AWARD-WINNING RADIO SHOW IS AXED BUT HOTLINE CONTINUES

The popular Sunday morning radio show ‘The Full Breakfast‘ has been dropped from the schedules on Bradford-based station West Yorkshire’s Classic Gold. On 3rd January Classic Gold was re-launched as ‘West Yorkshire’s Big AM’ – and the decision was made to leave behind one of the station’s best-loved programmes.

The show, which is produced by Christian radio group HCJB-UK, has picked-up five major awards since it started back in Easter 1997. Full Breakfast presenter Colin Lowther commented “we are sad to be leaving behind such a fantastic audience. There have been loads of laughs over the past couple of years and hopefully we’ve made some people think what life’s all about; but we are grateful to Classic Gold for taking a risk with us”. Colin also hopes that The Full Breakfast has exploded a few myths; he said, “when people think of religion on radio or TV they tend to expect dog collars and posh accents. We were trying to show that God is bothered about real people rather than buildings or doctrines, and that having a ‘religious’ show doesn’t mean endless discussion about church conflict. We were trying to affirm good news – with a Yorkshire accent of course!”

Despite the show being off the air, the Prayer Hotline will continue each Sunday. Callers to the Hotline get through to an answering machine where they can leave their requests; they will then be prayed for the following week by around forty people.

Toronto Christian Radio Seek Review

A legislated appeal to federal cabinet has been filed that could result in Toronto getting Canada’s first Christian talk station and the city’s first Christian music station. In its recent Toronto radio license decisions, Canada’s broadcast regulator, the CRTC, shut out applications for new radio station licenses for Toronto’s first Christian talk station on AM 740 and Toronto’s first Christian music station on FM 93.5. Your letters – needed now – plus the appeal as filed by applicant and broadcaster Andy McNabb, could cause the government to send the two decisions back to the CRTC for reconsideration and hearing.

Despite our radio station applications’ exceeding quantitative licensing criteria, the frequencies were awarded to the much smaller adults 50+/big band and urban/rap music markets this past June. The CRTC would not issue comment as to why the Christian applications were denied. In any and all cases, the largest unserved market in Toronto is left without a full-time Christian talk or music signal covering Toronto with a quality signal.

The proven fact is that our two stations will reach the largest unserved radio market in Toronto – the 3.7 million Christians of Toronto. The stations will each blanket the market with inspirational talk and music signals of high technical quality, each reaching more Canadians with Christian broadcasting than any other Christian radio station in Canada.

Brazilian sect buys London radio station

A Brazilian-based Christian evangelical group has bought a London radio station from the British-based Egyptian businessman, Mohamed Al Fayed.

The group, which calls itself the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, said it would not use the station to spread its controversial religious message, but admitted it would target people in what it called difficult situations.

The station, Liberty Radio, is aimed at women and currently has around fifty-thousand listeners.

The founder of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Edir Macedo has been at the centre of corruption allegations, while the French authorities recently described the sect as dangerous.

The Church was founded in Brazil more than twenty-years ago and has interests in Brazilian television and radio stations, as well as in a second division football club.

One of our Partners in New Zealand made a special gift last Christmas – $5000 to help some poor families in the Islands.

Our people (the people who attend our Listener Home Bible Studies) were able to use that money to reach out to poor families in their villages.

There is a lot of of talk about God in the Islands, but little is seen of His grace and love and power. This donor’s special gift enabled us to put actions with our words as a powerful demonstration of the Gospel. With some amazing results.

SAT-7 BOOTH DRAWS CROWDS AT CAIRO BOOK FAIR

A Fun and Safe Outing for Families

SAT-7 participated in the 2012 Cairo International Book Fair between 22nd January and 7th February. The SAT-7 KIDS channel also sponsored two special “KIDS days” with on-screen celebrities from the channel engaging with a large and happy crowd.

SAT-7 set aside two special days for children on 4th and 5th February-events promoted on the SAT-7 KIDS channel by Mr. Know from the program Why is That? Staff welcomed families to the SAT-7 exhibition with balloons, brochures, calendars and bookmarks. The booth boasted a bright banner portraying famous characters from the shows on SAT-7 KIDS. It was designed with a hole through which children could poke their faces – and take photos, as if they were actually standing with the characters. Kodak® sponsored the activity and printed photos on the spot – for free. Mounir Zackary from the show Caricature with Uncle Mounir was there to draw and autograph caricatures for the kids. A second booth was set up for free face painting. Crowds of excited children and parents from all religious backgrounds blocked the aisle and kept the two booths busy all day long. Adjacent booksellers and exhibitors also said that the crowds greatly helped their own business on those days!

In addition to the children’s smiles, many parents gave positive feedback about SAT-7 programming. They expressed their love for SAT-7 channels and their gratitude for its ministry, especially mentioning the ground-breaking 12-hour live Night of Worship and Prayer on 11/11/11 and the New Year’s Eve Worship from Tahrir Square. Parents shared that their children are watching SAT-7 KIDS all day long and that they are blessed with what is on screen. One mother described it as a trustworthy channel and the best-ever television channel for children. Recent independent surveys show that SAT-7 KIDS now has more than 9 million viewers across the region.
