Scott Townsend visits Thessaloniki for the "Social Capital" exhibition

The Dukakis Center will host an exhibition of design work by Scott Townsend, Professor of Graphic Design at North Carolina State University, at the French Institute of Thessaloniki, Salle Allatini-Dasault, from June 21 till July 13, 2017, with the inauguration to take place on Tuesday, June 27, at 5 pm. The exhibition will coincide with an innovative summer service learning project pairing students from ACT, under the direction of Dr. Maria Patsarika, and from NC State, who are traveling in Greece with Professor Townsend.

The rationale behind the Center’s involvement in and sponsorship of these projects is three-fold.

First, Professor Townsend is one of a few colleagues from NC State with whom members of the ACT community have been interfacing, with a view toward forging long-term study abroad relationships with different departments at the University. An international service learning partnership looks to be in the offing as one of the tangible outcomes of the exhibition and service learning project. A virtual iteration of the collaboration is already scheduled to take place during the Fall 2017 semester at both institutions.

Second, both projects will enable the Dukakis Center to enhance its foothold in the field of community and urban policy. Professor Townsend’s work focuses on "creative community and social innovation through design," which falls clearly within the mandate of the Dukakis Center. The College of Design at NC State is similarly of interest to the Dukakis Center for its role in the North Carolina Innovation Center. Furthermore, community policy is one of the focus areas of the Dukakis Center at Northeastern University. These linkages will prove useful as the Dukakis Center collaborates in various Resilient cities projects underway at the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

Finally, the exhibition allows the Dukakis Center to broaden its local partnership in event management with the French Institute of Thessaloniki. The IFT, after its French acronym, is well known in Thessaloniki for its cultural programming. The IFT co-hosted a Dukakis Lecture with renowned French journalist Jean Quatremer in November 2015. Professor Townsend’s exhibition will be an attraction at three concerts scheduled to take place at the IFT, on June 21, 22, and 26. These concerts promise to attract large Francophone audiences which may not otherwise be acquainted with the activities of the Dukakis Center.
The exhibition and service learning project are the final Dukakis Center activities of the 2016-17 academic year.

Professor Effie Cochran awarded Greek Diaspora Fellowship to work with ACT

Effie Papatzikou Cochran, Professor in the English Department of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, was awarded a Niarchos Greek Diaspora Fellowship to travel to Greece and work with the American College of Thessaloniki's English Programs, training English faculty in enhancing student language skills through the application of "X-Word Grammar."

2nd Civic and Urban Culture Festival - Dukakis Center

During a ten-day period from April 11-20 the Michael and Kitty Dukakis Center for Public and Humanitarian Service at the American College of Thessaloniki will host its Second Festival of Civic and Urban Culture. The 2016 Festival will include, among others, a masterclass in stop-motion animation for young voters, the objective of which will be to have attendees produce short animated get-out-the vote campaigns; a masterclass in reporting and blogging; one or more public focus groups of non-voters (apohi); workshops on polling and in direct democracy; a graffiti paint-off; and a one-day conference, on April 18, on «Civic Engagement and the Practices of Democracy,» to co-hosted by the Public Opinion Research Unit, University Research Institute, University of Macedonia, who will conduct a national poll on voting behavior in Greece in 2015 at the behest of the Dukakis Center. The conference on will consist of a series of round table sessions featuring distinguished scholars and experienced practitioners to discuss problems and solutions in contemporary democratic governance, and to consider what is being done to encourage engagement, particularly among younger citizens, in municipalities, in schools, in civil society, and in the private sector.

The Dukakis Center organized its inaugural Festival of Civic and Urban Culture in the spring of 2014. First, the Center hosted an open debate, dubbed "Politics at the Coffeehouse,” on the May 2014 local and European elections. The debate, featuring prominent Greek journalists and bloggers, focused in large part on the incidence of unprecedented numbers of younger candidates in the elections, and was further animated by the presence of several local university students running for seats in the Municipal Council of Thessaloniki. The second event in the festival was an exhibition of photography by four Dukakis Center interns, who had attended a masterclass in environmental photography with renowned photographer Chryssa Nikoleri and were assigned to shadow candidates running in local and European elections. The exhibition took place at the Port Annex of the State Museum of Contemporary Art for three weeks during the month of June 2014. Finally, the Dukakis Center and Southeast European Studies at Oxford co-hosted the Fourth Dukakis International Symposium, with keynote speaker Dr. Erhard Busek and a group of distinguished panelists, who engaged in a public discussion on the theme of "The Future of Democracy in Europe and Beyond."

Συνολικά δεκατέσσερις (14) πλήρεις υποτροφίες για πτυχιακές και μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές προσφέρει για τη φετινή ακαδημαϊκή χρονιά το American College of Thessaloniki (ACT), μέλος του Κολλεγίου Ανατόλια. Διευρύνοντας το εκτεταμένο πρόγραμμα υποτροφιών του και στο πλαίσιο του μη κερδοσκοπικού του χαρακτήρα, το American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) χορηγεί υποτροφίες με κριτήριο τις ακαδημαϊκές επιδόσεις των υποψηφίων. Συγκεκριμένα: εννέα (9) υποτροφίες για το Πτυχιακό πρόγραμμα και πέντε (5) για το Μεταπτυχιακό Πρόγραμμα MBA του ACT. Οι πλήρεις υποτροφίες που θα προσφερθούν στο Πτυχιακό πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνουν τα παρακάτω αντικείμενα σπουδών: Διοίκηση Επιχειρήσεων (Business Administration), Εφαρμοσμένη Πληροφορική (Business & Computing), Αγγλική Φιλολογία (English: Language & Literature / Communication & New Media), Διεθνείς Σχέσεις (International Relations).
Οι συμμετέχοντες θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα να διεκδικήσουν τις υποτροφίες μετά από διαγωνισμό που θα διεξαχθεί στη Θεσσαλονίκη, τη Λάρισα, τον Βόλο, την Ξάνθη και την Κοζάνη, λαμβάνοντας μέρος σε ηλεκτρονική εξέταση γνώσεων και ικανοτήτων, πολλαπλής επιλογής, η οποία θα διαρκέσει 2 ώρες. Η εξέταση θα διεξαχθεί στα Ελληνικά και δεν χρειάζεται προετοιμασία.
Οι υποψήφιοι πρέπει να πληρούν τις κατωτέρω προϋποθέσεις:

Να είναι κάτοικοι Ελλάδας

Να είναι έως 26 ετών (Το όριο ηλικίας δεν ισχύει για τις εξετάσεις του MBA)

Να κατέχουν απολυτήριο Ενιαίου Λυκείου (για τις υποτροφίες των προπτυχιακών προγραμμάτων) και πτυχίο ΑΕΙ, ΤΕΙ ή και αναγνωρισμένου Κολλεγίου για την υποτροφία στο ΜΒΑ

Να έχουν αποδεδειγμένη γνώση της Αγγλικής γλώσσας
