Mosquitoes are unwanted visitors to our backyards, but nature can offer solutions that don’t involve chemicals or bug sprays. Often overlooked and under-appreciated, the following wildlife species are especially helpful for us all because they are excellent at consuming mosquitoes! 

Check out this squad of mosquito-eaters and how they get the job done: 

Common Nighthawk

We should all love seeing nighthawks catch and eat flying insects on the wing in summer skies above buildings, treetops, and grasslands. They are a champion among the birds that consume mosquitoes with their wide, bristle-lined mouths adapted to easily scoop prey from the air, and long, pointed wings and tails for precision aerial maneuvering. 

Other birds known to dine on mosquitoes include purple martins, Eastern bluebirds, red-eyed vireos, yellow warblers, downy woodpeckers, house wrens, Baltimore orioles, and hummingbirds.

Dragonflies

The claim to fame for dragonflies in the fight against mosquito infestations is preventing mosquitoes from ever launching into the air. Mosquitoes lay eggs in bodies of standing water, and dragonfly larvae happily eat the mosquito larvae before they grow into adults. Dragonflies on the wing also eat adult mosquitoes. Awesome.

Red-Spotted Newt

The Eastern Red-Spotted Newt is found in forested areas, living near fresh water streams, ponds, marshes, lakes, or beaver ponds. Insects are a mainstay of their diet and these newts help control mosquito populations from Nova Scotia south to Georgia and as far west as western Tennessee by eating mosquito eggs and larvae.  

Aquatic Turtles

Studies have shown that juvenile freshwater turtles eat mosquito larvae. In one Louisiana study, researchers placed young red-eared slider turtles in roadside ditches filled with mosquito larvae. At the end of the study, the mosquito larvae population was reduced by 99%. Case closed, thanks to turtles!

Bats

Bats’ sonar-like means of hunting down their prey makes mosquitoes easy targets for bats to catch—and their appetite for mosquitoes is undeniable. A University of Wisconsin study found evidence of mosquito consumption in over 70 percent of the guano samples from little brown bats, suggesting that bats in their natural habitat eat far more mosquitoes than previously thought.

The Trump Administration has spent nearly four years trying to dismantle the Clean Water Act. In the middle of a global pandemic – where access to clean water is more important than ever – the administration finalized a rule that dramatically reduces the streams, wetlands, and other waters protected from pollution and destruction under the Clean Water Act. At the same time, they’re also trying to restrict the right for states and tribes to protect waters within their boundaries.

This all-out assault on the Clean Water Act threatens to take us back to the days when rivers caught fire – risking our drinking water supply, water quality, and habitat for wildlife.

In order to ensure a strong state and tribal role in protecting local waters, the Clean Water Act gives states and tribes the authority to review federally licensed and permitted projects like dams, pipelines, and roads that will impact local water quality and certify that these projects comply with state water quality standards and state law. States can deny the certification – meaning the project cannot go forward without changes to protect waters.

States can also place protective conditions on projects to improve impacts to water quality, allow for fish passage, ensure adequate stream flow, preserve fish and recreational access, or other conditions to protect state waters. The law is clear that state conditions to protect waters must be a part of such permits or licenses and cannot be ignored.

For nearly 50 years, this critical tool has allowed states, tribes, and the federal government to cooperatively manage our nation’s water resources. It gives states and tribes a voice in federal project reviews and ensures developers take steps to prevent impacts on fisheries, water quality, and wildlife habitat. Often, this is the best and only way to helped improve projects that would damage water quality or fish and wildlife habitat across the nation, and has only occasionally stopped projects from moving forward.

New Rule Undermines Longstanding State and Tribal Authority to Protect Clean Water

The administration’s recently finalized rule would dramatically narrow the scope of issues states and tribes can review or include as conditions on a permit for dams or infrastructure projects, putting these protections at risk. It would also let the federal government ignore state and tribal voices by allowing federal agencies to override a state or tribal decision. Additionally, the rule limits the timeline that states and tribes have to complete review.

It also restricts the conditions that trigger this water quality protection process to only waters that the current administration considers to be a “water of the United States.” The Trump administration has dramatically reduced the scope of “waters of the United States,” meaning that the ability for states and tribes to protect non-federal waters would be greatly undercut, and could even result in not requiring a 401 certification for federally licensed activities that impact state or tribal waters that are not considered “waters of the United States.”

From salamanders to blue crabs, this new regulation threatens wildlife across the nation.

As proposed, the Constitution Pipeline would stretched nearly 100 miles through New York, cutting a 100-foot wide swath across hundreds of streams and creeks, including 85 trout streams, degrading wetlands and clearing out hundreds of acres of forest. New York State denied water quality certification for the pipeline, because the pipeline company failed to provide meaningful information demonstrating that the pipeline would comply with state water quality standards.

Salamanders are particularly vulnerable to poor water quality, because of their permeable skin, which allows them to breathe underwater. The Constitution Pipeline would have cut across areas where salamanders live, degrading water quality and habitat.

Salmon Runs

In 2017, Washington’s Department of Ecology denied a Clean Water Act certification for a proposed coal export facility in Longview, Washington, due to harmful impacts to the Columbia River’s water quality, fisheries, tribal resources, and wetland habitat.

The Columbia River Basin’s streams and rivers are critical to several types of trout and salmon, including Chinook, or king salmon, which swim thousands of miles from the ocean to freshwater spawning grounds in the Columbia River every year. Tiny salmon fry emerge from the gravel nests and begin their migration downstream to the estuary, where they adapt to the saltwater, before heading out into the open ocean. For generations, tribes have fished these salmon and steelhead runs, and also serve as a critical food source many wildlife species along the journey. Without Section 401, the construction of the proposed coal export terminal – which would have been the largest in North America – and subsequent pollution, would have harmed everyone that depends on strong salmon runs for a living.

Chesapeake Blue Crabs

For decades, the Conowingo Dam, which is a major hydroelectric dam in Maryland, trapped nutrient and sediment pollution on the Susquehanna River, preventing it from flowing downstream into Chesapeake Bay. However the reservoir behind the dam is now full and more pollution flows downstream than the Chesapeake Bay cleanup plan originally accounted for, harming water quality and habitat for fish and wildlife, including the Chesapeake Bay’s iconic blue crab.

As part of the process to get a new 50 year operating license for the dam, Exelon had to request a water quality certification from Maryland. In 2018, Maryland certified the renewal, but with the condition that Exelon must reduce sediment and nutrient pollution that flows from behind the dam into Chesapeake Bay. It also requires Exelon to improve conditions for aquatic life, including controlling freshwater flows from the dam into the delicate Chesapeake Bay estuary as well as improving fish migration to spawning areas upstream. Although Exelon has since challenged this certification, limiting Section 401 authority could significantly undermine Maryland’s ability to place protective conditions on projects like Conowingo Dam to protect downstream water quality.

Take Action

History has shown us that waters and wildlife benefit from strong state, tribal, and federal cooperation to ensure the needs of local communities, fish and wildlife, recreation, and traditions are met.

Tell the Trump Administration that you oppose this slew of attacks against clean water and support the Clean Water for All Act to restore protections for wildlife habitat and drinking water – from the smallest headwaters at the top of the watershed, to the mightiest rivers and largest lakes downstream.

We have 3.9 million miles of public roads crisscrossing the country, with many running right through prime wildlife habitat. Sadly, millions of birds, reptiles, mammals and amphibians are killed by vehicles.

Thankfully, in some places, wildlife experts are helping all sorts of species cross the road in safe – and very clever – ways.

Bear Tunnel: A Family Affair

This grizzly bear mom travels safely UNDER the road with her cubs following closely behind. Over the years, this tunnel will become a tradition. The cubs come back to use the very same crossing as adults!

On Australia’s Christmas Island, tens of millions of crabs make a spectacular pilgrimage from forest to ocean. Unfortunately, 500,000 of them die, many from being crushed by vehicles while crossing roads. Built on main migration paths, these tunnels funnel migrating crabs to safe crossings UNDER roadways.

Desert Tortoise Culvert: Reptiles Under Roads

In the Mohave Desert, tortoises and traffic do not mix, so wildlife experts and transportation officials teamed up to transform culverts (a tunnel carrying a stream or drain under a road) into wildlife passageways. The culverts are now flush to the ground for easy entry and exit. One tortoise took seven hours to get through the underpass!

Wolf Overpass: Lush Path to Safety

In 1996, Alberta’s Banff National Park built the very first wildlife crossing in the world over busy TransCanada Highway, the world’s longest national road. The surrounding forest has filled in the overpass. It’s so lush that wildlife like wolves would have no idea they are crossing a major highway. Best part? Accidents and animal deaths are down 80 percent!

Salamander Xing: Taking the Low Road to the Pond

For a few days each spring, on damp and rainy evenings, spotted salamanders migrate from forests to vernal pools to mate and lay eggs. Accidents happen as they try to cross roads on their yearly journey. In Amherst, Mass., the local department of public works teamed with conservation groups, the University of Massachusetts and others to create two underpasses for salamanders, complete with fences to guide the amphibians into the tunnel and openings at the top to provide dampness.

Animals’ Bridge:  Elk Are All Over It

Sometimes the scenery on our road trips is so beautiful, we forget we’re driving right through wildlife habitat. On the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana, the “road is a visitor.” The Animals’ Bridge on US93 respects the natural path of wildlife, and has substantially reduced accidents and roadkills.

Marshes, wetlands, intermittent streams, and even some lakes fill from rainwater or snowmelt then empty through evaporation—coming and going throughout the year. These small but mighty habitats filter out pollution, ease the effects of flooding, and provide water for wildlife in dry climates.

These habitats, called ephemeral bodies of water, are critical for many species, but small streams and wetlands are at risk and need our help.

Here are a few examples of wildlife that need these on-again, off-again waters!

River Otters

River otters are playful semi-aquatic mammals who spend a lot of time in the water – they can even hold their breath for up to 8 minutes! They make their homes near many types of water, including marshes and wetlands. However, they are extremely sensitive to water pollution, which in tandem with unregulated trapping and hunting, had diminished their numbers in the past. Their numbers are coming back strong, but clean water is key to their survival.

Pronghorn

Pronghorn are the fastest land animal in North America, and can reach a peak speed of 60 miles an hour. So while they won’t beat a cheetah in the sprint, they can maintain their speed for much longer. In Wyoming, around 400 pronghorn migrate from the Grand Teton National Park to the Upper Green Basin for the winter. During the 150 mile journey, they rely on bodies of water like terminal basins, which are closed, standing bodies of water. These are important for both the water they provide and the food from the ecosystem of terminal basins.

Bighorn Sheep

Bighorn sheep are known for- you guessed it- their big horns! The male horns can weigh up to 30 pounds, and some can grow to over 3 feet long. In California, federally-listed bighorn sheep rely on pools of standing water called tenajas as a key source of water in an otherwise arid and hot climate. Desert bighorn sheep tend to live within 2-3 miles of water, so the disappearance of any of these tenajas would threaten the species’ survival.

Salamanders

A few species of salamanders have adapted to the changing life of living in a vernal pool, a temporary pool that usually fills in the spring and evaporates depending upon the weather, but often contains water well into the summer. While adult salamanders live on dry land, during the spring they will go to a vernal pool to lay their eggs, which will develop and hatch during the summer. If the pool lasts long enough, the young salamanders will grow and emerge to become terrestrial animals. One cool thing about these salamander eggs is that they contain green algae, so that when the embryonic salamander produces carbon dioxide it turns it into oxygen that the embryo can use.

American Avocets

American avocets are migratory birds that use ephemeral waters as their pit stops along their migratory path. Prairie pothole wetlands are often frequented by avocets. These “potholes” provide a shallow habitat for avocets to search for food, as well as to nest in the spring. Their chicks are quick learners – within 24 hours after hatching, they can already walk, swim, and dive to avoid predators!

In its 2008 Ephemeral Streams report , the U.S. EPA estimates that these types of waters make up about 59% of all streams in the United States (except Alaska). For more than a decade, Clean Water Act protections for these waters have been uncertain, putting them at increased risk of pollution and destruction.

But you have a chance to change that. A bill that would allow polluters free rein in these bodies of water is coming to a vote this week. You can do your part to protect these and hundreds more species by urging members of Congress to oppose this attack on the Clean Water Act.

More and more, mountain lions are tragically being injured or killed on the heavily-trafficked roads outside Los Angeles that cut through their mountain habitat. And as sprawling development consumes significant portions of the remaining green spaces in our country’s largest metropolitan areas, wildlife habitat is becoming increasingly fragmented by roads. But fortunately, there are ways to help animals safely avoid traffic through the creation of wildlife overpasses or tunnels.  Here are a few of our favorites that are providing safe crossings for wildlife!

Mountain Lion Underpass

Banff National Park, which spans more than 2,000 square miles in Canada,  has the most wildlife crossing structures located in any single place in the world – six overpasses and 38 underpasses help wildlife safely cross the four lane Trans-Canada Highway that runs through the park’s vast habitat areas. While wildlife use both the underpasses and overpasses, park experts have found that different species have definite preferences. Grizzly bears, wolves, elk, moose and deer prefer high, wide and short crossing structures, while black bears and cougars tend to choose underpasses that are long, low and narrow. Smaller animals such as snowshoe hare, porcupines and voles like to use the drainage culverts when there’s lots of traffic.

Threatened desert tortoises were at risk of being run over by traffic as they tried to cross a highway that cuts through their habitat in the Mohave Desert. So wildlife experts and transportation officials teamed up to transform culverts running under the highway to serve as wildlife passageways.  The culvert underpasses are now flush with the ground, and edged with small, soil-covered boulders to make it easy for the tortoises to enter and exit. The desert tortoise are using them, but at a leisurely pace – it took one tortoise seven hours of stopping and starting to get through one of the culvert underpasses!

 Red Crab Crossings

Scientists estimate there are tens of millions of red crabs living on Australia’s Christmas Island. And every year as the crabs make their spectacular pilgrimage from the forest towards the ocean to breed, up to 500,000 die – many from being crushed by vehicles while crossing roads. To reduce the number of crabs killed by vehicles during the migration, ‘crab crossings’ are being created where roads cross main crab migration paths. Tunnels have been built under the road for the crabs and walls alongside the road help ‘funnel’ the migrating crabs through the underground crossings.

 Safe Passage for Elephants

Africa’s first dedicated elephant highway underpass in Kenya links wilderness areas on Mount Kenya’s highlands and the lower forests and plains. Many experts were skeptical at first – doubting that the elephants would be comfortable with passing beneath a freeway. However, the safe crossing for elephants is a tremendous success with hundreds of elephants travelling up and down every year. China and India have elephant underpasses too, and India even has elephant overpasses.

Wildlife enthusiasts in Amherst, Massachusetts volunteered for years to come out on a (usually) rainy evening, stop traffic and safely carry migrating salamanders across a busy road.  They were trying to reduce the number of salamanders killed by traffic as they crossed the road on their migration from the forest to vernal pools for mating and to lay eggs. The local department of public works worked with conservation groups, the University of Massachusetts and others to create two underpasses for the salamanders to use during spring migration.  The two tunnels were built at the salamanders crossing site, complete with fences to guide them into the tunnels and with openings at the top to provide the requisite dampness for the salamander’s travels.

I recently learned that dead trees provide vital habitat for more than 1,000 species of wildlife nationwide. The two most common types of dead wood you’ll find in your yard, along a trail or at a park are snags (upright) and logs (on the ground). Despite their name, dead trees are crawling with life. From the basking lizards on top to the beetles underneath, the list of wildlife that depend on logs feels endless. Here’s a sampling of what you may find if you explore a log more closely. What have you observed on, under or near a dead tree?

Atop

Summer is a fantastic time to find lizards, turtles and other cold-blooded species basking in the sun. This behavior is primarily a matter of thermoregulation, but may also be a means to acquire Vitamin D. Ants, snails and other insects are often found crawling along a log, while chipmunks and squirrels may use it as a place to rest. Plus mushrooms tend to grow here, whose mycelium helps the wood decay.

Inside

Hollow logs provide great cover for small mammals like foxes, rabbits, bobcats, skunks and raccoons. Bobcats are known to nap inside logs, while foxes may use it as a place to build their den. The inside of a log also provides protection from some predators. The picture below is of a red-tail hawk attempting to get a squirrel, who cleverly took refuge inside a log.

Logs also provide bountiful food and shelter for many small critters that live right in the wood. These include many beetles and bees like carpenter bees, which dig tunnels in the logs. Colonies of termites and carpenter ants depend on dead trees and logs, chewing through the wood to build their chambers.   Under the bark are…no surprise…bark beetles, which leave behind galleries or tracks of their paths on the wood surface directly under the bark. Slime molds, often brightly colored, use the nutrients of decaying logs.

A nature walk rarely feels complete without flipping at least one log. The treasures beneath a log may include beetles, worms, spiders, salamanders, newts and centipedes. What you find on your flipping adventure will depend on the time of year, weather, moisture, and a number of other factors, but it’s all worth it. As you turn the log over, roll it back towards you, using it as a barrier and giving critters a chance to get away.

Beside

Snakes will often use the space next to a log to rest or look for food. Since logs are crawling with life (prey to a snake), it’s a good place to find a meal. They might also curl up against or inside a log to rest and stay hidden from predators. Egg-laying snake species like rat snakes may deposit their clutches in or under a logs to keep them protected.

Attached To

Moss, fungi and lichen are a few special organisms that can be found growing on logs. The simple structure of mosses (a type of bryophyte) allow them to grow where other plants may not be able. Dead wood is a place where many species of lichen and fungi thrive as well.

Appreciate Logs

Whether you explore logs along your next nature walk. or decide to keep some in your backyard, logs need some appreciation. They provide both cover and a place for wildlife to raise their young. It’s also a step toward qualifying your yard as an official Certified Wildlife Habitat.

Understandably, not everyone wants or has space for dead wood in their yard, but it is a great way to attract wildlife. You can visit a local nature site and investigate the wildlife that depend on logs in your area. Enter your zip code into Nature Find to get a list of parks and trails nearby.

The hellbender is an animal of contradictions. It has lungs, but is not an air breather. Young hellbenders are fish food, but adults swallow fish whole. Sometimes hellbenders eat other hellbenders. During the breeding season, a single male vigilantly guards the nest … even though he can’t claim full paternity. And perhaps most bizarre is the hellbender’s family tree. Although there are nearly 200 salamander species in North America, the hellbender’s closest relatives live in Japan and China.

With a flat, 2-foot-long body and brown, wrinkled skin, the hellbender is the largest and most unique-looking salamander in North America. It is part of an ancient family called Cryptobranchidae that includes the 5-foot-long Japanese and Chinese giant salamanders. The family name means “hidden gill” because, as young salamanders grow, their external gills shrink and eventually disappear, leaving a small hole behind. Cryptobranchid salamanders have crawled along stream bottoms since the time of the dinosaurs and haven’t changed much in the last 160 million years. As the only cryptobranchid in the western hemisphere, hellbenders are the black sheep of the family. Their ancestors left Asia and (over many generations) crossed a land bridge that connected Europe and North America. This is a remarkable distance, especially considering the hellbender’s small home range – most adults stay within a 200-ft stretch of river. If other cryptobranchid salamanders braved the long journey out of Asia, they did not survive to tell the tale.

Today, hellbenders are found in cold, clear streams in the eastern half of the United States. They spend most of their time hiding under large rocks, never (or very rarely) venturing out of the water. A hellbender will eat just about anything it can swallow, which may be why the species has survived for so long. Yet, in the last few decades, something has changed. Biologists used to find 30, 40, even 50 hellbenders in a single day. Today, you’d be lucky to find 10. In many places, the only hellbenders you’ll find are old adults, vestiges of a bygone era. No one knows exactly why the species is disappearing, but the main culprit is probably sediment pollution.

When most people think of pollution, they think of harmful chemicals. But for aquatic animals, dirt (also called sediment) can be just as toxic. When land is cleared for development, dirt enters nearby streams as runoff. This dirt can suffocate hellbenders and other water-breathing animals, kind of like a person trying to breathe in a dust cloud. The good news is that we can do something about it. Planting trees and vegetation along stream edges can create “buffers” that help keep the water clean. Don’t own any streamside property? No problem, you can still help protect the species. It’s important to let folks know that hellbenders are not poisonous, and it’s illegal to kill them or to keep them as pets. And although rock piles or “hand dams” can provide hours of entertainment on the river, hellbenders will abandon an area if the rocks have been disturbed. At the end of the day, we have a lot in common with these ancient, slimy creatures. Give them clean water, fresh fish, and shelter, and they’ll be happy for another 160 million years.

In late March or early April, a warm rain will fall and spotted salamanders will emerge from underground in the evening to return to vernal pools to breed. This phenomenon is known as “Big Night,” and it’s a great teaching moment for kids.

Here are some suggestions for how to introduce children to Big Night.

But first, a word of caution. In writing a recent column about vernal pools, I learned that Big Night is a bit of an exaggeration. Spotted salamanders and other species that reproduce in vernal pools don’t all migrate on a single night, and weather conditions can make the migration quite different year to year. “It doesn’t really happen all at once, but the phrase ‘Big Night’ generates interest and it’s easy to say,” said vernal pool expert Jacob Kubel, a conservation scientist with the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. “I say it myself.”

With that in mind, here are some ways to help kids understand vernal pools and the animals that depend on them:

  1. Read Big Night for Salamanders, by Sarah Marwil Lamstein. This wonderful picture book, illustrated by Carol Benioff, was a Smithsonian Notable Book for Children 2010. It describes how a boy and his parents help salamanders cross a busy road on a rainy night, so they can mate and lay eggs in a vernal pool. While educational, the book is also a good story that is engaging for children. My daughter (age 4) immediately wanted to go out and help too. The author’s website has a downloadable classroom guide.
  2. Connect with experts and enthusiasts. Join an organized vernal pool activity, such as a family workshop or walk, through nonprofit groups like Mass Audubon, which maintains anonline calendar of events. Get a field guide to the animals of vernal pools and learn much more through the Vernal Pool Association, an educational group based in Massachusetts that encourages the appreciation, protection, and interdisciplinary study of vernal pools, particularly by students. The association maintains a website, blog, Facebook page, and listserv.
  3. Visit a known vernal pool. Some vernal pools are certified and marked. In the Minute Man National Historical Park, which spans the towns of Lexington, Lincoln, and Concord, Mass., the Vernal Pool Trail is a short spur trail near the parking lot by Hartwell’s Tavern. In Amherst, Mass., two tunnels were built under Henry Street in the late 1980s so that frogs, toads, and salamanders can reach a nearby vernal pool safely.   4. Look for signs of vernal pools on your hikes. This is a great game for a young detective. If it is spring, listen for an odd quacking sound in the woods—it’s the courtship call of male wood frogs. Wood frogs are one of the species, like spotted salamanders, that gather in vernal pools to reproduce. Kubel also recommends looking for depressions in the earth that might hold water and noticing any concentration of shrubs such as winterberry in the forest understory, which may indicate the presence of a wetland.
  5. Go out with a flashlight on Big Night. Once you know where vernal pools are in your region, you can head out on the first rainy night in late winter or early spring when the temperature rises to 40 degrees or so. Spotted salamanders should be starting their trek, and you and the kids may be lucky enough to spot them—or even help them across the road. Remind the kids to get their hands damp before picking up spotted salamanders, to help the salamanders’ skin remain moist.

A note from NWF’s California Director Beth Pratt: California Conservation Corp crew members and their leader John Griffith have embraced NWF’s Certified Wildlife Habitat program and certified their Ukiah campus, with plans of doing more sites across California. I recently visited with the crew and became so impressed with their dedication to helping wildlife that I offered a guest spot on the Wildlife Promise blog if they would write about their experiences. The first story, about the quest for the Pacific giant salamander, will have you wanting to encounter one of these slimy but cool creatures. This second story in the series, written by Nick Aquirre, tells the fascinating story of a continuing battle between predator and prey.

After building salmon habitat restoration log structures on the Noyo River in Northern California, my fellow California Conservation Corps (CCC) crew members Allen and Jacob joined me on an adventure to explore upstream. Our mission was simple: discover something wild. While working our way up the river canyon, we passed by a few of last year’s CCC built salmon habitat structures. In a clear pool scoured by one such structure, a garter snake posed as if ready to strike the first fish that dared to swim passed. It immediately sensed our presence, but instead of swimming away, it slithered right toward us.

Jacob shouted, “Catch it! Let’s get a better look!”

Allen gently caught the snake, saying, “This one is really brightly colored.” It was. It’s vividly orange and red sides and the yellow line along its back made it appear as if it were a slithering treasure made of tiny gems and gold. Earlier that day John Griffith, our supervisor—and hardcore nature lover/teacher—had found two other garter snakes that were in the path of our habitat construction and moved them to a safer location. Neither had been as fantastically colored as this one. At first I assumed that those snakes had been a different species than the one Allen now held, but then I remembered a class I’d attended at the Solar Living Institute on the wildlife of oak woodlands taught by one of Northern California’s premier naturalists, Kate Marianchild. She’d taught us about an evolutionary arms race between the California rough-skinned newt and the garter snake. Yes, an arms race!

Before I explain this cold war between the cold blooded, I’ll let you in on a few interesting facts about rough-skinned newts AKA Taricha granulosa. All four of the Taricha spp. newts that we have in California have a relationship with a type of bacteria in their bodies that makes the newts extremely toxic. This often referred to “poison” is actually a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin (the same toxin that’s in puffer fish). Toxicity is not their only claim to coolness. These newts also have the ability to regenerate their limbs and some internal organs. Kate noted that in some special instances, rough skin newts have even re-grown parts of their own brain!

It gets even more interesting: the relationship between this amazing newt, and its only predator, has evolved into a race for existence. The garter snake has developed a unique adaptation to allow it to eat the highly toxic amphibian. Although not all Garter snakes can eat these newts, the ones that can, sequester the toxins from their prey in their liver, perhaps even making them toxic to their predators. These “toxic-immune” snakes are believed to be more brightly colored than the more toxic-susceptible members of their own species. Maybe this flamboyant coloration even warns the snake’s would-be predators that it, too, is toxic. Maybe that’s what we had discovered: a toxic-immune snake!

Since Kate’s class on the garter snake-newt arms race, every time I encounter either of these species, I wonder if any other of their wild neighbors is in on their arms race. Are there great blue herons out there becoming resistant to the newts’ tetrodotoxin from its diet of garter snakes? If so, will its feathers take on an even more spectacular hue of blue? Probably not, I mean, I can’t imagine those herons being any more beautiful.

A note from Beth:  California Conservation Corp crew members and their leader John Griffith have embraced NWF’s Certified Wildlife Habitat program and certified their Ukiah campus, with plans of doing more sites across California. I recently visited with the crew and became so impressed with their dedication to helping wildlife that I offered them my Wildlife Promise blog space if they would write about their experiences. This first story, about the quest for the Pacific Giant Salamander, will have you wanting to encounter one of these slimey but cool creatures.

2013-09-15_16-32-55_671Hello, my name is Jacob Gooding. I am a twenty-year-old corps member who does ecological restoration with the California Conservation Corps in Ukiah, California. It was a solid three weeks into our salmon habitat restoration season when my supervisor John Griffith informed me that Pacific giant salamanders thrived in the creeks we work in. I’d never seen them, so I started my quest to discover one immediately. Who doesn’t like hunting for a slimy creature that hides under rocks and/or in a creek?

I was armed with a field guide that gave me clues on where to look and facts that made me want to find one even more. I was especially intrigued when I read how unique Pacific Giant Salamanders are—even among California’s other interesting amphibians. These salamanders can be neotenic: giving them the ability to forego metamorphosis and remain in the larval stage with all reproductive perks of adulthood. And they are the largest terrestrial salamanders in the world!

When I finally found one, I was deep in Northern California’s Jackson State Demonstration Forest with two of my fellow corps members: shirtless with snorkles and masks, eagerly standing before the frigid creek, motivated to finally find the elusive amphibian. In every promising pool, we were met by dozens of new and exciting friends: rough-skinned newts, steelhead trout, caddis fly larvae, and red-legged frogs. But not one salamander!

It was getting too dark and cold to continue, but I insisted on one last dive of the day. I took a deep breath and plunged into the bitterly cold but promising pool. Peering out from under a log was a majestic “giant.” It was splattered with blued marble finish. All at once the other creatures in the water seemed to have vanished. Nothing else mattered. This particular salamander was super calm and practically wiggled right into my hand. So without hesitation, I grabbed him and yelled out to my co-workers, “I caught one!” They ran over to share in the excitement.

This Pacific Giant happened to be neotenic! I could tell due to the fact that he still had his larval gills, but was the size of the adults: about 9 inches long (though they can be up to twelve inches). I never knew amphibians could get that size!  His round goldish-brown eyes popped with contrast to his mottled skin. It was a moment I wanted to savor forever. I knew that this salamander played a large ecological role in this system, so I released him back into his slippery empire. At that instant, I realized that this is how the relationship between humans and nature should really be. In touch.
