One day, when the old man was out walking, he happened to pass the school. The teacher had been scolding the children. “You are like mice and donkeys,” he said to himself. “Maybe he can make a son for me out of mice and donkeys.” The old man hurried to farmer whose field he owned. “Sell me your donkey,” he said. “And have you boy help me catch some mice.”
The farmer thought the old man was crazy, but he did as he was told, and soon the old man was back at the school with a donkey and a bag of mice. “Here,” he said to the teacher, “I’ve brought you all you need.”
“All I need?” said the teacher puzzled. He didn’t know what the old man was talking about.
“This morning you told the children you could make men out of donkeys and mice. Now, I want you to make me a son. Here are some mice, and here is a donkey.”
The teacher didn’t know what to do, but he knew the old man was rich, and so he said. “All right, but you must leave the animals with me for three weeks.”
After three weeks had passed, the old man went again to the school. The teacher had hidden the donkey and give the mice to the children, but he didn’t want to make the old man unhappy. “Ali, sir,” he said. “I have bad news. The mice died.”
“Never mind about the mice, then.” said the old man. “But what about the donkey?”
“The donkey. sir. I mean son, sir, is doing very well indeed. He has gone to the city to help the governor. You’ll be happy to hear that your son is the governor’s assistant.”
When the old man heard this, he gave the teacher some money and rushed home to tell his wife the good news. “Tomorrow,” he said. “I will go to the city to see our son and give him good wishes.”
The next day, the old man put on his best clothes and traveled to the city. he went straight to the governor’s house, and the guards let him in because he looked so rich and important. He talked loudly about his son.
“Who is that man, and why is he making so much noise?” asked the governor.
“I don’t know, sir,” said his young assistant, “but he seems to know everyone.”
“Well. I don’t know him.” said the governor. Tell the guards to show him out.”
When the guards asked him to leave, the old man began to shout. “Doesn’t the governor know who I am? Son, tell him.” he cried, waving at the governor’s assistant. Tell him who I am.”
The young assistant said he’d never seen the old man before, and the guards then had to carry the old man out.
The next day, the rich old man returned to the governor’s house. This time, he carried a donkey’s feed-bag. I’ll make him remember who he once was,” he said and held the bag before the eyes of the governor’s assistant.
“Who is that strange old man?” said the assistant. “And why does he pint at me when he waves that feed –bag”
“He says he’s your father, sir,” said the guard.
“But I have no parents. You know that.” the young man replied. “Show him out, but be gentle with him.”
“The governor’s assistant was once a donkey in my field,” the rich landowner told the guard.
Now the guard knew that old man was crazy, but he wanted to be gentle, so he said, “That may well be true, sir, but if you come back here. I shall have to lock you up.”
And so the rich old man went home. He was very unhappy and he wept as he told his wife that their son did not know him. A few days later, the old man went out for a walk. As he walked past one of the fields, he suddenly saw the donkey. “So! You’ve came back.” the old man shouted. ‘I’ll teach you to respect your father.” He picked up a stick and began to chase to donkey.
The old man chased the donkey across the field, but he was too slow to catch it. The donkey leaped over the fence and disappeared.

Everybody knows that the dog and cat, the cat and the mouse are not friends. Yet there was a time when these three animals got along very well together.
Here is the story of how they became enemies.
Once there was a mighty king who ruled over a large-and rich country. The fields were green, the cattle fat and the people happy. Near the capital, where the king lived, was a large forest. Often the king and his ministers went to the forest to hunt. They never returned home without some animal which they had caught.
One day the king went to the forest with his friends and nobles. When they entered the forest they saw a strange sight. Dead deer, and wild goats and pigs were lying all over the ground. All the dead animals were half-eaten. It looked as if a greedy giant had taken a bite here and there.
The king flew into a temper. How could this happen in his kingdom! He ordered his nobles to find out who had killed the animals. But though his nobles searched everywhere, they could not find the culprit. After many hours of searching, they decided to return home. But one of the nobles stayed behind. He hid himself in the midst of some thick bushes.
Not long after the sun had set, he heard the whirling of mighty wings above the branches of the trees. To his surprise, many animals ran in fright out of the bushes. A moment later, a giant eagle dived down upon them. With his sharp claws and hard beak the huge bird attacked the frightened animals. Soon they all lay dead on the ground. The bird then began to eat them. He ate only the most tender parts of the bodies. When he had eaten enough, he spread his great wings and flew up into the sky.
The nobleman told the king all that he had seen. Immediately the king sent soldiers to guard the forest, so that the eagle could not hunt there anymore. So the eagle began to attack cattle in the village.
Every night the villagers found some of their buffaloes, goats or horses killed. Many of the villagers became poor. Without their buffaloes they could not plow their fields, and they could not grow enough rice. They decided to ask the king to help them. The king offered a big reward to anyone who could kill the bird. A few noblemen tried but none of them was clever enough. The great bird swooped down on them so fast they did not have time to strike with their swords. They were torn to pieces by its sharp claws and hard beak. Soon nobody wanted to fight the bird.
The king did not know what to do. He offered a larger reward but no one wished to lose his life for gold.

One day, the king was in his stable. He was looking at his horses when a messenger came to say that the eagle had killed five buffaloes in a village not far away.
“Oh!” exclaimed the king. “Isn’t there anybody in my kingdom who can kill this monster? I promise that whoever kills this cruel bird will be richly rewarded. I will look upon him as my own brother and he will live in the palace, eat at my table and rule the country with me!”
It happened that three animals heard what the king said. They were a hunting dog, a stable cat and a field mouse, who were all good friends. At that time, the dog and cat were not thought of as house animals. They were not allowed to enter house and no one gave them food.
When the three friends heard the king’s words, they looked at each other and the dog said, “I wish I could kill the eagle. If only he could not fly, I would be able to kill him quite easily.” He bared his strong sharp teeth.
“I could scratch his eyes and blind him,” hissed the cat. “Then he would not be able to hunt animals and he would die of hunger. It’s true what Dog said, if be could not fly I too could make hire It would be wonderful to live in the palace,” she said arching her back.
“Perhaps I can help the two of you,” squeaked the mouse. “I can think of a way to stop him flying.” He swished his long tail.
“You!” exclaimed Dog and Cat. “How can a tiny animal like you stop the eagle from flying?”
“I think I can,” insisted the mouse. “Listen, why don’t we work together? I’ll make sure that the eagle cannot fly; Cat will scratch him blind and Dog will kill him. Then we’ll go together to the king and share the reward.”
Cat and Dog agreed -with this plan and the three of there went to the king to ask his permission to kill the eagle together. When he had agreed, the three animals left the palace and went to the forest to look for the eagle.
“I know where the eagle sleeps,” said the mouse. “He always rests in a big tree in the forest. When lie’s asleep, I’ll bite off the feathers of his wings. Without wings he will not be able-to fly.”
So Mouse led Dog and Cat to a lonely part of the forest where there was a very tall tree. Around the tree there was a clearing covered with grass. The, three friends waited in the bushes for the eagle. Soon they heard the flapping of strong wings and then they saw the eagle fly on to a branch of the tree. He had just finished a large meal of goat’s meat and he was sleepy. He closed his eyes and was soon fast asleep.
When he saw that the big bird was asleep, the mouse crept up the trunk of the tree. He crept nearer and nearer until he was between the claws of the eagle, Mouse trembled with fright when he saw the long pointed claws. But he overcame his fear and crept up the feet of the eagle which were thicky covered with down. He moved forward, inch by inch, until he was under one of the eagle’s wide wings. With his sharp teeth Mouse went to work. Quietly he bit off all the eaglet feathers. As soon as he had finished with one wing, he crept over to the other and did the same. When he had bitten through all the feathers, Mouse went down the tree. He told his friends what he had done.

Cat and Dog began to mew and bark under the tree, and called out to the eagle to fight. The bird opened his eyes and angrily looked down at them.
“Who is that?” he asked. “I’ll show you who is master of the forest. When he saw Dog and Cat running round and round the tree, he opened his wings and tried to fly. Instead, a cloud of feathers whirled from his wings and floated down to the ground. The eagle was unable to fly and fell to the ground.
He tried to hop away but Cat jumped at his head. Her sharp claws pierced the bird’s eyes. At the same time Dog jumped on his back and bit into the eagle’s flesh. The eagle beat his useless wings. He tried in vain to use his claws and he also tried to use his beak to peck at Dog and Cat. He rolled
over and over on the ground but he could not shake off Dog who finally pierced the eagle’s throat. The once so powerful bird fell motionless on the ground. He was dead!
The three animals returned proudly to the palace. They were tired and dirty but they felt very happy. Mouse, Cat and Dog had proved they could kill the eagle.
The king kept his word. The three friends were allowed to live in the palace and eat the same food as the king. All the ministers treated them with great respect. Everybody in the country said how clever and brave they were.
All this praise and honour changed the three friends. They became boastful. Each one said he was the greatest hero of all.
“I did the most dangerous work,” squeaked Mouse shrilly. “I bit off the eagle’s wings. There was nothing else for Dog to do but bite his throat. And Cat? What did she do? Oh, she just made a lot of noise.”
“How dare you say such a thing!” hissed Cat furiously. “I clawed his eyes. Only then could Dog kill him. I did the most dangerous work!”
“No, that’s not true!’? barked Dog angrily. “It was I who killed him. I alone! I bit through his throat with my strong teeth! I am the greatest hero! ”
And so they started quarrelling. Soon Cat chased Mouse out of the palace, and Dog fought with Cat whenever they met.
Thus ended the friendship between Dog, Cat and Mouse. Since then the three have been enemies, but all three still like to live in the houses of men.

Once upon a time there was a man who had twelve children, but was not able to give them enough to eat. Alice, the obedient and hard working eldest daughter, became very thin, and it was, perhaps, for this reason that the Sea Fairy took pity on her and brought her a gift of a sardine, telling her to be sure to keep the bone after she had eaten the fish. ‘It is a magic fish bone,’ the Sea Fairy told Alice, ‘and it will grant you one wish, but only one. So be sure to use it wisely,’
Alice was tempted on many occasions to use her magic fish bone; when one of her brothers was ill; when her sister was lost; but she always managed to put things right by herself, without resorting to the magic.
One day, however, Alice found her father in desperate poverty: he had no money left at all. ‘Is there no way to find any money?’ she asked, worriedly ‘No, I have already done everything possible!’ her father replied, sadly. ‘Well, then, if there really is no other answer….,’ and the young girl put her hand it her pocket and stroked the fish bone.
The Sea Fairy appeared and at once set about resolving all their problems: she even managed to find a handsome young man who married Alice, so that she never again felt the need to use the services of a magic fish bone!

An old king, with death approaching, remembered that he had not yet decided to which of his three sons he would leave his kingdom. As lie thought about this, he realised that there was only one thing which they knew how to do well, and that was nothing! So he decided he would leave his throne to the son who was best of all at doing nothing. He called the three princes to him and began to question them.
‘I am so lazy,’ said the first, ‘that if a grain of dust lands in my eye while I am falling asleep, rather than go to the effort of getting it out, I prefer to forget about sleeping and remain all night with my eyes open.’
‘Ah, but if I,’ said the second prince, should sit near the fire to warm myself, why, rather than tax myself by moving my feet, I let them get burnt by the flames.’
‘I am so lazy,’ boasted the third prince at this point, ‘that if I were being hung and I was given a knife to cut the rope, I would let myself strangle to death, rather than make the effort of raising my hand.’
‘That really is astonishing!’ thought the old king. ‘You couldn’t get lazier than that! The throne is yours!’ he said, turning to the third and laziest of the three princes.

Long ago a fairy called Batu Sumang Buyung was bathing in a river. Along came a magician called Bayang. Bayang was a clever and wicked magician who could make himself disappear. He wanted to marry the fairy because he thought it would increase his magical powers.
‘Good morning, Lovely One,’ he called to the fairy.
Batu Sumang Buyung was so startled that she hid behind a tree. The clever magician ran to the river bank and stole her magic sarong.
‘Oh,’ she cried, ‘please give it back. Otherwise I cannot go home to the sky.’
The magician laughed. ‘So, Lovely One, you will have to stay with me.’ He took the fairy back to his house, and forced her to marry him.
Some time later a son was born to the fairy and the magician. The fairy asked Bayang to give her sarong back, for she wanted to take their son to visit his grandmother in the sky. But the cruel magician knew that if he did that, she would never come back to him. So he refused to let her go.
Batu Sumang Buyung and her son stayed in the village with the magician. Although the villagers hated her husband, they knew that the fairy was kind and gentle. She did many things to help whenever she could.
Now, the villagers had good reason to hate Bayang. Once he had made a clay figure and stuck pins into it. The next morning one of the village leaders died.
The villagers went to see another, good, magician in the forest. They asked the good magician to put a curse on Bayang, and a few weeks later Bayang died. They cut off his fingers before he was buried, so that he could not do any more mischief.
At last Batu Sumang Buyung was alone with her son. She wanted to visit her family in the sky, so she put on her magic sarong and flew there.
Her mother, the queen of the fairies, was not pleased with Batu Sumang Buyung. ‘You have stayed away for a long, long time,’ the queen said, ‘and now you bring with you a child of the Earth. You must go back to where you came from, and take him with you.’
And so, Batu Sumang Buyung and her small son returned to Earth. She was very sad, and soon after that she gave her sarong to the headman for safekeeping and disappeared. Before long, the villagers learned that the fairy had died. They cared for her son, and he soon grew tall and strong.
When Batu Sumang Buyung’s son was grown up, the headman came to see him. He carried the sarong left with him by the fairy. ‘This was your mother’s,’ he said. ‘If you wear it, you will fly to the sky. Your mother thought you might like to visit your grandmother.’
Batu Sumang Buyung’s son took the sarong. He put it on and immediately flew to the sky. His grandmother was no happier to see him this time than she had been when he was a young child. Still, she gave him a gift in memory of his mother. The gift was a round brown seed.
The fairy’s son thanked his grandmother and returned to his village. He planted the seed in the ground, and soon it grew into a tall tree.
When the tree bore fruit, he gave some to the villagers. They were very pleased. ‘The outside of the fruit is hard and coarse, like your father,’ they said. The flesh inside is soft and white, like your mother. And the milk is sweet and reminds us that you are Batu Sumang Buyung’s son.’
Before long, people from all over came to buy the fruit. Batu Sumang Buyung’s son became a rich man. Those who bought his fruit also took the seeds back to their own countries. And that is how the coconut came to grow all over the world.

I did,” the baker replied and with a big smile Junha said, “Well then, this costs the same as your bread’s scent.”
