The Surgeon: this person is extremely thorough, earning them an ‘A star’ for their drying technique. They get into all the cracks like a doctor scrubbing up for surgery and spend a good amount of time making sure every nook and cranny is moisture-free and clear of bacteria. The Surgeon is not afraid to use a second drying cycle to ensure that their hands are completely dry (remembering not all air dryers are equal!).

The Wringer: Imagine how you would wring your hands in worry, that’s this hand dryer. As they remove the water from their hands under the hand dryer, they may appear like an anxious student waiting for their exam results, but it’s an effective way to dry hands. The friction created will remove droplets of water and assist the dryer in doing its job.

The Flicker/The Shaker: There are a few similar styles within this category, but the premise is the same. The person who flicks or shakes the water from their hands ahead of using the hand dryer. Contaminated water droplets end up all over the mirror, basin, walls, and floor etc. While they may be no friend of the bathroom cleaners, in terms of hand drying it’s an effective technique as it removes surplus water before the hand dryer does its job.

The same can’t be said for the bathroom surfaces however, as bacteria from the hands contaminate a wide area.

If this is you, perhaps try and aim for the sink to limit droplets being dispersed around the bathroom – it’s more hygienic and it will make the cleaners’ job easier.

The Paper Waster: This person grabs a massive stack of paper towels and wipes their hands on perhaps 10 per cent of the towels. It may arguably be an effective way to dry the hands, but what about the environment? Every paper towel used ends up in landfill as they can’t be recycled for hygienic purposes.

The Loo Roll Smuggler: A variation on the paper waster theme is this person, who notes a lack of hand drying facilities or the inadequate hand dryer and brings toilet roll out of the cubicle to dry their hands. The result is hands covered in tiny, soggy bits of contaminated toilet paper.

The One with Soggy Trousers: This person partly dries their hands under the dryer and then proceeds to finish them off on their jeans/trousers or other items of clothing using either a dabbing or rubbing motion. Their hands may be dry; however, clothing can become contaminated and can also transfer microbes onto the clean skin, plus it’s an uncomfortable way to spend the rest of the day wearing damp clothes. This user should try another dry cycle to completely rid their hands of water.

The Hair Styler: This person is a rare breed, so extra points if you spot one. They exist mainly in bars and nightclubs and after slightly drying their hands under a dryer they proceed to finish them off on their hair as a styling aid. They may leave the bathroom with not a hair out of place, but their hands could be as dirty as before they washed them.

Hair produces natural oils for protection and can be contaminated with normal skin bacteria including Propionibacterium acnes (the causative agent of acne) and Escherichia coli (a common bacterium which can cause food poisoning, diarrhea, and urinary tract infections).

The Drip-Dry Dodger: This thoughtless person doesn’t dry their hands at all. Wet hands transfer large numbers of bacteria and viruses to all surfaces they come into contact with, and from a hygienic perspective it would be better if they had not washed their hands. If this, is you, it’s time to stop and rethink.

How to Dry Hands Properly After Washing

For a proper hand drying technique:

  1. Keep excess water over the sink instead of shaking it onto surrounding surfaces.
  2. Position both hands in the airflow and follow the dryer manufacturer’s recommended movement.

The flicker/shaker and paper waster may also leave with clean dry hands, preventing microbial contamination by skin transfer to surfaces they contact – but with hygienic and environmental impacts respectively.

“The remaining users, particularly the drip-dry dodger, leave the washroom with improperly dried hands. Their drying styles are unhygienic and could even be described as anti-social.”

How the Airdri Group is engineering for the future

2025 saw the business world dominated by tariff shocks, political instability, supply-chain pressures and relentless cost demands to name a few of the common challenges. However the Airdri Group family of businesses remained resilient throughout 2025, and is approaching 2026 with confidence and optimism. 

With their thoughts on 2025, and 2026 – Airdri Group President and CEO Bruce Philipps, and Chief Operating Officer Stephen Whittall.

2025 was not a straight forward year for businesses. What was it like for the Airdri Group? 

Bruce Philipps: ”The turbulence of 2025 did far more than present operational challenges; it opened the door to new opportunities in a group of businesses that embraces change. 

“The world now moves very fast – so our planning and decision making needs to be ‘continuous’ as an Executive Team. The array of challenges we faced this year has accelerated some of the areas we need to focus on. If we were really honest with ourselves we were taking too long to make some necessary changes to take the company to the next level. 

“A clear example of this is opening our latest production facility in Malaysia. We have been considering this for a number of years but the uncertainty in the global economy meant we had to speed this process up and I’m now really pleased we have some of our products being manufactured in our new state of the art facility in Malaysia as well in China.”

What were the particular product successes in 2025? 

Bruce Philipps: “In engineering and R&D terms, our greatest success this year has been the rapid growth in the Curtain of Light 3D business in the North American market. Our existing as well as new customers have been increasing sales in this important sector because simply put our product is the best on the market from a value, reliability as well as ease of installation perspective. We are intending on investing further in this technology over 2026 as part of an expansion in our R&D team based in Oxford.”

How will you maintain your edge in 2026? 

Bruce Philipps: “The Airdri Group family of businesses – Airdri, manufacturers of energy-efficient hand dryers; Steraspace, innovative sanitizers; and Formula Systems, sector-leading elevator safety technologies are underpinned by engineering excellence, and operational agility. 

“We believe 2026 will reward expertise, speed, sustainability and an unstinting focus on making people’s lives better. 

“Our R&D and engineering division will continue to innovate in power electronics, in particular energy efficiency. US academic research projects will further demonstrate the incredible efficacy of Steraspace air and surface sanitizers, and the transformational impacts on illness prevention and public health.”

“Materials innovation is an area of focus too alongside increased automation. Companies want productivity gains fast, and our expertise is in demand globally. The transatlantic nature of our businesses allows speed of sales, supply, support and more. Our customers – whether purchasing hand dryers or sanitizers or in the elevator safety sector are buying reliability, longevity and technical depth — and sales and support tailored to them.”

How will you meet increasing customer expectations on sustainability and corporate responsibility?

Stephen Whittall:  “We are proud of our sustainability credentials, and we will go further in 2026 through our commitment to the UN Global Compact (UNGC). 

“Customer expectations are rightly high. Distributors and end-user businesses demand faster lead times; robust reporting; information and collaboration on design and lifecycle performance of products. We know that our customers’ commitments to sustainable processes have given them a visible competitive edge – and we are here to support them in that. 

“Accessibility is also front of mind in all we create; whether that is ensuring all Airdri hand dryers are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant straight out of the box; or designing sector-leading elevator safety products or creating air sanitizers designed to improve health outcomes through cleaner air.”

How is 2026 looking from an operational stand point? 

Stephen Whittall: “Supply chain management shaped 2025 and will be a huge part of 2026.

“2025 was the year in which our 50 year experience of agile supply-chain management really paid us and our customers back. We were able to flex, becoming operational in Malaysia ahead of time, and we deepened ties with suppliers. The result for the Airdri Group of businesses is further supply chain resilience heading into 2026.

“Expertise in the real world application of technology will matter in 2026 – especially predictive maintenance and real-time analytics which deliver real, bankable gains for customers.”

Final thoughts on the year ahead?

Bruce Philipps: “Engineering excellence since 1974 – means people. People who are experts in their roles. Experts in engineering, R&D, sales, operations and more.” 

“2026 success for us will depend on talent as much as technology. Engineering is arguably one of the world’s most important industrial sectors. Demand for high-quality, resilient, sustainable engineering is rising globally. Demand for great people will continue in 2026.

“We are looking forward to a number of exciting new announcements in 2026, including marking the 40th year of our working relationship with Bobrick, the world’s leading washroom accessories business. Significant investment in R&D will see us expand our sector-leading teams. We will also grow apprenticeship opportunities. We are excited that the Group, via the Peter Philipps Foundation, will launch a unique partnership with the School of Engineering at one of the world’s leading universities. 

“2026 is set to be one of the most interesting and exciting in our 50plus year history.”

Please share what you covered in your MBA Studies at the South China University of Technology.

“In my MBA studies I consciously constructed a knowledge system focused on ‘enhancing the comprehensive management and transportation of manufacturing enterprises in the context of globalization’. I am particularly focused on the integrated learning of several key modules:

1. With Operation Management as the core: in-depth study of company operation and supply chain optimization aiming to consolidate the hard power foundation of enterprise efficiency and cost.

2. Using Organizational Behavior as an engine: researching how to activate teams, design incentive mechanisms, lead change, solve the problem of ‘people’ in efficiency improvement, and make the system run efficiently.

3. With Brand Innovation and Management as the direction: explore how to transform manufacturing advantages into market brand value and customer loyalty, and find new growth paths for enterprises.

4. Based on Entrepreneurial Ethics: I focused on how to go beyond the role of a ‘factory’ and build sustainable competitive advantages for businesses through responsible operations and brand innovation. All these business practices are based on a sustainable, ethical decision-making framework, ensuring that development is long-term and responsible.

Your favorite parts of the course?

“I liked all courses – most tutors are high-level from different fields. Some of them undertake national projects, some are commissioned by local governments to provide advice on new policies, and some hold positions in enterprises. My favorite courses included Operations Management, Organizational Behavior, Brand Innovation and Management, Entrepreneurial Ethics, and Communication Management.

What was it like to combine working and high-level study?

“This feeling can be summarized as ‘learning in practice, reshaping in learning’. This was a highly condensed and tense life experience. If I use three key phrases to describe it, they are: the ultimate test of physical and mental strength, the rapid construction of systematic thinking, and profound gratitude.

Firstly, it is an honest challenge to personal limits. The previous year and a half I had almost no complete weekends, and I spent every day switching between work and coursework, which indeed made me feel exhausted. Just like driving two high-speed ships at the same time, it requires extreme focus and time management. But this kind of ‘busyness’ and ‘pain’ is precisely the process of instantly applying classroom theory to work practice for verification. The supply chain problems encountered during daytime work may lead to new ideas in operational management cases at night. The confusion of team management suddenly becomes clear in the theory of organizational behaviour. The growth brought about by this cycle of ‘learning and using, learning and using’ is explosive.

Secondly, the greatest happiness comes from the transformation of this ‘pain’. When the theory of human motivation improves the team atmosphere and supply chain management is applied in practice, this joy is not simply acquiring knowledge, but forging a core ability to systematize, structure, and solve complex problems.

Finally, the most precious harvest of this journey is far more than just a diploma. It made me feel the power of support like never before:

·The recognition and motivation that the company has shown me the resonance between hard work and organizational development;

·The unconditional love and tolerance of my family is my most stable backup;

·The friendship that comes from discussing and fighting side by side with classmates late at night is a comradely understanding and support.

“Looking back on this learning experience, the support provided by the company was an indispensable cornerstone for me to successfully complete my studies. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest gratitude. Firstly, it is practical and crucial economic support. The tuition assistance provided by the company has directly relieved me of the biggest worry of pursuing an MBA, allowing me to devote myself to my studies without any worries. I am deeply grateful for this investment.

Secondly, there is spiritual encouragement from the headquarters leadership. What particularly moved me was that every time my colleagues from headquarters visited Guangzhou, they would pay special attention to my learning progress, especially Bruce, Steve, Simon, and Nicki. In a situation where few people in the Guangzhou team were aware, this inquiry from afar gave me a great sense of identification and motivation to persevere. The feeling of being remembered is very precious.

Finally, it is the silent yet powerful support of the team around us. Although I don’t always say what I’m busy with, whenever I need to coordinate time or share work, team members always lend a helping hand without hesitation. Their understanding and responsibility have created a space for me to balance work and studies. These forms of assistance – from funding, to care, to collaboration – together constitute the warmest support system in my journey. I sincerely thank the company, headquarters leaders, and my team, and look forward to applying what I have learned better to my work, repaying this trust and support.”
