also necessary to facilitate Joy’s unique clock system. Usually, CD players has many separate clocks for the CD drive, display, keyboard, D/A. In the Joy, only one clock exists. It is a precision unit made by Tent Labs of Holland to control mechanism, display, keyboard, remote. So, it doesn’t produce interference between clocks, and hence less jitter. Both hardware and software of the Lektor Joy were created differently than most Hi-End players.
Q: Could you share with the readership the noise figures of the Lektor Joy, as well as that of the Lektor 30th Anniversary? In addition, what are the reasons for not adopting an SACD drive?
What are the reasons for deactivating the DSD decoding on the ES9038PRO?
A: The noise figure for the Lektor Joy is less than -100 dBA, below the measuring equipment’s resolution.
Measures of CD players are completely unrelated to sound. I spent 6 years during my job at Institute of Electronics to find any serious relation, by many complex measures. Traditional measured errors are much below human hearing resolution, for example frequency response 20 Hz-20 kHz +/- 0. 2 dB, or THD 0.002 %. But audible differences are really big. After 6 years, I found a special test signal, and wavelet transformation signal processing, showing that differences of 5-6 dB between players are very big, but there is no correlation between sound and measurements. These research became my PhD thesis.
I adopted the CD-Pro 8 drive because it is the best available on market, solid in mechanical properties and excellent sounding. And with stable delivery, stable quality, stable service. So, I focused on the best possible CD retrieval. Also, the most interesting music is available on CD only to this day.
Furthermore, most of my players can be equipped with Digital Speaker Processor. And, any post-recording editing and processing, even just volume change, cannot be done on DSD signal but PCM. All contemporary records are recorded on PCM, then after editing, mixing etc. they are converted to DSD.
Q: Before I move onto non-digital aspects of the LJ, can I ask you about your thoughts on companies still insisting on using the Philips TDA1541 chip?
A: The absolute sound is the peak, which engineers try to achieve by different methods. Which is the best ? Of course, we can see and listen, who is the closest to the peak, who is closer to the sound of vinyl record, perfectly imitating live music.
So, there are amplifiers basing on 1940s vacuum tubes and amplifiers using 2025 solid state technologies. There are 1960 Ampex tape recorders, and the 2024 Lektor Joy CD player. There are 1954 Tannoy Westminster Royal, and 2024 Magico. What is the best ?
One of my customers uses custom speakers made of vintage Altec drivers and metal horns. These parts were made maybe in the 50’s. Sound was amazing, with dynamics, space, air, colors.
The same is with the TDA 1541. Some creators use it without digital oversampling filter, but with analog low pass filter. Demands for this filter are extremally high, which has very sharp rolloff, and have aperiodic response. The analog filter, extremely difficult to design and tune, but when accomplished in both channels is key to good sound of TDA 1541, as long as it is in pure, not oversampling, mode. Its sound can be very well if made by master, or awful if made by beginner.
Most designers and chip suppliers, like me, prefer the other route, such as complex chips with very sophisticated digital processing for the relative ease in serial duplication. For example, the ES9038PRO has 8 digital filters, 32 bit resolution, and probably even more accurate processing than others. So, it can minimize side effects of early oversampling filters.
However…there are many players using the ES9038PRO chip. Some are lazy, some are too nervous. Why ? It will be the next chapter…
These same cases applied towards the 300B amplifiers. They are simple as umbrella, as all tube amplifiers. The difference is in details, like speaker transformer, capacitors, wiring. But the real key to good sound of tube amplifier is the power supply, particularly in the Single-Ended Triode mode. SET amplifier receives current in one phase of signal, and sending current in the next. The best tube amplifiers play without feedback, both global and local. Suh is the case with the Silver Grand Mono. So, power supply must be perfect. Finally, power supply of Silver Grand Mono is key of its sound. Its power supply uses 20 times more components than most solid-state amplifiers.
Q: Could you provide some technical details on the linestage?
A: The output stage, or analog stage is an underestimated part of CD player. Most people are focusing on DAC, not as mindful about complete chain of signal path.
Ancient Audio produces very high quality amplifications. So, it was a natural advantage to empower CD player with variable output to drive the power amplifier directly. In that case, output stage was de facto preamplifier, with ability do deliver lot of signal to drive cables and low sensitivity devices.
Fashions exist in technology, not only in hairdo, clothes, or handbags but also CD players. Some time ago , upsamplers were in fashion, as well as vacuum tube output stage. It was an attempt to make sound of first CD players softer, more “analog like”.
As a beginner designer, I tried to put vacuum tube into CD players’ signal path in the typical application, meaning a cathode follower. Results were disappointing with lot of complications, achieving only minor sound improvement. Yes, the sound was softer, but in the wrong way because dynamics was limited. After many trials, it was clear, that 100% negative local voltage feedback device can produce more side effects than positive ones. So, I applied local current feedback. Older generation of engineers knows it very well, because it was a solution used in oscilloscopes. Oscilloscope amplifier must give gain, without any side effects, to show signal as is original. I applied this solution for then Lektor II CD player.
The result was surprising! On one hand, the sound was unchanged at high frequencies, but impact, and instrument positioning were much better. Appropriate application of vacuum tube gave effects opposite to just “soft”. It led to the birth of Lektor III, and all the generations of Ancient Audio CD players. Initially, the 6DJ8/ECC88 double triode tubes were adopted, then the Russian 6H30. This tube, created as driver for military radios, had low output impedance, and high current capabilities. It became the signature of all Lektors. This tube has no equivalent in western production.
In the design of the Lektor Joy, the current flagship player, I continued using this well-established tube. But, in that time Russia invaded Ukraine. It was an earthquake-like shock to almost all aspects of life in Europe. It became clear that a new solution was needed. The main circuit reminded same but the vacuum tube was replaced by MOSFet, semiconductor with similar, voltage drive. It was already used in the Ancient Audio Silver Phono preamplifier, so it was no problem to put it into the flagship CD player.
In comparison, we had a prototype using double circuits: the 6H30 vacuum tube, and the new Mosfet. They could be immediately switched during play. I asked my friends with golden ears to vote on the solution they like, and they couldn’t tell which is which. They pointed to subtle advantages, such as more shadows in high frequencies. It was surprise, because they preferred the MOSFet solution.
For the final output stage, it can deliver up to 15 Vpp on RCA outputs, or 30 Vpp on XLR, what means the ability to drive every power amplifier. Additionally, the output stage has variable gain, set by a rear-panel switch of the CD player for an additional 10 dB gain. This can be very helpful especially when the Digital Speaker Processor is installed, because the processor has 10 dB gain loss.
So, the output stage of Lektor Joy is rather more similar to tubes than solid state, even it is silicon-based. Output capacitors are now necessary. As in previous Lektors, I use excellent ODAM capacitors, made in USA by Chris Venhaus. These are oil impregnated capacitors. In the past, oil was used to improve insulation and heat exchange in power capacitors and transformers. But in Lektor Joy, oil is kind of a delicate filter, removing high frequency noise after high speed D/A conversion.
As I wrote before, vacuum tube circuits are very simple but needs perfect power supply. Lektor Joy has independent symmetric power circuit, to supply the output stage. In that case, it was necessary to attain not only perfect stability, but also extremally low noise, even lower than the typical solid state or opamps units. Classic solutions, such as the uA 7815 / 7915 had one hundred times higher noise than required, and complex pulse response. So, another proprietary solution, adapted from the Silver Grand Mono amplifier, was applied. As a result, this completely linear power supply, with separate toroidal transformers for CD transport, and audio section, plus high gain and class A single-ended MOSFet output stage, consumes the most power of the entire CD player. The result is excellent sound.

The advent of broadband internet gave rise to server-based online music streaming, and yet its popularity is unsustainable as the Boomer audiophile base see the infinite subscription not returning newer, better Seventies and Eighties music to which they’ve been listening. Consider the hoard of discs many of us accumulated throughout the decades, and the ones discarded by many other of us are now available en masse on eBay and the likes. CDs, when kept in their jewel cases and away from heat sources, will truly stay playable like the first day. Now, no need to despair if you have chucked all your collection for streaming, because CD-Rs are easily created and in many cases they sound better than the commercial ones because they exhibit superior adherence to the disc centering protocol demonstrably.
This review looks at an offering from Ancient Audio of Poland, namely the Lektor Joy CD player. The digital speaker processor circuit is not activated for this review.
Ancient Audio has six products, the flagship being the $76,000 Silver Grand Mono II parallel single-ended triode monoblocks. The rest of the product line are all digital players, from the $26,400 Lektor Joy, the subject of this review, to the $17,200 Lektor Fun CD player/DAC/preamplifier, the $13,200 Lektor Step CD player/DAC/preamplifier/processor, the similarly priced Lektor Transport CD transport, and finally the $9,200 Lektor 30 Anniversary CD player/Preamplifier/Processor. The Lektor Joy and the Lektor Transport are the two models among the six digital players constructed of a single solid block of aluminum; the others are given glass and aluminum enclosures. The optional feature of digital speaker processing is not installed on the review unit.
Flaunting a relatively compact physique, the Lektor Joy is nonetheless heavy, being constructed of one aluminum block, ladened with multiple transformers, banks of premium capacitors and a considerable slab of transport mechanism. For the LJ utilizes the conventional reading arrangement of loading the CD onto the spindle and stabilized lightly with a magnetic cap. The reading mechanism is dubbed StreamUnlimited CD-pro8, designed by Austrian company SUOS-HiFi GmbH, a company founded by ex-Philips engineers in 2006 as Stream Unlimited Optical Storage before the rebranding in 2024. It is further tuned by Anicent Audio for the Lektor Joy. The same standard transport mechanism is also featured most notably in the Gryphon Ethos, Accustic Arts Drive II, among others. The StreamUnlimted CD-pro8 is considered the successor to the Philips CD Pro 2, a widely revered design discontinued in 2012.
The Lektor Joy sports two ESS Technology ES9038PRO Sabre 32-bit HyperStream II chips, one for each channel, and decodes signal up to 32-bit 216kHz via the USB 2.0 input, far exceeding DSD resolution, which itself is already surpassed by audio files at 24-bit 192kHz. Yet, the Ancient Audio does not decode DSD files, nor 24-bit files at 176kHz, producing white-noise sourcing from Aurender N200 cache player on both occasions instead of auto-muting. It is therefore prudent to lower the volume first so that blasting white noise won’t result should you try to play files of sampling frequencies outside of the player’s specifications. Company owner Jarek Waszczyszyn believes this white-noise generation is the result of specific incompatibility between the Aurender and the Lector Joy. Additionally, the company recommends downloading the Amanero drivers software for playing via computers.

“I made some tests with Joy, and DSD data, it took me some time.
Joy uses chip Crystal Semiconductor CS 8422, for all incoming digital signals. This chip decodes PCM signals only. In case of any signal imperfections, it automatically mutes signal to prevent noise. I tested it many times, with different devices. This muting works fine.
So, only source of problem can be USB module, connected via S/P DIF . I use excellent, classic solution from Italy, Amanero Combo384SE. So, based on documentation, it should be no noise , playing DSD by Joy’s USB input. I checked it at my friend’s computer, he likes both PCM and DSD files. We connected Joy by USB. All was working fine, means it was excellent music on PCM, and silence on DSD.

]]>What constitutes qualification as a music lover differs among its purveyors. Ask a random person and he’ll likely posit the ability to play an instrument as paramount. Ask any member of an orchestra from the conductor to individual players and he/she will include every member of the audience. More than painting and writing, the ability to play an instrument depends on one’s giftedness. One can practice the art of painting and writing and attain some heights but music playing is an ability that will only get better and be enjoyable if one is born with such a gift. Barring that, intense will and commitment towards practicing is paramount. Even some composers can be categorized as sound experimenter or music expert and to differing degrees, music lover.
But can an audiophile be a music lover, or are these two classifications mutually exclusive of each other? I often come across comments that seek to exclude an audiophile from the rank of music lovers. The proponents contend that audiophiles listen to their equipment and not music, thus they cannot be music lovers. I can see the underlying intent of prioritizing music listening, but music listening at its most fundamental level is a way to spend time, whatever concomitant benefits there may be.
The audiophile hobby can consume vastly more money and time than a whole slew of others. There are those with means, who just throw money at the hobby and desire to be entertained; but just as in anything worth doing, it becomes hollow indulgences when wealth approaches a point where money is no longer a concern to the individual. To the audiophile population as a whole, which is considerable, the hobby engages many facets of modern day living, namely the financial planning aspect, the allure of technological advancement and the promotion of it by the industry at large, the buying and selling of said sough-after machines, the joy of inviting likeminded audiophiles to experience one’s system, etc. The hobby actually cultivates the love of music in many; the joy of discovering one’s own meticulously ensembled sound system being worthy of the most beautiful of music is real. There is no other hobby like it.
The question, then, is if it is more meaningful to spend thousands of dollars on equipment and music content and then listen to the music thus-produced for hours on ends, or would one rather prefer spending the same time and resources on whatever else.
In this sense, what makes the audiophile a music lover is his passion for reproducing the most realistic sound of instruments in his own home, and the satisfaction of experiencing music performed by renowned ensembles of the world, produced by fine instruments and recorded in the most meticulous and professional manner. Anyone can be a music lover on the cheap, be my guest if you want to be the one, true music lover requiring only music in your head. Concert season tickets are nowhere near the cost of building a sound system, but to be an audiophile music lover? It takes a lot.

Abbey Road (1969)
Introduction (Earl Weed)
“I remember the first time I heard the Beatles Abbey Road. I would have been 15 years old in 1969, when it came out. One of my friends played in a band with a guy who had a reel-to-reel tape machine in his bedroom, and that fellow also had a reel-to-reel copy of Abbey Road. Of course, in 1969, reel-to-reels were quite magical – the ne plus ultra of audio resolution. So, several of us gathered in his bedroom after band practice to listen. And the recording seemed to us quite remarkable…or was it the reel-to-reel? In any case, over the years after I first heard it, Abbey Road became a lodestar, a cap to living through the 60’s, musically, and more broadly. This was especially true of Side 2, with its incredibly inventive medley put together by Paul McCartney and George Martin.
I’ve been curious for some years now about how the different pressings of Abbey Road might compare, starting with pressings close to the original release date, which are legendary in some quarters, and thereafter, including the Mobile Fidelity pressing from the 70’s, which I bought when it first came out, up to the later EMI pressings out of the “Blue Box”, and then against the, relatively, recent masters done by Giles Martin out of the digital era. I figured out recently that earlier pressings were not nearly as expensive as they once were. So, I bought a couple of them to check out against other pressings that Fred and I could come up with collectively.”

With the explanation above, my friend Earl proposed that we do a shoot-out of various of the Abbey Road pressings and jointly construct a review. If we’d arrived at dramatically different conclusions, I wouldn’t have agreed. But arriving at a consensus was not difficult, so here we are. What we listened to and compared were: a UK Apple pressing from around 1969-1970; an Apple pressing from 1975, which was identified by a blogger on Steve Hoffman’s site as having come after a remastering of some sort; an EMI/Apple pressing from the “Blue Box” – a box of the complete Beatles LPs from the mid-80’s; the Mobile Fidelity pressing mentioned above, which Earl bought in the late 70’s; and, finally, the Giles Martin remastering, which Earl acquired for the purposes of this shoot out, and which appeared in 2019.

Abbey Road – A bit of background:
First, a few pertinent comments about Abbey Road. Abbey Road was the second-to-last of The Beatles’ releases. However, it was the last recorded – the tracks for what became ‘Let It Be’ were actually recorded earlier – and in a different studio altogether – but were released later in order to coincide with the release of the documentary ‘Let It Be’, which hadn’t been edited by the time Abbey Road was ready for release.
Wikipedia is an excellent source of information about Abbey Road, as is the book which comes with the Abbey Road Anniversary Edition from 2019. (That reissue contains CDs of the 2019 remix, along with outtakes, and a DVD version of the remix.)
For starters, it is useful to know that Abbey Road was recorded on a new 8 track tape machine and mixer at Abbey Road studios as opposed to 4 track machines previously used. It was also the first solid state mixing desk the group had used. Reportedly, the mixing desk was markedly superior to previous desks used and allowed for greater mixing capabilities than before. The Beatles had certainly pushed the envelope in terms of recording technologies during past albums. In the case of Abbey Road, the technology seemed to have caught up with their needs. Indeed, following our listening sessions with Abbey Road, we did some listening to Sgt. Pepper’s, Magical Mystery Tour, and Revolver, all of which at times seemed to suffer from the technological stretches brought about by the band’s imaginative needs – particularly in the area of overdubbing. Which is hardly surprising, given that they were stretching the limits of 4 track technology when piling on multiple tracks, as they were increasingly inclined to do.
In our listening sessions, we focused primarily on Side 2 of Abbey Road. This side begins with one of George Harrison’s very strong contributions, ‘Here Comes the Sun’, which was followed by ‘Because’, a John Lennon contribution that features nine layers of vocal tracks, and a substantial role for synthesizer, largely new to the band’s palette. The remainder of the side is given over to a medley of songs, or snippets of songs, largely stitched together by Paul McCartney and producer George Martin. The story of the making of Abbey Road is much more complex, of course, and is well-told, particularly in the book that comes with the Anniversary Edition.)
Altogether, these songs, along with the medley, contain an extremely rich palette of instruments and lead and harmony vocals that, in variety and density, are both pleasing to the ear (even over a long listening session) and challenging to the audio equipment involved – at both ends of the spectrum: production, and reproduction. A partial listing: Multiple lead and harmony vocals; multiple acoustic and electric guitars along with their various amps and effects; drums with new tom heads (to Ringo’s great happiness); various keyboards, including electric harpsichord (George Martin) and organ (George Martin again); assorted other percussion, including groups of hand claps, tubular bells, tambourine and maracas; a string section, plus clarinets, flutes, alto flutes, piccolos, trumpets and trombones; and then not only tape loops of “found” sounds put together by Paul, but EMI Sound Effect Reels of crickets and “Jungle Noises.”
Before presenting our comments about the sounds of the different pressings, two things seem worth noting: First, Abbey Road is a terrific-sounding recording. While we developed distinct views about the “happiness level” provided by the various LPs, all had value – and Abbey Road is the sort of recording that is going to sound quite pleasing even on a car stereo or boombox.
Second, we both grew up with this record, and heard pressings of it – if not on particularly good equipment – as early as 1969 (possibly), when it was released. While we have trained ourselves to listen objectively, it goes without saying that there may be some historical preferences that play a role here.
With all that having been said, here are our comments about each of the pressings we listened to:
U.K. Apple Pressing (circa 1969-1970):
The sound of this early pressing is certainly quite excellent, in spite of a bit of surface noise that seems inevitable with a popular record of this age. There is a peculiar and particular quality to Ringo’s snare and cymbals that seems unique to his recorded sound at this time. It is very difficult to describe – Earl would call it a trebly ring, in the case of the snare and the high hat. The toms do not have a lot of ring to them, but they sound very solid and well-tuned; their newness, perhaps. The drums in general are very effectively mixed, not overly loud, yet fully present. We both liked the sound of the drumheads, and the cymbals. They are very coherent.
The vocal choirs are very clean, clear, and present. Forward enough that the individual voices are in many cases easy enough to attribute to individual members. John’s voice, in particular, is very identifiable, with a warm growl to it, whether in harmony or solo. From looking at pictures from the studio, it appears likely that they were using tube microphones, which can enhance the warmth in that way. Earl, having recorded with some tube-based Neumann’s, is fond of claiming that “they are so good, they make me sound like Frank Sinatra.” Which, with due respect, is surely absurd…
Stereo spread is beyond the speakers, yet with a full center fill. In that way, among others, the mix is terrific, making it easy for the speakers to disappear. Balance among the instruments is very well-judged. There are lots of instruments in the mix at various times, which means the listener will be unable to hear every detail of every instrument (of course) – the judgment used in balancing out the tracks was really terrific, especially in these relatively early days of multitracking. Of course, the quality of the mastering and pressing play their roles here as well. And the cricket effects that swirl around at the beginning of ‘Sun King’ are perfect.
U.K. Apple Pressing (circa 1975):
The sound of this pressing is fairly close to the earlier pressing, except in three respects: a little more detail than in the earlier pressing, particularly in the top end; somewhat greater presence in the bass guitar; and a somewhat more forward-seeming presentation overall. At times, in fact, the bass could be right at the edge of too much, such that it almost overcame some of the top end detail, although at other times it might have more effectively underlined the proceedings. The slight additional detail enhances certain instruments in particular, such as the synth in ‘Here Comes the Sun.’ At other times, different effects became more obvious, such as the multiple clapping hands in the same tune. The characteristic snare sound that we liked from the earlier copy is still there, happily.
Overall, as noted, the presentation is a bit more forward than the earlier pressing, which may be what gives the impression of more detail. The vocal choir in ‘Because’ is still breathtaking, but one might have to work a little harder to identify individual contributors. Nevertheless, the overall effect is very sexy.
It might be fair to say that the earlier pressing is more tubelike and the ‘75 pressing is a little more transistory/ hi-fi – though not much. And it might, in fact, be the case, given that record labels were, in these years, gradually transforming their gear from tubes to transistors, the latter being viewed, at the time, as more accurate, and better able to handle more complex material. The record was no doubt re-pressed multiples times in the years 1969 – 1975, and it stands to reason that the equipment involved changed. We have come across one report that the record was remastered before the ’75 pressing as well but have not confirmed it.
As between the two pressings, it would be hard to complain about either. The sound in the earlier pressing seems a bit meatier, overall, while the ’75 pressing has some pleasurable extra detail, but the difference is not night and day, by any means.
K. Blue Box Pressing (circa 1985):
In 1978, EMI/Parlophone issued a boxed set of all The Beatles’ albums, which became known amongst collectors as the “Blue Box.” It was re-pressed multiple times up into the mid-80’s. The Blue Box from which our test copy came appears to have been pressed in 1985.
The overall sound of the ’85 pressing is still very good. It is the most focused on detail of all the pressings surveyed, to an almost clinical degree. It also seems to have been mastered at a somewhat lower volume level. Once we adjusted for the difference in volume, the sound was somewhat more natural than it seemed at first; however, the overall thrust of the tunes could sometimes seem to get lost in the detail. For example, the vocal chorus in ‘Because’ was terrifically detailed and forward, but not quite as individually rich and sexy as the previous copies. Additionally, the sound of the drums was not quite as satisfyingly warm and rich as in the earlier pressings, not as faultlessly coherent. We could come up with additional examples, but overall, the ’85 pressing was somewhat less satisfying than the earlier pressings. However, whether or not the difference was noticeable would depend upon the equipment on which it was played.
Mobile Fidelity Re-issue (1980):
Ultimately, Mobile Fidelity reissued, essentially, versions of the entire Blue Box described above, in 1982. However, the first reissue was issued in 1980. Earl’s original 1980 copy is the copy we used for listening. One issue that is not clear is whether Mobile Fidelity used master’s from Capitol Records or from EMI/Parlophone.
Overall, this Mobile Fidelity version of Abbey Road is fairly much different from the EMI versions listened to so far, somewhat less forward and somewhat less immediate. In the chorus on ‘Because’, it is harder to differentiate the individual participants. The detail of the synths is there, and the overall feel is fairly warm. The chorus, and everything else really, seems a little further behind the speakers. We can imagine that when this came out, it might have seemed more detailed to some listeners on hi-fis of the day, with more delicacy, because of its overall reticence. However, now, this pressing seems less fun than any of the pressings previously discussed. It’s not that it is missing anything exactly. It just does not reach out and grab one by the ears and make one want jump and move, as Earl puts it, although I can hardly call my friend’s no doubt jerky movements as amounting to dancing, but you know what we mean. It is flatter-seeming, less involving than the prior pressings, although it can hardly be considered “bad.”
Abbey Road (Giles Martin remastering, 2019):
The newest remastering by George Martin’s son Giles was cut at a lower volume than some of the others but once the volume was adjusted, it had more bass. Detail was very good, in some places superior to prior pressings. In comparison to the Mobile Fidelity pressing, for example, the new version was much more immediate and had some of the excitement of the earliest pressings.
Some examples of the positives, along with a few negatives: The chorus in ‘Because’ is spread further across the stage than we typically encountered, which was sensually pleasing. However, the voices seemed somewhat less differentiated. For instance, it was harder to pick out Lennon’s unique voice, particularly as compared to the ’69-’70 or ’75 pressing. In other words, the chorus seemed more homogenized. As expected in this remaster, some balances have been tinkered with/adjusted. The guitar in ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’ seems somewhat buried into the right channel which, for someone raised on the original mix, seems a little odd. And later versions of the harmony voices are again somewhat homogenized. The drum sound that we liked on earlier pressings (mildly peculiar as it may have been) seems to have lost some of its character. Again, more generic, less Ringo – at least for us old-timers.
Finally, over time, we began to feel some listening fatigue with this copy that we sometimes associate with digital mastering, although it happens with pure analogue as well. Was this simply the fatigue that seems inevitable over a longer than normal listening session? Or an artifact of the process? Not sure.
Listened to in the car or on a lesser system, the new mastering would be fine. The same could also be true if you were unfamiliar with Abbey Road in general. However, if you know the record and have heard the earlier full analogue versions on systems with a good bit of resolving power, you might well be disappointed with this version.
Conclusion
First, it is very much worth saying that Abbey Road is such a strong piece of work that it held up quite well over multiple hours of listening. Most of us would not likely doubt that, although reviews at the time, as quoted in the Anniversary Edition, indicate that all was not well with the critics upon initial release. Of course, The Beatles developed with every album, especially from about 1965 on. If a critic was looking simply for more of the same, for the familiar, that critic was headed for disappointment.
Of course, if you’ve read this far, you are most likely a serious fan of the album. And, for those serious fans who have some patience and the right hi-fi gear, we believe that finding an early pressing of Abbey Road would be worth the trouble. Whether the pressing is ’69-’70 or in the ’75 range, the ears will be rewarded, for all the reasons discussed above. You will be hearing – relatively speaking – what the makers of the record were looking to present at the time “Abbey Road” was created.
At the same time, one would be well rewarded by tracking down a copy of the “Anniversary Edition” with the 3 CDs and Blu-ray mentioned above, plus the hardbound book, all of which is in a presentation slip-box. The book is an absorbing read. And this would give the serious “Abbey Road” addict the opportunity to compare the sound of the early pressing with the 2019 pressing, plus the additional work-in-progress tracks.
As to the issue of how to identify early pressings of Abbey Road, this is of a level of complexity that is well beyond the scope of this review. In short, from our perspective, a serious and reliable vinyl vendor would be the way to go.

And then there is the Charles-Francois Gounod (1818-1893) “Ave Maria”, in the same CD no less! Not to be taken lightly despite its French flair, it is decidedly more religious in the more yearningly intense passage, though in my mind continues to give ground to the Schubert musicality. But there is one contemporary composition of the subject of Ave Maria that reflects the kind of beauty as only a twentieth century composer could attain, the Ennio Morricone (1928-2020) composition for the 1986 film, The Mission.
The composition depicts the natives singing the music in a 1750 Paraguay, and Morricone fittingly arranged for a choir that fluctuates, simulating an amateurish Guarani village ensemble. The result was a music beautiful in its melody but jarring to the ear. The SACD edition of 2003 didn’t help.
This morning I woke up with the tune in my head, but in perfect choral unity and harmony. I searched and found Presto Classical features two recordings of the chorus:

The EuroArts track is in 24-bit 48kHz resolution, the Silva Screen Records one in standard Redbook, and both sound like good music to my ear. Gone was the uneven vocals, replaced by blended singing and harmonious tones. The EuroArts track is part of the March 14, 2025 release Hollywood Gala II, and the rendition is deserving of the high-end audio establishment of which this article’s readership is, although it is admittedly tenderer and dare I say sleepy.
The other one, released by Silva Screen Records titled, The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Collection, was released on June 24, 2016. The particular track of Ave Maria Guarani was originally recorded in 1996, this time performed by the Crouch End Festival Chorus, City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by David Temple and Paul Bateman. This rendition is very much akin to the Morricone original in tempo and urgency, the singing ethereal and powerful. In the movie, the recently converted villagers under the direction of Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) were attempting to appeal to the visiting Papal emissary Cardinal Altamirano via their westernized musical performance of this music of their deserving Spanish status and thus of state protection.
Spoiler alert: it can be a painful story to watch.
In important ways, the subject matter is a stark reminder of the victimization of natives by the politics of two warring countries, and how Rome succumbed. Nonetheless, example of learned leadership in the Father Gabriel character and lessons of redemption via religion in the Captain Rodrigo Mendoza character (Robert De Niro) is at the core of the storytelling, and how often do we see these two names coalesce on the big screen, at the height of the Hollywood moviemaking era?
Morricone declared the score his best composition near the end of his life. I’m sure Karajan himself would love to have conducted this if he had lived just a bit longer.

Talk about Wagner, and the luxurious tone of his compositions is overriding and simply irrepressible. Of all the orchestral recordings of the maestro’s work, the 1984 Deutsche Grammophon release of Wagner – Karajan, orchestral suites of the Ring Cycle operas played by the Berlin Philharmonic and conducted by Herbert von Karajan and the 1982 Decca release of Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen (orchestral excerpts), by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Georg Solti, persist throughout the decades as my reference, CDs and LPs, so much so that I still have one last LP of each sealed, waiting to see the light of day when my present copies finish their run. A recent surprise is the Bruckner cycle with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by Andris Nelsons, released in 2022 and also by DG, recordings of which are supplemented with ten excellent Wagner Ring Cycle orchestral excerpts no less.
Don’t get me bored with the three-day feat of operatic processions because while opera fans love it, I’d rather not see it lest the orchestral editions end up trivialized afterwards. I cannot recount enough instances when the actual stage performance ruined my longstanding impressions of the music by itself. “Is that it?” These Ring Cycle orchestral suites are a blessing especially for the modern ear.
On March 20, 2026, Deutsche Grammophon released another Wagner The Ring recording of note, of a performance made on June 28, 2025 by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Tarmo Peltokoski. The title is The Ring – An Orchestral Adventure. Neither the conductor nor the ensemble is well known in the international circle although the HKPO’s regional clout, I understand, is considerable. As in a majority of art institutions, prosperity of organizations such as the HKPO relies heavily upon the level of wealth of the society’s upper class. A financial hub of Asia since the Seventies, Hong Kong enjoyed vast inpouring of human and financial resources from the United Kingdom and China. Many pivotal Hong Kong organizations to this day continue to bolster British senior management, and the HKPO as an ensemble of western music stands to benefit and prosper. The HKPO website features a “Watch & Listen” portal featuring many live concert performances; its HKPhilharmonic YouTube channel boasts 17.2K subscribers and 291 videos for a local population of some 8 million, many of which are of complete symphonic works, ranging from a 57:10 Mahler Symphony No. 1 to a 49 minutes and 27 seconds long Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2. Guest conductors featured includes Vasily Petrenko on a Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 to Paavo Jarvi on a 17:18 Rimsky-Korsakov Capriccio Espagnol.
This particular recording of Wagner’s Ring cycle is based on a complete rearrangement by Dutch composer Henk de Vlieger in 1991 of the fifteen hours Wagner Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle into an hour-long orchestral feat. There are three other similar recordings in current catalogs, all play to around 60 minutes; this DG release contains four additional “single edit” tracks of around 21 minutes, totaling 88 minutes. The unique merit of this release is the degree to which the record label is able to capture the musicianship of the ensemble and the quality of the recording.
None of the previous recordings, sans the aforementioned 2022 Andris Nelsons cycle, sounds as extended, dynamic and fresh as the subject of this review. For instance, the rendition of “Trauermusik” at track 13 is the most pervasive I’ve experienced to date; its recording captures even the harps on the far left, and the horns are directed to sound off at such musical intensity and reproduction resolution that I felt my blood boiling at the go. I didn’t know the musicians at the HKPO play at such level.
Then, there is the buildup to “The Valkyrie” from track 4 to track 5, which commences on continuous progression with no break, and the excitement is palpable. Vlieger’s arrangement calls for a non-stop, continuous playing and it is far more satisfying to experience than any four-movement symphony that comes to mind. Next, all the while we are carried along through the music comes track 12, “Siegfried’s Death”, one of the most memorable moments of all of Wagner’s music, and what a goosebumping jolt to the psyche it is the way the musicians of HKPO rendered it. There is tremendous energy being released, on account of not just the expertly playing but also the immaculate sound of DG circa 2026. And the whole experience goes out with a satisfying bang with track 14, “Brunnhilde’s Sacrifice”.
Sure, we have the Strauss tone poems but this one runs for an hour! And the mood is sustained throughout sans the typical movement changes in symphonies. Why there are only a handful of recordings of this baffles the mind. We are perhaps living in the century of short attention span, and this recording is the antidote.
The HKPO flaunts its unique blend of high-energy playing with top-tier control and fluidity. The opulence of the Deutsche Grammophon recording is such that as if instruments willed are of renown origins. And audiophile moments abound. The crux of all this is the fact that this is a Wagner creation, choreographed into one dynamic piece full of intensity and vibrancy. One couldn’t ask for a more evocative orchestration.
In fact, the highly disciplined and measured playing of the HKPO reminds me of the Berlin sound, one of dispassionate ease but utter precision and unrelenting flow in playing. It’s like watching Jascha Heifetz of late versus the rest, you won’t see the slightest flinching on his face while he performed the most astounding feat, but the musicianship is first-rate. The result is a work of reference at such extent allowing the audience from which to draw emotions.
Vlieger also rearranged Wagner’s Parsifal in 1993 and Meistersinger in 2005, and there is the Tristan and Isolde “Prelude” and “Liebestod”, and many others. I desperately want to hear what the HKPO and DG can do next, and let’s hope this release gets successful enough for them to continue recording.

There will be plenty of reviews of the Billie Amp Mk3, but none like this. In addition to using the Mk3 in a standard system configuration, I will report on using it in my Faux Mono Integrated Amp configuration, in which two stereo integrated amps are used together in a horizontally bi-amped system. Why do so? Because it makes a commendable product like the Billie Amp perform well beyond its expected parameters to reach the level of sets of components many times the price of two Mk3.
Let’s climb the stairway to Heaven, not the one sung about by Led Zeppelin, or the one dreamed about by Jacob, the son of Abraham, who slept in the desert and used a rock for a pillow (see Genesis 28:10-22). This stairway to Heaven is comprised of performance steps reaching an ethereal state of listening using the Heaven 11 Billie Amp Mk3! Should you choose to follow my lead to the end, I will lead you to a level of system performance that few others will reach, even those who have reviewed the Billie Mk3. I hope your curiosity is aroused, because this review will be atypical.
I am picking up where I left off in my first review regarding the Heaven 11 Billie Amp Mk2. This review will compare the Mk2 and Mk3, especially in my favored system configuration utilizing two integrated amps for a more powerful and involving experience.
Differences between the Mk2 and the Mk3
The size and weight of the Billie Mk3 have grown furtively, taking the integrated from the earlier 12 pounds and dimensions of 14.25” x 8” x 3” to a one-inch increase in length. The unit retains the smart blend of retro-modern design aesthetic with its stark black casework, LED illuminated pair of tubes, and warmly appointed front control knobs made of natural materials such as wood or stone. The price of the base Mk3 has increased by roughly 33% to $2,995. This product is one of the few unquestionably worthwhile purchases across the global HiFi landscape and I consider it a value on a par with Magnepan or Vandersteen entry level speakers.
The few visible updates are seen on the rear panel, where a USB C and a second Toslink input has been added and some of the inputs have been rearranged. I appreciate that the Pre/Sub Output jacks are highlighted. The Billie Mk3 is an especially smart choice for space constrained or budget-limited listeners. One could do a lot worse in pursuit of sound than to hook up their phone to the Mk3. The most profound changes are unseen, optional user-installed upgrades, which I will detail below.
In my review of the Mk2, I suggested that Heaven 11 upgrade the RCA input jacks, but it appears for the sake of affordability they are unchanged. The company might have to retool the chassis for such a change, so I can see why they have not done so. Still, I hope that in the future with new designs such an improvement is employed. Does that issue put me off from using the Mk2 or Mk3? Absolutely not! I have had other components with similar RCA jacks. The firmness of the connection is not confidence inspiring, but it never seems to affect the operation. Thankfully, the company is putting the money into serious speaker posts, and the ones used in the Mk2 and Mk3 are exemplary! The heavy posts inspire confidence when heavier cords with spades are cinched down. Far better the speaker posts are strong than the other way around.
As it appears a similar chassis was used for the Mk3, there is still quite close spacing of the output posts, and larger spades are closely anchored. Thus, I continue my precautionary practice of slipping a piece of leather (any non-conducting material will do) between the posts and spades to ensure that if one is loosened it does not contact the other. We know what would happen then, and I take no chances with a class D amp’s output channels shorting. The spades have never come loose previously; the posts are very good. But I am not about to chance it. It may seem odd, then, that I go about system building by splitting digital signals out from sources and horizontally wiring pairs of integrated amplifiers to speakers! While these are odd methods, I have not found them to pose serious risk to components. If they did, I wouldn’t use such methods. As usual, such activities are “do at your own risk”.
Baseline system
Pertaining to all comparisons of the Mk2 and Mk3 versions of the Billie Amp and all optional upgrades for the Mk3, the front end of the system remained as follows:

All power cables were 2m (Iconoclast) Belden BAV Power Cables.
Comparisons of the optional Performance Headphone Module, Performance DAC Module, the ICEpower class D module of the Mk2 versus the Hypex class D module of the Mk3, and steel versus gold pin tubes were all conducted by comparison of a single unit, not the Faux Mono Integrated amp system configuration discussed below. Both Qobuz and Tidal’s upper tier music services were used, and the user interface was PS Audio’s proprietary Connect app, which worked splendidly with both music services.
Performance headphone module upgrade
I am blessed to play with 6’ tall speakers, so normally I do not get excited about headphones. When I am older and crustier, I will cease maneuvering 200+ pound speakers in favor of toting 2-pound headphones. Nevertheless, as Itai Azerad, the founder and product designer of Heaven 11, sent the optional headphone upgrade board, I felt compelled to try it. I don’t own the latest audiophile headphones, but I do have a pair of Sony MDR-NC7 noise cancelling headphones from 2018, a decidedly non-audiophile-approved set of cans, that have been stowed away in a box of ancillary equipment. They have a frequency response of “30-20,000 Hz”, no worse than many small tower speakers, so they are the ideal zero-cost product for this review. After all, is the typical Heaven 11 customer going to lay down a couple thousand dollars for a headphone? More likely, a headphone user with this integrated amp will have reasonably priced ones. Thus, the Sony headset represents two things, budget audiophiles’ high aspirations and limited budgets, and proof that one does not need all elements of an audio system optimized to hear upgrades.
It is a distinct advantage in reviewing to have two configurable devices side by side. It only took a few minutes to unscrew the footers, lift the lid, swap the board, and close the unit. Kudos for Heaven 11 trusting in the basic competence of the audiophile community and not charging for return (or round trip) shipping and bench time for upgrades. A set of identical components, one with upgrades, offers close to real-time comparisons and chases away any uncertainty whether the upgrades are efficacious; operationally switching between the two units during playback took me about 15 seconds.
As the two Mk3 units were connected identically, the headphone comparison was the quickest I have done. Starting with the music playing through both units, I kept the volume down on them both to silence the mains and subwoofers, plugged the headset into one of the units, and brought up the volume. To switch, I lowered the volume, plugged the headphones into the other unit with the upgrade Performance Headphone Module ($150 if purchased separately, $99 when ordered pre-configured with the amp), and brought up its volume.

What sets the featured pianist here apart from the rest is a keener sensibility towards the music and the instrument itself. All professional pianists can play the same piece but every now and then one emerges with a profound temperament that drives her artistic expression. The playing of Taiwanese pianist Weiyin Chen in her 2026 release La Belle Epoque contains an incredibly deep sense of self expression that each piece sounded tailor-composed for her. And thus the 1919 Boulanger Three Pieces and the Schumann showpiece Papillons sounds personable and fresh. Most pianists deviate not from the instructions set by the composer, and some of them indeed made some of the most beautiful renditions on record, but the Chen recording offers us a rare treat of a playing full of confidence and proficiency, and most importantly, the seeming aloofness throughout the album makes the music ethereal and pure. Chen could just be playing for her own enjoyment as far as the recording studio staff was concerned.
But then the Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker Suite on this album comes along and breaks through the air like golden ray piercing morning mist, establishing the performance as seemingly the truest to form over the orchestral norm. I daresay this single-instrument rendition is closer to the heart and the piano sound makes it imminently and naturally more hummable. And then the Falla Ritual Fire Dance and the pianist’s 3 minutes 18 seconds improvisation on the Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade dazzle with not just the beautiful sound Chen coerced from the piano but the utmost pervasive expression.
But before the Tchaikovsky epic and after the Schumann classic is a five-minute excerpt of the Debussy Clair de lune, followed by the Chopin Waltz in C-Sharp Minor Op. 64 No. 2. To some, the sheer delight arising from Chen’s coercion of the keys on these two works alone will worth the ticket price.
The performance from this release is so much more than a showcase of her skills and musicianship, it draws you in, so much so it is as if the pieces were composed just for you. It is simply some of the most uplifting, delightful and engaging music-making I’ve heard in recent years. I enthusiastically recommend this recording if not for system demonstration as well as the periodic palate cleansing. Available in 24-bit 96kHz download.
