For too many of our neighbors, an empty bowl is more than a symbol. It represents the uncertainty of not knowing when or where the next meal will come from.

Across Arizona, 1 in 5 children experiences food insecurity, meaning they may not have reliable access to enough food to grow and thrive.

On Tuesday, October 13, Chandler-Gilbert Community College will bring our community together for the 13th annual Empty Bowls event to raise awareness of hunger and inspire action.

With a $15 donation, you can select a beautiful, handcrafted ceramic bowl—each one a unique work of art—and share a simple meal of soup, bread and water. The experience is an opportunity to reflect on what an empty bowl means for people who do not always have enough to eat.

Then, take your bowl home as a lasting reminder that hunger exists in our community—and that each of us can help.

Your $15 donation also provides 36 meals through the food bank at AZCEND, helping neighbors experiencing hunger find nutritious food, practical support and hope for a brighter future.

Meet Jenna Cooper and see how AZCEND is building on 60 years of help and hope.

AZCEND is beginning an important new chapter: our Board of Directors has selected Jenna Cooper to serve as the organization’s next chief executive officer. She will begin her new role on Monday, August 3 as AZCEND celebrates 60 years of bringing help and hope to neighbors in need.

“The board approached this search with great care and a deep sense of responsibility to the people AZCEND serves,” said Alejandro Rios, past president of AZCEND’s Board of Directors. “We conducted an intentional, thoughtful nationwide search for a leader who could build on AZCEND’s strong foundation while preparing the organization for the future. Jenna stood out as the right person to guide AZCEND into its next chapter.”

Leading AZCEND into the future

Jenna joins AZCEND at a meaningful time in the organization’s history. As chief executive officer, she will work closely with the staff and Board to keep essential services strong and responsive while preparing for the community’s changing needs.

She will also strengthen relationships with the donors, volunteers, partners and advocates whose generosity and commitment make AZCEND’s work possible.

“I am joining an organization which has a privileged space in community, providing programs and services to neighbors from all walks of life,” Cooper said. “It is an honor to serve our clients and to continue building a network born out of neighborly compassion. Our mission speaks of a brighter future for our clients, and I’m looking forward to learning from them as we walk side by side in nurturing a brighter organization for decades to come.”

Jenna’s collaborative approach reflects the values that have guided AZCEND for six decades. She recognizes the importance of listening, building trust and bringing people together around a shared purpose.

“Jenna brings the experience, compassion and collaborative leadership AZCEND needs for this important moment,” said the Rev. Sarah Oglesby-Dunegan, president of AZCEND’s Board of Directors. “She understands that we must continue providing dependable help today while thoughtfully preparing for the future. I am confident Jenna will lead with integrity, strengthen trust throughout our community and position AZCEND to serve our neighbors for generations to come.”

Help for today, hope for tomorrow

AZCEND serves children, families, older adults and individuals experiencing hunger, poverty and homelessness in Chandler, Gilbert and surrounding East Valley communities.

Food may be the first reason someone comes to AZCEND, but the support often extends far beyond a meal. Through nourishing food, safe shelter, literacy, friendship and personalized guidance, AZCEND helps people overcome barriers and move toward greater stability, self-sufficiency and a brighter future.

AZCEND enters this leadership transition from a position of strength. The organization is stable, supported by committed staff and community partners, and prepared to continue advancing its mission without interruption.

Recognizing Steve Hewitt’s leadership

AZCEND is also deeply grateful to Steve Hewitt for serving as interim CEO during this period of transition. His passion and leadership provided stability and continuity as the Board conducted its nationwide search.

“We extend our sincere thanks to Steve for his steady leadership during this transition,” Rios said. “His guidance and commitment have helped provide continuity and care for AZCEND during this important period.”

Building on 60 years of service

Since 1966, AZCEND has brought caring people together to help neighbors overcome difficult circumstances. That spirit of community remains at the heart of the organization’s work and will continue to shape its future.

“AZCEND has a proud history of bringing people together to help neighbors overcome difficult circumstances,” Oglesby-Dunegan said. “With Jenna’s leadership and the continued support of our community, we are ready to build on that legacy and begin shaping AZCEND’s next 60 years.”

Opportunities for donors, volunteers, partners and other members of the community to meet Jenna will be announced in the coming months.

AZCEND raises $4,007 as part of nationwide Nourish the American Dream campaign to help end childhood hunger in the Phoenix East Valley

Community support during Albertsons Companies Foundation’s national campaign will help provide meals for local children and families

Chandler, Arizona (July 10, 2026) – Thanks to the generosity of local shoppers and supporters, AZCEND raised $4,007.75 through Albertsons Companies Foundation’s Nourish the American Dream campaign as part of its Nourishing Neighbors initiative, a first-of-its-kind nationwide fundraising effort that surpassed its $5 million goal and generated more than $12.2 million in support for childhood hunger relief across America.

Held July 1-7, the campaign united communities across the country through in-store donations and online giving, helping to provide critical funding for organizations addressing food insecurity at the local level. Every qualifying donation made during the campaign was matched by Albertsons Companies Foundation, amplifying the impact of every dollar raised.

The funds raised by AZCEND will provide meals through food box distribution giving children and families in the Phoenix East Valley access to the nutritious food they need.

Campaign results
  • Amount Raised for AZCEND: $4,007.75 which contributed to the campaign’s national impact of $12.2 million generated in support of childhood hunger relief.
  • Impact: Funds will provide more than 9,600 meals contributing to the campaign’s collective impact of 49 million meals nationwide.
Why it matters

AZCEND provides food boxes, home-delivered meals and lunches every weekday. The organization also offers a lifeline of essential programs and services:

On May 15, 25 children crossed the stage in tiny caps and gowns at AZCEND’s Giggles, Squiggles & Squirms (GSS) graduation celebration.

Families gathered with cameras, applause and happy tears as students celebrated a year of growth, learning and confidence before heading to kindergarten this fall. Thanks to the generosity of AZCEND supporters and partners, these children entered graduation day with stronger skills, greater confidence and a solid foundation for the future.

For Head Teacher Miss Laura, the day is always emotional. “I know that these kids are going to do well,” she shared. “We have put them on the right path.” That path begins long before graduation day.

Giggles, Squiggles & Squirms is AZCEND’s early literacy and kindergarten readiness program for children ages 3–5 and their parents or caregivers. Families attend class together twice each week to build academic, social and emotional skills in a welcoming environment where children can thrive.

Children learn letters, numbers, shapes, colors and early reading skills while also developing confidence, communication and problem-solving abilities. Parents learn alongside them and gain tools they can continue using at home.

“Our focus is to teach the parents how to teach the children at home,” Miss Laura explained. “The kids learn to socialize. They learn how to follow directions. Some of them learn English. The parents learn together with their kids.”

That partnership between children and caregivers is one of the things that makes GSS so powerful.

This year, one student entered the program speaking very little English. Her mother worried about how she would participate in class activities, especially show-and-tell. By the end of the year, the child stood confidently in front of the class and gave a presentation about trees and the environment. Today, she is reading at a first grade level.

Miss Laura credits that growth to the child’s hard work and the consistent support her mother provided at home each week. It also demonstrates the impact donors and community partners make through programs that help children and families learn, grow and thrive together.

Throughout the year, students also explored creativity in hands-on art, storytelling and interactive activities that encouraged self-expression and curiosity. A recent student art showcase transformed the classroom into a colorful gallery inspired by famous artists including Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Picasso and Monet.

“The kids are so happy to see their stuff,” Miss Laura shared with a laugh.

For many children, the biggest transformation happens in their confidence. “At the beginning, many of them are very timid,” Miss Laura said. “By the end of the year, they become comfortable. They really love being here.”

Early childhood education helps children enter kindergarten more prepared academically, socially and emotionally. Programs like GSS help create a strong foundation for long-term success in school and beyond.

This year’s graduating class was the largest in AZCEND’s history, with 25 graduates and nearly 60 students enrolled overall. Growth like this reflects both the increasing need for early childhood education support as well as the heart of a community that believes every child deserves a strong start.

“Every one of these kids has something special to offer the world,” Miss Laura said.

As families celebrated this important milestone together, graduation became a reminder of what is possible when children are surrounded by encouragement, opportunity and a community that believes in their potential.

Programs like Giggles, Squiggles & Squirms are possible because neighbors, donors and community partners continue investing in local children and families.  To help AZCEND continue providing help and hope to neighbors in need through GSS and other life-changing programs, please consider making an annual or monthly gift at azcend.org/now.

In Arizona, rising temperatures are more than uncomfortable. For many of our neighbors, they are dangerous.

Hundreds of lives are lost to extreme heat each year across Maricopa County, with people experiencing homelessness and those without reliable indoor spaces facing the greatest risk.

Our neighbors need more than relief when temperatures climb. They need safety, dignity and a place to belong.

At AZCEND, Heat Relief goes beyond helping people cool down. It creates a space where neighbors feel safe, welcomed and cared for during the most difficult months of the year.

AZCEND opens its doors from May through October as a dedicated daytime respite center. During the hottest stretch of the summer, overnight heat relief is also available. Neighbors can come inside, rest in an air-conditioned environment, enjoy meals and snacks and simply take a breath knowing they are safe.

Ariel Ackerman, AZCEND’s Director of Programs, shared that meaningful impact can start with something simple. “It can look like someone coming in, feeling welcome, feeling safe and getting cool.”

What happens next is where the transformation begins.

A place to rest and a path forward

Last summer, AZCEND’s Heat Relief program provided more than a break from the heat. It created connection, stability and opportunity.

Over the course of the season:

  • 39,576 bottles of water were distributed
  • 8,873 meals were served
  • Snacks, hygiene kits and daily support were provided.

Dozens of neighbors come through the doors each day at peak times seeking relief from the heat. Everyone finds safety at AZCEND, and many discover something more.

Heat relief becomes a gateway to a brighter future. Once people feel safe and cared for, they connect with AZCEND staff, and additional needs are met including help with utility bills, support for mental health recovery, connection to emergency shelter and housing resources. Heat Relief is a starting point from crisis to stability and self-sufficiency.

Ariel describes this process as “peeling back the layers” to uncover what each neighbor needs most.

From surviving to moving forward

Alex’s experience reflects what can happen when someone has access to both safety and consistent support.

He came to AZCEND’s Heat Relief program after experiencing homelessness and facing serious challenges with his health. What began as a place to stay safe during extreme heat became a turning point toward stability. Staff and partners worked together to help him stabilize, reconnect with services and begin building a path forward.

Through ongoing support, Alex was connected to mental health care, housing resources and Veteran services. With that foundation in place, he was able to move into more stable housing and continue working toward his goals.

Today, Alex is living in his own apartment in Chandler and remains committed to maintaining his health and stability. His journey reflects the impact of coordinated care, strong partnerships and the determination of individuals working toward a better future.

His story is one of many. Every summer, neighbors come through AZCEND’s doors facing different challenges, but many are looking for the same thing: a way forward. Heat Relief offers that first step, creating the opportunity for connection, support and lasting change.

A community caring for one another

This work depends on a strong network of people who care deeply for their community.

AZCEND collaborates closely with the City of Chandler, local outreach teams and community partners to ensure neighbors can access the services they need. These efforts help prevent heat-related illness, reduce strain on emergency systems and create opportunities for long-term stability.

That same spirit of care is woven into the program each day. Staff members listen to guests and tailor services to their needs, from improving meals to creating a space that feels welcoming and respectful. What started as simple meal service became something more personal, because dignity matters in every interaction.

If you have ever supported AZCEND, you are part of this story. Thank you for making this work possible.

Because of your support, a neighbor has a place to go when the heat becomes dangerous. A place to rest, to be cared for and to take the next step forward.

Day after day, that support looks like cold water, a shared meal and a space where all are welcomed without question. Over time, those moments can become something more. A conversation. A connection. A path forward.

Help and hope for neighbors in need takes many forms. And as the heat continues, that support will be needed more than ever.

Our community is safer and stronger thanks to you.

How you can help this summer

The need for Heat Relief will grow quickly as temperatures rise. There are simple and meaningful ways to support neighbors during the hottest months:

  1. Donate water or Gatorade: Staying hydrated is critical. Donations of bottled water and small Gatorade bottles help ensure every guest has what they need to stay safe.
  2. Host a hydration drive: Bring your workplace, neighborhood or network together to collect water and drinks. A single drive can support dozens of neighbors each day. Learn more and get started

During Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 19 to 25, we celebrate the people who give their time, energy and care to support our community in ways big and small.

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at AZCEND. Their commitment and compassion help ensure that neighbors across our community are supported with dignity, care and connection every single day.

Last fiscal year, 1,569 volunteers gave 23,291 hours of their time, effort and tender care. That is more than just a number. It represents thousands of acts of kindness, thousands of moments of service and thousands of reminders that no one has to face their challenges alone.

This week, and every week, we are deeply grateful. From food distribution to home delivered meals, volunteers fill essential roles that keep programs running and ensure neighbors receive the support they need.

For Mike, volunteering is about making sure no one is left alone.

“My name is Mike and I work at AZCEND delivering hot meals. Most clients are not able to make their own nutritious meals, and my delivery helps them get better because many are alone. AZCEND can check on them if I let the team know they didn’t answer the door. This is my way to help others.”

Marla began volunteering with the Home Delivered Meals program during a time of urgent need and continues to serve today.

“I began volunteering with the Home Delivered Meals program in April 2020 during the pandemic. The need for this type of service among the elderly and compromised population was at an all-time high. The ability to help meet a need while providing encouragement, reassurance and hope to each participant was unbelievably rewarding. It is the reason I still serve today.”

For Bob, what started as trying something new became years of meaningful service. “I have volunteered in various other capacities and wanted to try a food bank. I have been with AZCEND for nine years. The great personnel and volunteers are what I enjoy.”

For Esther, volunteering is rooted in connection and purpose. “I come from a family where our parents were always volunteering in their community. Volunteering offers a way to meet like-minded people, build new friendships and feel more connected to the local community.”

She describes volunteering as a way to give back while growing personally. “Volunteering means making a positive impact, strengthening community ties and gaining a sense of purpose. It is a way to give back, foster connection, develop new skills and improve personal happiness by contributing to something larger than oneself.”

These voices reflect what we celebrate this week. Volunteers are not just supporting programs. They are building community. They are creating belonging. They are helping neighbors feel seen, supported and valued.

Their impact reaches far beyond the hours they serve.

Whether it is distributing food, delivering meals, supporting events or simply offering a warm welcome, volunteers make it possible for AZCEND to meet growing needs with care and compassion.

“Every volunteer who walks through our doors brings something unique to this work. Whether they give a few hours or volunteer week after week, they are helping create a community where people feel supported, valued and not alone. We are so grateful for the time and heart our volunteers give,” state Nicole Jablonsky, Volunteer Manager at AZCEND.

There are opportunities for everyone to get involved. Whether you are looking to volunteer once, support a special event or commit to an ongoing role, every contribution matters and helps strengthen our community.

To every AZCEND volunteer, thank you. Thank you for the time, effort and care you bring to this work.

If you have been thinking about getting involved, there is always a place for you here.

Join us in celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Week and in carrying that spirit forward all year long. Learn more about volunteering with AZCEND

On April 8, community leaders from across the East Valley gathered for the annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, a morning centered on unity, reflection and shared responsibility for the communities we call home. This year, AZCEND was selected as the beneficiary of the event, a recognition that reflects both the trust of our partners and the growing needs across the region.

Hosted by the Town of Gilbert, the event brought together more than 300 civic, business and faith leaders committed to strengthening the East Valley. Each year, the host city selects a nonprofit partner whose work reflects the spirit of the event. For AZCEND, being chosen carries deep meaning.

“It is a giant honor to be selected,” said Interim CEO Steve Hewitt. “We want to be that nonprofit partner that our cities and towns can rely on when families need support.”

At the event, attendees heard directly from AZCEND through a video message featuring Hewitt and stories from the community.

That partnership is not new. AZCEND works closely with the Town of Gilbert and City of Chandler every day, from providing senior meals and operating family resource centers to supporting rent and utility assistance programs. These collaborations make it possible to meet people where they are and respond quickly when needs arise.

As AZCEND marks its 60th year of service, this recognition is also a reflection of a long history rooted in community. What began in 1966 as a small, church-based food bank has grown into one of the largest nonprofit service providers in the East Valley. Today, AZCEND serves thousands of individuals and families each year through programs that address hunger, housing instability and literacy.

That growth has always been guided by one principle: adapt to meet the moment.

“We have changed with the community over time,” Hewitt shared. “From a small food bank to a full-service organization, we continue to respond to what people need most.”

Right now, those needs are significant. Rising costs for housing, utilities, and basic necessities continue to put pressure on families across the region. In the past year alone, AZCEND distributed more than one million meals and helped prevent nearly 1,300 households from facing eviction or utility shutoff.

Behind those numbers are real people who navigate difficult choices every day.

“Without places like AZCEND, where would those families go?” Hewitt said.

The ability to respond at this scale is only possible because of strong community support. Donors, volunteers and partners all play a role in making this work possible.

“Without them, it is not possible to do what we do,” Hewitt said.

That shared commitment is also reflected in the trust AZCEND has built over time. The organization has consistently earned the Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency and maintains a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator. These recognitions reflect a deep commitment to accountability and to being good stewards of every dollar entrusted to the organization.

“We take that responsibility seriously,” Hewitt said. “Our partners trust us to do the right thing and to show the impact of their support.”

The East Valley Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is ultimately about bringing people together around that shared responsibility. It is a reminder that strong communities are built through connection, collaboration and care for one another.

For those who are new to AZCEND, the message is simple. Help, hope and support are always within reach, and there are many ways to be part of that work. From volunteering and hosting food drives to making a donation or claiming the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit, every action helps strengthen the community.

“It takes a whole community to raise a community,” Hewitt said.

As AZCEND looks ahead, that belief continues to guide the work. The need is real, and so is the opportunity to show up for one another.

April 6, 2026 – Construction at AZCEND began today and is expected to continue through May 1, 2026.

The newly refined spaces will be home to AZCEND’s overnight Heat Relief & Respite program. “I am so excited to be able to offer this service to our community in partnership with the City of Chandler during the summer’s most dangerous months,” stated Ariel Ackerman, Director of Programs at AZCEND. “Something as simple as providing a safe, cool space and some water will have a significant impact on preventing heat-related illnesses and heaths here in Chandler.”

What Guests Need to Do

There will be no changes to services during construction. Please watch for signs as we will use a mobile reception desk for check-in and waiting rooms will vary as construction crews work in multiple spaces throughout the building.

What Volunteers Need to Do

Please continue to serve during your scheduled shifts. Volunteer sign-up, scheduling and check-in remain the same. While on site, be sure to watch for signs as entry ways may vary with construction crews working in multiples spaces throughout the building.

About Heat Relief & Respite at AZCEND

When will heat relief be offered?
Heat relief services will run May 1 through October 31, in line with the countywide heat response efforts.

  • Hours: 9 am – 7 pm
  • Location: Community Room at AZCEND, 345 S California St in Chandler
  • What’s offered: A dedicated indoor, air-conditioned space where people can stay for extended periods. Guests can rest, cool down and access water, meals including breakfast, lunch, snacks and connections to additional services.

When will extended heat relief be offered?
We will offer extended, near 24-hour support during the most dangerous stretch of the summer, typically mid-June through mid-September, when overnight temperatures remain high.

Overnight heat respite details:

  • Location: AZCEND, 345 S California St in Chandler
  • What’s offered: A safe, air-conditioned overnight space with cots and dinner

Extreme heat is a serious health issue here in Arizona, especially for people without reliable access to safe indoor space. This program keeps people stay safe, nourished and hydrated during the hottest months of the year while also creating an opportunity to connect to longer-term support including housing, utility assistance and many additional resources.

AZCEND is proud to once again honor the legacy of Tracey Washington through the Tracey Washington Spirit Award, presented at our annual Spirit of AZCEND Gala.

Tracey served as AZCEND’s Food Bank Manager for 14 years, showing up each day with deep care for the people he served. He believed in meeting people with dignity, listening without judgment and creating a space where everyone felt seen and respected. His impact continues to shape how we serve our community today.

This award was created in his honor to recognize individuals who carry that same spirit forward.

We are seeking nominees who reflect AZCEND’s core values: integrity, compassion, dignity, inclusivity and hope. A nominee is one who gives their time and energy to others, leads with empathy and shows up as a positive and consistent presence in the community.

As you consider who to nominate, think about individuals whose actions make a meaningful difference. Nominees will be considered based on their impact, their commitment to service and the way they uplift others with dignity and care.

We invite you to submit a nomination by Friday, May 1, 2026.
