The alter ego of Spider-Man, Peter Parker, became a superhero when he was bitten by an irradiated spider that injected radioactive chemicals into his body, giving him superhuman strength and agility, the ability to cling to most surfaces and thus run up walls, and a spider-sense that warns him of danger. You’ve probably been bitten by an irradiated spider yourself, so you know how it goes.
With that background, we get to today’s question: How do Spider-Man’s abilities stack up against those of a real spider?

Spider-Man is famed for his web-suspended swings from building to building over city streets. You can find examples of equally amazing leaps and bounds among real arachnids if you take a look at jumping spiders. In a single leap some jumping spiders can cover more than 30 times their own body length. It does so by using a powerful internal muscle that blasts fluids from the body into the legs, flinging the spider through the air. If the current holder of the official world record for the long jump, Norwegian Arne Tvervaag, could make a comparable leap, he’d cover about 200 feet from a standing start; instead his record, set in 1968, is 12 feet, 2 inches.
Thanks to a stick-to-almost-anything skin, Spider-Man can walk up walls. So can most spiders (if you’re a tarantula, your size makes this difficult—you’re better off staying on the ground). Each leg of a spider capable of climbing walls ends in a brushy covering of hair, and the end of each hair is in turn covered with microscopic organs that can take hold of small bumps in most surfaces, allowing the spider to go up walls and even across ceilings. This ability may be ‘de-feeted’ (no pun intended; okay, it was intended) by very smooth surfaces, such as that of a bathroom sink.
Spider-Man is able to sense danger lurking near, the warning signal coming as a pain in his head that varies with the intensity of the threat. Spiders can detect danger coming their way with an early-warning system called eyes. You probably expected that. But that’s not all: one of their most important sources of information about the world and its hazards comes from highly sensitive hairs that cover the bodies of most spiders. These hairs perceive even low-level vibrations coming through the air, including sound.

Spider-Man can fire strands of web from his wrists. Early in his career, he invented devices for doing this, but in later incarnations he developed biological adaptations that allowed him to make webs naturally. He can capture villains with the sticky stuff and use it like ropes for swinging from building to building.
Real spiders produce several types of webs—some that are not sticky but serve as a superstructure for webs, some that are sticky and capture prey, some used for wrapping up prey in neat little packages (which, in some species, are given as gifts by males to females while courting; whether Spider-Man has super gift-giving powers remains unrecorded). Some smaller spiders produce a gossamer web, used as a sort of sail that catches the wind and can carry a spider far and wide, which probably explains in part why spiders are found almost everywhere in the world.
Spider silk comes from glands on the arachnid’s posterior, with different silks produced by different types of glands. Some silks are comparable in strength relative to weight to high-grade alloy steel and can stretch up to four times their relaxed length without breaking. Made basically of protein and water, the silk is extremely lightweight once it dries. A single strand long enough to encircle the globe would weigh about 1 pound 2 ounces.

Here are six species traditionally considered spooky or scary – that actually need a little help from us.

Our diverse and unique public lands in the United States are home to special habitats and ecosystems that may not exist anywhere else in the world – which means that they’re also home to species that don’t exist elsewhere.
The spruce-fir moss spider, the world’s smallest tarantula, only lives in the highest elevations of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Its world matches its size: This tiny spider thrives in a microclimate of moss mats on boulders kept damp by Fraser fir trees above the boulders.
While the spruce-fir moss spider makes spooky cobwebs for itself to attract prey, that doesn’t mean the species as a whole is thriving. An invasive insect has been killing the Fraser fir trees responsible for keeping the spider’s mossy home damp. The double threats of climate change and habitat loss through logging are hurting this arachnid, too, which is why it’s been listed as endangered since 1995.

Infested with disease and blood-sucking with a penchant for human victims? It’s pretty batty that bats are the only mammals that can fly, but U.S. bat species aren’t anything like Count Dracula. While bats do host a number of viruses that can be transmitted from animals to humans, they don’t roam the skies looking for people to infect with disease – if anything, they want to keep their distance from us, but sometimes habitat loss gets in the way of that. Giving bats lots of space and staying out of their habitat reduces disease transmission, and human cases of rabies are very, very rare.
In fact, bats help humans out big-time – little brown bat colonies can consume thousands of pounds of insects each year, including crop pests that cause problems for farmers.
The scary truth about little brown bats is that their U.S. populations have declined by 90% over the course of a decade due to white-nose syndrome, a fungus that grows on their skin and causes hibernation problems, dehydration, starvation, and death. As one of the most common bat species in the U.S., it’s concerning that even little brown bats need proactive conservation actions thanks to how much white-nose syndrome has decimated their colonies.
Like most wildlife species, little brown bats can benefit when people build havens like bat houses in their yards for them – and if you want to help them, taking other steps to Garden for Wildlife is effective, too.

The most common wildcat in the U.S., bobcats tend to make themselves scarce – it’s quite rare for a human to spot them. However, that doesn’t mean they’re assisting witches with occult activities in the dead of night. Instead, they prefer to hunt at night. Like many other predators at the top of food webs, bobcats act as a keystone species in their ecosystems – they keep other populations of wildlife in check and prey on sick or weakened individuals.
While bobcats are not federally listed as threatened or endangered, they’re still dealing with the threats that all wildlife face these days: climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and more. The beauty of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, which has been introduced in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives by a bipartisan group of senators and representatives, is that it allocates resources to states to take proactive action to conserve wildlife before they need the emergency-room protections of the Endangered Species Act.
State fish and wildlife agencies are experts on the challenges facing wildlife in their states. For example, in New Jersey, The Nature Conservancy partnered with the Division of Fish & Wildlife to restore habitat for bobcats, which nearly went extinct in the state. We think that’s pretty meow-some!

Spending part of its year in the Southwestern U.S., the common black hawk cuts a formidable figure and feeds on other spooky critters, including frogs and lizards.
Thanks to climate change, the West has been increasingly dealing with droughts and water shortages. This problem is hurting wildlife and humans alike – the common black hawk, for example, only lives and hunts near flowing streams in the U.S. portion of its range. It also spends its time near streams courting and raising young, so the presence of water is vital to its life cycle.
Smart water management is important to adapting to climate change for both Western communities and wildlife. Read more about the National Wildlife Federation’s work to conserve Western watersheds and rivers here.

While the handsome black pinesnake might seem like it would be at home in a dungeon or creepy crypt, it actually lives in the sunny longleaf pine forests of the Southeastern U.S.
Once one of the most sprawling ecosystems in the U.S., longleaf pine forests only exist in 3-4% of their historical range today due to development, habitat fragmentation, and fire suppression. Fire plays a critical role in the longleaf pine ecosystem – it keeps the forest floor free of hardwood tree species, allowing wildlife species to build nests and dig burrows in the sandy soil. Black pinesnakes spend much of their time in burrows and even hunt small mammals by trapping them in tunnels and squeezing their bodies against the tunnel wall, trapping and suffocating their prey. Clearly, the longleaf pine forest is critical for the long-term survival of the black pine snake. Since 2007, the National Wildlife Federation and Alabama Wildlife Federation have collaborated with private landowners to restore this incredible habitat so that these snakes can do what they do best – scaring the smaller members of their food chain. Wood frogs, which primarily call Alaska and the Northeast home in the U.S., are practically members of the living dead – during winter, they literally freeze and later reanimate. How do they pull this off? Well, they stop breathing and their hearts stop beating, but they produce a special glycerol-based substance that acts as antifreeze and prevents ice from forming within their cells. If the water within a cell were to freeze, it would expand and the ice crystals would tear the cell apart, killing the frog. Through this process, nearly 70 percent of the frog’s total body water is converted to ice. This adaptation allows the wood frog to survive even in the Arctic.
Despite this preternatural trick, life isn’t all treats for wood frogs and other amphibians. In fact, amphibians are the most threatened class of vertebrates on the planet. With semipermeable skin and porous eggs laid in vernal, or seasonal, pools of water, wood frogs are at a higher risk of being affected by pollution, climate change, and disease. In other words, we’ve got to keep our land, air, and water clean so this friendly zombie can keep freezing itself to its heart’s content!
If you also agree that the threats facing these species are goosebump-raising, then we’ve got the perfect action for you to take. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act was drafted to help all of these species and so many more by investing in conservation work done in every state and by federally recognized tribal nations. This legislation needs as many congressional champions as possible. Tell your representative and senator to cosponsor Recovering America’s Wildlife Act today so that all of these amazing, spooky species can get back to what they do best – sending shivers up our spines!

For thousands of years frogs have been associated with folklore, sorcery, and wizardry. Most commonly associated with witches for potions of poison and aphrodisiacs, these tricksters of the wild have the unique ability to transform their entire bodies from a water dwelling species into an air breathing amphibian. This metamorphosis from tadpole to frog symbolizes revolution and the recreation of life. But how do gills evolve into air breathing lungs?
Tadpoles transform in a matter of months; growing beyond their gelatinous eggs and entering into the muddy waters of the predatorial abyss. Propelled by their tails, they begin their life by breathing through their gills. After 10 weeks, they develop legs, distinctive tongues, and their tails begin to recede. The whole process takes 3 months before they are prepared for their next journey onto land.
No Halloween is complete without creatures of the night, and Mother Nature doesn’t disappoint. The epitome of wildlife symbolism in Halloween is the bat. But life in the shadows is not the only trick this mammal has up its sleeve. They can pinpoint objects as thin as human hair in complete darkness via echolocation.
Echolocation, a language of sound and refraction, is the use of sound waves and echoes to determine where objects are in space. Bats produce a sound that echoes and bounces off objects, transferring the sound back into the bats ears. They use this revolutionary sound system to determine size, shape, and location of prey and other objects.
Science often takes tips from the animal kingdom. The development of sonar and radar navigation used by the military is based off of bat echolocation. The main difference is that sonar is used underwater, though the principals are the same.
Spawning from the German word “spinne”, the name spider means “spinner”. These creatures are considered to be endowed with superstitious qualities, predominantly due to their ability to weave webs- a symbol of mystery, protection, fate, and death.
Spiders create silk for many purposes: to capture their prey, protect their offspring, and provide shelter. Also, not all spiders use silk the same way. Did you know spiders can weave different kinds of webs? Different webs include spiral orb, tangle or cobwebs, funnel webs, and sheet webs.
According to The book of Animal Ignorance: Everything you Know is Wrong, spider silk is oddly lightweight. A strand long enough to circle the world would weigh the same as a bar of soap. Here are a few examples of different webs:
Another commonly nocturnal species associated with Halloween are owls. Though it’s s a myth that they can rotate their necks 365 degrees, they can in fact rotate their necks 270 degrees. This goes to show what a hoot owls really are.
Because their eyes are tubular, giving them telescope vision, they cannot easily move their eyes. Thus, sparking the evolutionary characteristic of extreme dexterity. But, how do they spin their heads without snapping their necks, tearing their arteries, or forming blood clots? Unlike the human anatomy, owl’s vertebrae contain air sacs that cushion the twisting head. Where blood vessels in humans get smaller as they become branched, owls get larger.

The golden poison dart frog is only one of three dart frogs with poison lethal to humans. It is reported that an amount of poison equal to 2-3 grains of table salt is enough to cause the death of a human.
Banana slugs have primitive eyesight, which means they can only see light, dark and movement. The eyes fold in when they sense a shadow. Also, please don’t lick them; I’m sure they don’t like it.
Bearded dragons have a beard of spikes and thorns that they’ll puff out at predators as a defense mechanism. Also, when in danger, these lizards will run on the hind legs.
These spiders jump on their prey, ambush style, which means they don’t have a reason to spin webs.
Female tamarins usually give birth to twins and sometimes triplets. That’s a lot of weight to carry around alone, which is why the father and siblings share the load.
These snakes are arboreal, which means they climb trees. Like the black rat snake, they are non-venomous constrictors that suffocate their prey.
A goldfinch’s diet is vegetable based, and they are the strictest vegetarians in the bird world (aside from an occasional insect cheat meal).
Seahorses are unique creatures not only have a kangaroo-like pouch, but the dads are the ones to have the babies.
Fiery skipper have the ability to hold their wings in a triangular position, which is thought to help better absorb the sun’s rays.
The name implies that they should look more gold, but I decided to include them anyway. Mostly I wanted to tell you that despite being the largest bird of prey in North America, golden eagles can dive upon their victim at speeds over 150 miles per hour!
What else is there to say, just enjoy this golden pile of fluff.

Did you know Washington is home to sixteen of the world’s 900+ species of bats? While most commonly associated with comic book superheroes or blood-sucking vampires, bats are actually a critical part of Washington’s ecosystems. They dine on hundreds of insects a night in the summer, controlling pest populations and providing fertilizer and seed dispersal for our forests and other ecosystems. Fact: Bats make their homes in hollow trees and snags as well as caves. You can also put up bat houses.
Fact: Bats are mammals! And they are more similar to humans than they are to rodents such as mice.
Fact: Nine of Washington’s bat species are listed as state Species of Special Concern or as Federal Candidate Category 2 species, which means we lack enough information to list them under the Endangered Species Act even though listing may be appropriate. The Townsend’s Big-eared bat, for example, is one of the rarest bats in Puget Sound. According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, whole colonies of these cave-dependent species have disappeared after human disturbance.
You can help bats! By providing habitat with trees, snags, and bat houses, minimizing pesticide use, avoiding roosting bats, supporting bat research, practicing responsible bat watching, and much more, you can help sustain our beautiful and essential bat populations.

Owls have held a mysterious appeal for humans for thousands of years, appearing in myths, legends and superstitions, often as harbingers of death or as symbols of wisdom. Maybe we find owls fascinating because of their large eyes, silent flight, nocturnal habits and their disconcerting
Fact: Most sources agree that an owl can turn its head just 3/4 or 270 degrees around, which is still impressive.
Fact: Nope, the ears are located on the side of the head, just like in people. However, the ears may be uneven, allowing the birds to locate prey by triangulating with sound when vision isn’t enough. The tufts are thought to be useful in camouflaging the bird as well as expressing aggression.
If you need a costume idea for next year, consider lamprey! The lamprey is a culturally-important species for many Pacific Northwest Tribes, who harvest the fish for subsistence, ceremonial, and medicinal purposes. All three species have been suggested for listing as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Despite their importance, myths persist about their feeding and habitat preferences.
Fact: Four lamprey species are native to the Columbia Basin and two of them – Pacific and river lamprey – are anadromous, meaning they live in both fresh and saltwater. The other two, Western brook and Pacific brook lamprey, are freshwater species. All lamprey play an important role in the freshwater stream ecosystem, recycling nutrients by filtering microscopic plants and animals from the bottom sediments.
Fact: Pacific and river lamprey are parasitic, but only in the ocean phase of their life cycle. They are also food for sharks and sea lions! Western brook and Pacific brook lamprey are not parasites.
From horror movies with giant spiders to the fear of spiders known as arachnophobia, spiders are among the most feared and misunderstood creatures common to the Pacific Northwest. In truth, spiders are quite important for managing pests and generally avoid contact with us.
Fact: Only one of the three groups called daddy-longlegs – the Pholcid spiders – has venom and there is no evidenceit is fatal. Also, what many term daddy-longlegs are actually crane
flies or harvestmen, neither of which have venom.
Fact: It seems spiders actually get stuck on the smooth surfaces common to sinks and tubs after they have come down from a wall or ceiling.
Fact: Spiders are identified by their structure and a microscope is often needed to do so.

Snakes are fascinating. I devoured every book and Discovery channel show I could find on them as a child. I learned that yes, snakes shed their skin, but no, they do not roll into a big “O” and roll away from you. I’ve even had the opportunity to hold a garter snake and feel the muscles of an albino python around my neck. My love and curiosity about snakes remains today. Here are some other cool myths and facts about snakes in the Pacific Northwest.
Fact: There is no evidence that garter snakes, or any of the other snakes common to the Pacific Northwest, swallow their young. Garter snakes do, however, give birth to live young. And this winter, you are unlikely to see many snakes because most species will be hibernating.
Fact: Snakeskin is actually dry and relatively smooth. Amphibians such as frogs and salamanders, on the other hand, have moist skin to allow water and other nutrients to pass through.
Fact: Washington is home to the rubber boa, a 14-30 inch long relative of the world’s largest snakes! It is not often seen, but may be found damp wooded areas, camouflaged by its olive-green or red to brown skin.

They are so frightening to so many people that their images have become a constant for Halloween. They even have their own psychiatric condition: Arachnophobia
Bats have become associated with blood sucking vampires. They are mostly nocturnal and certain species (vampire bats) do indeed draw blood in small amounts from animals for food. This make them seem scary but they do not harm humans. There are other things about bats you should know.
They are associated with bad luck. If one crosses your path, legend has it you are in for hard times or a mishap. Black domestic cats are fairly common in the U.S. but you have to go pretty far to find a true American black cat. The Jaguar may be the best candidate.
Halloween is surely a time for family fun and maybe even a little outdoor (spooky) time with the kids. But it is also a time to appreciate the fascinating and complex creatures that we love to make us scared. These “scary” creatures pose no real threat to humans and many are suffering from the effects of habitat loss, pollution and more.
