Unfortunately, with their natural habitat being replaced by development, the native bees are struggling to survive at a time when we need them more than ever as essential pollinators. Many conscientious gardeners hear this and immediately jump into action by offering a native bee house for these species. But these bee houses actually only provide one part of what these native bee species need to survive and they can often be more work to maintain than many gardeners anticipate. So is a native bee house the right pick for your garden?

Time or resource level: EASY
Lucky for us (and the bees) providing a welcoming habitat with huge impact is actually quite easy, it just takes a bit of intention.

Plant Native. Native plants are always the best bet for supporting native wildlife and they are the best source of pollen and nectar for native bees to eat. In fact, some bee species are pollen specialists and can only use the pollen of certain native plants to feed their offspring, so providing a wide variety of native species is best.
Luckily, no matter what kind of garden you have, whether it’s a sprawling yard or a balcony container garden, you can find native plants that will thrive. You can even save money by growing them from seed. Find plants native to your region and make sure they provide staggered blooms throughout the season.
Leave the Stems and Logs. One of the best things you can do for these native bees is to leave the brown, dried stems of your plants standing through the winter and into spring. Many native bees lay their eggs in the stems, and cutting them down in fall can prevent the next generation from emerging in spring. Once you do cut the stems in late spring, leave them roughly 18-24 inches tall so the next generation of native bees can use them as nesting places. Just let the new growth of the plant grow up around the old stems and you won’t even see them! You can also keep a fallen log or two in your garden which will also serve as nesting spots for native bees.
Avoid the Harmful Chemicals. Pesticides have far-reaching impacts way past the animals and plants they target. Remove pesticides from your gardening routine to ensure you don’t accidently harm the native bees you’re attracting.
Time or resource level: MODERATE

Once you’ve already provided the basics for these bees by planting native, leaving the stems, and removing pesticides, you can start adding more beneficial elements to your space.
Add in a Mud Source. Many of the native bee species will use mud to build the chamber walls of their nesting tunnels and they only search for this resource within a short distance. Offering even a small source of damp soil in a shallow dish can go far for these little pollinators. Not only will these mud dishes help the native bees, but many butterflies will also use it as a puddling area where they can get salts and minerals from the mud and some birds like robins and phoebes may even use this mud as building material for their nests!
Time or resource level: DIFFICULT
The previous steps will be more than sufficient for providing habitat for native bees and will fit most gardeners’ time and resource availability. However, you may find yourself so enamored with these little insects that you want to turn this interest into an outright hobby. In this case, adding a native bee house may be a good fit for you!

Get a Native Bee House (But Pick the Right One): Not all native bee houses are created equal. If you’re going to purchase a solitary bee house, we recommend finding a vendor that has put time and thought into making sure you have all of the educational resources you need to care for the house and the bees. Look for manufacturers that specialize in native bee houses rather than the houses sold in home improvement and hardware stores, which are often of poor design.
Remember that adding a native bee house is not a replacement for offering habitat through native plants, standing stems, pesticide reduction, or mud sources, but is simply a way to offer supplemental nesting spots for certain species.
Commit to Proper Maintenance and Cleaning: Anytime we add a human-made structure into nature, it will need human intervention to keep it clean, safe, and actually beneficial to wildlife. Bee houses can sometimes do more harm than good by attracting bee predators and parasites that discover the house and realize it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet. To prevent this, bee houses must be closely monitored and the bee cocoons removed from the nesting tubes, disinfected, and stored in a refrigerator at proper humidity levels through the winter for release the following spring.
If you’ve purchased your bee house from a reputable vendor that offers ample educational resources, these instructions will either come with your house or can be found through your vendor. If this is too much of a commitment, then a bee house may not be the right fit for you, and that is alright! Remember that these bee houses, while a fun addition, are not the most vital habitat component for these bees and you can maximize your effort by offering the other habitat elements covered.
While there are many store-bought options for housing native bee species or even buying the bees themselves, it’s important to remember that nature can’t truly be purchased. These bees are one part of a broad and interconnected ecosystem and will not thrive in an ecological vacuum. The best way to support and bring native bees to your yard is to build a healthy habitat full of native plants and free of pesticides, and the bees will find their way to you.

One of bees’ most important ecological roles is as pollinators. They visit flowers to feed on nectar and gather pollen to feed their young. In doing so bees spread some of that pollen and fertilize or “pollinate” the flowers, which then form seeds that become the next generation of plants. Those seeds are often packaged in fruits, berries and nuts that then become food for other animals, from birds to reptiles to mammals (including us). Those animals then disperse the seeds away from the parent plant in their droppings, which serve as fertilizer.
Some 85 percent of flowering plants rely on animal pollination. With over 20,000 bee species on the planet and around 4,000 that are native to North America, bees are some of the most important pollinators due to sheer numbers, species diversity and co-evolution with the plants they pollinate. Bees are also tremendously important crop pollinators that we rely on for much of our own food. Without bees, many plants in nature couldn’t reproduce, and many other wildlife species would lose critical food sources (again, including us).
Yet many bee species are rapidly disappearing. The honey bee has received a lot of attention because of its agricultural importance, but here in North America honey bees are an introduced non-native species largely existing in managed hives. While the honey bee industry has experienced some challenges that need to be addressed, honey bees are not at risk of extinction. Yet the attention the honey bee has gotten as an agriculturally important domesticated species often overshadows the decline of our wild, native bee species.

For example, the rusty-patched bumble bee is now federally listed as an endangered species. The American bumble bee and the western bumble bee are also disappearing before our eyes but aren’t protected. The population status of many wild native bee species is unknown due to lack of funding and research. Habitat loss, pesticide use, disease and climate change are all factors in the decline of our native bee species, as is competition from non-native honey bees. In North America, wild native bees are the natural pollinators of 80 percent of flowering plants in the wild (as well as some crops), so any decline in their populations is significant.
Now that we’ve established how important our wild native bee species are, how can we help them? Here are four things you can do in your own yard or other garden space to support native bees.
Plant Natives
Our native bees co-evolved with native plants and rely on them. Many native bee species are pollen specialists that can only feed their young pollen from specific native plants. Without those plants, the bees cannot survive. Fill your yard with a diversity of blooming native trees, shrubs and wildflowers that collectively provide blossoms for bees from early spring into the fall, and you’ll ensure native bees have food to support their populations. Reduce the Size of Your Lawn
One of the easiest ways to provide more native plants for bees is to convert some of your lawn into new planting beds each year. Keep however much lawn you actually use and let the rest become beautiful garden beds to support pollinators like bees and other wildlife.

Stop Using Pesticides
Broad-spectrum insecticides kill bees directly (including those sprayed by mosquito control companies and applied by lawn care companies) and herbicides kill native plants on which bees rely. There are many tried and true organic gardening techniques as alternatives to pesticides for the home landscape.
Offer Nesting Habitat
The vast majority of bee species—around 90 percent–are solitary. That means they don’t live in hives, they don’t have queens, they don’t make honey and they won’t sting. Individual female bees nest in small tunnels in the ground, in dead wood or hollow plant stems. They build a series of tiny chambers in the tunnel, each with an egg and a ball of nectar and pollen as a food source for the young.

How do you provide nesting habitat for these solitary bees? If you see an individual bee going in and out of such a tunnel, simply leaving it alone is the best thing to do. Add some old logs to your garden beds and bees will use them to nest as they decay. Don’t cut your perennial stems down in the fall. Instead, leave them standing until early spring. The perennial seed heads will feed wild birds through winter. In early spring, you can then cut the stems down to around 10-12 inches. Those cut stems will become nesting habitat for bees as they emerge in the spring and summer. As the plant sprouts new growth in the spring, it will quickly hide the old stems.
Our native bumble bees are social species and they do have queens and hives. The queens overwinter underneath the natural leaf layer that forms in the fall under trees and shrubs, so utilize your fallen leaves as natural mulch in your garden beds to support them.
Avoid putting out “bee houses” that have become popular. Many are poorly designed and unless you can commit to the maintenance (which involved harvesting bee pupae, removing parasites, and storing the pupae in your fridge over the winter), they end up attracting as many bee parasites and predators as bees.

Over 100,000 invertebrates—including bees, butterflies, beetles, moths, wasps, and flies—and more than a thousand mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians take on the job of pollinating plants.
At least 80% of all flowering plant species need the help of wildlife to move their heavy pollen grains from plant to plant for fertilization.
Worldwide, there are an estimated 20,000 species of bees, and approximately 4,000 bee species are native to the United States. As they forage, bees perform the critical act of pollination. In fact, bees pollinate a staggering amount of all flowering plants, including many fruits, nuts, and vegetables grown in the United States.
Bumble bees are important pollinators of wild flowering plants and agricultural crops. They are characterized by their rounded, fuzzy bodies and their ability to perform “buzz pollination,” which involves grasping a flower in their jaws and vibrating their wing muscles to dislodge the pollen. Many plants—including a number of wildflowers and crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cranberries—benefit from buzz pollination.
Fun fact: Some species of bee employ a technique called sonication, or buzz pollination, when they harvest pollen. The bee rapidly vibrates its flight muscles while attached to the flower which loosens the pollen, making it easier to collect.

Hummingbirds are amazingly adapted pollinators and play an essential role in pollinating many plants. They have long, slender bills and tongues with a two-pronged, feather-like tip that they use to drink nectar from brightly-colored flowers. They drink up to two times their body weight per day. As they move from plant to plant, they carry pollen. As they pollinate native plants in the wild and in your garden, hummingbirds add a splash of color to our landscapes.
Most hummingbird feeders are red to mimic the blooms of the native plants they naturally feed on. In addition to flower nectar, hummingbirds also rely on tiny invertebrates as a key food source, including mosquitoes, flies, and spiders.
In North America, ruby-throated hummingbirds populate the eastern United States; common species in the west include broad-tailed, rufus, and black-chinned.

The monarch butterfly is one of North America’s most iconic species, with vibrant orange-and-black wings that streak across the sky. The impressive monarch makes a multi-generational 3,000-mile migration, traveling south to Mexico each fall and back up to Canada in the spring.
As adults, monarchs feed on nectar from a wide range of blooming native plants, including milkweed. Milkweed produces glycoside toxins to deter animals from eating them, but monarchs have evolved immunity to these toxins. As they feed, monarch caterpillars store up the toxins in their body, making them taste bad, which in turn deters their predators. The toxins remain in their system even after metamorphosis, protecting them as adult butterflies as well.
Monarchs have suffered a population decline upward of 90 percent in recent decades. The decline is inextricably linked to a decline in milkweed. Without milkweed, monarchs can’t complete their life cycle, and populations plummet.

Pollinators are impacted by climate change in a number of ways. Warmer temperatures can encourage plants to bloom sooner than usual. Not all pollinators can adapt to an early blooming season, which means that many pollinators may have limited food availability from plants.
Pollinators are also vulnerable to periods of drought. With warm weather and low precipitation, flowers produce less nectar to conserve energy. Reduced nectar means that pollinators get fewer calories and sugar which can lower reproduction.
Native plants have formed symbiotic relationships with native wildlife over thousands of years, offering the most sustainable habitat. Native plants help the environment the most when planted in places that match their growing requirements and will thrive in your region’s soils, moisture, and weather.

Most people associate pollination with bees and butterflies but often forget the work of their furry colleagues: bats. Not all bats eat insects. Some live on a diet of nectar and fruit. Bats that feed on nectar also serve as pollinators to nighttime blooming plants.
Bats take the night shift, playing a major role in pollinating crops. So naturally, these bats feed on flowers, including those of valuable commercial crops, like figs, dates, bananas, and mangoes which have flowers that only open at night. In North America bats pollinate agave, which is used to make products like tequila, mezcal, and agave nectar.
Throughout time, plants and mammals have shared a dependency on one another that is mutually beneficial.

As the poster animals for the plight of declining pollinators, bees are much beloved by the public. Did you know bees evolved from wasps? Yes, wasps are pollinators too.
Wasps, like bees, have very high-energy needs that must be met for their survival. They need key resources such as pollen and nectar from a variety of flowers. Many wasps feed on flower nectar, but unlike bees most species are also carnivorous or parasitic, feeding on other insects (including pests) and spiders.
Many wasps are smooth-bodied and do not actively collect pollen. Those with hairs lack the branched, pollen-trapping hairs found on most bees, making them relatively minor pollinators of most plants.
Nonetheless, they do provide pollination, carrying and dropping some pollen grains as they move among flowers.

National Wildlife Federation recommends that yards strive for 70% native plants to provide multi-season bloom, including flowers, shrubs, grasses, and groundcovers and trees.
This guidance takes into consideration that most people are managing existing landscapes and gardens with a variety of established trees and plants, often including vegetable and herb gardens.
When feasible, National Wildlife Federation advocates for ideally creating a space with a combination of flowering plants, shrubs and trees which are 100% native to have the ultimate benefit. Many Certified Wildlife Habitat® owners make 100% native their goal. New communities are being developed with these goals in mind. NWF’s partnership with national homebuilder Taylor Morrison has established more than 7,000 open-space acres of 100% native plants to benefit both local wildlife and nearby homeowners. In addition, as signatories to NWF’s Monarch Pledge, they have installed permanent monarch demonstration gardens which are chemical free and planted with 80% native plants including native milkweed in more than 100 communities across the country.
Recent studies clearly show the benefits to birds, butterflies, native bees, and other wildlife of landscapes and gardens with higher concentrations and diversity of native plants.
A study conducted across backyards in Washington, D.C., found that Carolina chickadees are not able to successfully raise enough young to maintain their population numbers in areas where less than 70% of the plants are native species. This research from the University of Delaware highlighted that chickadees rely on caterpillars of butterflies and moths as a primary food source for their young, and these caterpillars need native plants as their primary food source. The more native host plants, the more birds will thrive. For example, one pair of chickadees require between 6,000-9,000 insects and other invertebrates—mostly caterpillars—to successfully raise just one clutch of their young.

In fact, “Ninety-six percent of terrestrial birds rear their young on insects,” says Dr. Doug Tallamy. Because native insects, in particular butterflies and moths, did not evolve with non-native plants, most lack the ability to process the non-native plants’ chemical defenses and cannot eat them. Over 90% of herbivorous or “leaf eating” insects specialize in one or a select few species of native plants to survive.
Research on 24 NWF-certified habitats across the country—part of an ambitious four-year study, American Residential Macrosystem: Yard Futures, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) highlighted additional benefits to birds. This study shows the impact of Certified Wildlife Habitat®, native plant concentrated properties, in contrast to highly maintained lawn-heavy properties.
Conventional landscapes with maintained lawns tended to host “generalist” birds such as house sparrows, house finches, crows, and grackles. By contrast, those that include native plants tend to support more “specialist” birds that have evolved specific needs for resources most likely to be found in their native habitats. In addition, different bird species tended to show up in each wildlife-habitat yard, supporting greater biodiversity. Learn more about this study from the webinar: You Built It and They Came.

Increased percentages of native plants help more than just the birds. While the birds rely on the caterpillars supported by native plants, they also support and attract more butterflies like the monarch, swallowtails, and many others. For example, milkweed is the only host plant for monarch caterpillars.
The good news is that another research study showed that “A whopping 90 percent of Certified Wildlife Habitat® owners grow native host plants for caterpillars of butterflies and moths, compared to only 8 percent of the neighbors and 4 percent of the owners at random locations.” Planting a diverse selection of host plants not only supports the caterpillars, they also provide nectar that is the food for the adult butterflies and other pollinators. Monarchs rely on these nectar sources for the energy they need during their long migrations.
Between 15% to 60% of the 4,000 North American native bee species are pollen specialists who can only feed their young the protein-rich pollen from 40% of native plants. Adult bees consume nectar from these and other flowering plants for energy but without the pollen from these native plants they cannot successfully reproduce and keep their populations healthy. In fact, these pollen specialist bees often have body shapes and structures that are aligned to the shape and structures of the native plants they rely on. As such, the native plant species, with which these bees have co-evolved, are essential to their survival, and increases the argument for adding high percentages of these natives to your habitat space.
To increase overall quantity and diversity of native plants for where you live, make it a goal to plant as many of these critical Keystone Plants as you can. April has now been proclaimed as Native Plant Month and this spring marks Garden for Wildlife’s 50th anniversary and eleven years celebrating May as Garden for Wildlife Month.
There are up to 4,000 native bee species in the United States, according to the U.S. Geological Society. Yet, the average person is likely more familiar with the (non-native) honeybee who goes back to the hive buzzing with life with a queen, her workers, and her mates. Our general understanding of bees is not the full truth. During a recent webinar from our What’s Buzzing in Texas? webinar series, Dr. Jessica Beckham from the University of Texas, San Antonio, explains that hive-oriented or “social” bees like honey bees or bumblebees are the exception in the bee world. Most bee species lead solitary lives.
Solitary bees make up about 98% of the native bee species in the United States, according to the University of Minnesota Bee Lab website. With thousands of species, it’s not surprising that these solitary bees come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. They exhibit a variety of different behaviors, too. For all the differences, the one trait all these species have in common is that they live alone.

Solitary species like carpenter bees, mason bees and some sweat bees, carry on their lives in a very different manner from their social counterparts. The adult female lives independently without any shared work duties with others of her species. She alone carries out all the duties usually delegated to different members in a hive setting.
Depending on the species, the solitary female may create her nest underground, in the hollows of plants, in rock crevices, or with a plastic-like material she creates. Dr. Beckham notes that solitary females are not as defensive of their abodes and will instead fly-off if something happens. As a result, there are some solitary female species that will take over the nests of other bee species to lay their larvae rather than create a nest of their own.

All solitary bees live for about a year with much of that time spent in the early development stages from larva to pupa. Their adult lives last only three to eight weeks. During this stage of life, solitary male bees only have one function—to mate.
Because of the lack of a hive or communal habitat, the solitary male bee will sleep in flowers during the night while it competes for mating with nearby females. Dr. Beckham observes solitary males return to her garden every night to sleep among her flowers.

While not discussed as much, solitary bee populations are declining. Considering that solitary species are the majority of bee species in the United States, there will be dire impacts if we do not do more to protect these bees. While bee conservation should be addressed on a massive scale, Professor Beckham listed a few ways you can help solitary bees in your yard:

Honey bees have long been known as the poster child for the “Save the Bees” campaigns, stealing much of the spotlight from native bees. The National Wildlife Federation’s sponsorship of “Rewilding Honeybees” at the International Wildlife Film Festival brought up many questions relating to “wild” bees. Were honey bees once wild? Where did honey bees originate from? How do honey bees and our native bees interact?

Honey bees are native to Europe and were first introduced to the United States in the 1600s for honey production. Now 400 years later, they are the most widely distributed livestock animal in the United States. We rely primarily on honey bees to pollinate 1/3 of the food we eat, making them paramount to commercial agriculture. Even though honey bees may be one of the most important species for humans, they compete heavily with native bee populations.
“While vital to agriculture and the economy, keeping honey bees is not wildlife conservation,” said National Wildlife Federation Naturalist David Mizejewski.
However, native bees are the backbone of our ecosystems. They are the ones who historically made our wildflowers grow big and strong. To determine whether a bee is considered native to an area, we look at the species’ geological span over time. Bee-lieve it or not there are about 4,000 native bee species in North America and 20,000 different species across the globe, according to Montana State University Extension.

The number of native bee species in Montana alone is estimated to be in the hundreds. National Wildlife Federation even has a poster of just Montana bumble bees, Genus Bombus, showcasing their variety of size, shape, and color. Native bees co-evolved to pollinate specific plants, making them instrumental to their ecosystems. Interestingly, some of these plants can only be pollinated by specific native pollinators, meaning honey bees’ pollination strategies are ill-suited, and some 30-60 percent of native bees can only feed on certain native plants without which they cannot survive.
Due to honey bees’ economic, agricultural, and recreational benefits, they have taken center stage in the bee world, leaving native bees in the wings (pun intended). Much of what we are taught is focused on honey bees, rather than all bees. For example, many of our bees are not black and yellow, rather blue or green. Mason bees are metallic green or blue and mining bees also may have a dull metallic blue or green body, but can also be black.
When we think of bees we typically associate them with colonies or as social bees, however, 90% of North America’s native bee species are solitary. Instead of living in hives, individual solitary bees nest in small tunnels in fallen logs, dead flower stalks, dead trees, or will build underground galleries. Unlike honey bees, solitary bees don’t have a queen or make honey. Without the need to protect a colony or queen, solitary bees are less likely to sting you (you’d really have to shake them up for them to sting).
While all this might leave you more confused, remember this; honey bees, or honey bee keeping, is important to supply our food sources. However, honey bees are still a domesticated species, just like chickens. The National Wildlife Federation is a wildlife advocacy and education organization that promotes native wildlife, including native birds and native bees, not backyard chickens and honey bee hives. We recognize by planting gardens for honey bees, native bees benefit too. The best way to benefit both honey bees and native bees is by planting native plants, some of which are pollinated more efficiently by native bees.
More bees are working than meets the eye, so next time you see a poster for “Save the Bees”, send a bee high five to all the native bees out there!
The honeybee (Apis mellifera) is the iconic bee species that has become the face of the pollinator decline crisis. They provide important agricultural pollination services.
But you might not know that in North America, honeybees are not considered wildlife. They are a domesticated species, originally imported from Europe, that exist primarily in managed hives. In North America, however, there are over 4,000 wild native bee species that provide equally important pollination services in natural ecosystems as well as in agriculture and most are far less well-known or as well-studied as honeybees. Like honeybees, many native bee species are also facing steep population declines and need our help.

After honeybees, bumble bees are the most well-known group of bees. There are approximately 50 bumble bee species found across North America. Like honeybees, but unlike most other native bee species, bumble bees form hives. In early spring, queen bumble bees emerge from the ground where they spent the winter months dormant and seek out an old rodent burrow, a hole in a fallen log, or even an empty birdhouse to start their hive. In addition to pollinating wild plants, bumble bees are also commercially important, contributing to the pollination of crops such as tomatoes and alfalfa.

Domesticated honeybees and native bumble bees live in social hives, but most other native bee species are solitary. This means they don’t make honey or share in the care of their young. Instead, females of solitary bee species lay their eggs in a series of chambers in a nesting tunnel. These solitary nesters roll pollen and nectar into a ball, called a “bee loaf,” and lay one egg on it. They build a chamber wall and repeat the process until the tunnel is filled. Each egg hatches, the bee larva feeds on the bee loaf, pupates, and eventually chews out of its chamber to begin the process anew. While individual bees will nest in close proximity to each other where nesting conditions are favorable, they do not live communally.

Seventy percent of our native solitary nesting bees use tunnels in the ground to lay their eggs. The other thirty percent of solitary bees use hollowed-out plant stems or tunnels in dead trees or fallen logs as egg-laying places. Providing nesting places for native bees is as important as providing native plants to supply them with pollen and nectar. Leave patches of bare soil in your garden for ground-nesting bees, leave plant stems standing through the winter and keep dead trees or fallen logs. You can also put up “bee houses” filled with replaceable nesting tubes that provide places for native bees to reproduce.
Not all bees are black and yellow or have stripes. In fact, many native bees sport shiny, metallic exoskeletons and don’t look like the traditional image of a “bee” that we were taught as children. They come in colors that range from green to blue to black to red to copper, or combinations of colors. Many sweat bee species are metallic green, some with stripes and some solidly green. These ground-nesting bees were named because they do indeed like to drink our sweat, which contains salt and other minerals.


The rusty-patched bumble bee was once common across much of the Midwest and Northeast but has faced such steep population declines in recent years that it was officially listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 2017. The primary threats to this species include habitat loss, pesticides, invasive species, and non-native pathogens.
Once an important pollinator of wild plants as well as crops including plums, apples, and alfalfa, the loss of the rusty-patched bumble bee over an estimated 87 percent of its range is a red flag that bee decline is a serious problem. There are also seven yellow-faced bee species native to Hawaii that have been listed as endangered.
Native squash bees are plant specialists. They co-evolved with the wild squash and gourd plants in North America and are dependent on the pollen of these plants as a critical food source for their larvae. Female squash bees provision their young with squash pollen in nesting tunnels they excavate in the ground. Squash bee species also help pollinate cultivated varieties of squash, pumpkins, melons, and gourds. Male squash bees gather around the blossoms of these plants looking for females, and even sleep inside the squash blossoms at night.

Honeybees do the bulk of pollination of our commercial agricultural crops that require pollination, but many native bees are important commercially as well. Bumble bees employ a special tactic called “buzz pollination” where they grab a flower and vigorously vibrate their wing muscles to shake the pollen out of the flower.

Honeybees cannot do this and can’t pollinate crops such as tomatoes, cranberries, or eggplant that require buzz pollination. The southeastern blueberry bee is an important pollinator of—you guessed it—blueberry crops. They also use buzz pollination. Orchard mason bees are extremely efficient pollinators of fruit trees (hence their name).
In addition to drinking flower nectar, honeybees also drink water when the temperatures rise. They transport the water back to the hive, then slowly release it while buzzing their wings, evaporating the liquid, and creating a natural form of air conditioning that keeps the hive from overheating.

Bees and wasps are closely related and share many similarities. In fact, bees evolved from wasps. Wasps are carnivores, hunting insects and spiders to feed themselves or their young. Bees emerged through co-evolution with flowering plants, which offered a new food source in the form of nectar and pollen.

Bees evolved to give up the hunting lifestyle of wasps and only feed on these plant foods, getting their protein from pollen. Many wasps also feed on nectar and like bees also provide important pollination services, but they also constantly patrol your garden looking for caterpillars and other invertebrates—many of which are garden pests-to feed to their larvae.
Neither bees nor wasps will sting if left alone, so the best way to avoid getting stung is not to swat at them and just let them go about their business of pollination and pest control. Unlike wasps, which are smooth, most bees have furry bodies, which helps them gather pollen.
You can help bees by creating a wildlife habitat garden at home or anywhere in your community. Plant native blooming trees, shrubs, and wildflowers to provide bees with nectar and pollen, their natural food source. Plant densely to provide cover from bad weather and hiding places from predators. Provide nesting areas for native bees by leaving patches of soil free of plants and mulch, keeping dead trees, logs, and plant stems, or putting out a bee nesting house. Offer water by filling a birdbath with large gravel for bees to land on to get a drink. Don’t spray pesticides. Bees pollinate both our crops and wild plants, providing us with one-third of the food we eat and allowing wild plants to reproduce and produce the berries, fruits, seeds and other plant foods that form the base of the natural food web. Loss of bee populations poses a significant risk to both our agricultural system as well as the ecosystem that supports other wildlife.
Fixing this big problem can start with some small solutions. Each of us can create a bee-friendly habitat in our own yard or gardens to make a difference for bee populations on the local level. If each of us does our part in our own yards, the collective benefit to bees will be significant. Here are five ways you can help bees:
Native plants are the plant species that are naturally found in your region that provide bees with the nectar and pollen that are their only food source. In fact, some native bees are plant specialists, and can only feed their larvae the pollen from specific native plants. Native plants are great choices for the garden, because they are adapted to the natural soil, rainfall and weather conditions of your region.
If you plant them in the right spot they’ll thrive with no need for additional watering, fertilizer or chemicals that are bad for bees. Many native plants are highly ornamental and available at your local garden center. Lawns are the standard in American landscapes, but unfortunately, they offer no habitat for bees, which rely on blooming wildflowers, shrubs and trees to provide the nectar and pollen upon which they feed. Make it a goal to reduce your lawn and add a new garden bed filled with blooming native plants this spring and you’ll be doing the bees a big favor. Let lawn areas that remain grow natural by mowing less and avoiding herbicides that kill nectar-producing lawn plants such as clover, creeping thyme, and dandelions
Bees are insects, so using broad-spectrum insecticides on your lawn and garden will kill them. Exposure to insecticides is one reason that many bee populations are on the decline. Don’t use them.
One particular group of insecticides that are a growing cause for concern are called neonicotinoids. These systemic insecticides are absorbed by plants and cannot be washed off. They are present in all parts of the plant, including the nectar and pollen fed on by bees.

These chemicals are key ingredients in many pesticides sold for home use, but they are also used by plant growers before plants even get to the nursery for sale. Don’t use products with neonicotinoid chemicals, and don’t purchase plants that have been treated with them. Ask your local nursery if their plants have been treated before purchasing, and let them know as a consumer that you want only neonicotinoid-free plants.
Instead of using pesticides, practice organic gardening techniques like planting natives to attract pest predators, hand-picking pests, using physical barriers and building healthy soil to increase plant resistance to pests.
Insects need liquid but can’t drink from deep water for fear of falling in and drowning. Provide this vital habitat resource for bees by filling a birdbath with large pebbles and filling halfway with water. The pebbles will provide landing places for bees to safely get a drink and places to quickly crawl out should they fall in. A bonus is that birds, butterflies and other wildlife will also be able to use this kind of water feature. Dump the water every few days and replace with fresh to eliminate any mosquito larvae in the water.

Domesticated honey bees and native bumble bees live in social hives, but most other native bee species are solitary. This means they don’t make honey or share in the care of their young. Instead, females of solitary bee species lay their eggs in a series of chambers in a nesting tunnel. These solitary nesters roll pollen and nectar into in a ball called a “bee loaf” and lay one egg on it.

They build a chamber wall and repeat the process until the tunnel is filled. Each egg hatches, the bee larva feeds on the bee loaf, pupates, and eventually chews out of its chamber as an adult to begin the process anew. While individual bees will nest in close proximity to each other where nesting conditions are favorable, they do not live communally.
Seventy percent of our native solitary nesting bees use tunnels in the ground to lay their eggs. The other thirty percent of solitary bees use hollowed-out plant stems or tunnels in dead trees or fallen logs as egg-laying places. Providing nesting places for native bees is as important as providing native plants to supply them with pollen and nectar. Leave patches of bare soil in your garden for ground-nesting bees, leave plant stems standing through the winter and keep dead trees or fallen logs. You can also put up “native bee nesting houses” that provide places for native bees to reproduce.

Native plants co-evolved with the native wildlife of your region. Native plants form the foundation of habitat for pollinators by providing them with pollen and nectar for food, cover from the elements and predators, and places where their young can grow. The best way to attract beautiful butterflies, busy bees, speedy hummingbirds and other pollinators is to fill your yard with native plants.
There are 4,000 bee species native to North America (the honey bee is a European import) and most of those don’t form hives. Instead, individual female bees lay their eggs in tunnels in decaying wood or in sandy soil. You can offer such nesting spots by leaving tree snags on your property, by leaving bare batches of sandy soil, or by building or buying whimsical native bee houses.

Bees are our most important pollinators, and they are insects. So are butterflies like the monarch. Using insecticides will kill these insects. Herbicides will kill important native plants such as milkweed that pollinators rely upon as a food source and a place to raise young. Make the commitment to avoid using chemicals and to maintain your garden in a natural, organic way.

America’s native grasslands are critically important for pollinators such as bees and monarch butterflies. Our grasslands are filled with native plants that offer nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and a wide variety of pollinators. They also provide milkweed, the only host plant for monarch caterpillars. Today, more than 90 percent of native grasslands have been converted to cropland and development. Grasslands are disappearing faster than any other ecosystem in North America, and that’s a big problem for pollinators.
