Please look at my comments in the Recon area about my Dad, Bill Mueller. I wrote a book about the 286th.

As of 2023, there is exactly one survivor of the battalion, and he is 98. He sent me an email a couple weeks ago.

My uncle Charles P. Blankenship served in the 286th co B. I have his mooring reports and have searched and searched and can’t find much as he never spoke about his time in service. Could you send me that letter you have please sir? Thank you.

I stumbled across this web page as I was just starting to research my grandfather’s military history. He never spoke of his time in the service; therefore, I knew nothing about his time there. As I was looking through his extremely limited war belongings, I found a typed letter “Travels of CO. “A 28th ENGR. COMB. BN. APO 655% POSTMASTER, NY NY.” This letter Is just a list of dates and places he had traveled with very limited descriptions. The dates and locations are virtually identical to the map posted on this webpage. If a photocopy of the letter would help, please let me know.

My grandfather was, T/5 Lawrence A. Hediger-286th Engineer Combat Battalion COA (if that is written correctly). Any information, no matter how limited, I can collect on his days of service would be appreciated very much. Thank you, Michael L. Hediger

Thats my dad! He passed away in April 2007. I have photos that he took when the 286th was in Dachau. And some others as well.

The man 2nd from the left, slightly behind 2 other men, was Dudley P Hays. He was my father and passed away in December of 2011 at the age of 90. He rarely spoke of his war years – I think there was too much seen he wanted to not remember.
