While the officers who worked with Flahive have since retired, they made sure that his legacy would continue to be honored for years to come. The parked police car is an annual way for the department to recognize the day.

“We knew at some point there wouldn’t be anybody here that had worked with him and we wanted to make sure (the memory) stayed alive,” Lieutenant Ryan Enlow said.

Over the past 30 years, the way the department remembers Officer Flahive has grown. A permanent stone memorial was installed seven or eight years ago at the front of the department’s building.

The memorial helps preserve the memory of his tragic death back in 1994. While several outlets have reported the story differently, Flahive’s death was not immediate; instead, he bled out after being shot in his femoral artery. Paramedics tried to stop the bleeding, but Officer Flahive was later declared dead after being taken from the scene.

Along with the cruiser and the stone memorial, a memorial service is held with an honor guard, officers in their Class-A uniforms and visits from other law enforcement in the state who had worked with Flahive. The service is open to the public, with Officer Flahive’s relatives often visiting.

“These memorials make you reflect and remind you to not take life for granted,” Student Resource Officer Deputy Zach Martinie said. “Personally, when I’m at these services, I feel very grateful to be here — grateful to be alive, grateful to be able to have this job, grateful to have a family.”

“I am a big dog guy,” said Wiebenga. “I thought about doing a donation drive for the shelter my class volunteered at. I did some research online and saw some Operation Santa Paws around the country. So I thought let’s do Operation Santa Paws, since people are in the spirit of giving this time of year.”

Additionally, Wiebenga believes that pets play a pivotal role in human life.

“Pets, whether it’s a cat, dog, fish, you name it, give unconditional love,”said Wiebenga. “In the sense of it doesn’t matter the day, the week, the time, you know your dogs or your pets will be there. Whether it’s a time of joy, a time of sadness, or whatever it is. But pets also teach us unconditional love.”

For those looking to donate, the donation table is located outside of room 3113. The process is simple and Wiebenga is happy to help curious donors.

“People can donate any time between now and the first of the year” said Wiebenga

Upon entering Taco Jalisco, you’re greeted by a vibrant atmosphere that sets the perfect backdrop for a meal. The colorful decor, adorned with traditional Mexican artwork, creates a warm and inviting space that feels both lively and comfortable. The friendly staff are always ready to welcome you with a smile, and I appreciate how quickly they take your order and serve the food.

On my latest visit, I decided to indulge in the enchiladas verdes, a dish I’ve come to love. The presentation was appealing, with the enchiladas generously smothered in a fresh, zesty green tomatillo sauce that had just the right amount of spice. Each bite was bursting with flavor, and the tender filling was perfectly seasoned, making it a delightful experience. The accompanying rice and beans were cooked to perfection, providing a satisfying and well-rounded meal.

Taco Jalisco has an extensive menu with a wide variety of food and beverages. They carry Coca-Cola products and have everything you could want including tacos, fajitas, burritos, and dessert.

One of the aspects I truly appreciate about Taco Jalisco is its commitment to quality and consistency. Every time I visit, I can expect the same high standards of food and service, which keeps me coming back for more. Whether you’re a fan of spicy dishes or prefer milder options, there’s something on the menu for everyone.

Overall, Taco Jalisco is more than just a restaurant; it’s a place where you can savor the rich traditions of Mexican cuisine. If you find yourself looking for an affordable, delicious meal, I highly recommend stopping by Taco Jalisco. You won’t be disappointed!

When going to the restaurant, I first noticed that parking was severely limited. The parking lot’s capacity cannot accommodate the number of customers showing up at the bar, especially during rush hour. It may take a while to find a place to park, but even when you do, it may be a bit of a walk to the door.  

The wait for seating was fast, it took us no longer than 10 minutes to get through a line of almost 20 people. Staff immediately took drink orders and within five minutes all the drinks at the table were delivered. The drinks offered are an expansive variety of Pepsi products, coffees and over 70 choices of alcoholic drinks.

The atmosphere in the bar is very high energy. The volume may be an issue for some customers as the entire bar is one large room with few walls to stop noise. The noise mainly comes from conversation and the highway.

The two halves of the restaurant have very different decor. Those on the porch will have their eyes drawn to the view of cars racing past on the highway while the heaters hanging off of the roof overhead buzz. On the inside of the restaurant the feeling is very different, most eyes are on the massive TV playing the biggest sports while others may be examining the hanging lights or the cabinet filled with various hot sauces.

A vast array of items are offered on the menu. Appetizers include Wisconsin cheese curds, pretzel bites and quesadillas. Choices for main courses include multiple choices of burgers, chili dogs and a section of entrees is offered that includes mac and cheese, chicken fingers and sticky ribs. Although the desserts look scrumptious, they are few and lack description in the menu.

For a meal, I ordered a barbecue burger with a side of chips which was an inexpensive $10.80 post-tax. The food took a minute to come out, but when it arrived it did not disappoint. The rather small barbecue burger had lightly toasted buns, a scrumptious Carolina barbecue sauce, bacon bits and a well-done patty. The chips had a great crunch but lacked taste.

Overall, the bill was an extraordinarily inexpensive $30 for two people. The restaurant takes cash, card and phone payments. Thanks to the QR code on the bill, payment takes less than three taps on your phone, making in and out trips drastically easier.

The only major downside to the restaurant is excessive noise levels. However, if you can tolerate the volume, I would highly recommend stopping for a quick meal. It’s a great, inexpensive way to grab enjoyable food while on a time limit.

The presentation “Digital Detox” addressed the rising concern surrounding the impact of excessive cell phone use on students and covered strategies for digital well-being. Instead of saying no to phones, students are encouraged to find something to say yes to instead.

“I don’t want you guys to get rid of the screens,” said Kenny Spear, Founder of Positive You. “I just want us to get rid of the toxic part of the screens.”

The assembly encouraged focusing on innate talents and interests as an alternative to screen time. Spear encouraged the students to identify and develop their superpowers — the unique skills they have — in nine different categories: athletics, music, art, people, word, numbers, life, self and nature.

“So there’s nine superpowers but you guys might only have three, might have eight,” Spear said. “Everybody has a different profile and it catches them a little bit differently.”

Assistant Principal Brad Cusumano connected with Positive You about four months ago. Cusumano had previously worked with Spears at De La Salle Collegiate High School in Warren Michigan. Spears was working on drug prevention programs while Cusumano was teaching. As time went on, he shifted focus towards emotional learning, which interested Cusumano when the two reconnected.

Positive You is also looking to be more prevalent in the district. With the school directly partnering with them, it is expected that they will lead the academy curriculum. While no plan has been finalized, there has been talk of videos, journals, workbooks and other online content.

“We’re looking to bring Positive You in for some emotional intelligence learning, just to make things more applicable and relevant on daily issues that we all are dealing with in our lives,” Cusumano said.

The Positive You curriculum aims to replace the school’s approach to emotional learning. Unlike current strategies, which focus on a wide range of topics without immediate connection to the student, Positive You brings a more personal touch.

“What’s going to separate this is a lot of things,” Cusumano said. ”You’re going to see the person who’s going to be talking about this emotional intelligence stuff and it’s going to come from somebody who is experienced and knowledgeable in the topic versus just pushing a lesson.”

For Cusumano, this personal touch is what sets Positive You apart from the programs in recent years. Focusing on each student’s personal strengths and interests to develop emotional skills with content from an experienced source is a significantly more effective way of connecting with students.

“I’m not here to tell you to say no to technology,” Spears said. “I’m here to give you something better to say yes to.”

“I think I am ready to perform as well as the whole cast,” said Senior Evangeline Henderson. “We have been working hard since the beginning of the school year and are putting everything we have towards our performances.”

Those who will attend the performances should expect to see the culmination of a product the cast has loads of passion for. Everything will be left out on stage.

“This musical has a range of elements. Being funny, heartwarming. Not to mention great songs throughout the whole show,”said Henderson. “The audience can expect to have a great time.” 

How long have you been swimming? 

I have been swimming since fourth grade. I did both years of middle school swim and all four years of high school swim. 

What events do you swim? 

I swim the 500 free and the 200 free most often.

Favorite memory from swim? 

I’d say getting to be an alternate for the State swim team last year. It was a lot of fun to cheer on my teammates. I am also an alternate this year; the state meet is this Friday and Saturday. 

Who or what motivates you? 

I’m just trying to be the best teammate that I can be. I enjoy the sport and the girls I swim with and I want to be the best cheerleader I can be for them. 

Proudest achievements? 

At the end of every season, it’s nice to look back on all the work I’ve put in. 

Favorite event to watch? 

I love watching relays, they are just really exciting. 

One piece of advice for freshmen? 

It’s a lot of work and a long season, but if you give it your all and make the most of it, it’s so much fun.

The album starts out fast, but loses steam over time. The first two tracks, “St. Chroma” and “Rah Tah Tah” serve as a potent one-two punch of eeriness and oddity that seemingly was only the start of more to come just like it. However, the album starts to become slightly disappointing at the arrival of the third track “Darling, I.”

 While “Darling, I” is satisfactory, it breaks away from the dark and eerie journey many listeners expect. By no means is it and the following track “Hey Jane” bad songs, but don’t reach for the same feeling of unearthlyness established by the first three tracks. While “I Killed You” briefly offers a glimmer of hope that the album will ultimately take that turn down the dark path, the rest of the album ultimately doesn’t follow through.

By the back half of the Chromakopia, it has transitioned into any other Tyler, the Creator album. There’s nothing in tracks such as “Sticky” and “Balloon” that you cannot find in his past works. Though Chromakopia is worth it as a listen, don’t expect to be wowed by an evolved sound. What should be expected instead is standard Tyler, the Creator flare with some hints of evolution tucked away in the tracks.

Set in a darker, more dangerous Gotham on the Fourth of July, Arkham Shadow uses a virtual reality platform to create a uniquely personal experience. Unlike its predecessors, players don’t see Batman directly but only his shadow as he moves through the world, as the title references. Gotham’s open-world design feels more alive than ever, with a dynamic day-night cycle, shifting weather, and environmental details to fully immerse players. The narrow alleyways, looming towers, and hidden secrets make exploration rewarding and give the game a cinematic feel.

The gameplay of Arkham Shadow builds on the beloved Arkham formula while introducing several new mechanics that make it feel fresh. Batman’s combat moves have evolved, with new gadgets like the “Shadow Cloak,” which allows him to become invisible for short periods, and “Pulse Vision,” helping him locate enemies and clues. These additions enhance both stealth and combat, allowing players to vary their strategies when facing Gotham’s various threats.

Another standout feature is the VR integration. Players can switch between first and third-person perspectives, which creates a unique playstyle and brings an intense level of immersion to high-stakes situations. Navigating Gotham’s rooftops and alleyways from these perspectives adds a level of engagement not seen in previous Arkham games. Performance-wise, Arkham Shadow delivers smooth frame rates and minimal loading times, creating an uninterrupted experience.

Side missions complement the main storyline without overshadowing it. Players can undertake rescue missions, Riddler puzzles and intel-gathering tasks that reveal more about Gotham’s underworld and add to the game’s narrative. Classic villains return with updated visuals and new abilities, giving players the chance to face off with characters like Two-Face, Harley Quinn, and a revamped Scarecrow.

Arkham Shadow introduces a more complex Batman, with a storyline that explores his early moral struggles. Throughout the game, Batman grapples with his role in Gotham’s crime spiral and his choices have a critical impact on the city’s future. The VR elements intensify this sense of personal responsibility, especially in scenes where players must make difficult choices. The voice acting deserves special mention, bringing emotional depth to Batman and the villains, each with their own motives and fears.

In particular, the game’s main antagonist, the Rat King, is a fresh addition who brings a psychological element to the game. The Rat King manipulates Gotham’s underground, creating a tension that underscores every mission, and his chilling interactions with Batman force players to confront the cost of their vigilante actions.

While Batman: Arkham Shadow introduces exciting new gameplay elements and a rich storyline, it does come with a few potential drawbacks. The VR integration, while immersive, might not be for everyone; some players may find the experience disorienting or too dependent on VR hardware, limiting accessibility. Additionally, the side missions, though initially engaging, can feel repetitive over time, which could detract from the otherwise compelling narrative. Gotham’s dark, moody visuals also contribute to the intense atmosphere but may cause eye strain during extended gameplay sessions due to the heavy focus on low lighting and shadowy scenes. Despite these minor setbacks, Arkham Shadow still offers a captivating experience for those willing to embrace its unique approach to Gotham’s underworld.

All in all, Batman: Arkham Shadow is a shadowy triumph, balancing intense action with a deeply compelling story that stays faithful to Batman’s legacy. The VR integration and new mechanics provide a refreshing experience, making it a must-play for Gotham and Arkham series fans alike. For those ready to dive into the darker corners of Gotham, Arkham Shadow delivers hours of thrilling gameplay and storytelling.

“We’ve been working on this since May. That’s when we decide what the theme is going to be,” said Meyers.

This year, the theme was fairy tales. The performing arts center was decorated accordingly with enchanting trees, half of it was split between the green and black of witchcraft and the pink and white of princesses. 

The decor in the performing arts center was not the only major part of this show, the amount of technical work put in is what made the show as magical as the fairytales it was depicting.

“With the amount of technical work we’re putting in it’s become more of a stage play.” said Meyers.”Between the movies playing on the screen in the background, the scenes with the monkeys and the confetti cannons at the end it’s really a lot.”

The performed songs have been in the works since the beginning of the school year. Some of the songs performed were well-known numbers from Wicked, Enchanted, Cinderella, Narnia as well as other fairy tale-themed music.

The work put in has been well worth it for an excellent show, though. The performance was so good it chilled the audience right down to the bone.

“It’s a lot of pieces to make come together.”  Said Meyers. “Our students really dig in though.”
