It was in the year 2004 that Charles Kramer, a TV producer and his wife Brenna Moore, an interior designer; first visited Kerala.

"My name is Kerala. I am really thankful to be in this school and make new friends,” as the 8-year-old says this, the assembly of students breaks into applause.

Kerala had travelled all the way from Los Angeles with her parents and her younger brother to get a taste of the culture of a state that she was named after.

It was in the year 2004 that Charles Kramer, a TV producer and his wife Brenna Moore, an interior designer; first visited Kerala. It was love at first sight. “We had travelled to many places in India like Delhi, Udaipur and other places. But we fell in love with Kerala. A progressive state with high literacy rate and forward thinking people, Kerala was just different,” says Brenna.

By the time they left the state, it left a deep impression on them. “The hills of Wayanad, the beaches and backwaters, the energy we received from Kerala was positive,’ says Charles.

And so, the couple did not think twice before naming their first born, Kerala, in 2009.

Draped in traditional Indian attire for visiting a temple, Rhodes was all smiles as he performed the puja for his daughter who he named India due to the country’s rich culture and geographical diversity of the country.

Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) issued the below statement after Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) announced that Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, will address a Joint Meeting of Congress on June 8, 2016:

“I applaud Speaker Ryan for inviting Prime Minister Modi to address a Joint Meeting of Congress, and I look forward to welcoming the Prime Minister to the Capitol. This address will serve as a sign of the deep and important relationship between the United States and India. I look forward to hearing from Prime Minister Modi about how we can continue working together to promote peace and prosperity.”

Chairman Royce had sent a letter last week to Speaker Ryan encouraging him to invite Prime Minister Modi to address a Joint Meeting of Congress. Modi will be the fifth Indian Prime Minister to address a Joint Meeting of Congress: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed a Joint Meeting of Congress in 2005.

Residents of Pakistan occupied Kashmir would love to join India: Muslim cleric

Jammu: The chairman of Anjuman Minhaj-e-Rasool, an Islamic organisation working for peace and communal harmony, on Sunday said that if given a chance the residents of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) would love to join the Union of India.

"If a plebiscite is held in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, more than 99 per cent people there would vote to become a part of the Union of India," Anjuman Minhaj-e-Rasool chairman Maulana Syed Athar Dehlavi told reporters here.

Dehlavi, who was in Jammu after a five-day visit to flood affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir, said the separatists in Kashmir has lost their grounds and the people in the Valley are talking about good governance and development.

Fireworks tragedy: Kollam Collector Lambasts Police

Kollam district collector Shainamol said Monday that the fireworks tragedy at Paravoor Puttingal temple happened because of lapse on the part of the part of the police.

Shainamol asked how the police can give permission to the fireworks display when she had denied permission to conduct it.

"The report submitted by the police on April 6 had made it clear that permission should not be given to hold fireworks display due to space constraints..."

100 Dead, Almost 400 Injured, In Huge Fire In South India Temple

A fire and explosions during a fireworks display to mark the start of the local Hindu new year killed 100 people and injured more than 380 at a temple in India’s southern Kerala state on Sunday.

Thousands of devotees had packed into the Puttingal Devi temple, about 70 km from the state capital Thiruvananthapuram in the coastal district of Kollam, to watch the display that started at midnight and went on four hours.

The blaze started when a cracker fell onto a shed where the fireworks were stored, sparking a string of powerful explosions that blew the roof of the administrative block of the temple and caused another building to collapse, residents said.

President Obama gave a shoutout to the beauty of the "backwaters of Kerala" when he visited India last month.

So our intrepid village correspondent in India, Wilbur Sargunaraj, went to make a video about it. Off he went to the southwestern state, whose canals, ocean beaches, mountains and abundant wildlife have put it in the top 10 paradises of the world according to National Geographic Traveler.

Alagarsamy wasn't impressed by President Obama's pledge to improve Internet access in India. The 73-year-old likes to get his news the old-school way: on paper.

Sargunaraj had been to Kerala once before, about 20 years ago, visiting an uncle who lived in a banana plantation. This time, he came as a tourist, sampling the coast and backwaters. "I've heard all my life it's so beautiful," he reports. "It really is gorgeous."
