  • October is the best time to visit Malibu as in-the-know locals love the mild temperatures, Malibu wine tasting experiences, and less-trammeled hiking trails.
  • The month is the “secret season” for its relaxed vibe and the best time to visit Malibu.
  • All the October attractions are within a few miles of the Malibu Beach Inn.

October is Malibu’s true sweet spot of the year—and not just because of Halloween and seasonal foods like pumpkin pie start appearing. The warm weather tends to stick around, at least until the crisper autumn air sweeps in later in the month. Tourist crowds thin out, leaving the October visitor with an abundance of open tables at buzzy restaurants, more attentive wine pourers for Malibu wine tasting, and much more space on hiking trails and art walks around the ‘Bu.

With that in mind, we’ve got some insider tips and attractions that will not only convince you October is Malibu’s “secret season,” but your favorite season for spending a few days at the Malibu Beach Inn in this iconic Southern California beach town.

Dive into Malibu Wine Country

The ‘Bu is known for its pristine beaches and glamorous residents, but this town of 9,000 people also has a wine country. Grapes have been grown in Malibu since 1824 and, by the middle of the 19th century, Los Angeles County was producing more wine than any other region in the state. (That’s right, Napa.) Prohibition put a damper on the world of Malibu wine tasting and producing, but the industry here was revived in the 1980s and today there are a modest 46,000 acres of hillside vineyards, the coastal fog creating perfect conditions for Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Malibu is home to about 50 wineries, both along the coast and in the canyons. If you have time to visit just one, try Cielo Farms Vineyards, a small slice of Tuscany in a canyon. Lounge on the terrace overlooking the steep, vineyard-clad hills or in the ambient stone barn wine bar, while sipping on a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve or a crisp Viognier for an ideal Malibu wine tasting experience. You can even bring a bottle back to the Malibu Beach Inn to sip while watching the sunset.

Embrace the Harvest

October is not just about Malibu wine tasting. The October calendar is crammed with autumnal-inspired events in Malibu. Every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., for example, the Malibu Farmers’ Market blossoms into action, as a bounty of seasonal autumn produce is on display. The market is just a 20-minute stroll along the beach and then through the Malibu Country Mart.

If you’re in town toward the end of the month, there’s a fun, farmer-led feast—Farmers David Hertz and Laura Doss-Hertz, as well as chef Abraham Lemus, take guests on a tour of mountain top Xanabu Farms, first strolling through the orchards and coffee plantation and then sitting down for an outdoor harvest feast with views of the Malibu coastline. You can get more information or make a reservation here.

Friends hiking in Malibu during fall

Take a Hike

And by that, we’re not inviting you to check out of the Malibu Beach Inn. Your getaway isn’t over just yet. Literally, take a hike. With summer temperatures waning and ocean views in abundance, October is ideal for taking advantage of Malibu’s many scenic strolls and hikes.

One of the most popular hikes (you could even call it a “stroll”) is the Rock Pool Trail in Malibu Creek State Park, about seven miles north of the Malibu Beach Inn. Known as the “Yosemite of Southern California, thanks to its deep canyons, volcanic rock peaks, and lush scenery, this 2.5-mile round trip trail is flush with verdant wonders, as you’ll amble through oak tree-studded savannahs in transition from summer green to autumn yellows and oranges and over babbling streams. The piece de resistance, though, might be the iconic rock pool, setting for countless TV shows and films, that doubles as a refreshing watering hole for swimming when the weather is warm. There are picnic benches along the way, so plan to bring a snack. Or uncork a bottle of wine you picked up at Cielo Farms.

Once a month, the Malibu Library organizes Nature Walk and Story Time, in which local naturalists take a slow, easy amble through Legacy Park, telling intriguing stories about the local nature and wildlife inhabitants of the area. This month, the one-hour event is happening on October 21 at 10:30 a.m.

And if an autumn hike in the mountains above Malibu or an educational naturist walk don’t appeal, there’s always 21 miles worth of sandy beaches that is the Malibu coastline, right at your front door outside of the Malibu Beach Inn.

  • There’s a long tradition of Malibu volunteerism that stretches into the present day as locals and visitors alike have ample opportunities to give back to the community.
  • Malibu features a high concentration of hiking trails, beaches, state parks, and wildlife, creating a wide variety of Malibu volunteer possibilities.
  • Most of the Malibu volunteer prospects are within a few miles of the Malibu Beach Inn

One of the very first volunteer organizations in Malibu was Trancas Riders and Ropers, an all-volunteer equestrian group founded in 1952 that offered equestrian-related activities and training to local families, children, and the under-privileged.

The organization only recently permanently galloped into the horizon, but it reflects both the rural nature of Malibu and also the city’s close relationship with volunteerism. Malibu, with its many stunning hiking trails, its 21 miles of sandy beaches, and equestrian organizations, is awash in volunteer opportunities. In fact, you can barely throw a seashell without hitting one.

The volunteer spirit is alive and well in Malibu, both despite and because of the recent Malibu fires that devastated part of the area. Just a short distance from the Malibu Beach Inn, there are plenty of ways to get involved in the community—whether you’re a longtime local or a weekend visitor at the Malibu Beach Inn. And with Thanksgiving just around the corner, what better way to give thanks to “The Bu,” as locals call this coastal town of 9,500 lucky denizens.

Community getting on a bus for Malibu volunteer opportunities

Adamson House

Just a 10 minute stroll from the Malibu Beach inn, the historic Adamson House and the Malibu Lagoon Museum is not just a fun place to visit; it’s a wonderful Malibu volunteer opportunity. Built in 1929, the stunning Spanish Colonial Revival beach house is nicknamed the “Taj Mahal of Tile,” and you’ll see why once you get a peek at the interior. Volunteer opportunities here include becoming a docent to lead groups of visitors through the house, as well as a visitor center assistant, providing information to guests. This Malibu volunteer role requires an eight-hour-per-month commitment. As a docent, you’ll not only get educated on the history of the house and the area, you’ll get an up-close look at the intricate and wondrous tilework throughout the property.

California Wildlife Center

The Malibu-based California Wildlife Center has a stellar reputation for looking after both land and marine animals and keeping the environment safe and clean for them. CWC offers ample amounts of exciting and rewarding Malibu volunteer opportunities, allowing the volunteer to have some unique animal experiences. These include working in animal rehabilitation and marine mammal volunteers assisting in the rescue of sea lions, seals whales, dolphins, elephant seals and seabirds.

Heal the Bay

A good portion of Malibu falls within the Santa Monica Bay. Heal the Bay was founded in 1985 with a mission to making the coastal waters and the beaches that they hug as pristine, clean, safe, and healthy as possible—for humans and animals alike.

The nonprofit organization offers a bounty of ways you can be a Malibu volunteer. In addition to other volunteer shifts, Heal the Bay organizes regular beach clean-ups, called Nothin’ But Sand, where volunteers comb the sandy strands looking for trash and other refuse—perfect for any Malibu Beach Inn guests who want to give something back while enjoying the quintessential sunny beach weather. Check the calendar to find out the next time they’re doing a clean-up in Malibu.

Malibu Creek State Beach

For 50 years, Malibu Creek State Beach has been the domain volunteer docents taking visitors around the verdant, 8,215-acre mountainside state park to reveal the natural wonders that lurk within. Whether you’re leading a nature hike, manning the visitor center, taking part in a group trail clean-up, or helping out with restoration and conservation, volunteers at Malibu Creek State Park are ambassadors. The park offers plenty of opportunities for Malibu volunteers.

The Boys & Girls Club of Malibu

With outlets all around the country, the Malibu facility of the Boys & Girls Club is always looking for volunteers, especially for short-term commitments—ideal for Malibu Beach Inn travelers in search of Malibu volunteer prospects. Check the calendar, but you may encounter posts seeking volunteers to help out in a chili cook-off, kids’ fun run, or a half-marathon, among other one-day events.

The City of Malibu

Malibu’s Community Services Department offers an array of Malibu volunteer spots. You can be a volunteer at literary readings, art exhibitions, CineMalibu movies in the park, or cleanup strolls in Malibu Bluffs Park, Legacy Park, or Charmlee Wilderness Park. If you’re a visitor, any one of these volunteer activities gives you the opportunity to meet locals and see a part of Malibu you may not have normally come across. At the same time, you’re helping the community. It’s a win-win. Find out more here.

Whether you’re a lifelong local or spending a getaway with us at Malibu Beach Inn, opportunities to give back are everywhere. The recent fires showed just how resilient this community is, and giving back isn’t just for Thanksgiving; it’s a year-round mindset.

  • Is Malibu walkable? You can ditch the car for a few days and do seaside strolls to nearly every attraction and eatery in town.
  • Malibu Beach Inn is perfectly placed on Carbon Beach amidst Malibu’s 21 miles of scenic coastline, within walking distance of the town’s best restaurants and shopping.
  • A quick rideshare to the Getty Villa will allow for a walkable afternoon amongst one of the best art collections in the area.

“Walkin’ in LA. Nobody walks in LA,” was the chorus of the Missing Persons’ 1982 hit song, which struck a chord with Angelinos for its accuracy. But there are some scarce swaths of Southern California that are infinitely walkable—one iconic beach town, in particular, is ideal for giving the car its own vacation and letting your shoes do some navigating.

That particular parcel of Southern California is 21 miles of coastline known as Malibu. This seaside oasis of 10,000 denizens is a walker’s wonderland, where mountainside hiking trails descend to white-sand beaches and open-air shopping centers, cafes and restaurants hug the shore providing for perfect pit stops. In the two-day itinerary and guide below, you’ll learn:

A woman walking on the beach and a blue and white beach sign

DAY ONE: Sunbathing, swimming, shopping, sushi, and oyster shooting.

Morning

Waking up at Malibu Beach Inn to the gently crashing waves at Carbon Beach, a.k.a. “Billionaire’s Beach,” may tempt one to stay in bed for longer than usual, but breakfast is calling. The in-house restaurant, Carbon Beach Club (or CBC), brings its California-meets-the-Mediterranean-Coast philosophy to the morning meal. Think: grilled shrimp toast sprinkled with chili oil and dolloped with creamy Haas avocado on toasted sourdough, tacos stuffed with scrambled eggs, Spanish chorizo, and avocado, or Turkish-style poached eggs over spiced yogurt cradled by a fluffy piece of crunchy country bread.

Late-Morning

If you’re wondering where to walk in Malibu, you should take advantage of the mild weather in the morning and walk to the beach. After all, Carbon Beach is a mere 34 steps from the hotel. If you feel like going slightly further afield, a 10-minute walk northwest of Malibu Beach Inn will get you to Malibu Lagoon State Beach, a 110-acre California state park that is commonly referred to as Surfrider Beach. There is plenty to do here, even for the whole family—from sunbathing and swimming to meandering on the flat, dirt-paved walking trails around the wetlands to visiting the Adamson House and the Malibu Lagoon Museum, a Spanish Colonial Revival beach house from 1929 that is nicknamed the “Taj Mahal of Tile,” because of the extensive and impressive tilework inside. Take a guided tour (Wednesdays to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the hour) to see the interior, especially the 60-foot ersatz Persian “rug” made entirely of tile, even the fringes of the “carpet” are tile.

Lunch

Just a 10-minute stroll from Malibu Lagoon State Beach is Broad Street Oyster Company, where you can take your taste buds on their own walking tour of the most satisfying seafood in town. Start with some oysters, of course, before moving on to sea urchin spaghetti, a basket of fish and chips, or a softshell crab sandwich.

Malibu Country Mart answers the question is malibu walkable

Afternoon

If you had your mind set on doing some shopping while in Malibu, you’re in luck: Broad Street Oyster Company happens to be next door to Malibu Country Mart, a “boutique mall” that is really an open-air collection of boutiques, galleries, cafes, and even a playground for the kids. If you haven’t shopped ‘til you dropped, right next door is Malibu Lumber Yard, a newer and arguably shinier complex of boutiques and art galleries. Keep your eyes peeled for some deals and some A-list celebrities.

Early Evening

On the way back to the Malibu Beach Inn—a leisurely 15-minute walk—stop at the Malibu Pier, an iconic early-20th-century fishing pier that houses restaurants and shops. You can also rent a rod here and join the local fisherman. If it’s near the time of sunset, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular show as the sun says sayonara for the day, leaving the stars and the moon to illuminate your easy amble back to the hotel.

Dinner

When the stomach starts to rumble, head off on foot east of the hotel along the beach. After about seven minutes, you’ll be at the Malibu outpost of famed Nobu, the Robert DeNiro-co-owned sanctuary of all things sushi and seafood. If it’s your first Nobu experience, order the signature black cod miso, or opt for the omakase menu where you’ll get a procession of sushi bites, prepared with the freshest, most seasonal seafood money can buy.

If Nobu is full or not your cup of (green) tea, step into Sake House Malibu, a sleek Japanese spot for sushi just a few minutes’ walk inland from Nobu.

A beach picnic at sunset with the ocean in the background

DAY 2: Protein coffee drinks, beachside picnics, and pedaling toward masterpieces

Morning

Tuck into some Med-meets-Cali breakfast fare at the hotel—the property even has a service to deliver breakfast to your guest room balcony. But if you’re up for a morning meander, and wondering where to walk in Malibu, amble east down the beach for 15 minutes to Caffe Luxxe, a chic, Italian-inspired coffee spot that expertly pulls classic espresso drinks, plus a few signature coffee drinks like the protein vanilla buzz, a tall glass of vanilla-laced iced espresso topped with silky vanilla protein foam. Pair your coffee drink with a flaky croissant or a blueberry muffin.

Late-Morning

Take some time to relax on Carbon Beach; after all, you’re on vacation. Perhaps grab one of the handful of books and magazines left in your guest room at Malibu Beach Inn and read, letting the sounds of the ebb and flow of the Pacific Ocean be your soundtrack.

Lunch

You’re staying right here on Carbon Beach for lunch. The Inn regularly puts out its beach service—sun loungers and umbrellas—as long as it’s not high-tide season. And with that, the hotel can arrange with the concierge to create a beach-side picnic for your lunch today. Give them your food preferences and restrictions, et voila! Picnic lunch is served right on Carbon Beach.

Afternoon

You can’t spend a couple of days in Malibu without seeing one of the town’s cultural treasures: the Getty Villa Museum, a very accurate recreation of an ancient Roman villa that houses the Getty’s collection of Roman and Greek art. Admission is free; you just need to reserve a slot for the timed entry via the museum’s website. Consider it your primary Malibu art walk.

The museum is a seven-mile journey east of the hotel. And since you probably don’t want to trudge there and back on foot, take a quick ride share or drive to enjoy the walkability of the Villa with fresh legs.

Dinner

Spend your last evening at the Malibu Beach Inn. You’ve devoted the last two days to seeing Malibu by foot and so maybe you want to give those feet a respite. After all, the Carbon Beach Club’s dinner menu may be the culinary highlight of the last 48 hours. Start with a St. Germain-and-prosecco-laced Malibu Spritz while perusing the menu, perhaps letting the ultra-refreshing mint-and-feta-sprinkled chilled marinated watermelon or the heirloom tomato and stone fruit salad tempt you as a starter. Or go straight for the saffron-accented, seafood-loaded paella as a way to crown two wonderful days exploring Malibu by foot.

It’s been over four decades since the Missing Persons first sang “Nobody walks in LA,” but apparently the band never made it to Malibu or they would have re-thought those lyrics. Is Malibu walkable? We certainly think so.

  • Movies filmed in Malibu have highlighted the breadth of landscapes throughout the destination, making it an ideal location for filmmakers of all stripes.
  • Films and television shows from the 1940s all the way to Stranger Things have taken advantage of the beauty of Malibu as a backdrop to their stories.
  • Looking for some of the views you’ve seen on the big screen? We’ll tell you about some of the favorite Malibu movie locations.

The diversity of Malibu’s environments makes it a stunning locale for a vacation – in one geographically-contained trip, you can hike the Santa Monica Mountains, surf some of the best waves in the country, and relax on pristine beaches.

Such a range of “looks” isn’t just a boon for visitors, however. It’s also been the siren’s call that has brought Hollywood to the coast and led to a seemingly endless list of movies filmed in Malibu.

The entertainment industry has been woven into Malibu’s DNA since the Malibu Colony’s heyday in the 1940s. Then, as now, some of Hollywood’s biggest stars came to the coast for beachside escapes and private vacation homes, ideal settings to stay, play, and unwind. Before long, those leisurely retreats often became backdrops for work as well: by 1946, the film industry’s presence had become more permanent. That year, 20th Century Fox purchased what is now Malibu Creek State Park, where it filmed scores of productions over the next three decades.

Got a favorite movie that was shot here? Find the Malibu filming location and visit for a fun photo opportunity. Here are some of our favorites:

A wooded sign post in Malibu Creek State Park

M.A.S.H.: Before the long-running, acclaimed television show, there was the 1970 film version of a medical unit during the Korean War with Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould. Home base for that unit was, in real life, Malibu Creek State Park. Malibu Country Club’s golf course made appearances when the doctor’s needed a little extra stress relief, as well.

Stranger Things: While the California scenes in the fourth season of the Netflix favorite were actually shot in Albuquerque, the surfing and beach scenes in season three were all filmed along the Malibu coastline.

The Notebook: While much of the film was shot in Charleston, South Carolina, its most memorable romantic moment unfolds at El Matador State Beach, just 12 miles west of Malibu Beach Inn. The dramatic cliffs and secluded shoreline provided the cinematic backdrop the filmmakers were looking for. Today, visitors still make the pilgrimage to recreate the scene, often reciting the film’s unforgettable line: “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.”

Planet of the Apes: The original 1968 classic is best remembered for its unforgettable final scene, where Charlton Heston’s character discovers the Statue of Liberty partially buried in the sand, realizing he’s been on Earth all along and that humanity’s fate is sealed. That iconic cinematic reveal was filmed at Westward Beach, part of Point Dume. Beyond its famous ending, much of the rest of the film was also shot in Malibu Creek State Park.

The Big Lebowski: Point Dume is a favorite location for film shoots, which isn’t a surprise: the scenic views of the Pacific, the excellent surfing-style waves and the expanse of golden sand scream coastal vibes in the most relaxed manner. When The Dude makes his way to a bonfire party along the coast in this 1998 cult favorite, he’s at Jackie Treehorn’s mansion, but Jeff Bridges himself is along those stunning Point Dume shores.

The Karate Kid: No, the crane kick is not a Malibu-based invention, but when Daniel learned the move from Mr. Miyagi, they were on Leo Carrillo State Beach, about 15 miles along the Pacific Coast Highway from the front doors of the Inn. If you’re going to go replicate the kick during a stay here, make sure to stretch first.

Grease: How do you start a film about high schoolers in the California sunshine? On a beach, of course. And Leo Carrillo State Beach was the perfect establishing shot to set the mood for this musical favorite. (Carrillo has been a favorite filming location for Hollywood over the years, to the point where some have taken to calling it “Movie Beach.”)

Two images, one of a seagull on a beach, and El Matador Beach, used for movies filmed in Malibu like The Notebook

Hollywood may be miles to the east, and movie studio lots may be scattered across Los Angeles, but Malibu has long been one of the industry’s favorite backdrops. From sweeping beaches and rugged canyons to cliffside estates, the landscapes of movies filmed in Malibu have helped bring countless stories to life. Staying at Malibu Beach Inn places you at the heart of that cinematic legacy, with many of these iconic filming locations just minutes away. Whether you’re revisiting your favorite movie moments or discovering them for the first time, Malibu invites you to step into the scene.

  • A combination of beaches, woodlands, and a slower pace create a long list of things to do in Malibu for couples.
  • Malibu’s beaches are some of the most famous in California, but there are still secluded spots to explore with a partner
  • From dining at Carbon Beach Club to a tour with a professional photographer, there are plenty of activities to fill a romantic getaway.

Windswept beaches, theater outdoors, candlelit oceanside dinners: Apologies to Virginia, but Malibu is truly for lovers. There’s so much romance even in day-to-day activities here that it’s a perfect hideaway for a couple wanting to get away from the day-to-day, celebrate an anniversary or mark another milestone together. Follow this itinerary for a couple’s vacation that neither of you will ever forget.

Two images, one of the entrance to Malibu Beach Inn, the second of a couple in bed with brunch

Day 1

Check-in at Malibu Beach Inn: Take a few moments to get comfortable in your room, with its beach breeze, ocean view, and impeccable amenities. It’s the easiest way to leave the city life behind and get into the mood for a romantic, relaxing weekend. If the trip marks an anniversary or another special occasion, contact the hotel before arrival to ask about the experiences and arrangements available during your stay.

Sunset: Head west on the PCH about 12 miles and find a secluded spot along El Matador Beach to watch the sun fade over the horizon. There’s an inherent romanticism to any beach, but El Matador draws a smaller crowd while also featuring gorgeous rock formations and plenty of nooks and crannies that will make you and your loved one feel like you’re the only two people in the world.

Dinner: Return to the Inn for dinner at Carbon Beach Club Restaurant, where the sounds of the waves lapping up on the sand and the twinkling reflections along the ocean make for a beautiful backdrop to a dinner for two. And don’t worry: desserts here are made for sharing (although it’s hard to part with even a crumb of the Chocolate Pear Tart). The views and the food make it one of the most romantic restaurants in Malibu, CA.

Things to do in Malibu for couples include beachfront breakfast and walks on the beach

Day 2

Brunch: There’s no shortage of places to get brunch in Malibu, but a local favorite that combines good food with a gorgeous view is Café on 27, found in Topanga Canyon about 12 miles from the Inn. Grab a table on any level of the outdoor terrace for beautiful canyon vistas, and leaf through a menu loaded with California cuisine favorites, including a piled-high avocado toast and a decadent lobster benedict.

Photo Tour: Capturing moments and memories of a weekend in Malibu can bring a piece of that romance home with you. For an anniversary or milestone trip, a session with a local photographer can create a lasting memento while showcasing both you and the landscape. A photographer who knows the best angles around town makes a photo tour one of the most memorable things to do in Malibu for couples. Ask our concierge desk for suggestions.

Happy Hour: Malibu has a host of great options for happy hour, but for a romantic getaway, two spots jump to mind. The Malibu outpost of Zinqué, an LA-based group of wine bars, sets a serene mood, and the shared appetizer menu features wonderful charcuterie and cheese boards, perfect for pre-dinner noshing. For a more spirit-forward hour of happiness, take a five-minute stroll to Aviator Nation Dreamland, grab a couch seat next to the music venue and bar’s colorful tinted windows, and get in some good people watching and great cocktails.

Dinner: Head back up Topanga Canyon to The Inn of the Seventh Ray, a restaurant legendary in the Southland not just for its food, but also its wooded setting. With its rustic design and coastal setting, the Inn offers a quieter atmosphere that feels distinct from the energy of the surrounding area. But what it serves matches where they serve it: the Inn of the Seventh Ray received an award from Wine Spectator last year for its wine list, which features more than 250 bottles.

After-Hours: While in Topanga Canyon, check out the event calendar at the Will Greer Theatricum Botanicum, an outdoor theater that puts on plays under the stars and in the trees.

A couple holding hands and walking on the beach with the Malibu Pier in the background.

Day 3

Beach Walk: Get in some last-minute ocean therapy by wandering along the coast, starting at the Inn and the stunning Carbon Beach. Along the way, stop in at Malibu Farm steps away along the Malibu Pier to grab a sandwich or other handheld brunch favorites.

Getty Villa: A great last stop on the way out of town, this museum set on stunning landscaping is a serene and scenic way to end a romantic trip to Malibu. The setting itself is fascinating: the entire museum lies on grounds meant to recreate the feel of a Roman country home, and you and your partner could spend hours taking it all in. In between exhibits, make sure to take your time in the Outer Peristyle, the courtyard modeled on those of Roman villas, and to catch a last stunning view of the Pacific Ocean.

There are plenty of things to do in Malibu for couples, enough that you could spend a year of weekends in town and not exhaust the list. Consider reserving our Romantic Retreat package, which includes a $100 dining credit for Carbon Beach Club and a welcome amenity of chocolate-covered strawberries and chilled Laurent Perrier Champagne Brut. For a quick getaway, this three-day Malibu itinerary can be a guide to a weekend that brings you and your partner even closer. – But keep in mind that spontaneity is in the DNA of a relationship. When you stay at the Malibu Beach Inn, you’re at the center of everything Malibu has to offer – so feel free to make a spur-of-the-moment decision, too.

A Visitor’s Guide to Malibu Tide Pools https://www.malibubeachinn.com/blog/a-visitors-guide-to-malibu-tide-pools/ Wed, 20 May 2026 17:57:42 +0000 https://www.malibubeachinn.com/blog/auto-draft/ When you think of Malibu beaches, what do you imagine? For most, it’s the breaking surf or the golden sand.

The post A Visitor’s Guide to Malibu Tide Pools appeared first on Malibu Beach Inn.

  • Malibu tide pools, formed by the receding ocean at low tide, are favorite “hidden” and educational attractions.
  • Even tough tide pools are at the same beaches populated by surfers and sunbathers, there are a few extra precautions to take.
  • Explore Malibu beaches like Leo Carrillo, Point Dume, and even lesser-known Lechuza Beach both to understand the ocean a little better and to see the beach like a local.

When you think of Malibu beaches, what do you imagine? For most, it’s the breaking surf or the golden sand.

But what if, for a moment, we thought about anemones? About tiny crabs? About the vast ecosystem of the ocean, distilled into a small pool of leftover tide?

Malibu tide pools draw visitors along the shoreline, inviting discovery up and down the coast. As microcosms of the larger ocean, they make great educational tools for younger family members. Visible only at low tide, these “hidden attractions” reward curious visitors willing to wander. And as important parts of the shore’s ecosystem, they make for indispensable parts of beach life in Malibu. Want to start searching out Malibu tide pools? Here’s what to know.

A young boy wading in Malibu tide pools at low tide

What are Tide Pools?

Tide pools are the small bodies of water left behind after ocean waves have receded from the shore. Natural indentations in the shore and barrier formations (think lines of rocks or tree roots) hold water in place, and when the ocean moves toward low tide, the water surrounding a tide pool goes back out to sea, leaving behind a small pool – anything from a puddle to a swimmable pond.

Because these pools essentially mirror the composition of the water, there’s a fascinating array of ocean life left behind, as well. Sea anemones, crabs, and even some small fish call Malibu tide pools home, turning these natural aquariums into captivating places to observe marine life up close.

How and When to Go to Tide Pools

Try to time your visit around one of the day’s two low tide periods, as that’s when the individual pools are the most visible. Most of these Malibu tide pools are on established beaches meaning that parking and arrival is no different than any other day at the shore. The most dramatic low tides often happen overnight after beach facilities have closed, though daytime conditions still provide excellent opportunities for tide pool exploration.

How to Prepare

Getting ready for the tide pools is very similar to preparing for a day at the beach, but with a little less gear. Make sure you’ve got the essentials, like sunscreen and water, and it’s always a good idea to bring snacks. Also, if you’re going from the pools to somewhere else – shopping in Malibu, for instance, or one of the area’s art exhibits – then a change of clothes may be in order.

Staying Safe

Being in nature can engender a tremendous sense of calm – it’s one of our favorite reasons to take a long walk along the beach – but there also needs to be an awareness of your surroundings. Wearing closed-toe shoes, rather than going barefoot or slipping into sandals, will protect your feet from sharp shells or various pinching creatures.

Respect the delicate balance of the tide pools by observing marine life without disturbing it and leaving rocks, shells, and habitats untouches, as even the underside of a single stone can support an entire ecosystem.

Our Favorite Malibu Tide Pools

Leo Carillo State Park: Located 15 miles west on the PCH from the Inn, Carillo is a consistent favorite for those seeking Malibu tide pools. That’s due in large part to the variety of pools found there: Whether it’s caves that clear out during low tide (and make for incredible photo moments) or smaller rock rings and sand depressions that are super-accessible for youngsters, Carillo has pools for everyone.

Point Dume: After spending time on the waves, wait for them to recede and find your way to these pools, about nine miles from the Inn. Head directly under the outlook, at the base of the cliff, and find sea stars along with several other coastal creatures. Bonus: Point Dume is a prime viewing spot for whales during their migrations, so you can see the ocean’s biggest and smallest forms of life from one spot.

Lechuza Beach: Purchased by the California’s Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority in 2002, this slice of the coastline 12 miles to the Inn’s west is still lesser known compared to its big-name siblings. But the pools, found at the base of a set of sandstone cliffs, are stunning all the same and often less crowded.

It’s a testament to nature’s wonder that such small pools of water, the literal leftovers of waves, can both give us so much fun and teach us so much about oceanic life at one time. When considering all the ways that you can spend quality time with the ocean while staying at Malibu Beach Inn, think about adding tide pools to the itinerary.

  • Relax on-property with massage-to-go services from Malibu spa Cure Wellness and morning beachside yoga (backed with a healthy breakfast from Carbon Beach Club)
  • Malibu’s oceanfront location and slower pace make it a perfect destination for wellness travelers.
  • Take in a tranquil bike trip, or clear the mind with mediation in one of Malibu’s hidden corners or mindfulness centers.

The blue skies, the expanse of sand, the casual atmosphere, the ocean breeze. If Malibu Beach Inn’s guests could use one word to sum up the Malibu vibe, that word is likely “relaxing.”

That shouldn’t be a surprise, considering how much of Malibu life is based around some of the country’s most stunning outdoor vistas (both beach and mountains). But beyond the setting, Malibu also features a thriving wellness scene, with plenty of chances to decompress, either as a vacation theme or after a day out. In fact, the Inn is currently offering a package, Vitality Ritual, which includes a Vitamin B Infusion, a foot reflexology session, and even Pressed Juicery electrolyte beverages throughout your stay – a perfect combo to recover from cheering on your favorite international soccer squad during this summer’s global football championship. With just a few moments of pre-planning, you can arrive in town with an idea how to maximize your relaxation.

Here are some ways to make wellness the central tenet – or an important side quest – of a trip to Malibu.

The Malibu Spa Experience – In House or In Room

Malibu Beach Inn partners with the best, and in Malibu that means working with Cure Wellness Center. The membership wellness club is just steps across the Pacific Coast Highway from the Inn’s front doors, and it has a special menu for our guests that includes massages, full body scrubs, facials, and even eyelash and eyebrow care. For those looking to include a massage in their stay, the Malibu spa will even come to your room for in-suite service—a nice perk for anyone who’s been jumping, singing and shouting in the stands during a match.

Practice Balance with Yoga on the Beach

Walk along the shoreline and, at some point, you’ll certainly see locals and visitors alike stretched out on yoga mats, holding asanas in the ocean breeze. Each morning, Malibu Beach Inn hosts a class in the sand at Carbon Beach, giving guests the chance to wake up and start the day in a state of Zen peace. Even better: it’s mere steps from the hotel, where a delicious breakfast or brunch at Carbon Beach Club awaits, featuring plenty of options that will maintain that healthy glow through the day.

Stress Free Coastal Biking

If your version of serenity involves some sort of movement, Malibu Beach Inn makes a perfect starting point for a bike ride. There’s a two-mile dedicated bike lane along the PCH near Zuma Beach, but if competing with car traffic isn’t your idea of calming, then picking up the Marvin Braude Bike Trail is crucial. The path runs an astonishing 22 miles from Will Rogers State Beach in nearby Pacific Palisades all the way down to Torrance County Beach, through famed neighborhoods and towns like Santa Monica, Venice, and Manhattan Beach. Rent two wheels (and a helmet!) and follow the coast.

Find Your Zen

Malibu is a town of nooks and crannies, of bays and trails, places where you can decompress – even if for just an hour. And accordingly, it’s also a place that loves meditation, that practice of quieting and focusing the mind. If you’ve got your own practice, there’s plenty of hidden beach space where you can hide from the wider world. If you’re a beginner or just prefer a guide, there are plenty of options in town as well, including dedicated studios and more general wellness centers. It’s no surprise that a town with 20 miles of coastline specializes in whole-body wellness. Whether it’s meditation alone or a couples massage, Malibu has plenty of options for the wellness traveler. And with the calming sounds of the surf acting as the unofficial soundtrack of Malibu Beach Inn, it’s the place to seek serenity.

  • Renée Levin brings her oil paints to Malibu Beach Inn as Artist in Residence starting March 7, with the unveiling of her new piece “She Resurrects” on March 10.
  • Guests can watch her work as she creates a piece inspired by a flower found in the fire zone from last year’s Palisade Fire.
  • When in town, check out the work of some of our favorite Malibu artists.

It’s been a little more than a year since the Palisades Fire ravaged Pacific Palisades and parts of Malibu. In many ways, life has returned to normal: the Pacific Coast Highway has reopened, rebuilding has started, and surfers are returning to the waves.

But the emotional healing is ongoing. And if there’s one vehicle through which we often express our pains and our hope, our fears and desires, it’s art.

Entrance to Malibu Beach Inn overlooking the ocean

That’s why Malibu Beach Inn is proud to welcome painter Renée Levin to its Artist in Residence program from March 7 to March 10, as she creates her newest work, “She Resurrects.”

The large-scale oil painting will be based on a morning glory wildflower that the artist found in the foothills which burned last year during the fire. Guests will be able to watch her create this symbol of hope and rebirth over those four days, culminating in an unveiling on March 10 and then in the Inn’s art collection for the following six months.

“She Resurrects” is the latest in Levin’s Impertinence series, a collection of works that examines the constant march of time and its impact on life. Enlarged floral forms allow viewers to think both literally and figuratively about the subject and that time in the flora’s lifecycle, the fleeting nature of life, and the beauty of a singular moment.

Levin’s work has earned her write-ups in Vogue and Barron’s and exhibitions around the country. Her stay at Malibu Beach Inn is her first west coast residency, and will finish with the unveiling of “She Resurrects” at the end of her stay. From there, the piece will remain at the Inn for six months and will be available for purchase for $5,400.

As the Malibu community grows stronger in the wake of the fires of 2025, Levin’s wildflower represents a reminder that there can be beauty in ash, strength within suffering, and love among ruins.

Seagulls flying on the beach and a tile City of Malibu sign

It’s no shock that a town as stunning as this Southern California gem would be the home to so many Malibu artists, drawn to the beauty of its ocean and hills. After experiencing the new work by Levin (and the other art on offer at Malibu Beach Inn), we recommend checking out the work of several local artists who capture elements of the town in multiple media.

Lori Mills: The oil painter is a mainstay at galleries around town and elsewhere, while also running the Malibu Contemporary Art Gallery in nearby Westlake Village. Her work is inspired by the beauty of Malibu and California as a whole and tends to be as calming as staring out into the Pacific Ocean.

Carlos Gauna: The photographer and videographer has shot on location around the world, but he clearly reserves his passion for his home. His nature photography focuses on the town’s beaches, including stunning images of lifeguard stations, surfers, and even the Malibu Pier, often with a gorgeous sunset in the background. His work has been featured by outlets like National Geographic and the BBC, among many others.

Pamela LeGrand: Water has been a constant in LeGrand’s life: she arrived in Malibu from Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes. Now, she’s turned her gaze (and oil paints) towards the beach, both in widescreen tableau and minute detail. She also creates adorable custom dog portraits, if you’d like to see her work (and your best friend!) on your walls. The works of these craftspeople, along with those of so many other Malibu artists, can be found throughout the city at galleries and in shops. Supporting local artisans and small businesses while shopping in Malibu is one of the best ways both to give back to the community and to experience the town’s atmosphere, culture, and beating heart.

·  The ultimate Malibu itinerary for four unforgettable days: From oceanfront relaxation at Malibu Beach Inn to iconic dining, culture, and coastal adventure, this curated guide takes the guesswork out of planning.

·  Beach days, bold flavors, and cultural gems: Surf Carbon Beach, dine at Nobu, explore the Adamson House, and experience Malibu’s vibrant live music scene.

·  Mountains to martinis, sunrise to sunset: Hike the Santa Monica Mountains, shop local boutiques, savor walkable beach lunches, and return each evening to the comfort of your oceanfront retreat.

For some, a vacation is a time to sleep in, a time to lilt through a new location, a time to let the day come to them. For others, the Scouts say it best: Be Prepared.

For that latter group, we thought we’d help with some plans.

Malibu has so many adventures waiting that it can feel like dining at a restaurant with 50 entrees on the menu – the paralysis of choice is real! But with the Pacific Coast Highway now reopened, the road to our beach paradise is easier than ever to navigate. Give us four days, and we can give you a Malibu itinerary covering a wide range of what makes the town so special.

The breezeway at Malibu Beach Inn showing the ocean at dusk during check-in on a Malibu itinerary.

Day 1:

Whether you’ve arrived at Malibu Beach Inn after a short drive to the coast up the PCH or a long assortment of planes, trains, and automobiles, it’s time to relax and decompress. Thankfully, there’s plenty of ways to do that without leaving the hotel. Take a quick walk down to Carbon Beach and take in a spectacular sunset (in the winter, it usually happens right around check-in time). Get your toes in the sand and feel connected with the destination. Then, head back upstairs and grab dinner at Carbon Beach Club. The restaurant’s emphasis on local sourcing comes through in nearly every dish, with the freshest of ingredients. Following your meal, retire to your room where you can still enjoy the ocean breeze while snacking on a charcuterie board or sipping a cocktail from the Club’s bar. After all, you’ve got to rest up for the days ahead.

Day 2:

If you were patient enough to make it through the first night without jumping in the ocean, then now’s the time! The water’s always fine for any number of fun ocean activities: surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, swimming, or just wading out toward the horizon.

Once back on solid land, it’s time for a midday meal – and in Malibu, the best lunch is one you can walk with. Eating while enjoying the surfside scenery is a great way to relax (and relaxing helps digestion, too!). Some suggestions: Lily’s, a mile off of Zuma Beach, is famed for its burritos – but on weekends, don’t sleep on the café’s tamales. Closer to the Inn, Basqueria sells a limited number of sandwiches each day depending on the chef’s whims (they tend to sell out before noon, so get there quickly!) and is an easy walk from Malibu Lagoon State Beach.

And since you’ve gotten a quick lunch, splurge a little later on dinner. Malibu has a tremendous culinary scene, especially in terms of diversity of cuisines. Lucky’s is a traditional steakhouse that occasionally hosts big-name celebrities (various members of the House of Kardashian, for instance, have been spotted here). Taverna Tony’s makes standout Greek food in a lively atmosphere. And then, of course, there’s the famed Nobu, just steps from the Inn, with chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s Japanese-Peruvian fusion menu. You could return to a Malibu vacation scores of times and never run out of great restaurants to visit.

Overhead view of beautifully plated dishes and wine at Carbon Beach Club.

Day 3:

After spending a full day admiring the sights, sounds, and smells of the beach, the third day is a great time to take in some of Malibu’s great cultural institutions. Start the day with a little history by visiting the Adamson House, which boasts a large collection of original Malibu tile. That artisan work made its way around the world – quite a feat for the 1920s and 30s.

In the afternoon, head east to Villa Getty which, while technically in the Pacific Palisades, is still a Malibu-area must-see. A large collection of Greek and Roman antiquities resides here, on stunning grounds modeled after a large Roman country estate. Download the GettyGuide for your smartphone before arriving, and it’s like having your own pocket docent as you tour the exhibits.

In the evening, cross the street from the Inn (seriously – it’s practically next door) and see who’s on the bill at Aviator Nation Dreamland. The Venice, CA-founded clothing brand took over the former Crazy Horse Saloon (which may or may not have been co-owned by Neil Young) and are continuing the tradition with interesting musicians (who often play much larger rooms elsewhere) and a great cocktail menu.

Hiking trails around Malibu overlooking the Santa Monica Mountains and the beaches.

Day 4:

Most people, when thinking about Malibu, imagine a beach vista. But the Santa Monica Mountains have their own charm, as well, and leaving town without a hike along one of the area’s many trails would be missing a major opportunity. Wander through Charmlee Wilderness Park, with its eight miles of paths, or take it easy with a walk through the Point Dume Natural Preserve.

And before heading home, pick up a keepsake at one of Malibu’s many boutiques. Surfing Cowboys, at Malibu Village, has plenty of homages to the board lifestyle, and the neighboring Malibu Country Mart has a great blend of local and national brands.

Malibu is a choose-your-own-adventure book of fun, with a little something for every taste. Whether it’s indulging in the natural beauty of the ocean or the Santa Monica Mountains, dining at some of the country’s finest restaurants, or engaging with mind-expanding art, visitors have so much to explore. But you can also visit the oceanside hamlet for relaxation and recharging, too. Malibu Beach Inn serves as the ideal basecamp to absorb all the destination has to offer. Think of this Malibu itinerary as a sampling platter, a little bit of many of the activities that make the town a favorite for travelers of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Malibu is more than postcard-worthy beach views. There’s plenty to see and do in the town and surrounding area that doesn’t involve the sand or the sea.
  • Boutique stores, parks off the beaten path, and works of art dot the landscape here, filling out a list of things to do in Malibu.
  • Plan an adventure that goes beyond the beach! (while still spending some quality time on the sand)

Malibu attracts more than eight figures worth of visitors each year, and many of them arrive ready to hit the beach. There are plenty of reasons why: the sand-side recreation is second to none, the climate is consistently perfect, and the ocean air is clean and cleansing.

But a trip to the ‘Bu would be incomplete without checking out the many, many hidden gems, off-the-beaten-path adventures, and local boutiques on offer in the oceanside town. Here is a small selection of our favorites.

Inn of the Seventh Ray:

Really, this entry could include most of Topanga Canyon, the colony of artisans and others centered around the titular canyon road that starts about five miles west on the PCH from Malibu Beach Inn’s front doors. The Ray is one of the standouts of the Canyon, with its emphasis on local ingredients all along its new American, multifaceted menu. There’s also a reason that it’s been used often as a wedding venue: the property itself is gorgeous, with dining available along a creek, in a gazebo, and from other scenic seats.

View from Paramount Ranch

Paramount Ranch:

For the longest time, this film ranch – where scenes from “Westworld”, “The X-Files”, and even 1932’s “A Farewell to Arms” were filmed – acted as a living monument to Tinseltown history. Sadly, 2018’s Woolsey Fire destroyed many of the observable artifacts from those shows and others, but there’s still plenty of parking and hiking to be had, and it’s also a favorite spot for horseback riding lessons. Just 12 miles away from the front doors of the Inn, the Ranch is a lovely outdoor setting that is as evocative of the West in person as it is on all those TV shows and movies.

view of the Malibu village sign near the beach

Surfing Cowboys:

It’s hard to describe this boutique, just steps from Malibu Beach Inn in the Malibu Village Mall. It carries clothing, both its own designs and vintage gear, but it’s also a repository of surf- and skate-themed art, jewelry, and nostalgic local memorabilia. No matter your favorite era of Malibu, the west, or surfing, you’ll find something aesthetically pleasing. It’s both a perfect and a deadly “just looking” experience: fun to explore and peruse, but almost certain to end in a bagful of new goods to bring home.

Legacy Park:

Beachside parks get most of the attention here, but this walking trail and “living learning center,” as the city calls it, is a Malibu, California attraction worthy of an afternoon of exploration as well. Located a mile from Malibu Beach Inn, the park sits at the intersection of prairies, bluffs, woodland, and wetland, making it a rare chance to explore several habitats at once. It’s a great location to take the kids (especially those who are learning about the natural world in school) or just get some steps in after a meal at Carbon Beach Club.

People sitting on the lawn at the Malibu Country Mart

Kirk’s for the Home:

The easiest way to bring a piece of Malibu back home is by finding a perfect gift – for others or for yourself – at the newest addition to Malibu Country Mart. Showcasing local artisans alongside a thoughtfully curated mix of new and vintage home goods, the shop feels both elevated and effortlessly coastal. From sculptural accents and soulful ceramics to timeless textiles and found treasures, each piece tells a story. Kirk’s is the kind of place that encourages lingering—and will make you wish you’d arrived with an empty suitcase, ready to be filled with one-of-a-kind finds inspired by Malibu living.

woman sitting on the balcony

With Carbon Beach just beyond our doors, the ocean is an ever-present muse—but the charms of our slice of coastal paradise go far beyond the surf. Perfectly positioned in the heart of it all, Malibu Beach Inn offers more than a place to stay. It offers a front-row seat to the authentic rhythms of life and things to do in Malibu. Whether your days are spent exploring hidden gems or simply savoring the stillness between adventures, our storied stretch of coastline invites you to experience Malibu as it was meant to be discovered.
