Abstract: This special issue addresses the epistemological, institutional, and political challenges of integrating critical games scholarship with game development practices and pedagogy. The featured essays help form a foundation for Critical Game Design and draw from intellectual traditions and debates not only from both game studies and game design, but from the classical design disciplines as well. We aim to build more connective tissue and collaboration between game design and the broader design disciplines, allowing space for research, scholarship, and creative work that drives the underlying epistemological core of the many spaces in which all designers find themselves educated and employed.

The Transition Year is a map-drawing game. This is also a story-telling game and a world-building game. You collectively explore the struggles of a community trying to transition from a life dependent on extraction and domination and build a new way of living. It is a game about community, difficult choices, solarpunk dreams and anti-capitalist futures. When you play, you make decisions about the community. Those decisions get recorded on a map that is constantly evolving and on the provided Community Record Sheets. Parts of the map are literal cartography, while others are symbolic. You will name and describe the various groups that make up the larger community, narrate the projects they embark on, the challenges they face, and roleplay them in community gatherings.

Will you be able to work together, thrive, and make substantive changes through The Transition Year? What will this community look like after a year of working toward transition? This game encourages you to consider these questions, and to play to find out what happens. Players collaborate to create and steer this community, but they will also introduce conflict and tension along the way.

The Flora is a meditative structured freeform game for 1-6 players, inspired by The Skeletons by Jason Morningstar, Artefact by Jack Harrison and A Feeling for the Organism by Evelyn Fox Keller.

In it you will play a long-lived plant, rooted in place, their history and responses to the elements, fauna, their
human caretakers and the human-shaped world. The game starts with fledgling Flora growing in our present day, you will feel the marks of human activity, the shifting seasons, and the changing climate as you adapt and grow, and eventually decay and die.

You’ll be answering questions, choosing options from tables, telling or writing stories about the Flora and the different caretakers in the Flora’s life, drawing and updating a map of the Lot on which they live, and drawing the Flora throughout their lifespan.

We hope you will develop a feeling for the Flora as you play.

Abstract: Dr. O’Donnell’s chapter is rooted in a deep interest and care for Game Production Studies, beginning with his early dissertation work with AAA game developers and subsequently working in a variety of fields doing research on Game Production in the educational, crowdsourcing, and “indie” communities. O’Donnell’s focus will be on the theories, methods, and practices of performing indie Game Production Studies. Game Production Studies explore the wide array of processes, practices, texts, technologies, and aspects that take place in and surrounding the game production process. This process is often referred to generally as “game development”, which while rooted in the practice of making games actually constitutes a wide variety of tasks, disciplinary perspectives, processes, people, and institutions. This entry explores a variety of the theoretical and methodological foundations of Studio Studies. It examines the increasingly complex practice of research working in the space of Studio Studies and concludes by examining the myriad of issues that can complicate work of this kind and potential pitfalls that the field faces as it moves forward in the studying of game developers making games.

Abstract: This chapter explores the background, ethics, and design of “Dating Games.” It explores how Dating Games differ from other forms of serious games and how designers can both get dating and Dating Games wrong if poorly designed. The chapter does this through the lens of the author’s non-digital Dating Game, Fellowship of Fools: The (Romance) Game and Fellowship of Fools: The (Sexuality) Game. The chapter also examines the role that friendship plays in romantic and sexual relationships and thus also uses the author’s game, Fellowship of Fools: The (Friendship) Game. Dating Games, not unlike dating generally, are a “fraught” field. Players bring with them a great deal of cultural assumptions that require a great deal of thought and care on the part of designers.

Abstract: This essay explores the ephemeral character of platforms and the critical role that theoretical frameworks play in making sense of platforms as socio-technical assemblages. Through an exploration aimed at further complicating the Nintendo Wii as platform and exploring Twitter as platform, the essay considers the crucial role of theory in the unpacking of black boxes. In an attempt to render platforms accessible, it is quite possible they have been presented as more opaque, and their analysts have not adequately debugged the messes they have encountered.

Review essays can serve as an interesting moment to reflect on a given field [1]. In this case, I take each of these texts to fall within the broad heterogeneous field of Game Studies. That said, each text also falls into a variety of separate, yet connected fields/disciplines and demonstrates the wide range of diverse approaches to what can be called Game Studies. In some respects this makes this a particularly difficult review essay to write because outside of the fact that each is dealing with scholarly work around games, there is not a great deal of connective tissue connecting the texts. Two of the authors of these texts reside at the same institution and probably within the same unit or department, yet also exhibit very different empirical, theoretical and methodological approaches to the topic of “games.” Of course this isn’t particularly unique. This same thing could be said of when I walk down the hall of my own department. Yet, concomitantly, that is precisely what I think animates my review of these texts and many working in and around Game Studies would likely agree that often times even within our own institutions that the gulf between any given game scholar and another can feel cavernous. The domain of research in Game Studies encapsulates such a wide variety of empirical, theoretical and methodological approaches that it can often prove difficult from scholars that ostensibly work within the same field to find common ground.

We are all Fools on our journeys through this world. It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this game with you. Fellowship of Fools (FoF) is a game about relationships. Making friends takes time, communication and honesty. For many, making friends and forging new connections can be difficult or even feel impossible. FoF is a game that gives you an opportunity to get to know people through conversation, vulnerability and finding common ground. It is also a game about saying, yes, no and maybe.

This game is intended to help guide you through developing a friendship with someone new, or deepening an existing relationship. With prompts for situations to role play together, you must choose what are the best topics to explore in that given situation. Some things may be too personal to ask too early in getting to know someone, or not appropriate for the situation at hand. Together we will navigate these possibilities and share feedback on how we choose to play and respond. The more you play the more experience you build at conversing and building friendships. The more you play with the same players, the deeper your relationships become.

You can read more about the game at FellowshipOfFoolsGame.com and read a bit more about the development process here.

Abstract: Avatars are built upon and play within black boxes—various technologies and tools used to create videogames and digital worlds. In particular, game engines (the software systems upon which games are developed) and platforms (compu- tational frameworks) have significant design impacts on the games that they are used to create. Exploring the entanglement of designer, engine, and computational platform is a useful framework for thinking about design and the broader social/ cultural implications of games and avatars.

Abstract: The last decade has brought seismic shifts in the videogame industry, perhaps so dramatic that even a notion of a singular “game industry” could be called into question. Some would cite the ubiquity of “free” tools for game production, such at Unity, the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) and numerous other tools as the single largest change. Others might point to the rise of “indy” or independently produced games as well as “art” and “personal” games. More might note the rapid uptake of digital distribution platforms as fundamentally destabilizing retail game sales. Yet, it is the shifting economics of the game industry that pose the greatest destabilizing force. This shifting field of economics challenges all aspects of the game industry. Companies simply no longer know how to reliably make money The flow of capital in the production of games has largely been a closed book. In 2008, for example, 90% of revenue generated for games was produced by the physical sale of games for console videogame systems (O’Donnell, 2014a, p. 184). Yet, since that time the game industry’s underlying economic system has split at the seams. From the rise of $0.99 games, free games supported by advertising revenue, “freemium,” or free-to-play games that offer in-game-purchases to crowdsourcing platforms like Kickstarter, the importance of capital has emerged as the single largest shifting aspect of the game industry. In this chapter, I examine a variety of games attempting to find their niche in this new space as well as the broader implications for the “AAA” or Triple-A / “Big” game industry. Convincing players to actually spend money on games where so many are “free” has proven to be one of the most difficult aspects of modern game design and development. In many respects, this seismic shift in the game industry serves to illuminate the critical role that capital has always had for games and play. This shift simply offers a new opportunity to see these systems laid bare for all to see .

Along with Samuel Gerald Collins, Matthew Durington, Paolo Favero, Krista Harper, and Ali Kenner we recently published an essay titled, “Ethnographic Apps/Apps as Ethnography,” in Anthropology Now. You can find the article online here.

Today, people nearly everywhere are ex-periencing multiple events through the medium of mobile apps: Social networking platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook and In-stagram, are now accessed through smart-phones by most users; popular service apps like Yelp are used for finding restaurants and services; geolocation apps for way finding, such as Google Maps, plot drives, commutes by public transportation and even walks around the block; and there are tons of per- sonal health and Fitness trackers that count everything from steps to calorie intake. For anthropologists, mobile apps provide the op-portunity for an enhanced methodological approach that provides new possibilities to engage with the people they study, heighten their reflexive capacities and link to new forms of data. While many approach these possibilities with trepidation, our collective sentiment is that these new forms of commu-nication provide more promise than pitfalls for anthropology.
