Cycling to Serve- UNITE FOR GOOD Report from FCS Booth Taipeh

As my term as the 2025–26 Club President came to a close, I reflected on the past year and realized that everything has its origins. In 2022, when TAIPEI LOHAS Cycling of Rotary Club was founded, I served as the Charter Secretary. We organized various cycling-for-charity activities and envisioned that one day our club would be able to initiate a Global Grant project. In 2024, during my year as President-Elect, I considered that if we were to apply for a Global Grant during my presidency, we would first need to establish an international partner club to meet the requirements for overseas funding. I started to look for reference from RI website.
In April 2025, while searching the keyword “cycling for charity,” I discovered the Rotary Fellowship Cycling to Serve. Among more than 100 officially recognized Rotary Fellowships worldwide, this is the only one dedicated to cycling. This fellowship, with a 40-year history, aligns perfectly with our club’s DNA. I hoped that joining this platform would help us build international friendships. At the time, the fellowship had 600 members across 22 countries—yet Taiwan, known as “a kingdom of cycling” in Asia, was absent. I proposed to 25-26 District Governor James the idea of placing Taiwan’s flag on the global website. With his strong support, he invited me to serve as the 2025–26 District 3521 Rotary Fellowship Chair, specifically to lead Taiwan’s application to join Cycling to Serve. After nearly three months of coordination, Taiwan’s chapter was officially approved by the global board in July 2025, allowing our national flag to be represented on this international platform.

Fast forward to the current, the Rotary International Convention returned to Taipei after 32 years. At the House of Fellowship in the convention center, a Cycling to Serve booth was featured, and we were entrusted by the fellowship headquarters to welcome Rotary cyclists from around the world. During the five-day event, numerous service initiatives were showcased at the booth. These included a publication by a PDG from Russia promoting cycling for charity, “Cycling for Trees” initiatives from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and presentations from our Taipei LOHAS Cycling Rotary Club—such as the Lohas Biynan Cup charity cycling event in Yilan, Taiwan, a Global Grant project supporting habitat conservation and stream patrol training for Taiwan’s national treasure fish, the Formosan landlocked salmon, and the Pingjing Street Farm education program in Taipei, Taiwan. These efforts resonated strongly with Rotary cyclists from around the globe. As a member of the Taipei LOHAS Cycling Rotary Club, I feel deeply proud.

After Taipei Convention, we got 47% growth rate of the number of membership of Taiwan Chapter. 23 potential members from 10 countries. When a single idea takes root, the universe seems to align in remarkable ways. Everything begins with one club. With courage and determination, we continue moving forward. 2025–26 UNITE FOR GOOD! Keep Cycling to Serve! Let us continue to unite for good and ride for service together.

Here we share the story about the 3520 Cycling Team Tour de Taiwan in Nov. 2025

It was great to have Bill joining us. During the celebration dinner of this tour, we went on the stage to introduce Fellowship Cycling to Serve to 250 cyclists, so that more Rotarians could know more about our fellowship. I made a small flag of Cycling to Serve and took pictures with it to promote our fellowship every day.

In 9 days, we completed 1,058 kilometers and 7,233 meters of total climbing, donated bicycle racks, promoted End Polio and contributed to 2 NGOs, living out Rotary’s spirit of serving others through direct action.  For more details, please see the attached word file.

The Best Kept Secret in Rotary Cycling

It’s 6am, and in the park by the Keelung River in Taipei the Taiko drums beat a welcome

to 150 Rotarians as we assemble for the start of the 9-day cycling tour of Taiwan. And

here I get the first of many surprises on my first visit to Taiwan – everyone has an

English-language ‘nickname’ so I’m quickly meeting Sam, Beryl, Dean, Builder, Marketer

and many, many more. All kitted out in striking green kit for this years ride, we get a final

briefing from the ride master (rule number 1 – do not overtake the ride master. Guess

who managed to break that on day one . . .) before we set oR en masse on the riverside

path and head towards the East coast.

Surprise number two comes just an hour later when we stop for a food station. This will

be a regular part of the ride as the catering van leapfrogs us and somehow manages to

set up & serve hot food all the way around the island. Being more used to one cake stop

per ride, the prospect of ‘café legs’ many times a day was a concern but this was soon

dispelled and I’m a convert! Even better was the lunch stop; a full sit-down lunch with

as much superb Taiwanese food as we can eat, and an opportunity for me to show oR

my chopstick-using skills to the locals and get to chat to a diRerent group around the

table every day. The subtle upside of the food stops is, of course, that it reforms the

peloton each time so the marshals can keep things manageable.

The riding itself proves to be very pleasant. The first three days follow either dedicated

cycle paths or well-marked lanes by the East Coast main road, which undulates along

with the Pacific Ocean on one side and tree-covered hills on the other. Plenty of

beautiful scenery to admire as we pass, and of particular note was the stop at the

monument which marks the transition into the Tropics on day 2. As well as the catering

truck, there’s a team of mechanics waiting for us at every stop, along with a trio of

masseurs who, not surprisingly, become very popular as the days progress.

Day 3 brings the first real climb of the tour, a 450 metre winding road up and over the

spine of hills that run down the whole country. Here we see some damage to the road

from recent typhoons, but there’s a marshal there at every rough patch to warn us and a

welcome food stop at the summit to top up again.

One thing I should mention is the range of cyclists that take part in this event. The age

range is from early 20’s to early 80’s (one exception being 12-year-old Melody who was

on her third tour in 2025!) and there are equal numbers of e-bikes, city bikes and road

bikes being used, this really is an inclusive event. For anyone struggling, there’s a coach

laid on to pick them up and transport them for the rest of the day so no-one’s left

behind. The biggest surprise that came part-way through the tour was that I was the

first European to take part in the event in its 19-year history. We’ve been missing out on

one of the best-organised cycling events anywhere!

Having completed the East Coast in three days, the West Coast takes up the remaining

6 days, due to a combination of the prevailing winds, a more meandering route and a

couple of days of urban riding, plus an optional diversion into the hills to tackle the

“Taiping 36 Bends” – an 800 metre climb giving lovely views of the Chiayi-Tainan Plain.

Once completed, we’re all carefully marshalled back down and on to our hotel in the

only night-time finish of the tour.The hotels. Superbly chosen by the organisers, it’s probably fair to say that the tour

uses the best hotels (of suRicient size) available at each of our overnight stays. Each

arrival sparks the same routine from the riders – get your room card, grab your luggage,

find the room, shower, wash riding gear in the sink and then go find the spin dryers

which followed us around the island to dry it, hang the gear in your room to finish drying

overnight and by then it’s time for dinner.

The last 3 days of the tour are thankfully fairly flat, with a day spent back on the coast on

day 8 and the final run back on the Keelung River to be welcomed by the same Taiko

drums and a great sense of achievement in completing 9 full days and 1,100km of

riding. Over those 9 days my eyes have been opened to just how friendly and

welcoming the people of Taiwan are and the cycling opportunities the country oRers

(including a 6-day tour to coincide with the 2026 Rotary International Convention).

I can’t finish without a huge thank-you to Louise Wang, President of Rotary Club of

Taipei Lohas Cycling and Fellowship representative for Taiwan. Louise was a huge help

in getting me registered after the cutoR date had passed, advising on hotels in Taipei

and a host of other small things that enabled me to be in the right place at the right time

throughout the tour. Thank you Louise!

“Más Millas, Menos Polio Centroamérica” (“More Miles, Less Polio Central America”) embodies Rotary’s enduring commitment to eradicating polio worldwide. Over eleven remarkable days, this cycling journey united five countries and crossed four borders—covering 1,750 kilometers to raise awareness and support for The Rotary Foundation’s mission to end polio for good.

Led by Nolan, a dedicated Rotarian from San José, Costa Rica, the route connected 20 cities across Central America, transforming every stop into a moment of inspiration, community, and hope. Along the way, riders and supporters amplified Rotary’s message of solidarity and resilience, reminding the world that the fight against polio continues until no child is at risk.

Starting in La Antigua, Guatemala, on September 25 and concluding in Cartago, Costa Rica, on October 5, the journey became a moving symbol of teamwork, perseverance, and purpose—turning every mile into a step toward a polio-free future.

Here comes the updated membership amount of Taiwan Chapter. Total is 24 by now. 

We have a great passion for “cycling to serve”. Since 18 years ago, we have been holding a cycling tour de Taiwan every year for End Polio and charities.

This Nov, it will be our 19th-year cycling tour around Taiwan with 230 Rotary cyclists. Total distance is 1000 KM in 9 days.

In June 2026, Rotary International Convention will be held in Taipei.
Hope you attend this event so that we will meet you in person for friendship exchange.

4 DEPARTURES – 1 DESTINATION

See our goal at World Bicycle Relief

A bicycle tour across Central Europe for a good cause and a clever project – Rotarians from various clubs have joined forces for a rally from May 29th to June 2nd under the motto “4 Days Prague”. They all belong to the global “Fellowship Cycling-to Serve”, a Rotary association of cycling enthusiasts.

18 riders will set off from Aschaffenburg and Paderborn on a tour that will take them to Prague over three to four days with stops in Eisenach, Gera and Most. The bikers meet there for a friendly event. Beforehand, they will complete daily stages of 150 kilometers and climb up to 2,000 meters in altitude.

At the same time, a group of 12 riders will set off from Warsaw to Prague, while a group of 18 riders will also make their way from Salzburg to the Czech capital.
During the trip, the Rotarian bikers collect donations from the local Rotary clubs through whose area they ride. The donations are intended for the “Buffalo Bikes for World Bicycle Relief” project. Buffalo Bikes are high-quality, robust bicycles sold by the non-profit organization World Bicycle Relief (WBR). The core idea of ​​the project is to mobilize people in remote, underdeveloped regions around the world. With a Buffalo Bike, students can get to school more easily, the journey is made easier for tradesmen as well as nurses, social workers and agricultural advisors, who can reach far more clients than before.

Thanks to the donations, bicycles costing 147 euros each will be delivered by WBR to the project countries. WBR is ensuring the installation of a fleet of around 100 bikes in municipalities in the project countries that have applied to participate in the Buffalo Bike project. For this purpose, mechanics who are responsible for spare parts and repairs are trained. The project country for the ongoing Fellowship activities is Zambia.
