
We should all love seeing nighthawks catch and eat flying insects on the wing in summer skies above buildings, treetops, and grasslands. They are a champion among the birds that consume mosquitoes with their wide, bristle-lined mouths adapted to easily scoop prey from the air, and long, pointed wings and tails for precision aerial maneuvering.
Other birds known to dine on mosquitoes include purple martins, Eastern bluebirds, red-eyed vireos, yellow warblers, downy woodpeckers, house wrens, Baltimore orioles, and hummingbirds.

The claim to fame for dragonflies in the fight against mosquito infestations is preventing mosquitoes from ever launching into the air. Mosquitoes lay eggs in bodies of standing water, and dragonfly larvae happily eat the mosquito larvae before they grow into adults. Dragonflies on the wing also eat adult mosquitoes. Awesome.

The Eastern Red-Spotted Newt is found in forested areas, living near fresh water streams, ponds, marshes, lakes, or beaver ponds. Insects are a mainstay of their diet and these newts help control mosquito populations from Nova Scotia south to Georgia and as far west as western Tennessee by eating mosquito eggs and larvae.

Studies have shown that juvenile freshwater turtles eat mosquito larvae. In one Louisiana study, researchers placed young red-eared slider turtles in roadside ditches filled with mosquito larvae. At the end of the study, the mosquito larvae population was reduced by 99%. Case closed, thanks to turtles!

Bats’ sonar-like means of hunting down their prey makes mosquitoes easy targets for bats to catch—and their appetite for mosquitoes is undeniable. A University of Wisconsin study found evidence of mosquito consumption in over 70 percent of the guano samples from little brown bats, suggesting that bats in their natural habitat eat far more mosquitoes than previously thought.

This all-out assault on the Clean Water Act threatens to take us back to the days when rivers caught fire – risking our drinking water supply, water quality, and habitat for wildlife.

In order to ensure a strong state and tribal role in protecting local waters, the Clean Water Act gives states and tribes the authority to review federally licensed and permitted projects like dams, pipelines, and roads that will impact local water quality and certify that these projects comply with state water quality standards and state law. States can deny the certification – meaning the project cannot go forward without changes to protect waters.
States can also place protective conditions on projects to improve impacts to water quality, allow for fish passage, ensure adequate stream flow, preserve fish and recreational access, or other conditions to protect state waters. The law is clear that state conditions to protect waters must be a part of such permits or licenses and cannot be ignored.
For nearly 50 years, this critical tool has allowed states, tribes, and the federal government to cooperatively manage our nation’s water resources. It gives states and tribes a voice in federal project reviews and ensures developers take steps to prevent impacts on fisheries, water quality, and wildlife habitat. Often, this is the best and only way to helped improve projects that would damage water quality or fish and wildlife habitat across the nation, and has only occasionally stopped projects from moving forward.

The administration’s recently finalized rule would dramatically narrow the scope of issues states and tribes can review or include as conditions on a permit for dams or infrastructure projects, putting these protections at risk. It would also let the federal government ignore state and tribal voices by allowing federal agencies to override a state or tribal decision. Additionally, the rule limits the timeline that states and tribes have to complete review.
It also restricts the conditions that trigger this water quality protection process to only waters that the current administration considers to be a “water of the United States.” The Trump administration has dramatically reduced the scope of “waters of the United States,” meaning that the ability for states and tribes to protect non-federal waters would be greatly undercut, and could even result in not requiring a 401 certification for federally licensed activities that impact state or tribal waters that are not considered “waters of the United States.”
From salamanders to blue crabs, this new regulation threatens wildlife across the nation.

As proposed, the Constitution Pipeline would stretched nearly 100 miles through New York, cutting a 100-foot wide swath across hundreds of streams and creeks, including 85 trout streams, degrading wetlands and clearing out hundreds of acres of forest. New York State denied water quality certification for the pipeline, because the pipeline company failed to provide meaningful information demonstrating that the pipeline would comply with state water quality standards.
Salamanders are particularly vulnerable to poor water quality, because of their permeable skin, which allows them to breathe underwater. The Constitution Pipeline would have cut across areas where salamanders live, degrading water quality and habitat.
In 2017, Washington’s Department of Ecology denied a Clean Water Act certification for a proposed coal export facility in Longview, Washington, due to harmful impacts to the Columbia River’s water quality, fisheries, tribal resources, and wetland habitat.

The Columbia River Basin’s streams and rivers are critical to several types of trout and salmon, including Chinook, or king salmon, which swim thousands of miles from the ocean to freshwater spawning grounds in the Columbia River every year. Tiny salmon fry emerge from the gravel nests and begin their migration downstream to the estuary, where they adapt to the saltwater, before heading out into the open ocean. For generations, tribes have fished these salmon and steelhead runs, and also serve as a critical food source many wildlife species along the journey. Without Section 401, the construction of the proposed coal export terminal – which would have been the largest in North America – and subsequent pollution, would have harmed everyone that depends on strong salmon runs for a living.
For decades, the Conowingo Dam, which is a major hydroelectric dam in Maryland, trapped nutrient and sediment pollution on the Susquehanna River, preventing it from flowing downstream into Chesapeake Bay. However the reservoir behind the dam is now full and more pollution flows downstream than the Chesapeake Bay cleanup plan originally accounted for, harming water quality and habitat for fish and wildlife, including the Chesapeake Bay’s iconic blue crab.

As part of the process to get a new 50 year operating license for the dam, Exelon had to request a water quality certification from Maryland. In 2018, Maryland certified the renewal, but with the condition that Exelon must reduce sediment and nutrient pollution that flows from behind the dam into Chesapeake Bay. It also requires Exelon to improve conditions for aquatic life, including controlling freshwater flows from the dam into the delicate Chesapeake Bay estuary as well as improving fish migration to spawning areas upstream. Although Exelon has since challenged this certification, limiting Section 401 authority could significantly undermine Maryland’s ability to place protective conditions on projects like Conowingo Dam to protect downstream water quality.
History has shown us that waters and wildlife benefit from strong state, tribal, and federal cooperation to ensure the needs of local communities, fish and wildlife, recreation, and traditions are met.
Tell the Trump Administration that you oppose this slew of attacks against clean water and support the Clean Water for All Act to restore protections for wildlife habitat and drinking water – from the smallest headwaters at the top of the watershed, to the mightiest rivers and largest lakes downstream.

These habitats, called ephemeral bodies of water, are critical for many species, but small streams and wetlands are at risk and need our help.
Here are a few examples of wildlife that need these on-again, off-again waters!
In its 2008 Ephemeral Streams report , the U.S. EPA estimates that these types of waters make up about 59% of all streams in the United States (except Alaska). For more than a decade, Clean Water Act protections for these waters have been uncertain, putting them at increased risk of pollution and destruction.
But you have a chance to change that. A bill that would allow polluters free rein in these bodies of water is coming to a vote this week. You can do your part to protect these and hundreds more species by urging members of Congress to oppose this attack on the Clean Water Act.
Building a wildlife crossing is often an expensive, complex undertaking that requires expertise from wildlife biologists along with the coordination of a myriad of local, state and federal officials. Right now, in an initiative spearheaded by our California office and in partnership with wildlife experts and state transportation officials, we are working to create a wildlife overpass or tunnel across the 101 freeway in California that cuts through vital habitat for mountain lions and other wildlife. Summer is a fantastic time to find lizards, turtles and other cold-blooded species basking in the sun. This behavior is primarily a matter of thermoregulation, but may also be a means to acquire Vitamin D. Ants, snails and other insects are often found crawling along a log, while chipmunks and squirrels may use it as a place to rest. Plus mushrooms tend to grow here, whose mycelium helps the wood decay.
Hollow logs provide great cover for small mammals like foxes, rabbits, bobcats, skunks and raccoons. Bobcats are known to nap inside logs, while foxes may use it as a place to build their den. The inside of a log also provides protection from some predators. The picture below is of a red-tail hawk attempting to get a squirrel, who cleverly took refuge inside a log.
A nature walk rarely feels complete without flipping at least one log. The treasures beneath a log may include beetles, worms, spiders, salamanders, newts and centipedes. What you find on your flipping adventure will depend on the time of year, weather, moisture, and a number of other factors, but it’s all worth it. As you turn the log over, roll it back towards you, using it as a barrier and giving critters a chance to get away.
Snakes will often use the space next to a log to rest or look for food. Since logs are crawling with life (prey to a snake), it’s a good place to find a meal. They might also curl up against or inside a log to rest and stay hidden from predators. Egg-laying snake species like rat snakes may deposit their clutches in or under a logs to keep them protected.
Moss, fungi and lichen are a few special organisms that can be found growing on logs. The simple structure of mosses (a type of bryophyte) allow them to grow where other plants may not be able. Dead wood is a place where many species of lichen and fungi thrive as well.
Whether you explore logs along your next nature walk. or decide to keep some in your backyard, logs need some appreciation. They provide both cover and a place for wildlife to raise their young. It’s also a step toward qualifying your yard as an official Certified Wildlife Habitat.
Understandably, not everyone wants or has space for dead wood in their yard, but it is a great way to attract wildlife. You can visit a local nature site and investigate the wildlife that depend on logs in your area. Enter your zip code into Nature Find to get a list of parks and trails nearby.
Today, hellbenders are found in cold, clear streams in the eastern half of the United States. They spend most of their time hiding under large rocks, never (or very rarely) venturing out of the water. A hellbender will eat just about anything it can swallow, which may be why the species has survived for so long. Yet, in the last few decades, something has changed. Biologists used to find 30, 40, even 50 hellbenders in a single day. Today, you’d be lucky to find 10. In many places, the only hellbenders you’ll find are old adults, vestiges of a bygone era. No one knows exactly why the species is disappearing, but the main culprit is probably sediment pollution.

Dr. Kimberly Terrell is a wildlife biologist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) and a 2011 David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow. Her research focuses on amphibian health, and she is particularly interested in understanding how climate change will affect salamanders in the Appalachian region. Through studies at the National Zoo’s Appalachian Salamander Lab, Kim is investigating the effects of warmer temperatures on North America’s largest salamander, the hellbender. She is also working closely with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to help determine the conservation status of hellbenders in Virginia. As part of this work, Kim is developing a citizen science program to detect hellbenders by looking for traces of their DNA in stream water. Although she primarily studies amphibians, Kim has worked with a diverse group of species, including cheetahs, wood turtles, and freshwater mussels. But hellbenders are definitely her favorite animal.
In late March or early April, a warm rain will fall and spotted salamanders will emerge from underground in the evening to return to vernal pools to breed. This phenomenon is known as “Big Night,” and it’s a great teaching moment for kids.
But first, a word of caution. In writing a recent column about vernal pools, I learned that Big Night is a bit of an exaggeration. Spotted salamanders and other species that reproduce in vernal pools don’t all migrate on a single night, and weather conditions can make the migration quite different year to year. “It doesn’t really happen all at once, but the phrase ‘Big Night’ generates interest and it’s easy to say,” said vernal pool expert Jacob Kubel, a conservation scientist with the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. “I say it myself.”
With that in mind, here are some ways to help kids understand vernal pools and the animals that depend on them:

Before I explain this cold war between the cold blooded, I’ll let you in on a few interesting facts about rough-skinned newts AKA Taricha granulosa. All four of the Taricha spp. newts that we have in California have a relationship with a type of bacteria in their bodies that makes the newts extremely toxic. This often referred to “poison” is actually a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin (the same toxin that’s in puffer fish). Toxicity is not their only claim to coolness. These newts also have the ability to regenerate their limbs and some internal organs. Kate noted that in some special instances, rough skin newts have even re-grown parts of their own brain!
It gets even more interesting: the relationship between this amazing newt, and its only predator, has evolved into a race for existence. The garter snake has developed a unique adaptation to allow it to eat the highly toxic amphibian. Although not all Garter snakes can eat these newts, the ones that can, sequester the toxins from their prey in their liver, perhaps even making them toxic to their predators. These “toxic-immune” snakes are believed to be more brightly colored than the more toxic-susceptible members of their own species. Maybe this flamboyant coloration even warns the snake’s would-be predators that it, too, is toxic. Maybe that’s what we had discovered: a toxic-immune snake!
Since Kate’s class on the garter snake-newt arms race, every time I encounter either of these species, I wonder if any other of their wild neighbors is in on their arms race. Are there great blue herons out there becoming resistant to the newts’ tetrodotoxin from its diet of garter snakes? If so, will its feathers take on an even more spectacular hue of blue? Probably not, I mean, I can’t imagine those herons being any more beautiful.
And, yes, of course we set our snake free to live on amongst the habitat structures we built; where it can brighten the clear pools with its brilliance and dine on its favorite toxic meal.

Hello, my name is Jacob Gooding. I am a twenty-year-old corps member who does ecological restoration with the California Conservation Corps in Ukiah, California. It was a solid three weeks into our salmon habitat restoration season when my supervisor John Griffith informed me that Pacific giant salamanders thrived in the creeks we work in. I’d never seen them, so I started my quest to discover one immediately. Who doesn’t like hunting for a slimy creature that hides under rocks and/or in a creek?
I was armed with a field guide that gave me clues on where to look and facts that made me want to find one even more. I was especially intrigued when I read how unique Pacific Giant Salamanders are—even among California’s other interesting amphibians. These salamanders can be neotenic: giving them the ability to forego metamorphosis and remain in the larval stage with all reproductive perks of adulthood. And they are the largest terrestrial salamanders in the world!
When I finally found one, I was deep in Northern California’s Jackson State Demonstration Forest with two of my fellow corps members: shirtless with snorkles and masks, eagerly standing before the frigid creek, motivated to finally find the elusive amphibian. In every promising pool, we were met by dozens of new and exciting friends: rough-skinned newts, steelhead trout, caddis fly larvae, and red-legged frogs. But not one salamander!
It was getting too dark and cold to continue, but I insisted on one last dive of the day. I took a deep breath and plunged into the bitterly cold but promising pool. Peering out from under a log was a majestic “giant.” It was splattered with blued marble finish. All at once the other creatures in the water seemed to have vanished. Nothing else mattered. This particular salamander was super calm and practically wiggled right into my hand. So without hesitation, I grabbed him and yelled out to my co-workers, “I caught one!” They ran over to share in the excitement.

This Pacific Giant happened to be neotenic! I could tell due to the fact that he still had his larval gills, but was the size of the adults: about 9 inches long (though they can be up to twelve inches). I never knew amphibians could get that size! His round goldish-brown eyes popped with contrast to his mottled skin. It was a moment I wanted to savor forever. I knew that this salamander played a large ecological role in this system, so I released him back into his slippery empire. At that instant, I realized that this is how the relationship between humans and nature should really be. In touch.
