Good evening Card Nation. Coach Jeff Brohm and the Cards look to right the ship against the Villanova Wildcats. Hopefully, this is a get right game for Isaac and Keyjuan Brown. Villanova is going to present a new set of challenges for the Cards defense. They tend to use a no-huddle offense, but they aren’t in any hurry at all. Louisville needs to stay focused, trust their eyes, and play with discipline.

1st Quarter:

Louisville appeared to headed for a 3-&-out, before a roughing the passer penalty prolonged the Cards drive. Louisville continued to run Isaac Brown, but elected to pass in the red zone. Lincoln Kienholz missed Jaleel Skinner twice on what would’ve been a touchdown if they connected on either pass attempt. Villanova methodically marched down the field, with their no-huddle offense (but they bled the clock under 8 every time before snapping the ball). An errant throw kept Villanova from taking a 7-3 lead as the Cards turned the receiver loose up the seam. Nova tied the game at 3 with a 35-yard kick. Kienholz and the offense only needed 4 plays to take the ball 72 yards and take a 10-3 lead, thanks to a 19-yard TD run by Kienholz. The Louisville defense forced a 3-&-out after Villanova punted on 4th-&-1. After 3 unsuccessful tries to get Skinner the ball, Coach Brohm dialed up the same play from a different formation and Skinner took the pass from Kienholz and went 69 yards for the score. The Cards took a 17-3 with less than a minute remaining in the quarter. Louisville led 17-3 heading into the 2nd quarter.  

2nd Quarter:

Villanova scored on 65-yard catch-and-run up the sideline on the first play of the quarter. Louisville’s lead stood at 17-10 just briefly. The quick strike offense of the Cards only needed two plays this time to go 80 yards in less than 80 seconds, thanks to a 61-yard Kienholz to McCoy special for a touchdown. The Cards went back up 2 touchdowns, 24-10. After the Cards forced a punt, a running into the punter call allowed Villanova a chance to pin the Cards even deeper in their own Terri. It was a sloppy quarter for Louisville with the penalties. A running in the kicker, illegal hands to the face, two unsportsmanlike penalties, and illegal formation were all in the quarter. Louisville needs to be more disciplined. A Kienholz keeper from 4 yards out, pushed the Louisville lead to 21 (31-10). Louisville led going into intermission.

3rd Quarter: 

Louisville’s defense came out and forced a quick 3-&-out, but the Cards offense didn’t capitalize and had to punt the ball right back to Villanova. On Louisville’s second drive, Braxton Jennings had a 15-yard touchdown run that capped it off. The score put the Cards up 38-10. Another penalty on 3rd down by the Louisville defense, This time it gave Villanova a first down. Villanova was able to get points out of it, and made a small dent in the Louisville lead at 38-13.  The Cards marched down the field and added another touchdown to their score. Louisville heads into the final quarter with a 45-13 lead.

4th Quarter:

The first play of the quarter resulted in the first sack of the game (and season). It was Tyler Thompson with the strip sack and it was recovered by the Cards. The book is closed on Lincoln Kienholz with 332 passing yards and 4 total touchdowns (2 passing, 2 running). Braxton Jennings caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Devin Wydner to put the Cards up 52-13. The Louisville defense continued to work on tightening their pass defense and clogging up running lanes, as they forced another punt from Villanova. Wydner remained the quarterback and maneuvered the Cards down the field. This drive was capped by Davis finding his way into the end zone for the second time. The Cards lead the Wildcats 59-13. Briggs Cherry entered the game and he connects with fellow freshman and Louisville native Marlon Harbin for his first completion at Louisville. The Cards get in the win column with a 59-13 victory over Villanova.

Post Game Notes: 

The Cards improve to 1-1. Lincoln Kienholz is the only Louisville player to have over 300 yards in his first two starts in a Louisville uniform. The offensive line looked good in pass protection. However, Isaac Brown is still struggling to find the holes created by this offensive line to make the big plays we’ve become accustomed to seeing him make. That needs to get fixed before SMU comes in the building next Saturday. The receivers are as good as advertised, even down to the local freshman Marlon Harbin. Tre Richardson was 2 yards from joining Lawayne McCoy with 100 yards receiving. The defense finally got a sack. It took the 7 quarters, but Villanova did a lot of screens, misdirections, and other designed play calls to get Louisville’s defense thinking and reacting instead of just playing. The penalties have to stop, especially the easy lay up penalties. They are eventually going to hurt us again if we don’t tighten up that issue. Next up for Louisville is the clash with ACC foe, SMU. The game will be at L&N at 3:30 pm.

The helmet is their white helmet with a red face mask. They have Cards in script writing on the sides and a stripe down the middle of the helmet. However, what makes these special is that the script and the stripe are colored by Old Glory, the American flag.

The rest of the uniform is the standard red jersey with white letters and numerals outlined in black. The shoulders have the big white stripe with alternating smaller red and black stripes. They didn’t release a picture of the pants, but it’s safe to assume they’ll wear white pants with black, red, and white striping. Cleats could be either red or white. Since they’re wearing white gloves, it’s likely an indication their pants will also be white.

Per University of Louisville Sports Release:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men’s basketball 2026-27 conference schedule is now available following the release of the Atlantic Coast Conference slate on Wednesday afternoon.

Television and tip times have yet to be announced. Games listed as Tuesday or Wednesday may be moved to the opposite day once television selections have been made. The final schedule with times and television assignments will be announced in the coming weeks. 

Louisville is slated for nine home ACC contests with four played in January, four in February and the regular season finale on Saturday, March 6.

UofL is 282-205 all-time against current ACC membership with a record of .500 or better against 14 of the 17 other programs.

The Cardinals open ACC play on the road against Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Louisville will then ring in the new year at home on Saturday, Jan. 2 with a game against Stanford before hosting North Carolina for a midweek game on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Louisville will go back out on the road against home-and-away partner SMU on Saturday, Jan. 9. UofL faces California in the KFC Yum! Center on Wednesday, Jan. 13 before traveling to Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 16.

The Cards host the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday, Jan. 19 before playing three games away from The Ville. Louisville takes a break in conference action to play Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 23 in Indianapolis, Ind., before going to Boston College on Jan. 27 and to Georgia Tech on Jan. 30.

Louisville is slated for three of four games at home to start the month of February. The Cardinals host the Pittsburgh Panthers on Tuesday, Feb. 2 and the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest on Saturday, Feb. 6.

UofL plays its first of two Big Monday games at North Carolina on Feb. 8 before coming back to the KFC Yum! Center for the return game against SMU on Saturday, Feb. 13.

The Cards travel to Charlottesville, Va., to take on the Hoos for their second Big Monday matchup on Feb. 15.

Louisville goes to Florida State for a rare ACC Sunday game on Feb. 21 after a year-long break from playing the Seminoles. The Cardinals then return home for a midweek matchup against Duke on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

To wrap up the regular season, UofL plays at NC State on Tuesday, March 2 before the conference finale against Clemson at home on Saturday, March 6.

The ACC Tournament returns to its roots in Greensboro, N.C., the week of March 9. The top 15 teams in the 18-team league will earn a spot in the tournament.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 6-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team swept No. 9 Texas (25-12, 28-26, 25-16) on Sunday afternoon at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

The victory marks Louisville’s (5-1) fourth straight sweep, as the Cardinals have now defeated four ranked teams, including two top-10 opponents, through the first six matches of the season.

“Card Nation really showed out,” said Dan & Maria Durbin Head Volleyball Coach Dan Meske. “There was a lot of red in here. I know we’ve got the football game [vs. Ole Miss] later today, but that was a really cool neutral match that felt like a home match, so huge credit to everyone from Louisville that made the trip down.”

“It was a great match against a storied program with a ton of talent,” added Meske. “They have some bombers, and it was hard to weather the storm at times, but I just thought our team was really resilient. Good defensive gameplan by [Assistant Coach] Parker Mikesch, and [our players] executed it really, really well. We weathered the storm in the second set – it could’ve gone either way – and I thought our team showed a bunch of poise. I’m just really proud of the group, it’s a great team win.”

A trio of Cardinals recorded double-digit kills with outside hitter Chloe Meester leading the charge once again, as the sophomore racked up 13 kills on a .565 hitting percentage. After redshirting her freshman year in 2025, Meester has now notched at least 10 kills in five of the first six matches of her collegiate career.

Outside hitter Chloe Chicoine notched 12 kills and opposite Kalyssa Blackshear recorded 10, as the pair also both hit over .300. Blackshear also chipped in a season-high six blocks, while libero Payton Petersen led the Louisville defense with 16 digs. 

Louisville finished the match with a team hitting percentage of .350, their fourth straight match hitting over .300, to continue their hot stretch offensively. The Cards excelled on the defensive end of the floor as well, holding Texas (3-3) to a .174 clip while tallying 50 digs and recording nine team blocks.

The 2026 season kicked off in Nashville vs 9th ranked, Ole Miss. I must say, I’m very impressed with the attendance. I thought it would be like a bowl game attendance somewhere in the neighborhood of 24-28,000 people. When I walked out onto the field and saw how full the stadium was on both sides, I was amazed. Over 57,000 fans. Both teams traveled very well and the red really stood out. Much Love, Card fans!

As for the game, first half was boring an uneventful. Like 2 prize fighters feeling each other out, looking for a spot to take their shot. The 2nd half was all fireworks. My only complaint is the self inflicted penalties and mistakes. But those can be cleaned up and once they are, we have something special here.

The future looks really bright…..Go Cards!

Good evening Card Nation. It’s finally Game Day!!! Coach Brohm kicks off his fourth season as head football coach of the University Of Louisville, with a Sunday night primetime game vs the top 10 ranked Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss has a new coach leading a team that won 13 games and lost to the Miami Hurricanes in the CFP semi-finals. Can Louisville contain QB Trinidad Chambliss and RB Kewan Lacy all game, or will they focus on slowing down the running game of Chambliss and Lacy and force Chambliss into making a couple of uncanny mistakes? Louisville’s defense is good and tonight is going to be a great test as to how good they are. 

1st Quarter:

Coach Brohm elected to defer to the second half. An Ole Miss miscue resulted in a loss of 21 yards and later forced them to punt on their first possession. Louisville had some moderate success in the run game, enough to allow a big play action pass to TE Jaleel Skinner. Unfortunately, two delay of game penalties forced Louisville to kick a 25-yard field goal. Louisville took a 3-0 lead. On the Rebels next possession, they went for it on 4th-&-2 and got the first down, but Clev Lubin punched the ball out and forced a turnover for the Cards.  Louisville wasn’t able to capitalize and add to their lead, and had to punt the ball away. Louisville led 3-0 heading into the 2nd quarter.  

2nd Quarter:

Louisville made a big 3rd down stop to force Ole Miss to kick a 43-yard field goal. They made it and tied the game at 3 early in the quarter. Lincoln Kienholz overthrew a wide open Tre Richardson that would’ve resulted in a touchdown on their next drive. On 4th down, the Cards snapped the ball over the punter, giving Ole Miss the ball on the 12-yard line. Ole Miss needed 4 plays to take it 12 yards to take a 10-3 lead. The Louisville offense continued to struggle, as they continued to rack up negative yards. Ole Miss got the ball with the opportunity to put the game out of reach. A Stanquan Clark interception put an end to that threat. Unfortunately, Louisville struggled to move the ball yet again and had to punt on 4th-&-11. Louisville’s defense has been impressive this half. They held Ole Miss to  another field goal attempt, this time Ole Miss missed. Louisville offense started to show some signs of life with the two minute offense, as the Cards we able to get close enough for Carson Hilbert to kick in a 46-yard field goal, and cut the Ole Miss lead to 4 (6-10). Cards trailed 6-10 heading into intermission.

3rd Quarter: 

Louisville came out and decided to put a new emphasis on running the football. They just changed the way they ran the football. A misdirection jet sweep play led to a Tre Richardson 30-yard touchdown run, and gave the Cards a brief 13-10 lead. Ole Miss came right back with a 62-yard touchdown pass to give Ole Miss back the lead at 17-13. Louisville, and Lincoln Kienholz started to find their footing in Nashville, as they moved the ball, but had to settle for yet another field goal, this time from 45-yards out. On the next possession, Chambliss and Alexander connected on yet another 62-yard touchdown to extend their lead to 24-16. Kienholz answered with a 62-yard touchdown pass of his own to Tre Richardson. Louisville tied the game at 24 with a successful 2-point conversion. The Cards and Rebels headed into the 4th quarter tied at 24.

4th Quarter:

Ole Miss regained the lead on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Odom. The Rebels took advantage of Louisville in the Cover 3 again. Louisville miscues continue to haunt them as they have to punt the ball back to Ole Miss. Louisville appeared to have made a huge stop to get the ball back, but a horrible roughing the kicker call helped aide in the continuation of the Ole Miss  scoring drive, as Chambliss scored from 5 yards out to extend the Rebels lead to 38-24. Give Louisville some credit as they kept fighting, and Kienholz found LaWayne McCoy for a 54-yard TD, cutting into the Rebels lead 31-38. The defense made a big stop and got the ball back for their offense. Kienholz and the Cardinal offense moved the ball down the field, and Kienholz used his legs on a 7-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 38 with under 2 minutes remaining. On Ole Miss’s final drive of the game they made key plays when they needed to and won the game on a 48-yard field goal as time expired. Louisville starts the season off 0-1, but learned a lot about their defense and their new signal caller.

Final Stats:

Passing Yards: 307 (2 TDs)

Post Game Notes: 

The Cards fall in their season opener to the better, more experienced team today. The early miscues on offense, wasting timeouts, & delay of game penalties must be cleaned up before SMU comes to town in week 3. The offensive line struggled all night to open up any holes consistently for Isaac and Keyjuan. They did however show their ability to pass block consistently. Once Lincoln settled into the game, we saw why he was highly ranked coming out of high school. Coach Brohm, definitely has some weapons on the outside and the tight end group is going to make some huge plays this season. What can I say about the defense? For the first half, they looked like a TOP 15 defense, but its down right impossible to keep this Ole Miss offense in check for the entire game, especially when your back up 4th string corner is defending the best and fastest receiver on the other team. Ole Miss exploited that matchup and abused the cover 3 zone. They were well prepared to see cover 3.

Last Time These Two Met:

This will be the first ever meeting between Louisville and Villanova in football.

Notable Numbers:

• This will be the fourth consecutive season that Louisville has had a home opener against an FCS opponent.
• Louisville has not lost to an FCS team since 1987. Under Jeff Brohm, Louisville has won all three of its games against FCS opponents by an average score of 56.3 – 5.7.
• Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz became the first Louisville player to throw for over 300 yards in their debut. The junior completed 18-of-29 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns, adding 69 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

First Down: Meet the 2026 Villanova Wildcats

One of the better programs at the FCS level, Villanova is coming off a deep run in the FCS Playoff, losing to Illinois State in the semifinals last year. Head coach Mark Ferrante enters his tenth season with Villanova, and has coached the Wildcats to a top ten ranking in the final poll in four of the last five seasons. Villanova was tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League, which the football program joined this past July.

Villanova enters this week with a 1-1 record. They lost to William & Mary in week one, after giving up 13 points in the final minute to lose 35-32. But, Villanova is coming off a 17-16 win over Bucknell last weekend.

Second Down: Villanova Wildcats Offense

Offensive coordinator Chris Boden has been a long time staple on Villanova’s staff, entering his eighth season with the Wildcats.

Ferrante and Boden have a solid amount of returning starters from last year’s group on offense, including quarterback Pat McQuaide, who was granted eligibility after a long legal battle this offseason. McQuaide was efficient last season, with 28 total touchdowns (25 passing & three rushing) and had just four interceptions. He’s a long time veteran at the FCS level (had previous experience at Nicholls prior to arriving at Villanova) and is able to distribute the ball around to his receivers. But, he had a three-interception outing in the opener versus William & Mary.

Also returning are running backs Isaiah Ragland and Ja’briel Mace, and both are keys to the offense. They both show a quick burst at the first level and can bounce runs outside for 10-15 yards. Mace was an All-American last season as a returner, scoring two kick return touchdowns (he also led the team in rushing with 946 yards, 11 touchdowns, and averaged 7.4 yards per carry). Ragland had 755 yards and two touchdowns last year; Mace and Ragland often split carries at almost a 50/50 rate. Villanova also has a veteran offensive line that could be one of the best at the FCS level, including returning starters Quin Whalen (12 career starts), Kyle Fay (27 career starts), and Chris McCullers (30 career starts; preseason All-Patriot League First Team nominee).

So far, Villanova has been able to move the ball around at almost an even rate between their top three receivers. Jake Hilton had a 73-yard reception against William & Mary, part of his 4/132 outing against the Tribe. Braden Reed (eight receptions, 93 yards, two TDs) is Villanova’s top returning receiver from last year (34 receptions, 518 yards, two TDs last season); he is a capable punt returner and can make plays in space. Brandon Binkowski (seven receptions, 127 yards, TD) steps into a bigger role after logging just 11 catches last year, including a highlight reel touchdown catch against Penn State last season.

Players to Watch:

• QB Pat McQuaide (30/50, 488 yards, three TDs and INTs)
• RB Isaiah Ragland (27 carries, 136 yards, two TDs)
• RB Ja’briel Mace (24 carries, 129 yards, TD)

Third Down: Villanova Wildcats Defense

Defensive coordinator Ross Pennypacker has also been a long time staple at Villanova, coaching at the university for over a decade. Louisville should see a different front with Villanova’s 3-3-5 scheme that will blitz a ton and present different looks on almost every snap.

The Wildcats had to replace a ton of personnel from last year’s group that was among the best at the FCS level last season, including 17th in scoring defense and led the CAA in forced turnovers. So far, linebacker Omari Bursey has been a big time playmaker; he already has 4.5 tackles for loss (including four in the season opener against William & Mary) and has been everywhere on the field.

Defensive lineman Capri Martin also returns, after having 7.5 TFLs and 3.5 sacks last season; he was also nominated as a preseason All-Patriot League First Team player, alongside Bursey. Ratu Delano Navoti had two sacks against William & Mary, with Garrett Logan (14 tackles) logging a TFL in each of the first two games.

In Villanova’s first two games, though, big plays allowed by the secondary have been a glaring issue. William & Mary had multiple touchdown passes of 35+ yards and averaged 7.7 yards per attempt (their starting quarterback, Winston Watkins, also had 72 rushing yards), with Bucknell just having 245 passing yards and two touchdowns (zero INTs) last week.

Players to Watch:

• LB Omari Bursey (29 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, sack)
• DL Capri Martin (four tackles, 1.5 TFLs)

Fourth Down: Keys to the Game

How will Louisville shore up the pre-snap communication?

One of the biggest concerns from Sunday’s thriller against Ole Miss was how much Louisville struggled with getting the plays in. Louisville had to burn four timeouts as a result of being unable to run the play in time — including all three in the second half. That also includes two delay of game penalties on their opening drive, which led to the Cardinals settling for a field goal.

The Cardinals were able to overcome that to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but ultimately, Louisville’s unforced errors led to a loss against the Rebels. With the Cardinals facing an FCS opponent before their biggest conference game of the season against SMU next week, look for Louisville to improve their pre-snap communication and avoid having to take unforced timeouts or penalties on offense.

How does Lincoln Kienholz build on the momentum from last week?

After a tough first half, quarterback Lincoln Kienholz put together a scintillating second half that might be one of the best performances by a Louisville player in the last decade. He completed 11-of-15 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns, and added nine carries for 52 yards with a score on the ground.

It’ll be tough for Kienholz to have a better outing this season than the one on Sunday, but what can happen is that Kienholz — and the offense — can start faster. If Louisville can set the tone early with their offensive line, Kienholz could have a chance for another big day with his arm and his mobility. Villanova has struggled so far with their pass coverage in the secondary, and with William & Mary’s quarterback having 72 rushing yards on the ground, Kienholz will have opportunities to have a big day.

Can Louisville’s defensive line set the tone early?

Louisville’s defense only had one TFL last week versus Ole Miss, but they did two things well in last week’s loss. They forced turnovers on a quarterback who only had three all of last year, and they kept a high-powered Ole Miss rushing attack from setting the tone. The Cardinals held the Rebels to 152 rushing yards on 3.7 yards per carry, and Ole Miss did not have a run over 17 yards.

Despite Ole Miss being able to push the ball downfield against Louisville’s secondary, it’s not an indictment of the defense after week one. Ole Miss has one of the best offenses in the country, and Chambliss could end up being a Heisman finalist once December rolls around.

Against Villanova, though, Louisville has opportunities to showcase their talent on the defensive line. When Villanova traveled to face Penn State last year, the Nittany Lions were able to log three sacks, 11 TFLs, and held the Wildcats to 179 total yards. Against a less mobile quarterback, Louisville could have opportunities to bring pressure and force Villanova into second-and-long, third-and-long situations that will end drives quickly.

OFFENSE

Coach Brohm will go into this game breaking in his fourth consecutive signal caller in Lincoln Kienholz. When Coach Brohm identified and chose Kienholz out of the portal, he went in a completely different direction than his last 3 years and 3 starters. Plummer, Shough, and Moss were all 5th year quarterbacks with a ton of playing experience. Kienholz, although extremely talented, doesn’t have that. What Kienholz does have, is the ability to make plays with his legs and bring some uncertainty to opposing defensive coordinators because he hasn’t played a lot. Make no mistake about it, Lincoln is a talented signal caller and can make every throw on the field, and if Coach Brohm trust him, he’s the guy for this team.

Coach Brohm and staff completely rebuilt the offensive line, and they needed to. Going into the offseason this group had the biggest question mark, and rightfully so. EVERYTHING starts up front. Coach Brohm went into the portal, and grabbed Evan Wibberley, Johnnie Brown III, Eryx Daughtery, Cason Henry and Anwar O’Neil. Offensive line,..secured. The only questions are, how will they mesh, and how quickly can they get on the same page.

Coach Brohm didn’t mess around when it came to getting his new signal caller some targets. Lawayne McCoy transferred in from FSU. As a sophomore, McCoy tallied 396 receiving yards, and 3 touchdowns on 27 receptions. McCoy was a 4-Star prospect coming out of high school who thrived on both ends of the field. Brody Foley, the transfer from Tulsa, was one of the best tight ends in the portal. Brody finished the season with 9 total touchdowns (7 receiving, 2 rushing) and 528 receiving yards. The 6’6 tight end will be a mismatch when he lines up on the outside in the redzone. Coach Brohm didn’t stop at 1 tight end, he also brought in 6’5 Justyn Reid from Tulane. The biggest get at wide receiver was Tre Richardson. The Vanderbilt transfer is clearly going to be the number 1 option for Lincoln. Tre torched the SEC and most notably uk en route to a 7-touchdown year with 806 receiving yards. The dynamic playmaker just needs the ball in his hand and he’ll make things happen. Wide receiver TreShun Hurry and tight end Jaleel Skinner both return for Louisville and are expected to take on bigger roles this year.

We all know the unofficial Law Firm of Brown & Brown. Marquise Davis comes over from Missouri after his freshman year. We’re all familiar to Braxton Jennings after the show he put on in the Governor’s Cup last year in L & N Stadium. Incoming freshman Lekhy Thompkins will definitely get his fair share of reps to showcase his skills this year. The running back room is not only deep but extremely versatile. Finding a 3rd option behind Brown & Brown is going to be a challenge, but a challenge every coach would love to have. Keep in mind, Isaac Brown wasn’t the starting back going into his freshman season, but he was a player Coach Brohm wanted to get the ball to a few times a game.

DEFENSE

The Cards are really, and I mean really, good. They have length, size, height, and athletism at every level of the defense. They also have a mix of experienced system players (Lubin, Green, Clark, Holloway, Harris, & Watts) to go along with the talented incoming players (Thompson, Kennedy, Waller Jr, Banks, Wilson, & Entringer). Ron English is no longer calling the plays or on staff. Coach Mark Ivey and Coach Steve Ellis are your co-defensive coordinators. So the defense will hear a familiar voice.

The lone question for the Cards on defense is the depth on the defensive line. Louisville retained AJ Green and Clev Lubin. It feels funny to say a college team retains a player, but that’s the transfer portal world we’re living in. Demeco Kennedy (Purdue), Joshua Donald, Daylen Russell (Miami), Jerod Smith II, and Tyler Thompson (UNC) all joined through the portal. Thompson (7 sacks), Lubin (8.5) and Green (4) are going to create chaos in the backfield in passing situations. Lubin and Thompson are going to demand double teams. The problem is, you can’t double team that at the same time and leave Green one-on-one on the other side or on the interior.

Having a healthy Stanquan Clark is going to be huge for the Cards. Clark was looking every bit of a player who will play on Sundays before an injury sidelined him. Clark’s fellow Floridian TJ Capers is also back for the Cards and looking to improve on his stat line and impact from last season. A new, but old face has returned home in Ben Perry. Antonio Watts is back after having a great year for Louisville with 42 tackles, 2 sacks, and 3 INTs last yeaar. Perry had a couple good years at Louisville before he transferred for one year and came back home. Trent Carter, transfer Jacob Smith, and Cam White will provide valuable depth at the linebacker position. If we do use a spy on Trinidad, I fully expect Clark or Watts to have that responsibility.

I’m extremely excited about the secondary for Louisville. The secondary is almost entirely new. Antonio Harris is in his 2nd year after playing sparingly last year. He’s shown that he has all the tools to play at this level and the next. Tayon Holloway is also back and having him improve on his man-to-man skills is going to allow to shutdown most receivers. Tayon is already an exceptional zone defender, as he totaled 2 INTs last year. Incoming corner DJ Waller was a huge pick up out of the portal. I perfer him as a safety, but at 6’3 with long arms and great closing speed he’ll be a good corner. Perhaps the reasons Waller isnt playing safety at UofL is because of the additions of Iowa safety Koen Entringer, Ole Miss saftey TJ Banks, and Tennesse safety Kaleb Beasley all joined the Cards out of the portal.

EXTRA EXTRA

Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown were left off the Doak Walker Award Watch list is a bad look for not only the watch list committee, but for the ACC as well. Isaac Brown is considered one of the best backs in the country, when healthy. Keyjuan Brown, as a backup had more success than a lot of featured tailbacks last year. 

So can someone, anyone explain to CardNation why both Browns were left off this list? 

It’s a bad look for the ACC, because the entire ACC knows how great Brown & Brown are. In fact, they are at the top of every team’s defensive scouting report. Teams repeatedly stacked the box to attempt to slow down the Louisville running game. Expect Ole Miss to do the same, and expect Coach Brohm to counter with a play-action pass to the tight end or deep down the field. 

I’m OKAY, with both Browns being left off the list, because it will only add more fuel to the fire of these competitors to prove why they shouldn’t be overlooked. Which spells bad news for the rest of the ACC. A motivated Isaac & Keyjuan Brown will terrorize the ACC.

This is a defense that has the talent to be a TOP 15 defense. The question is…will the playcalling and scheme allow these players to play fast and free?

Will Coach Brohm have a 3,000 yard passer, 1,000 yards receiver, and 1,000 rusher again? The talent and scheme is definitely there.

In year 4, is this the year Louisville makes it back to the ACC title game? Does Louisville finally make the CFB Playoff? All these questions and more will start to be answered starting tonight in Primetime!!!

Last Time These Two Met:

Ole Miss and Louisville have only met one time previously, coming in the season opener in 2021. The Rebels jumped to an early 26-0 halftime lead, and never looked back as they defeated the Cardinals 43-24. Matt Corral led the Rebels with 381 passing yards and a touchdown, with Ole Miss piling up 569 total yards and forcing two turnovers.

Notable Numbers:

• Louisville has won all four games it has played in Nissan Stadium. The Cardinals won a neutral site game against Middle Tennessee State in 2006, defeated Western Kentucky in 2019, and won two Music City Bowl games against Texas A&M (2015) and Ole Miss’ bitter rival, Mississippi State (2019).
• Jeff Brohm is 4-4 against AP Top 25 opponents entering his fourth season at Louisville.
• Isaac and Keyjuan Brown both return to form one of college football’s best tandems at running back. Isaac Brown rushed for 884 yards and seven touchdowns with 8.8 yards per carry last season, while Keyjuan Brown had 704 yards and six touchdowns on 7.3 yards per carry.

First Down: Meet the 2026 Ole Miss Rebels

The Ole Miss Rebels enter 2026 fresh off a deep run in the College Football Playoff last year, narrowly coming up short against Miami (FL) in the semifinals. This run happened, in spite of head coach Lane Kiffin having a dramatic — and controversial — exit to take the head coaching job at LSU.

Pete Golding, who was Kiffin’s defensive coordinator, stayed on and was named head coach of the Rebels after Kiffin’s departure. Golding now enters his first full season as a head coach at the collegiate level, looking to take the Rebels back to the College Football Playoff and giving them their first SEC title since 1963.

Second Down: The Ole Miss Offense

When Kiffin departed for LSU, Ole Miss wasted no time with hiring East Carolina’s John David Baker as the new offensive coordinator for their CFP run. Baker led the Pirates offense to a top-20 FBS ranking in total offense last season. After a CFP run that saw the Rebels average 37 points and 456 yards per game in three games (Tulane, Georgia, and Miami), Baker was retained as the permanent OC.

Baker does have continuity on the roster, and it starts with their dynamic backfield, which has a very good argument for being the best in college football this season. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss returns after emerging as one of college football’s most fascinating storylines last season. He transferred to Ole Miss after winning a national championship at Division II Ferris State in 2024, was named the starter after Austin Simmons was sidelined with an injury, and never looked back. Chambliss completed 66% of his passes and had just three interceptions last season, while scoring 30 total touchdowns.

With Chambliss, Ole Miss has a quarterback that can sling passes with high velocity. Chambliss is a dual-threat guy that can buy time to deliver on-point throws, and while he hasn’t had a lot of chances to go on designed runs, he has the ability to do so.

Completing the other half of the Ole Miss backfield is running back Kewan Lacy, fresh off a record-breaking season for the Rebels. Lacy is a tough, durable runner that can fight through contact and wear defenses out down the stretch. Between Lacy and Chambliss, Ole Miss has plenty of options with their run game, and it’ll make play action / RPO’s tough to defend.

The Rebels head into 2026 needing to replace their top two wide receivers from last year (Harrison Wallace and De’Zhaun Stribling), as well as tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who rejoined Kiffin at LSU after having a brief foray in training camp with the Cleveland Browns. Deuce Alexander does return, he averaged 15.6 yards per catch last year and should be a deep play option for Baker and Chambliss. Former five-star recruit Caleb Cunningham could be due for a bigger role after playing in only three games last season; he’s a dynamic athlete that can high point the ball and create issues with his route-running. If he can emerge as a breakout talent in 2026, Ole Miss has a tremendous chance to win the SEC with their offense.

Transfers Johntay Cook II and Darrell Gill arrive after being Syracuse’s top two receivers from last year; Gill led the Orange in receiving touchdowns last year (five) in spite of a Syracuse passing game that struggled immensely after starter Steve Angeli suffered a season-ending injury, and has averaged 16.2 yards per catch in his collegiate career. Horatio Fields (Wake Forest) and Isaiah Spencer (Virginia Tech) are among other notable transfers that will bolster depth at wide receiver. Look for returnee Caleb Odom (19 rec., 197 yards, two TDs) to man the tight end spot.

Players to Watch:

• QB Trinidad Chambliss (66% completion, 3,937 passing yards, 30 total TDs & three INTs)
• RB Kewan Lacy (1,567 rushing yards, 24 TDs)
• WR Deuce Alexander (44 receptions, 684 yards, two TDs)

Third Down: The Ole Miss Defense

A familiar face will be on the Ole Miss sideline, as Bryan Brown — Louisville’s defensive coordinator during the Scott Satterfield era (2019-22) — was hired as defensive coordinator in the offseason.

Like his offensive counterpart in Baker, Brown’s defense will be led by two players that may be the best in the SEC at their respective positions; defensive tackle Will Echoles, and linebacker Suntarine Perkins.

Echoles headlines an Ole Miss defensive line that is loaded with talent. He is a tank at 6’3″ and 310 lbs., stuffs runs at a high level, and had five batted passes last year. He’s likely going to be a day two or even a first round draft pick next spring, and will be key towards containing Louisville’s high-powered rushing attack. Kam Franklin (69 tackles, nine TFLs, five sacks) also returns and should be the key pass rusher for Ole Miss this season. Transfers Jehiem Oates (Colorado) and Michai Boireau (Florida) have tremendous size at defensive tackle, with both guys pushing 335+ pounds.

Suntarine Perkins returns as one of the best linebackers in college football, and he can do essentially everything in Ole Miss’s defense. He can rush the passer and drop back in coverage at plus level, he will be everywhere and make plays.

Ole Miss added two stout linebackers in the portal with Keaton Thomas (Baylor) and Luke Ferrelli (California). Thomas earned All-Big XII Second Team honors in 2025, leading the Bears with 105 tackles and seven TFLs. He has NFL size at 240 lbs. and is another well-rounded player. Luke Ferrelli arrives at Ole Miss after a very brief stay at Clemson (and subsequent tampering accusations from Dabo Swinney), adding another playmaker at linebacker. Between Perkins, Thomas, and Ferrelli, Ole Miss could have one of the best linebacker groups in college football this season.

In the secondary, Ole Miss has multiple players returning, including Antonio Kite at cornerback (34 tackles, five PBUs) and Jaylon Braxton (24 tackles, INT). Jalyn Crawford (15 tackles, INT) arrives after making 18 career starts at Auburn in the last two seasons. Three transfers — Joenel Aguero (Georgia), Sharif Denson (Florida), and Edwin Joseph (Florida State) — arrive to form a likely three-man tandem at safety.

Players to Watch:

• DT Will Echoles (11.5 TFLs, five sacks, five PBUs)
• LB Suntarine Perkins (81 tackles, 12.5 TFLs, three forced fumbles, six PBUs, four sacks)
• LB Keaton Thomas (105 tackles, seven TFLs, INT)

Fourth Down: Keys to the Game

• Can Louisville establish the run game early and often?

It’s no secret that Louisville’s running back group is among the best in college football this season. But it’s also no secret that the linebacker group at Ole Miss is among the best in the sport; add in Ole Miss’s defensive line, and it will be a strength v. strength matchup that many NFL scouts will be watching on Sunday.

With Anwar O’Neal likely due to miss the season opener, Lance Robinson moves over to left tackle, with Evan Wibberley likely starting at center. Louisville may have to establish the run early and often to give themselves the best chance at pulling off the win, but it will be a tough matchup against Ole Miss’s front seven. If Louisville can do that, that should open opportunities for Lincoln Kienholz to get into a rhythm as a passer, and push the ball downfield — something that Jeff Brohm has been vocal about wanting to do this offseason.

• How will Louisville’s defense attack Trinidad Chambliss?

Mark Ivey has made a reputation as an aggressive, high-energy coach, and it’s translated on the field with his players. As the new defensive coordinator, Louisville will face a tremendous task with containing Trinidad Chambliss, who is a unique dual-threat quarterback in that he uses his legs to buy time on his passes.

Thus, the main question for Louisville will be, “How much are the Cardinals going to blitz and bring pressure to Chambliss?” Ole Miss will be replacing both starting tackles from last year’s squad, which on paper, should bode well for Louisville’s talented edge rusher group. If Louisville can win the catchups on the edge, it’s a good first step for keeping the Ole Miss offense at bay for most of the game. Louisville’s secondary will also have to force turnovers, something that Chambliss was able to limit to a high degree last season (only three interceptions last season).

All white, with a splash of red. The Cards will flock to the field on Sunday night looking clean and looking to hand the Rebels a sound defeat.

Everyone has opinions of the difficulty of the 2026 Louisville schedule. Not having to play Miami, Clemson and Virginia is definitely favorable as far as the ACC portion of the schedule goes. Georgia dropping us from the schedule stinks but picking up Ole Miss may have added to the strength of schedule because Ole Miss beat Georgia in the playoffs last season. I’ve already given you my annual game by game predictions but now let’s take a little closer look as I rank each game by difficulty and importance.

12. Villanova – Non conference game. Appears as a definite victory with a 97% chance to win.

11. Stanford – While it is a conference game. it doesn’t really help the SOS. 88% chance to win.

10. Wake Forest – This game would be tougher and mean more if it were a road game. 73% chance to win.

9. Syracuse – Playing at the Dome is always a small worry. 72% chance to win.

8. Kentucky – It’s a non conference game against an unranked team. Doesn’t really mean much for the ACC standings or SOS. It’s just for the fans. 57% chance to win.

7. North Carolina – Could be tougher with Bobby knowing what Jeff likes to do. But that goes both ways. Conference road game adds to importance. 55% chance to win.

6. Florida State – While FL State hasn’t been great lately, they are still a name and a conference opponent. 62% chance to win.

5. NC State – #5 and #4 could be interchangable. Both conference road games against good but not great teams. Both have a chance to be better than predicted. 74% chance to win.

4. Georgia Tech – * See #5. 60% chance to win.

3. Pittsburgh – I believe Pitt is being overlooked and they should have given Louisville the L last season but folded late. A conference home game this late in the season could have a lot of implications. 65% chance to win.

2. Ole Miss – Highest ranked team on the schedule. But with that, a close loss to a ranked non conference team as the opening game of the season, doesn’t destroy your season. But it’s still very important game. Toughest game on the schedule but not the most important. 26% chance to win.

1. SMU – 2nd highest ranked team on the schedule but being a conference game makes this one so much more important. Not as difficult as Ole Miss but losing this one could make it very difficult to make the ACC championship game and with that, hinders the CFP chances. A close loss to SMU is still a conference loss but a close loss to a top 10 Ole Miss doesn’t hurt as bad in the national perspective. Having SMU as their first conference game puts the winner in the drivers seat for a spot in the ACC championship game. 53% chance to win.
