When the protective outer layer of your hair (aka the hair cuticle) is damaged either from chemical stress (like color or bleach) or mechanical stress (ie. heat from styling tools), the inner core of the proteins that make up the hair, is left exposed; making it vulnerable to breakage and splitting.
A “split” it’s rarely clean or even. When placed under a microscope, it’s been seen that the strands looks more like a piece of splintered wood, with many rough ridges and edges.
Whilst the only way to get rid of split ends is to get regular hair trims, we can absolutely conceal their appearance and prevent the formation of future ones.
Moral of the story is this:
Setting the right expectation is key – hair masks and treatments can NOT “get rid” of split ends, but they are none the less very important for the future health of your hair.
Some helpful ingredients in your kitchen are:
In the latest hair DIY for this, I mixed the following:
¼ cup sweet almond oil
¼ cup vegetable glycerin
1 capsule pantothenic acid
¼ cup Argan oil
Measurements can be adjusted to fit your hair length, but the ratios should remain the same.
Sweet almond oil is hydrating and won’t weigh hair down.
Vegetable glycerin helps strengthen the hair, making it less prone to breakage.
Pantothenic acid helps strengthen hair, retain moisture and improve texture.
Argan oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E & deeply moisturizing.
Remember to always patch test 1st and make sure you don’t have any allergies to ingredients.
Now let’s talk about some lifestyle choices you can make, to ensure the integrity of your hair:
That’s it for today!

Keratosis pilaris is not well understood, but often genetic & tends to disappear after the age of 30.
Blueberries have a high concentration of salicylates (aka the salt of salicylic acid). Salicylic acid is widely used in topical acne products because of its ability to remove dead skin, open clogged pores and act against bacteria.
Strawberries are rich in vitamin C – aka one of the most effective antioxidants, as well as alpha lipoic acid. Together, they not only protect skin from free radicals but help brighten it. Strawberries are powerful hydrators and skin-softeners as well. This could also be used as an exfoliating mask for acne-prone skin.

I had so many questions for Karen, I had to categories them by aging, acne, pigmentation, etc. – to stay on track & be able to answer questions as they were trickling down in the feed too. Judging by the response during & after, you were very happy & the LIVE was a success. That makes my heart jump.
So what’s the difference between an esthetician and a Master esthetician?
In short, Master estheticians get additional training in esthetics, which allows them to perform a wider range of services than the standard estheticians can. That usually means double the hours of school and/or apprenticeship. In California (and in other states like Arkansas, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming for example), you need 600 hours in order to apply for the state board exam. In other states you may need more or less.
What was SHOCKING to me
however, was learning that Florida for example (huge state right?!) requires ONLY 250 hours to get your license YET they include procedures like microneedling & dermaplaning as part of the scope of work. Those things are NOT legal for estheticians in California to perform yet the Cali professionals spend an additional 350 hours studying and practicing. If you’re in Florida, I’d be very cautious if I were you & would stick to seeing MDs, NPs, or RNs.
Karen here today is a Master esthetician – A few states (Washington State, Utah, Virginia and Washington, DC) recognize this two-tier license. Additional training & education or apprenticeship is required to become a licensed master esthetician (roughly an additional 600 hours) and in these states, the master estheticians are permitted to perform more advanced skincare services that often include: Ultrasound & light/radio/laser frequency procedures, Medium-depth chemical peels & Lymphatic drainage.
You heard right!
Regular estheticians in most states cannot perform Lymphatic drainage. If they do it, there’s a risk that it’s A) outside the scope of work & therefore illegal and B) they do it without any FORMAL TRAINING- and could have learned by watching YouTube videos as far as you know. Advanced course/program approved by their respective regulatory agency would be needed for this. So be smart & informed – ALWAYS ASK ABOUT THEIR TRAINING & look up what procedures are in the “scope of work” for your state.
I’ve seen estheticians spread misinformation, share poor disinfecting protocols & do procedures they’re learned from Allure magazine so I’m telling you, this s**t will make your skin crawl.
I’m “going there” because while I LIVE to build up & empower people, I draw a clear line at misinformation & cannot tolerate that regardless of licenses or diplomas. I also want to make sure that you as my friend and a consumer, are well informed & alert and if you ask me – for any services like the ones mentioned above, stick to MDs, NPs, or RNs and don’t believe somebody “just because” they’re an esthetician. Subscribe to industry publications, take online classes, educate yourself more so you don’t fall pray to unscrupulous practitioners.
Back to Karen! I really appreciated all her feedback & hope that you’ll enjoy all the takeaways. During the LIVE some of you asked for a list of all the products that she mentioned, so here it is below. Thank you so much for watching & thank you for your support.

]]>So I came to 1 conclusion!
I have to share some of the more specific LIVES, in posts. Like the ones happening this week, about skincare.
Unfortunately IG couldn’t “save” this specific one (and why would it, I needed the extra work load ) so I had to record the screen as I replay it from stories. TBH that ended up being much better, because even though the comments look all out of order and at some point they no longer even load, at least we can see some of that activity and the beautiful faces of the people behind it. If the video would have been saved directly, none of that activity would be visible. So it’s all good!
Yesterday’s LIVE (Monday 4/6/20) is below.
The goal was to show you my morning skincare routine & answer some questions along the way. With Instagram giving LIVES a hard stop at 1 hour, I had to rush at the end and at one point I had to just show you which products I was planning on using and in what order, but not be able to demo. Just for the last few steps of the routine though, not awfully bad.
I’m cringing
…
…at how all over the place I was. It was a little hard to showcase, explain & follow a process, while reading comments and engaging in answers, and trying to make the responses as complete as possible. But I will work on this and promise to get better and far more efficient with my answers. Another thing – I edited this down, because an hour long video I thought would be a little too long.
While we’re in quarantine, you can count on my LIVES almost daily. They were daily actually for the first 3 weeks, but we’ll be here for a while and doing custom content daily, working on bringing guests, etc. took a toll on me after 3 weeks and I ended up feeling really exhausted so I’ll be taking 1 or 2 days off here and there.

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that causes bumps & redness on the face, usually on the cheeks & nose. It becomes more common with age, it can actually get worse if not properly treated & while there’s no “cure” for it, we can absolutely reduce its appearance & manage it so it doesn’t get more aggravated.
Here’s HOW TO MANAGE it:
1. Avoid the triggers:
– sun exposure
– spicy foods
– alcohol
– caffeine
– smoking
– extreme heat or cold (that includes hot showers and ice baths)
– stress (which can cause flares).
2. Use only gentle cleansers that are fragrance-free & hypoallergenic. Detergent-based cleansers can strip the skin’s lipids & barrier protection.
3. Apply sunscreen daily, with an SPF 30 or higher. I can’t stress this enough! The sun is THE WORST external trigger that can aggravate skin conditions as well as prematurely age the skin, so if one reason doesn’t convince you, the other should.
What to look for in a sunscreen (according to the American academy of dermatology):
– look for Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, or both as the source of protection (avoid chemical sunscreens at all cost).
– NO fragrance (label may say “fragrance free,” but if it says “unscented” choose another sunscreen).
– Broad-spectrum protection (that means both UVA and UVB coverage).
– SPF 30 or higher.
4. Avoid products that contain Alcohol, Menthol, Camphor, Glycolic acid, Lactic acid, Urea & Fragrance.
5. Choose fragrance-free, mineral-based makeup. A green corrector before applying foundation can help disguise the redness.
6. Look at your diet (this is HUGE!)
Aside from avoiding spicy foods, alcohol & caffeine, it would be also wise to:
HOW TO HELP CALM the skin:
STEP 1
Green tea cold compresses.
Green tea has many anti-inflammatory properties that could reduce redness & inflammation. I make about 4 cups worth of tea. I drink one, then refrigerate the rest for a morning compress-session, followed by an “end-of-day” evening session as well. Next day I repeat. Cold compresses are vasoconstricting, which means they constrict capillaries & blood flow.
Make sure to use a SOFT cotton cloth. Do this regularly to see better results.
STEP 2
Calming DIY mask.
Aloe Vera (ideally fresh from the aloe plant) & Honey (ideally fresh, organic, without any added sugar syrup, corn syrup or rice syrup). Additionally you can add or replace one or the other with cucumber (mixed in blender till mush).
Apply to affected areas & leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water (NOT hot or ice cold) & pat dry (don’t rub).
Aloe Vera is very useful for Rosacea skin, because it has anti-inflammatory effects while it helps relieve itching & burning in the affected areas.
Honey is perfect for Rosacea because it’s a natural humectant that pulls moisture from the air & into the skin.
STEP 3
Use a soothing, calming moisturizer & after spreading in over the skin, use controlled pressure to massage the skin with cold globes that will help calm blood flow & reduce redness.
Some favorites I have are: Aaveeno, Bioderma, Avene, Clinique, Ren skincare, Dr. Jart Cicapair line, EltaMD for sunscreen.
STEP 4
An additional option at night, is to mix 2-3 drops of chamomile, lavender, geranium or rose essential oils with Evening Primrose oil & either apply the mixture directly, mix it with your nighttime moisturizer or apply it on top, as the last step of the routine.
Evening Primrose has anti-inflammatory properties & thanks to the gamma-linolenic acid in its composition, it’s considered one of the BEST skincare ingredients for Rosacea skin.
Lastly:
Please always consult with a doctor. Give your skin the grace of properly caring for it. Find out if these remedies will work for you. Be gentle, be kind, less is more with Rosacea & should your doctor approve the above, try following as many (if not all :D) of the steps listed for a solid month and just see how your skin responds.

Let’s dive right in!
Spider veins are broken blood vessels (or enlarged blood vessels), right beneath the surface of the skin. They can develop in anyone and at any age. Genetics will play a big role in their development, but there are other causes as well:
Now that we went over all that, let’s talk about how we can help improve their appearance. Down the post there are also some effective preventative methods (to avoid future damage) and in-office procedures that can yield significant results.
Home Remedies:
Unlike doctor-procedures, DIYs will take longer to show results so you have to stay consistent. DIYs aren’t a “one-and-done” type of approaches, but rather a“stick to it consistently for 90 days before looking for improvements” lifestyle.
With that said – from all the research I’ve done, I encourage you (considering you’ve established that you don’t have any allergies) to try ALL THREE steps, twice a day. Morning and Evening.
1/2 tablespoon Horse Chestnut tincture.
7 tablespoons distilled Witch Hazel.
– store away from direct sunlight and make a fresh batch every other week.
Horse Chestnut helps strengthen spider veins and has anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling properties which can help with their appearance.
Witch hazel is a natural astringent that may help reduce the appearance of spider veins. The tannins it contains has antioxidant properties, which can help improve the appearance of large pores; DOUBLE-WHAMMY!!
3 tablespoons Calendula oil.
2 tablespoons Arnica oil.
15-20 drops German Chamomile essential oil.
– store away from direct sunlight.
PRO TIP:
Gently massage the oil into the affected areas for 10 minutes at a time; that would be ideal. Regular massage helps improve circulation and better move blood through the congested areas.
Calendula oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help address spider veins, varicose veins, rashes, eczema and other related skin conditions.
Arnica oil helps decrease inflammation and boost circulation, which may speed up the healing process.
German chamomile is rich in Vitamins A, B & C, matricin, all fantastic ingredients that help with spider veins. It’s gentle, has anti-inflammatory benefits and amazing soothing effects.
Mix 2-4 drops of Aloe Vera gel with your moisturizer.
In the morning, don’t forget to follow with sunscreen SPF 30+ regardless if it’s rain or shine. As long as it’s daytime, you NEED SUNSCREEN.
Aloe Vera has beneficial antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It may also help reduce redness.
WATCH THE DIY TUTORIAL:
Effective in-office procedures
Sclerotherapy
This proceduce injects sclerosing agents to help spider veins disappear (typically within a few weeks).
The injected material helps seal up the blood vessels, which causes the visible blood just under the skin to disappear.
Radiofrequency occlusion.
A small catheter is inserted into the vein, which delivers radiofrequency energy to the vein wall, causing it to heat, collapse and then shut.
Laser therapy.
Intense laser lights can destroy the problematic veins, but this is my least favorite method, since the laser can also damage the skin, making it sensitive during recovery.
The process can also get expensive since multiple sessions are often needed and the veins can return over time.
Intense pulled light.
IPL therapy uses special lights to penetrate deeper into the layers of skin without damaging the top layer. Similarly to laser therapy though, several sessions may be needed in order to achieve results.
Endovenous laser treatment.
This procedure inserts a small laser fiber into the vein. Pulses of light are then delivered inside the vein, causing it to collapse.
Prevention Tips
Here is the money part of today’s blog IMO, because these tips can also help those of us with varicose veins, eczema and even acne.

I get it!
But I also don’t want to have grandma skin, so I say we just deal with it, accept it, kick ass and make a few small changes here and there so our older selves can thank us!
Here are some critical mistakes that you should avoid more than vampires avoid garlic. Sorry, I’m Romanian; I couldn’t help myself! I shared some of these in a Facebook video, but I had to leave some out in order to keep that video under 20 minutes; so here they are – all of them – exclusively for you, my blog family.
Mistake #1
Looking down at your phone. Make it a habit to bring it slightly higher and avoid prominent neck wrinkles.
#2
Pursing your lips. Though it’s drinking with a straw, applying makeup or duck-lipping for selfies. The constant repetition leads to premature lip lines and you’ll look like you’ve been smoking for the past 20 years.
#3
Excessive running can cause:
“Runner’s Face”
– early sagging. More radical damage, that leads to a breakdown in collagen. TBH, I personally see this not only as good news for the face, but knees as well. Go instead for moderate exercise, basically working out at around 50% of your maximum heart rate.
#4
Steaming. I can’t with this and don’t understand why more people are not aware of it. And for heaven’s sake, WHY do some estheticians still use steam on their clients? Unless it’s used for the extraction of stubborn blemishes, steam should never come close to your skin! See this video for more about it.
#5
Not sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase. Even the softest cotton won’t be gentle enough and that can encourage fine lines & bonus: split ends.
#6
Sleep with the hair away from the face. Dirt from the day that accumulates in your hair, particles of hair products that perhaps contain fragrance, sulfates & other ingredients that would make your skin crawl, they will all rub from your hair onto the pillow and from the pillow onto your face. Solution? Pull the hair in a loose braid at night.
#7
Getting less than 7 hours of sleep.
If you’re a troubled sleeper, here are a bunch of tips that can help.
#8
Not managing stress. “Studies have shown that habitual worrying increases cortisol and promotes oxidative damage, which lead to premature aging.” I’ve made videos about how to manage stress by the way, they’re super practical and super effective, and they’re all on my YouTube channel. Just check out the Self Help playlist.
#9
Neglecting your neck, chest & hands – especially the back of the hands. Are you applying SPF there too?
Skincare doesn’t stop at the jawline.
#10
Using dirty makeup brushes. Dirty brushes and sponges don’t just lead to breakouts and acne, they actually cause premature lines & wrinkles. So lather those babies using a gentle shampoo and save yourself some premature grandma skin. Try cleaning them every week if you can.
#11
Not sanitizing your phone, glasses & everything else that comes in contact with your face.
Bacteria = breakouts = premature aging.
#12
Popping pimples. Aside from spreading bacteria which will inevitably lead to even more pimples, popping causes inflammation, irritation and damage to the integrity of the skin. Anytime you feel the impulse to pop, close your eyes and slooowly count to 5. The average lifespan of an impulse is 5 seconds.
#13
You’re not using antioxidants in your skincare routine & diet. Here’s a video I did that details antioxidants (what you HAVE to know) and another video, where I shared which foods are high in antioxidants (you’ll want to eat these!). That’s how you DOUBLE WHAMMY your anti-aging routine. Killer!!! You’ll look 30 on your 40th birthday!!
#14
Stop over-cleansing – it’s stripping the skin of its natural oils. Use a gentle (ideally creamy), non-foaming cleanser once a day at night and very little in the morning.
#15
Going to bed with makeup on. I mean… How much worse can it get!?
#16
You’re using gritty exfoliators.
The BEST and most gentle way to remove dead skin cells is by using AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and/or BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids). Don’t be confused, it all makes sense in the previous video I made about aging, you don’t want to miss it (check out minute 9:30)!
Gritty scrubs – that have things like kernels or seeds in their formula, cause irritation and inflammation that often leads to clogged pores (go figure!) brown spots and YEEEP – wrinkles.
#17
Over-exfoliating. Even when you’re using the right product, there’s still such thing as TOO MUCH of a good thing! Two to three times per week is just right.
#18
You’re using the same skincare products year-round.
The skin has completely different needs throughout the year, as well as the weather will be different each quarter, attacking the skin in various different ways. So the same routine year round won’t give you the results I know you want; instead try this:
In the WINTER time – focus on products that encourage hydration AND moisturization. They’re two different things; hydration pertains to the water content in the skin, moisturization relates to the oil production at the top. They are both important and NEITHER should be neglected, no matter the skin type.
SPRING – think of cleansing the pores and exfoliating winter flakiness.
SUMMER – focus on hydration and over the top sun protection. Make sun protection an obsession. Think also hats, sunglasses, driving gloves, etc.
FALL – is the perfect time to focus on summer sun damage. Dryness from exposure, damage from UV rays, infrared and heat.
#19
Thinking sunscreen should only be applied in the summer.
UV rays will be around as long as it’s daytime and the sun is in the sky. Even when clouds cover it, the UV rays will still travel and hit your skin. The same thing goes for thinking you don’t need sunscreen because you’re staying home. Light will bounce off reflective surfaces and make its way to your skin.
#20
Not moisturizing thinking you don’t have to, because you have oily skin.
BOGUS!
#21
Not incorporating oils in your routine. Check out the description of this video, for my oil recommendations for all skin types.
#22
Overusing skin products that have fragrances, irritating chemicals and alcohol agents.
#23
Drinking too much Alcohol.
#24
Smoking.
Both of these bad habits will dehydrate the skin and will speed up the rate of lines, wrinkles and sagging.
#25
Processed sugar. Please cut it down anytime you can. It actually attacks the elastin and collagen in the skin, leading to dull, dry, lifeless skin with premature wrinkles.
#26
Using a foamy cleanser or bar of soap.
The foaming agents traditionally speaking, strip the skin of its water & natural oil, which leads to buildup of dead skin cells & increased sebum production.
#27
You’re not double-cleansing. While that sounds “time-consuming”, it is actually the best way to get rid of all of the makeup, grime, dirt, sweat, excess oils and bacteria that built up on your face throughout the day.
Double cleansing uses a cleansing oil, balm or Micellar water to remove the makeup, then using a water-based cleanser to remove everything else.
#28
Not applying products in the correct order – think of products in term of consistency and start with the thinnest products (like toner and serum), working toward the thicker, creamier ones. Apply the eye cream before the moisturizer, to make sure it won’t have to work through any potential thick barrier.
If a product is too heavy, it can block the lighter products from penetrating into the skin and doing their jobs.
#29
Using the same moisturizer Day and Night.
The skin acts differently in the daytime, than it does at night so its needs will be different as well. Not to mention that many daytime moisturizers have SPF in their formula – why would you need sun protection at night? You can confuse the skin by doing this, and that can lead to potential damage & breakouts.
#30
Changing products too quickly. The skin needs a few weeks before acclimating to a new product & starting to yield those specific results. Changing a cream 30 days into using it before you think “it doesn’t work”, is not only misleading but it can irritate the skin and cause breakouts.

You’re leaving your face bare for more than a minute after cleansing. If you don’t immediately start applying your products after cleansing, you will dehydrate the skin.
So my dear friend… Which mistakes are you currently doing? If you avoid all of these you skin in 90 days will look years younger, I swear!!

Asking me to pick a favorite roller, I imagine feels like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. Imposs….
Oh wait!
All parents have a favorite, don’t they!?
In that case, I’ll go with this one.
This is literally and figuratively my favorite child. My golden roller. The one I reach for skincare needs daily, and with a bonus of using it when I have a migraine (which I’m not gonna lie, have been happening a lot lately; I think it’s the work load). Anywho!
It costs less than $11 and works with 1 AA battery. My favorite way to use it is with a sheet mask, sometimes just with moisturizer if I’m in a terrible rush.
In the evening, after using my golden child, I also go in with a 3D roller. The one I bought was this but unfortunately it’s been selling out a lot, so I found a similar one for you if you ever want to give 3D rolling a try. The reason I like this, is more for sculpting purposes. I like running it up the entire face, paying particular attention to the jawline and cheekbones. As skin tends to sag with age, this to me is like a daily gym that helps skin stay up even against time’s gravitational pull.
Next up is my cheapy baby. This puppy costs less than $6 and while it’s not the cutest and most fun out of the bunch, it’s definitely the one that stimulates circulation the most and the easiest to push products into the skin. Sometimes I use it in the morning with my serum, sometimes at night or on the weekend with a sheet mask.
There is no rule as to which one to use and when, it’s purely about what I believe my skin will feel best with, in that moment. And then I use that.
I also reach for my jade roller – typically on the weekends. I use it either in the morning before the body shop roller, or replace it with the 3D one, since I can use the larger head to roll really well underneath the chin. Doing that will help prevent a tragic turkey neck.
If you ask me, these are great places to start – I personally also cup and use micro-current. My routines are definitely a fit only for the skincare enthusiasts, and the girls & boys who understand that spending 10 minutes extra per day, will keep your skin looking youthful & glowing, and THAT’S worth it!
PS. I DON’T DERMA-ROLL!
New studies are showing that while dermarolling yields amazing results, those results are only short-term. With extended use (around 10+ yrs), scientists are noticing the skin that dermarolled looking significantly more weathered down than the skin that was not exposed to the procedure. While the science needs more work, I’ve seen enough to put the procedure (dermarolling NOT microneedling which is still shown to be fabulous) in the chest with steaming of the face, and “throw that bitch in the ocean”. (remember Bad Boys II? lol)
With love always ︎
