Paldor Peak is situated in the Ganesh Himal region, one of the most beautiful and less-travelled regions of Nepal, approximately north-northwest of Kathmandu. It stands at the southeastern end of the Ganesh Himal range and lies within the boundaries of Langtang National Park.
Paldor Peak is often considered a “trekking peak,” but it still provides a real alpine challenge:
- Use of crampons and ice axe
- Glacier travel and basic rope work.
- A summit push that feels like a true expedition day.
It is ideal for trekkers ready to step into mountaineering, or if you already have experience and prefer something quieter with fewer people around.
The journey starts with trekking through traditional villages, terraced farmland, and lush forests. This progression helps with acclimatisation before transitioning into a more rugged alpine environment as you approach base camp.
We will establish a high camp from which the summit can be reached in 7-8 hours under good conditions.
At just under 6000m, Paldor Peak offers spectacular panoramic views of surrounding peaks in the Ganesh Himal range, as well as glimpses toward Langtang Lirung and even parts of the Manaslu Himal on clear days, without the prolonged exposure to very high altitude.
Approach to Base Camp
The journey to Paldor Peak is as much a cultural and scenic experience as it is a climb. Starting with a drive to Gatlang via Syabrubesi, the trail quickly leaves the more frequented routes and enters a quieter, off-the-beaten region.
One of the key highlights is trekking through traditional Tamang villages such as Gatlang, where local culture, stone houses, and terraced fields offer a glimpse into rural Himalayan life.
As the trail progresses, the landscape gradually changes:
- Lower sections feature lush forests of rhododendron, oak, and fir
- Mid-sections open to alpine ridges with expansive mountain views
- Higher up, the terrain becomes rugged and glacial, with moraines and snowfields
Trekkers pass waterfalls, high ridgelines, and tranquil valleys before reaching Somdang, a key acclimatisation stop. From here, the route to base camp becomes more remote and less travelled, adding to the overall expedition feel.
Paldor Base Camp itself sits around 4300m – 4500m, surrounded by stark glacial landscapes and towering peaks, marking the transition from trekking to mountaineering terrain.
The Summit Approach
The climb of Paldor Peak is often described as a “perfect first Himalayan peak” for those with basic mountaineering skills. While not technical, it demands proper use of crampons, ropes, and ice axes.
Key climbing features include:
- Glacier travel: The route crosses crevassed glaciers, requiring careful route-finding and teamwork
- Snow and ice slopes: Gradients of 40–50 degrees in sections provide a sustained but manageable challenge
- Summit ridge: The final push involves a narrow snow ridge, often the most exposed and memorable section
- Early alpine start: Summit day typically begins before dawn

Standing at an elevation of 3726m, Mt Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia, second only to Mount Kerinci on Sumatra. While the journey to the summit is challenging, it promises breathtaking views from both the crater rim and the summit. The best time to trek Mt Rinjani is during the dry season, which typically runs from April to November.
The Summit Experience
The summit push on Mount Rinjani begins in the quiet hours before dawn. Setting off from the crater rim under a sky full of stars, trekkers make their way slowly up the steep volcanic slopes, guided by headlamps and the steady rhythm of each step.
The final ascent is both challenging and rewarding. The loose volcanic sand demands patience and persistence, but with every step upward, the horizon begins to glow with the first light of day. Update: Haba Snow Mountain has been closed since October 2025 for rectification works and is also closed during the winter season for safety reasons. As of March 2026, the Haba Snow Mountain Provincial Nature Reserve Administration and the Shangri-La Culture and Tourism Bureau have not announced a reopening date. In view of this uncertainty, we have decided to cancel the 2026 trip and hope to organise the trek again in 2027.
Following the strong interest and positive response to our past expeditions, we are pleased to return to Haba Snow Mountain for our 2026 early-summer climb. This journey offers trekkers another opportunity to experience one of Yunnan’s (China) most striking snow-covered peaks, set against the dramatic landscapes of Shangri-La and Tiger Leaping Gorge.
Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山), also known as Haba Xueshan, rises to 5396m and is located southeast of Shangri-La (香格里拉), directly opposite the famed Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山 / 5596m). Separated by the Jinsha River, these two mountains stand guard over the legendary Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡), one of the deepest gorges in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the Naxi language, “Haba” means golden flower, a name befitting its striking alpine presence.
Crowned with snow throughout the year, Haba Snow Mountain is regarded as one of the more accessible high-altitude snow peaks in China. While the climb is not technically demanding, prior snow and ice experience is helpful but not required; more important is having good endurance and overall fitness to tackle the ascent. The terrain is generally straightforward and free of crevasses, making it a suitable entry-level snow mountain for those looking to gain experience above 5000m.
The final ascent to the summit features the well-known “Hopeless Slope” (绝望坡) > a 950m snow slope that demands strong physical fitness, steady pacing, and mental resilience. Though challenging, this exposed section provides an excellent opportunity to practise crampon footwork and apply snow-travel techniques in a real alpine environment.
This 2026 expedition is great for trekkers looking to tackle their first snow-covered peak, or simply to gain experience and confidence for future snow or ice climbs.
