The 14th Athens Digital Arts Festival exploring the unknown future of the upcoming Technological Apocalypse through art, science and technology, under the theme SINGULARITY NOW.
The PhotoPhore’s selection will be focused on the related concept of TECH BREAK.

TECH BREAK: One day there will be a Tech Break. A breaking point with the life and society as we know today. A breaking point with the current technology.
The Tech Break is a singularity in the evolution process of human kind. It’s the point in which something different and unexpected happens and changes the order of things.
Will a superior artificial intelligence, that surpasses the man, be created? Will this intelligence be autonomous and developing without the man? Will we create a new organism that can control the universe?
Or, will the Tech Break be the moment when the Universe rejects the human technology, bringing us back to a new Stone Age?
Will it be a moment of sudden and unmanageable development, or the breaking point with an unsustainable way to be human?
Would we need to take a break after the Tech Break?
Through Art we can suggest a new scenario, beyond the one we live today.
New world, new ways of living, new relationships between men, and between men and the technology.
We ask artists to present us their visions on the Tech Break; to show us the unexpected futures that await us after the Tech Break, and the premonitions about the world that will follow the one we live today: technology development, science evolution, human relationships.

To take part in the selection, please send us by email the following materials:

“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.”
In our times, as the relation between technology, science and art is constantly strengthened, these three sectors shape the manifestations of human behavior and expression. Through the above mentioned triptych, art-technology-science, man manages not only to explain the physical world but also to redefine his potentials and create new, digital realities.
With the help of technology, art and artistic creation are used as the intermediaries of communication between inconceivable, complex scientific knowledge and humans. They promote research and innovation, especially to the young generation enhancing their interest in the exploration of new developments. Thus, the wider public comes in contact with science and technology, integrates them experientially and becomes more educated.
On the other hand, as the development of science and technology drastically changes all fields of life, making man a “powerful creator”, art and philosophy come to question and criticize the way this power is controlled and handled. The technologically advanced world is not a terrestrial paradise; on the contrary, it can pose several risks even for its own creator, man.
As a result, with the aim to explore both utopian and dystopian views on the future of art, technology and science, Multitrab Productions and the 14th Athens Digital Arts Festival invite you to a two-day event with screenings with free entrance. The program of the film tribute includes premieres of renown films, documentaries and video art.

In the first part of the exhibition, the artists selected by ADAF curators Elli-Anna Peristeraki and Eirini Olympiou, ‘transcend’ the digital culture and exchange opinions under the theme #PostFuture.
The elusive transition of digital culture is shaping a future ‘beyond digital‘, where the physical and the digital are merging. In the late 90’s Negroponte stated that “the digital revolution is over“. Almost two decades later and having accepted that the digital culture has been stabilized into our everydayness, we are moving forward to a more abstract creation. The necessity of innovation and excess of limits has been a primary goal imposed by the ever-evolving technological fetish.

In the second part of the show, a selection of the originally-programmed films presented by The PhotoPhore, explores the theme #PostReality, investigating the infinite possibilities that reality offers to overcome itself. Technology, dystopia, utopia, parallel universes, dreams.

Nowadays, as we experience a new reality where the physical and the digital intertwine, a new whole world emerges in which art, science and technology become one. Thus, the main objective of the exhibition is to explore the new art form that is shaped by the developments in biotechnology.
Revolutionary discoveries, which result from scientific research in areas such as architecture and art, open up new roads forcing us to imagine a more “lively” future in every field around us. Consequently, art is changing, it is “becoming alive” and a new art form is emerging, BioArt.
Athens Digital Arts Festival in cooperation with the Department of Biological Applications and Technology and the Department of Fine Arts and Art Sciences of the University of Ioannina present a video art compilation and video installations, introducing us to this new demanding but also fascinating art genre, BioArt.

Although the fact that #ADAF2017 has been finished and we already head to the Open Call for artists for #ADAF2018, the last edition of the Festival keeps on contributing to the artistic and cultural happenings of Greece.
ADAF in collaboration with the Greek Market Research Company, Focus Bari, conducted a research on ADAF2017’s visitors with rather interesting results regarding their profile and interests. At the same time, on the initiative of Focus Bari, the results were compared with the average Greek attitude towards Technology & Culture, data derived from FocusonTechLife Web (B16).

The impact of ADAF2017 is proven by research findings, as 93% of visitors said they were excited and 96% would recommend it to friends.
ADAF always aims at being at the center of developments by detecting the trends of society and culture. The survey by Focus Bari highlights the main trends of the Greek public, opening up new roads in the cultural industry.

In addition, on the occasion of the above survey, we also present you the recent “Study for the Mapping of the Cultural – Creative Industry in Greece” by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, which was drafted by the Institute of Regional Development of Panteion University, in which we had the honor to contribute.

Athens Digital Arts Festival is delighted to inform you that is selected as one of the 26 EFFE Laureates by the EFFE International Jury. The Laureates are chosen from amongst the 715 Label recipients by EFFE – Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe for their exemplary work and commitment to festivals’ role in the arts and societies. The EFFE Award Ceremony will take place on 18 September during the Arts Festivals Salon in Brussels, hosted by the Centre of Fine Arts – BOZAR.
Being the only Greek Laureate, Athens Digital Arts Festival is rather honored and proud to represent the local cultural scene to the European Festivals Association (EFA). Such recognition is always important for ADAF as it strengthens our efforts for innovative initiatives and development while enabling us to promote Greek culture internationally.
EFFE is a result of many years of intense collaboration with the European Commission and European Parliament. EFFE started as an organization by the European Festivals Association (EFA) in order to focus more single-mindedly on Europe’s diversity and creativity. As a result, we are really proud to be part of this creative community and to share knowledge and experiences with international experts.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported us through all these years and, especially, the audience that always encourages our passion for cutting edge actions.
From our side, we are pledged to have an exceptional presence and strong social engagement at the EFFE Award ceremony, celebrating the diverse festivals’ community all over Europe.
The 26 EFFE Laureates (in alphabetical order) are:
It was over a decade ago when Nicholas Negroponte, academic and computer scientist (founder and Chairman Emeritus of MIT Media Lab), declared that “the digital revolution is over” and when Kim Cascone, an American composer of electronic music, ushered in the word post-digital in his book “The Aesthetics of Failure: “Post-digital” Tendencies in Contemporary Computer Music in 2000”. The 21st century welcomed so many other academics, artists and theorists who elaborated on the post-digitalism issue, one of the most recent being Mel Alexenberg, artist and educator, who published his book in 2011 “The Future of Art in a Postdigital Age” offering insight into new art forms emerging from a postdigital age to address what he calls “the humanization of digital technologies”. In 2012, artist Theo-Mass Lexileictous publicly revealed, for the very first time, his preoccupation with #postdigitalism in an interview with Dazed Digital before writing his #postdigitalismmanifesto, launched at the P3Studio Gallery in Las Vegas. The exhibition #POSTDIGITALISM in May 2012 at Morfi Gallery, Limassol, Cyprus represented the artist’s official declaration of #postdigitalism concept and vision.
For Theo-Mass Lexileictous, #postdigitalism primarily refers to the exploration of new avenues dealing with the extraction of the digital into the physical, the result of which aims to create hybrid artworks. Coined in 2012, #postdigitalism is a term necessarily preceded by a hash mark (#) in order to be identified as part of this decade’s language formation and highlight the emergence of a hybrid language evident in our everyday communication, present in all types of media.
A creative exploration into art and language, the #postdigitalism notion according to Theo- Mass Lexileictous consists of:
#POSTDIGITAL ARTWORKS: #hybridartworks and #postdigitalistobjects
#POSTDIGITAL LANGUAGE: #postdigitalistautomaticwriting and #hybridlanguage
The #postdigitalism chapter in Theo-Mass Lexileictous’ work is not just another episode, but an autonomous, in-depth and mature investigation into the issues surrounding contemporary art and culture. Paradoxical as it may seem, Theo-Mass Lexileictous’ latest research assumes that #postdigitalism is related to Surrealism, the 1940’s post-war European artistic movement.
Observing the way we use language in social media networks, #postdigitalistautomaticwriting was coined by Theo-Mass Lexileictous to refer to the surrealist automatic writing. The way in which people communicate today – the use of hashtags, random words, fragmented phrases and sentences – is what initially prompted Theo-Mass Lexileictous to look at the Surrealists’ practice of automatic writing. Their objective was to express themselves in writing without filtering their thoughts, but rather to achieve an automatic response to writing, which they thought could be associated with their unconscious. However, automatism in Theo-Mass’s #postdigitalistautomaticwriting concept addresses the ways through which users can automatically enter themed image archives by following the word preceded by the hash mark (#). The concept of #postdigitalistautomaticwriting, according to the artist, is assumed solely in the form of printed text. The same principle applies to all #postdigitalist art and language practices since #postdigital is understood as whatever is extracted from the digital world into the physical.
The definition of #hybridlanguage involves all the aforementioned, only in this case the word or phrase preceded by the hash mark (#) is used within consistent sentences. An example would be the sentence, “The #postdigitalism issue will be released in early December”. In #postdigitalistautomaticwriting, this would be“#postdigitalism @theomass #newspaper #theomasstimes #lexileictous #selfie #december #issue6”.
#postdigitalistobjects are created following the same rationale in an attempt to explore the same concept and philosophy. Practically explained, #postdigitalistobjects are three dimensional artworks/sculptures. A good example would be a 3D object created on 3D software and consequently materialized with a 3D printer. Objects that bear #postdigitalistautomaticwriting, #hybridlanguage or any type of digital language conventions are also included in the range of #postdigitalistobjects since the information they carry renders them #postdigital. For example, a magazine that bears the inscription #thesexissue; within the context of #postdigitalism, it is no longer just a magazine, it is a #postdigitalistobject.
His 2D artworks aim to explore and question the outcome that results from the cross between the abstractness of the digital world and the substantiality of physical existence. What occurs in their intersection causes the artist’s fixation on the notion of hybridity. Commonly defined as the composition of heterogeneous elements, the meaning of hybrid is put forward to denote exactly that: the merging of two distinct realities and the effect they provoke when juxtaposed. For example, Theo-Mass Lexileictous’ latest painting displays a white-grey checkered pattern in order to represent what we perceive/understand as a transparent background in the digital language, on which a caption in black reads #thisisnotatransparentbackground. A pure hybrid as he describes it, the #thisisnotatransparentbackground painting is, according to Theo-Mass Lexileictous, the best example of his #postdigitalist 2D artworks’ theory. Referencing Magritte’s iconic painting “Ceci n’est pas une pipe”, #thisisnotatransparentbackground is created to challenge the viewer’s perception by posing the following question: how do we perceive the outcome that results from the intersection between these two worlds?
Within the discourse of Postdigitalism throughout the last decade, one notices the emergence of several linguistic variations of the same word. The Post-digital for Cascone became postdigital for Alexenberg and #postdigitalism for Theo-Mass Lexileictous. What ties them all together though, is the fact that the terms post-digital, postdigital, and #postdigitalism refer specifically to artistic practices and most importantly bear questions, thus fulfilling the primary purpose of art. What is Postdigitalism in art? Which artworks belong under the umbrella of Postdigitalism? When did the postdigitalism notion begin? Theo-Mass Lexileictous ventures on a journey of creative research in an attempt to explore his definition of #postdigitalism and the yet unknown potentials of uniting the digital world with physical existence with the objective that these outcomes will ultimately configure new avenues for the future of art.
On 22 and 23 July, the event “Spread The Future” took place at Athens International Airport – “Eleftherios Venizelos”. The audience visiting Greece participated in an exciting experience and came in contact with digital culture by engaging actively in a multimedia and futuristic event.

In the framework of its parallel actions and international partnerships, ADAF2017 collaborated with Mashup Film Festival and presented a rather interesting project/screening, on Saturday 3 of May, in Paris.
ADAF’s video art curator Eirini Olimpiou, selected “Found Fotage” films from ADAF’s 13 previous editions and together with Mashup Film Festival’s director, Julien Lahmi, they secretly mixed it with Mashup films.
Found Footage and Mashup Cinema both dealt with the notion of memory and were part of the family of “recycling” or “second hand” cinema. But they were quite different in form and opposite in a way : found footage used forgotten materials in order to offer them visibility whereas mashup used mainstream elements already very familiar to the public and messesd around with them.
The found footage included :
Panagiotis Tomaras (GR) Memory Tapes (2010) 11:20min colour sound
Stelios Oikonomidis (GR) Signalize (2015) 04:56min colour sound
Rick Niebe (IT) MANNEQUIN (2016) 09:00min colour sound

The digital culture, as an integral part of our everydayness, is constantly changing in an effort to satisfy the humans “perpetual eagerness” to exceed every technological limit. This continuously shifting form of digital culture shapes a future “beyond digital”, a futuristic convergence of the ‘real’ and ‘digital’ boundaries.
The Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”, while being a place connecting the ever-changing reality of people-travellers and redefining with its own subjective way notions like time and space, is our starting point for this year’s journey to the post-future.
Through this path, travellers of the world encounter this new exciting but still rather elusive “post-digital” reality, where the digital merges with the analog and the physical.
The mural #PostFuture is a realistic incarnation of the digital-physical contradiction. The horse, representation of the physical word. The lens, representation of the digital world. In #PostFuture these two representations create a whole new entity, a situation that derives its existence from the present state but points out the future state of the world.
REC is an interactive installation set in today’s cultural context where surveillance over the society is no exception, where face tracking and face recognition in order to collect powerful data is an integral part of digital tools we use every day. Apparently, today’s society is ready to embrace many forms of surveillance and data collecting believing that those which do not impose limits on the society can bring about more convenience. But unfortunately, we discover that our e-mails are read, we can be watched and listened by built-in cameras and microphones in our smartphones, TVs and computers and collected data are used to build economic power against personal privacy. Whether we like it or not, we engage in a daily interaction with real or virtual methods of gathering data about our lives. REC installation perfectly illustrates this modern system of dependence.
The viewer doesn’t really need to love art to become the focus of an artistic work. Likewise, the monitoring equipment does not necessarily need to be real to create an atmosphere of control. Sometimes a mere impression of its existence will do.
In the process of interacting with the installation the spectators’ approach usually evolves from just playing and having fun to the afterthought and moment when the question appears: is this data of me collected? And if so, what is it used for afterwards?
The installation is designed for city public spaces to enter it spontaneously, experience it and becoming part of it without time and amount of participants limitations.
You can pass by Kolokotroni 61 and enjoy the installation until 12/6.

#ADAF2017 #PostFuture
Athens Digital Arts Festival (ADAF) has successfully completed its 13th edition that took place from 18 to 21 of May at a venue of very interesting architectural perspective, at 23 Mitropoleos Street, by courtesy of “NBG PANGAEA REIC” in support of ADAF.
More than 250 artists from 22 countries submitted their view regarding the theme of the Festival, #PostFuture. For four days, #ADAF2017 invited the audience to imagine the future, offering a unique experience. This year’s edition explored the ways that technological advancements influence art and the everyday life, under the constant question, if the future is already here then what has to follow? In this framework, the Festival presented interactive installations, web art, digital image, video art and animation screenings, presentations of international festivals and audiovisual performances. Moreover, the audience had the chance to engage with the international artistic scene at the Artsits Corner and the rooftop of the Festival, as well as to familiarize with digital culture and its representatives through talks.
This year, as we integrated at the programme “PEPP – Regional Operational Programme ATTICA 2014-2020 – European Regional Development Fund – With the support of Greece and the European Union”, we’ve been given the chance to attract more and diverse visitors due to our free entrance, to expand our audience through multiple acts and to develop our activities during the year. Furthermore, we presented international festivals with exclusive content and guests, such as Japan Media Arts Festival (Japan), MashUp Film Festival (France), ArtFutura (Spain), Imagine Science Films Festival (U.S.A), Videonale E.V. (Germany), Mapping Festival (Switzerland), VideoFormes Digital Arts (France). ADAF 2017 collaborated with the Ministry of Culture and Sports presenting for the year of cultural exchanges between Greece and China, the special event #PostFuture Dialogues, offering to the audience the opportunity to enjoy installations and screenings by Greek and Chinese famous and upcoming artists in public and private places, as well as a tribute to Microwave International New Media Arts Festival. In addition, ADAF presented the 24hour artist projection “Digital Canvas” that was broadcasted by IkonoTV and the rich compilation of video-art short films and animation in collaboration with the international digital platform The PhotoPhore.
Another great collaboration that we established was with GERMANOS (Powered by GERMANOS). The Festival expanded its horizons, introducing new technologies in the field of digital arts. ADAF and GERMANOS joined forces and organized multiple important actions, such as the VR Creations Contest, presenting the first VR gallery with artworks of the audience.
In this edition, the festival has also enriched the kids program, ADAF Kids, offering to the kids and their parents the chance to explore the magic world of digital culture, through educational workshops, technological experiments, animation screenings and interactive installations. Kids learned the secrets of 3D Printing, painted digital graffiti and made a moving flower robot by playing with light sensors.
More than 17.000 visitors attended ADAF 2017 and had the opportunity to get closer to digital culture and get familiar with new artistic practices. The audience luxuriated a special tribute to the unique digital persona of Theo Mass Lexileictous, got transferred to infinity through the interactive installation Infinity Room by Refik Anadol the was supported by the Delegation of European Commission and the European Parliament Office in Greece (Europe4All, #EU4U), flew to magical dreams with the interactive VR installation Immersio by Immersio Group, and watched web art with the unbeatable speeds of COSMOTE VDSL. Finally, every night the Theater of the Festival was enabling entrance toto different dimensions with the audiovisual performances by renowed and award winning artists such as Kenta Nagakawaga, NOHlab και Audiofil, Marco Donnarumma, ο Fraction, ο Doron Sadja, οι Stratofyzika και ο Martin Messier, Pandelis Diamandides, François Zajéga and Loïc Reboursière.
We would like to thank you all for participating and supporting this year’s edition and we are looking forward to seeing you back again in Athens Digital Arts Festival 2018 with the promise of an even more complete experience.
Stay tuned because the #PostFuture is still here!

]]>In the late 90’s Negroponte stated that “the digital revolution is over”. Almost two decades later and having accepted that the digital culture has been stabilized into our everydayness, we are moving forward to a most abstract creation.
This new futuristic lifestyle is reflected from the coherence of the ‘real – virtual’ boundaries into a replica of the physical world where everything is countable in digits, therefore simplified and transparent. Yet is post digital the real progress?
Exploring this blurry future, we invite artists to ‘transcend’ digital culture and exchange opinions under the theme #PostFuture. The deadline for the submissions is 31.01.2017 .
At the same time, our goal is to involve in this interesting and lively conversation all that share the same curiosity with us about our lives in the #PostFuture.
The interaction with a constantly increasing part of the active residents – and visitors – of the city is a primary desire and direction of this year’s Athens Digital Arts Festival. We are now moving into a new, more open and interactive relationship with our audience.
