Arifa premiered at the festival on September 8 and its lead performance was recognised with the Best Actor award for the luminous Tanya Maniktala.

Arifa is part of the Kashmir trilogy – Muhabbat Se, Gubbara Entertainment’s three-film Kashmir anthology directed by Rohin Raveendran, Durgesh Singh and Palash Vaswani. The anthology tells stories from Kashmir that look beyond conventional narratives. Instead they explore the human experiences, relationships and emotions that connect people to the region.

For Dimpy Agarwal, Founder, Gubbara Entertainment, the recognition is particularly meaningful. “Arifa is a very special chapter of our film Muhabbat Se. A screening of the film in Kashmir, at this historic event before the film releases in theatres in October is the universe’s magic wand at play. Muhabbat Se is our love letter to the valley. Arifa winning in its hometown, to me, means our love has been received.”

Director Rohin Raveendran said, “At the centre of our short film ARIFA is an arduous emotional journey in search of answers to questions that have long remained unspoken. Making ARIFA was, in many ways, an exploration of these silences and the weight they can carry over time. At its heart, the film is about forgiveness and finding peace before it is too late. I hope the film leaves audiences with a sense of that emotional journey, and perhaps makes them think about the words they have left unspoken in their own lives.”

The award is like a booster shot for Arifa as it heads towards an October release in theatres.

At the heart of VIBE is a friendship between Hardik and Bugs, making the casting of two characters central to the film’s dynamic. While Sparsh Shrivastava may not have been the obvious fit for Bugs as the character was originally imagined, Kunal Kemmu saw an opportunity to do something unexpected. Finding Sparsh an interesting actor, Kunal reshaped the character to make him younger and reworked his equation with Hardik, giving Sparsh a part unlike those audiences had seen him play before.

Speaking about why he reshaped the character of Bugs for Sparsh Shrivastava, Kunal Kemmu shared, “In all honesty, he doesn’t fit the part as is, so I moulded it a little bit because as an actor I know you can. I don’t believe you know when people lot of times, say you cannot pull off something like this. I think if you’re a good actor, you can pull it off unless it’s not your age. If the director has one particular physicality in mind or bohot action hai but isne kabhi action hi nai kiya hai ya physically utna strong nai hai, those aspects I get it, which also actors can mould yourself for. But for me, he was younger than the part, so I made the part younger, and I made the relationship between them slightly different from how it was initially imagined.”

He further added, “Only because I thought that he is an interesting actor and it was a different part from what he had done before. And I like to do that with actors, when you know people always see them ki yeh aisa kar raha hai; you always get cast for the same thing. I actually like to cast somebody who doesn’t fit that part in the so-called, you know, how you’d imagine to see them. So that’s what excited me, and I think that’s why Sparsh was an immediate choice for Bugs.”

The film produced by Kunal Kemmu and Chirag Nihalani under the banner of Drongo Films follows two inseparable friends whose ordinary lives spiral into an unpredictable adventure, pushing their survival instincts and friendship to the limit. If you had to define Mirzapur in one word, what would it be?
Divyenndu: Bhaukaal is the word. It was always bhaukaal.

Ali Fazal: I think the word is jalwa. This film is not just ours—it belongs to the fans. They manifested it. If I had to sum it up, this film is for you.

Shweta Tripathi: Love. That’s what it is. Love hai humara. Hum sabka.

Harshita Gaur: Family. We’re such a big family, and so are the fans. In Mirzapur, we call it family. That’s the word that comes to mind.

Where did the idea to make a Mirzapur film come from?
Gurmmeet Singh: The fans manifested this. The love the series received over the years, the way people embraced it—our producers wanted to turn that love into a celebration. And this film is that celebration. It’s an absolutely new story. Everyone can come and enjoy it like a full-fledged picture—it’s larger than life, full of bhaukaal, a lot of fun. The show’s writers came from corporate backgrounds, marketing and sales, and that sensibility shows up in the film’s dialogue. Babban’s very first dialogue in the film is about inflicting two wounds with one strike, because cost-benefit analysis says that’s better. You’ll find language like that throughout the movie.

Tell us about Babban Yadav.
Ravi Kishan: You’ve loved Ravi Kishan for years, but you’ve never seen me in a character like this. A dangerous man who is also a lover. And his love, Mumtaz Bibi, is played by Sonal Chauhan. People use guns—I have a lovely little pair of scissors. I stab someone with it, into his stomach, and while I’m doing it I look down and say: “Arre saala, khoon kam nikal raha hai.” So I tell him: “Tera haemoglobin kam hai re.”

Jitendra, you’re best known for Panchayat. What was it like entering the Mirzapur universe?
Jitendra Kumar: Mirzapur is a very beautiful world. Being part of it was new for me, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Shriya, (Spoiler alert!) your character Sweety was murdered in Season 1. How does it feel to come back?
Shriya Pilgaonkar: Felt great to be back from the dead. The film is very fresh—there are nostalgic elements, but also a genuine togetherness in this team that translates onto the screen. That’s the reason the series works as well as it does.

Sonal, how was your first experience with the team?
Sonal Chauhan: My first experience with this team was actually with Ali. We were flying back from Dubai. He was on a different seat and I didn’t know he was on the same flight. He sent me a note that said “Welcome to Mirzapur”, it was very sweet. We got to talking, and from that flight onward, it felt like I was already part of the family.

What makes this film different from the series?
Ali Fazal: Within the film, we’ve fed in certain memories, the effect of which you’ll realize later when you watch the upcoming seasons. It’s very interesting and the logic fully checks out. Watch the film. There are very interesting things that Puneet ji and Guru have put in.

Rasika Dugal: Adding to what Ali said—we’ve already lived the future and are coming back to play these characters, so it was a very interesting experience in that way. And for Beena, I felt that within the film’s story, the character’s story has been given a context that I perhaps didn’t know before. But now that I know, it was a lot of fun playing that perspective.

Gurmmeet Singh: Actually, for the audience, it’s like a treasure chest. It’s like a game, the more you search, the more you’ll find. You can connect things, break them apart, twist them, and you’ll find something new within a new story. So for fans, there are a lot of hidden things within the film that you can discover.

What does this journey mean to you, personally?
Pankaj Tripathi: Whatever credit I get, I give it to Guru bhai—Gurmeet Singh. I’m blessed, and I’m thankful. Advance bookings are going strong across the world. This film won’t disappoint you. All your favourite characters will bring you joy.

Ravi Kishan: The songs are amazing. There’s a Nusrat Sahab track, “Saanson Ki Maala,” and a new voice from Bhopal—Madhur Sharma—unbelievable. That track plays over Rasika’s character, and it takes a dangerous turn when the song is playing and there’s a gun in her hands.

If you could play another character from Mirzapur, who would you choose?
Divyenndu: Kaleen Bhaiya. Without question. But Pankaj sir wouldn’t give it up easily.

Rasika Dugal: No, I wouldn’t give up my character. I’ll keep Beena, thank you.

Ravi Kishan: Destiny brought me to Babban Yadav, and Guru bhai gave me the opportunity. This is the role of a lifetime.

Talking about being a part of the anthology, Vikramaditya Motwane says, “What drew me to Lust Stories 3 was the chance to explore what happens when the comfort of everyday life begins to rub up against the desire for something unexpected, and this story allowed me to explore that space with warmth, humour and a little bit of unpredictability. Bringing it to life with the crew, the producers, Netflix, and with this madly gifted cast was an incredible experience.”

Kiran Rao adds, “What interested me about this story was how the first sparks of an attraction can quickly become something far more complicated. Desire makes us curious, and sometimes willing to take chances we normally wouldn’t. I was interested in what happens when those choices begin to have unexpected consequences. The anthology format, and the creative freedom Netflix gave us, allowed me to play with intimacy and humour. Shakun Batra says, ‘’For me, the most interesting relationships are the ones where people don’t quite know what they’re feeling, or how to make sense of it. Affection, insecurity, allure and frustration can all exist at the same time, often in ways that surprise us. I wanted to explore that emotional ambiguity with honesty, without judging the characters or trying to give them easy answers. There’s something inherently dramatic, and often quite funny, about watching people navigate those contradictions. Working with such a talented cast, and having the creative space with Netflix to let those emotions unfold naturally, made this a really rewarding experience.’’

Vishal Bhardwaj concludes, “What fascinates me about desire is how deeply it is connected to imagination – to the stories we tell ourselves, and sometimes the stories we are afraid to tell out loud. These are eight stories that explain why that reputation has followed him for more than three decades.

1. THE 7 AM CALL TIME
Ahmed Khan has one of the simplest Akshay Kumar stories, and perhaps the most telling. A 7 am roll call doesn’t mean a 7 am phone call asking where the actor is. It means Akshay is already there. Speaking to The Indian Express in 2024, Khan recalled, “He is punctual. Suppose we have a roll at 7 am; at 6:30 am I receive a call, ‘Sir, Akshay sir’s car is here. Sir, Akshay sir is in the van, getting ready. Sir, Akshay sir is asking if he should walk out; it is 5 minutes to 7.’ As soon as I say, ‘Yes, camera ready hai kya?’ He’s here. ‘Chal ready hu, 7 baj gaya.’” The story gets better. Khan added that Akshay doesn’t turn his punctuality into a power play. “He never even gets mad at you or makes you feel that you made him wait.” For a film set, where one person’s delay can hold up dozens of others, that is not a small thing.

2. THE SET WHERE SAFETY CAME FIRST
Akshay built his reputation doing the kind of action that often involved real risk, but he has also spoken about how the responsibility extends beyond the actor performing the stunt. In a 2014 interview, while discussing the treatment of stuntmen and body doubles, he pointed to the precautions on his own sets. “We also take care of the crew. I can tell you that on my sets we had arranged for an ambulance that was always on the standby. We also had a doctor on set and, on top of that, we coordinated with nearby hospitals and arranged for two emergency beds, if we needed them. So much for safety.” He also explained his own approach to action years later, telling The Times of India that “good fear” means checking the equipment properly because “a small mistake” can cost someone their life. Whatever one thinks of his appetite for performing his own stunts, the important part of the story is that he doesn’t treat the danger as his alone.

3. EIGHT HOURS, BUT EIGHT HOURS OF WORK
There is a misconception that Akshay’s famous eight-hour rule is loved by the unit—the people who work with him value every bit of it. Bosco Martis saw it when Akshay was shooting songs in Jordan. “He works strictly for eight hours, but during those eight hours, he doesn’t leave the set,” Bosco told Siddharth Kannan. Then came the extraordinary part: “He was not well; he hadn’t rehearsed. He had a 101- 102 fever, but he was dancing. There was no break. We shot four songs back-to-back in 4 degrees temperature. There was a wind chill; dancers had to be given extra care. Akshay sir was just at it.” Bosco’s verdict was almost affectionate: “Woh faulaad hai” – he is made of steel. And it wasn’t simply physical endurance that Bosco remembered. He also said Akshay “brings a great energy to set, and unites the crew.”

4. HE DOESN’T ARRIVE WITH A ‘STAR’ ATTITUDE
Rohit Shetty knew Akshay before he was a director with a Rs 100-crore franchise machine behind him. Shetty was an assistant director on Suhaag and even played Akshay’s duplicate in the 1994 film. When the two finally worked together on Sooryavanshi, Shetty spoke about the lesson he had taken from those early years. “With him, it is the maturity to deal with people. He doesn’t lose his temper. He lets go of a lot of things. And the kind of discipline he has!” Shetty told India Today. But the line that says more than the punctuality and fitness is this: “Everybody knows he gets up early and comes to set on time and finishes the film early, but the way he conducts himself, despite being such a massive star, is what amazes me. A lot of newcomers should learn this from him.” It is a compliment about the person other people have to work with.

5. THE DIRECTOR DOESN’T HAVE TO CHASE HIM
For AR Murugadoss, who directed Akshay in Holiday, the advantage was not merely that Akshay arrived on time. It was that he arrived ready to do the work. “It is sheer discipline on his part. He stays fresh for every shoot, is never late on set, and reports to work whenever the director wants him. He understands what’s needed from him, and finishes his scenes quickly,” Murugadoss told Forbes India. There is a reason that he has endured. “Finishes his scenes quickly” can sound like a small compliment until you remember how many departments are waiting for an actor to get through a scene. The faster the principal photography moves, the sooner the entire machine moves on.

6. HE MAKES NEWCOMERS FORGET THEY’RE WORKING WITH SOMEONE WITH DECADES OF EXPERIENCE
Sargun Mehta came into Bollywood as a newcomer to Hindi cinema, playing a police officer opposite Akshay. She has admitted that when she first met him, she was too intimidated to speak. Akshay, she recalled, quickly picked up on it. “He used to tell me, ‘Tu bolti nahi hai kya?’ and I was thinking, how am I supposed to tell him that I am so scared?” Sargun recalled. What followed was less about reassuring her with words and more about changing the atmosphere around her. “He makes his co-actors feel so comfortable and is very easy to work with. Even on the sets while shooting, he will make everything comfortable for you.” She also noticed that he never tried to control how his co-stars performed. “He is very appreciative, and always gives a free hand at improvising or doing as many takes as you want to.” And Sargun said Akshay would make sure the entire team had dinner together so that everyone developed a bond. “On the next day on set it doesn’t seem like, ‘Oh my God, whom am I working with?’” For a newcomer, that can make the difference between being intimidated by someone with aura and stardom and simply working with a co-actor. And it says something about Kumar’s understanding of a set: the hierarchy may exist, but it doesn’t have to dominate the room.

7. THE PRODUCER DOESN’T GET LEFT WAITING OUTSIDE
Akshay has spoken about the producer’s position in unusually practical terms. In a Forbes India profile, he explained why he thinks so much about the person financing the film. “In this industry, it’s not about how good an actor you are. It’s all about how good you are to your producer. In my nearly 26 years in this business, I have learnt this. It’s how well you protect your producer that matters.” He had an even more vivid way of putting it: “The producer is standing outside your van, which he gave you! How the hell did he land outside? That is one thing I have told Vedant [Bali, his business manager]… never make a producer stand outside. Call him in first.” That mindset also explains why he has repeatedly described himself as a “producer’s actor”. It isn’t particularly glamorous. It is, however, an unusually clear understanding of whose money, time, and risk are tied up in the production.

8. THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM DON’T HAVE TO BE AFRAID OF HIM
Aanand L Rai offered perhaps the most straightforward description of Akshay when they worked together on Atrangi Re. It wasn’t about punctuality, fitness or box office. It was about how easy he was to read and work with. “Akshay’s honesty made me want to work with him again after this film. He’s the most uncomplicated actor I’ve ever met. He never tries to disguise himself. So, it’s easy to understand and read him. For a director like me, that simplicity is very charming,” Rai told Hindustan Times.

That word, uncomplicated, might actually be the most useful way to understand all the other stories. The punctuality, the preparation, the eight-hour rule, the attention to safety, the producer-first approach: none of it appears to be a performance of professionalism. It is simply how Akshay has chosen to work. And perhaps that is why the stories from sets have remained remarkably similar across the decades: different directors, different films, different departments, but the same Akshay Kumar.

Over the years, with projects like Mismatched, The Sky Is Pink, Dear Zindagi and others, the actor earned all the hail as someone with the ‘boy-next-door’ appeal. And the audience loved it. From the charm to the softness, Saraf ensured all of it reached his fans and admirers.
