19th century knight

Originally published way back in 1989, Gotham by Gaslight was a watershed book for DC Comics’ Elseworlds line. If you don’t know what that was, it was basically DC’s ‘alternate reality’ imprint, like a series of what-if’s. It had some incredible titles too, including Red Rain.

Again though, Gotham by Gaslight was right there with the best of them.

Taking place in the 19th century, Gotham by Gaslight depicts Batman’s debut just as Jack the Ripper arrives in Gotham City. Working with Inspector Gordon, Batman discovers the identity of the Ripper and uncovers the truth behind his parent’s death.

Mezco Toyz

Pretty cool, huh? But as great as it was, there haven’t been very many collectibles to come out of it. Though you might not need more than the figure that Mezco is about to unleash.

Joining the One:12 Collective in the first quarter of 2022, is Batman himself, and you better believe he’s a doozy. This Bat is absolutely packed with gear, and sports the usual excellent articulation and sculpting that the One:12 is known for.

The only true justice

Former District Attorney Harvey Dent is one of Batman’s more interesting foes, and one that doesn’t get as much recognition as he used to. Dent’s alter ego Two-Face is also one of the Dark Knight’s most visually striking villains too, and has been seen in the comics, on TV, and even in a few feature films and video games.

The look that Mezco has chosen to base their figure on is the most recent comic book version, a red and black suit. Personally, I was hoping for the Batman: The Animated Series black & white version, but it’s tough to argue with this figure (and you never know what variants might be coming).

This figure is absolutely loaded, packed with weaponry, effects pieces, extra hands, and heads galore. This is seemingly as ‘deluxe’ as a Two-Face figure could possibly get. You can even make a bandaged up version of his face, or give him back his original, healed face. As you might’ve imagined, Harvey’s signature two-headed coin is included as well.

Splitting skulls

Conan is a classic hero, with loads of history behind him. The northern barbarian flat out stars in some of the most celebrated fantasy stories of all time. While he was created by Robert E Howard decades ago, Conan remains a fan favorite today, thanks to numerous comics and reprinting of the original novels.

He’s been getting a little more attention than usual lately too, and that includes in the action figure arena. Figures based on the 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger movie are in pre-release, and maybe the coolest take yet is too.

Coming out of Mezco’s fantastic One:12 Collective line, this 6″ figure is modeled after the most iconic form of the warrior. That’s right, it’s based on Frank Frazetta’s classic painting ‘The Barbarian’.

Packing a ton of accessories, the One:12’s excellent articulation, and some of what looks to be top notch sculpting, Conan is available here for pre-order. He’s set to ship out in the August to October timeframe and will run you a slightly higher than usual $90 USD.

Get Tactical

The DC movie universe seems to finally be catching on with fans. Wonder Woman and Aquaman were legit hits, Shazam is getting great reviews, and there’s a good deal of excitement around the next Suicide Squad film. But while now might be a good time to be a fan, in the recent past there was Justice League.

A strange mixture of directors Zach Snyder and Joss Whedon, Justice League was a… I was going to say “stumble”, but it was more of a crippling fall. A disjointed story, bizarre choices like never showing Darkseid, and that brutal Superman CGI all led to something that really no one enjoyed. But it wasn’t all bad. Even fervent detractors would have to admit there were some cool things to come out of it.

Chiefly among those were the Bat-vehicles. The Nightcrawler and Flying Fox were slick, and the tactical suit was a nice alternate look for the Dark Knight. It straddled the line between the staple “movie” suit and a more armored look.

And as far as action figure adaptations of it go, Mezco’s is spot-on. Though whether or not that makes it worth your dollar is entirely up to you.

Build Quality

There isn’t much to say here that’d be different from all of the other One:12 Collective basically figure reviews we’ve run. If you’re familiar with the line’s standard entries, then you already know the score.

Batman is cast in the 6″ scale, with excellent articulation and holds a pose well. The costume is just as well made as you’d expect too. Though I have to admit I’m starting to want wire in all One:12 figures’ capes. We don’t get that here, and it would have made for some cool posing.

One thing I’ll point out on the plus side though, is that the ‘armor over traditional Bat-suit’ vision is pulled off really well. It’s easy to tell that there’s a (seemingly) regular old Batman costume under the heft. Not that you can remove that added bulk, but it’s a great effect.

Aesthetic

I kind of just mentioned this, but the armor is terrific. It’s not as in-your-face of a look as the BvS armor, but it’s cool and impressive in its own right. All parts of the suit are nicely detailed, from weathering effects and scratches to the flip-down goggles. Much like that previously mentioned armor, you get the feeling that the Batman has donned this getup before.

On those goggles by the way, I’m still a little fuzzy on why the suit needs those at all. We didn’t ever see them doing anything interesting in the movie, though that’s a question for a different review. Mezco gets ’em right (even if they’re a mystery in the design).

This figure is actually packed with little details too. The utility belt is great looking, and contains a peg for the grapple gun on the back. It’s one of those things that probably could have been skipped in the design, but that Mezco did anyway. They’re good like that.

Extras

As with the other Batman figures in the One:12 Collective, the Tactical Suit Batman comes with a fantastic array of accessories. That’s exactly what I look for in a figure from this line, and the Tac Suit does not disappoint.

In all, you get 2 pairs of those mysterious goggles (one for flipped up, one for flipped down), batarangs, grenades, the iconic grapple gun (complete with multiple attachments), and a Parademon rifle. For your displaying pleasure, you also get the ubiquitous stand, complete with flight post and display wires, so you can pose the cape.

Please note that this is not the same as a wired cape. These are wires that you can attach to stretch the cape out in flight positions. They’re cool, but they’re not what I was talking about earlier.

Batman also includes 2 portraits, and a great selection of extra hands. Those include 2 that have batarangs in them already. That seems redundant, but I’m not gonna complain.

Overall

Tactical Suit Batman is another great-looking Batman figure in a line that already has a few of them. Yes, this one sports a different look than any other, but is it enough of a difference to be exciting?

For me it kind of isn’t. I like this figure, don’t get me wrong, but with a standard movie Batman and 2 great comic book inspired ones already in my collection, Tac Suit Bats comes off a little dull.

Maybe that’s got something to do with me being so disappointed in the Justice League movie. Maybe if you actually liked it, or didn’t care all that much, you’d dig this figure more. It’s possible I guess.

But I don’t want to trash this figure just because I didn’t like a movie. That’d be awful, especially since the toy itself is very nice indeed. It’s just that whether or not you actually want one might be mostly dependent on your feelings about the film.

From the fiery pits of Apokolips

There are few characters in DC Comics like Darkseid. The ruler of the hell-like planet Apokolips, Darkseid’s darkness sits opposite the light of New Genesis in the pantheon of the New Gods.

More or less, the New Gods are equivalent to a more technological version of the real world gods of old. Not that those mythological beings don’t exist in the DC Universe as well, because they do, but you get the drift. Bottom line, Darkseid is massively powerful.

As such, he’s become a general force of villainy in the DCU, though I think most fans think of him primarily as a Superman baddie. They’ve battled so many times that that’s as accurate as anything. And as you might imagine too, there’s really no character that can take the Man of Steel to the limit like Darkseid.

So it’s fitting then, that he takes Mezco’s One:12 Collective to the limit too. This figure that we’re looking at here not only features the higher end elements of the company’s signature series, but also sports something that no other action figure ever has – polystone construction.

Build Quality

Darkseid is… heavy. You might have guessed that, since most of him is actual polystone, and it is indeed true. While Darkseid doesn’t feel quite as hefty as a full statue would, he’s weightier than almost any other 6″ figure you’ll find. I think die-cast would probably be a little heavier, but that’s about it.

Now, you might be wondering how the joints are on him, since he’s packing all that heft. The answer to that is that they’re shockingly just fine. The elbows and knees are nice and tight, though not overly so, and the figure overall stays in pretty much any pose that you set him in.

I’m genuinely surprised at this, since I’d figured the gimmicky stone build would sacrifice something, but it doesn’t seem to. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m sure eventually those joints are going to wear a bit. As time passes, Darkseid will most likely not hold poses as well as he does fresh from the box. For now though, he looks freaking great.

Aesthetic

The polystone is mostly a gimmick, it’s true, but it’s a cool one. And it gives this stone-like villain an interesting twist, while again, sacrificing nothing. As usual with the One:12, the rest of Darkseid is excellent as well.

The facial sculpts are spot on and capture a menacing dark lord well. He’s almost exactly as he appears in the classic DC Comics, though modern fans will notice some sharp differences from current canon.

Mezco has chosen to go with (more or less) Darkseid’s iconic look. In the New51/Rebirth era though, he’s had some significant costume changes, including the inclusion of a lot more gold and red, at different times.

This suit here though, is the traditional dark blue tunic, though of course Mezco has altered it slightly. The toy-maker does that with almost all of its figures, to give them somewhat unique looks. It usually works well, and it does here too.

In addition to the sculpt, the light up eyes really make this figure stand out. We’ll talk more about that in a second, along with the included cape that allows you to get a little more “Super Powers” out of him.

All in all though, this is the best looking Darkseid out there. And I include every version previously made in that.

Extras

I already hinted at a few of the accessories that come with Darkseid. One of them I kind of named too, so we’ll start with the cape.

The cape isn’t all that reminiscent of the Super Powers figure’s cloak. It’s still cool though, and does give the figure an air of that classic 80s version. This one’s made just a tad better though, as it’s got metal shoulder pads, and sits atop Darkseid’s frame perfectly. It’s a nice vinyl-y material too, and looks cool in a whole bunch of poses.

Other than that though, Darkseid is loaded. He comes with the usual assortment of hands and faces, as well as a Mother Box. Oh, yes, faces. Darkseid, unlike the rest of the figures in this line, doesn’t have a swappable head. That’s due to the light up feature. Instead, he’s got swappable faces. They’re easy to change, and just pop in and out.

The coolest of those is the one with the eye-beams, or as fans know them – the Omega Beams. This is the Omega Effect-derived blast that sent Batman on his famous trip back through time. Flat-out, it looks awesome all lit up on the action figure.

I have to mention here too, that while the light up eyes don’t allow for swappable heads, they don’t hinder movement at all. That’s because the entire apparatus is contained in Darkseid’s noggin. So there’s no wiring running down into the figure like with so many other lines. Another terrific innovation from Mezco.

Overall

Believe it or not, It’s occasionally boring writing Mezco One:12 Collective reviews. Almost all of these figures are such gold that there isn’t anything to pick at or knock.

Darkseid is much the same as usual. Everything is superb, and the result is a Lord of Apokolips that is visually stunning and looks tremendous in my collection.

Spidey comes home

Before we get started here, know that Mezco has a “proper costumed” Spider-Man out there or on the way. Actually they have two if you count the Miles Morales version. So unlike with Thor and Hulk, which got Ragnarok versions, this Spidey is actually quite welcome.

Hardcore fans especially should dig it since it’s not just another look at the Wed-head, but also from the Homecoming movie. That’s a pretty big film since it was the character’s first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now, honestly, I’m not a fan of the Spidey “tech” suit as seen in the film. But I did dig the homemade suit that he wore before he got the Stark-made edition. It’s actually pretty neat, and I’m a (very) longtime Spider-Man fan.

But let’s get back to the action figure, since it’s kind of the point here. If history holds true, then this one will not be shipping this year. I assume you’ll be able to pre-order him sometime soon though, so watch for that.

Cinematic

Most of what Mezco had to show off this SDCC was stuff that we’ve already been shown. Doctor Strange was there, as were the ever-upcoming Ghostbusters figures, Ash from Army of Darkness, and DC’s dark god, Darkseid himself.

But that’s not to say that there weren’t a few surprises. The teased Thor: Ragnarok figures of Thor and Hulk were on display, as was Spider-Man from Homecoming, and Daredevil from the Netflix show. All look pretty cool, though I have to add that I’m a little disappointed in the first two I mentioned.

I’m a comic fan first and foremost. While Daredevil and Spidey already have One:12 figures out there showcasing their printed forms, Thor and Hulk don’t. And these aren’t even “basic” MCU versions of those characters. Nope, these are molded after the aggro-duo as they appear in the upcoming Thor film. So they’re all gladiator’d out. If I had comic versions already, I might dig these. As it stands right now though, I’m a little aggro myself.

Also in the same vein is the Aquaman figure. I like the DCEU’s design of Aquaman a lot, and this is a basic version of that, so I do have less of an issue with it. Still though, I’d much rather have a “DC Comics” Arthur first, and a movie figure second. Same goes for the One:12 Wonder Woman, who was oddly absent.

Speaking of comics…

The comic stuff that Mezco did have own hand though, was awesome. Batman Beyond and Catwoman look terrific, and so does that comic-Spidey and Deathstroke. And personally, Iron Man can’t hit retail soon enough. Holy crap does he look incredible.

As for Superman, well, he’s too skinny. Let’s hope that gets ‘fixed’ before launch, because this figure really has a lot going for it otherwise. I also don’t really like the outfit on the Rising Knight Batman. They were going for a “Year One” look here, but the ears are way too long, even for a throwback look. I’m seriously liking that Bruce Wayne alt-head though. That’s just cool.

Oh, and it looks like Mezco might have put the long-shorts version of Wolverine in the case by mistake. So don’t freak out when you see him in the gallery. If you don’t remember, there was a kind of ‘thing’ about that. Mezco had this version all set, till fans said they weren’t digging the long, bike-style, shorts on him. Since, the company had shortened them a bit, and the figure looked that much better for it. I assume that’s still the version that collectors will be getting.

And then there’s that Punk Joker. Why are we getting another Joker when there’s already maybe the best Joker figure ever as a art of this line? I dunno. He’s actually pretty slick looking, however unnecessary he may or may not be.

I think it’s safe to say that Miles is pretty widely known at this point. That’s especially true since he’s now a part of the ‘standard’ Marvel Universe after the destruction of the Ultimate U. And yes, that means that there are two Spider-Men running around.

Harley Quinn, pleased to meet’cha

Finally (seemingly) on track is the One:12 Collective. Mezco’s finest line of action figures, the One:12 series has finalized some more release dates, and looks to be prepped for a big 2017. And a part of that will be the next figure from the DC movie realm, Ms. Harley Quinn.

As you can see, this isn’t the comic version of Harl, but the one from last year’s hit film Suicide Squad. The man known as Deathstroke

Not only is Slade Wilson one of the biggest characters in the new ‘Rebirth’ era of the DCU, but he’s also about to become a movie star. Word is that the character will appear as the main villain to Ben Affleck’s Batman in the upcoming ‘The Batman’ motion picture. So really, he’s kind of exploding. And that makes him a great choice for Mezco to add to their One:12 Collection of action figures.

The figure is what you’d expect from One:12, meaning tons of detail, terrific poseability, and a top notch sculpt. As Slade is featured both with and without his mask in the comics, this version of him includes both masked and unmasked heads (or, portraits).
