I have met many facilitators at various workshops and conferences in recent years. Listed below, in alphabetical order, are four that I consider among the best. Each of them has an excellent website and newsletter, as well as books that they have written relating to facilitation. I have taken training workshops from all four and each has influenced my work in a particular way.

The Wisdom is in the Room

In our facilitated activities, I find that the wisdom is in the room! Everyone present has some wisdom and we need everyone’s wisdom to achieve the most positive results. This means that the wisdom does not lie solely with the most vocal, most powerful, highest-ranking or longest-serving participant.

Some individuals feel that, “He who speaks loudest and last wins!” I do my very best to provide opportunities for everyone to share their perspective so every participant can contribute to the desired outcomes.

Collaboration Lives!

With each of my facilitation activities, I am encouraged that there are groups and organizations who believe that collaboration and open exchange of ideas and alternatives is still a great way to go! This may be counter to the current political climate both here in Canada and with our southern neighbours, where it appears that entrenched positions, political “hardball”, and lack of flexibility rule the day.

I encourage participants to be active listeners and provide concise, thoughtful responses. In situations rife with conflict, I remind participants, “If we respect each other’s right to an opinion, even if we do not agree with that opinion, we have come quite a way along the road toward a desired outcome.”
