On May 9, 2019, The Two Hundred Club of Essex celebrated its 53rd  Anniversary…53 years of dedicated service to the dependents of police and Firefighters in Essex County and state troopers in New Jersey who lose their lives in the line of duty.  The Club celebrated this milestone at its Annual Valor Awards luncheon at Nanina’s In The Park in Belleville, NJ with an extensive program.

As you know, the purpose of this luncheon is, and has always been, to honor our police officers and Firefighters of Essex County, who demonstrate exceptional courage and fortitude while performing their duties throughout the year.

This year, we were grateful to acknowledge twenty individuals who exemplified outstanding on-the-job performances.

Our luncheon began with the Newark Firefighters Pipe Band leading in this year’s Valor Award recipients.  Lori A. Hennon-Bell, Vice President & Chief Security Officer/Global Security, Prudential Financial and President of the Two Hundred Club, gave a warm welcome and introduced Newark Police Detective Maysa Washington, who afforded the luncheon guests with a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.  Ms. Hennon-Bell continued her welcome message and inspired us with an encouraging overview of the Club’s achievements and its future goals.

As our program continued we were able to receive words from Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura, Honorary Trustee/Executive Committee Member of the Two Hundred Club, who saluted our finest and bravest.

Sheriff Fontoura proceeded to inform the audience that 2018 was another costly year in terms of lives lost by brave law enforcement officers and courageous firefighters.  Representing public safety departments across our nation, 134 law enforcement officers and 93 firefighters died in the line of duty.

Sheriff Fontoura went on to say that while Essex County was spared our New Jersey neighbors were not as fortunate.  On January 5, 2018, Lt. Christopher Robateau of the Jersey City Police Department, NJ was struck and killed by a vehicle while checking on the welfare of another driver who had been involved in an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike, near exit 14.  On April 22, 2018, Police Officer Tamby Yagan of the Paterson Police Department, NJ was killed in a vehicle crash.  He suffered fatal injuries when his patrol car collided with a parked vehicle.  On Nov. 26, 2018, cancer took the life of NJSP Trooper Robert Nagle.  Trp. Nagle acquired this illness during extended search and recovery operations follow the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11/01.  In 1983, Perth Amboy Firefighter Douglas Ambrozewycz suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns after falling through the floor at a residential fire.  Since then, the firefighter contacted Hepatitis C as a result of multiple blood transfusions.  He eventually succumbed on June 10, 2018.  Englishtown Chief Fire Engineer Pasquale DiBenedetto died of a stroke after returning home from a call for a faulty CO Detector at his firehouse on July 30, 2018.  On Nov. 21, 2018, Firefighter Michael Galay of Green Knoll Fire Rescue was found unresponsive in his bed after having returned from a commercial fire.  The exact nature and cause of death are still to be determined.  And, on Christmas Day 2018, Firefighter Natalie Dempsey of the Mizpah Volunteer Fire Department died in an automobile crash as she was responding to a residential fire.

Sheriff Fontoura asked the audience to take a look at the Honor Roll page in the luncheon program to see that in Essex County 87 brave police officers and courageous firefighters have made the supreme sacrifice on our behalf.  He said “these valiant officers and firefighters hold a special place in our hearts and in the hearts of the people they served.  We mourn their untimely deaths.”  Sheriff Fontoura then asked everyone to bow their heads and offer a moment of silent prayer as we reflect and remember all fallen police officers and firefighters.

The Two Hundred Club of Essex County was honored to have The Honorable Sheila Y. Oliver, Lieutenant Governor of the State of New Jersey, as its guest speaker.  In her keynote address, Lieutenant Governor Oliver said “Everybody is not built for what you do”.  Lieutenant Governor Oliver proceeded to reassure the officers and public safety personnel that they are needed stating that someone during their lifetime will need an emergency services technician, a firefighter or police officer.

Reverend Monsignor Christopher J. Hynes, Assistant to the Archbishop for Public Affairs, Archdiocese of Newark, graciously provided a warm and inspirational Benediction.

Sheriff Fontoura went on to say that while Essex County was spared our New Jersey neighbors were not as fortunate.  Chief Engineer Richard Zadorozny of the Eatontown Fire Department on July 11th; Safety Officer Paul Price of the Audobon Fire Department on August 11th; Chief Engineer Daniel McCann of the Manasquan Fire Department on September 16th; F/F Joseph Bichler of the Evesham Fire Department on October 31st; Deputy Fire Coordinator of the Union County Office of Emergency Management on December 16th all suffered work-related heart attacks.  Firefighter Alfred Stewart of the West Milford Fire Department was killed when he fell from a ladder at the station house while performing maintenance on November 6th and New Jersey State Police Trooper Frankie Williams was killed when his marked unit was struck head-on while responding to a call for service on December 5th.

The Two Hundred Club of Essex County was honored to have The Honorable Ras J. Baraka highlighted the dedication to duty, professionalism and bravery of police officers and firefighters who, during times of crisis and danger, sacrifice their personal safety on behalf of their neighbors.  He specifically cited the heroic actions performed by this year’s Valor Award recipients who at the risk of life and limb confronted armed suspects and entered into raging residential fires.

The Two Hundred Club of Essex County proudly presented its Meritorious Service Award to the Montclair Fire Department Group 3 and Deputy Essex County Fire Coordinator and Millburn Battalion Chief James Boyle for their outstanding group rescue on December 3, 2016, which saved the life of a man trapped underneath an oil tank.

On May 5, 2016, The Two Hundred Club of Essex celebrated its 50th Anniversary…50 years of dedicated service to the dependents of police and Firefighters in Essex County and state troopers in New Jersey who lose their lives in the line of duty.

This year, we were grateful to acknowledge twenty-nine individuals who exemplified outstanding on-the-job performances.

Sheriff Fontoura proceeded to inform the audience that 2015 was another costly year in terms of lives lost by brave law enforcement officers and courageous firefighters.  Representing public safety departments across our nation, 128 law enforcement officers and 87 firefighters died in the line of duty.

Sheriff Fontoura went on to say that while Essex County was spared our New Jersey neighbors were not as fortunate.  New Jersey State Police Trooper Anthon Raspa was on patrol on 1-95 on May 30, 2015 when his marked cruiser struck a deer, causing the vehicle to crash into a tree; Trooper Eli McCarson was responding to a domestic violence call on December 17th when he lost control of his cruiser during a heavy rainstorm and crashed into a utility pole; Trooper Sean Cullen had responded to a vehicle fire with injuries on I-295 on March 8, 2016 when he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.  Paramus Firefighter Sean Benson on September 23rd, South Amboy Fire Police Officer Ed “Bear” Celecki on October 14th and Keasby Fire Deputy Chief Tom Koralick on November 11th all suffered heart attacks immediately after responding to residential fires.

The Two Hundred Club of Essex County was honored to have John J. Miller, Deputy Commissioner for the NYPD’s Division of Intelligence and Counterterrorism as its guest speaker.  Dep. Comm. Miller addressed the role of First Responders being trained and equipped for domestic terrorist threats from ‘lone wolf’ attackers.  He also praised law enforcement officers and firefighters for their unique bravery in dealing with life-threatening incidents and during life-saving events.

The Two Hundred Club of Essex County presented its John P. McLaughlin Award for outstanding service and duty to Arthur S. Guida, former 200 Club President and former Director of External Affairs for PSE&G.

Mr. Guida served as President for the Two Hundred Club of Essex County for 10 years.  Where he expanded the Club’s Board of Trustees to better reflect the community it serves and spearheaded initiatives to increase scholarship stipends for the children of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.  Mr. Guida served The 200 Club of Essex County long and well with distinction and dedication.  The Two Hundred Club of Essex County was honored to present its John P. McLaughlin Award to Mr. Arthur S. Guida.

Reverend Monsignor Christopher J. Hynes, Assistant to the Archbishop for Public Affairs, Archdiocese of Newark, graciously provided a warm and inspirational Invocation and Benediction.

This year, we were grateful to acknowledge twenty-eight individuals who exemplified outstanding on-the-job performances.

Our luncheon began with the Newark Firefighters Pipe B and leading in this year’s Valor Award recipients. Arthur S. Guida, Director of External Affairs for PSE&G and President of the Two Hundred Club, gave a warm welcome and introduced Newark Police Officer Maysa Washington, who afforded the luncheon guests with a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Mr. Guida continued his welcome message and inspired us with an encouraging overview of the Club’s achievements and its future goals.

The Invocation, which was delivered by Reverend Joe A. Carter, Pastor, New Hope Baptist Church, was uplifting to all of us.

As our program continued we were able to receive words from Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura, Honorary Trustee of the Two Hundred Club, who saluted our finest and bravest.

Sheriff Fontoura proceeded to inform the audience tha t 2013 was another costly year in terms of lives lost by brave law enforcement officers and courageous firefighters. Representing public safety departments across our nation, 105 law enforcement officers and 101 firefighters died in 2013 while performing their duties and protecting those they had sworn to serve. Sheriff Fontoura went on to say that while Essex County was spared from this tragedy, other communities in New Jersey were not. We re membered Jersey City Captain Gregory Barnas who died in the line of duty in Wallington, NJ where he also served as a volunteer firefighter when a roof collapsed on February 28, 2014; and United States Army Sgt. Timothy McGill, also a member of the Ramsey Fire Department, who was killed in Afghanistan during an attack on his base on September 21, 2013.

Sheriff Fontoura reminded everyone that our good for tune in Essex County has not always been the case. He asked the audience to look at the back page of their program and see our Honor Roll with the names of all 86 of our police officers and firefighters who gave their all for us. Sheriff Fontoura said “All of these valiant officers and firefighters who were killed performing their duty in 2013 and those whose names grace our Honor Role hold a special place in our hearts and in the hearts of the people they served. We mourn their untimely deaths and we celebrate their heroic lives and the magnificent contributions to make our communities safer and more secure.” He then asked everyone to stand and offer a moment of silence prayer as we remember our fallen police officers and firefighters.

The Two Hundred Club of Essex County was honored to have New Jersey Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney as its guest speaker. During his remarks, Senate President Sweeney stressed the importance of determination in overcoming the challenges before you for the successful resolution to problems.

The Two Hundred Club of Essex County presented its John P. McLaughlin Award for service and duty posthumously to the late Newark Police Lieutenant Louis R. Dell’Ermo. Mr. Dell’Ermo served as Secretary for the 200 Club of Essex County for many years. The award was accepted by his sons, John and Gregory, and his widow, Vivian. As a successful businessman later in his life, Mr. Dell’Ermo worked tirelessly and selflessly to insure that the needs of the surviving partner and the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters were met.

The Two Hundred Club of Essex County proudly presented a Special Commendation Service Award to 35-year veteran Newark Firefighter Frank Bellina for his leadership and dedication in creating and providing specialized training to the Metro Urban Rescue and Search Strike Team which is composed of First Responders from Newark, Paterson, Bayonne, Hackensack, Morristown, Hoboken, Jersey City, Elizabeth, North Hudson, Middlesex County, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and several federal agencies.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was presented with a Special Unit Valor Award for the consistent excellence and outstanding success, especially for their round-the-clock efforts in making arrests of the suspects wanted for the December 15, 2013 carjacking/murder at the Short Hills Mall and for the suspects wanted in six Christmas Day homicides in Newark and Irvington.
