The etymology of the word 'Campana' comes from the Late Latin 'campāna', "bronze vessel of Campania", and this, in turn, is an abbreviation of 'vasa campana' ("vessels of Campania"), according to the RAE (Royal Spanish Academy).

The bell as a musical instrument was used to celebrate; to warn of danger, announce a death, call people or signal moments of prayer.

Before the spread of clocks and alert systems, bell ringing served as a means of communication capable of announcing rituals, emergencies, and political events with successive peals.

Bells made of different materials are sonic witnesses of history. They constitute archives of the past that help to understand cultural practices and comprehend the social organisation of other eras, maintained Luis Armando Quintanar Basurto, historian and cataloguer of cultural assets, in the discussion 'Historical letters on bells'.

At the House of the First Printing Press of America of the Autonomous Metropolitan University in Mexico City (UAM), the specialist highlighted the historical, symbolic, and public value of these cultural assets, whose inscriptions, sounds, and uses preserve part of shared memory.

In addition to marking the passage of time, for centuries they regulated the rhythm of the community, disseminated news, accompanied celebrations, and contributed to building identity in towns and cities.

For his part, the maestro Alejandro Hernández García, head of the venue, recalled that the building functioned as a foundry workshop in the 16th century, which is why it was known as the "House of the Bells". "In this site, some of the first ones destined for the Metropolitan Cathedral and New Hispanic temples were moulded," he pointed out.

Based on the link between the printed word and resonance, Quintanar Basurto - one of the greatest experts on the subject - proposed understanding these objects as testimonies in which writing, technique, devotion, and collective heritage converge.

With more than 800 pieces documented in Mexico, the historian explained that their inscriptions, names, dates, and titles provide information on cultural expressions. However, their reading is often difficult due to deterioration, the accumulation of dirt, or their location in hard-to-reach towers.

Added to this, before the standardisation of writing, spelling variations and missing letters were common. The founders used movable type similar to that of the printing press and, in the absence of a character, they improvised typographical solutions. "The brain completes what is missing," he detailed.

The talk delved into the sonic and political reach of these bronze pieces. The height of the towers responded to a logic of competition: the higher the elevation, the greater the propagation of sound. Under that principle, the Metropolitan Cathedral in the capital of Mexico sought to impose its sonic presence over the valley with large pieces placed at more than 50 metres.

Beyond technical aspects, the researcher insisted on the human character of this heritage. "We are not looking at bells, we are looking at people," he affirmed, warning that behind each one exist the communities that made them possible and gave them meaning over the years.

He clarified that legends such as the one attributing the placement of examples in the Puebla Cathedral to angels are part of symbolic systems that allowed for the explanation of the unknown and the construction of stories about the past.

He reflected on the transformation of the acoustic landscape. "Before, you didn't control time; you controlled the rhythm of life," he said, referring to the loss of centrality of these peals in the face of contemporary technologies.

Regarding their conservation, he warned that numerous objects disappear due to a lack of records, inadequate interventions, or structural damage, aggravated by earthquakes such as the one that occurred in 2017. In several cases, the collapses were related to previous modifications that weakened the upper parts of the temples.

At the closing, Hernández García underlined the importance of preserving this legacy as part of a living tradition that brings together knowledge, practice, and community.

He added that their care requires strengthening the transmission of knowledge and linking new generations with this heritage, so that these instruments remain an active part of the shared past.

A separate postcard: Bells in Spain and the world

Bells are not exclusive to one landscape; they are a universal language. In Spain, their value is such that the manual ringing of bells has been recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This art, which requires physical skill and knowledge of traditional rhythms, is a living testimony that survives in towns and cities, maintaining a sonic dialogue with history.

If we look further afield, the world offers a fascinating diversity: from the deep and spiritual sound of bronze bells in the Buddhist temples of Asia —designed for meditation and calm— to the carillons of Northern Europe, capable of interpreting complex melodies over the roofs of cities. Each region has moulded its bronzes according to its own culture, turning the ringing into an acoustic map that, although diverse in form, continues to fulfil the same essential function: to mark time, to summon the community, and to remind those who listen that history continues to ring.

Here, a voice is given to women in love whom everyone talks about, but who are rarely listened to. These are love stories that did not have a happy ending.

“We have all experienced or gone through a pain that consumes us from within, but we can also all help one another move forward. We are not alone; there is always someone worth living for, there will always be someone willing to help, even if it is only through a child’s smile; there will always be someone who listens to us, there will always be something that drives us to climb out of even the deepest hole. There is just one detail,” the author adds.

This book tells the story of turning a complex urban problem into a formulation that is comprehensible, desirable and politically workable.

Living with dignity

The opening chapters trace the evolution of the modern city, from Le Corbusier's functionalism and the rigid separation of uses through to the geography of urban time.

La ciudad de los 15 minutos is a book for understanding one of the central arguments of contemporary life: what kind of city we want to live in, now that time, air, health and neighbourhood ties have become political matters. The closing stretch turns to digital tools, territorial information and artificial intelligence as allies of the proximate city. Moreno does not present technology as a substitute for urban policy or for community participation; he presents it as a means. The involvement of residents proves decisive. It needs data, certainly, but also real patterns of use, community ties, negotiation over resources and an idea of the common good capable of addressing inequality, gentrification and territorial divides.

What cruise passengers look for

The five main factors influencing passengers when choosing a ship are “the itinerary and destinations (the destination matters more than the brand); value for money (the final cost including all extras); service on board (attention, cleanliness and sufficient staff); the size of the ship; and genuine all-inclusive packages with no hidden costs (drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi with no surprises…)”, said Jesús García.

He went on to explain that passenger loyalty is stronger towards cruising itself than towards individual cruise lines. “In the first case, 82% plan to take another cruise and fall in love with this type of holiday. The percentage of travellers loyal to a particular cruise line, however, is lower. In fact, 72% say they are loyal to cruising, but add that they are willing to change cruise lines. For every passenger loyal to one brand, there are three who will switch without hesitation.” In this respect, “loyalty is to the destination and the experience, not the brand. If another cruise line offers a better itinerary or price, the customer will switch”. Likewise, “loyalty programmes help retain customers, but they are not decisive”; and García warned that there are early signs of “an increase in the percentage of passengers who do not return after their first or second cruise experience”.

The largest international Spanish-language cruise event

FITUR Cruises is the section specialising in cruise tourism at the International Tourism Trade Fair, organised by IFEMA MADRID in collaboration with Cruceroadicto. It will hold its sixth edition from 20 to 24 January 2027, with Puerto Rico as its global sponsor.

Following the growth recorded in previous editions, FITUR Cruises will move to a new location in Hall 4, with the largest exhibition space in its history. The Cuemanco Centre for Biological and Aquaculture Research (CIBAC) aims to release 800 Ambystoma mexicanum specimens by the end of 2026.

The axolotl’s growing popularity as a cultural, tourist and commercial symbol of Mexico City presents an opportunity to raise awareness of its importance, but also carries risks associated with misinformation, excessive marketing and irresponsible trade, warned Dr José Antonio Ocampo Cervantes, head of the Cuemanco Centre for Biological and Aquaculture Research (CIBAC) at the Xochimilco Unit of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM).

In an interview, he explained that the “Casa abierta al tiempo” (House open to time) of Mexico’s Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) has been promoting conservation programmes through CIBAC for more than three decades. As part of these efforts, work is under way to release around 800 Ambystoma mexicanum specimens into Lake Huetzalin in the district’s Ecological Park, with the aim of establishing a breeding group in the wild.

The project is the result of more than three years of environmental monitoring to assess factors such as water quality, food availability and the viability of the natural environment. The aim is to carry out the release towards the end of this year, before the start of the breeding season.

“If between 10 and 20 per cent manage to survive, it will be a very significant achievement because they could reproduce and contribute to restoring wild populations,” he said.

The initiative is supported through donations from the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, as well as through the academic collaboration of Dr Alfredo Cruz Ramírez of the Centre for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav), who is involved in health and genetic-variability studies of the colonies maintained by the University.

Referring to the phenomenon known as “axolotlisation”, he said that although the animal’s image is used in advertising campaigns, articles and images, this popularity does not always translate into benefits for its conservation.

“Many people know the Mexican amphibian from video games, cartoons or promotional products, but that does not mean they understand its true situation in the wild or the problems facing its ecosystem.”

One of the main dangers, he added, is that growing demand for specimens as pets may encourage illegal capture or lead people to acquire them without understanding the specialised care they require. This is why it is important to obtain them from management facilities authorised by the Directorate-General for Wildlife, where their provenance and proper breeding are guaranteed.

Dr Ocampo Cervantes stressed that although the Xochimilco amphibian (Ambystoma mexicanum) is classified as endangered, this does not mean the species is likely to disappear biologically in the short term, since colonies exist in laboratories, aquariums and scientific research organisations in various countries around the world.

“The real risk is the ecological extinction of wild populations and the loss of their original home. If the places where they live disappear, a fundamental part of Mexico’s biological and genetic heritage will be lost.”

The researcher noted that Mexico is home to 17 species, 16 of which are endemic. Although most public attention is focused on the species found in that borough, other varieties remain poorly studied and face similar threats.

The main factors behind their decline include habitat loss and fragmentation, the reduction of bodies of water, pollution, pesticide use and the introduction of invasive species.

According to the specialist, their preservation depends on protecting the wetlands of Xochimilco, Tláhuac and neighbouring areas of Mexico City. He also called on the public to behave responsibly when visiting these natural areas and to avoid activities that contribute to environmental degradation.

“The axolotl is a symbol of national identity, but its conservation does not depend on it appearing on more products or in more campaigns. It depends on our ability to preserve the ecosystems where it still survives in the wild,” the expert said.

The nomination was submitted by the photographer Isabel Muñoz, the art historian Víctor Nieto and the film director Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón. The signatories reconfirmed their proposal, defending the "splendid work carried out by this institution for the benefit of Spanish audiovisual heritage, with the threefold aim of conserving, restoring and disseminating it. Through its sustained and decisive work, it has become an essential point of reference within our country's cultural landscape."

The Academy has been keen to underline the importance of publicly recognising work that is "not always sufficiently valued", yet essential to the protection of Spanish audiovisual heritage.

Established by the Academy in 1943, the Corporation's Medal of Honour is awarded annually to a Spanish or foreign individual or institution that has distinguished itself outstandingly in the study, promotion or dissemination of the arts, in artistic creation, or in the protection of historical, cultural and natural heritage.

Created by decree on 13 February 1953 under the name Filmoteca Nacional de España, the institution was founded with the mission of preserving the country's audiovisual memory. Since then, its work has established it as an indispensable reference point within the Spanish cultural landscape.

The Filmoteca Española currently holds close to 50,000 films, along with some 12,000 that are still only provisionally catalogued, amounting to more than 600,000 reels of celluloid, as well as the complete NO-DO archive, made up of 70,500 audiovisual documents that bear witness to several decades of Spanish film and social history. Added to this vast heritage are books, magazines, photographs and specialised collections acquired or donated over the years.

The institution carries out its work from three main sites: the Palacio del Marqués de Perales, its administrative headquarters; the historic Cine Doré, an emblematic film exhibition venue in Madrid; the "Carlos Saura" Centre for the Conservation and Restoration of Film Collections, in Pozuelo de Alarcón; and the so-called "Voltio", an underground space adjoining it, specially equipped to preserve materials made on cellulose nitrate, among them much of the little Spanish silent cinema that survives.

One of the essential pillars of the Filmoteca Española is its audiovisual restoration work, carried out by leading specialists. Thanks to this highly specialised work, numerous films have been recovered for present and future generations.

It was recently announced that the Spanish, French and Italian film archives, together with the Filmmuseum München, are driving the reconstruction of Don Quixote, the Cervantes adaptation that Orson Welles began in 1957 and left unfinished when he died in 1985.

Alongside this conservation work, the Filmoteca Española maintains an intense public and cultural programme at the Cine Doré, now a landmark venue for film lovers, with daily screenings devoted to cinema from different periods, directors and styles.

The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando has worked closely with the institution on the biennial seasons "Las Bellas Artes en el Cine" (2022), "Compositores académicos del cine español" (2024) and "El Museo, protagonista", currently running. These initiatives have strengthened the ties between the two bodies and consolidated a collaboration intended to continue.

With this decision, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando reaffirms its historic commitment to defending and promoting the institutions and creators that contribute decisively to the cultural enrichment of Spanish society.

Reading it, we accompany a 25-year-old patient whose lovesickness takes on the language of medicine: arrhythmias, tests, treatments and emergency surgery, all serving as a metaphor for heartbreak, loneliness, abandonment and sensitivity.

With an intimate, raw voice, the author, Gilraen Eärfalas, weaves poetry together with medical terminology to explore fragility, emotional dependence, the father wound and the rebuilding of the self. Medicine and literature are closely related: literature makes it possible to see the person before the diagnosis, and medicine makes it possible to see people's emotions through their symptoms.

Desfibrilador (defibrillator) is a book about heartbreak, but also about childhood, about trauma and about the need to learn not to resuscitate what has already died.

An original proposition that fuses medical terminology with emotional poetry, building a fragmented narrative that takes the form of a medical record in order to explore the grief of lost love through the physical body. With a generational voice that speaks especially closely to young readers, the text combines direct, intimate and visual language, capable of engaging both with the sensibility of contemporary poetry and with the new spaces for literary circulation on social media.

Love as a physical illness

The book translates heartbreak into the language of the body: arrhythmias, diagnoses, wounds, emergencies and treatments are used to tell the story of a break-up as though it were a clinical picture. It is a highly visual, instantly recognisable way of turning emotional pain into a physical symptom.

Grief and the difficulty of healing

The work sets up a central tension: the poetic voice wants to heal, but also fears losing the last link with the person who left. Pain appears as a form of memory, almost as proof that it all happened. Medicine as poetic and narrative structure. More than a simple aesthetic device, the medical world organises the entire book: medical record, admission, referrals, diagnoses and hospital wards. This gives the collection a clear identity and makes it an original proposition.

The author, Gilraen Eärfalas

Born in Chilpancingo, Guerrero (Mexico). She is a clinical laboratory technician and a general practitioner. Her literary career began by accident, when she lost her notebook of poems and decided to start a blog where she could keep all her texts safe forever, or at least until she forgot the password. In 2018 she self-published her first book, Desfibrilador, later reissued under the Planeta imprint.
