Rich Hincha loved movies. He was a film historian, a film professor, a film collector and, in his 32 years working for the Library of Congress, a preservation specialist in our film lab and a projectionist both at the Mary Pickford Theater at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and at the Packard Campus Theater at the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, VA. We lost Rich in a tragic accident earlier this summer. In his memory, each movie chosen for September is one of Rich’s favorites, part of his personal collection (acquired by the Library in 2022) or a title he programmed in the theater. Rich was a good friend and trusted colleague. We miss him and honor him with these selections.

Sergeant York* (1941) ● Friday, September 11, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. Alvin York (Gary Cooper), a hard-drinking Tennessee farmer, undergoes a spiritual epiphany and renounces violence. When he is sent to France, his remarkable marksmanship and actions during battle make him one of the war’s most decorated American soldiers. Directed by Howard Hawks. Black & white, 134 min. NR. Sleeping Beauty* (1959) ● Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. After Maleficent (Eleanor Audley) curses the infant Princess Aurora (Mary Costa) to die after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel, three good fairies hide her in a forest cottage. Although the curse is weakened to a deep sleep by the good fairies, it is fulfilled on Aurora’s sixteenth birthday, leaving Prince Phillip (Bill Shirley) to battle Maleficent and awaken the sleeping princess. They Were Expendable (1945) ● Thursday, September 17, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. After an attack on the Philippines in World War II, Lt. John Brickley (Robert Montgomery) and Lt. “Rusty” Ryan (John Wayne) command a squadron of PT boats initially dismissed as unimportant by Navy leaders. As American forces retreat, the crews attack enemy ships, carry messages and supplies and evacuate senior officers through increasingly dangerous waters. Directed by John Ford. Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970) ● Friday, September 18, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. In 1860s Mexico, traveling mercenary Hogan (Clint Eastwood) rescues Sister Sara (Shirley MacLaine) from a violent attack. Sara joins him on his journey, and the pair help Mexican revolutionaries attack a French military fort. The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom (1968) ● Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. Neglected by her work-obsessed husband, Harriet Blossom (Shirley MacLaine) gets romantic with sewing machine repairman Ambrose Tuttle (Richard Attenborough). Rather than leave, Ambrose secretly moves into the Blossoms’ attic where Harriet hides him for years while continuing her marriage downstairs, creating an increasingly complicated and unconventional household. From the Manger to the Cross* (1912) ● Friday, September 25, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. Beginning with the Nativity, this pioneering silent feature follows Jesus (Robert Henderson-Bland) through his childhood, ministry, miracles, betrayal, trial and crucifixion. Filmed on location in Egypt and Palestine, the production used biblical landscapes and historic sites to recreate episodes from the New Testament on an unusually ambitious scale for 1912. Silent, with accompaniment by Andrew Simpson. Black & white, 71 min. NR. (Film)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) ● Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Four human-sized turtles named after Renaissance artists and trained in martial arts emerge from the sewers when a group called the Foot Clan, led by the evil Shredder, begins recruiting teenagers into a growing criminal gang and kidnaps their rat mentor, Splinter. Along with reporter April O’Neil (Judith Hoag) and vigilante Casey Jones (Elias Koteas), the turtles set out to rescue Splinter. Directed by Steve Barron. Color, 93 min. PG. (Film)

Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. This year’s festival includes expanded programming which represents the vast array of collections at the Library including music and film.

The National Audio-Visual Conservation Center (NAVCC)— the Library’s division that preserves and cares for America’s cinematic and recorded sound heritage—is sponsoring this special conversation with filmmaker Martin Scorsese and Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz. Mr. Scorsese will discuss his filmmaking philosophy over a career that has spanned six decades and the importance of preserving our nation’s film heritage.

Martin Scorsese is no stranger to film preservation and the work of NAVCC to develop, preserve and provide broad access to our film history. He has long been a proponent of film preservation, advocating for the creation of the National Film Preservation Act of 1988, and consequently, the National Film Registry. He has, for many years, actively served on the National Film Preservation Board. Mr. Scorsese also established the Film Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history. Since its founding in 1990, the foundation has supported the restoration of more than 1,100 films through partnerships with archives and studios, made accessible to the public through festivals, museums and free educational resources.

In addition to supporting the preservation of film history, Mr. Scorsese has actively contributed to it: writing, directing, producing and acting in dozens of films since the start of his career in the 1960s. Five films that he directed—“Mean Streets” (1973), “Taxi Driver” (1976), “The Last Waltz” (1978), “Raging Bull” (1980) and “Goodfellas” (1990)—have been selected for the National Film Registry in recognition of their indelible impact on American culture. During Mr. Scorsese’s appearance at the National Book Festival, Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen will present registry certificates to Mr. Scorsese for these five films.

The film is faithful to the novel, striving to present fiction as fact and effectively conjuring its central theme that technology cannot be trusted, which Crichton would further explore two years later in “Westworld,” his first theatrical film as director. Nominations are due by August 15, 2026. Recommendations received after that date will be credited to the 2027 National Film Registry. You may nominate up to 50 films using the online nomination form.

Under the National Film Preservation Act of 1988, the Librarian of Congress, with advice from the National Film Preservation Board, selects 25 films each year that are deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” to America’s film heritage. Films must be at least 10 years old and extant, meaning they must exist.

To date, 925 films have been inducted into the National Film Registry, and public nominations remain an important part of the selection process. Your recommendations help inform the Librarian of Congress and the National Film Preservation Board as they make their final decisions.

As you prepare your nominations, we encourage you to consider the full breadth of American filmmaking from Hollywood classics and silent films to documentaries, educational, and industrial films, as well as works that reflect the rich diversity of American cultures and the contributions of filmmakers, producers, directors, writers, actors, cinematographers, composers, and other creative professionals.

Archetype of the modern melodrama, director Douglas Sirk’s “Written on the Wind” follows the operatic dynamics of a Texan oil family, the Hadleys. When the career-driven Lucy Moore (Lauren Bacall) sets aside her ambitions and marries the tragic heir to the oil empire, Kyle Hadley (Robert Stack), it creates a strain between him and his best friend, Mitch Wayne (Rock Hudson), an employee of the Hadleys who harbors a secret love for Lucy. Kyle’s sister, Marylee (Dorothy Malone), enviously attempts to woo Mitch while convincing Kyle that Lucy and Mitch must be having an affair.
