]]>Greater Wellington Regional Council transport committee chairperson Thomas Nash said a Scania K series bus had been driven from Auckland on Monday. It would be used to help the council understand what changes might be needed to introduce bendy buses on the Number 2 bus route, from Karori to Miramar.

The bendy buses are being mooted as a solution to expanding passenger capacity through the Karori Tunnel – which is not tall enough to safely fit double decker buses.
Other options, such as daylighting the tunnel and building a viaduct for Raroa Rd, had been disqualified due to the prohibitive cost.
The Scania K series bus had been driven from Auckland on Monday.

The vehicle, which can seat 67 and has a standing capacity of 47, will follow the route to gauge any obstacles.
About 10,000 people travelled the route each day, Nash said –three million trips over the past year.
Sensors had been attached to the vehicle to see where the bus would track on Wellington’s roads, Nash said.
He estimated about 40 to 50 car parks may be removed along the 2’s route due to the need to extend bus stops to accommodate the extra length of the buses.
“We will be working with Wellington City Council to work out what needs to change – the layout on the road, traffic furniture, or car parks.”
The diesel-powered bendy bus is an Auckland Transport bus used for school runs, Nash said.
The bendy bus has the capacity to fit 114 people inside.

Nash said procuring electric versions would mean a difference in price with modern electric articulated buses costing around $1.4 million to purchase.
The bus has a turning circle of 24 metres, and requires a Class 4 licence to drive – the same as that for the double decker buses.
Advantages included faster loading of passengers and improved mobility access, but they took up more space at bus stops.
The trial is designed to help Metlink understand the possible constraints through the narrow streets of Wellington’s hillside suburbs.
It will also allow Metlink officers to check the accuracy of the expected path of the bus against the actual path on the route.
The trial will be run late in the evenings to avoid disrupting timetabled services and traffic flow. Passengers will not be able to board the bus.
A possible purchase decision will be made in mid-2024, if route infrastructure is in place for the buses from 2026.

An electric bus designed and built in Dairy Flat took its first passengers on a ride in Rotorua on October 10, following its official launch by Transport Minister Michael Wood. In the next few weeks, it will be driven on local school routes.
Developed and manufactured by Zemtec (Zero Emission Technologies), the E-City bus is hailed as an exciting development for sustainable transport.
The bus has been a few years in the making – the company formed in early 2019 and Hibiscus Matters first took a look at the partially completed prototype back in 2020.
Zemtec’s parent company, Bayes Coachlines Limited, received $302,000 from the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority’s (EECA) Low Emissions Transport Fund towards the construction and trial of the bus.
Zemtec chief executives John and Richard Bayes drove the bus from Dairy Flat to Rotorua for the launch, and say it performs exceptionally well.
John Bayes says the E-City is the first fully electric bus designed from the ground up and built in NZ.
“Other electric buses built in NZ have used Chinese chassis. However, our bus uses high quality components from around the world, particularly Europe and the United States.”
Most of the frame and exterior were locally made, involving Silverdale companies.
“We’ve been able to take advantage of new technology and make it much lighter and more comfortable, with a flat floor running from the front to the back.”
Other innovations include placing the batteries in the roof, adding solar panels and using cameras and monitors instead of wing mirrors, reducing driver blind spots.
The price of the Zemtec E-City bus is yet to be finalised, but while it will cost more than e-buses imported from China, John Bayes says operating costs will be significantly lower, as it is 30 percent more energy efficient.
“Most electric bus are based on old diesel bus designs which are considerably heavier than the E-City,” he says. “It will carry more passengers at a substantially lighter weight than its competitors, so road user charges, charging costs and driver training costs are lower. It can travel around 300km before it needs recharging.”
He says there is a lot of interest from bus operators in NZ and Australia, and Zemtec can scale up manufacturing quickly, if required. Meanwhile work has started on the second bus and projects after that include a ‘bendy bus’, then an electric truck.
The E-City will begin trials on school runs around the Coast in the coming weeks and the company is in discussions with Auckland Transport on plans to trial it on commercial routes in Auckland next month.

]]>The Zemtec E-City electric bus can travel about 300km between charges, is said to be 30% more efficient than other e-buses on the NZ market, and was presented at the Bus and Coach Association Conference in Rotorua.
Wood said the innovative new bus “supports Kiwi jobs and Kiwi innovation” and that the move to electric public transport would provide a positive double-whammy of reduced emissions and better air quality.
But the problem will be finding drivers, with Wood admitting he’d call the shortage “a crisis”.

The last 3 buses to join the fleet are - Numbers 125, 126 and 127

BUSINESS MILESTONE: Bayes Coachlines in Dairy Flat celebrated 30 years in business by taking their staff and partners to Paihia for the weekend.
One of Rodney’s largest local employers Bayes Coachlines celebrated 30 years in business last weekend.
While most companies are tightening their belts to save money, Dairy Flat-based Bayes Coachlines took their 57 employees and their partners to the Bay of Islands for the weekend to celebrate.
One of their oldest employees, Ray Fowler, 75, of Red Beach, says he started working for Bayes nearly two years ago after he retired from 61 years of full time work.
He says he’s never worked for a company that treats its staff so well.
General manager Richard Bayes says the company was formed in September 1979 when his parents Dave and Joan Bayes were operating a limeworks and truck company.
A local bus company just down the road called Roberts Transport were keen for them to buy their company and in September the sale went through.
"That was on the Saturday and we started the four school runs on the Monday morning, the start of the then term three," says Richard.
There was a quick scramble to get licences for the drivers, with help from local police, and by Monday they were driving.
The company has grown, and now has 46 buses and coaches, and brothers Richard and John have taken over the running of the business.
Their daily school runs service most of the local schools including Orewa College, Orewa Primary, Orewa North, Whangaparaoa and Wentworth Colleges, Stella Maris, Kingsway School and Gulf Harbour School.
They also service schools on the North Shore including Kristin, Northcross Intermediate, Rosmini, Carmel and Long Bay Colleges.
They do school charters for most of these schools and trips for elderly groups, travel clubs, local churches, sports clubs and teams.
Richard says their staff are like family and they felt it was important to celebrate the milestone with them.
"We felt that it was very important to have them with us. Without our staff we wouldn’t be here, and celebrating the fact that they are a fantastic group of people."
He says many of the staff have been with the company for more than 10 to 15 years, and a few for more than 20.
"The business has been built and developed on family values and standards of quality, reliability and integrity. We value our staff and are keen to keep building the relationships we have with them and to strengthen the family culture within the business."
"A weekend away as a big group is always fun and from the comments we have had back they all really enjoyed it."
]]>Orewa College students from Army Bay and Manly have a new articulated bus.
Their driver, Andi Jackson, has been selected to trial Bayes Coachline's 100th bus. A driver with more than 25 years experience, 17 of them with Bayes Coachlines, Andi has been doing the Army Bay run for about 14 years.
Andi is also a volunteer firefighter and often drives the Manly fire engine, so is no stranger to large vehicles.
"I have a good bunch of students. They will be thrilled with their new bus," Andi says.
The new bus, number 100, has a low floor with a wheelchair ramp. Like other modern buses it features the ability to lower itself for easier access, but it can also raise itself higher to negotiate low and tricky road surfaces.
It is equipped with air-conditioning, closed circuit surveillance TV and a public address system.
The dashboard has a multi-function LCD display that can show various aspects of the onboard systems at any given time.
This technology can also be used to monitor the vehicle systems back at the depot.
At 19 metres, it matches the length of the longest bus in New Zealand, also operated by Bayes Coachlines, but this is New Zealand’s first four-axle bus. It can seat 70 passengers, which can be increased to 74 with minor modifications.
