Black Widow (2020) Review

If you’ve been reading my reviews long enough, one I thank you but, two you’ll know I love to be surprised by good books. I’m not saying cliffhangers or plot twists, I mean casually checking out books on the shelves and having one totally catch me off guard by just how good it is. Kelly Thompson’s Black Widow (2020) is one of these gems.

I love Natasha. I’ve always loved the widow. I love her look, I love her back story, I love her attitude, let’s just say I love her whole aesthetic. So I was a little disappointed when her last book from the Soska’s missed the mark for me. Especially since the two runs before that from Mark Waid with Chris Samnee, and Phil Noto with Nathan Henry Edmondson were absolute bangers. Thankfully Kelly Thompson and Elena Casagrande have brought it!

Black Widow (2020) is full of fun and games. That pun is intended as a villain we haven’t seen in a while makes an appearance. I wonder if I’ve seen him since Avengers Arena way back in 2012? Have you guessed who it is yet?

black widow (2020)The book is gorgeous thanks to the interior art of Elena Casagrande and a myriad of amazing variants from artists like J Scott Campbell. Delving past the beautiful interiors lies an interesting story of being lost then found. Found by who and where is where this story really unfolds. The usual suspects are here too, you know who I’m talking about. The closest friends to Nat who love to hate each other, that’s right, Bucky and Clint. I cannot express enough how much everything flowed together in Black Widow (2020), I couldn’t wait to write up this review.

Start here and get even more hyped for Natasha’s upcoming solo movie. And the wonderful variant covers continue for issue two including the “timeless variant” from Alex Ross that is just as spectacular as you’d expect it to be.

August 12th Reviews: “Big Girls” and “Seven Secrets”

Another week and another twofer review. Aren’t you a lucky one. Maybe the big two publishers pumping out Metal and Empyre aren’t enough for you. Indulge your inner hipster and step out of the mainstream into these two indies this week.  Big Girls and Seven Secrets.

Big Girls #1

Seven SecretsFirst up from the largest of the indies, Image Comics comes Jason Howard’s Big Girls. As I look at how I wrote that it makes it out to be like some Russ Meyers sexploitation flick but I assure you, it’s not at all that.

Jason Howard (Stealth, Trees) both writes and pencils this sci-fi apocalyptic tale of a future filled with giant kauju like monsters that are battled and destroyed by giant women known as Big Girls. This is all because of a birth defect that causes megaorganisms, giant people. The problem? The boys become men, the men become monsters.

Big Girls was surprisingly enjoyable. At first glance I didn’t think much of it until I actually put in the time to read and feel out the plot and characters. On the surface it’s just a 50ft woman fighting monsters. But as you dive deeper you can’t help but feel the not so hidden message within: that women must protect and nurture from adult toxic monstrous men.

It’s a visual telling of the times and I liked the hell out of it.

Seven Secrets #1

Seven SecretsThe second review comes from my other favorite indie publisher BOOM! Studios, Seven Secrets.

Much like Big Girls, Seven Secrets looks like a run of the mill action book. Albeit easily recognizable if you’ve been ingesting Daniele Di Nicuolo‘s amazing art from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers books. If you haven’t been inhaling that series I highly recommend it. He joins Tom Taylor of DC’s highly reviewed DCeased series making this a banger of a team-up.

In Seven Secrets The Order entrusts Keepers to protect and guard, you guessed it, seven secrets in seven cases. No this isn’t some riddle, it’s the plot, and it’s super exciting mixed with Di Nicuolo’s perfect action-movie-to-paper artistic styling. Combining a little The Order with a pinch of Mission Impossible and maybe a sprinkle of American Ninja mixed in and you have yourself a fun little joy ride.

NCBD August 5th Reviews: Fire Power & Alien: The Original Screenplay

Oof, it’s been a while since our last review hasn’t it? There’s been some great titles week in and week out like That Texas Blood, DC Death Metal, and even Empyre was a surprise. But nothing was really hopping off the shelves and popping me in the mouth until this week. So as it goes, you get treated with not one but two reviews! Fire Power #1 and Alien: The Original Screenplay #1.

Fire Power #1

Owen Johnson has left his mysterious past behind him, having studied the secret Shaolin art of Fire Power. He’s traded in the power of throwing fire balls to flaunt another trade of fathers everywhere, Dad Jokes. While dad jokes and bad puns do make for good humor, I’d venture to say ninjas are a bit more entertaining and Fire Power #1 just introduced them into Owen’s life again.

Robert Kirkman books always have a great feel to them. They often are pure entertainment, why so many of them get adapted into TV series for good reason. Fire Power has that feel. It also doesn’t hurt to have Chris Samnee doing your art. Fans of Kirkman, Iron Fist, and anything Kung Fu will really enjoy Fire Power. You don’t have to wait too long for issue number two either, it should be sitting on the shelf right next to number one since they both released on the same day!

As I promised, here’s your second review, albeit a little longer but not without too much more love and affection.

Alien: The Original Screenplay #1

I love Ridley Scott’s Alien. It is in my humble opinion not only one of the best sci-fi movies out there but also one of the best horror films. It’s a master craft piece of work that can be both studied and adored. Every time I watch it I’m just in awe at what they accomplished in 1979 with both technology and style.

Alien: The Original Screenplay is an adaptation of the OG screenplay done in ’76 using the descriptions of the visuals and ship designs before H. R. Giger’s heavy influence. The comic’s story is still from the original screenplay writer Dan O’Bannon but has been adapted and scripted by Cristiano Seixas. The art is amazing and comes from Guilherme Balbi who’s done some other work for Dark Horse. It would be unfair not to include the inks from Candice Han who’s work from the first page alone makes everything pop.

Alien: The Original Screenplay is a great choice for anyone looking to sink their teeth into some delicious sci-fi. You don’t even need to be a fan of Alien, it’s just an all together awesome read. I can’t wait to see everything evolve and revisit Alien in a different light.

Wynd #1 ReviewWynd #1 Review

Wynd #1 from BOOM! Studios kind of just popped up on racks this week. Previewed as a trade scheduled to arrive later this year, BOOM! thought it was time to give comic readers some much needed solace from everything around the world and surprise us with a very good original new series.

A kingdom ruled by a sick king. Its borders protected for ages against those around it known as the Weirdbloods. But things are not as they seem as a mysterious bounty hunter by the name of The Bandaged Man arrives in the kingdom. Questions are forming. Rumors are spreading. Conspiracies are being spun.

Wynd however, a boy who works in a restaurant with his family in Pipetown lives in his own happy naive world. Although his adopted family loves him and has taken him in as one of their own, it seems the Bandaged Man’s arrival in the kingdom can’t be a coincidence.

Wynd #1 ReviewJames Tynion IV, writer of the already banger Something Is Killing The Children, is joined by the art of Michael Dialynas for Wynd #1. A book that looks like something you’d see on Cartoon Network or exclusively on Netflix. It’s art has a bold animation style to it. Wynd’s innocent looking style masks the much darker drama unfolding in the kingdom underneath.

Wynd #1 didn’t feel complete to me. It felt like there should have been more, and maybe there was supposed to be. After all Wynd was supposed to be released in trade form but instead dropped as an original limited series. The first issue ends abruptly, and leaves you with more questions than a suspenseful cliffhanger.

Wynd #1 is definitely going places, I just wish I knew with who and where.

decorumDecorum #1 Review

Does Jonathan Hickman sleep? How does he find the time to write all of these deep books? His new X-Men book has taken the mutant team to a higher level of storytelling that we haven’t seen since Bendis (I’m partial to his series but there’s arguments for Morrison’s New X-Men or naturally Claremont’s). Now out of nowhere Decorum drops from Image Comics, something equally if not more impressive as his newest X-Men work.

decorumDecorum #1 takes place in a universe filled with everything from primitive tribes to cyborg explorers, governing bodies and alien mobs. It’s a galaxy where you pay the highest price for the best, whether it’s deliveries (Death Stranding?) or assassinations. Neither job is easy and in some cases, having good manners when you slay murderous thugs can make all the difference in the world.

Jonathan Hickman and Mike Huddleston have created a masterful universe. Crafted and written in the same manner as his X-Men with hints of one of my other favorite books from Rick Remender, Low. Every part of Decorum hits; the art, the action, the lore, the colors. It would be unfair to not mention the wondrous inks from who I’m unsure comes from Huddleston or designs of Sasha E Head. Every page is a splash of sci-fi brilliance, mixing a captivating narrative with gripping action.

Decorum #1 is an automatic indie hit, doing things you’ll see in no other books on the market right now. As a glowing beacon in the sci-fi genre, Decorum is a must read.

Join The Future #1 Review

The future is now and it’s brighter and better than ever. In megacity USA enjoy organic fruits and vegetables, health care, basic income, and sporting events, all free and at your fingertips. It’s the future and they want you to join.

In Join The Future the idea of a megacity and all of its accommodations sound enticing, but to some, the technology free past is the purer form of living. These ideals are diminishing however, but not for the reasons you might think. The old west holdouts aren’t giving in, they’re being punished by diminishing food stores and wildlife to hunt. There’s also wild conspiracies of mercenaries being hired to topple those few last remaining settlements.

But why? Why must the small town USA give in to the megacity. Who benefits? What’s the endgame? These are the questions that so enticed me about Join The Future #1. Zack Kaplan challenges the old west against the sleek and metallic future. He’s joined by Piotr Kowalski of Sex from Image Comics (he also did a few stories for The Witcher), giving the book an unforgiving hard look.

Join The Future isn’t the book that will put Aftershock Comics on the map but it is one of the better books from the publisher I’ve read. They’re definitely barking up the right tree. There’s something here, something might I say, in their future? I’ll see myself out.

Falcon & Winter Soldier CoverFalcon & Winter Soldier #1 Review

As the buzz about the Falcon and Winter Soldier TV series continue to fly around the interwebs since comic con, Marvel quietly released a 5 part mini series. So quietly in fact that Cosmic Comics! got about 40 issues they didn’t even order. So what do I get to do? Review it, that’s what.

Falcon & Winter soldier are the oil and water dynamic. Ebony and Ivory. Good cop, bad cop. Is it original? No. Does it work? In this case, yes.

Sam and Bucky’s worlds collide by the coincidence of mass murder, a short amount of detective work and literally one phone call. It’s quick and it gets right to the point. Here’s Bucky, he’s cool, shoots things, has a cool cat. Here’s Sam, not so cool, talks to birds, BAM! murder and a villain. It’s great!

Falcon & Winter Soldier ComicDerek Landy writes Falcon & Winter Soldier and is joined by pencils from Federico Vicentini. The quick moving book is accented by appropriate art from Vicentini. It’s definitely brutal enough for Bucky, introducing a new classy foe who goes by the name of The Natural. Think Robert Redford in The Natural but instead of swinging bats he swings fist. I’ve never seen The Natural but I’ve seen the cover art and a bat was definitely involved.

Falcon & Winter Soldier is great prep for the upcoming TV series. See these two in action in a book that’s actually very good. Getting a surprise book like this isn’t exactly like Christmas, it’s more like candy at Easter but that’s still not half bad.

Alienated #1 Review

Alienated #1 from BOOM! Studios is coming in hot right after highly acclaimed Once and Future and Something is Killing the Children. I’ve always found these indie reads refreshing, something Image has been doing for years while smaller publishers like BOOM! and Aftershock are really beginning to hit their stride.

In Alienated #1 we find the three Sams: Samuel, Samantha, and Samir. Although they’re labeled as outcasts in their small town, each of them want to be something more. Samuel is the new kid who’s aching to be “famous” while still remaining anonymous. Samantha just wants to start fresh. And Samir, who wants nothing more than to be accepted. Little do they know that they’ll soon be intimately entangled into each others lives by their discovery of an alien artifact.

Together they give the artifact life and the perils that come with it. What will they do with something so innocent yet so dangerous. Do they even have the power to control it? As if teen life wasn’t hard enough.

Simon Spurrier joins Chris Wildgoose in this very intriguing story. I was immediately drawn in by the art of Chris Wildgoose and sharp colors by Andre May. I just happened to stay around for the story, and I’m glad I did. Alienated #1 isn’t a coming of age story or kids finding an alien and phoning him home, no it’s three teens struggling to find their place in life when they soon get the pressures of powers to change the world stacked on them.

Alienated #1 is a smooth read that just flows. The script reads as I believe teens would talk and tackles the mentality of youth today. Or at least I think it does, I really have no frame of reference since I’m, ya’know, old. The point I’m trying to make is that Alienated succeeds without trying too hard and avoids the cliche pitfalls much of Hollywood does. I can definitely see this being adapted to television in the future so hop on this book early so you can say you read it before it was cool.

Star #1 Review

The Avengers films end with a snap of the fingers and the destruction of the infinity stones. Those pesky rocks have been reeking havoc all over the Marvel Universe for years. They always seem to be getting lost or falling into the wrong hands, and in some rare cases few people become hosts. Ripley Ryan is one of these people.

Who’s Ripley Ryan you ask? Well, if you haven’t been reading Captain Marvel then she’s a nobody. Hell, even if you’ve been reading Captain Marvel up until around issue #8 she was a nobody. That was however until she became the villain Star. Issues 8-12 of Captain Marvel became one helluva ark for the series propelling Star into her own self titled book.

I love when books like Star drop and make you scour through back issues looking for those “keys” you happened to miss. One of my favorites Cosmic Ghost Rider did that to me and thankfully led me down the Thanos story to end all stories. Now Marvels newest villain in Star is doing it too. It only took Captain Marvel punching a hole into her chest to make her interesting, that and hosting the reality stone. Did I mention she possibly hosts the reality stone or the essence of it? Sorry, maybe I missed that AWESOME piece of info.

Kelly Thompson who coincidentally captains the helm of Captain Marvel also writes Star. She’s joined by the amazing art of Javier Pina who did Captain America: Steve Rogers, Rise Of The Black Panther, and a popular issue of Mr and Mrs X. This makes for a book that produces quality well above its grade. The beautiful J. Scott Campbell covers flew off the shelves from Cosmic Comics! on day one so I was ecstatic when they got more issues in. Sure they weren’t the J. Scott Campbell covers but hey, a good story is a good story.

Star #1 from Kelly Thompson and Javier Pina exceeds all expectations. It’s a book that surprises and shines in all aspects. It comes from an interesting storyline in Captain Marvel and continues to power on with crazy action, humor, and thought provoking crisis. Ripley Ryan is a woman struggling to find herself in her new powers. Is she hero or foe?
