There are goals above theta clear: cleared theta clear and operating thetan, but for the present, we'll settle for one person on the bottom of the ladder. Nor need they demonstrate the ability to levitate their car across a police-jammed intersection. In a nation becoming shackled by controls of church and state, and steeped in the belief that we must continually prepare to destroy another segment of the world in order to survive, there is much room for a clear to demonstrate his powers in these channels of government. Or in the educational system. Or the communications field.

Maybe it's the word itself that is jamming up the computing machine. When you "clear" a computer, you don't merely remove the implanted number that's giving you wrong totals, you reduce the entire sum to a starting point of zero. Maybe none of us ever will attain this hypothetical goal until we're ready and willing to erase the whole sum and quit trying to find one or two numbers that we think stand between us and it.

Mr. Hubbard has said himself that our goal is to be nothing -- and that's all we ever can become. Maybe that's why we never see a real, honest-to-God clear -- there's nothing there. As for the pseudotype (quoting from I Corinthians), "God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty".

Due to the high price of coffee, it has been necessary to increase the subscription price of The ABERREE to $1.68 a year. Only by moving away from Phoenix were we able to keep this price increase down to such a minimum.

Miracles still happen! In a report by Rin Tin Tin, giving a play-by-play organizational meeting of the Dianetic Research Foundationts BOG (that's Goard of Bovernors), He, She, or It wrote:

"After dinner Saturday night the Board decided to enter into the discussion of Dianetics vs. Scientology. This discussion lasted for a considerable length of time and all phases of dianetics and Scientology were discussed. (Try it yourself, some time, when you have a few spare after-dinner moments.) The purpose of this discussion was to determine the similarities and differences between the two as they are evaluated by the various individuals of the Board.

"Since dianetics is, by the definition adopted by the Board, 'The study of the potentials of the human being and methods of achieving these potentials', any work that can contribute to the study of Man's potentials may be considered as a part of Dianetics.

"The general consensus of opinion was that Scientology is a continuation of the basic studies inherent in dianetics from its beginning. The difference between dianetics and Scientology is one of terminology and presentation and not one of basic concepts, in the opinion of the Board. The major contributions of Scientology are in the areas of Concept Processing and Creative Processing."

Students of Scientology may be amused at the narrowness of difference placed by the Board's evaluation between Dianetics and Scientology -- but if they remember Hubbard's First Book (Memo to Wichita: His initials are L. Ron) as well as his latest lectures and writings, they'll recognize the place on the Tone Scale of those who insist A equals A equals A equals A.

"Original Thesis" Is Printed Complete in H.A.S. "Journal"

Issue 28-G of the Journal of SCIENTOLOGY carried a full reprint of the book, "Dianetics, the Original Thesis", under the title, "Scientology: A New Science". This should interest newcomers to Scientology as well as "old timers" who "look down their noses" at Dianeticists as "foreigners" and consider them bedfellows of doctors, psychiatrists, etc. This issue of the Journal contains 20 pages and sells for 75 cents, compared to the $3 charged for the original book.

And this might be a good place to explain what the "G" stands for after the issue number of the Journal. Originally, there were supposed to be three classes of the magazine: Medical, designated by the letter "M" and carrying material of interest to the medical profession; Special, symbolized by the letter "S", which would go to special groups; and General, which would cover the entire field of Dianetics and Scientology. The "M" and "S" numbers would be sample "come on" issues, and those who showed enough interest to subscribe would be picked up on the "G" list. The "M" and "S" issues never have materialized.

ting the contract to a civilian organization to provide meals for this training center. Not only will they furnish the meals, but there'll be civilian service for officers AND enlisted men, with no dishes to wash, no floors to scrub, no sloppy tables to "G.I."

It's an economy measure. It was discovered that an outside firm could provide better meals at less expense than the Air Base itself. Which merely points up the inefficiency of a military organization. With hundreds of men idle most of the time, serving out a sentence in preparation for a war the top politicians may not be able to maneuver us into in spite of their frantic efforts, it seems strange that cooks, waiters, dish washers, etc., can be hired, food prepared and served--at a profit for some civilian firm--cheaper than the Government can do it.

Yet there have been parallel instances in the past. On Operation Crossroads, the Bikini atomic bomb experiments of 1946, more than $100,000,000 was spent to detonate and photograph two atomic bombs. A better job could have been done for one-tenth of this sum by even one of the "B" picture companies from Hollywood. It was no secret among military personnel that the pictures made by the Army Air Force of the A-blasts in 1946 and the preparations for it were far inferior to pre-explosion pictures made by a newsreel company.

In the name of economy--if the administration REALLY is interested in lightening the tax burden--maybe somebody will come up with the idea of fighting the next war by contract: give the contract to win the war to a low-bidding civilian firm and let them make the plans and hire needed personnel. It's certain experienced gunners wouldn't be pounding typewriters, typists picking up twigs and cigaret butts off the grass in the "Officers' Quarters", and cooks and dish washers operating the armament.

Besides, if it were a game as well as a job--instead of enforced servitude under incompetent rank-happies--winning a war might be fun.

Volney Offers E-Meter for Unresponsive Indian

Claims by two Oklahoma state officials that Indians are so "stoic" they would not react to lie detector tests have been challenged by Volney Mathison, inventor of the Mathison electropsychometer.

Mathison, after reading the report in the July-August issue of The ABERREE that Dr. W. H. Donahue, director of Oklahoma Mental Health, and 0. K. Bivens, State Crime Bureau director, "found" full-blooded Indians "showed absolutely no reaction" when tested on lie detector, promised to give them an E-400-A instrument "if they will send me one Indian who will not register on this instrument."

Mathison added that he wanted a live Indian, who could understand English -- not the old wooden Indian that used to be standard cigar store equipment.

Mathison said there are several full blooded Indians in his employ, and before each is hired he is given an assessment. All register very sharply.

Second Southeastern Meeting Will Be Held in Atlanta, Ga.

The second annual Southeastern Dianetic Conference will be held in Atlanta, Ga., August 21 and 22, Ernest P. Pope, chairman, reports.

This year's conference will be built around the theme: "Applying Dianetics and Scientology in Everyday Life". Among the speakers will be Alberta Elliott and Paul Metcalf, with several others still to be heard from. In addition to the speakers, short tapes will be played from persons prominent in the field unable to attend.

The conference starts Saturday morning, with preliminary discussions Friday night. It will end shortly after noon Sunday, according to Pope.

Marjorie Sapp is secretary of the conference.

Ron Outlines Each Step for Auditors in new "Handbook"

Anyone confused with how to use the new procedures should have much of that confusion erased with a new book, "The Auditor's Handbook", by L. Ron Hubbard. The book includes an outline of "Intensive Procedure".

In the Handbook, Ron lists each step for any case level, and then shows in detail how to run each step, including some of the auditor's patter. Although the book is mimeographed and contains only 25 pages, it's almost a "must" for the auditor, whether he's a Clinical Course graduate or not, and as a source of data, is a bargain at... Since the price is part of the book, and the book is copyrighted, and no part of the book may be reproduced, we can only say that the price is less than $2.86.

Wichita Foundation Shut; Don Aims for New "Utopia"

The Dianetic Foundation of Wichita, Kas., has wriggled its last toe! Even the partitions in the building at 211 West Douglas, which cubicled offices, class rooms, and auditing rooms, are be ing torn out and the material will be used in the construction of homes.

Don G. Purcell, from whom L. Ron Hubbard split early in 1953 -- allegedly over the researches from which evolved Scientology -- revealed to Ye Ed last week that he has offered Ron the return of all Dianetic books, records, mailing lists, and even "the copyrights over which Ron and The Foundation have been in dispute."

Hubbard's acceptance of the gesture, Purcell said, was immediate, and the former partners have been in daily communication ever since the offer was made.

This does not mean, Purcell said, that he is giving up research into means for the betterment of man, but merely that he is transferring his allegiance from Dianetics to Art Coulter M.D.'s "Synergetics". They are embarking on what they call "Project Nucleus", "the creation of optimum individuals who, in turn, will be the nucleus for an optimum community". Purcell said they hope to avoid the errors and pitfalls which have beset other utopias in the past by preparing the personnel in advance.

The new project, Purcell said, has no financial goal, and processing will be on a free rather than a fee basis. He added that the only qualifications for membership is that the applicant be human -- regardless of creed, race, or color -- and they "might even accept animals if they're smart enough to understand".

No decision has been made as to what will be done with the Foundation's publication, "Dianetics Today", now in suspension.

25 Taking Clinical Course Given by Horner in London.

The Advanced Clinical Course opened in London the first week in September with an enrollment of 24 students, Jack Horner, D.Scn., reports. Dr. Horner, who is conducting the courses, uses both tapes of L. Ron Hubbard and live lectures to present the newest data to "train auditors who know what they are doing and how they are doing it with certainty".

At the first London Congress given shortly after Dr. Horner's arrival, more than 125 were in attendance, and double this number is expected for the second Congress, Dr. Horner said.

In an announcement that will come to few as startling or necessary, Art Coulter, M.D., of Worthington, Ohio, has announced his complete withdrawal from dianetics.

This follows within only a few months his resignation from the Dianetic Foundation in Wichita and the organizing of what he calls a "new science" under the tentative label of "Synergetics".

(Dr. Coulter's most recent definition of Synergetics: "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours", which sounds similar to the type of therapy we've seen monkeys practicing in the zoo.)

Dr. Art's statement follows:

"In the interests of harmony and as a gesture of good will, among other reasons, I have decided to withdraw from dianetics.

"Please notify all concerned of the following:

"1. That Analytical Procedure should no longer be regarded as a 'dianetic' approach, but rather as a part of synergetics.

"2. That while there is no restriction on its free use by anyone, the use of Analytical Procedure by anyone charging a fee for processing is not authorized.

"3. That the path of synergetics and the synergetic movement will henceforth finally, completely, and irrevocably be away from dianetics and the dianetic movement."

NOBODY EVER TRIED IT

DURING the last four and a half years, I've heard a lot of "bull" about what is wrong with Dianetics--and lately, Scientology. Some, from people who should have known better.

But the main item has been missed completely. The big trouble with Dianetics is that nobody ever tried it!

It's true that there may have been a half-dozen conscientious auditors who tried to get Hubbard's real data from the first book, but most of them used "The Modern Science of Mental Health" as a springboard to dramatize their own engrams and sympathy exciters, or to prove some crackpot theory they already had.

It was a jolt in 1950 to see a graduate of the first Elizabeth Foundation school practicing a type of auditing that "The Book" warned against time and again--and from correspondence with other graduates, it appeared that the technique was being taught. This also was true with other so-called schools: California, Wichita, etc., as well as the groups.

All programs were aimed at ignoring the most important tenets of Hubbard's first book and substituting every kind of screwball substitute --from E-Therapy and self-hypnosis to the nonsense scattered from centers of idiocy in Colorado, Alabama, Florida, Washington and elsewhere. Seeing supposedly long-term, fast friends of Ron's turn to the enemy for money, and later come back hypocritically contrite has only intensified my dislike for people who ignore data, and then blame Ron for the miserable failures attendant upon their efforts.

If the first book was ignored, still less attention was given to what may yet prove to be THE classic work: "Advanced Procedures and Axioms". Even Hubbard has rejected both of these works by implication, which might serve to validate F. Scott Fitzgerald's statement that writing and works of art transcend their creators' own understanding of them.

"Advanced Procedures" brought clear light and understanding to mankind's greatest mystery and suggested a means of solving that mystery. But it was used as a springboard to dramatize what was called "the service facsimile chain", and instead of following Ron's basic advice to always use light techniques on low-toned preclears, the heaviest stuff possible was run by screwballs looking for blueprints on how to make a bap gun instead of how to get a preclear out of an engram he was stuck in.

As a result, many calling themselves "Dianeticists" got only the results they should have expected, yet they used their own failures to "prove" Hubbard was wrong--that his techniques didn't work.

Now we have the recent "Auditor's Handbook and Intensive Procedure", which stands with the first two as a major work on mental--or, if you prefer it, spiritual therapy.

This book is a full package, as were the first two. This book, if followed carefully, will produce the miraculous betterments in health and mind that Ron always has extravagantly claimed for all of his techniques.

But it has the same pitfall as the other two--the same "bugger factor" that auditors en masse used to nullify the preceding books.

Ron again has taken it for granted that auditors will follow his instructions and audit according to the outlines of Dianetics and Scientology already given. He has assumed that the stuff will be used with a modicum of horse sense.

Well, let's hope so. But

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

WE'VE known Bob Arentz nearly 3 years, and in that time have discovered he can get "madder" at L. Ron Hubbard than any one we know. Also, he can express his anger most convincingly, as many of the H.A.S. staff will testify.

Therefore, it was with crossed fingers that we agreed to let him write a review on Hubbard's new "Auditor's Handbook". We liked the book, and wanted no vitriolic pen taking it apart. Besides, Uncle Sam is somewhat of a minacious guardian of the mails' purity.

But Bob fooled us. And in the light of the Dianetic-Scientology reunion, Bob may have a point. In fact, he may have several points in a "review" that's as long as this one is.

DIANETICS ABANDONS ILLS AND ENGRAMS AS GOAL OF PROCESSING

Dianetics, as a psychotherapy, is no more. Instead, it was announced non-surprisingly at the "Unification Congress" held in Phoenix December 28-31, that Dianetics, like Scientology, henceforth will concern itself only with the study and understanding of man.

"Unification", or the adoption by Dianetics of the goals and aims of Scientology, took up only the first few minutes of the opening lecture. From then on, emphasis, both in lectures and in group auditing, was on the value of two-way communication, especially between the auditor and his pre-clear.

Although no exact figures were given out, it was estimated that about 200--including students and members of the HASI staff--enrolled for the Congress. This is slightly larger than attendance at the June Congress.

Some of the talks were given by Ron, but the majority were by Dr. Hubbard.

In outlining the future scope of Dianetics, Hubbard traced the reception given

Second Enid Conference On Feb. 12-13

The second Mid-western Conference on Dianetics and Scientology will be held in Enid on Saturday and Sunday, February 12 and 13, Norman Fritz, chairman, has announced.

Emphasis will be placed on processing, both group and individual, with only a small part of the program allotted to discussions.

Several persons who attended the "Unification Congress" in Phoenix in December will be present to discuss the lectures and group processing of L. Ron Hubbard. This should bring persons in this area who were unable to attend the Phoenix Congress up-to-date on the dovetailing of Dianetics and Scientology.

the first book in 1950, and said that this book is about to become HASI property because of the royalties accumulated from continuing sales. When possible, he said, the book will be revised and reissued.

Ron said that the road to freedom, and out of a policed universe, was not followed by looking at one disability after another -- such as psychosomatic ills -- but at ability. Research, he said, is not completed, as there's no wrapper with which to wrap it up. "There is no ceiling on research into ability," he added.

However, he said that just because they have a new book doesn't mean that the old data is being discarded. Today, a "clear" and "theta exterior" mean the same thing, but the goal now is obtained without the erasure of engrams.

"We've found that the thing that produced the facsimiles can be taught to handle barriers," he said, "and when he does, he becomes a clear." The longest processing on record with the new techniques, he declared, was 150 hours, and he compared it to what could have been expected back in the days when Book One was all we had.

Taking up the subject of communication, Ron traced the development of the A.R.C. (Affinity-Reality-Communication) triangle which he conceived in 1950 while he was being audited. This triangle, he said, is even more important today than it was then, and one part of the triangle cannot operate without the other.

Communication, he said, is the most important point of the triangle, but nothing can happen when one of the three points is missing.

Com. lag, he said, is technical, and could be called an agreement lag. A com. lag is the time between the posing of a problem or statement and a direct answer. A "social reply", in which the person addressed merely makes a polite response, does not count.

Persons who like only those they've known for a long time have an affinity lag.

A reality lag is a judicious decision from one who's always waiting to find out what it's all about before he commits himself. This person, Ron said, "is crazy".

All three -- communication, affinity, and reality -- must be instantaneous in order to obtain no time lag in reaction.

He pointed out that combat pilots have more accidents because they've been taught to hate, and have little, if any, affinity. That's also why military equipment is so difficult to maintain.

If a person is cold and calculating, affinity is missing, Ron said; then, so is reality, and therefore, he can make no sane decisions.

A contract, Ron declared, seeks to continue agreements without further communication, and that's why most contracts -- especially if they're in force too long -- wind up in courts.

Citizenship, he pointed out, is a contract between the State and the individual. Criminality is an abrogation of the citizenship contract, and if we made an effort to communicate with the criminal, instead of putting him in a cell and out of communication, the results would be more favorable to society.

"If you cut all lines to the body, you'd probably have no memory at all," Ron said, "because memory is an effort to communicate with the past. This is the facsimile, the engram. An effort to break communication with the past is what makes one bad off. Freud's idea was that one can be helped by getting him in communication with the past.

"People consider memory of the past THE thing, and become fixated on the terminal they want to communicate with. This is because

The ABERREE, like other human agencies, can err. It also can make mistakes. Furthermore, it can be wrong. But there the similarity with the other human agencies ceases. We, when wrong, are willing to admit, and lend space to correct our sins. So, we admit the following:

1. Scientology does NOT wear a sable coat. Instead, Doctors of Scientology are uniformed like "Black V's", and adorn their bosoms with fancy bullet shields, or breast-plates, suspended on strings from around their necks.

The reason for the bullet shields is obvious. A "theta clear", Ron demonstrated, is one who has had his brains blown out with a .45. A polished breastplate is more washable after this operation than a white shirt.

2. So, we'd like to apologize to those who have insisted over the last few years that they were theta clears. We didn't know.

boils are not arbitrary associations made up by..the analysts; they have been rioted again and again by different analysts under a variety of conditions. Not only this, they have been proved experimentally. One experiment consisted of placing a person in deep hypnosis and ordering him to dream of sexual activities.

The subject then reported the dream to a psychoanalyst, who observed the very same sexual symbols he had repeatedly observed in his practise. The existence of these symbols may be taken as.a scientifically proved fact.

The second is that a predominant feature of the dream -- one that enables it to be understood very simply in obscure parts -- .is that of wish-fulfillment. The contents of the dream time and time again are observed to be the disguised fulfillment of repressed wishes.

It is impossible to give a really adequate account of dream interpretation in this short space; for this the reader should consult Freud's writings..: When he does this, I believe he will have a wonderful surprise. One can easily understand how he has revolutionized our ideas about human nature, created order out'of chaos in psychiatry, and shaken the . intellectual world.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ABILITY 'MAJOR' AND 'MINOR' DISCOVERED

When the H.A.S.I. wants to make criminals of one or two persons -- such, as, an ed itor or two -- they do it with ABILITYs MINOR. But when they launch a, broadside, they use the ABILITYs MAJOR.` (Anyone else wonder what the difference was between the two -- other than the price?) In ABILITY MAJOR II, it was announced that all the rights of the CADA (California Association of Dianetic Auditors) were being cancelled by Dianetics' sole proprietor -- the HDRF -- because they were "intensely antipathetic to free use of Dianetics", and that the HDRF would take steps through the California Secretary of State to see that the CADA did not have the "free 'use of Dianetics". It also was charged that the California organization had been secretly backing legislation in California that would make it illegal for 'auditors to audit.

Especially censured were A.F. Van Vogt, Wayne Dunbar, and Andy Anderson, who have been teaching, practicing, writing about, and recommending the use of Dianetics almost since L. Ron Hubbard first shook the foundations of the medical and religious world with his "discovery" back in 1950.' But it just ain't so, L. 0. Anderson, editor of the CADA BULLETIN and one ' of the organization's directors, says.. In a letter to The ABERREE, "Andy" made the following public statement: "It goes without saying that the ABILITY article 'is canpletely erroneous and misleading. We have no intention of disbanding, in fact, we are -'stronger than we have ever been -- and we've actually: gained new members as a resuit of the ABILITY. article. Hubbard and the WI,. or HDRF are obviously: in no position to dissolve the CADA, anymore than the CADA would be:in.a position. to dissolve. the HDRF. In regard to the legislation, the ABILITY article prosen-, ted. a complete..reversal. of the_ facts involved. This is als -- and very obviously. -- true . in regard to the state -- merit that we are .antipathetic to the use of free dianetics. "In fact, there is too much nonsense in the arts.

"Two of the comments in the last Aberree, by Ikey Stone and Williams, are a good example of the main reason why old-fashioned Dianetics did not work for some people. There are too many people who can not read or understand directions. Both Stone and Williams believe that the Zeman circuit changes when an individual is left-handed. For the single circuit it does not change at all. The essence of the relaxation circuit is the connection of positive to negative. With any indivfddual, regardless of handedness, the head and right hand are of one sign, while the left hand and ba$eofthe spine are of the other sign. Consequently, regardless of handedness, the right hand is connected to the base of tthhee spine and the left to the head. What the signs axe becomes important only when connecting two people together.

"When Ikey Stone got the results she did with the relaxation circuit, and from her report did not try the tension circuit, it becomes likely that she may have some glandular condition interfering. If this is the case, the individual can relax only in the tension circuit, until there has been enough change in the glandular condition for the individual to respond in normal fashion. It would pay her to read the parts of the book that she apparently skipped.

"Book 1" Warning and Scientology

IF NOTHING else demonstrated Hubbard's genius that part of the "First Book" would, wherein he delineates the factors that made Scientology the inevitable end result of Dianetics. This was probably the most completely misunderstood element in the Dianetic theory. Although Hubbard repeatedly emphasized the secret ally computation, and the demon circuit that "protected" it, and warned that the pre-clear would do anything to avoid giving up the clue to the ally, i.e.: the "secret phrase", the point was missed.

Also missing it was Ron Hubbard himself, who should have recognized the working of the demon that drove him to denounce his own data in the First Book and led him from his original goals into a thousand bypaths.

Yet he had pointed out repeatedly that a pre-clear will "do anything" to avoid running out an ally computation (even to the extent of "inventing" new sciences to keep from destroying the demons) or, if lacking inventiveness, will join cults of all kinds provided they reject the auditing that threatened the demon, or the ally, and also provide some patty-caking technique to rationalize the evasion.

Thus we have the half dozen or so "cults" that have caught up the once daring explorers of Dianetics.

Time and time again, in Book One, Hubbard warned against being misled into these deadends; he even warned against the major side track of all -- his own "Scientology creed" -- by stating clearly and in detail that one of the workings of a demon circuit is the illusion that the pre-clear is outside his body looking on. (See Pages 256, 276, and 320 in "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health"). At this point, Hubbard said, you have to take stock of the situation, recognize that a heavy fear charge is at hand, and realize that before a pre-clear can run this fear, the circuit protecting the ally must be broken.

(Author's NOTE -- This is based on Agnes Allen's Law, that "Almost anything is easier to get into than to get out of.")

To protect the ally, Hubbard said, a preclear will do anything -- and one thing readily done was to give up the somatic in restimulation, thus "pretending" achievement, and six months later turning up with a substitute for which Dianetics was then blamed as the preclear joined up with whatever cult suited his fancy.

Even lifelong migraine headaches will be discarded in a minute by a pre-clear brought close to the ally computation that caused the migraine, and the most bitter denunciations of Dianetics and Hubbard have been made by those persons who had to give up a pet sympathy exciter, like this, rather than run out the ally computation upon which it was locked -- justifying this a few months later by blaming all their troubles on you-know-who.

Even Ron Hubbard did this sort of thing -- though not being prone to self blame, he seemed to prefer blaming his Dianetic cohorts.

Today, the auditor who knows his background on allies and demon circuits can take modern "Scientology" straight wire and really get results cleaning up the messes made by childhood allies in everyone's life.

What is known as Waterloo Station has been used by some book auditors for years with great success and "differentiation" was one of the salient points missed, though clearly stated, in ol' Book One.

It's heartening to realize that the genius for discovery overrode the shying wild horse in Hubbard's makeup that fled in panic from the spooky images of the demon circuit and the ally computation, and that after four years of sashaying all over creation, we are now right back where we started ng straight wire and lock scanning techniquues of exquisite simplicity that are aimed directly at breaking up and clearing out the circuitry and the allies by which Dianetics became hoist on its own petard in the closing days of 1950.

The essence of exteriorization is that when a demon is at work there is no responsibility for the pre-clear's make-up. Groups driven by demons will give themselves over to exteriorization and make the auditor fully responsible. This is patty-caking in its ultimate form -- giving your control to a figurehead; taking all directions from an elected source of wisdom. "Doing as you are told" is one of the main demons, whether the director is Ron Hubbard, Ron Howes, Jim Welgos, Major Fleet, Father Divine, or "Uncle Goston".

Running these "no responsibility" cases is a waste of time for all auditors except those who (as Jim Schmitz pointed out in GALAXY Magazine and for which I wish to thank him) take delight and profit from providing illusions for people hungry for them.

On the other hand, those rare individuals who take responsibility for exteriorization can be run profitably by Route One techniques, but it's a wild and wooly affair and not one person in 500 had guts enough five years ago to plow into the demon circuits and chew up the ally computations so clearly outlined in Book One...Hubbard included.

This lack of courage and determination by both auditors and pre-clears produced a spate of 25- to 50-hour "miracle" cures that didn't last. A migraine case could skirt the terror on an ally connected with the syndrome, promptly drop the migraine in preference to giving up the ally, and come back a few months later with the migraine back, or a substitute for it well developed in the form of ulcers, arthritis, or membership in a screwball cult.

Why? Very simple. Because leaving the demon hooked up, and the ally kept secret, the emotional need to be sick is still in power, and as long as the emotional need is there the physical manifestation will follow in one guise or another -- wherever the pre-clear goes, be it in Scientology, Humanics, Human Engineering, Lifting - Yourself-by-Your-own-B o o t- Straps, Flapping your Ears, or Being a Theta Clear, and you cannot run a demon or an ally out without unloading the emotional charge in the first place, thus eliminating that basic need to be sick, or crazy.

However, after a four-year side track, we are back hammering at the citadel wherein the ally hides, and the good old lock scanning, straight wire techniques of Dianetics (now called Scientology for some strange reason) are aimed with telling force at the web of circuitry and its mantle of fear and terror, that spooked so many off before.

Apropos of nothing, Texas is one of the 48 States. But don't tell a Texan that.

The nations of earth are now passing through their stage of adolescence. Freedom has much to do with this terrible time. Liberty Is Involved. Because even when one Is right he must be 'at liberty' In being right. The 'teen-ager rebels at his 'correct teachings'; then, after rebelling, he decides 'for himself' that It is best to be a good (average) citizen. When he has made the decision for himself, he feels that Is Is all right for him to follow 'correct teachings'. The law of liberty Is Involved here. The same will be true of nations.

I enjoy your magazine as much as ever although I agree with a part of it only. "Things have been up and down in New York with regards to Scientology. For awhile there were three active groups. Then activity slowly faded until there was virtually nothing being done. There have always been Individuals who have continued to do fine work. Withiin the last month the church has cone alive again on an active basis. Lyle Sudrow has been handling most of the Sunday evening services and has done a slam bang job. In several weeks, the Church will run a Personal Efficiency Course with before and after testing. The processing time will be five two-hour sessions. A group of 30 is anticipated and since I intend to be one, I will see if I can't get the before and after results. If the first run proves successful, the P.E.C. may be continued at the rate of one a month. At this writing, it is contemplated that there will be no charge.

"I have been taking a course in testing this summer. Rather hesitantly, the professor proposed that the IQ is not constant. He Indicated that some of the latest research would seem to indicate that many test scores are not valid due to:

"1. Incorrect Administration and Correction,
"2. Language difficulty on a Written or Verbal Test,
"3. Development Idiosyncrasies (physical),
"4. Emotional Difficulties.

"An example cited was a little English girl who was brought here during World War II. Several days after she arrived she was tested and scored 90. When retested five months later she scored 122. My professor claimed the first score was not a valid one. I claimed that It was and that it was an Indication of the child's ability at the time. I also said that the 122 was also valid as a criterion of her ability at the time she took the second test. Obviously her separation from her parents and other problems of a situation (No. 4) had been to a degree resolved. After a short while, I became aware that we were talking about different things. My professor considered IQ as a measure of potential ability while I meant it to mean measured ability at a given moment! It would seem to me that whatever an IQ test measures, it Is subject to change rather sharply In areas Nos. 3 and 4. A 'Sort of History' of Dianetics

PART IV

ED. NOTE -— Dianetics is still a baby, years wise, yet in less than a decade, it has stirred up a lot of contention, picked up many followers, and at the same time, wade many foes, some of whom were "stars" in the early days of the movement. Why? this series of articles is one auditor's opinion of what happened to Dianetics, sostly before it becase Scientology, but if anyone wishes to add their own views on the subject, they are invited to do so. All we ask is: Try to keep it as historical and "factual" as human aberration will permit.

ONE OF EARLY Dianetic's respected figures has written an impelling challenge to my thesis that Hubbard was right and the first book was a factual account of what drives people crazy and makes them sick. My correspondent said, in effect: "How do you account for the failure of 'successful' auditing cures to last? The despair of psychoanalysis and psychiatry is the individual who seems to respond to treatment, and then after a couple of years, drops right back into the same old hectic, destructive dramatizations that are killing him -- and Dianetics encountered the same failures."

This statement is a thumbnail digest of the reasons this man, and many other Dianetic auditors of 1950, have now turned their backs on Ron Hubbard and his book, "The Modern Science of Mental Health", which once gave them hope and inspiration. The question deserves an answer.

I, too, have seen the "miraculous" remission and subsequent return of chronic ailments, of all kinds. A classic case in Idaho that comes to mind was overnight recovery from a long-standing case of migraine headache, where the pre-clear had already spent much money on conventional treatments without avail. One day this person was a semi-invalid, the next day O.K. Two 'ears later, it came back as rapidly as it had gone away.

Both auditorandpre-clear are known to this writer. The "case" is a solid 1.5, with a full emotion shut-off. The engram ran was a simple lock incident without pain but heavy emotion at time of pick-up --and clearly remembered. The pre-clear had tried to dodge the session, and was violently ill thruout. Then slept soundly, to wake up "cured".

It came back after failure to control an aggravating sittation and suppression of that old "urge to kill".

What happened? Nothing mysterious to anyone familiar with the meat of the first book. The session described was no cure at all--not even an engrain "run"-- but, rather, was only what Hubbard calls the key-out of an engram in restimulation. Merely the first steps had been taken. But that was the end of the auditing. Both auditor and preclear went around waving banners and the real villain just kept on laying low. The cause had not been touched. More important, the emotional reasons for the use of such a sympathy exciter were unresolved. The lock session had brought nearly to the surface the emotional need to be ill. Fifty hours of the heaviest kind of going might have sufficed thereafter tp break into this occluded emotional bank, and gotten at the real cause involved. A hidden ally was about to be exposed, and to protect the ally computation, the psychosomatic illness was released-- temporarily. They quit there.

But the basic losses were intact, and bound in with repressed emotion or, as Hubbard described it --the glue that sticks engrams together. Hubbard says that when you get the first break, then doubled efforts are needed to get at the real WHY. But nobody ever does this; everyone is too busy sitting around crowing about the half-way point, or spinning in a hectic whirl of effort bordering on panic because Good Old Reliable has disappeared overnight and the world must be faced without it.

Now, IF— and this is the big "if" of Dianetics--the auditor and pre-clear had used this first stage as a starting point to attack the congealed and in:acted emotion, routing out along the way the loss of the ally, and aheadof that the formulation of the ally computation, exactly as charted on Hubbard's detailed map of the engram bank, there'd have been some real results, and some fantastic fireworks along the way--explosions all over the place, auditor with a black eye, preclear with some busted teeth and other concomitants of a good old knock-down-and- drag-out; but the hidden ally would have surfaced, the emotional need to be sick would have released with the pent-up emotion, and the so-called"cure"would have been permanent.

How you get a person to blow this emotional charge without a fight, I don't know; but you can't knock an ally out of the bank with any patty-caking auditing techniques, or the psychiatrist's pet stunt of bapping the victim with electric shock the first time a patient goes wild
